1949 Jean's postcard to her mother -July 6

Wed. -- July 6
Dearest Mother,

Just tucked Catherine in for the night and gave her spanking no. 1 for she refused to stay on her tummy & screamed & cried after she'd roll over on her back. Mary & Bill's children were over today & we ate together tonight.  Mother & Daddy Uible went to a Lions club dinner.  Realize I also left 2 protective sheets in her crib -- one rubber & one plastic.  Plan to buy a mattress soon.  Using one Harold used to have on his bed.  Wrote this on porch at dusk so excuse if you cannot read.  All well.  Think of you often.  Made home-made ice cream tonight.

Thanks for everything -- Love to all from all of us -- J-H-C

Dear John,

Nice seeing you & the camp last night.  Glad you are enjoying yourself and learning new things as well.  Maybe you can help me learn the Morse Code.

Picked your Mother some beans this A.M. -- your garden looks nice.  Grandma brought us up some home made apple sauce.  Yum Yum.  Uncle Bill is out of the hospital and getting along fine.  Keep up the good swimming, John.

1989 Roberta's Letter -July 2

7/2/89
Hi ––

I'm listening to the Sunday night Dr. Dobson's program -- tho actually I heard most of the week's programs!

I am sorry that I won't be able to make the OHIO scene -- just hope Miss Wendy didn't miss me too much!  Esp. considering my lack of vacation time it's good that I didn't go!  (I try at all times to stay on the right side of my dear boss!)  Esp -- since I make more $ than she does!

I've been walking w/ the walking club 5 times this past week -- 3 of those walks were shopping mall walks -- 1 at Metro -- 2 at Smaller malls.  Real advantage in being in the Air Conditioning!

We do have 1 new resident moving in Thursday -- have 2 more on the fence.

Sid et al are having a great time in San Francisco -- he has commented how expensive the city is -- of course he does not go 2nd class!  I'm glad he is going to Oregon & Washington -- new frontier for him.  (as w/ Sara & Cynthia!)

I got my hair cut -- got a perm about 1 month ago so it looks quite good between the per -- then cut.

Have you read "Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten" -- or something like that title?  It's got lots of short - but philosophical themes!

How many did the OHIO Bike Ride?  The phone is ringing again -- #4 since I started this!

Much Love,
Roberta

1969 GHU letter to John -July 2

Wed. morning
[July 2, 1969 -- not 1979
as written on the letter, the
postmark definitely says 1969]
Dear John,

It was fun to receive your card yesterday morning & glad to know you are getting along so well.  You would have a cold swim this morning I expect for the air is rather cool for a change.

Received a letter from Aunt Mary this morning & she said Uncle Bill is now home from the hospital & is getting along fine.

I made a little apple sauce yesterday & it tasted real good even though the apples are little & rather green.

You have a good News J. substitute but I miss my Jack boy for your Dad brings the Jack letters when convenient as he passes by.

Have a nice time & a lot of fun.

Love, Grandma

1969 HH letter to John -June 30

June 30, 1969

Dear John --

How do you like M.V.'s letter - she typed it all herself -- also put the stamp in place.  [If MV's letter was saved it has not been found yet.]

We stopped at J R yesterday on the way home for a swim.  MV even floated around on a tube in the children's pool.  Serena really got a tan yesterday.

Bet you are having the time of your life, John.  Are you getting a chance to work on any of your scout requirements?

Your garden looks good -- the dahlias are coming out in bloom.  We are looking forward to seeing you Wednesday evening.

Dad

1969 Jean's letter to John -June 30

June 30, 1969
Dearest John,

The weather has really been hot here but imagine it is about the same at Yellow Springs and Camp Birch.  Hope you are enjoying everything.  Serena really had a full day by working at the school til after three and then delivering all the papers but was home by 5:00 and didn't seem too poohed out.  Hope all the substitutes did as well.  She said she saw Benny somewhere along the way.  We combined your route and hers and it worked real well.  Only one person was forgotten and you didn't have them written down so it really wasn't her fault and when I copied the list to combine them I never caught it.  They didn't call til 8:00 and by then Daddy had taken Serena and Mary Virginia swimming.  Roberta was gone with the other car so I told her if she forgot anyone too far I wasn't excited about going too far on the bicycle to deliver but guess where the one forgotten was -- Kiblers -- so it could have been alot worse.

We are getting alot of heat lightning or something.  It sounds like a bowling alley overhead.  There were tornado warnings out but they recalled them a couple of hours ago.  Some place must be getting something!!!

I heard on the radio this morning that Jerri Baker was in the hospital for surgery so while I was taking Wiggles for a walk this evening by some coincidence we got over that way and asked Mrs. Baker.  She said that she had had her adenoids taken out on Saturday -- felt real bad then but it is all she can do to keep her quiet today.

It seems like you have been gone a real long time and no doubt it does to you too.  Roberta got back this evening and plans to go to Dayton early tomorrow morning and stay for a couple of days.  It sure seems strange with just four of us here most of the time.

How did you like that card that Mary Virginia sent you.  She came in and typed it out all by herself -- just happened to get one with a stamp on it.  She wasn't too happy that Daddy readdressed it so you might get it.  If anyone thinks you get cards written in code you will know what they are referring to.

We haven't heard from Catherine since you left but hope to hear from her tomorrow morning and perhaps a card from you too.

