1980 Family Letter -Nov.5

Wednesday --
November 5, 1980
Dearest Family,

We had a wonderful weekend at Gatlinburg -- the weather was so beautiful and the leaves still full of color.  We stopped at Boone Tavern on the way down for lunch.  Being Halloween they had pumpkin soup, trick or treat salad, hobgoblin sundae and other goodies.  The motel where we all stayed was just about three years old and very posh.  It had four floors and a glass elevator.  The pool was actually on two levels with a slide between and a whirlpool which really helped us to relax after our trip down.  Most of the rest went up to Pigeon Forge to have dinner at the Apple Tree Inn (where we ate years ago) but we weren't at all that hungry.  They had a family style dinner with three meats and too much other food they all said.  They held the Autumn Promenade at the convention center where there must have been close to 50 squares in one room and then the more advanced were in another room.  It was quite an experience.  We found out Saturday night that our group tied with another for fourth largest group there -- 26 people and the largest to come the farthest.

Gatlinburg turned us off as far as so many shops and tourist attractions. We did look around Saturday -- found the library closed but very attractive -- off the tourist tract and asked many before we were told where to find it.  We did see the Bearskin Motel where we had stayed 20 (?) years ago. [A postcard of the Bearskin Motel mailed 8/1/60 can be found on the blog here.]  It is still starred in the Mobil Tour Guide but has certainly had its day.  The pool still in the shape of a bearskin was still filled with water but also leaves and dirt.

We got an early start coming home and went to church in Harrogate, Tennessee at a pretty little Baptist Church where the minister announced his resignation to the congregation that morning and had everyone including us in tears by his emotions and remarks.  We also stopped at Cumberland Gap and saw two movies (10 minutes each) and historical data there.

Mary Virginia seemed to have a good but busy weekend so hadn't missed us too much -- we got home about 8PM before she did.  She and Kelly Walker had gone to the Visitation Day at Wilmington College and had enjoyed it.  In reading last night's paper found she had written a letter to the editor which we hope to include in this.

Mrs. Belle Gordon passed away Sunday and they had calling hours yesterday and the funeral is private this afternoon.  Friday she was looking forward to coming home but they found a blood clot and she died as a result of the surgery.   (She had a slight stroke a week before and was in Clinton Memorial).  All the girls except Nancy are home and Jack was at the funeral home as well as Virginia's sister Betty and her husband who has been in the hospital with a very bad heart.  Anxious to see if Jack moves back as he had said Mrs. Gordon was the reason he had moved out several years ago.  She was just 3½  months less than 97.

Mrs. Walker was to have had the Mothers Club last night but Charlotte Hause had it in her place and Mary Virginia gave the program -- our annual musical.  She did an excellent job and I wished that I had taped it.  Bill Kincaid was her accompanist.  The theme of our programs this year is Love and so she was asked to do love songs and the group was to answer roll call with their favorite love song.  She sang "Love is a Song", "I Wonder", "Indian Love Call", "Some Day My Prince Will Come", "Pagan Love Song", "Longer", and "Goodnight My Someone".  Four of the members came in late because of working at the election polls and Easter Star services at the funeral home so she did an encore of I Wonder with Bill singing with her this time.  She got a lot of compliments.

The news of the outcome of the election was quite a surprise coming so early but can't say that I was at all unhappy about Reagan's election.  Haven't heard yet whether Helen Hiestand won the Highland County recorder's job.  The Republican running against John Glenn for Senator didn't do well at all

Last nite Dad went to a bank dinner and then square dancing to keep Mary Virginia and me up on the things taught at the most recent sessions.  Tonight he has Lions Club and our United Methodist Women is meeting too in place of next week when the church is having a week of evangelistic services.

Catherine we didn't get out of passing out treats as Beggars Night was last Thursday night.  We must have given well over a hundred balloons between six and seven and then turned out our porch light briefly so we could eat supper without interruptions as we tried earlier without any luck at all.  But the majority had come evidently for we never had another one.  We had all sizes and ages, masked and unmasked.  We had given up going to the Halloween Square Dance for didn't want to leave MV home alone and she later decided to go Halloweening in Sabina with some friends who have little brothers and sisters.  But we got to bed early and plenty of rest before our trip.

Roberta we have tried to reach you often on the phone but no one answers so guess we are calling at a bad time.  Had wanted to know Agnes' new address so could complete the Guideposts subscription list but got our fourth reminder from the magazine with list and noticed her address has been changed.  I meant to ask if any of you would want to subscribe for any friends it is a good opportunity to get it at a reasonable price so let us know for next year.  They also have three other editions at the same price -- Big Print, Braille and Talking Book.  Joe Horton never got his so sent it in with the Andover, Massachusetts address (via Raymes pouch) so hope that it goes through.  None of the foreign subscriptions I ordered last year were acknowledged except Joe and he never got the magazine.

Have talked to Kim several more times and the church voted to send him a notarized letter (as requested) but really feel it is too late this school year for Mie Young to come and she isn't going to school there so has wasted at least several months.  Of course they didn't realize what a hassle it would be for her to get out of the country.

On the Gatlinburg trip we enjoyed having the Harners go with us -- is is still hard for us to call Melba Harner rather than Melba Fawley, as she was before Stan's death.  The Harners are "talking" of going to Seattle next year to the Square Dance Convention.  We have sent in our reservations for the ABA mtg in New Orleans the 2nd week of August.  In '82 it will be in San Francisco.

Dad will soon be ready to mail this unless we wait til noon in case we might hear from one of you.  Got your message, Serena, about your not being able to call til you get your teeth and/or root canals paid for -- do make sure that it isn't their idea of how to gain experience in that field  We have heard of more people getting ripped off that way.  Too bad you are not nearer Catherine's dentist employer for a second opinion.

Hope you enjoy your long weekend, John and Carol.  Do you also have next Monday off, Roberta?  MV and I are going to Huron for the Women Anew weekend -- more about that later.

With much love to all of you,
Dad & Mother

1970 Roberta's postcard -Nov.6

[Postmarked Nov 6 1970]

Hi!  I got your post-card & also the boots & pictures & stamps.  I've been trying to remember the names of F.B.S. kids in the pictures.

