1980 Family Letter to Mie Young & Family -July 30

Tuesday --
July 30, 1980
Dear Kim, Mie Young and all -

We are really looking forward to Mie Young's visit and do hope and pray that all goes well for her coming and stay with us.  Perhaps Mary Virginia has already written you in regard to the date of her arrival.  The Ohio Youth Choir in which Mary Virginia is participating is not disbanded until Sunday, August 24th, so wonder if that wouldn't be a good day for Mie Young's coming into Columbus.  I do regret that they both won't be here when school begins August 19th but as we won't be home either it is the only way we see that things could be arranged.

Traveling by bus does give one a much better idea of the immenseness of the United States but there are disadvantages too especially for a young girl traveling by herself and perhaps not being too sure of the language might present some difficulties.  I would hesitate to send Mary Virginia that way under similar circumstances but this is just my suggestion -- AmTrak (train) would be an idea in that she would be able to get her meals and get more personal attention under the circumstances.  Our daughter Serena might be able to meet her in Chicago and see that she gets on a bus or another train for the rest of the trip.  But John says that AmTrak no longer stops in Columbus.  This is just an idea.  When buying her ticket (air) it might be much more reasonable to buy the whole way (with stops) than to purchase the transportation separately.

Don't worry about Mie Young's expenses as far as room and board are concerned.  We will let you take care of her traveling and clothing allowances but that should be minimal once she arrives here.  Casual clothing such as jeans and t-shirts are okay for school and MV wears mostly skirts and blouses and jackets and in cold weather slacks even to church.  No doubt she has written Mie Young about clothes.  I don't know how severe the winters are in Seoul but we have had two bad ones out of three in the last couple of years.  Last winter was mild compared to the two previous ones and hope this one coming up will be like it.

We leave this Thursday for Hawaii and plan to attend the meetings of the American Bar Association there and then spend a little less than two weeks with Catherine and her family in Oregon.  She and her husband Gerry have a little girl, Wendy, who will be three in September.  A daughter by Gerry's previous marriage is also spending the summer with them.

Roberta was just here for a week and just drove back to Arizona getting there last night.  It has been over 100ยบ there most of the summer and we had a real hot spell while she was here but the humidity is so much higher here.

Serena arrived the day Roberta left -- too bad that Roberta couldn't have stayed longer as they didn't get to see each other.  Serena is going back this weekend -- she lives in Chicago and works at the Loyola University library there.

John and Carol were down this last Saturday -- they live in Newark, Ohio, where John works in a bank so we get to see them more of them than the other three.

Mother Uible was in the hospital in June for an operation but is doing fine now -- still confined to a wheelchair but insists on living alone in her big house on Main Street.

This summer has gone by so quickly with so much company and things going on but we are looking forward to having Mie Young with us and will be waiting to hear more about the actual time of her arrival.

With Love,

1970 Serena's postcard to GHU -July 28

Caption: THE WALL OF WINDOWS.  Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah Horseback trail party passing the spectacular "Wall of Windows".  Grotesquely beautiful ep??? and flaming colors combine at Bryce for an unforgettable scenic experience.

[postmarked Grand Junction CO, July 28, 1970]

Hi!

It was awfully cold about 40ยบ.  This western climate does not agree with me it's either too hot or too cold.  This summer I've read 16 books, only two on this trip.  Thanks again for the money.

Love,
Serena

1970 HH's Postcard to GHU -July 25

Caption:  A view of Monsanto Company's attraction "Adventure Thru Inner Space" in Disneyland.  Located in the newly expanded Tomorrowland, the futuristic building houses a ride through the inner space of a snowflake, in a vehicle called an "Atomobile".  The rider feels the unusual illusion of shrinking to the size of the atom.

Sat. Eve.

Camped out two nights in Yosemite & we all went on a 2 hr. horseback ride this morning.  M.V. did better than her parents.  Ha.  Things are few & far apart here in Nevada.  Visited an old mining town this P.M. -- was 30,000 -- now 500 people.  See you next weekend.

1990 John's Thank You card -July 26

July 26, 1990
Mom & Dad,

I intended to get a note off to you several weeks ago.  I want you to know how much it means to me that you not only have encouraged me but have also decided to commit financially toward my work with Frontiers.  You have been most generous -- as you have demonstrated so many times.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Do plan to come out for several visits.

The meeting with my mission committee went well.  They probably won't know how much support they can offer until December.  I hope to send out my letters next week.  I have a list of about 140 people to mail to.

I have been spending all my free time with Julie since she's been home.  She moves to Champaign Aug. 14th.

Give my love to Grandma and the Hortons.  Should I send their letter to Lake Worth or to New Vienna?

Thanks again.

