1990 Cindy Uible's Letter to John -Apr.18

April 18, '90
Dear John,

How are you.  I am fine.  I been wanting to write to you since we talked on the phone.  It was real nice to talk to you.  I have been busy in the last few months.  I went to Washington D.C. and saw my brother and some sights.  It was fun to see him.

I have been busy with my birds.  I am raising and breeding Umbrella Cockatoos.  I hope to have eggs by the end of April.  I also have an African Grey who talks up a storm.

I have also been busy with my clowning.  Enclosed is me as "No-Body" the tramp clown and also is "Pierre" my African Grey.  I go also as "Punky" (or "Purdy"?) the clown but I don't have any up to date pictures.  My Grandfather has been in the hospital this week but so far he is doing ok.  We hope he will be [home] this Friday.  We thought that he might have had a stroke or heart attack but the doctors say so far he is ok.

"No-Body" has won awards in make-up & costumes in the Southeastern clown conventions and also World Clown Convention.  Well I guess I better go now.  Hope to hear from you soon.

Smiles

US President Elections of the "8" years

Though there is not a US presidential election in 2018, every 20 years there is a presidential election in an "8" year.  This review of the "8" year elections, will include tidbits of family history and which of our ancestors might have been involved in or interested in the politics of the era.

  • 1788 - None of the direct Uible ancestors arrived in the US until the early 1800's but the Hiestands and their ancestral lines were in the Pennsylvania/Virginia  area during the 1780s.  Henry Sprinkle (or Sprenkle) 1741-1814, appears  on the personal property tax records in Winchester, Virginia in 1787.  Henry's daughter, Mary Sarah "Sally" married John Hiestand.  Their son, Joseph S Hiestand was the father of Ira Hiestand, who was the father of Gladys Hiestand.  Therefore Henry is the 4th great-grandfather of the Uible-Horton cousins.
First Presidential Election in the U.S., with only 69 electors, George Washington was elected for the first of two terms, and John Adams became the first vice president.  Members of Congress made up the electors.
  • 1808 - James Morrow, born 1774 in Ireland, died 1825 in Brooke, Virginia.  He was the grandfather of Mary Virginia Morrow Brown who was the mother of Lucie Brown Ballantyne.  James is the 3rd great-grandfather of the Ballantyne-Dailey-Uible [BDU] cousins.
James Madison, a Democratic-Republican candidate defeated Federalist candidate Charles Cotesworth Pinckney to become the 4th president and the first to succeed a president of the same party.  George Clinton, the vice president under Thomas Jefferson, was renominated for vice president.
  • 1828 - John Fawley, born in Virginia in 1805, married Mary Hawk in 1823.  Their oldest son, Noah 1824-1914 was the father of Mary Ellen Fawley Hiestand, who was the grandmother of HH.  John is the 3rd great-grandfather of the Uible-Horton cousins.
With the collapse of the Democratic-Republican party, the 1828 election was Republican  incumbent John Quincy Adams versus Democrat Andrew Jackson, a rematch of the 1824 election, but instead of Adams winning as in 1824, Jackson was the victor.  Their running mates were Democrat John C. Calhoun and Republican Richard Rush.
  • 1848 - James L. Freeman, 1809-1892, 2nd great-grandfather of the BDU cousins, married Priscilla Gamble Freeman who died in 1840 in childbirth at the age of 18.  Fortunately for our family history, her daughter Virginia Irene Freeman Ballantyne was born in New Cumberland, survived until 1906, and became the mother of five children, the second oldest, Nathaniel Wallace Ballantyne being the grandfather of the BDU cousins.
In the first election to be held on the same day in every state, Tuesday was also chosen as the day on which future elections would be held.  A popular General in the Mexican-American War, Zachary Taylor, a Whig from Louisiana, defeated Democrat Lewis Cass and Martin Van Buren (who had served one term as president 1837-1841) of the Free Soil party.  Millard Fillmore became the Vice President.  Taylor remains the most recent winning candidate from a third party.
  • 1868 - David Uible, 1845-1926, married Sarah Elizabeth Smith, 1841-1890 in 1868.  They were the parents of Cecil Uible, and thus the great-grandparents of the Uible-Horton cousins.  1868 was also the year that Nathaniel Ballantyne, father of Jean, was born.  He died in 1949.
Ulysses S. Grant, Republican and his running mate Schuyler Colfax, defeated the Democratic candidate Horatio Seymour and vp candidate Francis Preston Blair, Jr.
  • 1888 - Perry O. Pence, born in Hillsboro in 1888, died in 1957.  Our closest common ancestor was Philip Wilkin, Jr. (1794-1994) his great-grandfather and also the great-grandfather of Gladys Hiestand Uible.
Republican nominee Benjamin Harrison defeated incumbent Democratic Grover Cleveland, despite Cleveland winning the popular vote.  Levi P. Morton became vice president, the losing vp candidate was Allen G. Thurman.
  • 1908 - Gladys's niece Lois Mitchell Schuetz, was the daughter of Luna Hiestand & Robert Glenn Mitchell.  She was born in 1908 and died in 1990.
Secretary of War Republican nominee William Howard Taft and his running mate James S. Sherman, defeated Democratic team William Jennings Bryan and John W. Kern.
  • 1928 - Kenneth "Pat" Kessel, nephew of Nathaniel Wallace Ballantyne, was born in 1928 and lives today in New Manchester, WV, close to New Cumberland.
Republican Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover defeated the Democratic Al Smith.  Vice Presidential candidates were Charles Curtis (R) and Joseph T. Robinson (D).  Hoover, from Iowa, became the first president born west of the Mississippi River.
  • 1948 - Wedding of Jean & HH
Harry S. Truman, Democrat incumbent, wan an upset election over Republican Thomas E. Dewey and third party candidate, Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond.  Alben W. Barkley became the VP.  Other VP candidates were Earl Warren (R) and Fielding L. Wright (Dixiecrat)
  • 1968 - Death of Cyrus DeHass of Hillsboro (1909-1968), 3rd cousin of HH, their common ancestor being their 2nd great-grandfather, John Fawley (1795-1882).
In a tumultuous year following the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, the Republican team of Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey (Edmund Muskie) and American Independent George Wallace (Curtis LeMay).
  • 1988 - Death of cartoonist, Milton Caniff, born in Hillsboro in 1907, died in New York City in 1988.  He was a nephew of Uncle Will's (CJ's brother) wife.
Republican George H.W. Bush, incumbent vice president, defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis.  Running mates were Dan Quayle (R) and Lloyd Bentsen (D).
  • 2008 - Death of the first of the Ballantyne-Dailey-Uible cousins, Roger Cochran Ballantyne 1943-2008.
Barack Obama, Democrat, was elected to his first term with Joe Biden as his running mate, defeating Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin.

