1949 Jean's Letter -Feb.4

$150 for the Doctor, and $41.50 for 9-10 days in the hospital.

Friday
February 4, 1949
Dearest Mother and Daddy,

I will soon have been here a week – officially at 4:00 AM tomorrow morning but they keep you so busy it seems like only a couple of days.

We've received the card you addressed for Mr. & Mrs. Yount and many others – Cousin Maude, Janine [or Jeanne?], Mary & Bill, Miss Miller, Miss Grout (with notes added from 4 other librarians of East Cleve.), Mrs. McGonagle and others.  Then we both have been getting phone calls – Louise Gilmore, Jean Keil Walker, Mrs. McGonagle, Jeanne Campbell and others ––

Laura Uible called and suggested several doctors – one woman doctor very near us.  I told Dr. Weir and he called her this afternoon & she said she'd be out tomorrow morning to look at the baby.  She's not a pediatrician but I know that she's the same one that Norma Anderson (who lives across the hall from us with the 6 mo. old baby) goes to.

It's now Saturday evening & almost time for visitors (6:30-8:00).  I've felt so neglectful about not writing but the morning is spent with breakfast, feeding and then bathing – By that time, lunch is ready, then feeding time again, then rest period & we're supposed to spend two or three hours flat on our backs with the lamp reflector on our stitches.  Then 4:30 dinner & 5 the babies come in.  Tonight they were quite short-staffed so we were even later.

The doctor (pediatrician from West side ) didn't get in but no doubt will appear tomorrow.

My new roommate is awfully nice – she had a boy last Wednesday – already has a four year old girl so has given me many pointers on raising a child – good, practical advice.  It so happens that she lives on Henderson Road – not far from Mr. McGonagle.  She knows her by sight but not personally.

Some woman from the First Baptist Church called me this afternoon  – Dr. Phillips had told her I had a new baby.  Jeanne Campbell also called – I had asked her to buy me two nursing brassieres and  . . .

Catherine is gaining it seems & right now I think I'll be able to nurse her entirely as we never use the bottle they bring in.  The nurse says she's so sensitive – doesn't cry but whimpers unless she is handled just so-so.

Of course I'm anxious to get home to have a real family reunion.  Hope you'll get over to see us as soon as you can.

Love,
Jean, Harold and
Catherine

1949 - Jean's missing pages -Feb.1

In the letter posted a few days ago from Jean to her parents, there seemed to be a page missing.  Indeed, there were three pages missing, and now more details on the first days of parenting in 1949 Cleveland.

[the following is pages 2-4 of a six-page letter from Jean to her parents on February 1, 1949.]

. . . Her nails are long and well shaped  but they wear those shirts with closed hands so you can't tell too much about them.

Dr. Weir said I got along fine & he wished all his patients were as quiet & good, etc.  I don't know whether Harold told you all the gory details.  Perhaps he knows those better than I do.

I had been feeling fine with the exception of the "showing" which started about Wednesday night but had no real cramps or pains until about 1:15 Saturday morning & they seemed to get worse but were at irregular times – sometimes 30 minutes apart and sometimes 8-10.  Finally we decided it best to call Dr. Weir so he said start right away for the hospital.  He would call and make all the necessary arrangements.

Of course, it had begun to snow and we could hear cars sliding and skidding on the street by our building.  We left about 3:30 AM and got to the hospital by 4:00 with only one major pain along the way.

They sent me up to labor-delivery room as soon as I got in and began to time my pains but kept saying I'd have to have harder & stronger ones before they'd be considered.  After an enema was over, they let Harold come up – about 5:00 (in the meantime he was supposedly studying for an exam just 3 hours later).  Finally when I was hardly conscious any longer he left & the next thing I knew it was 12:00 & Harold was telling me we had a little girl 7 lbs 1 oz at 8:55 AM.  Thinking he was teasing about the girl I wouldn't believe him but then the nurse told him he could see the baby on the way out & they showed her to me afterwards.

Later when I had been taken downstairs to my room, they brought her in & fully undressed her showing she was a good healthy specimen.  Dr. Weir came later & said all was fine & everything had gone very well – much faster than he had expected.

