HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Saturday 1991 - Mother seemed sleepy today.  Jean and I rode bikes out to Careytown and back.  Bob and Carl's with coupon has 1 gallon of milk for 99¢.  Painting up truck at Wells.

Monday 1992 - [Lexington KY] MV was to be at the hospital – Central Baptist at 5:00, "C" scheduled at 7:30, but delayed until 8:00 because of an emergency.  Baby [Ginny] born at 8:28.  Don was with her and we talked with MV around 11:00, she is in room 216, seemingly no restrictions on visitors.  A big baby at 10lbs 2oz, 21½" long, light hair.  Had supper at Applebee's, the steamed vegetables was a huge serving.

Tuesday 1993 - [Rolla to Branson MO.  From Itinerary:  Breakfast at Shoney's, arrive in Branson at 3:30, staying a the Eagles Inn.  Dinner at Contrary Mary's.  Wayne Newton at 8PM.]

Wednesday 1994 - [Grand Junction to Denver Colorado with Aunt Mary] Jean and I went for a swim in the big city pool, they have a jacuzzi chair that you put in 25¢ for 5 minutes.  Lunch in Vail, what a huge parking garage.  No cars on the business street but a free bus.  Had lunch at Blu's at 193 E. Gore Creek Dr.  Nice library.  Back to Denver where we stayed at the Hilton Hotel in Englewood area.

Saturday 1996 - [Covington KY to home] Had breakfast in the room, then a swim.  Got to the zoo about 10:45, parking $4.50 realized later we could have parked in the zoo grounds, rather than in the lot across the street.  Regular admission is $8.  Met John, Julie and Kate there, they, like the Crowsons had brought a wagon.  They [wagons] came in handy with the girls and hauling the big ice box to the picnic grounds for a picnic.  At 2pm they had a show – Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop.  This is Ginny's 4th birthday, she liked the little monkeys who were wearing diapers.  We left around 4 and had supper at Wendy's near Mariemont.  Can't recall when I saw so many young children with wagons, etc. and such a HOT day.

Sunday 1997 - [Somerset KY to home with Roberta, Sid, John, Julie, Kate, Serena] Had breakfast at the Crowsons, then to Church.  The Crowsons had the altar flowers for Ginny and GHU, 100 years apart.  We left there after lunch at Lee's Ford with a stop at U. of Cincinnati at UDF.  The youth had the program on their mission trip to Chicago.  Roberta gave me the brown vest with lots of pockets, also the shorts with a zipper pocket.

Ginny's birth eve

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Wednesday 1989 - [Wendy visiting] Trimmed shrubbery in front of Wells break area.  Picked last of peas.  More black raspberries than red.

Thursday 1990 - Had supper at Burger Chef [from Burger Chef locations:  860 Rombach Avenue This location became a Hardee's which eventually closed. Donato's Pizza used the building from sometime in the 1990's until the summer of 2006. The building will be razed to construct a new building housing Donato's Pizza and several other shops.]  $6.83 for the 2 of us.  Then yogurt at Pick'n Save at $1.99/lb.  Also bananas at 18¢/lb.  Square dancing.

Friday 1991 - Went to Hillsboro at lunch time.  Mother seemed real well.  Tony McIntosh has been putting new metal over warehouse windows on Main Street, $12/hour.  Put some dirt – got a load – on the rough places across the street.  Oh the poison ivy, especially on one tree.

Sunday 1992 - [to Lexington KY in anticipation of Ginny's birth] Left home at 9am for Newtonsville, where Jim Wise, our former pastor, now is.  Their service was at Stone Lick State Park, about 100 there and a # of young people.  We met the Goodings at 1:00 at Mike Fink's, very inexpensive at noon, $10 for the 2 of us.  Interesting house and park along the KY part.  Had reservations at the Greenleaf Motel, $36 hospital rate.  Crowsons came by around 9:30 pm.  Hotel was built about 40 years ago out in the country as was a Howard Johnson's with the unique entrance.

Monday 1993 - [NV to Rolla MO]  We leave at 7AM with the New Vienna Senior Citizens for Branson, MO.  $549 for the week, Monday through Saturday. [From Itinerary:  Stop to visit Fantastic Caverns in Springfield MO then to Best Western Coachlight in Rolla.  Dinner at Sirloin Stockade, adjacent to hotel.]