Love in Christ,
John

[postmarked 26 July 1980, Wichita KS]

Hi!  Had a good trip to Augusta -- got in about 6:30 -- thanks to the full cooler -- at all of our meals & snacks from it -- Mrs. Moore appreciated the apples --

Now in Pratt, KS -- 539 miles today -- Rt 24 out of Quincy to KC -- then 35 to Wichita -- Rt 54 now.  Good road -- very little traffic.  Thinking of M.V. tonight -- getting about 39 mpg -- not bad considering the heavy load.  Today cool & cloudy -- good for travelling.  Jut now had some good N.V. yogurt/granola -- also jumped 20 -- high quality Wells rope --

Love, Roberta
Thanks for all!

1990 MV's letter -July 24

7/24/90
Dear Mom & Dad --

Have been writing the family & thought of a couple things I didn't tell you on the phone, so wanted to send off a quick note.

I will be singing at Wilmore United Methodist on Sunday, Aug. 5th for the main service if you'd like to combine that with a visit that weekend.  If you're available we could make reservations for you at Beeson Manor, Shakertown, Red Roof (or you could share our twin bed in the spare bedroom)!

The other thing is that we ordered the reprints of wedding pictures today -- I couldn't remember exactly what you wanted beside the one of the family and the one cutting the cake, so I picked out 3 others I thought you'd like.  They are supposed to be in app. 2 weeks.  The check you gave me I wrote for pictures for you & us plus for the wedding I am in at Thanksgiving for the dress and shoes for bridesmaid.  I hope this was okay.

Hadn't really communicated with Roberta or Catherine since ? (the wedding?) so I wrote them a letter (individually).  J.B. said Roberta had told him we weren't taking the job in Georgia . . . so I wanted to squelch rumors.  We don't know what we'll be doing until we get any offers.  If Georgia is the only thing offered, we may go.  It's hard to tell what will happen in the next 2-3 months.

No more word on Don's grandmother, so we're assuming she's okay.  No news is good news.  Geneva (Don's mom) was going to drive back to Lubbock for a couple days to rest & check her mail.  Out of the 9-10 living children in the family (and tons of grandchildren) 2-3 are doing all the care for her.  (I can't imagine -- his Grandmother (deceased) Crowson had 14 children & Grandmother Self had 12!!)

If you have not sold the van by the time we go to Canada (8/8) we'd like to borrow it since it is  more comfortable and has air conditioning.  If you sell it, don't worry about it.  Don't hang on to it just so we can take it!  That would not be $ smart.  Off to put this in the mail.

Love,
MV & Don

1980 Family Letter -July 24

7-24-70
Dearest Catherine, Gerry, Wendy and Dee Dee,

Realized that we would be late getting a letter off to you especially when we would see the others soon or have just seen them.  Roberta and Marion have been here since Friday and plan to leave tomorrow morning - wish that they could stay longer but R. has to be back in Mesa next Tuesday in order to be at work Wed. morning.  She had promised to be back before the end of the month to finish up the monthly reports.  If she weren't driving back she wouldn't have to leave so soon but is taking the car back that Marion drove to Illinois in June but her back bothers her too much to drive it back by herself in August.

Mary Virginia is having her concert (her own idea and working) at the church Saturday night or she might help Roberta with the driving but R can't wait til Sunday to start.  John and Carol are coming down for it and called Serena and found out that she is coming in late Friday night as Debbie Haines is coming home the same weekend.  We had thought that Serena had planned to go to Kansas City as she has a week's vacation next week -- thought something might work out for her to accompany R that far.  Anyway we are glad to hear that she is coming home but really surprised too.

Dad mailed the shirts to you all today so should be getting them soon -- he sent them to the Co-op.  If there are any that you don't want to keep we will pick them up in August.  Roberta was able to find two that had Arizona State on them -- gave one to Vanessa for her birthday.  It was good talking to you Tuesday AM and look forward to your next call.  The rain that day finally broke the heat spell we have had for quite a few days -- seems like it's either extra hot or extra cool but these last few days have been real nice.  The humidity hasn't been so bad.  Heard Meachem Oregon had the coldest spot in the country this morning.

Mary Virginia had a game last night and another tonight and their team won both games -- tonight's was with a team that just got started playing -- only played three innings and it was 41-0.  They ran short of players and Marion and our coach even got in and helped them out.

Ruth got home from the hospital on Sunday and is staying with the Colliers.  Isn't allowed to lift over three pounds nor able to do much.

Roberta talked to Linda Rollins Davenport who played on last night's ball team -- she is the only one in her family to graduate from college and is working at Lebanon Correctional Institute as a social worker.  Has a boy about 8 and a little girl.

The Hortons are back home after the big heat wave in North Carolina while visiting Cris.  Next month they plan to meet Joe in New York along with Marianne and Larry K.

Monday we -- Marion, Roberta and I -- went to Columbus where R visited a couple of nutrition centers and saw John and Carol.  MV had her music lesson so didn't go.

John and Carol are coming Saturday afternoon after they attend some political meeting at the governor's mansion in Columbus and have to be back in Newark early Sunday morning as they have just taken over the teaching of a young people's Sunday school class and hate to miss the second Sunday.  May stay overnight but will probably go back Saturday evening.

