1981 Roberta's Letter -Nov.13

Friday, November 13, 1981

Dear Family,

Hi!  I finally got out last night & bought 30 stamps -- so now I have no excuse for not writing!

We -- the 4 women & Buffy & I have been here almost 10 days now & there sure has been lots of ACTION!  The 1st few days they were like little beavers -- from morning till night.  I'm thinking they all felt like they had to prove themselves out.  But now they are beginning to be more relaxed -- in fact, last night no-one wanted to cook -- so hope they haven't gone from one extreme to the other!!

Do you remember Daisy -- from the Sr. Center -- her son-in-law is putting (helping -- in fact doing most of it) up a shed for us in the back yard.  It's a 9 x 10  -- will sure be what we need -- for all of our collections -- We have both gotten spoiled w/ the garage & all, the storage space in the last 2 houses!

Marian is going up to the cabin for the weekend -- she has spent the last several weekends here working from morning to night.  Doing all sorts of stuff -- from repairing screen doors, making bulletin boards -- planting grass -- etc.

The "bubble" arrived yesterday -- it was all waxed up & looks so proud!!  Your letter & check arrived yesterday -- too -- so that was good timing.  Seems like I should have gotten the letter on Tuesday -- then the holiday slipped right in there.  Just one small pull -- I had remembered that they paid $1200 -- and it was $1500 -- but luckily enough I had the bucks to make the difference.  Sid did buy 2 new tires & got the squeak repaired -- it had a file folder of history on it -- when, what & all work he did on it -- as far as greasing it -- etc.  Marilyn only used it for about 6 weeks -- before she went into the hospital.  She was so proud of the car.  I know it would make her happy to see it used to people's enjoyment.

I didn't want a bunch of hippies to get -- to sleep in -- or haul loud music instruments around!   It is a good solid investment -- a wise choice!!  I will be thinking about how to get it to Grandma -- but in the meantime it allows Marian to have "wheels" -- the truck.  I'm wondering if we will ever get the Dodge Swinger -- from the Wensel Estate.  They don't want to sell the car till the house sells -- and I know how slow -- Real Estate is going now days!

We do have maybe a BITE on the house -- Dorothy Stubbs sister & brother-in-law -- they are coming out 2 days before Thanksgiving to look at it.  They are selling their house back in Kansas -- & from what Dorothy has told them they really like the sounds of the house -- i.e Rock Yard, lots of storage, etc.  They have always lived w/ 1 Bath -- so that's no problem w/ them.  There hasn't been a house sold in Dreamland [?] Villa for 2 months!  Lots of them up for sale!

I really have some news -- one of the ladies -- HELEN -- who lives next door -- in Sr. Village - had a BIRD when she moved in.  Buffy came over on Friday to live -- and guess what happened Monday AM -- Buffy got the cage knocked over & ATE THE BIRD!!  Helen was upset -- tho not mad at either me or the dear dog!  I got her a new BIRD & needless to say going to great pains to keep Buff & Petey separate!!  Buffy has been sick to his stomach since then -- so Marion says to get him to the Vet today!

Wonder if Mary Va & Mie Young would be interested in coming out for the holidays --

Must Go ---

Much Love,
Roberta

The bubble runs great -- I'm going to enjoy using it.

1981 Family Letter -July 26

Sunday evening --
July 26, 1981
Dearest Family --

This is the quietest Sunday we have had for some time or foresee in the next few weeks.  Dad and Mie Young are fixing their lunches for tomorrow and after falling asleep watching TV where they were discussing the future of Social Security I decided I better do something a little more productive.  We (Dad and I) took the minister over to Wilmington this afternoon to meet some of the church's senior citizens.  We went to see Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Howard Penn, Dorothy Bernard, Kizzie Custis and Mrs. Mae Peele.  Dad and I also called on Mrs. McCoy and a couple of others at Extended Care (or Wilmington Health Center as they are now called).

Mary Virginia played for the Rankins when they sang at Lees Creek United Church of Christ.  Mie Young took her place playing the piano between Sunday School and Church.  MV has dropped out of one singing group so isn't quite as involved as she had been.  They would be breaking up soon with two entering college and guess there was a difference of opinion about what outfit the girls would wear.  The boys had gotten shirts alike but the girls were disagreeing over type and money to be invested in their garb.  They were to sing at the county fair and also the state fair but don't know whether the others will continue or not -- without any altos.

Going backwards, we invited the Marvin Beams to go to dinner and the play at Wilmington College.  They were presenting "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" which is the best thing they did this summer.  They had a dinner theater there at Pyle Center but Madge Ann thought it was a bit too much walking for Marvin so we went to the Wine Shop instead.  Dad and I had steaks -- very good and Marvin had a sandwich and MA a salad -- Dad and I also had tomato-zucchini soup which was real good.  MV and MY met us at the theater and sat with us there.  When we took the Beams home afterwards Davis and his girlfriend were swimming in their pool -- a really beautiful one situated right behind their house -- sunken with lights -- measuring about 12 x 30 feet surrounded by trees on two sides -- driveway and house on the others.  His girl is buyer in the junior department of Rikes but is taking off next (this) week to help her father show Angus cattle at the Fayette County Fair.  Bruce works nights -- driving to Cincinnati to work on the Southern RailRoad.  They asked about all of you.  Marvin gets around real well on his artificial leg -- and doesn't seem to keep him from doing many things.  His hair is beginning to come back in after his chemotherapy treatments.  Dad had seen him and didn't recognize him minus hair and eyebrows.  There must have been eight vehicles parked in their back yard -- it was a real test of maneuverability to get in and out of their drive.

Speaking of maneuverability -- Mie Young passed her driver's test Friday with flying colors.  So many had told her of their failures that she was prepared for the worst but had a most kind patrolman.  They had set up posts in the parking area near the old Bob and Carl's near where Roberta used to live (formerly Eavey's) so it is much roomier than in the driveway around the State Patrol Barracks.

Wednesday night we went to La Comedia to see "Grease" as the drill team was selling tickets at reduced prices.  It was good but I was too tired to enjoy it as much as I might have.  The girls were able to keep awake better than I and they had been working ten hour days from Monday on and had to be at work at 7AM the next morning.  At least they had Friday off to recuperate.

Thursday Dad went to a State Experimental Farm near Ripley on the river as it was the Annual Commissioner's Day as guests of the Ag. Dept.  We sold the Mercury with 106M miles and have a "burnt orange Chevette" which makes our garage seem twice the size.  Looks like we are going to get 30+ MPG.

I liked the inside of the old Mercury but the outside was rusting out and new tires were needed.  Dad sold it to a young fellow who is going to Wilmington College who lives behind Grandma in Hutchins old house (formerly Phillips).  We bought the new one down at Blanchester Oil where we had gotten the other Chevrolet.  It is an automatic - hatchback.