Tuesday 1994 - [Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction Colorado with Aunt Mary] Had expected to visit Fran Brown near Meeker but her answering unit said "she had been called away."  Drove to Grand Junction and visited the Dinosaur Valley Museum.  Ate at a sorry place just across the street.  Visited the Colorado National Monument.

Wednesday 1995 - [NYC to home] We were the only ones on the plane from Washington DC to Columbus. (19 passengers)  Parking $4 in Red Lot, $6 in Blue Lot.

Friday 1996 - [to Covington KY] MV had made reservations for us at Riverview Quality Inn right off I-75 in Covington, had room 525, $70+ and they had 524.  Nice pool with retractable top (partial).  For supper we went to Don Pablo's right on the river, just east of I-471.  Oh what a crowd and the noise but great view.

Saturday 1997 - [Somerset KY with Roberta, Sid, John, Julie, Kate, Serena] Big breakfast at Crowsons.  Had lunch at Wendy's.  In PM went to Burnside Marina, it was hot.  MV had tables for about 25 people for buffet supper,  It rained about ½ way there.  Talked with a couple, he's a retired pharmacist.

Monday 1999 - [Columbia to Independence to Kansas City MO, with Serena] After the breakfast at the hotel we drove by Aunt Luna's old house at 408 Price Ave. [can't find this street on Google Maps, so name may have been changed], near College Ave.  and out to Boman [? can't find that street either] to see where the Sankers live.  [HH adds in 2011 that the Mitchells (Aunt Luna's family, she was Gladys Hiestand Uible's sister) moved to Columbia from Mound City so the children could go to college there.  They lived in a BIG frame house.]  Got to the Truman Museum (after driving through very hard rain) about 11am, the usual oval office, etc. etc.  Harry T. had a hard and not too successful life until he got into politics, thanks to Pendergast.  [Tom Pendergast was a Kansas City political boss.]  Bess's Mother was anti-Harry.  Copies of many letters that they [he and Bess] exchanged, including his proposal of marriage.  We ate at nearby Harry T's Restaurant.  Went back to the museum after lunch, an older lady in her 80s was the guide.  She did a great job.  On to this hotel [this entry written on stationary from The Raphael Kansas City: Kansas City's elegant "little" hotel] where we had reservations, $139, Suite 105.  Very nice.  Ritz is across the street.  They gave us coupon for  25% off in the dining room.  Walked along the river to go to Jules (and found out they had gone out of business) [closed April 1999] so went back [to hotel] and had dinner.   I had K.C. steak, $22 with salad, potatoes, and asparagus.  Very nice.  We walked back to Barnes and Noble and looked around.  The hotel left us chocolate cookies on the bed.

Michigan Library Postcards

Library postcards again are clamoring to be shared.  Here are some from Michigan, one of which I visited many times between 1967-1973 and which was sent to me in 1968.  Here's an interesting website I found while doing research for these cards:  Carnegie Library Buildings - Waymarking

Adrian Michigan Carnegie Library postcard c1910
mailed January 15, 1915 to Mrs. P.H. Smith, Vicksburg, Michigan
Dear Cousin,
I expect you are quite busy with your school work.  I am taking music lessons in Adrian and it keeps me busy.  Vilante goes to school too I expect.  Love to all.  Luna

Adrian was quite proud of their library for which they received a Carnegie grant of $27,500.  The library opened in 1909 and served as the library until 1978 when the City remodeled a J.C.Penney store to serve as a new library.  The Carnegie building is now the Lenawee Historical Society Museum and part of Adrian's Historic District.  A slide show about the former library can be seen here.  The building is a combination of Mission Revival Style and Richardson Romanesque architecture.

Detroit Carnegie Library postcard c1930 unmailed
Detroit received $750,000 in Carnegie funds for a central library in 1901 although it did not open until 1921.  Wings were added and opened in 1963.  This building still stands as a public library and contains administrative offices for the library system.
Kalamazoo MI Library postcard c1965
sent to Catherine March 24, 1968
[mailed March 24, 1968]
Greetings from K.  The weather here on this fair arcadian hill has been miserable - (I guess it has been bad everywhere.)  Working for Maintenance has been just what I thought it would be - you sit around talking for half the time and the other half you goof off.  Well enjoy your vacation.  --Dave [Stone]

Dave, from Portland Oregon, was spending our freshman spring break working for the college maintenance department.  As you can read, he had a good sense of humor.  I have no idea what happened to him after college.