Don't have any idea how many people will come to the concert -- MV had originally wanted to serve refreshments and I suggested just punch but now she doesn't want to have anything.  Tim Larrick is playing for her.  She had originally asked Denise Stewart but her father has been very sick this summer and so she wasn't able to do it so MV has Tim who is very good.

We are due to leave this Thursday and school begins the day we get back so the summer will be over -- it has really gone fast.  Mie Young Kim is coming in about the same time -- hopefully not until the 24th the day MV finishes with the Ohio State Youth Choir.  She has to be at the fairgrounds to begin practicing Aug. 8 and the fair is the 12-24.

I'l leave some space for Dad to add a note --

Not sure how long a note should be -- we are having a bumper apple crop, i.e. apple sauce is one of our staples -- sorry it is not practical to share the apples with you folks.

Grandma is fine -- you would never know she had been in the hospital.  She had plans to come out west this fall, visiting both you folks and Roberta, the schedule depends on when Joe Horton will be here in NV.

Love,
[Mom & Dad]

1980 Catherine's Letter -July 22

July 22, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, Roberta & Mary,

Hi!  I have been trying to get hold of you folks since Saturday on the telephone.  My efforts have been frustrated though as our phone has been on the blink (Unable to get dial tone -- the phone company is putting a new system here which is supposed to improve that problem) and when I do get through I either get a busy signal or you aren't at home!  Perhaps I will talk to you before this letter arrives.

My Data Analyst School went fairly well last week.  I learned some new ways of doing things and some additional things they want us to do for our annual ratio report which will be due in November.  That is what all our efforts throughout the year are for is this big report in November which basically is the recommendations for the amount to be increased on property values in all areas and property classes that are not reappraised during the year.  I just wish more people in our office here in Jefferson County were more enthused about their jobs.  They are not at all inspiring except perhaps for the cartographer.  Driving to Bend every day was a drag but at least I was able to use the county car and leave Gerry with the truck.

We took another raft trip down the Deschutes on Sunday afternoon.  We went with our friends Jeff & Shirley.  They have an inflatable kayak and we borrowed a raft.  They left their daughter with Shirley's mother (Wendy's babysitter) so we left Wendy also.  DeeDee enjoyed the trip though.  Since it was our second trip we knew more what to expect and I think we enjoyed it more than the first trip.  Jeff's father picked us up at our destination and took us back to Warm Springs to get the truck.

Wendy is doing OK. I'm having problems getting her to sleep at night though.  She goes to bed fine but after I leave the room she gets up and turns on her light and plays with her toys or reads her books.  last night twice after I thought she was asleep and we had gone to bed I got up to find her awake.  The first time she had come out in the living room and was reading her books.  The second time she had spread all her toys out in her bedroom and was playing.  I finally had to put her to bed with us to get her to sleep and this was at 1:00 a.m.

DeeDee suffered a big disappointment yesterday as she has a friend in Idaho who was to come down to see her next week (we were going to meet half-way to pick her up) and then her friend called yesterday and said she had decided not to come.  Otherwise I think she is having a fairly good time this summer.  We are hoping to go somewhere this weekend -- maybe the coast.

Gerry is still very busy at work.  He has the new part-time woman to help him but no man as yet.  Fred's idea of hiring is to wait until someone walks in the door so it could take awhile.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
DeeDee & Wendy

1980 Family Letter -July 17

Thursday --
July 17, 1980
Dearest Family --

We got back from New York last night and are gradually getting back into the swing of things again.  We did have a nice 5 days.  The party at Lynn Sanker's in-laws was a feast and the setting for the wedding celebration was beautiful.  Turned out they had had the actual ceremony the morning before in the judge's chamber of the courthouse but went through another one of sorts with the parents of David marching with him into a wooded grove followed by the attendants and lastly Lynn accompanied by her parents.  Each (David and Lynn) spoke their vows to each other -- David you could barely hear but Lynn really hammed it up in a dramatic voice that all could hear.

A reception was held following this and then about a seven course meal -- which reminded us much of Cris's wedding reception and dinner.  They also had a band and at least we got some exercise between the many courses.  We took Bruce to La Guardia airport to get a plane for Cincinnati as he had to be back by 8 AM Monday to take a phys ed course.  He was only allowed one cut and had taken that on Friday when they had driven over.  Bruce wasn't in the wedding but Lowell was -- they each had two attendants.

Both David and his sister graduated from Harvard and were Phi Beta Kappas.  His mother teaches English but has alot of scientific background and has had articles published in the Journal of (teaching of English).  His father is in the box making business and also sculpts with any number of his things around plus many others -- All the wedding and reception plans seemed to be in their hands.  Mrs. Garvin sang and recited original songs and poetry that she had composed about every group at the Saturday evening party.  The best man gave a toast at the wedding reception followed by a LONG toast that David's sister had composed for her toast.

They had made reservations for all the wedding guests at the Howard Johnson Motel in Paramus and it took us country people a while to get used to the CITY traffic.  John's former roommate Steve Weiss's home was just a few blocks from the Garvin's home.

