1971 Cris's Letter -Sep.19

SEPTEMBER 19th [1971]

Dear Uible Family & Grandma,

Here I am in GA. TECH, awaiting tomorrows opening of classes.  To say the least I don't know what to expect, except plenty of studying and sore excruciating headaches.  HA!  Actually, I'm real optimistic and anxious to be initiated as a full fledged RAMBLIN RECH from GA. TECH!

This week has been devoted solely to getting settled and oriented on campus.  My dorm room worked our real well even though I was placed at the last minute in worst of the freshman dorms.  My room is well located, for across the hall is the latrine facilities, to the right of that is a water fountain and a phone, while to the south of my room is a staircase which adds privacy and quietness to the room, not mentioning the fast get away for classes in the morning.  Also my roommate and I are quite compatible, which is very lucky!

My schedule includes more Math, Physics, AFROTC, and a computer course.  You'll be interested to know that I've definitely decided to continue with ROTC.  I hope I'm doing the right thing for this coming Thursday I raise my right hand and enlist for four years of active duty.  However, I hope to devote two of those four years towards a Masters in Industrial Management, so actually I'm serving only two years.  This plan is agreeable with me.  My B.S. plans right now include majoring in Industrial Engineering.  My tentative date for graduation is Winter of 74.  UGH!

Yesterday, I attended my first football game at Tech, and must say it was alot of fun.  At the beginning of the game, before the players went onto the field an old Model A Ford (Ramblin Reck) came on to the field and every one cheered.  See the Ramblin Reck is sort of our heritage at this school.  By the way, we won (a minor point)!

Today, (Sunday) I went to church and met my first "SOUTHERN BELLE".  She just happened to be sitting right by me some how.  Anyway, after the service, being forward like I am (HA!) I asked her to join me for dinner but that got a BIG NO !  However, I got her address and will ask her to this weeks game!  Also after church she asked me if I was a voice major.  I thought that was funny for my roommate calls me, GOLDEN THROAT!  HA!

Speaking of singing I tried out for the male glee club last week.  I hope to join for there is a remote chance the group might tour Russia this summer!  If that falls through for the summer I'm also applying to work this summer in Europe.  This is done through the school's YMCA.

Speaking of travel, Aunt Jean, I think the Folks are planning to visit the African coast for three weeks!  Is the bet still on?  They are planning to take off for three weeks around the 20th of Dec.

J.B. I've also wondered if you would do me a big favor, if you would please!  I wondered if you would mail me my watch COD.  also check and see if I left a pair of two tone shoes at your house.  If so, please mail that also for me COD.  It would be much appreciated!  The shoes are brown.

Grandma, hope you are feeling better now and wish you a fast recovery so you can join us in the Winter.  Take care for I'm thinking of you all always.

Teens present their first recital

Christian Crowson and Sarrah Long have been singing as long s they can remember.  They have sung at school, at literary meets, in talent competitions and in the Pine Forest United Methodist Church youth choir.

Crowson and Long don't sing together, but they will be on the same recital program June 8 – the first recital for both of them.  Students of Dick Burrell, 16-year=old Crowson is a 10th grader at Trinity Christian School.  Long is a 15-year-old home-schooled ninth grader.

Long discovered her soprano voice when she won first place in a sixth-grade talent contest at West Laurens Middle School.  "Then at talent camp in Florida in the sixth grade, I placed in all my categories," she said.

For her, that was a beginning.  More talent contests have brought her modeling and acting agents in Atlanta and New York.  Her goal is an acting career in musical theater.

Crowson said he started singing when he was little.  "People always told me I had a nice voice," he said.  When he was about 13, his mother, Mary Crowson who is choir director at Pine Forest UMC, realized he had something special.

A tenor who also can hit low notes he he competed in the state literary meet while in the eight grade.  This competition generally is reserved for high school students.  Crowson said he plans on a career in music education but has not chosen a college.

Last year, both Crowson and Long won first place in the state at the National Association for Teachers of Singing competition at Mercer University.  In March, Crowson won first place in in [sic] musical theater in the five-state regional competition.

In the June 8 recital, each will sing classical, spiritual and musical theater solos.  Crowson's classical pieces will be Schumann's "Auf dem Rein," Scarlotti's "Gia il sole dal Gange" and Quilter's "Blow, Blow Thy Winter Wind."  In addition, he will sing "Lord I Want to be a Christian" and "De Gospel Train."  His musical theater selections will be "If I Can't Love Her" from Beauty and the Beast, "My Name" from Oliver and "On the Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady.