Boy it really is raining, and storming now and the fire siren just went off -- don't know where the fire is but the siren hasn't blown too long but has a couple of times.  Perhaps we'll have more to write about tomorrow.

Received your card and CONGRATULATIONS are in order for trying for the Beginner Swimmer title.  You really got alot on that postcard -- almost needed a microscope to read it.  Maybe I mean magnifying glasses.  Anyway we were real happy to hear from you and hear how things are going.  Have they gotten down to your feet yet and checked on that splinter -- any bother?

We haven't heard from Catherine yet so guess her letter will wait to be mailed til we get confirmation of her new address.  Perhaps we will hear this afternoon.  I miss my mail carrier, errand runner and delivery boy not to mention gardener.  The rain we got last night really helped your garden (and ours) and helped cool things off alot.  Roberta left before five this morning.  Will send you card down to show Grandma when Mary Virginia mails this.  Know you are as happy to receive mail as we ar so keep the cards coming.

All our very best love and

1969 Jean's Letter to John -June 29

Sunday --
June 29, 1969
Dearest John,

Just want you to know that we are thinking about you while you are at Boy Scout Camp.  Hope you really have fun -- that your cold gets no worse and that you make alot of new friends there.

We are already looking forward to Wednesday evening when we will see you again.

We hope you won't miss your paper route too much.  I know your customers will miss your "goooood service" and will miss you but if you write once in awhile we would really appreciate it.  And perhaps we can get a letter off to you once in awhile.  Remember it's your turn now!

Mary Virginia and Wiggles send their love and hope that you won't forget them when you are away.

We will try to take care of all your plants for you but you have so many -- it is really a big job.  I enjoy the beautiful red petunia in your garden from the kitchen window.  It really brightens up the view.  And soon even more flowers will be blooming there.

Make the most of the weather -- good and bad for there are advantages to both you know.  And we will be looking forward to seeing you Wednesday evening.

All our very best love
and XXXXXX,
Mother & Dad

1949 Jean's Letter to HH -June 22

Wednesday --
June 22, 1949
Dearest Snicklefritz,

Today has been cool compared to the last few days and we have often been wondering where "our wandering boy is tonight."  No doubt you got back to Columbus in better time than your previous departure from here.

Catherine has been put to bed for the 3rd time tonight.  I don't know what her trouble is.  The sight of her crib seems to give her renewed energy but after she's up she's soon tired.

Mr. & Mrs. R.N. Cochran (Jane's mother & father) stopped tonight and so ended my letter writing for Wednesday.

Again I'm attempting to write -- after receiving your postal this morning.  Today has been a steady stream of company.  Right after I gave Katie her bath & put her to bed for the morning, Bob Walmer arrived -- from Camp Lee -- he had deposited his family up at Grahams for bed (they drove all night -- too hot to sleep in Washington).  He stayed til noon and just after he pulled out, Bob drove in with Roger and Blaine & Dick Cochran.  They hadn't eaten so prepared lunch for them (4 hungry males)!  As soon as Mother came I rushed upstairs to dress as 2 girls I was in high school with came at 1:00.  Before they left Mary Margaret Graham Walmer & her niece arrived.  Catherine became fussy before they left (about 4:00) so I took her for a ride in her carriage & ran an errand for Mother at the same time.  By that time, everyone wanted dinner -- so now Bob's gone back to PGH with Roger.  Dick & Blaine are staying here tonight.

Mr. Ranney only stayed Tuesday night as Mrs. Peckenstein [?] called yesterday to say her roomer never came so I moved him up last night.

Faye Fickes Rosso gave me a surprise yesterday when she said, "I hear Jeanne Campbell is getting married!"  Later when I took Mrs. Ranney up I stopped in to see her (Mrs. Campbell) & she just laughed at the idea.  Faye said Mrs. Trimble had told her so I took it for so much gossip coming from that source.

Sharon, who lives next door to Cousin Maude came over to see Catherine when I had her on her parket [walk?] yesterday.  She (Sharon) told her mother she wanted to take her home.  I insisted on something in exchange so at last an idea came to her.  She jumped down & picked up a little gray baby kitten that was still nursing & dumped it in my lap.  Think you'd be interested in making a trade with her?

Am sending Mary & Bill an anniversary card -- hope you won't mind too much.

Everyone & me especially is confident that you'll just buzz right through the Bar and make a very successful attorney.  Catherine & I are anxiously awaiting your return from the strenuous tasks ahead.  Be assured we have the utmost confidence in our great big handsome hunk of Honeybunch (the honey-est bunch of handsomeness on earth!)

All of our very best love,
Jean and Catherine
xxx ---- Katy

P.S,  Doc Fisher has added burden now -- the support of a grandson coming to David & Myrtle -- wed last Apr.
P.P.S.  Cousin Maude passes & says "hello"

1979 John's Postcard -June 19

St. Paul's Cathedral, London:
During the Second World War when fire and destruction laid waste all around, St. Paul's Cathedral survived as if by a miracle.  When the smoke and dust had cleared away, Londoners saw their cathedral as they has never seen it before, free from the encroachment of tightly-packed office blocks.  St. Paul's was Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece it took him 35 years to build from 1675-1710.