A history of the Kalamazoo library system can be found here, but to summarize the city built a Romanesque structure in 1893 with a $50,000 donation from a benefactor which served as a library until 1959 when the library opened in the less imposing building shown on the card above.
Ludington MI Carnegie Library postcard c1910
mailed Aug. 20, 1934 to Miss Mary Patterson
[mailed August 20, 1934]
Dear Mary, I'm visiting Ruth for a week or so.  It's very chilly up here, but delightful.  Thank you for your letter.  I will answer as soon as I can.  Don't work too hard and good luck at the fair.  Love, Estelle

Ludington, which received a Carnegie grant of $15,000, is about 100 miles north of Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan.  Located on US-10 and US-31, Ludington is the county seat of Mason County and had a population in 2000 of 8,357.  This building, of square colonial architecture combined with Romanesque arched windows and doors, opened c1906.  In the 1970's Ludington spent $300,000 on an addition to the library.

Hortons 50th Wedding Anniversary

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [HH to Elderhostel in Athens OH, Jean & Wendy to Elderhostel in Townsend TN]

Wednesday 1990 - [Dayton to home] Got to the Knights Inn in Vandalia [Dayton airport] early early in the AM, the van that met us said "Thrifty Car Rental,"  finally got together.  Bob Walker came at 10:30 for us, had lunch at Wendy's.  Garden salad 99¢.

Saturday 1992 - Cleared along Rt. 73 at Wells, especially in front of the block building – 8 wheelbarrow loads, also the intersection.  The Hortons open house [for their 50th Anniversary] was from 2-4.  Walter Nichols* music group played.  They had a lot of pictures on the walls, even Mother and Dad's portraits.  Mother was in rare shape and did great.  Gary Cooper took lots of pictures.  Don Williams was there with a video camera.  Took GHU back to Hillsboro at 5:30, then the supper was at 6.  Angela had rented plates, etc.  Ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad, cake and ice cream.  About 36 at dinner.  Broke up about 8PM and they all came to our house.  Carol and John Mueler are both deaf, but carry on a great conversations.  Their daughter is at O.U. in chemistry.  David and Cindy Uible had a 420 Mercedes.  He sells computers to Swiss banks.  Cindy hit it off with Joe and she bought $700+ of paintings.  It was midnight when we got to bed.  [This reminds those of us old enough to remember of Grandma & Granddad's 50th Anniversary in 1962 when John wanted to keep the door "open" for the open house.  The HH family left a few days later for a five-week trip west.]

*HH adds in 2010: On the Hortons do recall Wil Horton and how he was so much of a pain to Walter Nichols (he was MUH' age and they grew up together in Westboro and he later became Supt of Co. Schools) in his playing the instrument.

Sunday 1993 - Father's Day at Sunday School, got a pair of white socks for having the largest size shoe - 13.  Jean hit a home run on the solitaire computer game.  Bill and Mary were here for lunch.  Bill loves the ham loaf.

Tuesday 1995 - [Elderhostel Marine Expeditions program through 6/27]

Thursday 1996 - [Elderhostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Friday 1997 - Larry Lyons (89) passed away.  Started his law practice in 1934.  Big (?) news about the tobacco settlement.

Sunday 1999 - We had invited Bob and Mary Flick to church.  They live at 22 Rice Dr and have been in town about 5 years.  Jean had Ezekiel 3 for SS lesson.  We got back to SS just as they were handing out cookies to the fathers.  Mrs. Flick is quite a talker.  Met John, Julie and Kate at City Park in Chillicothe, nice spot.  Kate does a great job of bike riding without training wheels.  Got gas in Greenfield for 95.9¢.

Honeymoon card #2 - Rolling Chairs on the Boardwalk

The WPA book on New Jersey, published in 1939, says that Atlantic City is a "super-resort" crowded with "honeymooners, teachers, elderly retired couples, vacationing white collar workers, ministers, businessmen and their families."
Rolling Chairs on the Boardwalk.  Atlantic City, NJ postcard c1910
Atlantic City Boardwalk postcard sent June 17, 1912 by Gladys Hiestand Uible while on her honeymoon, to her father Mr. Ira F. Hiestand.