1886 George Uible marriage -Oct.

Haven't figured out the exact connection of this George Uible (1853-1944) to David Uible (1845-1926) but assuming they are probably cousins.  There are still some family history documents regarding the immigration of Uibles to America in the 1800's that I haven't searched yet.  Apparently some time before the 1900 census George and Mary changed their last name as all later census and social security records have their last name as Bell.

1966 Vertie Uible obit -Sep.20

Verda May Burton Barger Uible, "Aunt Vertie" was born on March 11, 1879 in Fayette County, Ohio, the daughter of James and Laura Belle Carson Burton.   She was the oldest of five siblings, with three sisters and a brother.  Her sister, Elizabeth (1887-1974) was the mother of famous Hillsboro cartoonist, Milton Caniff (1907-1988), of whom Aunt Vertie was extremely proud.

She married her first husband, Harry Quincy Barger, in 1899.  He died in 1916.   In 1920 she married her second husband, William David "W.D." Uible, in Highland County, Ohio. She died on September 20, 1966, in Washington Court House, Ohio, at the age of 87.

She lived in a small house on the main street of Leesburg, where the Uible family made frequent visits before she moved to the nursing home in Washington Court House.  I have memories of seeing her "shrine" to Caniff on the fireplace mantel in her sitting room and playing "Mother May I" in her front yard with neighboring children.  At one time Uncle Will and Aunt Vertie operated a dairy on their property.

An obituary of her husband, our great-uncle, William David "W.D." or "Will" Uible can be found at this link: http://uible.blogspot.com/2012/10/1942-obituary-of-wd-uible-oct-2.html.

John in Family History & Favorite Brother

Several of us have a favorite brother who just might be celebrating a birthday today.  In addition to the John to whom we are most closely related, there are several other John's in our family history.  In fact, in the Uible-Ballantyne-Brown-Hiestand family tree, there are currently 64 men whose names include "John".

The John's in our family to which we are most closely related are listed below.  The ones not listed are cousins, uncles, in-laws, etc. including another of our favorite relatives, John Walgren.