June 19, 1979

Dear family,

Arrived in London this morning.  Quick walk through the city and now I'm on a train for York and Edinburgh.  My flight reservation is for Tuesday June 26th -- arrive at JFK at 1:30 p.m.  Plan to go to the farm same evening or by next morning (Wed.)  Look forward to seeing you soon.

Love, John

Will Bert be at the farm before Friday?  If she's not I'll fly.

Caption: GARNER MEMORIAL BUILDING, UVALDE, TEXAS 78801
Former home of Ex-Vice President John Nance Garner.  The home is dedicated to the memory of the late Ettie R. Garner, wife and secretary of Mr. Garner.

[Trivia facts of the day: Garner was VP during the first eight years (1933-1941) of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency.  He didn't think Roosevelt should seek a 3rd term and ran against him in the primary election.  On Garner's 95th birthday, November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy called to wish him a Happy Birthday.  Kennedy was killed a few hours later.  Garner lived another four years, dying in November 1967.]

1949 Birthday card to GHU -June

Monday -- [June 1949]
[From HH]
Dear Folks,

The letter came this morning and from the enclosures assume that you have gotten the diploma by now.  That will be the father's day and birthday present for this year.  Making no promises about next week. -- HA.  [Bar Exam?] At least I'm a law school graduate.

I got home last night about 9:30.  Betsy [the car] ran just like a new car.  Stopped briefly at the SOHIO station in Steubenville and saw Bill's [Horton]  brother Leonard there.

Ate the last of the cherries yesterday, and the apple yesterday afternoon.  It was a nice evening for driving.

Glad to hear that the roller [or rubber?] case came out OK.  If you will look in the Ohio Bar, which you should have gotten, either Saturday or today, on the front cover under "Court of Appeals" you may see the case listed.

Catherine has certainly "filled out" in the last two weeks since I've been here.  She has plenty of room in her big bed.

[From Jean]

Harold has taken over the feeding of Catherine while I add a note.  Mother has had him busy transplanting flowers, etc. so no doubt he'll be glad to get back to Columbus for some uninterrupted studying.

Calvin's "Reporter" came to Columbus -- so he (Harold) saw his notice of graduation in there.

We had a nice visit in Pittsburgh arriving home last Thursday -- while there, we attended two operettas -- "Song of Norway" and "The Chocolate Soldier" -- both very good.  The weather was so warm that Catherine wore her sunsuit most of the time.

Yesterday -- another scorcher we decided to go to see the Hinermans in the afternoon.  You no doubt remember them as Sarah was at the Rehearsal Dinner & helped out so much before the wedding.

Mother has been becoming so devoted to Catherine I'm afraid she won't let her move to New Vienna.  She says you have two babies and she should keep Catherine.  She (Mother) has gotten so much enjoyment from her.  You'd almost think Catherine was her first grandchild.

Catherine raises her head so high now when you put her on her stomach.  Mother says she's going to become another "Meddlesome Matty" -- (that was my first nickname).  While we were in Pittsburgh.  Catherine & Mary Ellen took turns sleeping in the junior bed.  She really outgrew her basket & could only sleep in it -- after she had gone to sleep in the jr. bed first.  I expected to see her crawl out of the bassinet every morning.

We gave her the cradle gym and she seemed to enjoy it.  She had to taste it before she thoroughly approved of it though.

Harold says Marianne has grown so much since he last saw her.  I just hounded him with questions about her & the rest of the family.

We've told the Independent office about sending the paper  but I hope you won't be bothered with postage for it any longer.

The little pink silk rubber panties which you gave Catherine are really grand and she has gotten so much wear out of the.  The others are very nice too and I wore them on her nearly every day and save the others for special occasions.  She has played & played wth the little yellow lamb.  Older children seem to love it too for they squeeze it & play with it to get her interested.

Many, many, more happy birthday's Mother Uible.

Love, Jean, Harold
and Catherine

1979 Catherine's Letter -June 19

Tuesday, June 19, 1979
Dear Mother, Dad, and Roberta & Mary,

Hi!  I guess the capital letters have the jumps today.  We were glad to get your letter yesterday and to talk to Mom & Dad on Saturday and hear about Mary Virginia's progress.

I am going to try to make our reservations for Christmas when we go to the airport on Thursday.  Our tentative plans are to leave Portland on Dec. 15 and spend the first week in Ohio, then fly to Boston on the 23rd and return to Portland on the 30th.  I'm very sorry that we can't spend Christmas in Ohio but we feel like we are somewhat obligated to spend Christmas with Gerry's family since we have never spent a holiday with them.  If we could only figure out some way to be in two places at once.  Also it would mean that our longest flight would be the return one which is when we gain the most time.  Will that work in OK with whatever plans you have?

We got a 19" color TV yesterday.  It is a Zenith and is really a change from our small black & white.  We gave up on that one that Chambers had.  It is still tied up with the insurance company, would have had no warranty plus we would have had to go to Eugene to pick it up.  We are really enjoying the movies on HBO.  It costs $10 per month but we figure it would a minimum of $10 if we were to go to one movie a month in Bend plus the fact that we hate to drive that far.  It is also nice not to have the movies cut up by commercials.  They show the same movie several times during a month on different days and at different times so you can watch it when it is most convenient.