Tried a different hotel in NYC -- the Seymour which really had a good deal on the garage at just $5.30, about half the going rate.  We splurged Monday evening in eating out at an Italian Restaurant, Roma di Grotto, which did have a lot of atmosphere, etc. etc.  Tuesday morning we took a tour of the J.C. Penney Hdqs. and was especially interested in their testing lab.  They didn't include toys in the regular toy group (there were about 8 of us -- one from South Africa -- but we asked about seeing the toys and they took us two back up.  We had lunch at the Beansprout Restaurant, you can guess that is a health food type place, which was good.  We drove to about 9 that evening to Clarion, Pa. and stayed at Holiday Inn, who had a family plan.  The next noon we were in Columbus where we went to a Mexican Restaurant.  MV said they never got much Mexican food in Mexico as their teacher was afraid they would all get sick.  Wednesday was a HOT day here -- close to a 100ยบ and in the News-Journal the next night they had a picture of part of I-71 that had buckled from the heat.

Libby Milburn, one of the foreman at Wells was burning some trash at home last night and threw some gasoline on the fire, and unfortunately she rec'd severe burns over her body and will be hospitalized for at least a week.  Her husband [Ralph?] has the Pizza place on the corner where we used to live.

Mary Va. seemed to have enjoyed her stay at Hudson Guild.  There is no canteen, but Mrs. Thompson said they were having a good program over last year, but not up to the type program in the "old days" that some of you were active.  Their office mgr. is from Roseburg, Or.  -- Mrs. Reem said "he didn't catch on as quick as John".

1990 Serena's Letter -July 14

July 14, 1990

Dear Everyone,

I am sitting in my office among bags, boxes and other miscellaneous belongings that I have recently moved, but somehow I have not found a spot for many of them at least not one that is anything approaching satisfactory.  I decided to take time out from feeling conscience-stricken for not having done more unpacking this week-end and write to everyone so that at least I could feel less ashamed about SOMETHING.

My office -- doesn't that sound better than the room with a computer and boxes of books and papers in it -- is actually the least cluttered room in the house.  Of course that could be because it has the most boxes that are still completely full.  Ah well, is the glass half full or half empty?

I feel rather disoriented at home -- there is so much room, so much STUFF -- to put away, to find, to throw away (now that I've moved it).  My bewilderment only increases at work.  There WAS an office for the former director, but nobody has used it for over a year (except to store huge, ugly, useless junk) and so construction dirt and the smell of mold clobbers my senses as soon as I open the door.  Then, there is the future office of the director which has about 10 chairs, two large tables, an almost totally empty file cabinet, three closets, and at least 15 electrical outlets.  There is no phone, or even a phone jack, no desk, no book case.  It is beautiful and new, but at least at this point it leaves a number of things to be desired.  The exhilaration of starting a new job, particularly where a construction job was in progress is sometimes hard to express.

I am the current Greenville Public Library director.  The library has a staff of about twenty and a district of about 25,000 possible patrons.  Everybody seems very gracious at least so far.  It is amazing how many people want to meet the new library director -- some of them aren't even looking for a job or tying to sell something, some of them just want to complain.  I suppose that this is my fifteen seconds of fame, somehow I always thought fame would be more fun -- instead it feels like they are betting on how long before I'll be tarred, feathered and run out of town.  Well, I still have secretarial skills -- there's a comforting thought.

I am now living in Greenville, Ohio.  Even though many people have never heard of Greenville, it is famous for Annie Oakley, Lowell Thomas, the Treaty of Greenville, and, of course, the renowned Darke County Fair.  Okay, it isn't Paris, but then Paris isn't Greenville either.

Thanks to all of you who have written recently -- I cherish both of those letters and the postcard.  Okay, I admit I haven't exactly spent a fortune on postage either, but I am sure that my excuse is better than your excuse -- whatever yours is -- just let me know in your next letter.

My new address is 1339 Chippewa, Greenville, Ohio  45331.  My home telephone number is 513/548-9821.  Yes I still have that obnoxious answering machine.  My work telephone number is 513/548-3915, but please don't call me at work for at least another two months, by then we may actually have working telephone jacks that go up to the remodeled area, including my office.

Anyway, do drop me a line sometime . . .

Love,

Serena Uible

Dear Grandma & Hortons,
How are you all doing?  Life has been hectic here.  I hear you are doing really well, Grandma -- are you enjoying the summer weather?

1990 Serena's new job - clipping July 16

Serena Uible arrives as Greenville
library's new top administrator
by Linda Moody, Features Editor, The Daily Advocate, Monday July 16, 1990

Serena Uible, Greenville Public Library's new administrator/librarian, grew up in Ohio near Wilmington in the small community of New Vienna.

She comes to Greenville from Illinois, where she served as a public services librarian at Alpha Park Public Library in Alpha Park, Ill., a suburb of Peoria.  She described that position as her first professional job.

Uible said she has been getting acquainted with the patrons of the library.

"It's very nice" she said.  "Carnegie buildings are very nice buildings.  The library I just left has about the same population.  The library was 20-years-old and the building was 4-years-old."  She said the two communities -- are "very different."