While we were looking down there I also ordered some meat (¼ front) from Wilsons Locker just across the street so picked up the new car and the meat the same morning.  Also did a little shopping there in Blanchester.  I had ridden down with Tom and Flo Brumley -- she works part time in the new Hallmark store which took the place of the 5&10¢ store on the corner of the main intersection of town.  It is a real nice store -- far roomier than the two in Wilmington that are also owned by the Brandehoffs.  I looked around in it and then also went to see the Clinton County Bank Blanchester Branch which is where Tom is.  He had someone show me all around there so I literally spent the morning in Blanchester.  Also found out that Deborah's son is ten years old -- they were both there at the house when Dad took me out to get the ride.  I asked Deborah where she is working and she told me Washington Court House -- turned out she is working in one of Lee's business enterprises -- Burke Monument Co.  That must be a real switch after being a Playboy Bunny in Cincinnati.  Several years ago she was a runner-up in one of the beauty contests sponsored by Playboy.  She is very attractive.  Don't know when the wedding is to be but they said that Mike, her son would be going to 5th grade in Sabina.  She had just gotten her engagement ring the night before.  Just five years ago we were in Greece with them on the Woman's Club's trip.

We leave Sunday for Cincinnati to attend the Ohio Commissioner's meeting which lasts through Wednesday.  Friday we are due in New Orleans (that is Aug. 7th) and MV and MY are planning to go with us there.

Dad had his turn of teaching Sunday School this morning -- our class is having a quick three month review of the entire old testament.  Always wish that I had learned more about the Bible on the earlier studies.

The New Vienna Sr. Citizens met Saturday in their new home -- Grandma said she was too busy to go, which was probably good as they had around 125 -- record turn out and understand that there was not room to move around.

In our Square Dance Group we were good friends with this couple from Blanchester and lo and behold they have accepted an assignment with the Peace Corps and are now in the Philippines.  He had worked with the Blanchester Water System and am sure they would be a BIG asset where ever they went.  Anyway, it took us by surprise when people our age take off like that.

Picked several tomatoes out of the garden and will soon have some cabbage to eat.  The raspberries are ripening again for their second round.  We have been enjoying the fresh peaches.

Glad that Roberta is on the mend from her teeth problems.  Always think of the old adage that we never appreciate good health until we have lost it.  (temporarily)

The old building to the east of Marathon gas station is now a big heap -- the picture even made the front page of the Wilmington News Journal last week.  They were lucky as they pulled the building down and they kept it pretty much within the lot which is much better than hitting either the station or the house on each side.

Space is running out and we do think of you all often and always glad to hear from you -- directly and indirectly.  Wish we could all get together when the Horton clan is meeting in Lancaster -- at least part of them.  Joe I suppose arrived or will soon be in NYC.

[Love, etc.]

1981 Burnt Orange Chevette -July 21

Can't say that I remember ever seeing this car -- but I didn't get to New Vienna very frequently in the 1980's.

1990 MV's Letter -Sep.25

 9-25-90

Dear Mom & Dad --

Welcome Back!  Not knowing exactly when you'll arrive, I hope this letter arrives there before you.  Hope you had a good trip and enjoyed Elderhostel once again.  I heard an ad on Public Radio the other day that there would be an informational meeting on Elderhostel in Lexington . . . .

Well, the interview in Somerset went pretty well last week.  I was the 4th of 5 to be interviewed (the 5th interviewed 9-23).  The Staff-Parish Committee will be meeting this coming Sunday to make the decision.  It was the first interview I had been to where they videotaped it!  There were 2 members who were out of town for some of the interviews, so supposedly everyone gets an equal chance that way.  It will be nice to know one way or the other.

My job at Shakertown is going well.  Next week I will work on Monday also to fill in for the other girl who sings.  It is an easy job; at 11, 1, 2, 3, 4 I sing and do a 10 minute presentation on Shaker worship.  The rest of the day (9:30-6:00) I just have to greet visitors who wander in.  There is a large closet with a window off the side of the meeting room where I can sit and do whatever.  Because the meeting room is large, it's easy to hear the big door open (it echoes) when someone does come in.

Friday we are going to Georgia with Cathy & Jay (our "boarder" & fiance) as they have some social events to attend.  We will stay in Macon Friday night and then Saturday go on down to Moultrie for a shower & a dinner party in their honor.  We should be home Sunday evening.

The team meetings have been a lot of fun; with the two that were on Sunday, I was exhausted having worked 6 days then to drive to Wilmington & back seemed longer than usual.  Unless something changes, I am sure this will be the last time I do a team at home.  It is simply too draining physically with 5 hours on the road.

Don is enjoying his classes, especially preaching.  He doesn't complain about the reading he has to do for it!  He's also taking U.M. Theology, Servant as Teacher and  ?  (I can't remember the other).  It doesn't seem possible that Christmas is only 3 months away!  We are talking about flying to Texas for the holidays, but not knowing whether we'll be in Somerset or   ?   we won't be making plans for another couple weeks at least.

Don said Serena called last night while I was at work and talked for about 45 minutes.  We haven't heard a thing from J.B. or the Morgans.  Roberta called a couple weeks ago to see if she could send me panty hose.  A few days later a big box (probably 50-75 prs of hose) arrived -- all Q's, which I will pass on to Serena.

We did go out to lunch with the Hortons & Grandma after doing the service in New Vienna.  That van is terrible on gas mileage.  I couldn't believe how quickly it went.  I suppose the chair-lift is so heavy that it really cuts down on the mileage.

Did I tell you I got elected to the Board of Directors for Lexington Emmaus?  My first board meeting (end of Aug) lasted 4 hours!  I thought it would never be over.  I was secretly thankful when I had to work last night so I didn't have to go.  My responsibilities are Music & Entertainment:  getting music for gatherings, sponsors hour, Candlelight, Closing & Entertainment for Saturday Night Dinner during the Walks.  I'm trying to get a few months ahead on music for the gatherings -- This fall we had to move our walks from the Methodist Home in Versailles.  The building we had been using was closed by the Fire Marshall.  That means the cost will now be approximately $80 in order to have it anywhere else.  There are no local churches that have facilities to accommodate a walk.

We took the Honda in for the 30,000 mile check up a couple weeks ago -- we did not anticipate the extra work on the brakes -- they had been squeaking badly.  Another mechanic had told me that it was caused by a glaze on the rotors which often happens on Hondas.  We're trying to get a duplicate title for Don's car from Oklahoma -- somewhere in the move to Kentucky the original was lost.  🙁 Oklahoma wants an arm & a leg for a duplicate, but if we want to sell it or get plates, we will have to pay up.  I can't believe anyone could lose something so important.

