1977 Roberta's Letter -Aug.

Sunday
[Aug. 1977]
Dear Family –

Hi – I'm not sure how long it's been since I've written – but wanted to let you all know that I haven't forgotten about you!

Today I started in the dining room – which means that I won't have much time to get bored this week!

Last Tuesday on my day off I had a big day – went to Coney Island – in Brooklyn w/ the Rosario girls – rode all the crazy rides & ate junk food.  The place was really run down – most of the rides, were 75¢ or $1.00 – a big rip-off!

Monday night Kay Levitt & I ate at a Greek restaurant – I had cheese & spinach pie.  Then we saw the play Chicago – it was disappointing – full of bad language & the music wasn't even so great!  Mary Virginia – I want to see Annie!

We are having a heat wave up here now – for so long it was really cool!

All the staff is gone now but J.B., myself, & ? & Donnie.  The place is really full – all the old-timers – most w/ cars which makes the driving easy.  Tomorrow if men have to catch the 6:00 bus – going into work.

I had a letter from Marion – they got to Columbus Friday at 8:30 p.m. – where they wanted to spend the night – but state fair – so everything was full.  They kept stopping & finally found a place in Richmond, Indiana at 1:00 A.M.

We had the last carnival yesterday – which I more or less organized – took in $130.

I'm planning on packing up the Buick on Sunday or Monday – then go into the city Monday p.m. for a few days – will leave the car here.  I'm not sure if I'll be home for the weekend – but the 15th is fine for heading West.  Mom – I'm glad you are planning on going out & of course we'll have room.  I am taking the Buick – probably will sell it out there – then will fly back home.

Vince, Kelly & Carol left this morning.  Mr. Ream asked me tonight where Carol was – talk about bad communications!

Drove the seniors down to Flemington last week – made 2 trips w/ the Red van – one on Wednesday, other on Thursday.  Then on Friday after my last trip into the city we took the van back.  So now just have the V.W. w/ the crazy door that keeps falling off!

It was nice of you to have Jackie come – how long did she stay?  Did she have alot to say?  How is her appetite?  What's new with her?

Tomorrow is Tomahawk – with just the VW van.  There will be about 5 trips each way.

Mary Va – we went bowling tonight – Liz, Kids, Curtis & Scotty –  I didn't bowl – just kept score.

Charlie Wagner, Frank Tiffany & Mr. Hodge are in Marion & Ito's room.  It seems strange.

My new sandals – ordered a pair – custom made – are really comfortable.

We went to Burger King tonight – at the table next to us the girl cracked her tooth eating a hamburger.

Love, Berta

1977 Catherine's Letter -Aug.22

Monday morning
August 22, 1977
Dear Mom and Dad and Mary Virginia,

Thanks for your letter – it was a real epic.  It certainly sounds like you crammed alot of things into your trip and glad that you got to see Serena.  At least you are able to see her once in awhile even if she doesn't write much.

I took DeeDee and Robbie to Sea World on Friday.  We were able to go by bus – only one transfer and the connections were good.  We got there just before they opened (9A.M.) and stayed until 4:30 so we had a full day.  DeeDee has been there several times but it was all new to Robbie.  They had changed the whale show since I went in December but all the rest were the same – still very entertaining and well worth the admission price.  They also enjoyed Capt. Kid's World which is a special playground for children 4-14 (or under 105 pounds) – all sorts of slides and nets to climb on.  They also have a place where you swing from arm to arm (I don't know the term but they are in most playgrounds) only this one has a pool with a few inches of water in it underneath so if you don't make it to the other side you fall into the water.  Alot of kids were getting wet!

Today we are going to El Cajon and have a picnic lunch with Gerry.  Then DeeDee and Robbie are going to see "Herbie goes to Monte Carlo" at the movies while I scout around for diapers, etc.  Gerry has an interview with John Deere dealer at 5:15 so he is getting off early to change his clothes, etc. so he will drop us off at home before going there.  They called him about two weeks ago and he told them he was interested in changing jobs but because of his insurance benefits he couldn't really afford to do so until after the baby is born.  They called him back last week (evidently they didn't have any luck finding anyone else) and said they would still like to talk to him.  I don't know anything about the John Deere dealer but I know Gerry would rather work for them than IH if he was given the choice.  It will be interesting to see how his interview goes this evening.  [Gerry had worked for John Deere in Maine before we moved to California.]

Did I mention that while Gerry was on vacation they fired the Parts Manager at International?  The branch manager had previously discussed with Gerry the possibility of his taking over the job but they ended up hiring a man from outside the Company who has never worked with International before.  Both Gerry and Hal (another guy who works with Gerry) would have been quite capable of handling the job – plus that they know the system and what needs to be changed to make it function better.  They are both upset that they were passed over.  Hal figured he was second in line behind Gerry and if Gerry doesn't get a promotion when the opportunity arises where does that leave him.  The biggest thing seems to be that the Branch Manager likes to surround himself with "yes men" while both Gerry and Hal are the type that will speak their minds especially about things they think should be changed.  Neither of them are at all happy about the situation.