"Peoria was kind of a caterpillar industry town," she said.  "I am looking forward to working in Greenville."

She has also served other libraries such as the Kansas City, Mo., Public Library; the Loyola at the University of Chicago; and at Indiana University.  At those facilities, she did reference work and circulation.

She received her undergraduate college degree in political science from Park College, Kansas City, Mo., and her graduate degree in library science from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1988.

Her favorite literary works are fiction and biographies.

"I read almost anything, but not a lot of math, engineering, and car mechanical books," she said.

Sara Paretsky, a mystery writer, and Alice Hoffman, a fiction writer, are her favorite authors.

In addition to reading, Uible enjoys bicycling.

"I am looking forward to bicycling around town," she said.  "I also like outdoor activities, such as swimming.

Uible has been working in libraries since junior high.

"I tried a number of things, but decided to come back to library work," she said.

A resident of Peoria for two years, she was a member of the Jaycees there.

Uible's father, Harold, is an attorney, living in New Vienna with wife Jean, who is a retired librarian.  There are four other siblings in the family, the oldest sister of whom is also a librarian.

Uible said she liked living in Chicago, where she resided for eight years.

"I went to a lot of plays and heard classical music," she said.  "There are a lot of cultural events in Darke County."

She said the third floor of the local library was recently renovated and noted the staff will work on moving things around.

1990 Catherine's Letter -July 15

[Fort Collins, Colorado, Jerry's RV]
Saturday, July 14, 1990
Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  I have several newsworthy items to report as we end our first week in Fort Collins.  Gerry is working today, Wendy is at the Motel watching TV and I'm at the Laundromat -- now, to get to the "newsworthy" items:

  1.  Jerry's RV has decided to close their store in Glendale
  2. Gerry and Jim (former service mgr. at Robert Crist and then Jerry's) have decided to open an RV parts & service business in Glendale.
  3.  We need $20,000 additional capital.
Both Robert Crist and Jerry's closed because of lack of RV sales.  Although the parts and service departments were doing well they couldn't support the flooring of unsold units.  Gerry and Jim feel that they can make a go of this since they have a customer base, a good location (they'll take over Jerry's lease on August 1), and they have worked together long enough that they can handle this as equal partners.

Gerry is going to continue working for Jerry's RV on a consultant type basis in Fort Collins for the next couple months.  This is the busy season here and the parts dept. is a total mess.  Jerry will pay expenses plus salary so this will help our cash flow until the Glendale business picks up.

As soon as we get back to Arizona we plan to call our tenants in Oregon and put our house there on the market.  This would give us the additional capital, the only problem being we can't count on it selling immediately.

Would you consider loaning us the money until the house sells?  We could pay interest in the meanwhile and if the house doesn't sell within 6 months we could make payments after that.  Our hope is to price it attractively enough that it would sell fairly quickly.

Wendy and I have been doing vacation type stuff this week -- horseback riding, miniature golf, shopping (she bought some nice summer clothes on clearance that she'll be able to wear to school) and of course visiting the library.  On Monday we're going to take a tour of Colorado State University.

The clothes are almost dry so I better get ready to fold.  I'll call when we get back home.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1970 Joe's Postcard -Jul.15

Hotel du Gouvernement, Quebec

Dear Everyone,

Sorry I've not written sooner but I give the same story -- I'm so busy.  My classes begin at 7 A.M. and finish at 8 P.M.  This week I've taught two adult classes which have lasted until 9 P.M.  (go to sleep, go to classes -- that's my life!)  Canada is beautiful!  I've met some good friends who are going to Ivory Coat so I hope to change countries.  It's not certain yet.  I miss everyone, New Vienna and Cincy!

Love, Joe

1969 Catherine's postcard to Serena "Sue" -Jul.13

[Addressed to Miss Sue Uible, Camp Adahi, Cloudland, GA - postmarked July 13, 1969]

Hi!  Hope you are having a good time at camp.  I don't really have anything to write but I thought maybe you would like to get some mail so here is this.  Are you making lots of friends?  Is the dirt red?  Are you eating your vegetables and getting enough sleep?  These questions are so you will have something to say in the post card or letter which you now owe me.  You will find my address printed at the top of this card for your convenience.  HA!  Have a good time

Love,
Catherine

1970 Roberta's Letter -July 12

July 12, 1970
Dear Family,

Hello!  Well,  About 10:00 A.M. they called us over to building #10.  They are laying off about 2,000 people.  We were about the 140th ones.

Tuesday we go file for unemployment.  I looked it up in Daddy's Baldwins books -- those blue things.  We should get about $46 a week.  A slight cut in pay!!  Ho, Hum.

They didn't even let us work Friday -- I guess they even sent some people home at noon.

I took the S.A.T.  Oh, golly.  I hope they said I just have to take it -- not PASS it!!  School seats are harder & more uncomfortable than I even remembered them!

Oh, Daddy, I have a paper from George Fox College for you to sign.  It's about finances.