1994 Howard Uible letter -July 22

Howard Perin Uible (1909-2010), first cousin of HH, was the third of four children born to Frank Crossen Uible (1871-1953) and Clara Louise Schloss Uible (1874-1960).   Howard's father, Frank, twelve years older than Cecil, was the second oldest of the seven siblings with C.J. being the second youngest.

Howard's siblings were Mary Serena Uible Sterrett (1901-1990), Frank Crossen Jr. (or Clifford?) Uible (1904-2001), and Richard Clyde Uible (1912-2007).

Howard wrote to HH after receiving a postcard from the 1994 Uible-Horton family reunion in Estes Park, Colorado.  Another blog post about Howard Uible can be found at this link: 2003 Howard Uible, HH & other Uibles.  Transcription and a picture follow.

1994 Howard Uible letter -July 22
July 22, 1994
Dear Jean and Harold –

We were happy to receive your card from Colorado.  To gather 38 related people, widely scatter I'm sure, to a family reunion is quite an accomplishment.  I know you must have had a wonderful time.

Yes, we too are proud of David's publicity.  We see David and Cindy occasionally and knew about some of the story.  He must have a lot of ability.

Things here in Cincinnati are going along as well as can be expected.  Jane has not been well and our activities are slowing down.

Steve and his two boys are doing well and Howard (St. Petersburg) is enjoying life in the sun.

Best wishes to all.

Sincerely,
Jane & Howard

2003 Howard Uible (center) with HHU (red shirt)
Presumed left is David Uible of buffalo ranch fame, and Woody Uible in the black shirt between Howard & HH.  Gentleman between David and Howard could be Howard's oldest son, also named Howard.

Uible Name Overview - 1981

With the [recent post about the] stop on the 1954 Europe trip in Karlsruhe to check out the family history, the following document sheds a bit more light on the Uible family history in Germany.  Transcription follows.  See map below for locations.

Posted by Picasa

Uibel/Uible Overview

Our name comes from the adjective "übel" which means evil and furious.  In 1286 lived a man called "Albrecht der Ubel," and composed forms of this are, for example, "Uibeleisen," a man called Uibel who traded with products of iron or made things of iron.  During the 15th and 16th centuries, near the village of Fischbach, Germany, on the northern bank of the Nahe River and Baden-Weierbach on the south side of the Nahe River, a great amount of mining for copper and silver was happening, and it is now thought that Ubel/Uibel families came from Thüringer, now controlled by Communist Germany*, to work at this trade.  After the 30 years wars, Ubel/Uibel families migrated from Thüringer  to Freistett near the town of Kehl-on-Rhine.  Today Uibel families live in Freistett, between Karlsruhe and Freiburg  and Dr. Seigfried Uibel, son of David Uibel, Elfenweg 20 D-7500, Karlsruhe 51, Western Germany, states that his ancestors came to Freistett after the 30 years war as charcoal burners from Thüringer.  Also, the name has been written as "Uibel" as long as has been known to them.

The fact that Siegfried's father's name is "David" makes it very probably that he is related to our John David Uibel – 1778-1843, buried at the Crosson Cemetery, Warren County, Ohio, about one mile west of Butlerville.

I have not attempted to research in more detail our ancestors from the Freistett Uibel clan.  The attached family tree is an effort to list all descendants from John David Uibel, the first and oldest ancestor that any of us are aware in the United States.  I apologize for any mistakes or errors and would be delighted to hear from anyone who has additional information or suggestions on this subject.

1943 HH goes to college

A clipping from the October 1, 1943 Hillsboro Press-Gazette, shows Aunt Vertie  accompanied HH and his parents to Cleveland in the fall of 1943 though no purpose of the trip is disclosed.  Probably because it was on a need to know basis.  Transcription of Uible paragraph follows.

Aunt Vertie, as you may remember, was the (third) wife of Cecil's brother, Will Uible (1869-1942).  Verda May Burton's (1879-1966) first marriage was to Harry Quincy Barger (1871-1916) in 1899.  She married Uncle Will in 1920.  She was stepmother to F.R. (Frank Rutledge) Uible (1895-1974), the initials are incorrect in this article.  Frank holds the distinction of being the first of three Uibles to graduate from New Vienna High School.  Frank graduated 1913, Mary Uible Horton 1931 and HH in 1943.