Mon. afternoon [June 17, 1912]
We have had an ideal day today in Atlantic City.  We are enjoying our visit at the beach very much.  We spent this morning sitting along the beach on the sand and watching the waves come and go.  People hire these chairs for 50¢ an hour so they don't have to walk.  --G.H.U.

Would you guess that CJ and GHU did not hire a chair, and saved their money for more oyster stew instead?

Sunday 1996 - [ElderHostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Monday 1997 - [Newark to home] Left Newark about 8:30, walked around Dawes Arboretum, nice sun dial where you stand on different squares for each month to find the time.  Came down through Somerset [OH], then had lunch at Shaw's in Lancaster, Mobil Tour 3 stars, which seemed overrated.  Then to Chillicothe for Finch title work, then up Rt. 35 – they are working on last stretch of 4-lane between there and WCH.  The Ashcrafts 40th anniversary is coming up and the children are getting them 2 bikes.

Tuesday 1998 - Bob Terrell's dog case in Wilmington, pre-trial but wound it up.  UMW meting at Kilpatrick's, she had clipping that house was built in 1918.  Esther Salisbury gave us cherries.

Wednesday 1999 - When the Morgans called on their regular Wed. AM call, Gerry told us he was going to "retire" from Best West and do things around the house.  Think he had been there 9 years.  Went to Mt. Olive church for their annual church dinner.  We were there at 5:30 and that was the height of the crowd.  Walked around the cemetery, noticed that Lettie Kibler was buried in 1973.

Honeymoon card #1 - Oyster stew

Gladys and CJ were married on Monday, June 10, 1912 and arrived in Atlantic City on Friday afternoon.  We can assume they took the train from Hillsboro (or Westboro) to Washington D.C. where they had time to buy this postcard before changing trains for Atlantic City.  No mention of any sightseeing in D.C. but depending on when they left Ohio, they might have had a day or two there.

There is currently no Tracy Hotel listed in Atlantic City although there is a "Divine Tracy Hotel" listed in Philadelphia.

Friday 1991 - Old building in Wilmington all torn down for the site of the new city building.

Tuesday 1994 - After a stop in Wilmington we had lunch at Chester Road House, most specials were $8.95.  Then to Dr. Hoffman office for a hearing test, we both have some hearing loss but not serious.  Had some certification today at Montgomery Library.  So we went to a nearby library.  Met the Sankers at the Echo Restaurant in Hyde Park.  Entrees $5.95.  Made a brief stop at the new Joseph Beth Bookstore, has been open 6 months.  Bought Colorado book.

Summer 1936-37 Anderson's Restaurant, Clarksburg WV

Taking the non-freeway route would have been the only option available in 1936-37 to travel from New Cumberland south to the Jackson's Mill camp.  According to Google Maps, traveling south through Wheeling and then on to Clarksburg would take 3 hours and 16 minutes today to drive the 126 miles.  Then another 20 miles on US-19 to reach Jackson's Mill after lunch at West Virginia's largest restaurant, Anderson's.

Jane & Rowena Herron drove the girls down and Rev. McDevitt the boys.

There is currently no restaurant in Clarksburg named Anderson's.

Mission Camp, Bethany WV c1938

Speculative history leads me to believe that Jean went to Bethany WV for a summer mission camp after the two years at Jackson's Mill in Weston WV.  Bethany is much closer to New Cumberland, being about 30 miles south via WV-2 and WV-67 and now that Jean is in high school the time on a college campus may have helped her narrow her college choices.  Since we have the option of looking into her future we know she chose to go to college in Morgantown at WVU.

Dear Rev. McDevitt*,
Jane and I are having a very good time but we do miss you this year.  Rev. Inglis is here and he's a scream.  Will see you Sunday we hope.  –Jean

*Note: Mom told me it was spelled McDevitt, but pronounced McDivitt.  I am unable to confirm this.

Summer 1936 - Upshur Cottage at Jackson's Mill, Weston WV

Mission Camp continues in 1936 and Jean found time to send another postcard home.  The summer of 1936 was also the time the Summer Olympics were held in Berlin Germany and generated quite a bit of debate.  It was also the middle of the Great Depression and one of the most severe heat waves in modern times hit North America with temperatures of 110 throughout the country.

Upshur Cottage, dedicated in 1923 at Jackson's Mill was constructed of stone with the idea that "it would be as solid as the 4-H ideals themselves."  The interior is divided into dormitory rooms.