On campus there is a group of 4 kids from Wilmington College - OHIO!!  They are studying Quaker Education.  They have been to F.B.S. and also the school in North Dakota that Stuckey is president of.  They said it had alot of Quaker influence now.  They are now only half done on their tour.

It's started raining again here and has gotten alot colder.

We are to go in and see "The Cross & the Switch-blade" next Friday night.  It is suppose to be very good.  It is playing in Portland.  Thanks again for the boots, stamps & pictures.

Love, Bert

1990 Catherine's Letter -Nov.4

11-4-90

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  I talked to Roberta on the phone after she returned from Ohio but we haven't gotten together yet.  We do have plans for Wednesday though so I should see her then.  Your letter made a quick trip to Phoenix but has been delayed in getting on to Glendale.

We had our heat on for the first time yesterday as the early morning temperature dropped to 49ยบ.  It had been about two weeks since we turned the air conditioning off!

Gerry mowed the lawn yesterday and trimmed the shrubbery.  The grass is still fairly green but the colder nights will probably speed it into dormancy quickly.  The leaves are beginning to fall off our nectarine tree too.

It's been busy at the library.  We're doing teacher collections now (35 books for a month and we pick out the books) and that keeps us busy.  Our dept. still has a vacant position which we hope to fill in the next couple of weeks.  It's a YA position so hopefully there will be some qualified applicants to choose from.

Arizona is having Kids Voting at the polls tomorrow along with regular voting -- I'm helping at our precinct in the morning.  I don't think it will be too busy though since 80% of this precinct is Glencroft Senior Center!

Got to go!

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1990 Family Letter -Nov.4

Nov. 4, 1990

Dearest Family --

Dad thought we ought to really surprise you and write a letter before the year is out -- it is coming fast but the weather has been marvelous.  I'm sure the cold is coming but ever since the day Roberta left it has been especially beautiful -- so sorry that she couldn't have had it warmer.

We went to Ponderosa after church today -- G'ma went to Sunday School then home for a nap.  She eats very well and still had some to take home with her.

Mary Virginia called and they plan to move the 16-17th.  They have a three bedroom house in town and plan to get a U-Haul truck as the church will pay for it.  Then just a few days later they will be coming up here for Thanksgiving -- they go back Thursday as they have to be in Macon, GS for Cathy's wedding rehearsal Friday evening.  I think Serena, John and possibly Julie will be here for Thanksgiving too.  Wish that you all could be here.

I talked briefly to Wendy on the phone the other day to tell here that Oprah Winfrey's guests were New Kids on the Block with some of the parents so don't know whether she was in time to see it or not.  She was to have no school on Friday due to a teachers meeting.

We had a nice visit with Serena last Tuesday when we took Roberta later to the airport.  She was getting new furniture for her office plus some other things so it was a busy day for her but at least Roberta got to see where she works and lives.  Greenville is a real nice city and has a nice library.

Dad is busy trying to get the field across the street leveled and rocks out to plant grass.  It has been torn out for so long when they put the sewer lines through.  It will look much better and be more to mow.

Mrs. Thornburg celebrated her 90th birthday last Sunday and had a fall on Monday which has slowed her up some.  No broken bones found when she went to the emergency room but Wilma is doing quite a bit for her, going after her and she did ride the chair lift.  She is still good for her age.

Dad planted so much cabbage and broccoli in the garden and we have been giving it away but we still have some -- broccoli keeps growing til almost Christmas if we have decent weather.  Our asparagus prospects look great . . . for next Spring.

The Hortons left last Wednesday morning for LW, we miss their great help with Grandma.  Things seem to be running smoother with the four helpers vs. the earlier six helpers.

Friday evening we were guests of the Sankers at their Church's monthly social, where the speaker (ran) across the U.S. but he is confined to crutches, very inspirational talk.

Do you think out typewriter needs a new ribbon, cleaning (or Dad says) to be replaced?  So do expect an improvement in our next letter.

John, we are anxious to hear you & Julie's next experience in Chicago.  Connie Croghan has been working in Chicago -- as PRI (Buckeye successor [?]) are closing out their N.V. office & she is helping them to train people in the new office.

Love,
Mother & Dad

1970 Roberta's Letter -Nov.3

Nov. 3, 1970

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for the letter & check today.  The check will cover everything right now.  I did buy the Wycliffe Bible Commentary.  It really helps me alot in my Bible Work.  I got the 1968 edition -- 1527 pages as to the the 1966 - 1515 pages!  The price was still the same.

We have been having beautiful weather here.  It gets up to about 60-65 which seems pretty warm to us all.

Should I check in and see about flying home -- do you think it would be worth it?  If I fly I better be getting on the ball, huh?  Here are some pictures that I've taken.  Be sure & keep them.  Maybe you could mail them to Aunt Mary & Uncle Bill to let them see them.

We got our first test back in History.  I got a "B".  I'm still not too fond of the class.  If we could just get to the 1800's.  We're still messing with Washington, etc. -- maybe I should say we finally got that far.  We're having our 2nd History test this Friday.  Also a big Bible test -- wish me luck!

I hope you are feeling lots better now Daddy.  Thanks again for the letter & check.

Love,
Bert

[Written on the envelope]

Thanks for the stamps.  They will come in very handy!!

Election 1970
McCall will win in Oregon -- I hope!!  I hope Taft wins!!  Think John Gilligan will win?  I'll know in about 6 hours!!  I don't like Metzenbaum!!

1950 - HH opens law practice - pictures - Nov.5

In honor of HH's 95th birthday -- sorry he's not here to celebrate with us -- here are some pictures taken a few days after his 25th birthday, Nov. 5, 1950.

Evidently the sign was first erected in front of the CJU/GHU residence, and was later moved to the family's next residence in the apartment building at the corner of Routes 28 & 73, now the location of the Family Dollar store.

Nov. 2, 1970

Hi!  It's really cold & rainy, with possibilities of snow.  Tomorrow I register for spring qtr.  I think I will take a course called "The Consumer & Economic Change" and the German seminar.  Plans are developing for Thanksgiving.  We will probably be leaving here about 6AM on Thurs.  The place where you can pick us up is near Rt. 35 about 20 minutes from Xenia.  I'll send you a map and we'll be able to call you when we are about an hour away.  Return trip will be Sunday mid-morning probably.  Can all this work in with your plans?  Hope so. How did election come out?