Harold came over at 6:00 for visiting hours and Jeanne Campbell came somewhat later & stayed until 8:00.  I was feeling very well by then & glad it was all over.  Some flowers – very pretty daffodils arrived earlier in the afternoon from Jeanne, Ruth and Ellen.

That night (Saturday) they brought the baby in and . . . .

1949 Jean's Letter -Feb.1

Tuesday morning
February 1, 1949
Dearest Mother and Daddy,

It was nice of you to call last night and I feel quite ashamed for not having written to you sooner.  We really are kept very busy.

Its hard to believe that we are now Mama and Daddy but we do have a darling little girl.  Her face is filling out more & more and doesn't have so much of that new born look.  Her face is round like mine with a real pug nose and plenty of soft black hair.  Her features are quite delicate – ears – small close to her head – dark eyes and right now not much of any chin but I hope that fills out better later.

Her legs are on the thin side and has long narrow feet.  Her nails are long and well shaped but they wear those shirts with . . . .

. . . . put her at the breast.  The milk has just begun to come today though.  Each time she comes in, every 4 hours, she is usually sound asleep & soon becomes that way & refuses to be wakened.  She doesn't seem to be under nourished though & will no doubt make up for lost time when she arrives home.

The days have just flown by – in fact I can't account for each one.  They got me up for awhile on Sunday and yesterday they let me go to the bathroom by myself having been up twice during the day. And now I'm writing in the chair.

The girl who is in the room with me has been quite uncomfortable as they gave her a spinal anesthetic and as a result she has had quite severe headaches.  She is only 19 – had a baby boy & was quite set on having a girl but all is well that way now.

There seems so much to tell but you must come over as soon as the weather clears for we are so proud of our little family.  No doubt I'll stay at least nine days in the hospital (that's Monday – the day of Harold's last exam).  Perhaps things have worked out best that Harold can have the house to himself to study now except he has a long way to come every evening.

Thanks for your call & I'll be writing more details soon again.

Love,
Jean, Harold and Catherine

[written on the margins]
Hope you like the name "Catherine" – it was quite on the spur of the moment but pleases both of us.

Received your letter – thanks too for the money.  In case you get to Pgh. we could use a sweater & bonnet as I will need those to wear home from the hosp. according to a letter they send around.

1976 Roberta's Injury & letter to MV -Oct.17

October 17, 1976

Dear Mary Virginia,

Hi!  How is everything?  Now that I can't play cards (actually I can still play – just can't shuffle) I should be able to get all kinds of letters out now – but you should feel privileged – you're the 1st one!

You would laugh if you saw my left hand now – around the thumb there is a piece of metal  with foam rubber type padding.  It's about 3 times bigger than the size it should be.  At least I'm thankful it's my left hand.

Yesterday I had my appointment w/ the man that does the hiring for McDonalds – He said I would have to go to L.A. for 2 weeks training at their expense – I said that would be ok.  He also said that there would be another interview – probably mid November.  He asked about my thumb and wanted to know if I was accident prone.

  1. Yesterday afternoon I had 2 telephone calls about jobs – one as a waitress, the other one working in the office of an insulating company.  I have interviews w/ them tomorrow & Tuesday.  I've got a feeling that neither of them will be wild of a 9 fingered employee!

Actually the job I hope to get – is the one at Hungry Years Soup Kitchen – they have a really neat salad bar – w/ mushrooms cauliflower, broccoli, etc. etc. in it – plus they make homemade soups.  The only thing that bothers me about them is that they serve beer & wine' and I'd just as soon not work in a place that does.  It is fixed up really nice – old time music box, very old fashioned.

The hours are pretty good – and the people that own it have big plans – I told them when they open up one in Hawaii, I'd like to be transferred!

I'd like you to do me a big favor – somewhere up in the 2nd floor of the factory is a cook-book called "Dieters Gourmet" cook-book.  It is paperback – would you send that to me?  Thanks!  Also if you see my tapes – which should be in my room in a box.  And, last request – if you see some Avon perfume sticks – please enclose them.  I want to send them to India as gifts.