Hope you found the tape of the worship service on the table.  We accidentally left the remainder of the milk and a piece of chicken in the fridge.  I'm sure both are spoiled by now.

With the cooler weather, it is taking ingenuity to stay warm at Shakertown.  They haven't turned on the furnace and my costume is very light weight.  On the bottom I wear long johns & 2 pairs of socks but with the round neckline, even a t-shirt or anything shows.  I've been trying to think of some way to keep the top warm.  I bring my lunch, as they have a microwave and a fridge available.  We are allowed to eat at the "Summer Kitchen" (Sandwich Shop) but the prices are exorbitant!

You all are welcome to come visit anytime.  I sing on Tuesdays and Thursdays; (and) the ladies that work here are very nice.  The only part I don't like is this costume we have to wear.  Call when you get home.  Welcome Back!

Love,

M.V. and Don

1979 Family Letter -Sep.3

Monday - Labor Day
September 3, 1979

Dearest Roberta, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy,

Things are gradually getting back to normal but we do miss all of you for it was nice having you at home - even briefly.  John and Carol came Saturday afternoon and stayed til about 2:30 this afternoon.  And the Hortons left yesterday.

We had them all up Saturday evening for supper and then got to see John's pictures he took in Europe.  The wedding pictures which we took down to the NV Pharmacy to be developed Wednesday were back so enjoyed seeing those too and picked out some that thought you would enjoy having copies of and will send them when we get them.  John took them up to Newark to have prints made there.  Since they will be gone for a week don't expect to get them too soon but hope to have them soon after that.

Sunday after Sunday School and church we went to the Golden Lamb to have dinner.  It was good but too much to eat as both appetizer and dessert are included and none of us needed that dessert at all but everything was good.  Dad and Grandma went on down to Cincinnati to take Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill to the airport only to find that their flight had been cancelled a half hour before due to the hurricane DAVID.  They were given $13 to have dinner (but weren't too hungry for some reason) and sent to the Howard Johnson motel nearby.  Dad talked to them alter and they seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Aunt Mary had called Melissa Holbrook      ?      who lives in Madeira and has two little boys.  She had hoped to have time to call her so things worked out for that.

We took Mary Virginia over to Sabina this morning as the band was marching in the Labor Day parade there.  We backtracked to Debbie Haines' house where we left her and her things as Debbie was going to take her to the parade and then back home for some lunch.  Grandma went with us and stayed for lunch.  Had our own corn on the cob and tomatoes as well as some turkey patties we had gotten at Bernards.  John and Carol were invited to another cookout this evening so they didn't stay too long after we ate.  They dis take some apples, tomatoes, and green beans as well as cabbage & got some of Grandma's grapes.  They didn't want too much as they will be leaving Thursday for their honeymoon.  Hope hurricane or storm Frederick doesn't get too intense to spoil their trip.

John and Carol said they really enjoyed the go-getters Class as they had  just started a new series on the Family lead by the minister so glad they had something of substance.

We washed both the Mercury and the Chev this afternoon and they both look alot nicer.  The Chev has gotten quite a bit of tar on the sides.  Dad parked the Dodge Dart down in Grandma's garage until we see who needs it or and / if we sell or get ride of the Mercury.  At least it is still insured and is usable.  Last year we were in need of another car often and this year we have three.

Serena told me to tell you, Roberta, that Allen Haines asked about you.  He is going to go to Ohio University this fall and get or work on his masters in Photography.  I hardly knew him under so much beard and all.

Have a pile of things to go back to you that we found after you left, Catherine.  Nothing of great importance but did find Wendy's light blue shirt with the kitten on it and a couple of little things she had left plus the blue washcloth.  Do hope that the navy purse of Wend's shows up - hopefully the motel in Kent will know something about it and send it back.

Had our own corn for the first time today - one of my farmer friends told me that I needed some nitrogen additive for  a better crop.  Saturday afternoon hauled in a pick up load of manure from a friend's farm and put that around our rhubarb, asparagus and berry patches - so hopefully they will do better in 1980.  Hardly seems possible that this year is ⅔ gone.  Grandma had a card from Joe Horton from Japan - he is there for two weeks - visiting a friend "Tak", who he knew at UC.  Joe is due in the states in October.  Still have had no work as to the Hortons getting to LW today.  Uncle Bill says he is going to retire the end of this year.

[Love, etc.]

1969 Roberta's Letter -July 20

July 20, 1969
Dear Family,

It's now Sunday night and all we've heard all day is about the men on the moon.

Grandma and I ate out at Duff's for lunch.  It was very good.

We went up to N.C.R. again Friday.  We filled out four pages of questions.  They sure are nosy!

Well, I thought I had the V.W. horn fixed.  But no -- it went and had another horn FIT!  As I guess Grandma told you -- I drove up to the V.W. place in Xenia for a "horn relay."  Um -- I was told that VW's don't have horn relays!!  They said there was either 1) a short in the wires or 2) the part(s) might be corroded.  They said to bring it up . . . .

All the Lynd "kids" are home.  It sue is a mess up there.  All these grand-children running all around!!

It has been HOT lately.  Today it cooled off.  It has rained & rained all day long.

I'll see you all soon.  Seems its' too late to send this even to your address in Santa Fe.

Love,
Roberta

1979 Family Letter -June 6

Wednesday evening
June 6, 1979
Dearest Family -

This letter is late being written for a variety of reasons but hope that you will excuse them all.  The main one is that Mary Virginia hasn't felt good and we have made several trips to the doctor or health related institution in the last week.

We did go to Pittsburgh on Memorial Day - ten of us in three cars and managed to stay together very well.  The sessions started that evening and ran through Friday evening and included a program at the Civic Arena on Saturday called Jesus '79 to celebrate Pentecost in 28 cities around the country.  They had some outstanding speakers and one could choose four classes a day from about 14 different ones.  There were also a variety of speakers each evening.

Mary Virginia felt pretty good until Wednesday and from then on until now she has felt progressively worse with stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting, etc.  I got some medicine from the University (Duquesne) Health Service but it didn't seem to help so we ended up taking her to Mercy Hospital via the emergency squad.  There they tested her but released her with another prescription which she finished taking but still not feeling any better.  So yesterday we went to Hillsboro to see Dr. Paul Terrell but after waiting for 1 1/2 hours came back home as MV was so uncomfortable and he hadn't come back to the office.  She felt some better this morning but after taking a bath felt her old miserable self so got her an appointment in Wilmington with Dr. Bath (young Ed) and he really impressed both of us and we were out with a couple of prescriptions and word that they would let us know the results of blood tests tomorrow.  If she doesn't feel much better by Friday we are to go back.