I was supposed to go to court this week because of this one tenant who hadn't paid their rent.  However the tenant came up with the money so the judge said we'd have to take the money and give them 30-day notice to move if we wanted them out.  I had already given them the 30-day notice on June 6th so now we'll see if they are out of the apartment by July 6th or if we'll have to go back to court.  At any rate I am becoming more familiar with the necessary legal processes involved.

Hope Mary Virginia continues to improve and is home soon.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

Dear Family,

Arrived here last night.  Beautiful city -- the canals are so pretty at night.  Plan to see the countryside of Holland then on to Paris tomorrow.  Go to England June 19th.  Haven't found out when my flight is.  Will call when I arrive in New York.

1979 Family Letter -June 17

Sunday evening --
June 17, 1979
Dearest Family --

This has been a very different FATHER'S DAY today but a much better as Mary Virginia has much improved.  She is now able to walk around the halls with help and can get to the bathroom on her own so is hoping that the doctor will say she can go home soon.  They took out her IV's Wednesday and the rest of the tubes (catheter and drainage tube for blood) the next day and began to feed her more until now she is on a regular diet.  She gets to choose the following days menu for herself so can't complain too much about the choice of food -- she eats real well most everything except vegetables like squash, spinach, carrots, etc.

Roberta went over this morning and stayed with Mary Virginia while Dad and I went to church at home and then took Grandma over and I stayed while the three of them went out for lunch.  Dad stopped on the way back and picked some strawberries at Stokes'.   They said they would still have some next week and the red raspberries will also be ready.  Just finished stemming about three quarts and put some in the freezer for later and also had some to eat.

Glad to talk to you on the phone, Catherine but sorry to miss your call, Serena -- Roberta relayed the message.  Wondered if you told the hospital when you called that it was long distance for someone got a call at the nurses' desk this evening.  We were there from about 8:30 yesterday morning to almost that time last night with the exception of about a half hour when we ate in the hospital cafeteria.  Dad said he heard the phone ring at home yesterday afternoon but by the time he got inside it had quit ringing.

Mary Virginia had so much company all earlier in the week when she wasn't really up to it and very little this weekend.  She has received many bouquets of flowers including three beautiful ones of homegrown roses.  Debbie Haines brought one in -- she works at the hospital from 11-7:30AM.  She stopped one morning and got your address, Serena -- no, I think she got it from Grandma but we talked about you.  I couldn't remember for sure how long your internship lasts but she wanted to stop and see you and thought it would be wonderful if you two could get jobs in the same place and share an apartment.  No doubt she has written you that she is coming your way around the second week of July.  She also said that No???e was wanting your address as she was going to be in Iowa.

The sad news of the family is that Cris and Marita have broken up and Cris feel that it is all his fault as he was putting in so much work after hours, etc.  He felt sorry for someone who had been moved from Philadelphia and so invited him to dinner, etc. and this fellow and Marita soon fell in love.  Cris is such a cine [fine?] fellow but seems to have bad luck with all his feminine relationships.  Dad called him this evening and he said one big mistake he made was not staying in Europe when he had the chance so suggested that John not be in a big rush to get married but see some of the world.  When Cris was with Cincinnati Milacron they wanted him to stay in Holland longer and also work in Germany but he turned it down to rush back here to be with Rainey (spelling).

The Hortons are planning to go to Marianne's over the Fourth of July and Cris is to be there the weekend before so Roberta and Grandma are now planning on seeing them too the same time -- not staying with the Kintners but in Lancaster and then going up into New England and to Quebec.  They plan to leave here June 30.   How does this fit in with your plans, John?

[Love, etc.]

Avon Theatre Opened Thursday
Five Nights Weekly to be Open
NEW VIENNA – Last Wednesday evening when the doors of the Avon Theatre were opened for the first show, "Blondie," New Vienna was suggestive of Wilmington on New Years Eve at the Murphy.  The Theatre was filled with people for the first show.  Many were unable to obtain seats and waited for the second show, at which the house was again filled.  Ladies were presented with orchids.  For Friday night, when "The Hardys Ride High" was shown, the house was well filled.  In comparison with other movies, many movie fans are stating the Avon is equal to the best.

The theatre has a seating capacity of 280 and is equipped with latest type, comfortable seats.  Screen and equipment is the latest and most efficient.

J. Henry Davidson of Lynchburg, operates the Avon.  He also has theatres at Georgetown, Sardinia, Greenfield and Lynchburg.  K.R. Roberts is associated with him at Georgetown and Greenfield.

Millard Kessler is manager of the theatre.  He was for many years with Bell's Theatre at Hillsboro.

The theatre will be open Friday and Saturday, Sunday and Monday and on Wednesday for a 10¢ bargain night.

One of Finest in State
Without question, New Vienna can now boast of one of the finest municipal building to be found in any small town in Ohio.  It contains a theatre, room for U.S. Post office, mayor's office and council chambers and fire department headquarters.

The building is of brick and concrete and is fireproof throughout.  Construction was started October 7, 1938 by C.J. Uible, New Vienna contractor.  It has latest type indirect lighting system, hot water heating system, and asbestos tile floors in office rooms.  Venetian blinds are to be installed int he post office room and council chambers.
Located at Third and Main
The building stands on a lot 98 by 165 feet, at the corner of Third and Main streets.  Properties of Mae and Charles Nordyke and Stella Hunt were razed to make room for the structure.  The building is 63 by 100 feet.  A waterbound macadam street with curb and gutters is being laid around the back and south side of the building.