Catherine & I had a good laugh about Mares – Budsy is going to have competition now – but I'm sure the grandparents can handle it.  [Marianne must have announced her pregnancy – Wesley was born in May 1977.]

When do you get off for Christmas?

Catherine, Gerry & Dee-Dee went ice skating yesterday.  They wanted me to go – but I figured I better watch my steps for awhile.  (like adjusting my windows – actually I was on my bed when the accident happened.)

I'm enclosing a little present I meant to send back w/ G'ma – my way of saying "Aloha" – you would like Hawaii – and Ito would have you in stitches – I'm glad John wasn't there – I had a hard time keeping serious myself.  He kept asking if I felt at home – and always saying – you like it – keep it.  It's yours.

I know you're busy w/ T.V. & all  but write when you can – and really appreciate your sending my things.

Love,
Berta

1975 Roberta's Letter & Hospital Medical Report -Dec.16

December 16, 1975

Dear Family,

Alot has happened since I wrote you yesterday morning.  When the girls came to see me they gave me the news that the 1st train I could get would be on December 27th!   Right after they left I contacted the Church Office to confirm my flight on the 20th.  At 1:30 I found out that the 1st flight to Bombay I could get would be after Christmas.  Then the chaplain came in to see me & I was telling him my situation & how I wanted to spend Christmas w/ my friend in Bombay.  Well he thought he knew someone that would be able to help me.  So he got busy & about 3:30 p.m. I was told that I had a reservation to leave this morning to Bombay.  I'm up in the air now – its all happened so quick its hard to believe it!  Yesterday afternoon they let me leave the hospital to go to the hostel – settle up my account & pack my things – I had to be back by supper.

This morning I got dismissed from the hospital q/ a clean bill of health.  Right now I'm tired but that is to be expected.  For  7  days I lay in a bed!  I know I'll have to take it easy for awhile – they kept telling me that this morning.

My flight left at 10:45 – at 8:30 three girls from the hostel came to go w/me to the airport.  As we were standing on the street (trying to catch a taxi) just outside the hospital one of the doctors came along that worked in the clinic.  He was on his way to the airport to pick up someone & would we like a ride.  We all piled in.  It took 50 minutes so we save alot of $.  The girls were able to see me off.  I had a $91.00 bill to pay at the hospital  $72.00 – plane ticket (WOW - but I'm enjoying every minute of it.)  $17.00 hospital bill, and the rest for telegrams I had sent out – I hope to be met today but I don't know - - - - -

In a way I hated to leave Calcutta today – there were some things I had hoped to do this last week – but I knew I didn't want to be there another week & a half.  I'll add a note when I get to Bombay – the Hollywood of INDIA!

I like Bombay – so clean.  My friends met me at the airport – now at there house.  Got letter from Ruth Shoemaker ––

Good flight here & so glad I'm here.

Love, Roberta

1975 Roberta's India Letter -Dec.15

December 15, 1975
Dear Family,

Here it is December 15th and I'm still in Calcutta – you must think I like it alot here.  I'll explain the events of the last week.  On Monday I was on my way to the post office to mail your letter w/ 2 other girls.  Before I got down to the street I started feeling very sick I went back upstairs and slept most of the day.  That night the Capt. (woman in charge of hotel) came in & took my temperature – it was 103º but I was freezing cold.  Tuesday afternoon I was taken to a doctor down the street.  He told me I had a temperature (which I already knew) & to stay in bed. (which was all I felt like doing.)_  He charge me 30 Rupees which is very high as to Indian standards.

Wednesday I was no better so they took me to another Doctor.  He was much more helpful & only charged me 6 Rupees.  (Both doctors had given me medicine – the 1st cost 3 Rupees; the 2nd 8 Rupees.)

On Thursday I still had a temperature of 1043º so upon the advice of the Capt. and because I felt very sick I came to the Assembly of God Mission Hospital.  Since I've been here my temperature has gone down – in fact this morning it finally hit 98.6º  I hope to be out tomorrow.  It's a small hospital only 12 beds.  All are full.  They also operate a Doctors clinic.  The nurses, aides, etc. have been very good to me.  A doctor has come in 3 times a day to see me since I've been in.  At 1st all I ate was toast & tea but now I'm eating bland Indian food.  For the bed, meals & doctor call I'm charged 15 Rupees a day – that is $1.88!!  My medicine will be extra, it might be expensive but even so I will still come out 'cheap'!