Vacation Bible School started Monday and because they were short-staffed I have been acting as secretary so can go later and leave earlier than the rest.  Collection take is to go to Donnie Achor.  There were 78 children today and 25 helpers (teachers, assistants and song leaders, etc.)  The final program is to be Friday evening.

The saddest news around here is the double fatality - Leanne Burke's sister and brother were in an automobile accident Friday evening.  Her sister is Mary Virginia's age - Kathleen, and her brother is Jimmy, 11.  It happened at the corner of George Henderson's at Rt. 73 and Nordyke Road.  Leanne was rooming with Mary Virginia at the Pittsburgh Conference so we got the word through the State Patrol.  Four of them took her back home early Saturday morning so it was a sad ending to an otherwise nice week.  The driver of the car involved in which the Burkes were riding was Sharon (?) Erxleben from Sabina.  The other car involved was not too bad as the occupants were treated and released from Clinton Memorial.  Sharon was taken there and then moved to Kettering for more surgery.

It was good talking to you on the phone, Serena and glad that you arrived safely in Ft. Dodge.  Appreciated your card and letter, Catherine and your letters, Roberta.  Looking forward to having Roberta home this coming weekend.  Mailed a letter to you, John, in Pittsburgh but realized later that it lacked one cent stamp of having enough postage so do hope that you get it.  Your letter came last Saturday and we got a card from you yesterday from Wurtzburg (spelling?).  We will add a note on our comments and more later about this.  Mary Virginia had a pile of mail including a letter from Carol and heard that she called her while we were gone.  Jane Burdette from Nashville also called to get more information about the Burke tragedy and invited her to come down.

We have been enjoying fresh strawberries out of the garden and see the cherries about ready to pick.  Put out some twenty tomato plants, which the birds have been picking away on, but some will make it.

Last Week Dad went to Cincy on two days for the IBM computer school.  They made the statement that at first they sold the unit on the basis that anyone could operate it, but said they now advertise that you do need some training.

[Love to all, etc.]

1978 Family Letter -July 9

Sunday evening –
July 9, 1978
Dearest Family –

I am sitting here typing in the patio as we moved the typewriter here to be a little cooler.  The weather was just too warm to try use the dining room this evening.  At least I can see a breeze blowing the leaves of the trees.  Mary Virginia has gone to Villars Chapel to hear some singing group with the Rankins.  Dad and I are talking about going for a bicycle ride.  We just finished supper – the last of some banana yogurt that we made when the Hortons were here (which was plenty soupy then for we waited too long for it to season but refreezing it seemed to help it).  Also had some honeydew melon – not as ripe and good as the previous one (it was a real buy for 39¢ and delicious).

We were glad to hear from all of you this past week – another record !!  It was good talking to Catherine and also getting the letter.  Before I forget I'd better say now that don't give up hope if you call and don't find anyone at home next Thursday evening as Dad is to work at the ball park and Mary Virginia and I usually end up over there and sometimes helping there too. We were happy to hear that Wendy had acquired her second tooth without too much difficulty and glad to hear that she adapts so well to camping life.

Really glad that you made the decision to stay in New Jersey and not rush back to Arizona, Roberta.  Mary Virginia really held her breath for if you had gone back that would have left her wondering what to do the middle of July.  She is happy to get to see Marion and I.T. since their visits coincide.  Too bad that you will have to make so many trips to the airports – MV is also wondering if you will have room for her in their old room since it is so small and you already have a roommate.

Glad that we were finally able to find you at home, Serena, and hope that things work out for you to get a fellowship or possibly a chance to go to Denver yet.  You must really have an IN with UMKC if you are staying at the home of the head of the program there.  We do hope that you will plan to come home between summer school and fall semester or quarter if you aren't doing else.

Your letters are spaced wide apart, John, but glad to hear of you thru Roberta's.  Sound like those new t-shirts are going well as well as other things in the canteen.  Too bad you weren't reached sooner by Bell's office or whoever it was that wanted a youth coordinator but wonder how you would find much time for all you do now.

We went down to Rocky Fork Restaurant for lunch today as Grandma had been wanting to go – had planned to go while the Hortons were here but it didn't work out.  They now have a buffet available on weekends which they called a smorgasbord but though the view is wonderful we didn't find the food nor the service too good not to elaborate but servings generous!!   Dr. Hull's Fun in the Sun was not open but the miniature golf available.  I don't know whether it is closed permanently or what for this is certainly the season and Sunday would be one of the best days to be open.

Had a little more difficulty with the Mercury Friday when Wilma, MV and I went to Washington Court House to do a little shopping.  We scraped the bottom of the gas tank and it began to leak profusely and so ended up with us having to get it replaced.  In the meantime the fire department had to hose the streets and the service station.  Guess I was lucky no one was around throwing matches or cigarettes or it would have followed me fast!!  As Dad keeps saying the next thing to go is the exhaust system but so far that is about the only original fixtures under the body and hood.

Monday was quite a day too for Duffie Doo Silver Streak unbeknownst to me rode to Wilmington and refused to come home.  I hated it especially for Roberta's sake for know how unhappy she will be on her next visit if that little furry thing isn't on hand to greet her.  Mary Virginia took it very well – it saved solving some questions of what to do about her while we are away but I am still having dreams of her and what may have happened to him (it).Patty Walker Ryan had a little girl just a little over a week after Jacalyn's wedding day so all came out okay.  Just noticed it in yesterday's paper so hope she got along okay.  They have named her Shellie Jo to accompany Shannon Dee.  If Jim was at the wedding we didn't know it for he is unknown to us but doubt if he made it.  Nancy sounded as if she has about given up going to Europe.

Tuesday didn't start off too sunny but we were on our way around 8AM and met Bob Gooding at the Canoe Livery (Morgan's) where we took their bus to the Caesar Creek area.  There Beverly was waiting with their canoe and we were soon on our way.  It was good that it was cloudy for it wasn't too hot.  The sun did come out while we were having a picnic lunch at the roadside park near the I-75 bridge.  We thought the tables would all be taken but they had closed the road dow to it because of a mud slide across the road.  Darlene Linkhart went with Mary Virginia.  Bob had to leave for Salt Lake City the next day for a couple of days so we separated after the canoeing.  Darlene had never been to Fort Ancient since she was real little so stopped to see the view there and the museum which really fascinated her.  There are several competitors for the Morgans now so had no trouble getting a canoe but had made reservations earlier.

