1936 & 1944 trips - California and Florida

I don't recall a journal in our fall 1936 trip to CA.  Just stops in Columbia, Mo to see Aunt Luna, then in NM the police helping us get out of "A" [Albuquerque] because of the lack of road signs.  In LA  we stayed in some hotel to visit Aunt Serena and I learned to ride a bike on Wilshire Blvd.  Spent Christmas in LA and ate at Clifton's Cafeteria.  Then eating too many raw dates and the bad results on our way to FL.  We were in LA area for Christmas and then on to Florida.  Dad being in the construction business wanted to see the then new Hoover Dam, plus some bridge in New Orleans.  They had either a Lincoln or a Packard with electric windows -- that was quite a novelty in l936.  The previous winter or so we had stopped at different places around FL and believe it was just having people they knew from Clinton County that wintered in Lake Worth is the reason we ended up in LW.  I think Dad did most all the driving, but uncertain as to the status of MUH [whether she went, or whether she drove?  She would have been 23 in 1936].

[HHU on left and friend ~1937 - Image Unavailable]
In 1944, Bill Horton was in WA state and Mary and I drove out in his 1936 (?) Chevrolet.  The front bumper came off which we fixed with some wire.  The first night out was Madison, WI and a night at Old Faithful, which was pretty well shut down and they were down to unisex rest rooms.

[Photo above of HHU, September 1944 in the Badlands]
One of the first things I recall about arriving in Palo Alto, [in the fall of 1944 to attend Stanford] after hitch hiking from the Seattle Area, where Bill Horton was at Ft. Lewis, was the prices -- i.e. that CA salad was 75 cents, while in our area of Ohio that was the price of a whole big meal. You know in Cleveland [attending Western Reserve] I had to eat every meal on my own (there were no dorms) and the going price was 50 cents and by buying a package of ten meals we got 10% off.  As a depression kid a dollar was a big deal.

Christmas season of 1944 I spent with the CA relatives.  One of Aunt Serena's daughter's husband had a small hog farm and we would go to the day old bakery and get a pick-up load of old bread for the hogs.  More positive we did go to the Rose Bowl parade.  Of her five children only Leslie had two children.

That Junior year in Cleveland (1945-46), attending Adelbert College, I lived much closer to the campus (the apt. where your Mother also had a much larger room and then she and Jean Campbell moved into an apt of their own up the street) and about a  block from my cousin Rudledge's home.  He and his wife were both attorneys.  [Dad, I'm sure there are many more details which would interest us regarding the college years.  Keep thinking about what else you can share...]

Friday 1989 - [to Newark by bike] Cooled off on idea of riding bike all the way from NV to Newark - 110 miles - as it was 3 degrees.  Had thought I would leave the car at Deer Creek State Park but decided to drive on to Circleville where I parked in the hospital parking lot and took off on Rt. 188.  On the 6th mile had detour sign up but kept going and was able to carry the bike across a new bridge.  Had lunch in Lancaster at Rae's, soup and salad bar $2.77, then up 158 to Rt. 16.  Lots of traffic there, arrived about 5pm, 57 miles on the road in five hours.  Had supper at a small restaurant ($3.95), the owner joined us and was quite a talker.  John had material to deliver to heart fund workers.  John has new walk on north side of house.  Met his friend Pete, head teller at bank.  WNJ 150th Edition, single issue 35 cents.  John had a paper route for 9 years and then the Enquirer, got interested in Exeter.  Double rates at Deer Creek Lodge are $75 ($84.38 with tax) for weekends and $69.75 weekdays through 3/31/89.

Visited one of the cottages, 2 bedrooms and huge living room for only $4500/night, complete with private pool, etc. Looked at model home for sale, about $600M [$600,000,000? -- wonder how housing prices are holding up there?] plus $1100/month for maintenance. Supper at the Canoe House, very nice and generous servings. I had fried tofu, Jean had hibachi chicken. Lunched at a bakery in Naalehu on bread samples. Staying at Volcano Hole $75, drove around the Crater Rim and Chain of Craters Hwy (just like its name), through telescope could see bright lava on the surface. Had supper at [?] steam-vent take out around the corner.

January 24, Saturday - Into Hilo, Lyman Museum and [Mission] House, then ice cream at Old Kress building, built in 1933, closed in 1980. Drove down to end of 130 then up beach road [132] to Pohoiki, narrow and winding, saw Lava Tree State Monument, interesting tree shapes. Supper in Pahoa at Italian Restaurant with little business.

January 25, Sunday - Breakfast in our room, mini loaves of bread, juice, papayas and bananas. Went to Hilo UMC, very friendly. Saw Akaka Falls State Park, up to Waipi'o Overlook, got ice cream nearby for lunch. Got here [hotel in Kohala Coast -- confirmed by postcard dated 1/28/98 that they are staying at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel] about 4pm, Room 417 $350 [or $35?] with breakfast. VERY NICE. [must be $350!] Walked up the beach to the Orchid [now Fairmont Orchid] and ate at Brown's Beach House, right on ocean terrace with music.

January 26, Monday - Went down to the beach, water in ocean was cold, pool was better and whirlpool even more, nice curves for a sort of privacy. Went to breakfast at 10, $22 each for buffet [but it was included?], quite a spread. Enjoyed watching all the birds. Drove down to Hilton Village, a huge place. We took the train ride, then saw the dolphins and people swimming with them. That's $90 a person or two for $150 for a little shorter session. Then to Four Seasons, quite restrained compared with the Hilton.
Drove to Waimea, got more band aids for Jean's toes. Ate at Merriman's Restaurant which has had several reviews in NYT. At 10:30 we had the buffet then at 1:30 we were the only ones for the hotel's behind the scenes tour. They have two employees for each guest. Nice flower shop. [They are staying at the Mauna Lani Bay -- this journal entry written on stationary from there and taped into diary.]

January 29, Thursday - Got into CVG at 6:15 [AM presumably, if they left HI on 1/28], took nap in AM and went to office in PM. Five hour time change.

Editor's Note: I'm taking a hiatus from Grandma's post cards (And my scanner is temporarily disabled due to switching to a new computer. Serena, can I make an appointment for assistance upon your return?) to work on Hawaii trips of the past, at least those between 1989-1999 for which I have the diary entries. In addition to the diary entries above, I have five postcards from this trip, two to us, two to Roberta & Sid, and one to Wendy -- Mother included info about Pepsi's 100th Birthday being celebrated there at the same time and that George Bush, Margaret Thatcher and the Rolling Stones (what a trio) were part of the entertainment. Mother says Kona B&B would be "wonderful place to have our reunion." We will be stopping in Kona.

Friday 1999 - [to Pittsboro NC] Leave for Greensboro NC, Delta escape weekend for $79.  Staying at Fearrington House, near Chapel Hill for two nights.  Room #15, their standard room, which is $165/night.  Had dinner there for $59 a person, too much food.  We were there for two hours.  Tea hour was from 4-5pm, which was very bountiful.  Room had CD player and hot roads for the towels.  Fresh flowers in the room.