My fever was caused by some of the greedy bugs that bit me in Puri.  The 1st thing I'm going to do before I got South is to buy a mosquito net!  Calcutta has alot of crawly bugs but none of the flying biting kind.

On Wednesday the girls at the hotel cancelled my train reservation to Bombay – which almost killed me as I had wanted to be well enough to make the trip.  I only lost about 80¢ by cancelling.

I sent my friends a telegram Thurs. morning simply saying – SICK. ARRIVAL DELAYED.  I can be very brief when I pay by the letter!

That night a telegram came back from them saying to get better fast & to fly to Bombay.  Which I had decided to do already (both get better & fly!)  It's going to cost alot more than riding the train 2nd class but it will be worth every petty.  It's a 2 hour flight.  (40 hours by TRAIN!)

The girls at the hostel have come in groups to see me – morning, afternoon & evening.  They say their school is not far from here.  I've had more company here than all the other patients put together – And I'm the only "foreigner" here.  I have flowers on my table & cards also.  It's not that I've been totally neglected!

Please do not tell anyone I've been sick.  Especially Grandma, the Hortons & Dr. Otterland.  It would give Uncle Bill & Dr. Otterland to much satisfaction; and it would just worry Grandma.

I've been in India – now over a month & have enjoyed myself – except for the last few days.  I miss some of the luxuries & conveniences I'm used to.  I get tired of washing out my clothes by hand.  Twice I sent out to be washed – both times they came back in alot worse shape.  I don't know how much longer I'll be here in India – I'll just play it by ear.  Right now I want to go to Bombay very bad.  I've told the nurse to make reservations for me on Tuesday night – I hope I can them.

Please take out a health insurance policy on me – should I come down w/some strange disease when I get back.  I'm saying this as a precaution – because I've heard of it happening some – not because I plan to be sick.

Because of the price & the benefits it would be nice to get a deal through the shop.

It should be about Christmas time by the time you get this.  I'm sorry this news has to hit you at this time.  But I assure you at Christmas I'll be in Bombay in excellent health enjoying myself.

I hope each one of you have a nice Christmas.  Serena I'm especially sorry I'll miss seeing you as I haven't seen you since ?

I know JB & Mary Va are well into it.  John you could do me a favor – put the chrome piece on the Buick.  I want to keep the car in Top Condition inside & out.  I have the feeling it will be like Ruth Shoemaker's "Chevy."

I don't think I've mentioned before but it is quite the expected to have 3, 4 or 5 power failures in Calcutta in a week's time.  Sometimes they are in the middle of the day – just for a few hours – other times it starts about 8:00 pm and lasts till early morning ª4:00-4:00 am).  The worst part of it is that the trams also stop.  They block traffic in the worst ways possible.  Horns blow – people shout at each other – it is quite a circus.  Some say the blackouts are on purpose – just to conserve energy  When they do happen you can see little fires burning up & down all the streets.  That have been 2 since I've been here (in the hospital).

I wish you all a Merry Christmas!  However you celebrate it.  Since I've been here I've been listening to Christmas Carols and there are some small decorations in the hall.  The chaplain has been very nice – he is from Vancouver, Canada.  He has sent me in books, etc.

Since the mail won't go out today I'll wait & add more later.

Also John – as the year comes to a close my thoughts turn to you and the Internal Revenue.  I trust I can count on you again this year as in years passed.

It's 8:30 AM – the Dr. was just in – I also got the news that the 1st flight to Bombay that I can get is December 20th!  So now my mind is messed up as to what to do.  As to the trains – you have to reserve in person – I might try to go 1st class – it is not at all bad.

The man across from me is dying –I didn't think he would live this long.  I get to hear all the noises & conversations as instead of doors there are curtain type doors – Red & White check material.  Also the walls between the rooms don't go all the way up – whatever happens – everyone hears it.  I'm the only young one here.  Yesterday I got up & sat out in the sun awhile – it felt so good because except when I was taken to the Drs & here I had not been outside since the following Sunday!