In short, nothing has been left undone that would add to the beauty and convenience.

Approximately 45% of the cost was given by the government as a P.W.A. [Public Works Administration, also known as WPA, Works Progress Administration project.]  A bond issue was passed by the voters of New Vienna making the village's share possible.

Grunkemeyer and Sullivan and Associates of Cincinnati were architects on the building.  H.O. Townsley usually represented the firm.

Village officials are: James R. West, mayor; R.J. Rulon, clerk; Dr. L.H. Fullerton, president of council, Oscar Dennis, Fred Johnson, Carey Fox, and Clay Richard Clark, councilmen; Mrs. Marie Simkins, treasurer.

The dedication committee is composed of G. C. Wright, chairman, Willard Mongold, D.R. Smith, Dr. L.H. Fullerton, C.J. Uible, H.M. Phillips, and Mrs. Irene Gray.

Fred G. Johnson (~1881-1961?, NVHS 1895) - 1930 census, living with his parents Wavious (?) J. (~1856-?) and Ella (~1860-?) Johnson on Laymon Road, occupation auto supplies salesman. He must have moved into NV, in order to be on the council?  Or it could have been a different Fred Johnson.  John and Linda Levo's great-grandfather, Fred S. Johnson 1855-1938, died a year prior to this event so it's doubtful he would have been considered a member of the Council.

Robert Joseph Rulon 1887-1967, lived on Church St. in 1930 and was employed as school janitor, married to Abigail, father of William, Curtis, Alberta, Paul, Janet, +

Dr. L.H. Fullerton, 1905-1979, lived on 2nd St., near school in 1930 with wife, Elsie, and baby Marguerite. His wife, Elsie Staubus Fullerton, died in 1994, she was related to the Bernards.  Later in the 1930s he had an addition built on to the front of the house to the east of the new Municipal building for his office and lived in the rear part.  Patients had to climb a high set of stairs to reach the office.  In the 1950s he moved his office into the then new medical building on 3rd Street south of the Municipal building and built a new house east of NV on SR-28.

Oscar R. Dennis, 1880-?, lived on Main St. in 1930 with daughter Hilda Cade and baby grandson, Robert M. Cade. His occupation is listed as Real Estate Broker.

Carey W. Fox 1877-?, lived on Main St. in 1930 with extended family. Carey's occupation is listed as garage mechanic.

Clay Richard "Dick" Clark 1902-1982 (NVHS 1921), in 1930 he, his wife Gertrude and son, Jacque, are listed as living on "Vienna Valley Road" near then baby Harold Thornburg and his parents, so perhaps that is now Thornburg Road. He was later the manager of the Farm Bureau and Gertrude owned Clark Clothing Store in New Vienna. In 1930 his occupation is listed as farm laborer.

(Etta) Marie Simkins 1894-?, lived on corner of College & 2nd Sts, mother of Eloise and Fred Allen Simkins. She was a widow and her occupation in 1930 is listed as dressmaker.

Others on Dedication Committee:
Willard [R.W.] "Shorty" Mongold, 1898-1975. In 1930 he and his family lived on Main St., and he was employed as a drill factory machinist. He founded (?) Southern Ohio Tool & Die, and was a good friend of C.J. Uible and was the main reason the Uibles moved to New Vienna in 1927. Picture of him and clipping about Southern Ohio Tool Co. at this link.

D.R. Smith, owned gas station on corner of SR-73 and SR-28, which is now Shell. He sold this service station lot for big $ per HH, invested the money in property in Florida, and then lost it during a real estate bust. His wife was active in the pro-library movement of the NV Women's Club in the late 1930s.

Harley Martin "H.M." Phillips 1880-1960, owner of clothing store where Bill Holmes worked, lived on Main Street in 1930.

Mrs. Irene Gray 1884-1974 lived on West St. in 1930. Her husband, Burl, was a Veterinarian. In 1930 they had three children: Louis, Lane [or Zane? NVHS'38] and Marjorie (NVHS'40).  Marjorie later married Ernie Sullivan and ran "Good Deal" Realty in New Vienna.  According to HH, Marjorie was likable but a bit ditzy, and was famous for burning her Christmas tree in the street (SR-73 just north of Christian Church) in front of her house on New Years Day.

Dear Dad,

I didn't realize that Father's Day was approaching so soon.  I wondered whether you are in Ohio or in Oregon.  Happy Father's Day wherever you are.

Arrived in Stockholm this morning.  Walked around all day -- leaving on a night train tonight for Norway.  Travelling with a nice fellow from Alabama who has his Ph.D. in Medicine.  I'll be in England a week from today.  See you soon.

Love, John

1979 Family Letter -June 11

Monday --
June 11, 1979
Dearest Family -

Well we are little earlier this week in writing but it may be short.  The big news is that Mary Virginia finally is feeling better -- after going to Clinton Memorial Hospital and having two operations in two days and the cause of her trouble is or was a ruptured appendix.  The first operation was Saturday morning and then they just found an abscess with about a pint of pus in it and after much discussion and bleeding (on her part) they went back in surgery for a couple of hours and they found the bad appendix and more abscesses and more drainage so she should soon begin to feel better.  She is on IVs and has at least four pints of blood given to her by some generous donor and as soon as they remove the catheter and let her have some liquid other than intravenously she will be much happier.