Love, Catherine

TIRCK OR TREAT!

How many did you have this year?  Dick and I went out in weird costumes but only got two apples -- we only knocked on one door!  This quarter is half over, next week I'll register for my last quarter here.  Hard for me to believe.  Will you be in NV for Thanksgiving?  If so, see you then!

1980 Catherine's Letter -Oct.31

Friday, October 31, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  We're thinking of you being in Gatlinburg right now.  At least you get out of passing out candy to the Trick-or-Treaters.  It's a little past 6:00 and we have had 3 so far.  Hopefully we won't have as many as we did last year (around 85) since we don't live in such a congested area any more.

I did OK at the dentist's for October taking in over 16,000.  I figure my bonus to be $177 of course they take taxes out of that but still it's OK for my first month!  Next month and December too will probably be much less -- for one thing we were (#4 just here) open 18 days this month whereas next month because of holidays and other days we will be closed there will only be 13 days we will be open.

We got our tax bill this week.  It comes to $690 but the state pays a % so we only pay $521.94.  We had budgeted $675 so it was nice to find it much lower.  That $521.94 is after the 3% discount we get for paying it by the 15th.

Wendy is watching Sesame Street right now. It is on from 6 -7 and she likes to watch it.

Mother, what I was trying to think to tell you last Friday was that I tried the microwave yogurt recipe and it came out super!  The only difficulty is finding about five hours when I am home and when I don't want to use the microwave for anything else.  Last Saturday Gerry had to work so I spent the afternoon making yogurt and also two batches of bread which I hadn't made since before we became apartment managers.  Hopefully with my days off I will have time to do more things like that.  This week we were closed on Monday as Dr. Woll was out of town so I worked Friday and had Monday off.  I got a new permanent that afternoon.  Dr. Woll is also going to be gone the 7th, 10th, & 11th of November but it will be my turn to work on the 7th, then I'll have the 10th off and work the 11th.  I think all of us will have the day after Thanksgiving off but I am not sure about that yet.  Gerry is thinking of possibly taking that day off also but we haven't thought of anything to do if we do have a long weekend.  Possibly go stay in Portland for a night or two.  (Now up to #8 on trick or treaters.)

Now #9 & 10 just here.  It's 6:35 so the next hour will probably be the most concentrated.  The staff at the Day Care Center were all dressed up in costumes today.  Wendy didn't know what to think until she figured out who they were.  She still isn't sure about all these people coming to the door.

Gerry has tomorrow off so we are going down to Bend and buy some foam for the back of the truck, courtesy of Grandma.  Then we are going to cover the foam with carpet and we will have some comfy padding to make up our bed when we go camping.  We also plan to go to a meat market and a canned food store in hopes of finding some bargains and eat lunch out somewhere but we haven't decided where yet.

Your letter arrived yesterday.  Thanks.  Interesting article on children's play.  What do you think the election results are going to be?  It seems likes a pretty close race.  Probably it will all be over by the time you get this!

Hope to hear from you again soon!

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

1970 Roberta's Letter -Oct.31

Oct. 31, 1970

Dear Family,

Happy Halloween!  I hope you all are fine.  Today it is alot warmer and nicer outside.  We juts got back from Salem about 1:00 this afternoon from Salem.

This campus almost folds up every week-end.  I stayed all night last night with Judy and then got up and had another big breakfast -- We didn't even have any lunch.  Of course - breakfast wasn't over till about 11:00.  Supper is in about 20 minutes -- I'm getting hungry.  Saturday nite supper is always good -- steak - etc.

My room-mate is gone for the week-end.  She has to take her dirty clothes home and let her mother wash them.  Her mother is scared to death Mary won't get enough Vitamin A or C -- it's all very funny.

Pam wants me to come to her house for Thanksgiving.  She lives in Tacoma, Washington.  I've got some pictures I will send you all of my friends, etc.

We all went to the airport last night.  I got my "we try harder" buttons there.

I'm getting alot of good out of the Bible dictionary I bought.  I did buy "Ungers".  It's suppose to be one of the best.

How is Grandma?  Could you all find my boots?

Vanessa's dad got laid off from N.C.R.  I guess you knew her brother also got laid off right around the time I left Ohio.  I wonder whats the matter with N.C.R. anyway.

How was the Halloween Carnival?  I remember last year when I lost the car keys & a bunch of other keys.

Could you all find a Bible Camentary [Commentary perhaps] If you got one sitting around I could use it.  The Wycliff's is the one we're suppose to have.  Bible sure isn't easy.  I still like English the best -- we do some real "fun" things in that class.  It's really something.

Well.  I better close for now.

Hope everything is fine with you all.

Love,
Bert

1970 Roberta's Postcard -Oct.29

 [Postmarked Oct. 29, 1970]

Thanks alot for your post-card today, dad.  I'm glad to hear that you're feeling alot better.

There seems to be a mistake in the weather today -- no snow or rain.  It's really nice -- for a change.

That is something about Mares having the mumps -- isn't she supposed to be teaching now?

Burr Oak Lodge looked very pretty.  Please don't tell me you all went swimming while there.  Just how warm is it in OHIO?

Was glad to talk to you the 27th.  Sorry about the "collect".  Hope you can find my boots -- they should be in a grocery sack some where in Mary Virginia's bedroom.  I think!

Love, Bert

1970 Roberta's Letter -Oct.26

Oct. 26, 1970

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for your letter today.  Also the stamps -- you must know how much I need them. (use them!)

Well.   I really had a big week-end.  Friday night we went to Salem but got back at the school before 1:00 A.M.  then Saturday I did some homework, wrote some letters, and tried to find a job -- (no luck!).  So then Saturday night Judy decided school was a bore and invited me to come to her house over-night.  I really had a good time.

We slept till 12:00 noon on Sunday.  Well -- we were sleepy.  We got up & Judy's mother fixed us a very big breakfast.  Like: pancakes, biscuits, Canadian bacon, sausage, apples, Good orange juice, milk, and some other stuff.  WOW!  You wouldn't have believed it!