Right now I feel better than I've felt since I left home – I've been eating 3 square meals a day.  I get hot tea when I wake up – served in bed.  I also get it w/ crackers in the afternoon.  At night before I got to bed I get a glass of hot milk.  My temperature is still normal – they just want to "watch" me another day!

Jacy (Tracy?) and the girls are here so will mail this by them.

Man died across the way.

More details ––

Will write you in Bombay ––

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Love, Roberta

1974 GHU Letter -Apr.8

Note from Roberta added at the bottom of the back page is also transcribed below.  The date is inferred from the envelope which is postmarked 8 Apr 1974, and a look at the April 1974 calendar which indicates April 8, 1974 was a Monday.  Roberta must have made a trip to the post office after the letter was written to have it be postmarked the same day.  The envelope has an 8¢ Eisenhower stamp and a 2¢ Frank Lloyd Wright stamp attached for those of you interested in the philatelic information.

[4/8/74]
Mon. evening
Dear Family –

Received your letter to-day.  I sure am sorry about the check & of course will wonder what happened to it & hope no one tries to cash in on it.  I had hoped that some one might find it & return to me, but no luck so far.  In the near future will send you a duplicate for the same amount.

Looks as if the church has a problem to raise that given amount but I guess if we all give "generously" it can be met.  Will try to give my share when I get home.  Right now I am getting papers ready to send out to my Dr. & hospital bills paid by medicare Ins. Total about $1700.00  It is a crime the way they charge, but what can a person do but go along.  I know that my right foot is better but my left is not doing so well.  At least I went to church service Sun. & was able to wear my shoes.  Cris took me & we used the wheel chair.  I want to go to Sun school & service next Sun. if all is well.

The Lions have their pancake day at the th Park but Mary & I don't plan to go as there will be salt in everything & Mary doesn't like pancakes anyway.  Roberta will be home for the store closes for Easter.

I had Cris to order my plane ticket Sat. for the 27th so hope you can meet me in Cin. that evening Harold I am not sure of the time Harold but I believe it is 5:35 P.M.  Will let you know later.  I wrote to Mrs. Wilson to day hoping she will open up the house once more.  So you two can make your plans hopefully for about the week of the 21st.

Jean if you are any place where a health store operates will you please get me some food that is salt free.  That is going to be my problem.  I may like to stay a couple of days with you until I get Marie started again.  I plan to write a note to her soon.  Since I don't walk as much as I did I may have a little trouble but I don't think so.  With Mary V's help things will go along fine.  We enjoyed your type written letter.  (Hope the letter with church check) & Mary V money was sealed & reach N.V. all right.

Cris is getting ready to leave us Wed.  He plans to spend a little time with his girl friend in Atlanta.  He made a good Mulberry pie last week.  I cut the stems off for him & then Fri. we tried bread.  He made 3 loaves & it was very good.  He enjoys baking.

Notice in the News J. that Mr. Ridgeway is trying to stir up something.

[part from Grandma ends here, and the following is the note from Roberta]

We read about Wilmington in the Wall Street Journal – Wow!  Appreciate all the mail from College St. – Mary V. your typing is good!  ––Berta

1963 John's T&A Surgery - May 16

Removal of tonsils was fairly standard in the 1950s and 60s and usually occurred prior to starting school.  One could look out the Hale Hospital windows and watch the squirrels while eating ice cream during recuperation.  Also attached to this paperwork was a check for $15 to Dr. Fullerton. My recollection is he may have served as the anesthesiologist.  Pertinent details transcribed below.

2002 Wendy hit by truck - Oct. 8

Email (abridged) from Catherine to family three days after Wendy was hit by a delivery truck while in a crosswalk on campus at ASU-West.

Sent: Friday, Oct. 11, 2002
Subject: Wendy home from hospital

Good morning!  I feel slightly less pressed for time this am as Wendy is home from the hospital so we won't be spending the day in and out of the hospital doors.  The service levels at John C. Lincoln weren't quite up to the personal levels of the Chestatee Hospital in Dahlonega [where Jean had hip replacement during family reunion in July 2002] but that is a little far to go for trauma treatment!