John all this brings back memories of the time that you were in the hospital with only me around for consolation.  I'm really thankful that Dad is here and Roberta got home Thursday evening and has been a great help too.  Now it is John that is in Europe (Roberta was there in '72 when John was feeling so low with typhoid and Serena was in South America).  Catherine is further this time and Serena is half way there, across country.

The doctor has suggested that we give up going to Oregon at least next week but Dad called and found that we could cancel two or three days before hand so he is his usual super-optimistic self.  At least we will not be driving to Chicago on the 20th. and we'll let you know more definitely about the rest of the trip.  Dad has reservations to be in Madison for the American Law Institute ABA course beginning June 25 and the rest is hanging in mid air.  He had said that he would be glad to pick you up the following Saturday in DeKalb, Serena but that depends on whether your friend is there among other things.

John, we have gotten several cards from you and others have mentioned getting cards from you too.  Roberta thought she was talking to Carol Wise the other day until she mentioned that she got a card  from you with a picture which reminded you of their home - (castle) and we told her it was Georgialia Hannah.  She came out to the car to see Mary Va after one of our trips to the doctor and Jim Wise that she remembers the first time she ever came to New Vienna - April 3, 1977, I believe as we had gone to the Golden Lamb for our anniversary celebration and then Dad rushed home for a special meeting with our future minister.  Dad invited them home for supper and I never had so little in the house to fix so quickly!!

Roberta has been going over every morning to stay with Mary Va. during the day while I come home after being there all night, do a few things at home and perhaps take a nap and then go back for another 15 hours or so.

It is now TUESDAY AFTERNOON and evidently Dad had other things on his mind last night and wasn't about -- Dad is now reading this for the first time.  After getting back from the hospital yesterday evening I went down to Wells for a few minutes and the next thing you know it is 11 P.M. which is more than bed time if I expect to have any ZIP the next morning.  In the rubber and die cast areas we have been working two 12 hour shifts to build up stock as we are going to do some rearranging in July to make it more efficient.  The first week of July is vacation time, but with the end of the fiscal year there is always plenty of work in the office to be done.

Read in the News-Journal tonight about a 60-year old man who is going to pedal a bike from Forida to Maine, plans to average better than a 100 Miles a day, so there is hope for me.  The article said earlier he had rode a bike from Florence, Oregon to Mass.  [It was just less than 10 years later that Dad (at age 63) made his cross-country bike trip from San Diego to Jacksonville FL in April-May 1989]

Our cherries are turning red and the birds are there to grab them, they are nice to mince on when working in the garden.  It is light till 9 P.M. so really have no excuse not to have a better garden.

Love,
All the Family

1969 Roberta's Letter -June 10

[Written on the back of the envelope:]  "Are you ready for this??  Well.  OF COURSE!!"

June 10, 1969
Dear Family,

Well, Two days of work down.  Only three more days till PAY day!  Ha!

Everything is fine here.  The weather is getting HOT -- and you'll never believe this but I'm coming down -- already have -- a cold!!  It's just a little old thing.  The air conditioning was on -- at the shop -- I think that helped out a little (in getting my cold).

Miller & Turner called up and told me my ring was there.  We went over and got it.  It fits me perfect!!  Can you believe it??

OH.  Yes -- thanks alot for the post card from Columbus.  I'm glad you made it that far.  Yes??

John you have a lot of mail here.  You have one letter from the Louisiana Tourist Developmental Commission -- it's medium thick.  Also a large yellow note-book size envelope from the state of Connecticut Development Commission.  Also a extra large brown envelope -- notebook size -- from the Falcon Books, Katonah, New York.

There is the usual pile of newspapers.

They got Daddy's office painted.  It looks real nice!!  But, just can't wait till they get that carpet in there.  HA! HA!

Elizabeth and Oscar, Mrs. Will. Thornburg have been here getting strawberries.  Mrs. Thornburg said she put up  5  quarts for us.  Can you believe that?  Now, can you beat that?

Saturday nite they thought someone broke into the bank.  But they found later they FORGOT to lock the door!!  Poor Mr. Brumley will never live that down!!  HA!

Vanessa is staying here now.  Sharon wore me out.  She kept me up till WAY WAY late Sunday nite!  Then Monday she said she would take the door key and came in LATER -- I told her -- NO DEAL.  I went to see Vanessa.  So now she is over here.  That is OK -- isn't it??  She can go to bed early and still sleep all day long too -- it's quite a talent.  But lunch has been ready for me -- it's been VERY GOOD -- so far.  HA!

The dog and fishes are fine and well fed.  Wiggles make enough NOISE for a dozen dogs.

Well.  I've got to get to bed -- morning comes early enough the way it is now.

Have fun.  All is fine.

Love,
Roberta

1949 Jean's Letter to HH -June 7

Tuesday
June 7, 1949
Dearest Honeybunch,

Catherine was just tucked away for the night - still in her bassinet -- with her head almost up & over the top of it -- thinking of her Daddy -- for it's been quite awhile since we have seen him.