Wednesday night was Lions Club and Dad was on the committee, had a basic menu of roast beef, baked potatoes, succotash, salads and pistachio pudding.  For the thirty people the cost for the four of us averaged about $7.00 each.  For the program we had a fellow from near Hillsboro who had been to Brazil and who was excited enough about it that he even wanted to buy land down there.  He is really sold on it as a place for the future.

Clyde Irwin brought a big mess of green beans last Saturday – ours will be ready in a few days.  We should be having tomatoes in a couple more weeks.  We should have an earlier garden next year for plan to get some more fertilizer before the next season.

The Wolfroms (all except little Jeannie) are leading a canoe trip in Canada.  The group is leaving tomorrow morning – Rev. Wise, Keith Rittenhouse and David Thornburg are among those going.  They are to be gone ten days.  If Dad didn't already have plans made to be gone he might have been influenced to have gone with them.

We have not told anyone around here about our upcoming trip but plan to leave Cincinnati Monday evening, July 17th.  Mary Virginia will be going that same afternoon to Hudson Guild to stay until we go over the first week of August.  We are due back I believe Tuesday, July 25th so hope to hear from all of you before we go and also have a letter when we get back ???  Grandma is planning on going to New Jersey with us about Aug. 3rd and if all goes well we will be at the farm that evening and then go to New York a couple of days later – more details later.  She (G'ma) will stay at the farm while we are at the Bar Meeting but hope that Roberta, and John may get to come into New York while we are there.  What are your chances of going with us, Serena, or are you interested?  Think Mary Virginia is coming to New York for some of the time.

Your trip into Oregon and possibly Washington sounds interesting, Catherine and Gerry and hope you get some possible prospects through the International Harvester dealers.  We would certainly love to see all of you and wish that we might all be together for a reunion.  I just finished reading a book written by Laura Hughes' sister about their family – their move to Ohio from Kentucky and the hardships they faced during the early 1920's and 30's.  Pictures of Mrs. Hughes as a little girl look so much like Weegie as I remember her growing up.

We do want to get this into the mail so that Catherine gets if before she leaves Oregon (Hillsboro) where she will be visiting her Kalamazoo classmate Sue . . . can't recall her name now and don't have the letter too handy.

We shall be thinking of all of you and always look forward to hearing from you.  Also glad to hear that Rob is enjoying Hudson Guild and vice versa.

With much love to you all and a special kiss for Wendy

1978 Roberta's letter to John -May 10

May 10, 1978
Hi, John!

Seems like alot is happening and I want to keep you up on things!!!  Sure wish we had the use of a watts line more often!!!

We are rally (met to say really) getting the truck fixed up.  Bought some carpet yesterday and that is scheduled to go in the weekend.  Got the boot put it . . . . which involves the window of the truck and the window of the shell camper taken out . . . then they take and put in a leather connection.  It's neat!!!  Wish you were here to see it all!!!

Marion goes in the hospital tomorrow.  Last night she had the last visit with the Dr. before going.  It's a shame but she doesn't much care for the Dr. . . . which doesn't make for the best situation.  Her sister is coming in tomorrow and stay for about 10 days.  Marion knows that you know so I strongly encourage you to write her a note . . . she needs to hear from people.  There are so many complications that could set in with the surgery . . . I'll keep you posted as to what she is doing.

John, would Ray be willing to pay $100 for the radio?  Whatever he pays please subtract it from the money I owe you.  How big of a hurry are you in for the money???  I'd be glad to have Dad pay you, then I could pay Dad back.  Also were you able to sell the spare tire????  Remember us selling the tire in Netcong?  We really got a good deal.  Whatever you got for it, how about subtracting it from what I owe you???

Work is going about the same.  I want to quit, but then I'm afraid I would have a really hard time in finding another job, unless I take one where again I'll be low man (person) on the totem pole.

I understand that the family is going to give you the BIG WHITE CAR for the summer.  I'm sorry that things worked out the way they did and you are without a car.  You know I didn't plan it that way.  Poor Serena got the worse end of the deal.

Keep me posted as to what is happening with you.  I'm enclosing a prayer you might like.  Let me know what you think about it.

Love!
Berta

1978 Roberta's letter to MV -May 9

May 9, 1978

Dear Mary Virginia,

HI!  It's 7:00 a.m., just got to work and thought I would at least start a letter your way.  How many other people write you at 7:00 in the morning?????

Thanks alot for your letter . . . . . it is always good to hear from you.  Yesterday's letter was especially long and good!!!  You sound like you are really doing good in your swimming lessons.  You should plan on coming out here this summer and putting your lessons to use.  Did I tell you that the Mandes are having a swimming pool put in???  It's not all that big, but it takes up the whole back yard.  It's already been dug, and is suppose to be poured or whatever today.  I keep telling them that my doctor says I need to be in a private pool three times a week.  Their boys are really excited about having the pool.  Last week sometime was Muryl's birthday, and we finally celebrated yesterday by having a mud pie.  That was the first mud pie we have had since your birthday . . . golly that seems like a long time ago.

We really had a busy weekend.  There were alot of things that Marion wanted to get done before she goes in the hospital.  Part of which is helping me decide about what all I want to do with the truck.  In Grandma's note I mention how we came about getting the shell on the back, now we are trying to find remnant carpet for the bed of the truck.  Do the Morgans have carpet in theirs???  I've seen some really nice jobs done.  For sleeping in it, or just for sitting the carpet would really be nice.

As of this letter, you all now officially know of Marion having cancer, and her going in the hospital this Thursday.  Now you are more than welcome to call or write her.  The address of the hospital is 1400 S. Dobson Road, Mesa, 85202.  She will be in there for five days or so . . . . depending on how she gets along.  The doctor will be doing alot of exploring once she is opened up.  Her surgery is for Friday, and after that I'll be able to tell you all more.  DO NOT LET ON THAT YOU KNEW AHEAD OF THIS ABOUT IT . . . ok???  Thanks!!!

Dorothy had us over for cake and homemade ice cream this last Sunday.  It was to celebrate my birthday, she wanted to do it early so that Marion could enjoy it too.  We go over there quite a bit . . .maybe once a week or so . . . or they come over to visit us.  Usually everytday I eat lunch with Dorothy now.  Sometimes we eat in the school cafeteria or sometimes we bring lunch and then go to Pioneer park to eat.  Or sometimes just go to McDonalds or Jack-in-the-box.  If we eat in the school cafeteria it costs 75¢ – for a full meal, or a big chef salad.

Starting the end of this week – or probably last week, I'm going to start taking off for 1.5 to 2 hours for lunch, then work just a little later.  That way I can visit Marion in the middle of the day.  Either that or might just skip lunch and them come home earlier.  It won't be all that serious until her sister leaves.