Long will sing Morley's "Animal Crackers" and Giordano's "Caro mio ben" for her classical selections.  She also will sing "Go Tell it on the Mountain," "Go Down Moses," "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," I've Got the Sun in the Morning" from Annie Get Your Gun, "Beauty and the Beast" from Beauty and the Beast and "As Long as he Needs Me" from Oliver.

Long is the daughter of Tim and Melinda Long.  Crowson is the son of Don and Mary Crowson.

the recital will be at 4:30 p.m. in the church . It is free and open to the public.

Can't believe June is here.  I'm ready!  Looking forward to picking J.B. up this morning – I got off work for the occassion [sic].   

Yesterday was last W.W. class – everyone was so sad to see me leave – it was quite trumatic [sic]!  (They are the ones that are always giving us a hard time!)

Tried to see the Pink Panther – did give it to the Salvation Army!

We will be on the road 4:30 Thursday A.M. – mark my word!  (Unless due to circumstances beyond my control.)

Please don't have home-made ice cream waiting for me!!  Mary V – does it feel good to be out of school?  Serena – see you there?  See "you all."  Love, Berta

1963 John's Sunday School Postcard -Dec.22

John and the rest of the family, except for Roberta who was already in Florida, attended Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Cordele, Georgia on Sunday, December 22, 1963.

 

 

1973 B'day Dinner in Atlanta - Oct.27

After a 1972 birthday brunch in Michigan the 1973 celebration was held in Atlanta.  HH, Jean, John and Mary Va. were joined by Cris from North Carolina and Roberta from Florida for an excess of food at Pittypat's Porch for supper, followed by dessert at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour.  There is a note written at the top of the Pittypat's Porch menu with the date and a mention of the new Mercury, which was now in use for the road trip.  

Farrells's Ice Cream Parlours numbered 120 nationwide in 1975 but most were sold off in the 1980s.  Today there are less than half a dozen, all in California except one in Hawaii.

Subject: Lexington in April

Hello, folks!

Regarding meeting in Lexington, what about Tuesday and/or Wednesday nights?  That would be April 2 and 3, which would leave us a night in Somerset before and one or two after.  The big drawback would be your anniversary on the 3rd!  Let me know what you think about this.

I have been working on the GA reunion and open to suggestions but here is what I have come up with:

Rooms available - Occupants
2 villas - Rob Hortons, Cris Hortons
Dix (2 queens) - John Uibles
6 Doubles (2 queens or 2 fulls) - Kings, Crowsons, Kintners, Robert Kintners, Joe, Aunt Mary
Single King Rooms - HHU, Wendy, Morgans

I am assuming Wendy would like her own room and there are still additional rooms left, which means we can add Serena in her own room or sharing with someone.  This combo uses all rooms that have two beds available!  I also want to check on handicapped accessibility for the rooms.  The villas, as I understand it, have two beds, plus a couch, which is why I tried to give them to those with the oldest children.  The only drawback to this place is no roll away beds, so if siblings do not want to sleep together, one would need to sleep on the floor or negotiate/switch to stay with cousins or aunts/uncles, etc.

Prices per night are: Villas $149, Dix $115, Doubles $89-98, Single $89

Right now I am planning to offer horseback riding one day and canoeing another; there is also golfing and the Appalachian Trail begins in Amicolola Falls State park, not far from Dahlonega, where we are staying.  The area is beautiful in the mountains rich in history and lots of outdoor activities.  It will be a wonderful time together!  Love, MVUC

We would be glad to do one or both nights---up to you!  Just let us know what works best for you.  Go ahead and make reservations and if you would, please get two rooms as I invited my friend, Cheryl and her little girl, Becca to come along to help with driving since Donny has to work.  I will be glad to pay for the extra room.  Again, we don not want to intrude on your anniversary or any celebrations you have planned!

I don't think I told you we have made reservations again at the Cloisters, this time for April 18 and 19.  Don is helping lead a seminar on St. Simon's that week and I will just go down and meet him.  Cheryl has already agreed to keep the children for us, so I think/hope we're all set!

Re: getting you a double room in Dahlonega, I would like to but, right now they are all taken with the families with children and I was thinking Joe and Aunt Mary would want double rooms in case they brought along someone and would want the extra bed.  If that changes, that would certainly be a workable option.