Uncle Will was the oldest of the Uible siblings, born in 1869 to David Uible (1845-1926) and Sarah Elizabeth (Angel?) Smith Uible (1841-1890).  He had an older half-sister, Addie (1862-?) by his mother who had been previously married, five brothers and two sisters:
  1. Frank Crossen Uible 1871-1953
  2. Mary Louisa Uible 1873-1893
  3. Ennis Harris Uible 1877-1910
  4. Clyde Uible 1879-1906
  5. George C Uible 1880-1906
  6. Cecil J Uible 1883-1969
  7. Serena Uible Reynolds 1884-1963
Will married Ida Stouder (?) and had two sons, Frank Rutledge 1895-1974 and Russell Lionel 1896-1983.  In 1902 he married Jennie Case Moon Brown, they were divorced in 1920.  Sometime before 1930 he married Aunt Vertie, Verda May Burton Barger Uible (1879-1966).  She had previously been married to Harry Quincy Barger (1871-1916).

Family Research: Uible, Shull Family

I notice in looking at the Clinton County Cemetery Records there is a Philip Uible listed on the Roll Call of Departed Veterans in the "Old Cemetery and Addition" in Liberty Township (Port William). This may be part of the Maple Grove Cemetery. It doesn't list him under the burials though so no birth or death info. In order to be a veteran of the War of 1812, he would have had to been born at least prior to 1800. He's the only other Uible listed in the book outside of our immediate family.  He would most likely be a generation or two prior to David Uible (born 1845) the patriarch shown below.  David's father was Johann David Uible (1822-1849) and his grand-father also Johann David (1778-1843).  After I finish going through the family history files, I may be able to speak with more authority about our connection with Philip.

Also been doing a bit of research on the Shull family as one of the pictures which Marianne loaned me had a note on the back written by Lavone Shull Conover (1907-1997) who was CJ's step-mother's (Andelia Hudson Shull Uible 1845-1937) grand-daughter. She lived in Vernon Township (Cuba area) as a young person but later moved to Cincinnati.  She writes the date, her name, and a cryptic "Do you know these folks?"

Uible Reunion Sunday April 19, 1925.  Gladys Hiestand Uible third from right standing.  Will Uible further right standing.  Presumably David Uible seated with cane and his wife Andelia Eglantine Hudson Shull Uible to his right.  Gladys would have been pregnant.  Could Mary be peeking out second to the left of David?  Where is CJ?  Possibly in the back row between two taller men.  David died the following year.

CJ's father, David Uible (1845-1926) married Sarah Elizabeth Smith (1841-1890) in 1868.  She had a daughter, Addie (1862-?) by a previous marriage, who would have been CJ's much older half-sister.  Possibly Sarah's first husband died in the Civil War, but I have been unable to confirm that.  David and Sarah had eight children:

  1. William David "Will" Uible (1869-?)
  2. Frank Crossen Uible (1871-1953)
  3. Mary Louisa Uible (1873-1893)
  4. Ennis Harris Uible (1877-1910)
  5. Clyde Uible (1879-1906)
  6. George C. Uible (1880-1906)
  7. Cecil J Uible (1883-1969)
  8. Serena Uible Reynolds (1884-1963)
Sarah died in 1890 and David married Andelia Eglantine Hudson Shull in 1892.  She and her first husband, John Shull (1836-1878), had five children who were mostly grown by the time Andelia married David.

To summarize, CJ had seven siblings, one older half-sister, and five older step-siblings.

Serena Uible Reynolds & "Four Little Kittens"

Serena Uible Reynolds (sister of CJ Uible) and "the four little kittens" Helen, Marjorie, Serena, Lucile.  Blanchester, Ohio 1919, before Leslie's birth.

Serena Uible Reynolds 1882-1963, was one year older than Cecil J. Uible.  Her husband, Leslie Clinton Reynolds died in 1924 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  She died in San Mateo, California on December 20, 1963.  They were moving to California for his health.  Not sure if they made it to California or if he died en route.  Since daughter Serena was born in California they had obviously been to California previously.

Helen Reynolds Hancock 1910-1963, married Paul W. Hancock, Jr. (1915-2002) before 1942, she died in Los Angeles on July 31, 1963.

Marjorie Reynolds Guild born June 22, 1912 and died February 17, 1994 in Los Angeles.  Married to Henry Guild.

Serena Reynolds Pugh born April 17, 1914 in Kern, California, and died February 4, 1968 in San Francisco.  She married Keith E. Pugh and had a son Keith, Jr., who has 3 daughters and two sons.  One of Keith Jr.'s sons, Scott Christopher Pugh died in 2004.

Lucile Reynolds (1-Robert Triplett, 2- Dustin Hunnicut) Ito 1916-?.  Her last husband Naboru Ito.

