1949 Jean's Letter -Feb.4
![]() |
| $150 for the Doctor, and $41.50 for 9-10 days in the hospital. |
Friday
February 4, 1949
Dearest Mother and Daddy,I will soon have been here a week – officially at 4:00 AM tomorrow morning but they keep you so busy it seems like only a couple of days.
We've received the card you addressed for Mr. & Mrs. Yount and many others – Cousin Maude, Janine [or Jeanne?], Mary & Bill, Miss Miller, Miss Grout (with notes added from 4 other librarians of East Cleve.), Mrs. McGonagle and others. Then we both have been getting phone calls – Louise Gilmore, Jean Keil Walker, Mrs. McGonagle, Jeanne Campbell and others ––
Laura Uible called and suggested several doctors – one woman doctor very near us. I told Dr. Weir and he called her this afternoon & she said she'd be out tomorrow morning to look at the baby. She's not a pediatrician but I know that she's the same one that Norma Anderson (who lives across the hall from us with the 6 mo. old baby) goes to.
It's now Saturday evening & almost time for visitors (6:30-8:00). I've felt so neglectful about not writing but the morning is spent with breakfast, feeding and then bathing – By that time, lunch is ready, then feeding time again, then rest period & we're supposed to spend two or three hours flat on our backs with the lamp reflector on our stitches. Then 4:30 dinner & 5 the babies come in. Tonight they were quite short-staffed so we were even later.
The doctor (pediatrician from West side ) didn't get in but no doubt will appear tomorrow.
My new roommate is awfully nice – she had a boy last Wednesday – already has a four year old girl so has given me many pointers on raising a child – good, practical advice. It so happens that she lives on Henderson Road – not far from Mr. McGonagle. She knows her by sight but not personally.
Some woman from the First Baptist Church called me this afternoon – Dr. Phillips had told her I had a new baby. Jeanne Campbell also called – I had asked her to buy me two nursing brassieres and . . .
Catherine is gaining it seems & right now I think I'll be able to nurse her entirely as we never use the bottle they bring in. The nurse says she's so sensitive – doesn't cry but whimpers unless she is handled just so-so.
Of course I'm anxious to get home to have a real family reunion. Hope you'll get over to see us as soon as you can.
Love,
Jean, Harold and
Catherine

1949 Jean's Letter -Jan.24
Sunday 1/24/49
Dearest Mother & Daddy,We just got home from Church (Franklin Circle Christian) and Harold is studying so I thought I'd drop a line before filling that knowing feeling he gets so soon after church. We ate a whole recipe of waffles plus a half a large grapefruit and its still with me.
By the way, Thursday when I went to see Dr. Weir, he said that I hadn't gained any more so wouldn't have to stick to any diet Dr. Bill had suggested.
Tomorrow I'm to go the dentist and meet June Gilbert at 10:00 just an hour before her appointment with him (the same Dr. Davis).
We decided not to paint the bassinet as it looks ok with the lining on it – very nice the lining is – and so it has all been wrapped in a sheet and put away until needed.
The four kimonos and wrapping blankets came yesterday afternoon so I don't need anything at all now. They are all so pretty – nicer than any at the stores here in Cleveland.
I had thank-you notes from Mrs. Cochran and Harriette for the Christmas gifts. I thanked Bob over the phone but guess I should have written. Perhaps I'll write later this afternoon.
We'd love to have you over anytime you can come except just before the 7th (Monday) – which is Harold's hardest exam – that's two weeks from tomorrow. Any other time would suit us OK.
We have been thinking more about names again – especially as two doctors have thought it would be a boy. Do you like the name Timothy Wallace? Better than Wallace Ballantyne? We think we do – would appreciate your opinion in the matter. Haven't chosen Timothy for any special reason – just like the name – also nickname Tim or Timmy.
I finally finished the booties and nightgown (which I trimmed with blue ric-rac). I want to make a couple of bath aprons and still have material cut for another kimono.
Got 4 huge grapefruit at the market yesterday for 25¢. Also 5 pink ones for same price. Nice bananas 10¢ lb., lettuce, celery, pears 3# for 29¢, apples (Jonathan) 3# 29¢, carrots, onions, tangerines, milk – 2 qts of homogenized in carton – 35¢, diced beets (frozen) – 7¢. Bought 55 birth announcements – all they had in one kind – waiting to hear from you about any musts to send to.
Love,
Jean & Harold