Bob and Mrs. Cochran came down today and will be here overnight.  The upholstery on his car is wearing so he left it in East Liverpool to be fixed & they loaned him another.  He isn't feeling as well - quite uncomfortable alot of the time.  Then too he's worried about the plant.  Frank Dailey -- Rosalie's husband -- might become Salesman for the W.Va. Fire Clay Mfg. Co.  Pat Kessel is helping in the office but they used someone older  to take care of things -- Uncle Alex isn't feeling well & unable to do very much.

So many people have said that Catherine is beginning to look like her handsome father.  When she woke up Friday afternoon -- the day you left -- I thought she was a picture of you and we've been seeing more and more resemblances each day.

There's a strawberry festival up at the Church this Friday night -- they plan to have baked beans, potato salad, ham sandwiches, ice cream, coffee and believe-it-or-not strawberries.  I'm not trying to make you hungry, honestly.  It just so happens that that same night Virginia wants us to come to Pittsburgh for "The Song of Norway."  I've told her that you & I already saw it but she wants Mother to go.

I meant to tell you how much I appreciated hearing when you're so busy & it was so thoughtful of you to remember how long its been since you've been unchained [?] in one way or another.

When you move you might send your telephone number and the name of the housemother there just in case we might need to get in touch with you in a hurry.  Will Calvin be there after Thursday or will he be gong to New Vienna then/

Bob and Mrs. Cochran just left so we will begin to get some things done again.  We have ironing from way back in the beginning of the washings  -- not very much from any one wash but all collected make a sizable day's work.

Do you know I wrote down your Mother's birthday & father & mother's anniversary & am at a loss still as to which one is June 9th.  I'm sending a card but please don't mention my weakness of mind.

We had a long letter from Sarah Hinerman which Mother was reading to me while I ws nursing Catherine.  When Mother started on the part about what a darling Catherine is, she raised up and cooed and crowed so you see what a superior baby we have.

Catherine's in bed again for the night and put up quite a howl -- for her Daddy, of course.  I painted the crib today but it is so spotty the painter will have to put another coat on tomorrow.

Bob took our car to Liverpool to have it gone over -- emergency brake, left front fender fixed, etc. so will take the car they loaned Bob up & exchange it Friday on our way to Pittsburgh.

In everything we do we miss you so and anxious to have you with us again even for the few hours.  Catherine is saving her tricks & teeth for the occasion.

Thanks for the card which came in this morning's mail.  Hope to find you weight and fate in good condition.

All of our very best love, Honeybunch II, Honeybunch III & maybe Honeybunch IV

1969 Roberta's Letter -June 8

June 8, 1969
Dear Family,

Well.  It sure has been a Big day.  Church was terribly emotional.  We sang that song at the end of church -- "Bless be the tie that Binds."  All these people started crying.  It's a Good thing it only happens every few years.  HA!

At about 12:00 noon Vanessa called and wanted to know if I could come over.  Carl Stokes completely left my mind!!  Well, I went to her house.  We went to -- and you won't believe this -- Chillicothe (spelling?) We saw all these historical sights.  Yes -- US TWO.  On the way back we stopped at Rocky Fork -- Fun in the Sun -- They have a miniature golf place there.  We didn't play -- simply watched.  Then we went on to Pike Lake.  Wow!  It had been a LONG time since I was there.  People were all over.  Deep inside I wanted that swim suit of mine on!!

Next stop was Bainbridge.  There was a dental place there.  It wasn't opened though.  In Hillsboro I stopped at Aunt Mary H's place.  But of course, she wasn't at home.

It has been raining off & on all day today.  I hope you all have better weather.

OH!  Nancy told me today that she could -- NOT stay with me at night.  She had to baby-sit during the day!! I told her I had counted on HER!  Well -- Now don't worry about your little 18 year old daughter.  Sharon S. is staying tonight.  There is not one thing in the world to worry about!!  Sharon will probably stay all week.

Well -- say Hello to the Beers, Kuntzmans, Schamauns, Steels, and all our other old ministers for me.

You all better write me.  I don't write for nothing you know.

Also the Volkswagen is NOT working properly.  It still has a mind of its own.  I think I'll take it to Shell and let them try and tell me the 'thing' is fine !!  HA!

It's 8:45 (PM) and I'm about ready to go to Bed!  Sharon just told me I must be kidding.

Love,
Roberta

1979 Family Letter -June 6

Wednesday evening
June 6, 1979
Dearest Family -

This letter is late being written for a variety of reasons but hope that you will excuse them all.  The main one is that Mary Virginia hasn't felt good and we have made several trips to the doctor or health related institution in the last week.

We did go to Pittsburgh on Memorial Day - ten of us in three cars and managed to stay together very well.  The sessions started that evening and ran through Friday evening and included a program at the Civic Arena on Saturday called Jesus '79 to celebrate Pentecost in 28 cities around the country.  They had some outstanding speakers and one could choose four classes a day from about 14 different ones.  There were also a variety of speakers each evening.

Mary Virginia felt pretty good until Wednesday and from then on until now she has felt progressively worse with stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting, etc.  I got some medicine from the University (Duquesne) Health Service but it didn't seem to help so we ended up taking her to Mercy Hospital via the emergency squad.  There they tested her but released her with another prescription which she finished taking but still not feeling any better.  So yesterday we went to Hillsboro to see Dr. Paul Terrell but after waiting for 1 1/2 hours came back home as MV was so uncomfortable and he hadn't come back to the office.  She felt some better this morning but after taking a bath felt her old miserable self so got her an appointment in Wilmington with Dr. Bath (young Ed) and he really impressed both of us and we were out with a couple of prescriptions and word that they would let us know the results of blood tests tomorrow.  If she doesn't feel much better by Friday we are to go back.