I think I'm going to get a paper-route or sell Amway or something.  Make me a little money on the side.  Without the unemployment people finding out!

Grandma went to Leesburg with Mrs. Moore today to eat.  I told her she had her nerve.  She said she had invited me first but I had already made plans.  Oh.  Well.  Next Sunday - - -

I'm enjoying my paid vacation.  See you all when you get here.

Love,
Bert

P.S. I really feel like an adult now getting unemployment!!

1980 Catherine's Letter -July 11

Friday, July 11, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, & Mary,

Hi!  I'm off to a late start with the letter this week but I figured you weren't going to be home to get it anyway.

I had my first case of jury duty on Tuesday.  The judge said it would be a short case.  It took all day.  Maybe that is the definition of a short case.  This 22-year-old guy had his driver's license suspended three times but because he was not living at the address which the Department of Motor Vehicles had for him he never received the notifications that his license was suspended.  He therefore pleaded not guilty to driving with a suspended license.  We found him guilty since he had neither checked at his mailing address to see if he had any mail or changed his address.

Wendy and I both got our hair trimmed yesterday.  Her bangs have now grown out almost as long as her hair so we are going to let her hair grow.  I am also letting my hair grow out but I hope to keep it curly -- it's called a gypsy style.

Tomorrow the Elks are having a picnic which we are going to.  We are supposed to bring our own hamburgers, buns, and a salad.  We have alot of eggs as Gerry buys them from a woman at work for 40¢ a dozen so I will probably fix deviled eggs.

Gerry has been super busy at work.  I think I may have mentioned that his helper, Judy, quit as she got a job in Bend.  They are going to hire a part-time woman and a full time man to help him but so far he only has the part-time woman who he is in the process of training.  Also the farmers just started cutting their grass.  They do it at night so that the seeds won't fall off of the stalks (they are harvesting the seed) so he gets lots of calls at night.  Wednesday night or actually Thursday morning he had to go down to the Co-op at 4:00 a.m.  At least he has tomorrow off and someone else will be there during the day so we'll have a few hours of peace.

Last weekend Gerry put up a clothesline for me.  It is an umbrella style and has about 220 feet of line.  I had been hanging them up in the garage but outside is much nicer and keeps the garage from looking like a laundromat.  He had to dig a hole down through the ledge in the backyard about 15 inches deep and then fill it with concrete.  I have done a few loads this week but looking forward to hanging several out tomorrow.

Well, it is our lunch hour and it is now almost time to go back to work so I better close.  We got your letter yesterday, thanks!  Hope to hear form you again soon.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry, DeeDee & Wendy

1980 Kyung Ho Kim letter -July11

July 11, '80
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Uible,

I was very delighted to receive your kind letter dated June 10, 1980.  Mie Young is so much excited to visit your family in very near future.

Her younger sister, In Young (7th) & younger brother Young Duk (6th) are already saying that they are going to miss her very much.

Well, as you know, her aunt's family and some other relatives are living at LA. area, so Mie Young's plan is to go to L.A. on first part of August and she is going to stay a couple weeks before visit you.

It seems to me that your family will be back to New Vienna around 20th of August.

Mie Young will contact your Catherine's place in Madras, Oregon or your residence in New Vienna before she departs from L.A.  I think she visit you a little better when you are staying home.

I suggested to go to New Vienna from L.A. by Greyhound bus for some good experience.  I really think that it's good for herself which she can see something and feel about your country, where she is going to stay for a long time.

Well, Aug. of 1957 I had same experience which I took Greyhound bus from San Francisco to Chicago.  I remember it took about 2 and half days.  My first impression of America was that it was a very big modern country.  Compared to small over-crowded Korea, this country was as vast as an ocean.  Thinking of my mother country, I could not help enjoying this big and rich country at that time.  I became even more determined to learn more, in order to help Korea better herself.

Please don't hesitate to let us know that Mie Young's average living expenses such as foods & beverages, etc. per month.  We are willing to remit some money for her occasionally.  Of course, later on she can work a part-time job at somewhere, and earn some money for her own use.

Please have a nice and valuable meeting and vacation with your children where scattered around in U.S.A. (best regards to all your children.)

May I pray for your family and your church, wherever you may be to be given a great blessing of our Father, and our family will be most glad to hear from you soon again.

I shall always appreciate your generosity, kindness and wonderful friendship very much.

With warm personal regards, I am,

Very Cordially yours,
Kyung Ho Kim

Please forgive my poor letter and terrible hand-writing.  So Long!

Best regards to Dr. & Mrs. Hause and Dr. & Mrs. Yong Jin Kim (487 Indian Ripple Road, Wilmington).  I know Mrs. Kim very well since High School days in our church.

1990 Wendy's Letter -July 9

July 9, 1990
Dear Grandma & Granpa,

How are you?  I'm great.  Camp was fun.  Right now I'm on a plane going to Colorado.  The place we are actually going to Fort Collins is 50 miles north of Denver.