1974 GHU Letter -Apr.8
Note from Roberta added at the bottom of the back page is also transcribed below. The date is inferred from the envelope which is postmarked 8 Apr 1974, and a look at the April 1974 calendar which indicates April 8, 1974 was a Monday. Roberta must have made a trip to the post office after the letter was written to have it be postmarked the same day. The envelope has an 8¢ Eisenhower stamp and a 2¢ Frank Lloyd Wright stamp attached for those of you interested in the philatelic information.
Received your letter to-day. I sure am sorry about the check & of course will wonder what happened to it & hope no one tries to cash in on it. I had hoped that some one might find it & return to me, but no luck so far. In the near future will send you a duplicate for the same amount.
Looks as if the church has a problem to raise that given amount but I guess if we all give "generously" it can be met. Will try to give my share when I get home. Right now I am getting papers ready to send out to my Dr. & hospital bills paid by medicare Ins. Total about $1700.00 It is a crime the way they charge, but what can a person do but go along. I know that my right foot is better but my left is not doing so well. At least I went to church service Sun. & was able to wear my shoes. Cris took me & we used the wheel chair. I want to go to Sun school & service next Sun. if all is well.
The Lions have their pancake day at theth Park but Mary & I don't plan to go as there will be salt in everything & Mary doesn't like pancakes anyway. Roberta will be home for the store closes for Easter.
I had Cris to order my plane ticket Sat. for the 27th so hope you can meet me in Cin. that evening Harold I am not sure of the time Harold but I believe it is 5:35 P.M. Will let you know later. I wrote to Mrs. Wilson to day hoping she will open up the house once more. So you two can make your plans hopefully for about the week of the 21st.
Jean if you are any place where a health store operates will you please get me some food that is salt free. That is going to be my problem. I may like to stay a couple of days with you until I get Marie started again. I plan to write a note to her soon. Since I don't walk as much as I did I may have a little trouble but I don't think so. With Mary V's help things will go along fine. We enjoyed your type written letter. (Hope the letter with church check) & Mary V money was sealed & reach N.V. all right.
Cris is getting ready to leave us Wed. He plans to spend a little time with his girl friend in Atlanta. He made a good Mulberry pie last week. I cut the stems off for him & then Fri. we tried bread. He made 3 loaves & it was very good. He enjoys baking.
Notice in the News J. that Mr. Ridgeway is trying to stir up something.
[part from Grandma ends here, and the following is the note from Roberta]
We read about Wilmington in the Wall Street Journal – Wow! Appreciate all the mail from College St. – Mary V. your typing is good! ––Berta

1963 John's T&A Surgery - May 16
Removal of tonsils was fairly standard in the 1950s and 60s and usually occurred prior to starting school. One could look out the Hale Hospital windows and watch the squirrels while eating ice cream during recuperation. Also attached to this paperwork was a check for $15 to Dr. Fullerton. My recollection is he may have served as the anesthesiologist. Pertinent details transcribed below.