Thanks alot for getting Betty Waits Caplinger address.  I'll have to get a note off to her.

I'm glad you all enjoy the book.  I really like it myself.

The book store wouldn't buy my nutrition book.  He said he didn't know if they would be using the same book next year.  I hope to get into Portland State's bookstore & sell it.

I hope you're feeling alot better Daddy.

This new time.  So much light in the morning.  I'm not to sure about it.  It's always pitch dark by about 6:00 p.m. (before 6:00 usually).

The school is having Spiritual Emphasis Week this week.  There are special speakers & all.  We also have meetings at 11:00 A.M.-1:00 and 9:00 P.M. -10:00 that we have to go to.  There are less classes & less homework this week. (Great!)

Well.  supper is in about 10 minutes.  I'll wait  now -- the line would be so long right now (probably) I'll wait till about 10 minutes after they start serving.

I'm writing a paper in English "Cats are more intelligent than most people think."  It's just an essay type of thing.

We do have Chapel 3 times a week.  Under no condition are we to miss.  Also every Wednesday evening are services.  Also every Sunday morning.  We are allowed to go to any type of church tho.  They sorta want you to go somewhere on Sunday A.M. (Pressure)

How is Grandma?  I've only heard from her once.

What is new with Catherine?  I hear all the news from Aunt Mary about the Hortons.  Wow!  Her famous C/C's!  You know that's what I need.

Well will write more later.  In a couple of days!

Love,
Roberta
P.S. Hope you have fun this week-end.

[10/28/70]
Got both a letter (10/23) and a card (10/26) from you today (10/28).  The notarizing didn't cost anything so it all depends on U.S. Mail whether I will get to vote or not.  Glad to hear you are doing better, Dad.  It looks like both Dick and I will be coming to NV for Thanksgiving.  We will have a ride to Beaver Falls (?) which I think is south of Dayton.  Can you pick us up there or would I-75 be better?  Not sure yet if it will be Wed. evening or Thursday morning.  Will send details when I know them.  I'm waiting until after this qtr to apply to Western, in hopes my grades this qtr will be better.  Know anything about changing residences?  Guess I'll call the Court House here.  Love, Catherine

Hello.  I've been here in Salem for the night -- stayed with Judy's family.  It takes about a half hour to get to Salem from Newberg.  Salem is nice -- alot smaller than Portland.  We were also here Friday night -- Hope you all are fine.

1980 Family Letter Oct.25

Saturday
10-25-80

Dearest Family -

Dad is working here at the shop so thought I would try using Phyllis' typewriter but it's too complicated for me -- at least I can erase some of my mistakes.  We stopped here on our way back from Glen Este where the bands were in competition but it was so windy and cold we only saw 2.  East Clinton was second and don't know how the people will sit through the whole program -- many were leaving.  Se stopped to eat at the new shopping mall at Eastgate at a York Steak House.  After looking over the mall it was snowing when we returned to the car.  By the way we saw Helen Carr with her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren -- about 14, 7 and another one expected before long.  She said Joe Hiestand is going to Dayton for tests as they won't tell him anything so far but he is being much more careful.

Dad got home last night from Atlanta and New York.  Mary Virginia went with the band to Clinton Massie but it poured rain so much that they didn't even get off the band bus -- Mr. Wilson decided to keep them in good shape for today but even leaving after half-time they didn't get home til about midnight.  She worked til midnite Thursday night on the Haunted Church and will probably go back there when she gets home and will be even later if they clean things up to be ready for church tomorrow.

M V is staying with the Hannahs while we go to Gatlinburg and already has a busy weekend planned.  The last football game at home is with Blanchester and is parents night (next year we will have to be on hand).  Saturday she is going to Wilmington College for the day as they are entertaining high school students.  That evening is the banquet for the summer softball players and then she is to go to a Halloween party (on Nov. 1).

We are taking the Harners with us to Gatlinburg.  I don't know how they manage to go so much as they will have been square dancing Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.  They invited us to go with them but there are other things that we like to do too.  Plus they keep up with both their churches and Melba's hours often require her to work in the evening.

Jo Streber was to have been operated on yesterday but haven't heard anything as yet how the operation came out but they were not to get up too much hope.  Some of you remember Ethel Pendall -- she celebrated her 99th birthday last Wednesday.

Bill Holmes passed away this morning -- he was knocked down by a dog and broke his hip.  He never recuperated from the setting of it.  Too bad yet he had a long full life and his mind was so clear.  Julian McKenzie also passed away last week -- another in his 90's.

The annual Halloween Carnival is at the school tonight and guess we will go there for supper but doubt if we see much of the carnival and later to the Haunted Church but I'd just as soon donate a couple of dollars and not go through it but realize they have put alot of work into it.

Anxious to hear about Serena's trip to the dentist for appointment(s) to have her wisdom teeth pulled.  Don't envy her that but something we all have to lose eventually.  Got letter and phone call from Catherine yesterday and cards from John and Carol today.  Glad to hear from all of them.  Imagine Roberta is still recuperating from her trip -- we want to call her but never know when she is in -- it is either too early in the morning or she is at work so will try again tomorrow.

Buckeye Molding is having their open house tomorrow -- the buildings look real nice but as Dad says they now need some shrubbery around them.  Kevin's part has not moved up there yet but most everything else has.  MV said the only expenditure on the Haunted Church was $4 for staples as Kevin was able to get so much from Buckeye -- even gravestone from melted over plastic.

1980 Roberta's Letter -Oct.23

[10/23/80]
Thursday Evening

Dear Family,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR DADDY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!  Maybe Mary Virginia can add the right tune to make my birthday greetings to you.

Thanks for your last letter.  I'm sure glad that Joe made it to Ohio and had a few days to visit with you all.  Tho I'm sure the time for him there went very fast.  It was just like having Grandma here -- the time went fast -- and we didn't get everything done that I would have liked to.

I must have started six letters out at work to you all today.  We got a new typewriter out there but I just hate it.  I've tried to type on it over and over again.  The spacer is the worst of the problems it has.  It is an electric typewriter, but to get the spacer to work you have to practically beat on it.  Then it always spaces twice.  It is a "slightly used" machine . . . guess they got one very good deal on it -- but my feeling is they should have given it to us.  It's a mess!!!!  Now we have to give everyone that comes to the center an ID card -- they are supposed to be typed ----  I always feel like I could get out five by hand by the time I type one!!!

We have really had the problem out at work with people making reservations -- they have to have one for the following day -- and we are now to the point where we are turning away more than we can accept.  It creates alot of hard feelings and problems.  We are not allowed to set aside any meals -- but we do for those in extreme need.  But the big problem is that the people that live here year round cannot get preference to the winter visitors.  Then the problems really start -- the "regulars" come and see all the out of state cars in the parking lot -- and that gets them most upset.  The situation is now that by ten after eight we are filled up with how many we can take over the phone and that by 9:30 or 10:00 we are filled up with the list that we put out on the front table for those who come early.  I really dread the time when the winter visitors really start pouring in.  Most of them are just looking for a good FREE meal -- in fact it is already showing that our average donation is going way down.

Tonight I am taking a review for the CPR course.  This one is at the Deseret Sam Hospital so its pretty close by.  Seems like I really am keeping very busy -- tho sometimes at the end of the week I have to think hard about what all I've done!!  I keep thinking I should quit the moonlighting -- but I really do enjoy it too much -- and the extra money never hurts.  This last week I have worked some at home for Harry (the owner of the flower shop).  I came back to a bigger mess there after being gone two Saturdays -- than I did at the senior center.  I've been doing all of his billing -- some can be done on the computer but most of it is done the long hard way.  Harry's new shop -- out East is really picking up the business.  Now all the shops in the new shopping center are there -- he is right next to a combination card shop / book store -- it opened up just about a month ago.  I'm sure that has helped alot.

I must close . . . more later!

Love,
Roberta

1980 Catherine's Letter to John -Oct.23

 Thursday evening

October 23, 1980

Dear John & Carol,

Hi!  Thanks for your letter for us and Grandma and Roberta.  It arrived after they had left so I mailed it on to Grandma.  Now I can't remember much of what you wrote so you will have to send me your news all over again!

We sure had a good time while they were here.  Grandma certainly seems to be doing well.  And Wendy was old enough to interact with them.  She and Roberta got along real well.  She called Roberta "Aunt Roberta" and Roberta caller her "Wendy Jean".  They played alot of games where Roberta pretended she was Wendy Jean and Wendy was Aunt Roberta.

One of Wendy's primary things to do now is to study the Sears Christmas catalog.  She has probably looked at it a thousand times already.  I don't know if it will last until Christmas or not.  She is really excited about Christmas and Santa Claus and all that good stuff.

The weather is getting cold here.  Yesterday it got down to 16ยบ.  We have this channel on cable TV that tells the temperature all the time and also gives the temperature with the wind chill factor.  It is neat except sometimes it makes it seem even colder.  We don't have free heat like we did last winter so we are keeping the heat lower.  Of course we are gone all day long so can keep it cool then and we have an electric blanket that Mom & Dad gave us to keep us warm at night.  That sure comes in handy.

My new job is going real well.  Did I tell you that I get a bonus?  I get 2½% of everything they take in over 9000/month as that is what they need to break even.  So far this month we have taken in $13,400 ($110 bonus) and there is still a week to go!  Our property tax bill is due in November so that will help alot!

Better go.  Hope all is well with you.  Write soon!

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1970 Roberta's Letter -Oct.22

Oct 22, 1970

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for your letter today.  I got the Hally's Bible Handbook.  Thanks alot for mailing it to me.  I've still got to buy the dictionary yet.

Too bad about you all being sick -- especially Daddy.  Now, I guess Daddy is the only one sick, right?  But you had to have shots.

John, did you have fun at the boy scout camporee?

All we hear about here is "Kent State".  On every news there is something about Kent State or the Ohio National Guard.  It sometimes makes me think I'm in OHIO!!

It has been raining since Friday.  Today it started sleeting.  I'm not kidding.  You wouldn't believe it.  Next year I'm going to Florida to school -- down there I could at least get a sun-tan!!

We are now in the 8th chapter of Mark.  We had a test Wednesday covering the first 7 chapters.  The Bible courses here are hard.  Also expensive!

Sociology is going fine.We got our new teacher from Warren-Pacific College.  I guess he teaches College Sociology there too.  We won't be having any tests in Sociology.  He told us that today.  Instead we would have "papers" to write instead.  I'm not too sure about that  I guess I'd much rather write a paper than take a test.

I don't think I'm going to get a typewriter.  Pam has got one and I use it when I need it.

That's too bad about Jennifer Gano.  I didn't know anything about it.

How's Serena & Mary Virginia doing raking the leaves???

I hear the donuts went up in the J&W.  Are they 90¢  per dozen now?  Oh, I guess you all would have gotten them cheaper for a church group.

I can't wait till the week-end.  Right now I plan to dress for winter & go out Saturday looking for a job.  I'd like to find the person who told me it never gets below 65ยบ here.  Yesterday it was down to the low 30's.  But now at the same time it was raining.  But today it was sleet!

Governor Tom McCall is a Republican.

I'll enclose a page that I've gotten from a "Crescent" [George Fox College Newspaper]  It's an old one -- last years.  They come out every two weeks.  Please notice the snow.  I'm giving it a week to snow.  Ugh.

I hope I can get everything in one envelope.  You won't believe this -- I've already run out of stamps.  (first roll)  I had a funny feeling I would need the 2nd roll.

Well, I've got to go now.  Do hope you feel better Dad.  Hope you have a nice birthday.

Love,
Roberta

Thanks again for mailing the Bible Handbook.

Hi!  Glad to get your letter, hope Dad is better, and no one else sick. [According to a note on a hotel invoice dated Oct. 23, 1970, Dad was diagnosed with hepatitis and they all got shots.]   Things are going well here.  I've been spending hours reading Faust -- I really like it.  I had a new idea for an SIP [Senior Independent Project] -- doing a concordance of Faust.  I'm enthused but haven't talked to anyone yet.  I will be here in Kal. though.  I'm thinking of changing my residence, so in case I went to library school here next year.  Dick is also considering library school among other things.  I have a job in library here for vacation but am still planning to be home (NV) for Christmas.  Did you get my long epistle of last week?