I've been thinking that maybe you would be able to come out this summer and then drive back with me.  It would be cheap . . . we could sleep in the back of the truck.  Marion bought a round-trip ticket from here to Denver, even though she would only be able to use it going from here to there.  The one-way ticket cost $77 and the round-trip cost $92.  I talked her into the two-way telling her she could try to sell it in Denver and make $40 or so by selling it.  I need to figure up how much it would cost for you to fly on your own to Denver, and then pick up there being Marion Magill.  There are alot of possibilities.  In a way it would be alot easier if she could sell her ticket, or maybe you would like to come out on the bus.  They have a special price for something like $59!!!  Check it out on your end . . .ok?

I'm trying to let my finger nails grow long.  Marion will pay me $1 for each nail I let grow.  So far I haven't made any money!!!

WRITE!

Love,
Berta

1978 Roberta's letter to GHU -May 8

May 8, 1978
Dear Grandma,

They make these here at the school . . . the students in the printing department.  Usually they are used when you want to write a friendly note to someone in the schools.

Thanks for your letter.  Seems I've done little writing today . . . . or met to say lately.   Yes, it was a shame about the accident.  Hope Serena is doing fine by now.  You would really like the truck.  Yesterday we put in the 2nd tank of gas, so we were able to figure up our gas as for miles per gallon.  Was just under 25 miles per gallon, and that should get better as time goes by.  There seems to be a short in the cab light – inside – only works when the passenger's door is open so taking it in tonight for them to fix.  The warranty is good for 12 months or 12,000 miles.  I've got a feeling that the 12,000 will come first.

Saturday we spent the morning looking at shells to go over the bed of the truck.  That way I could use it for sleeping in, or for carrying stuff back there and it won't get wet.  The new ones were really expensive . . . . like close to $500 for the one I wanted.  It turned out that Marion had mentioned it to her friend Sally, who mentioned it to her brother . . . who just so happened to have one he wanted to sell, it fit just fine . . . which is amazing because they come in all shapes and sizes.  It has a little orange trim, which is an all-right contrast with the yellow.  He wanted $200 for it, and helped us put it on.  I had to turn my head when he drilled the holes on the side for it.  It is in excellent shape, he had had it for two years, but didn't use it all that much.  I think I'll just keep it on all the time.  Want to get carpet inside it, but will have to take time on getting it fixed up.  Unless I just have a week to come home, I know I'll drive home in it.

I didn't pass the test for the probation job I wanted.  You had to have a 75 to pass and I got 73!!!!  I'm glad I did that well – if I had done worse, I would have really felt bad, not if I take it over again I know I'd do much better.

I'm still wanting another job.  I've applied for several jobs, and keep reading the papers.  Know that something will turn up.  I just wish it would come up soon!!!!

Less and less people here now.  The tourists have all headed home, and with this heat, I sure don't blame them.  I've got a feeling I'm going to spend alot of time this summer in the pool.  Have met alot of people there . . . none my age, either children, or parents of . . . .

Love,
             Berta

1978 Roberta's Letter to John -May 5

May 5, 1978
Dear John,

Seem to have some time on my hands so wanted to get a quick note started to you.  Don't know what or how much you have heard from the folks lately, but I have lots of news to tell!!!

But first off . . . . . thanks so much for your letter.  I always enjoy hearing from you, but this letter was especially great . . . you sound so happy and for that I am glad.  What book are you studying in the Bible????  Marion and I have been reading a type of devotional book, called the Pain of being Human. It's fantastic . . . . . well written, and really makes you . . . or gives you the challenge to think.  It's by a Catholic Priest, he also has alot of other books out -- the joy of being human . . . . etc.

What have you heard from Mr. Ream.  He is really a burger not to have written you to let you know what is happening.  We wrote him a nice letter, then never heard back from him.  If he bad feelings, is too bad.  I'm glad that Rob will be there too this summer.  I want to have complete details of what all is happening . . .

We had a busy weekend this last weekend.  Saturday we were out by 6:15 a.m. looking at trucks.  I had decided I wanted a small truck, like a Datsun or Toyota.  I like to look while there are no salesman around, while it is cool.  After looking till 10:00 we came back, rested awhile, then went back out.  This time I left my pocketbook at home.  And

  • Hi there john sign maryann sandoval I have heard alot about you your sister roberta is very proud of so I must go know nice meeting you  bye maryann sandoval a friend/....
then we went back out to the Datsun place and I bought a new 1978 bright yellow short bed truck.  It was a demo with some 1,600 miles on it.  It has a bumper, and side molding.  Also has an AM radio, but in time I want to put the radio that is in the Buick in it.  Did we tell you that we put this really neat Peinner radio AM/FM, 8-track in the Buick.  Really good sound.  There is the best FM station here.  It plays the best music.

Anyway, I really like the truck, I had wanted one when I got the Granada, but then I knew that I wanted one that I could take Grandma around in.  This summer, some time I want to get a basic shell to go over it, so we can go camping up in the mountains . . . the cold . . . or should I say the cool region.  I'm anxious to see what kind of gas mileage I'll get with it.

The Buick has really had it.  I don't know whether I should sell it – get nothing out of it – or go ahead and get it licensed.  Seems that there is very few times that we need two cars.  Marion still drops me off on there way to work, and picks me up in the afternoon.

Marion is to go in the hospital this coming Thursday, a week from today.  It will be a hard time for her, but then it will be great when it is all over.  I'm very anxious – as she is – to find out what the doctor finds when he operates.  Good thing we didn't plan to go to the farm this summer.  The doctor says she will be in the hospital for 1 week, then will be about 7-8 weeks before she feels like herself again.  She knows that you know, so if you want to write her, or send a card, feel welcome.  I know she would like to hear from you.

I've been busy applying for jobs, taking tests, etc.  Yesterday I went out to Mesa Lutheran Hospital. They have a social service worker job open.  While I was there they told me about a job that they aren't even advertising . . . it's one for Public Relations Director.  It pays good.  plus it sounds like a really interesting job.  There are rumors flying around here that I wan to get another job, so its kind of weird working under it all.  I am really on the look-out . . . . . but not for typing type jobs!!!

Love,
Berta

Keep me posted as to what is happening w/you ––
You'll like the truck!

1978 Family Letter -May 2

Tuesday Evening, May 2, 1978

Dear Family:

This time change is nice as far as working in the yard in the evening, was outside this evening until 8:30 mowing the yard for the second time and also going between the rows in the garden with the cultivator.  The other half of the apple tree by the playhouse has blown over.  We had our first meal of asparagus tonight and hope to get the patch larger this summer, Bert and John do you recall what a nice patch there was up at Hudson Guild?