Monday 1989 - DP&L, 21 KWH, $52.74 ($1.70/day)
Tuesday 1990 - We went with the Hortons and GHU to Leesburg. The Chicken Pot Pie is $5.95. Roger Littleton brought over the "hoists" to try out. Bev Gooding called wanting Serena's phone # as she had news on the Greenville Library job.
Friday 1992 - DP&L, 23.3 KWH, $58.94
Saturday 1993 - GHU sleepy again, the bright sun did not faze her, weight = 98#. Bought a rocking chair for $25 from David McGrath, the Fairview Friends minister, plus more books. They are moving to London, England, have been here 3 years. Cleaned street and sidewalk at Wells.
Sunday 1994 - Had lunch in Hillsboro, the old Parker House Hotel, Laura Hughes had raved about the place but really quite ordinary buffet. The Hortons got here about 2PM. Barnabas program at church tonight. Trying to do more extra walking, yesterday I walked the loop around Cemetery Rd and today around block twice, 7 minutes each time.
Monday 1995 - Trimmed shrubbery along the fence and also in front of the house. Our ElderHostel tickets came today via Fed Express. Jean went to dinner at CMH, program on dialysis machine.
Wednesday 1996 - Still working on the brief for the Z [Zurface] case. Had Bible Study at the Salisburys. 2 Samuel 12. Esther is sure having trouble getting up and down. Catherine called, think Best West will buy the lot. Funeral for Connie Smith.
Thursday 1997 - Henry Edwards passed on. Article in WNJ re Malcolm Bean planting 1260 walnut trees, mostly north of Port William, will mature in 25 years. Planted 2nd crop of beans and beets. Lots of kids are using the church parking lot. Sent out the Purtee checks, $33,000 to 8 different charities.
Saturday 1999 - [New Hampshire with Roberta] Went on the Mt. Washington COG RR trip. Pat's mother, Lydia, was in the dark as to this as she would have said no. It was a noisy ride up but beautiful weather on top, how lucky. Just there for 20 minutes, total trip 3 hours. $44 each, less 10% for seniors. We had picnic lunch on way down.

County, Virgina [possibly Rockingham, although I can't find any confirmation of this, see Virginia Historical Counties for historical maps or Ohio Historical Counties to zone in on Clinton/Highland County. Change the year in the upper right corner to see the changes through the years], then Hamilton County, etc. First house was near Snow Hill (named after Snow Hill, MD) and nearest place was was about 5 miles away, on what is now Rt. 72 and Carl's West's current home.
Friday 1992 - Water = 617 cubic feet, total $43.91, trash $6.50, sewage $18.32. Took Larry Lyons to 12th District Court of Appeals meeting in Middletown. Planted flowers at GHU's and at Wells. (The Liggetts were connected with Wilmington College through whom we met Kim. They retired to WA and were killed crossing the street.)
Saturday 1993 - [Cleveland] Made a visit to the library at noon, they gave me gloves to look at the old pictures. We had lunch in the Arcade. After the day's [Family Life Conference] session we drove over to W. 25th, the flats (government housing where we lived in the spring of 1949), around the Western Reserve and East Cleveland. Had supper at That Place on Bellflower [closed], then went out Mayfield Road to I-271 to Marc's, they closed at 9PM. Came back through Shaker Heights and ended up on Woodland Ave., hardly the ideal place.
Sunday 1994 - Open Houses in Hillsboro, one was the Historical house where GHU was born. Had a board where Ira H. had written "This House is occupied by my wife and I and 3 children, Harry, Luna and Dorsa, 1886, age 13, 11, and 9. Cost $2500. Thursday 1997 - [Williamsburg to Washington VA] Up Route 3 to T[?] Inn, a nice place -- Catherine is in charge of the reservations. [What???] Oh yes we had breakfast buffet in main dining room, [still at Kingsmill Resort, I think] $11.95 each. Just had yogurt for lunch and got to Washington VA about 5:30, staying at Heritage Bed and Breakfast, $105/night. We are in Amish room, had reservation for a dinner at 6:30 at the Inn at Little Washington, what a 20 year rise they have had. 5 stars for both Inn and meals. We were there two hours, they "gave" us a little bowl of sweets in leaving. Meal was $88 each and the rooms start at $260.

Sunday 1995 - [end of Marriage Encounter weekend] More dialogue. The 90/90 session was an experience. At each meal our name plates were scattered around and then one of the couples were the leaders for a discussion of the topics. It ended about 5PM with other people showing up including our prayer partners. A great experience which should make a good marriage even better. [Catherine and Gerry did the Marriage Encounter experience in 1979.] We ate at Cracker Barrel at Exit 60. Jean had chicken sandwich $3.39 and I had bowl of greens for $2.99. Got gas near Xenia for 99.9c