Vacation Bible School started Monday and because they were short-staffed I have been acting as secretary so can go later and leave earlier than the rest.  Collection take is to go to Donnie Achor.  There were 78 children today and 25 helpers (teachers, assistants and song leaders, etc.)  The final program is to be Friday evening.

The saddest news around here is the double fatality - Leanne Burke's sister and brother were in an automobile accident Friday evening.  Her sister is Mary Virginia's age - Kathleen, and her brother is Jimmy, 11.  It happened at the corner of George Henderson's at Rt. 73 and Nordyke Road.  Leanne was rooming with Mary Virginia at the Pittsburgh Conference so we got the word through the State Patrol.  Four of them took her back home early Saturday morning so it was a sad ending to an otherwise nice week.  The driver of the car involved in which the Burkes were riding was Sharon (?) Erxleben from Sabina.  The other car involved was not too bad as the occupants were treated and released from Clinton Memorial.  Sharon was taken there and then moved to Kettering for more surgery.

It was good talking to you on the phone, Serena and glad that you arrived safely in Ft. Dodge.  Appreciated your card and letter, Catherine and your letters, Roberta.  Looking forward to having Roberta home this coming weekend.  Mailed a letter to you, John, in Pittsburgh but realized later that it lacked one cent stamp of having enough postage so do hope that you get it.  Your letter came last Saturday and we got a card from you yesterday from Wurtzburg (spelling?).  We will add a note on our comments and more later about this.  Mary Virginia had a pile of mail including a letter from Carol and heard that she called her while we were gone.  Jane Burdette from Nashville also called to get more information about the Burke tragedy and invited her to come down.

We have been enjoying fresh strawberries out of the garden and see the cherries about ready to pick.  Put out some twenty tomato plants, which the birds have been picking away on, but some will make it.

Last Week Dad went to Cincy on two days for the IBM computer school.  They made the statement that at first they sold the unit on the basis that anyone could operate it, but said they now advertise that you do need some training.

[Love to all, etc.]

1979 Family Letter -May 27

[Note: This "p.2" had been connected with a letter from June 6, but in the process of transcribing realized that everything on p.2 had happened the week prior to the letter of June 6.  Evidently the first page of this letter is missing.]

. . . . Tomorrow Mary Virginia and I are going to Pittsburgh with seven others from New Vienna for the GREATER PITTSBURGH NCHARISMATIC CONVENTION I think it is called.  We are to be at Duquesne University for almost a week.  Then I hope to bring Aunt Virginia back home with us.  There are others going from Hillsboro and Wilmington so guess they come from all over - Georgialea Hannah, Doris Martin, Carol Wise, Joanne Rankin, Leanne Burke (MV's friend), and Fay Newsom are the ones from New Vienna.

Heard that Patty Walker was in the hospital to have a couple of lumps removed - her mother postponed her trip to Spain for a week or so as her sister's husband had another heart attack so Mrs. Stegman isn't going.  Jack's sister wanted to go in her place but was afraid she wouldn't get her passport in time.  So guess Va. is going by herself.  Nancy is to meet her in Madrid.

Saw Kenny Hughes while I was visiting at Clinton Memorial Hospital.  He told me that his wife had had a 2nd little girl - Laura told me yesterday that she had had her at home while Kenny went next door to get someone to stay with the first child.  No trouble at all but went to the hospital afterwards and was charged the same as if she had been born there.

Was surprised to see Danny Custis and his wife at our church this morning - they have moved into the Custis house on Rt. 28 where he and his parents used to live.  She sounded like they would be coming back regularly.

Got about a 32-page brochure about ELDERHOSTELS which offer college courses during the summer for older people - found you had to be 60+ but found it interesting reading.  It was advertised in the library with a postcard you could send for more information.  Very reasonable and worth looking into in a couple of years - one spouse has to be 60.  Catherine and Gerry and Wendy, do you know High Country School at Cove Palisades State Park?  Also see that Iowa Central Community College at Fort Dodge has some courses available.  Most of these range from $95 to $115.

Glad to see that United Airlines are back in business, as that is what your Mother's and M.V.'s tickets call for on the 21st of June.  We will be driving to Chicago a day or so before, then meeting back there on Saturday, June 30th.  Serena, can you meet us in Chicago or I could come back to Chicago via Rockford, Ill. if that would be better for you than Chicago.  The plane reservation back to Chicago from Portland gets in around 7 P.M. and have made reservations at the Marriott Motel for Sat. and Sun (the weekend special) which is near the airport.  Then depending on the gas situation we can drive out to Iowa with Serena on Monday or whatever works out best.

Thanks for the bus schedules in and out of Madras - we still may use them especially going back to Portland for think that is an imposition to have you going that far and we won't have as much luggage then.

Monday Morning:  Everybody up and at them at 5:30.  The folks [Jean, MV and others] will have an interesting trip to Pittsburgh.  On the home scene we [Wells people] go to the computer IBM school for two days.

Love,

All the Family