Thanks to all of you for the calls and encouragement.  I know Wendy is appreciative of the attention and best wishes.  She has talked to Joe twice and he certainly has some experience with recuperating from an accident.  She has a follow up appointment with the trauma Dr. next week, and one with the orthopedic Dr. in two weeks.  The trauma Dr. said therapy is not necessary.  She just needs to put weight on her leg as the pain and discomfort allows and in only 3 or 4 months she'll be back to normal.

We did pick up a copy of the police report so we have the details and the witness reports.  Wendy was 16 feet into the intersection when the pipe delivery truck hit her so it wasn't like she stepped off the curb in front of him.  The driver admitted to being distracted as he wasn't sure where he was supposed to turn and he was looking left as she approached his vision from the right.  She was thrown 7 to 10 feet after being hit but her backpack (there is some advantage in wearing a heavy backpack) may have absorbed a lot of the force of her landing.  It didn't prevent the pelvic and sacrum fractures however!  Thanks goodness he wasn't going any faster and the injuries were not life threatening, only temporarily life-style changing!

Dee and Jessica are coming to visit this weekend so that will help cheer Wendy up as she always enjoys seeing them.  And Dee probably will be glad to have a couple days off from the rest of the kids.

Dad, did you read the article about bacon from the frying pan to a $23 entree in the WSJ?  The entree they were talking about sounded totally disgusting – of course anything with meat doesn't sound that good to me!

Love, C & G

This accident was a temporary setback for Wendy at ASU-West as she had hoped to graduate that year.  The school did refund her tuition for the semester since the accident happened on school property.

I still remember when we got the phone call about the accident, rushed to the scene, and found the ambulance had already taken her to the hospital.  We did have a short conversation with the truck driver who was quite distraught.  I have wondered how that accident affected his life.

Another recollection is when we got to the emergency room, Wendy made me smile by complaining about how the hospital staff had ruined her jeans by cutting them off her.  The long term effects of her accident include aches, pains and early arthritis in the areas bruised.

Catherine home from hospital Feb. 1949

In early February 1949 Jean and Catherine were released from the hospital.  These pictures were taken outside of the Uible apartment at Lakeview Terrace in Cleveland.  The Baby Buggy is the same one  that I remember the rest of my siblings also using and when it wasn't being used was stored upstairs at Wells.  People often told Mother she should bring it into the Church when she "parked" it outside the front door.  She said "If someone wants it that badly they can have it."  It was definitely showing some wear and tear by the time MV was the passenger.

I'm fortunate that my only other hospital stay as of 2011, was in ~1955 when I had my tonsils removed at the old Hale Hospital in Wilmington.  Lots more pictures of Wilmington at this website

Sid eating a plum

From My Photos
Sid in his Boswell hospital room eating a very ripe plum. He had blackberry pie frozen yogurt earlier in the evening - not sure if that counts as a fruit. He did eat some of the supper that the hospital served.

Sid is doing very well, although he is getting antsy to get up and OUT of the hospital. He has taken a couple of walks around inside the hospital.

If you tried to call the room this afternoon, you may not have gotten an answer - the telephone was turned so low that both Roberta and I had trouble hearing it. The phone ringer has been turned up, so . . .

We are hopeful that Sid will get out of the hospital tomorrow. I'm going over to the King house in the relatively early morning so that I can trim a bit more off the offending bush and do clean-up of the courtyard. We don't want Sid deciding that he needs to be outside - other than relaxing or, perhaps, looking for Fat Cat.

More as we know more . . .

From My Photos
Sid in his Del Webb spa/hospital bed, taken before his transfer to the Boswell spa/hospital. You can kinda see where Roberta has written her name and phone number on the tissue box - in case of an emergency.

the silent one

Just to let everyone know that I am often lurking to see what others that are more vocal....or rather more written than I have to say......

I can't wait to see pictures of KC with his parents.....we are disappointed that we cannot see him (and his parents) today, but I am sure that is pale compared to how Wendy and Ken feel about NOT being able to take him home today! More later.....love to all, Roberta