For meals, I figured we would plan to eat dinner together Monday and Tuesday night there in town and I will get that set up.  Sunday night, folks may well want to eat at the Inn (they have a restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner) where we are staying; they have a wonderful home style meal they serve (family style) until 7PM.  If folks get in after that, there are other options in town as well.  I just thought it would be easier to be able to eat right there.  The Inn does do a continental breakfast each morning.  If we use the rooms as planned, they will have only 4 rooms left in the place those three nights!

Subject: Georgia reunion dates

Dear Family,

We arrive in Dahlonega on Sunday, July 21 and depart on Wednesday, July 24.  The Inn will not take reservations more than 6 months in advance, so that should be finalized soon and then I'll send out packets about activities, etc and more details.  If you are making flight plans, it would be easiest for you to fly into Atlanta as it is only 1 hour from Atlanta and 4 lane most of the way.  From any other direction, it is CURVY mountain roads!

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [Atlanta GA to Chattanooga TN] Had good breakfast, drove to downtown Atlanta for Toy Show, supposed to be the last one. Drove up Peachtree Rd to Oxford Book Store [closed in 1997, then reopened but now called Oxford Comics Games & More], had lunch at a Mexican Restaurant, then west on Paces Rd to I-75. Made a stop at New Echota, old Cherokee village - interesting. Had reservations at Choo Choo in Chattanooga, 20% off coupon, still high at $68, though half of rail car was interesting. We were in #756, king size bed, long walk to toilet, went for swim. Dinner there was $9.75 and up so we went elsewhere and had soup bar for $1.29. Bought a belt at Zayre's (next door) going out of business sale. [All Zayre's were closed by 1990, mostly bought out by Ames, but some continued as TJ Maxx.]

Wednesday 1990 - Planted last year's peas (they were free). GG back from Florida. Went to Hillsboro square dancing, Marshall Flippo, $6/couple.

Saturday 1992 - Took Hortons to Cincinnati airport. The Burlington Coat Factory was closed, so spent a little time at Mt Washington Library. Then met Sankers at China Gourmet Restaurant at 3340 Erie Ave. Sankers talking of going to Alaska.

Sunday 1993 - We were in Westboro for the 9AM church service. The Bishop canceled out due to the storm. The DS spoke on Psalms 18:25-30 "Leaping over walls" -- 1) physical 2) boredom 3) unclear goals 4) prejudice 5) fears and 6) sin. This is their dedication date. Had a nice visit with Howard Hodel [?] of A and M Farm Orchards in Midland. He mentioned a John Hasz who went from this area to Fairbanks.

Monday 1994 - Got new Mobil Tour Book from Catherine. With check from CSX their four night Easter Package is $975 a night per person for a double. In 1989, double rooms at Shaker Village were $44-80 per night.

Thursday 1996 - Another 8:30 meeting with Leadership Clinton re: new County Book. Forbes dropping out of Presidential race.

Saturday 1998 - Lions Club Pancake Day - no big crowd. Jean still collecting those snaps off the pop bottles. John should be in China now. [John reports in 2010: he went to China for 10 days with two friends to check out orphanages, which we were unable to see. One Friend, Tom Marcelain, went on to become one of our two Common Pleas judges here in Licking County.]

Monday 1989 - [Rugby Tennessee to Atlanta Georgia] Took a tour of Rugby TN [built in 1880 by an English author, Thomas Hughes, as an experimental utopian colony, 72 miles NW of Knoxville, 35 miles west of I-75], the library opened in 1882 was interesting, no lights or heat. Breakfast included in our room rate. Had lunch in car. Stayed at Days Inn, Exit 28 on I-285 [near Atlanta] $42 with breakfast. Drove over to Stone Mountain area, 2nd exit and visited the new K-Mart - Super Store - the American Way - 68 check outs [lanes]. Bought new Roos shoes $20.

Tuesday 1990 - Roberta left Lake Worth again, real dedication. Don and MV arrived, went to Emmaus meeting in Wilmington. Planted grass seed at Thompson's, spinach and lettuce in our garden. Another day in the low eighties. Roberta likes the rubber balls with string for her cat "Baby Beethoven." Cris is getting laid off.

Wednesday 1991 - Ice on the trees, Mother seemed good tonight. Marshall Flippo dance again, he is from the Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach MO, Kirkwood Lodge, $595 per couple for 6 nights, includes meals, lodging and dancing.