At the monthly church meeting last night the Board voted to raise $20,000 over a year (yes, the word three should be first ) period to put a new roof (the present one has been there since 1876), spouting, storm windows and more insulation.  Jim Wright the pastor at the Christian Church left yesterday to become a chaplain in the service – he has been going to school for some time for special training in this area.

Sunday night was the annual Senior Citizens Banquet at the Church and we helped serve.  There was an excellent program by a lady from Dayton, who pretended to carry on conversations with others by herself.   The meal was unique, which really does not sound like the right word, but there was just enough chairs to seat all the guests and the workers . . . what luck.

The Methodists have closed Camp Sabina and Rev. Briggs there has been assigned a church in the Springfield district.  Heard that they are trying to sell the grounds to the Village of Sabina.

Last Saturday we virtually toured the county looking at cars – prices have zoomed up since we bought a car in 1974.  Started out and ended up getting a car at Tolles here in NV – he is celebrating his 11th year as a dealer, the vast majority of which has been as a mobil home dealer.  The car is listed as getting an average of 22 miles to the gallon, so we are curious to see how it works out.  Wilma Croghan got a car new to her – a Mercury – like ours, only newer.  We got a Plymouth Vellare or rather we are to get it this coming weekend after it has been rust-proofed underneath.  As part of his 11th anniversary celebration Gary is offering that service for only $11 – supposedly a $85 value.

Dad has written most of this letter and Serena is going to add a couple of lines.  It was nice talking to both Catherine and Roberta this past weekend and we missed talking to you John on your Watts line but glad to get all your letters, family.  John, yours came this AM which was quite a long one for you – had wanted to call you to relieve your mind about transportation but it is hard to get through to you.

We (Dad and I) are going to take Serena to Dayton and Dad will go to the Ohio Bar Convention which is conveniently meeting at this time.  We plan to stay at the Stouffer Inn – Dayton's newest hotel.  Ruth is to stay with Mary Virginia.  And Kelly is to stay here Friday night but we will be back by then.

Really thought those were such nice notes that Marion wrote to Mary Virginia in her Nothing Book and in the front of her "Illusions."  I've started to read the latter and find it very interesting.  Hope that all goes well with her.

[from Serena]
Roberta, John and Steve went to Mount Vernon and got some of the accessories off of the Granada.  Ray is willing to buy your stereo and is willing to pay about $80 for it.

I got the last of my stitches out yesterday and am more or less back to normal except for trouble in my left elbow joint.

We went to the Mother-daughter meeting of the Mother's Club tonight which was alright.  All the guests got an African violet.  I think that I will leave mine home for Mother to kill.

I was over at the high school yesterday and Mrs. Mandrell and Mr. Garber asked about Roberta.

[back to Dad or Mom?]
Wednesday morning:  Sun is bright and hope the danger of frost is over with so that the garden will do some growing – the strawberries are out in bloom.

Wendell Mahanes is to come this morning and relay our chimney – a number of the old bricks in the chimney had splintered which let water in and then we had a leak in the living room ceiling, so we hope this will take care of the problem.  Wendell fixed Grandma's porch railing where it had disintegrated.

[Love, etc.]

1978 Roberta's Letter -May 1

May 1, 1978
Dear Family,

Seems like there have been alot of phone calls lately, and little letter writing . . . . at least from this end.  I've started several letters, but then after the phone calls they seem outdated.  I'm glad that Serena wasn't hurt any worse . . . . . She must be sore . . . . what a terrible way to spend her vacation!!!!  She told me that she would be flying back, and that is good.

We had some weekend . . . . . . Saturday all day we looked at cars . . . . or should I say trucks.  I had decided I wanted a small truck.  We looked at the Ford place . . . they make something they call the Courier. . . it doesn't get that good of gas mileage, high priced.  Also spent alot of time at the Toyota place.  They did not have a short bed (six foot) but were willing to give the long bed truck at the short bed price.  But as for driving, and other things (like expense of putting shell on) it wasn't a good idea.  It drove alot harder.  The lot was full of long bed trucks and they would have loved to have sold one.

Both the Datsun place and the Toyota place is on Broadway . . . . between Alma School and Dobson.  I've got all the details at home, but guess I told you all most of them.  We looked at two trucks at the Datsun place.  The one was what I got.  The other was one with just Air/Conditioning.  It was a burnt orange.  Price wise it was just about the same as the one I got . . . . since it was not a demonstrator.

The Buick I'm afraid has had it, now the radiator is not leaking, but it doesn't hold pressure like it should.  It boils over easily.  As soon as I parked the car on Friday in Phoenix before the test.  It emptied out on me.  Luckily enough I had two gallons of water with me, so have the test I just filled it up.  It seems to do fine except for when you have to be in traffic . . . . sitting still idling (sp?) is when the trouble begins.

I'm now in time room – proctoring it – thats where the students have to come to serve time – for unexcused absences, homework not turned in, etc. – So far no one is here – but the 11:15 (lunch bell) just rang – so business should be picking up.  I'm doing it for Dorothy – as she has to be gone all afternoon – so she needed time this AM to work ––

It's just as well you all know about Marion – she will be going in the hospital on the 11th of May – surgery is set up for 12 May – 7:30 AM.  Doctor says she will be in from 5 to 7 days – she will then have to take it easy for 8 weeks after that.  On the 15 June she hopes to go to Idaho – by plane – to her sisters.  In July she plans to spend in Augusta, Ill w/ her folks – in August her & I.T. plan to do some travelling.  I.T. will be coming here – by plane 5 June – then they will fly to Denver 15 June – then drive to Idaho from there in I.T.'s car ––

I've gotten letters from John, Catherine – seems I need to get busy writing some letters.

It's after lunch now, and seem to have a few spare minutes, so will add a few more lines.  I just now talked to Martha about my time off for taking the test, etc.  I sorta messed it up since I took off Friday morning to study and take it easy.  She told me I could count it all off as sick leave.  I hate to use up much sick leave that way, but we will see what happens.  In one of the letters I started before I mention how I got a hold of the ARCO book, Probation and Parole – its a civil service study guide type book, actual tests, suggestions, etc.  The only one in the valley – after calling up bookstores, libraries, etc. was one in the downtown Phoenix library.  Marion and I went down after it Thursday evening.  I got a interlibrary loan deal from the Mesa Library.  Now I just have to return it to the Mesa Library.  Dad, you might be interested in that they are considering building a new library here in Mesa.  They say the old is too small to remodel.  It really is a nice library.

Marion had sun screens put in the two windows upstairs.  They really make a big difference.  Are to keep the room 15 degrees cooler.  You can see out but people on the outside can't see in.  They cost about $100.00 for the two screens.  Her sister had given her money for her birthday, so that was what she spent it on.  Since she got the news of cancer, she has really cut down on her shopping . . . or should I say buying.