We just finished a complimentary snack which was a small bag of M&M's, cheese crackers, pumpernickel bread, and to top it off cheese spread with ground up vegetables in it.  Now we are sharing a bag of Lay's barbecue potato chips that I bought in the airport.  One ounce of chips is 150 calories.

Aunt Roberta took us to the Airport.  Mother is reading a book called memory by Margaret Mahy.  We are going to land soon so I have to go.

Love, Wendy

P.S. Write soon

[Note:  Gerry worked that summer in Fort Collins for an RV dealer that had previously had a store in Glendale.  Shortly after that Best West RV opened and Gerry returned to Glendale.]

1980 Family Letter -July 5

July 5, 1980
Dearest Family --

Have really gotten the days mixed up since the holiday of the Fourth of July came on Friday.  Missed having you all home but didn't know we would have Mary Virginia with us as they hadn't planned to get back until Sunday morning sometime.  A number of things caused the foul-up which I'll explain later rather than in the letter but it was a different experience for them.  We woke up hearing noises in the house Thursday morning and rather surprised to see Mary Virginia in her bed.

Wednesday night opened the Fourth of July celebration in New Vienna with a community church service down in the park.  As Grandma said they had enough program for several services.  One group in particular kept singing -- perhaps it could have been termed a filibuster.

Wednesday night was also Lions Club meeting, the new Friends minister spoke on agriculture in India, which is his home country.  He is a very friendly person, tho sometimes hard for me to catch all his words.

Harold Thornburg met Jim Wise at the Cincinnati airport as Rev. Wise had the service for John Cooper on Tuesday.  The Coopers had just been to Lakeside two weeks as our delegates and understood that John was to give a report of the activities tomorrow at Church.

Thursday night was Square Dance night -- we alternate workshops . . . where we practice . . . with dances, which are more of a dress up occasion.  There was a big crowd as a group came from both Hillsboro and Washington C.H.  We heard they are starting a new club in Greenfield, Ohio.

Friday morning we got some odd jobs around the house done and then went downtown for the chicken barbeque at noon.  The parade was at 2 P.M. and Grandma's porch makes an excellent reviewing stand.  Gene Drake was in it with his bike -- he had asked Dad to join him in next year's 4th of July parade.  After the parade we even picked a few cherries -- every day they are a little bit riper.  The transparent apples are now coming on for eating and apple sauce.

Kay Wolfrom works at Kings Island and she had a pass for her family to come as guests last night, so they invited us as "grand-parents.  We saw the aerial show where a fellow goes up in a balloon and also four people who bail out of a plane "way up in the sky" and land on the point in front of everyone.  We did ride the roller coaster, but they had cut the line for the "Beast" which is suppose to be worse one -- perhaps we were lucky.  Did ride on a log ride and only got about 25% wet.  After getting home at 1 A.M. morning came all too early.

Back to N.V.'s event -- they had a jail where anyone, with a $ could swear out a warrant and put you in jail for 15 minutes (unless you wanted to pay another dollar to get out), which seemed like a real money maker.

Really happy to hear about Serena's new position as reference librarian at Loyola.  -- congratulations!!  Hope you really enjoy the work and may continue in library work -- going  on to school if that is your desire.

Catherine attended her first library board meeting of the Madras P.L. last week so stands that much better chance of taking over when the present librarian retires.  [I was on a "revenge" mission to get on the library board, as when we moved to Madras, she had refused to give me a library card as I did not have the proper Oregon ID and was not employed!  Had to get Gerry to get a library card for us to use.   The librarian who did retire shortly thereafter, recently died at age 99.]

Mary Virginia sang at Autumn Years Nursing Home in Sabina yesterday -- John Cooper had been going each Sunday afternoon & had asked her to sing three or four weeks ago.  It was voiced that we should carry this on for John so at least MV is doing her part -- she was the only one who went yesterday.  We wanted to go with her but she preferred that we not -- said that we would make her more nervous.

Thanks so much for the box of cards we just received from you, Mary [MUH] of Joe's lithographs.  It was appreciated though I wasn't hinting.

[Love, etc.]

1970 Serena's Letter -July 2

[envelope addressed to John and Mary Virginia, postmarked Morrow, Ohio - July 2, 1970]

Hi!

In my tent are: Dolly, Denise, and Darci.  Sorry I haven't written but I've been terribly busy.

I am in Sassafras.  The CITs (Counselors in Training) are with us or really it's the other way around.

Tisa (?) is in Timber Ridge (across from Sherwood).  Her unit leader is Marty who was mine my first year.  Those of us are here that were here my first year.  In our unit there are 9 seniors , 4 CITs and two counselors.  Yesterday 2 of us seniors helped Kroll put up a round up tent.  The first 2nd night we all went to Timber & taught them songs.

We've cooked out twice this morning & Wed. evening.  Both were delicious.  For lunch today we are the CITs guests.  The food here is rotten the only thing that is any good is the bread.  They say that all the food is the kind that all you have to do is take it out and heat it.  There are 165 campers here & 37 counselors.