Leslie Clinton Reynolds 1922-1998, born three years after this picture.  He married Joan Berry.  He became Leslie Sr., when his son, Jr. was born and he also had a daughter.  Leslie Jr. has two daughters.

Here's another picture which MV originally posted in 2008:

Supposedly L-R: Harold Uible, Gladys Uible, Leslie, Serena, Lucille Reynolds and CJ Uible.  Something seems funny though if Leslie is supposed to be three years older than HH.  Could this be one of Serena's grandsons?  Keith Pugh, Jr. maybe who was born in 1937?  Could be a son of Lucille except I don't know if she had any sons....

Harold, Gladys and CJ traveled to California in 1936 spending some time with the Reynolds, where HH learned to ride a bike on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles..  See this post: 1936 & 1944 trips - California and Florida for more information.  [Some of the pictures need to be reposted though.]

There may be more information about Aunt Serena's family in my possession, but this is what is currently at hand.  Corrections and additions welcome and I'll post more when I find it!

Hortons 50th Wedding Anniversary

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [HH to Elderhostel in Athens OH, Jean & Wendy to Elderhostel in Townsend TN]

Wednesday 1990 - [Dayton to home] Got to the Knights Inn in Vandalia [Dayton airport] early early in the AM, the van that met us said "Thrifty Car Rental,"  finally got together.  Bob Walker came at 10:30 for us, had lunch at Wendy's.  Garden salad 99¢.

Saturday 1992 - Cleared along Rt. 73 at Wells, especially in front of the block building – 8 wheelbarrow loads, also the intersection.  The Hortons open house [for their 50th Anniversary] was from 2-4.  Walter Nichols* music group played.  They had a lot of pictures on the walls, even Mother and Dad's portraits.  Mother was in rare shape and did great.  Gary Cooper took lots of pictures.  Don Williams was there with a video camera.  Took GHU back to Hillsboro at 5:30, then the supper was at 6.  Angela had rented plates, etc.  Ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad, cake and ice cream.  About 36 at dinner.  Broke up about 8PM and they all came to our house.  Carol and John Mueler are both deaf, but carry on a great conversations.  Their daughter is at O.U. in chemistry.  David and Cindy Uible had a 420 Mercedes.  He sells computers to Swiss banks.  Cindy hit it off with Joe and she bought $700+ of paintings.  It was midnight when we got to bed.  [This reminds those of us old enough to remember of Grandma & Granddad's 50th Anniversary in 1962 when John wanted to keep the door "open" for the open house.  The HH family left a few days later for a five-week trip west.]

*HH adds in 2010: On the Hortons do recall Wil Horton and how he was so much of a pain to Walter Nichols (he was MUH' age and they grew up together in Westboro and he later became Supt of Co. Schools) in his playing the instrument.

Sunday 1993 - Father's Day at Sunday School, got a pair of white socks for having the largest size shoe - 13.  Jean hit a home run on the solitaire computer game.  Bill and Mary were here for lunch.  Bill loves the ham loaf.

Tuesday 1995 - [Elderhostel Marine Expeditions program through 6/27]

Thursday 1996 - [Elderhostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Friday 1997 - Larry Lyons (89) passed away.  Started his law practice in 1934.  Big (?) news about the tobacco settlement.

Sunday 1999 - We had invited Bob and Mary Flick to church.  They live at 22 Rice Dr and have been in town about 5 years.  Jean had Ezekiel 3 for SS lesson.  We got back to SS just as they were handing out cookies to the fathers.  Mrs. Flick is quite a talker.  Met John, Julie and Kate at City Park in Chillicothe, nice spot.  Kate does a great job of bike riding without training wheels.  Got gas in Greenfield for 95.9¢.

Welcome Home, One and All

By this time tomorrow night, all of us should be back home. Interesting the AZ contingent will reach their destination first, but that is certainly the joys of modern technology/aviation! We had an enjoyable day at St. Augustine and the kids left happy. We did find some shorts at The Avenues Mall (Julie---we took the others back! Hopefully it is a lesson learned for Ginny) and had dinner at Seven Bridges Brewery and Grille, thanks to JBs AAA book. Evidently it is part of the Gordon Biersch Restaurant group...but the food was excellent and service quick and attentive. I think I've been reading too many tour books and starting to sound like one. At any rate, we will head out in the morning and glad to hear from Julie via cell phone that they had already progressed to Charlotte, NC at suppertime tonight and planned to go further. It was wonderful to see everyone and appreciate not only the folks generous hospitality but the Horton warm welcome and tolerance of the boys splashing in their pool everyday!