Saturday 1993 - Met Roger Dalton at extended care for his Mother to sign Power of Attorney. A big snow storm with really strong winds. Interesting how the snow ridges up. Lions Club canceled the evening shift of the Pancake Supper. Sent in reservations for the Nova Scotia and Ashland OR trips.

Sunday 1994 - Mission Sunday at UMC. We had Jeannette Shugay from Clermont County speak, a black lady who was a great speaker. Sunday School - 71, 108 at Church. The Barrs joined our church. We met the Sankers at the Midland Restaurant, they seemed to enjoy it. They are planning on going to Seattle next month and renting a car to drive to the LA area and back.

Monday 1995 - Got oil changed on the Honda at Eddie Lowes - 5500 miles. Emptied trash at church. Keith is a great guy but doesn't seem to see the jobs that need to be done. Ev and Ann Bailey here with a new Toyota. Another great day. Got Park Bank Annual Report.

Wednesday 1996 - Went to John Harner's and got a pick-up load of manure - off concrete floor - had it all done in 90 minutes.

Thursday 1997 - Jean went to see Dr. Lippit [?] in Cincinnati, then I went to Otterbein to open lock box on Mrs. Finch. Had supper at the Sankers.

Saturday 1999 - [Portugal and Spain trip through April 8]

Tuesday 1989 - Jean got me a small heart box of candy, took it to Wells.  Jean had UMW at the parsonage.  I can struggle through playing "Happy Birthday" on the piano.

Wednesday 1990 - Jean had Dr. appt at 8:15, then on to Dayton to get wheel chair lift in new van.  Hard rain.  Dropped the van off at the Body Shop then had lunch at Ponderosa.

Thursday 1991 - [to NYC]  Took Hortons to airport, they got on standby on next flight to WPB and we flew to NYC, staying at Penington Friends House @$90/night

Sunday 1993 - [NYC back to Ohio] Went to John St. UMC, oldest congregation in U.S., then to South Street Seaport where Jean got some marked down Christmas earrings.  Left on Delta from LaGuardia.

Monday 1994 - The [GG and Bob] Walkers went with us to Wilmington, Mystery Night, $25 each, which Judy Gano spearheaded.  They had a buffet dinner at the municipal building, then part of a trial in the C.P. Court Room, then about 20 stores where clues were buried.  Finished with dessert back at the M building.  Nice day for a change. 

Tuesday 1995 - We went for our physicals.  My weight is 152 pounds, down 7# in 10 years.  Went to CMH for x-rays, net cost was $24 for each of us.  Had lunch at Ponderosa.  Jean took Joanne Gruber to Emmaus meeting. 

Wednesday 1996 - Lincoln Day Dinner at Roberts Arena.  Ohio Treasurer Ken Blackwell* spoke, mostly on the flat tax idea.  NV had a table, $15 each.  In Newark it's $30 each. [*Blackwell served as Mayor of Cincinnati 1979-80, Ohio Treasurer 1984-1988, Ohio Secretary of State 1999-07 and ran for Governor in 2006 but was defeated by Ted Strickland.]

Friday 1997 - [South Africa]

Saturday 1998 - Sankers had us and five other couples down for an evening (travel things like picture of Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc. all around).  After dinner a quartet called the Dixie Kings showed up.  One couple from Vandalia 45377, Robert and Barbara Walker have had a house at Chautauqua for 23 years.  Others included the Bradshaws, a German couple, and the Fryes who had taken the Palace on Wheels in India.  Looks like Meyers [?] is about to open.  Gas = 91.9¢/gallon.

Sunday 1999 - [Georgia]  Visited Carter Center in Atlanta.  Had supper at Cafe Tu Tu Tango [now closed].

Monday 1989 - Let Jean out at Dayton Library meeting, a wet day, then met her in Wilmington for supper at Frisch's. Senior citizen liver and onions is $3.25.

Tuesday 1990 - Took Orville Harner to Lincoln Day Dinner at Roberts Arena, 2 for $25. Bob Taft spoke. Sat with Hagemeyers and the Hubert Peeles [?].

Saturday 1993 - [NYC] Went to Javits Center then to _______ for lunch, $28 each, very nice, pretty pictures of the Basque countryside. Too much dessert so they wrapped it up like a basket (chocolate cake mousse) and it did taste much better that night. Went to Strand bookstore and then had supper in the room.