I have a little poison ivy but nothing to worry about.  I've gotten 3 post cards & Kim's letter.

Last night we helped the CITs babysit with the younger kids while the counselors had a meeting we played baseball, kickball, and sang songs until about nine then we went to the Evergreen & showed a bunch of movies (Lister [?], Wonderful World of Ohio, & Here's Girl Scouting or something & a few other such "great" movies.  We served them lemonade & pop corn.  The counselors meeting wasn't over until a little after midnight by then most of the kids were on the floor sleeping.

A couple nights ago we, Seniors, had a party but by 12 or so I got too sleepy so fortunately the party was in the other tent so I went to bed (I was the only one).  The others didn't go to bed till 2 or 3 but by that time I had slept quite a bit.  The next morning I woke up to someone yelling hey and shaking my shoulders then turning around I came fact to face with Margaret, the water front director.  She was coming back from a Lifesaving Class.  She asked me if we were cooking out or eating in the lodge.  At the moment I didn't know what she was even talking about, so she repeated her question & I gave a very sleepy answer.  She then said that if I were going to breakfast in the lodge that we had 20 min. & 5 min. to flag ceremony!  We unanimously decided to skip breakfast in favor of sleep.  So after about 15 min. of rest our adopted counselor, Phyllis, told us that if we didn't get to breakfast we are going to be in big, big trouble.  As it is against the rules to skip.  We made it just in time.

For supper I was a table head as there were not enough counselors.  Unfortunately only 1 of the 8 kids were cadettes.  I got the girl who is known as the terror of the camp & five other real livewires.

Starting Monday I'm going on a bike ride with Cedar Trails, the bicycling unit.  It is to last until Thursday that's about all I know about right now.  There are only 10 in their unit.

I have only one request for lunch July 4th that is this PLEASE no packaged or canned food.

It has been raining off and on all day.  Which has ruined most everything.

Tomorrow morning we have flag ceremony.  We also hop.  Which means we have to set the tables, get the food, & stuff like that.

Tuesday night & tonight we have had exploring where you have a variety of things to do.  I've done archery & gone fishing with a holey fish net.

Well I had better be signing off as morning seems to come earlier every morning.

Love to all,
Serena Sue Uible

P.S. this letter has been about 3 days in the making.

Hi!  Sorry I keep forgetting to mail this.  In about 10 minutes I am going to leave on a bike trip.  I don't know anything more about it.  I must finish packing.  Time now - 7:20 in the morning.

1980 Catherine's Letter -July 1

Tuesday, July 1, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad & Mary,

Hi!  Here I am at work on my "coffee break." I have the library board meeting at noon today so I am not going out for my usual break.

Things have been pretty hectic at home since I talked to you on Friday.  We had some friends over for dinner on Friday.  They have a little girl Wendy's age who goes to the same babysitter (her grandmother) as Wendy on Wednesdays & Thursdays.  That went off fairly well.  We charcoaled some steaks on our hibachi.

Saturday morning we left early for Portland and did some shopping before we picked up DeeDee.  I bought three new pair of slacks -- grey, dark green, and navy blue if you want to remember that for your Velva Sheen shopping.  My other slacks are black, brown and red.  So anything that will go with those colors is fine.  That should cover everything they have!  I checked some of the shirts that I bought last summer -- the women's style and several of them are size large and fit fine although one long sleeve one (that didn't have any decal) is a little big.  P.S. I forgot my burgundy colored slacks.  So you can judge by how big they look.  Gerry has about the same color slacks as I do except I don't think he has any red ones.  Do not be afraid of buying us too many!  I will gladly send you the money now if you prefer.

To go on with our trip to Portland we also bought some more unfinished furniture.  We bought a dresser which we will let DeeDee use for the summer and then it will be Wendy's and also a large cedar box which will be a toy box until Wendy no longer needs such a thing and then it could store anything.  [That box is now located in the loft at the Counts house.]  We put one coat of stain on both of them on Sunday and hope to put a second coat on the dresser tonight.  Then we will put urethane finish on both.

Sunday we went to church with a coffee hour afterwards.  The Jackmans are leaving this week for a three week vacation so there will be substitute preachers for the next few weeks.  The raft trip left Warm Springs bridge at 1:00  There were about 50 people in 10 rafts altogether so that was a good turn out.  It was a fairly calm trip with only a few rapids.  Wendy slept for about half of the 2½ hour trip.  DeeDee was the bailer & another guy that went along with us & Gerry were the navigators so I just relaxed and held on to Wendy.  It was alot of fun, Gerry & I  hope to go on a more difficult trip at some later date.  There was a pot luck picnic at the end of the raft trip.

Our friends the Grinvalds from Klamath Falls (he stayed with us last week) all came this week.  So I left Wendy home to play with them yesterday & today.  We fixed a Mexican dinner for them last night.

Tonight we are going to a pot luck salad or dessert picnic at the Jackman's.  They have invited the whole church in an effort to promote informal fellowship so it will be interesting to see how many show up.

Library board -- interesting -- decided to patch roof -- more later.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy
