2000 - Kate's email -Sep.9

Subject:  Thank you

Dear Grandma and Grandpa Uible,

Thank you for my early Christmas present.  Mom and I bought a scooter this morning at Toys-R-Us.  I love it and it rides reaaly nice.  Maybe Grandpa would like to borrow it for his Indiana ride.  It was fun to visit you last weekend.  We had a good time.

Dad has had a hard time getting through to Oglebay but he found out rates this summer were $130-140 PER night for rooms in Wilson Lodge.  Sounds a bit expensive don't you think?  We leave for Cleveland this evening for Andrew's INS appointment at 8:30am Friday.  He should become a true blue American U.S. citizen soon.  I have a slumber party at Kristen's house tomorrow night.  I still want to give Ginny a call.

Love,
Kate Uivble

1996 Family Letter -May 12

May 12, 1996 (Mother's Day)
Dearest Morgans,

It is early Sunday morning and I wanted to write before the family got up and this seemed to be the best time.  But without my glasses to read the symbols on the computer I could do nothing.  Of course I wakened Dad when I went back to get them but think he'll go back to sleep.

We really enjoyed Wendy's papers and have shared them with all the family.  We could especially see various members in the tightwad one but did get some good laughs out of it.  No one took offense but thought them all very good.  Had to use the dictionary for one of them but that's good for us too.

I want to thank you too for the Mother's Day cards.  They were lovely and Wendy's was the first one I received.  It's always good to hear but as you know Dad says a special card is not necessary.  I got one in the mail addressed to "Grandma Bubble" but luckily it had the box number on it so the post office knew to whom it should be delivered.  Kate calls herself "Kate Bubble" or as sometimes she says "Kate Ashcraft."

It was good seeing so many of the Estes Park reunion together though we did miss the Morgans being there.  Bob, Beverly and Lisa Gooding as well as Betty and Jerry Ashcraft came and of course John, Julie and Kate Uible.  Mary and Cris got there too as they arrived from Florida just the day before.  When we got back Angela was at Grandma's house with Laura and Will.  I forgot to mention that we all met at Young's Dairy Farm and Ginny and Kate not only enjoyed the food there finishing off with ice cream but got to go out to the barn and saw the cows, pigs, sheep and also the goats.  They sold goat food (pellets) and Ginny and Kate finally got brave enough to feed them.  The goats would only eat if you held the food that was in your hand and they would lick it off.

Jim Gooding wasn't able to come as he had to go to a funeral of a young friend of his but the others all talked about the experiences of rafting, hiking, etc. at the Y in the Rockies mentioned how they were sorry that the Morgans couldn't be there with us yesterday.

We had originally planned to go to a fancier restaurant in Yellow Springs but the numbers and children coming kept increasing so though some were disappointed (adults), we know the children would have been more comfortable at Youngs.

Serena met Roberta at the airport when she came from Phoenix (which you probably had heard was to happen but John and family were there too and then they all had dinner together.  We met them the next day for brunch after attending church with J, J & K.  Then that afternoon was the big #3 birthday party for Kate with the Sr. Ashcrafts and two of Julie's sisters, her brother and all their children (and spouses minus one).

Even Joan was there with her 15 day old baby Abigail which only Joan and her husband were allowed to hold.  I didn't even see G'ma Betty holding her.

We did enjoy having Roberta here and seeing a little more of Serena, even taking her to the airport Tuesday when she took off for London and other parts.  We would like to get a card from her but that's rather doubtful.

I have been going on and on but will leave some space for Dad to add a note.  I wasn't sure the computer would work after Ginny, Wil and Laura kept fighting over whose turn it was to use it last night.  We are all to have lunch together at the Elks and then we will be on our [way] to the airport with Roberta with a possible stop at one of the two outlet malls on the way.

Wow, "Luscious" wears me out to think that she typed all this while I was resting. Anyway I better not hit the wrong keys to erase all this work she has put into this long letter.  Seriously, we do enjoy all the faithfulness that you all show in calling and writing.

[love, etc.]

1996 Family Letter -April 7

April 7, 1996

Dear Family,

First, thanks for the anniversary cards and / or calls this week.  We had several conflicts on the actual day, but did make the library circuit and eating out on the day before.

The big news is that we reached Serena on the phone and met her today for lunch in Cincinnati.  Going to meet her again in another two weeks.  She told us that she is recuperating from mono.  On May 8th she plans to go to England for four weeks.  We also talked about the possibility of her meeting Roberta on May 5th and their going on to Newark, where we could join them the next afternoon for Kate's birthday party.

As you can see we are trying out different type of fonts but haven't settled on any one yet.  We also have an encyclopedia with the computer so can use it in our spare time.  It has been a snowy.  [sic]  Thankfully it doesn't last (the snow, that is).  We changed the bulletin board at the church and about froze before we finished on account of the icy wind, but didn't think we needed to have the Easter schedule up any longer.

Wish that at least one of you would be on hand for the UMW Guest night coming up this Tuesday. It's to be at the Senior Citizens Building and a pot luck followed by 5 clowns from the First Church of Christ of Wilmington.  I've got to wrap door prizes for it and blow up balloons we are using for decorations.  Guess who is President of the NVUMW?

It is now on "cuckoo" font – sorry I thought it was but it is "jester" yet.  Mary Virginia just called and said that beside her other activities of Easter morning that she had invited 11 guests for dinner.  She didn't come home to dress Ginny for Sunday School and church and Don had done a good job but her dress was on backwards with pocket and flowers in the back.

Judy Henderson McCord and her mother fixed breakfast for the ones who stayed after the sunrise service.  The youth put on a short skit and the choir sang some special numbers.  By the way Judy said she is going with Kevin Croghan now and has so much more in common with him than her first husband.  Kevin also brought his granddaughter (his step daughter's baby – they all live with him so it may be some mixed up family if Kevin and Judy ever marry.

Sorry we couldn't make it to lunch with John, Julie, Kate and the Ashcrafts.  We would have liked to but knew timewise it wasn't feasible.  Four weeks from today Kate will be celebrating her birthday – hard to believe that she will be three.  Roberta will be coming into Columbus the day before.  And the day after Mary Virginia will be bringing Ginny to visit us for a few days.  That will be a busy week end plus!

Things are busy at the office . . . the home stretch for tax returns is here.  On the contested estate matter we won on the first round in the local court, and now the opposition has appealed the case.  Hopefully there will not be a conflict with our June trip to Europe . . . not to mention the Montana plans.

[Remainder is handwritten, the personalized part]

Glad to get a report on your activities by phone from you & today from Roberta.  She seemed real pleased with Wendy joining them for lunch & church.  Said how very thin she's getting & how nice she looked!

Really like the Encarta on the computer now we just need the knowledge of what key(s) to punch.

Love,
Mother & Dad

1993 Family Letter - May 19

This letter in ALL CAPS seems a bit "LOUD" but still glad to have the letter. Speaking of letters, I've been wishing we had more of the 1953 era letters. There are three possibilities… 1 – They weren't written; 2 – they weren't saved; or 3 – I haven't found them yet. Hoping for the latter! Transcription (in lower case) of this 1993 letter follows.

Wed., Mary 19, 1993

Dearest Family –

It's been quite awhile since we have written to all of you but hope we get a letter off now while Dad goes over to see G'ma.  I brought the car down here so he could take off quicker (and I might play solitaire on the computer (haven't won a game since they told me how fun that is - fireworks & all).  I did copy some things so am now trying my luck again using the computer to better advantage.

Can't remember wen we last wrote but know it has been a long time.  We did enjoy seeing John , Julie and especially little Kate when she was just a few hours old on May 6th. Then a couple of days later we went down to Williamsburg to see the Crowsons and were there when the Bishop and the District Supt. came to Don's country church  to dedicate the new addition.  The Bishop said it is most unusual to not consecrate a church structure and then dedicate it later when it is all paid for but this was paid for right along.

Everyone was very impressed with all the dignitaries there and Don did an excellent job and Mary Virginia sang well as always.  Of course incidentally we enjoyed seeing Ginny too.  She is doing more and more things and will soon be walking - she moves from place to place by hanging on now.  She is a real good eater and so god natured.  Wish we could see them more often but do get to see them oftener than we did the Morgans when Wendy was that young.

Yesterday Dad had an all day meeting in Lancaster so John arranged a ride for him to Newark and I drove to Newark after dropping him off at his meeting place.  So I spent the rest of the day with Julie and little Kate or Katie.  She was much more wide awake and I tried to let Julie get some needed rest but Katie was awake and especially hungry.  She is adorable too and so tiny but has gotten a good start.  They take her to the Doctor Friday so we're anxious to get more details then. They have gotten so many cards and flowers.  The house is filled.  The nursery is loaded with gifts.  Mary Virginia sent up things that Ginny had out grown too so we added to the room.

The Hortons arrived Monday after stopping to visit friends on the way up and also the Crowsons unannounced.  M V had a big children's program at the Somerset church so know how delighted she must have felt to have company waiting for her.  Aunt Mary said how organized she is and helpful Don had been meeting them and leading them to their house.  The Hortons always seem to come at a busy time - busier than usual for the Crowsons are always busy.

Anyway the Hortons found G'ma real good and are back in the swing of things at the Senior Citizens' - they had mad reservations there for lunch on Tuesday (yesterday).  Some days G'ma is so wide awake and talkative and other days like last Sunday we couldn't get her awake enough to eat and barely drink a little.

Dad will soon be stopping for me so better close so I'll be ready when he stops - I'll try to add notes to each .

I forgot to mention that we did go to Dayton for the Ohio Bar Meeting and saw the Goodings Thursday night and glad that Serena was able to meet us on Friday evening.  She is super busy but we ate at a nice restaurant that was new to all of us.

2002 Pictures from Reunion

In July 2002 some of us flew into Nashville and visited Opryland, Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, and civil war sites on the way to Dahlonega, Georgia.  First are pictures of the recent birthday boy and his family.  This trip was also memorable because of Jean breaking her hip while in an ice cream shop in Chattanooga.

2002 - Emails to/from John

In a letter John wrote to his parents on March 2, 2002, he mentioned Kate's Dance Alive program to be held on Saturday, March 16.  In the week prior to that, some emails were exchanged regarding Kate's Uible grandparents visiting Newark during that time.

7-March-2002 To John from Uibles
Thanks for the letter.  Yes, we have made reservations for Sat. night at the Marriott.  Please get us a rose for Kate.  Thanks.  Oh yes, let us know if you get this, as had heard you had not gotten our last email.  Love, M&D

7-March-2002 To Uibles from John
Yes, we received your message and glad you can stay over Sat. night.  Since you are coming, we may check to see if you are up to watching Andrew for a few hours Sat. evening.  Jerry and Betty expressed interest in eating out with you afte Kate's performance Saturday.  Do you have interest?  Andrew and I could join you two, but Kate needs to be back at 5PM for evening performance and Julie wants her to rest in between shows.  By the way, we are looking at Sunday, May 5th for Kate's birthday party.  Hope you can join us.  Love, John

8-March-2002 To John from Uibles
Dear John, Julie, Kate and Andrew,
We did get your email and would be happy to look after Andrew – that would be our pleasure and also to see the Ashcrafts but doubt if Andrew wants too formal a dinner.  Use your own best judgment and we will go from there.  Always glad to hear from you and am sure Kate will do a very good performance.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you but please no big or elaborate plans – it's primarily to see Kate and the rest of the family.  Love to each one of you, Dad and Mother

13-March-2002 To Uibles from John
Mom and Dad, We look for you to arrive late Saturday morning or at least by noon.  Plan to come to our house as we can all go to Granville together.  There is a parade beginning at 2PM to honor Lea Ann Parsley so we will have to allow a little extra time.  Jerry and Betty are planning to eat out with us afte the show and Andrew is excited about swimming at the Courtyard.  Do you have interest in attending our Sat. evening church service at 7PM?  Or would you prefer the early Sunday service at 8:15AM?  You can tell us when you arrive Saturday.  Love, John

Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you for the contribution to Kate's College Advantage Fund.  We just received the statement showing your check.  You were most generous.

We have tickets for you to attend Kate's Dance Alive on Saturday March 16 at 2:00 PM.  Enclosed is a flyer to tell you more about it.  Would you come to spend the night before or Sat. night?  The new Courtyard by Marriott is open for business.  $99/night during the week and $79/night on the weekend.

I met your friend, Vicki Baker, at a 50+ Lifestyle Fair last Saturday.  She went on about how nice yo two are.  They might like to see you when you come up mid-March.

We are planning to go visit Cris Horton family the weekend of April 5-7th in Auburn IN.  Hopefully Jerry and Betty can go as well to see Cris's business.  Cris tells me business has picked up in the past few weeks.

3/4/02 Monday AM
Dad, I checked and we did not receive your email over the weekend.  We're anxious to see you on Sat. March 16th about noon at our house, unless yo decide to come up Friday evening.  Andrew and I and possibly Kate would love to swim with you at the Courtyard before Dance Alive if that works out.

Mary V tells me they are considering staying the full time in Maui (until Wed. Dec. 4) since the cost is about the same.

See you next week!

Love, John

[written on back side]
P.S. You might want to (or have us) buy a flower like one rose to present to Kate after her dance performance Sat. afternoon.  I think Betty & Jerry will do that.  Just a thought.
P.S.S. Thanks for the wedding clipping of Bakers and Beers.

It was nice to hear from everyone.  Julie's grandfather passed away Jan 26th and the funeral was Wednesday morning.  Very nice service with a lot of people attending.  All her family were if for calling hours and services.  The Methodist Church her grandparents attended hosted a lunch for the family after we returned from the cemetery.

Kate read an entire book yesterday.  Catherine, your nice note must have encouraged her.  It was one of the Cul de Sac Kids series.  Andrew and Kate are busy with swim lessons at the YMCA for three more weeks.  The bank is keeping me extremely busy right now.  Started our income tax return two days ago and want to finish it soon as we expect a refund for first time in years.

Tell Mom and Dad, plan to pick them up Monday Feb. 11th between 8:45 and 9:00PM.  Roberta and Sid, glad to hear the move went smoothly.  No more news about Serena since hearing she may be in Chicago.  Love, John

December 30, 1989-99

Coming to an end

 HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Friday 1988 - We went to Wilmington and got this book [the diary itself, a SD364 "1990 Standard Diary"] at Watsons for $21, had been $42 (but we got it a year early).  Had supper at Frisch's, total $7.80.  Jean had salad bar with spaghetti and I had liver and onions.  Unleaded gas 85.9¢ 3600 miles on the Honda.  Getting about 30mpg around town.

Saturday 1989 - [Phoenix] Went to Albertson's at 59th and Cactus [actually it's at 51st & Cactus and is one of the few Albertson's still open within 5 miles of our house, one at 59th and Olive opened in 2004, closed in 2007, replaced by Fresh & Easy (in half of former Albertson's) in 2008, closed in 2010.  Another former Albertson's at 75th and Cactus has been replaced by Lee Lee's oriental foods.]  Lunch at Safeway, salad bar, $2.39 each.  Went to Mesa, saw the Mormon Temple, beautiful lights.

Sunday 1990 - Had SS lesson, Matthew 22.  Jean called us about 1:30am re Mother's temperature at 103 degrees.  John left at 8am to meet Julie in Worthington to go to a wedding in Cleveland.  Jean not feeling up to par.  More rain.

Monday 1991 - [Nashville to home with the Sankers] Complimentary continental breakfast at the [Maxwell House] hotel, story of how Maxwell House coffee got it's name. Drove by Parthenon downtown area and then to Hermitage, $6.50 each, nice reception area.  Got tape recorder, nice visit.  Lunch at Morrison's Cafeteria, pie 89¢.  Got back to Sankers at 9pm, 666 miles later.  Gas 96.9¢.

Wednesday 1992 - Crowsons arrived, used bread maker again.  29 days on gas bill, 257 ccfs used, $140.40.  Up in the 50s today.

Thursday 1993 - Got heel plates on Timberland Shoes in Wilmington, $1.50.  LL Bean sale catalog came.

Friday 1994 - [Phoenix] We had breakfast at First Watch, too much to eat.  John, Julie, Kate, Catherine and I went to South Mountain for a hike, 3.5 miles.  Fat man squeeze on hike, nice walk.  Got back to Best West about 3pm, their salesman has cancer and not doing too well, plus lady salesman who has 5 children is having trouble with her oldest (13).  Prior to going to Red Robin [closed that location, later opened at Arrowhead] at 59th and Bell went to Price Club [now Costco, moved out of that location and opened at Arrowhead].  What a lot of clapping at Red Robin [they had a birthday song involving clapping which I adapted and used for preschool programs at the library].  Kate liked that.  What huge desserts, two of them were enough for 8 of us.

Saturday 1995 - Article in WNJ about train to Wilmington from 8/11/1853 to 7/21/1956.  Took Jean's UMC paper to gal in Springboro, walked around Dayton Mall, new JC Penney store to open 3/96.  Had supper at Sweeneys [Seafood House] in Centerville.  Light portion of salmon and 2 vegetables for $12.95.  Soup $1.95.

Monday 1996 - [Phoenix] Got our Alamo rental car and checked into the Homestead at 21st Ave. and Dunlap.  New this year, have room #305.

Thursday 1999 - Jean had MD appointment, had lunch at Jay's Landing.  Serena helped me with word processing.

Sunday 1999 - [to Newark] Drove to Newark in PM, got there about 4.  Went out for supper at Bunky's [opened 1998, closed 2001] at 1650 W. Church St. in what used to be a grocery.  They have a mini-brewery there.  I had [illegible] which was really too spicy.  The rolls were good.  Kate was glued to the TV going on.  She had to be at the Church at 6pm for practice.  The program started at 7:30.  Kate sang in a chorus.  We were the first ones to use their guest room in the basement, very comfortable.

[Tuesday 2006 - Great-Grandson Kenneth Charles "KC" Counts born to Wendy and Ken.]

Friday 1990 - Beautiful day.  Transplanted trees and shrubs + hauled down a lot of brush from Betty Thompson's.

Saturday 1991 - [to Santa Fe NM] Flew to Albuquerque where we rented a car and drove to Santa Fe.  Had reservations at the Picacho Hotel [no longer listed, may have changed names], then had dinner at La Casa Sena.  It's cold there.

Tuesday 1993 - Jean got Jay Ewing to come and help put up the storm windows.  Mother still won't drink much liquid.  Sadie hopes she will hang in there until Roberta arrives.  Put some leaves on the garden.  December issue of National Geographic came.

Wednesday 1994 - Dow Jones Index down 92 points.  John, Julie and Kate arrive.  John had sheet on Concorde flight to London from Columbus, Ohio and back on the Q.E. Thursday 1995 - [Orlando Florida, Thanksgiving] Went to the Peabody Hotel at 11am to see the 5 ducks "run" to the fountain.  Then to Church St. Station, 1886 RR station and shop.  We ate at Lili Marlene's [not currently a restaurant with that name in Orlando], we were there 2 hours.  Next door was Brady O'Grady [possibly Rosie O'Grady's which is listed as a former entertainment place at Church Street Station, now closed] where fellow played and sang.  We walked around Lake Eola.  Back to Disney Village, what a crowd.  Had to call lock man to get into our room.

Saturday 1996 - Back from LA and the Australia and New Zealand trip.  Joe Hiestand Family had party at Snow Hill for Joe's 90th birthday.  The plane ticket cost was $1379.

Monday 1998 - [Death Valley to Laughlin NV] Drove to Badwater, walked out on salt, lowest spot in North America.  Sign up on hill "Sea Level."  Some rough road into Shoshone CA.  Pit stop at nice McDonald's in Pahrump NV, lots of building sites there.  Ate lunch at 160 & I-15, got potato soup and sandwich as carry out.  Then Jean went in and we got ice cream, $2 for a waffle cone.  On to Laughlin and have room 5070 at the Hilton for $17/night.  Great view of the river, also nice walk along the river.  Had supper in their diner, prime rib for $7.95, too much to eat and Jean had French Dip.  At least you can get around here without passing too many slots.  Went to movie across the street, saw Pleasantville, weird.  They didn't know what rain was and this gal falls for the artist.

Tuesday 1999 - John, Julie and Kate arrive.  Kate likes to play librarian.  Grant was at Wells again.  Grabills [?] were in re conservation easement.  Also John Hill about the wrecked car, where title signed by P/A.  Jean had spaghetti for supper and some crispy cookies that really turned out brittle.  Dr. Weatherington called and said my blood tests were good with a low PST.  They are starting to move things out of the old NV School.  Kate is a finicky eater.

*****
John remembers the hike in 1994 with fond memories, and adds that (re 1996) he had Miss Purtee for third grade and agrees that she was no fun and quite strict.

HH adds re 1996: Reading about Aleda Purtee (my NVHS Classmate) reminded me of that experience as I was the Executor of the Estate and to say she was a hoarder is an understatement. Some of the rooms were so packed (like old cereal boxes, grocery sale bills, etc etc) up to one's height that you could not see out the window.  In fact the house was so full that she had built a garage which was also filling up.