Sunday 1994 - [home from Newark]

Tuesday 1996 - Dow Jones hits 5600. Virginia Hildebrant in extensive care.

Thursday 1997 - [South Africa]

Friday 1998 - Dow Jones hits 8300.

Saturday 1999 - [Lake Worth FL to Valdosta GA] Had lunch at Atlantis Country Club with Roberta and Sid. Left at 1:30 and had supper at Lake City at a Mexican Restaurant, quite a crowd there. Drove on to Valdosta, stayed at Hampton Inn near a mall with a cafeteria.

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Wednesday 1989 - [to Peoria IL] Jean had Womens Club lunch at Ponderosa, supper at MCL, [a cafeteria, that location now closed] in Indianapolis on 38th Ave.  Jack Perry special (small piece of meat, 2 vegetables and roll for $2.75).  Staying in Days Inn in East Peoria. 

Thursday 1990 -Went to Wilmington, got 3 estimates to repair van.  $700+.  Went square dancing, first time in a couple months.

Friday 1991 - 2nd annual Estate Planning at the Ohio Center Holiday Inn.  Saw Stu CFO [?] from Park National Bank and Tom from the Lancaster office.  Had supper at Cracker Barrel on way home.

Saturday 1992 - Lions Club Pancake Supper $3.50.  Don Liggett called about this fall Asian trip.

Tuesday 1994 - Ice storm.  Special election for children's services.  Cooper Snyder to be speaker at both the Highland and Clinton County Lincoln Day dinners.  UMW canceled because of the weather, two months in a row canceled due to weather..  Jean went with Valetta to Wilmington to work on the scroll. 

Thursday 1996 - [Bermuda] We ate with the Spencers (from Birmingham AL) at Tillingham Dept. Store in Hamilton [closed in 2005 per HH].

Saturday 1997 - [London] 

Sunday 1998 - Sermon topic, teflon or velcro.  Boy Scout Sunday, 119 present.  We went to Frisch's about 2:30 [or $2.30?].  Serena called and told us of reservation at Grove Park Inn [in Asheville NC]  for $89.  Talked to Paul and Virginia Rulon, his face seemed puffy.  Went to College Library, not much activity. Had nice email from Wendy, she's taking 13 hours in college and hopes to graduate in 2002.

Monday 1999 - [Perry GA to Amelia Island FL]  Drove out to Camellia Hdqs in Fort Valley GA -- this was their big week [flowers at peak, probably Massee Lane Camellia Garden, headquarters of the American Camellia Society].  Then to Andersonville where the Civil War POW camp was.  Had lunch in Plains GA.  Parked where Jimmy Carter would have SS.  Had reservation at Ritz Carlton at Amelia Island.  Had asked for cheapest room, $139, but got beautiful south facing ocean view, plenty of room.  Their rates go up 3/1.  Had supper downtown at Beech Street Grill.

Mary, do you remember what you fixed them for lunch – maybe turkey sandwiches?  Perry GA is on I-75  south of Macon, and according to the New Perry Hotel website it has been "a favorite rest stop for travelers since 1925," 619 miles south of New Vienna.  This would have been Granddad's last trip to Florida.  Would Dad (or one of the Hortons?) have been driving them south and John went with them?  Or was Granddad still driving?  I like John's creative use of language and exaggeration in "a grillion funs."  Also, his concern about Roberta and Serena handling the paper route without him.  Although the New Perry Hotel survives, the Quality Courts Motel and the pictured Japanese Rock Garden lives on only in vintage post cards.   The plaque at the bottom of the garden picture reads: "If you have a mind at peace, a heart that cannot harden, go find a door that opens wide upon a lovely garden."

Consider this post a preview of coming attractions as in 2011 I hope to feature more vintage family correspondance.

Peach Fresca

In RUK's honor we have stocked up on Diet Coke and Peach Fresca---the Fresca is very good. We have been taking it easy this morning reading both yesterday and today's papers and I made a trip to Kroger. We will be showing the Kings the grand tour of Dublin (take all of about 10-15 minutes) and then have lunch at Brian's subs (Mom and Dad may remember the boisterous guy from NJ at the sandwich place).

RUK is on her second Diet Coke of the day so we better get moving. SERENA the muffins you sent were excellent. I tried each flavor this morning! AND RUK said that they have come to expect their coffee and tea upon waking. Will not happen until Wednesday next week!