The heavy rains hit us the day you all left (February 28th) and just this last week Alma School Road was finally opened up.  It will make it alot easier for Marion coming home.  Today is a cool, rainy day.  Funny because we have air conditioning to use for the first time.

All day yesterday we spent cleaning . . . except for going to the 11:00 church service.  The place really looks clean and as Marion says neither one of our Mothers are coming to visit.  Now that the house is clean, do come over!!!!  I'd be proud to give you all a ride in a bright yellow truck!!!!

We have been buying alot of cantaloupe lately.  You can get six small one for $1 – which is a good buy.  Lettuce has really gone high . . . . . about $1 a head, sometimes more.  I don't know how these salad bars are making it now.

What is Serena's address in Kansas City . . . . I don't know if I ever did have it?  I feel badly that the accident had to happen to her.

Dad, as to the settlement on the car.  Two things . . . . we put side molding on the car . . . . that was about $80, and the radio was close to $300.  John said it didn't work like it should but they don't need to know that.  Guess the one speaker wasn't working.  I'm glad that John got a good year out of it.  It was fun buying it, and he seemed to enjoy it . . . . but often I wish I had bought a smaller, more economical car.  I want to keep good records on this truck and see what it costs to operate it.  The Buick was beginning to use up gas like crazy, so should be able to tell quite a difference.

Love,
Berta

1978 Roberta's Letter - April 17

April 17, 1978
Dear Family,

Here it is Monday morning . . . have been thinking all week-end about writing . . . did get a letter finished to John that I had started earlier in the week, and also one to Catherine off.  John called about 11:30 Friday night.  I was half asleep, but we must have talked for about a half hour or so.  The connection was very bad . . . couldn't hardly hear him.  He said he would be home this weekend.

We have had some cool weather . . . had planned to go swimming this weekend, but it was cool . . . very windy.  It was only 50 some this morning !!!

Saturday I had a strange day as to getting things picked up from being repaired.  I did tell you that I dropped my good watch, so had taken it in to get fixed.  They told me it would be $13.50 to get fixed – main spring had been broken.  So when I went in to pick it up it was on the bill $18.50. . . so I readily said that it was supposed to be only $13.50 . . . after much talk, them telling me that I had agreed to pay . . . which I had not.  Finally the outcome was that my watch had not been fixed after all.  Now, I'll just wait til I get home to get it fixed.  In the meantime I bought a $9.00 timex, which I like alot.  It is brown, silver trim.  Large face (something like Mary's and has a second hand).

Then we went from there to the shoe store, where I had gotten my new pair of sandals.  I had given them my old ones to fix.  I had not asked how much it would be, so I was in for quite a surprise.  For a pair of sandals that cost me $18 to begin with . . . cost me $22 to get fixed ! ! !  I was in shock ! ! !  I felt like telling them to keep the shoes, but the guy had been so nice when he made the sandals for me.  Next time I'm going to ask how much before I leave something to be fixed.

We did practically nothing all weekend.  Until the car gets fixed, we won't be going far.  The seals seem to have all gone bad.  It is leaking transmission fluid bad.  I'm beginning to wish I had a more dependable car.  This one you can depend on spending money on it.  I have written John and also talked to him over the phone about the granada.  I'm telling him that perhaps he would like to take the money that he had paid Grandma and put that toward his own car.  I'll pay him that money back.  He talked about selling the granada.  Which makes little sense to me.  It should have some good years ahead of it.  I would need to put A/C in it, but that makes a whole lot more sense than putting it in the Buick.  Marion would like to keep the Buick in running condition to go back and fourth to school in.  Either that or she talks about getting another older car.  She seems to think that the Buick still has some miles left in it.  I'm anxious to see what the price of this transmission problem is going to be.  The guy said at least $180, and perhaps $350 if the metal has gone bad.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm trying to get this done too quickly – as if you all can't tell.  I've got so much news about what all has happened here at work, but for now I better not get into it.  Will get some memo's out and then come back to this letter.

Remember the Mexican Restaurant we ate at when you all were here, the one in Tempe, the Mandes took us there for supper on Saturday.  We all ordered these big dinners, but also ordered a cheese crisp – as like an appetizer – it was giant – like a huge pizza.  I could only eat about half of my dinner – so you know what I mean when I say how much food there was.  But then later that night we were at Fudgies . . . had talked about banana splits . . . but most of got just two dips.  Guess Rene had his banana split.

Sunday at Church there wasn't the crowd like there has been earlier.  The tourist season is really come to a close.  Eating out in the restaurants is another sure sign that the tourists are on their way back home . . . Sure don't see the Iowa license plates that we saw for so long.

As to license plates for the buick . . . I plan to buy Arizona tags . . . for a car that old it will only coast about $12.  For a new car, if its a big one a license cost about $120 or so.  Also has to go through inspection which cost about $5 . . . about smog control . . . doesn't have to be done on cars older than 1966 . . . so the Buick just makes it.

I better close for now . . . trying to get this letter out down here right now is not the easiest thing to do!!

Love,
Berta

1977 MV's letter -Dec.27

[12-27-77?]
Dear Mom & Dad,

Hi!  Right now Roberta and [I] are at the school – sorry she just left.  She went for an interview for her new job.  She's had me working most of the morning, filing, alphabetizing stuff, etc.  How boring!!!!

John, you'll be glad to know that we got all the way to Gila Bend Ariz. on your tank of gas!!  I was about to have a nervous break-down, because we'd been riding on empty for about 30 miles, and Roberta thought it was exciting!!!  We only made 2 stops - one for 5.00 worth of gas, and the other for cheese-burgers, which we ate on way.

Well, as soon as we got back, we dropped our stuff off, and went to pick up Buffie.  Buffie was over-joyed to see us – but it wasn't exactly the same way with us – he smelled as if he had chased a cat thru' the sewer!  So we decided to hose him down it was so bad.  Poor Buffie!  After that he still smelled a little bit, so Roberta decided to get an appointment to give him a bath.  But, last nite, when we went over to pick the Buick, Buffie almost went to the bathroom on the ladies good carpet!  So last nite Roberta set out newspapers, and told Buffie, if had to go, to go on the newspapers.  Well, he did it but not on the newspapers!  What a head-ache!!!!  Remind me to stick with the Silver Streak!!!

Well, today Roberta topped all of her bad days.  When she went out to go to her interview, she discovered that she had left the key that locks the locked door to the Nova.  So she called the police, who told her to call the Fire Dept. who couldn't get in so she called the lock-smith who finally got it to open for $15.00.  And the afternoon is yet to come!!!!

If I get any Mail, please send it here!  Thanks!!

Love