Your happy, healthy
daughter & sister, Catherine

1980 Roberta's letter to Grandma -Oct.21

Tuesday Evening
5:30 pm --
10-21-80]

Dear Grandma,

I'm wondering if you are "glued" to your T.V. watching the World Series?  Of course Marion has got it on and isn't missing a minute of it!

Today was a big day at work -- we had Candidates Day -- all these political speeches -- etc.  Either the people really enjoyed it -- or they sat there & acted very bored.  The only time when everyone would listen is when they were talking about Social Security or Medicare!!

Our cool weather is still w/ us -- this electric bill should be pretty cheap -- with/out the air conditioner or the furnace going.  I've been wearing my thermal underwear in the mornings going to work.

The lady next door finally is getting moved in today.  Looks like she is going to have to have a garage sale.  I was out with dear Buffy & was talking to her daughter.  All her house is full of furniture & her garage is about full w/ furniture -- etc.

The afternoon you left I got my permanent  -- my hair now is really curly!!  I've very happy the way it turned out.  Now Marian says she might get a curly permanent -- but I'll believe that when I see it!!!

Saturday was sure a busy day for me at the flower shop.  In fact I didn't get everything done so Harry -- the owner of the shop wanted to know if I would like to do what I could at home.  So I worked on it about 2 hours Sunday night & the same last night.

We are all caught up with the paperwork out at the center -- now to just keep it up on a daily basis!  And hopefully they won't come up with anything else for us to keep track of!!!

I got both your card & the folks letter in today's mail -- I'm glad that you had a good trip back despite the rough ride!!  And that Joe was able to meet you at the airport.  Did you recognize him right away?  Sounds like you all have been "on-the-go" --

Grandma, Thanks again for the enjoyable trip to Oregon -- and I'm so glad you had the time here too.  We (including Buffy) sure enjoyed having you!!  It's not too early now to plan on coming next October!!

STAY WARM!

Love,
Roberta

1970 Roberta's Letter -Oct.21

 Oct 21, 1970

Dear Family,

This is some old paper that my roommate was going to throw away.  Now, I know that makes you feel good.  It's only  11  years old!

I'm doing good in all my classes so far.  We got a new sociology teacher - the other one had a heart attack.

It has been raining for three days now.  I guess it will quit in April.  Pam told me it only happens once a year -- but it lats all year.  She said last year it was nice from 2 to 4 P.M. one Thursday last year.

I'll put in a typical English assignment.  So far I've got about a 94% average.  Pretty good, huh?  Beginners luck!  If you look at #2 -- Phyllis comment -- well she is my English teacher.  She used to be a missionary in South America.

I'm still not working.  The woman at the restaurant told me she had no openings right now.  I made two trips to see her Saturday.  I finally got her at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night.  Why didn't she tell me that last week?

Over the weekend -- the school had a party.   I can't remember the name of the place but it was a state park.  It was really quite nice -- about 15 miles from Newberg.

Did you know the largest continuous speech in history was that of Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon in 1953.  It lated 22 hours and 26 minutes!!  [According to Wikipedia, this was a Senate filibuster protesting the Submerged Lands Act, but his record was surpassed by Strom Thurmond with a filibuster of 24 hours and 18 minutes in opposition of the 1957 Civil Rights Act.  Another interesting fact about Morse, who served as Senator from Oregon 1945-1969, originally elected as a Republican, switched to being Independent in 1952 and then to Democrat in 1955.]

Well.  Will write you all more when I hear from you.  How's Grandma?

Love,
Bert

P.S. Maybe you better return my Eng. papers -- I may need them later.

1980 Family Letter -Oct.18

Saturday --
October 18, 1980
Dearest Family,

It is now 7:20 AM and Dad and Joe just left for the Cincinnati airport where Joe is getting a plane for Salt Lake City (via Atlanta).  We have had a nice visit with him -- glad to have him stay with us -- seemed strange without his parents but flying is so much easier and he can do so much more in the short time he does have.  It worked out well that he came the day before Grandma did for he was able to meet her after having spent time at the Cincinnati Art Museum and visiting Melissa Holbrook Teedtman too.

Grandma really enjoyed her trip and got home in good shape -- we sat and talked with her til long after 11 PM Thursday night (she slept til 9 Friday morning).  We did appreciate the pictures, cantaloupes, raisins, cookies, etc. that she brought back with her.  She came up for lunch yesterday and then we had home-made ice cream last night before MV had to take off for the football game to be played at Waynesville.  (They lost 33-0 -- both teams were tied for 1st place.)  We had planned to go but it poured while we were in Wilmington so decided against it -- Joe had a cold that seems to be aggravated in the evening.  Dad had a meeting at 7PM so we went to visit Elizabeth Johnson & had planned to go on from there but just too wet.  We are strictly dry weather fans -- and not to good of ones at that.

Elizabeth really appreciated her card from you, Roberta and shared it with us.  She just got back from Mackinac Island and Canada briefly having gone on a trip with the Blanchester Senior Citizens and enjoyed it immensely.

I had planned to go with Dad to see Joe off but Dad didn't think that was necessary for me to do this morning and thought we had better get a letter of to you all.  MV leaves at 11:30 today for a band contest at Miami Trace this afternoon and evening.  We plan to go up there later on.

Heard some sad news Thursday -- Joellen Streber hasn't been too well and went in the hospital where they found she had a massive brain tumor which they can't do anything about and told them it was just a matter of days.  Her sister Janet died of cancer just two years ago before Christmas.  Her son, Jeff had been substituting for her since Tuesday (she taught Monday til Wilma took her home).

I saw Cathy Dean Fox recently and she said she and her husband are planning on building a log house on Powell Road (on foundation or near the Clifford Powell's home near the Robert Linkharts.  She asked to be remembered to you, Serena.  His family live just around the corner on Bernard Road [? mostly unreadable as the line is typed over by the next line.]

Joe told us that he is planning on selling his Trans Am and getting a Mazda.  One time the police stopped him and wanted him to take the Eagle inscription off of the hood.  He said no one observes the traffic signs.  Going to Cincy this morning was easy as virtually no traffic, we made the 60 miles in 1⅓ hours.  Did stop at Blanchester CCNB office, where Tom Brumley took me on a tour (my first one).  As Tom said it should be nice for $800,000.  John, he also mentioned what a good bank Park National was and how their officers were active in the Ohio Bankers Assn.  The bank has a community room with a very nice kitchen.

Worked over the garden earlier in the week, want to do better in 1981 in getting out an early garden than this year.  Our raspberries and the tomatoes next to the house are still growing.  The three of us went to our quarterly conference Thursday night.  (The D.S.'s wife is M.V.'s piano teacher).  We were hosts for the Martinsville and N.V. churches.  Had another call from Korea -- still trying to master the red tape to get Mie Young out of Korea.  Might be a good plot for a book.  Your mother went to the library meeting in Dayton last Monday and brought home some books to keep us out of mischief.

Love, Dad

1980 Catherine's postcard to MV -Oct.18

10/18/80

Hi!  We appreciated your thinking of Wendy on her Birthday.  She is busy now studying the Sears Christmas catalog.  She says Santa Claus is going to bring her lots of presents.  How is EC's football team doing?  Do you go to all the games?  Write to us!

1970 Roberta's Postcard -Oct.17

Oct. 17, 1970
Dear Family,
Thanks alot for your post-card today.  I'm glad to hear that you'll be mailing a copy of Halley's Handbook.  Thanks!

I just got back from walking downtown to see about my job.  A girl told me to come back tonight about 8:00 to see the woman.

I hope daddy feels alot better.

We all had a real good time last night in Portland.  W didn't go ice-skating -- too expensive to rent skates, etc.

I'm not sure about the peoples name in Leesburg.  If I see her again I'll ask her.

Do write and hope you all are fine.
Love,
Bert

1970 Catherine's Letter -Oct.15

October 15, 1970
5 PM

Dear Mom, Dad, Serena, John, and Mary,

Dick is out playing football so I thought I would write you all a letter.  I better type fast because he will be back soon to go to dinner and I will never get this finished because I am going to a special class after dinner.  Dr. Fugate, the head of the German dept. and the Foreign Study Program just got back form Europe and he is having "us" (the majors and other interested people of whom there aren't too many) over to his house so that we can read Faust together.  It will probably be a weekly sort of thing until the end of the quarter.  We're all supposed to have the first part of it read by tonight, that's about half the book.  I read it all over vacation and I guess one other guy did but no one else seems to have it done yet.  It will probably end up with Dr. Fugate telling us about everything anyway.  Education is supposedly, or at should be theoretically getting away from the system of the teacher simply telling and the students doing nothing but absorbing.  However with Dr. Fugate I do alot of listening and absorbing.  If possible, I'd like to graduate, and learning the stuff he has to tell is a definite requisite.

Learning class is like the total opposite.  The emphasis is on the experiential approach to learning.  We are reading one book which is all about the different theories of learning, some get into stimulus response type stuff, while others concentrate on the thought and mind processes.  I don't get too thrilled by theories but the rest of the class is more geared to personal and group observations.  We are divided into groups of about seven people and the whole purpose of the group is to study the development of the group and the individuals in it.  We meet twice a week in the small groups and twice a week as a whole class.  Every Friday we have to hand in a journal about our personal observations or just about anything that seems especially pertinent.  I just finished mine for this week before I began this letter.  I wrote it on how my emotional mood had altered during the week and what I thought had changed it: i.e. health, friends, school work, lack of motivation, etc.  I had a really bad cold the beginning of the week but it is pretty much gone.

There was a little excitement here on Tuesday and yesterday.  Dr. Moltmann, a German theologian has been here speaking this week and on Tuesday night the school got three telephone calls saying there was a bomb in the chapel where he was going to speak.  Lots of policemen with flashlights were on the scene and although nothing was found they moved the 600 people or so who had gathered in the chapel over to the Fine Arts building.  They kept the building under "tight security" for a24 hours and last night Dr. Moltmann did speak in the chapel although there weren't quite as many people.  Dr. Chen (acting pres. of K. while Dr. Hicks is recovering from his stroke or whatever) announced all about the bomb scares which was the first official announcement of such although the rumors had been thick.  He also said that anyone should feel free to leave if hey felt so inclined because they were remaining at their own risk.  Not too many seemed to realize how true that is.

I seem to have lost Roberta's address already.  I got some 5¢ stamps to send her a card so try the address again and maybe I can get the two connected.  I also got a letter from Patty Walker this week which I hope to answer soon but you can acknowledge my receipt of it if you see any of the Walker clan.  Sue Steusloff Durham and her husband bought a four bedroom house in Portland.  Right now all they have is a dog but I think the baby is due in about two weeks.  Gee, it almost makes me fell like an aunt.

Speaking of aunts, Dick's Mom and aunt went down to Tennessee this week for sort of a vacation.  We went out driving last weekend because the weather was beautiful and the tress all pretty color.

Thanks for checking on the VW at Tolles'.  It sounds a bit stiff to me.  There were some new ads in the paper last night so the possibilities certainly aren't exhausted.  maybe as i gets closer to winter people will be willing to take even less money for their camping stuff.

Is Dad home from New York yet? I envy you with all those apples.  I have been buying four pound bags of Jonathons or Macintosh at Thrifty Acres.  That costs me about 49¢ per 4# bag which is definitely cheaper than 12¢ an apple at the snack bar.

It is amazing how much different I feel being here as a senior than I did as a freshman or sophomore.  Seeing all the freshman makes me really aware of it.  This has now become very much "home:, tied up with friends, responsibilities, and just plain living.  I can remember when I used to have feelings like I just had to get out of the dorm or I'd go crazy or get away from Kalamazoo awhile.  But now my attitude seems to be more of, Why should I get away?  I live here.  I like it here.  Sometimes I get sort of down thinking about taking senior comps. and such in order to be able to graduate.  I have to pass them.  But I keep impressing on myself that if I work reasonably hard between then and now, there is no reason to get myself upset -- I either pass or I don't.  If I do, tremendous.  If I don't, I can't see that it will ruin my life.

Too bad about the Reds.  I was rooting for them!

Love
Catherine

1980 Catherine's Letter to G'ma -Oct.14

Tuesday, October 14, 1980

Dear Grandma,

Hi!  It is strange to think that as I write this letter you are in Mesa, with Roberta, but by the time it arrives in Ohio you will be there waiting for it!

We were sure glad you and Roberta were able to visit us.  I hope you had a good time.  We certainly appreciated seeing you and thanks for the winter accessories for Wendy and the money for us.  We thought we might use it to buy the foam for the back of the truck that I checked on that day we were in Bend.  We have been wanting to get that for quite awhile.

It has been even colder here since you left.  Today the high was in the 40's and tonight it is to get down into the 20's.  Brrr!  Roberta would never be able to stand it.  Wendy and I wore our mittens when we walked today.

This letter from John arrived today and I thought I would enclose it since it is written to you also.  You'll have to tell him to send us a picture of their house.  We would like to see what it looks like.

And be sure and say hello to Joe for us.  Too bad he won't be making the western circuit this year.  We would have liked to see him.

Hope your trip home went smoothly.  We are eating the apples!

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

P.S. We will send you some pictures after we get them developed.  We have a few more to take first!

1970 Roberta's letter -Oct.14

Oct 14,
1970
Dear Family,

Thanks alot for your letter today.  I'm getting along fine.  I especially like my Eng. class.  There are only 10 students in it.  For tomorrow we have to write a 2 page conversation between an educated man and an uneducated man.

There is a public library in Newberg.  I hear it is small.  There is a nice "Herbert Hoover" park about 3 blocks from the school.  It is across from his house.  Or what ever it is called.

I was in Dave Dennis's place myself.  You pay for all that high class.

I still haven't gotten a call from the lady downtown about my job.  She said she would want me this weekend but told me she would call me about my hours.  I'm going to call her tomorrow.

OH.  I have a chance to go to Alaska over Christmas.  The school is having a bus go up to work in an Indian Reservation.  It's a Christian Service Deal.  I want to find out more about it.  Yes??

That was quite a thing about Wayne Ames.

OH.  I've checked about a type-writer.  Now, a downtown office store has an Olympian type writer that I can rent for $6.00 a month.  Three months for $18.00.  At the end of 3 months if I decide I ant to buy it the $18.00 will go off the price.  It's made out of spring steel -- something like that!  The lady told me they were alot better than a Smith-Corona.  The new Olympian cost about $115.00.

The bank is about 8 blocks from the campus.  Are Serena's feet OK now?  I'm planning on buying myself a pair of "foot thrills" the shoe like I wore while working at J&W.  (Brown -- tie-up.)

Pam and I are on a diet.  We are going to start drinking 2 oz. of blackstrap molasses, 8 oz. of water, and 2 oz. of real lemon juice for supper.  I got a ¼ of a cup measurer thing last night.  That's an awfully lot of black-strap molasses!  ¼ cup!

The official diet is to drink 6 to 12 of those mixtures a day, but eat nothing.  We couldn't do that!

I've had a very nice letter from Rev. Reece, day before yesterday.

That was something about Jack Matson.  I can just hear those "Welk Ladies" talking about it all.

OH by the way I would appreciate it if Daddy could get Betty Wait's             address.  JoAnn Smith knows it -- I'm pretty sure.  I meant to get it before I left.

Well.  Do write.

Let me know if you know anyone who would like to buy a $8.25 Fundamentals of Normal Nutrition book,  How about Catherine?

Love,
Roberta

1980 Catherine's Letter -Oct.14

Tuesday, October 14, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, & Mary,

Hi!  I can't believe how quickly this fall seems to be going by.  We sure enjoyed having Roberta and Grandma here.  A letter came today from John which was meant for Roberta & Grandma too so I will send it on in the next day or two.

We ate at the Tumalo Emporium on Sunday with Roberta and Grandma.  Do you remember eating there after our trip to Eugene in 1979?  Grandma should be able to give you other details of the highlights of her trip to Madras!  Wendy enjoyed having them here too.  She is turning into a regular chatter-box.  Perhaps it was the influence of having Roberta here.  They kept playing a game where Roberta was "Wendy Jean" and Wendy was "Aunt Roberta".

Tonight before Wendy went to bed she gave me a long discourse on Santa Claus and Christmas.  She told me she wants butter, sugar, toys and clothes for Christmas.  At least three of the four are very practical.

My job is going really well.  I like it about 200% better than the Court House and I didn't dislike the Court House.  I think I mentioned that I get a bonus if they take in over $9000/month. -- 2½% of everything over $9000.  As of today we had taken in $7500 so I am in hopes of getting a big bonus!  It gives me incentive to keep on those slow accounts and to keep caught up on the insurance work so the money will keep pouring in!   That was a good article in The Wall St. Journal.  I went up to Citizen's Bank on Saturday morning and asked if I could copy the article so I could take it to work.  They said I might as well take the paper as they wouldn't need it!  I thought someone like Dad wouldn't appreciate it being gone if they came into read it but I took it anyway!

We have been watching all the baseball games on TV with the playoffs and now the World Series.  Are you following them at all?  And of course there is always the election news.  Oh yes, I wanted to tell you we got the Natl Geog. on the 2nd of the month!

Enjoyed Mary's "Amazing Grace" concert!

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1970 Roberta's Letter to John -Oct.11

 Oct. 11, 1970

Dear John,

Thanks alot for your letter yesterday.  I'm glad you had such a nice birthday.

Yesterday Pam and I went out job-hunting.  Pam is a friend of mine, loud & noisy just like me.  We left at 8:30 and got back about 11:00.  Then we left again after lunch and stayed out till about 3:00.  I've got a job at a real fancy, classy restaurant.  I'll be working probably on Saturday & Sundays and 1 evening per week.  A lady is to call me about the hours.

I've also got a chance at two other jobs.  I'm to go back there and see but if & since I got the job at Bowman's I won't go back unless the lady doesn't call me.

The lady told me I had to have a uniform, she is very picky.  No perfume she says some customers don't like that, etc. etc.

I found a "stamp" paper the other day so I cut some articles out of it that I thought you might like.

I'm glad you finally got your t-shirt.  I thought it would take awhile before you would get it.

Well, be sure and write soon.  Tell everyone I said hello.

Love,
Roberta