Robbie is to fly back to Boston on Thursday.  And then Gerry's folks will be arriving on Monday for a week.  We are planning to send them up to L.A. one day on a bus tour which goes to Universal Studios, Farmers Market and tours Hollywood.  They should enjoy that.  Plus we thought we'd take them to Tijuana and perhaps some other sights around San Diego.  They have never been to California before.

Mom, we are still counting on your coming in September and we expect to see all of you at Christmas time.  Let us know your plans!

Love,  Catherine & Gerry

1987 Catherine's Letter -Aug.19

Wednesday, August 19, 1987

Dear Mother & Dad and Mary Virginia & Serena,

Hi!  Thanks for the post cards.  I am using the computer at work to write this as you could probably guess.  This is the fanciest print, as least that I've discovered so far.  You can even make it all different sizes!  I've had a lot of fun figuring how how it works but there is still alot I wish I knew that I haven't figured out yet!  I do lots of flyers, forms, etc. for work, like stuff about programs and storytimes, bookmarks and things like that.

We had registration for our fall programs beginning last Saturday.  I came in and worked from 8 to about 12:30.  When we opened at 9:00 there were 50 parents already standing in line to register!  The more popular programs filled up right away, and all the programs were filled and have waiting lists by yesterday.  We have been referring people to the Velma Teague "Branch" since they are offering similar programs and still have openings but most people want to use the NEW library.

Wendy seems to have adjusted to life at home.  She has been reading lots of books and going with Senior Village on some of their outings.  She had a great summer – thanks for everything!  We have been school shopping also.  Yesterday morning (sine I worked 12-9) we went to the J.C. Penney outlet store in Tempe and also to the Sears outlet in Scottsdale with Roberta but didn't find enough to justify the trip across town.  We can say we've been there though!

Write again soon and tell us what's happening in New Vienna!

8-20
It was good talking to you last night.  Wendy says the calendar was on the wall over the desk and she thought the picture (in tube) was on or near the desk.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry

1967 Catherine's Letter - Aug. 28

August 28, 1967

Dear Mother, Daddy, Roberta, Serena, John & Mary,

Hi!  Glad to hear from you-all once again.  It seems like a long time since I was home just last week!

Marilyn Dill from Washington Court House has offered to take me as far as her house next Monday.  Her mother is coming up after her.  Please notice the enclosed map which will direct you to her house.  I hope you can fit it together all right.  It is shorter to turn on the ToweGing Road but Marilyn was afraid you might miss it so also included the longer route through Washington C.H. turning at the intersection where the 3C intersects with Rt. 62.  If this is all right with all of you I will call from Mt Sterling so we can arrive at the Dill house at approximately the same time.  The Patio closes at 2:00 P.M. but I am not sure how soon we can get out of Lakeside.

I have given up most thoughts of Expo '67 mainly because when I get home I am going to have to catch up on those required books for Kalamazoo, finish my math, plus do the millions of other things which will have to be done before I leave for the winter.

I have heard nothing from Kalamazoo.  Neither has Charley so we are both living in ignorance.

The tomatoes are really good!  The three real green ones are just now beginning to ripen up.  I have been eating one a day -- like vitamins.

I stole Roberta's idea of the envelopes [folded page of a colorful magazine] mainly because I ran out.  Hope you don't mind, Roberta!

Friday night I went out with a guy named Lennie who is in the Coast Guard stationed in Marblehead.  He is nice but I still like Jim better.  I got a letter from Jim Saturday he wasn't able to make it up this weekend.

It is really frigid up here!  Feels more like October or November than August.

See you all next week!

Love,
Catherine

1967 Catherine's Letter -Aug.23

August 23, 1967

Dear Mother, Daddy, Roberta, Serena, John, Mary,

Hi!  I hope you all make it to Dayton in time despite the flat tire and had a safe trip home.

I am now on the third day of my diet and according to the scales at the grocery store I have lost three pounds.  The tomatoes and plus are delicious.

When I went to work Tuesday morning, Hugh said he had wondered whether I would be back but he seemed pleased that I was.  They got another girl to work in the kitchen so I am now a full time waitress.  Last night I made $5.13 in tips which isn't too bad.

I also got my schedule for the rest of the summer which is every night until next Thursday, and then starting Friday I will work days including Labor Day.  The Patio is scheduled to close at 2:00 P.M. on Labor Day.  The umbrellas, tables and outside chairs have already been put away and we are cleaning up as much as possible every day.

I will have to let you all know later what my arrangements will be as far as coming home.

Jim and Doug had talked of coming up this weekend as Jenna will be back and I had thought I would be working days.  Since I am working nights it may complicate matters slightly.

When do the Beers get back?

I have to get ready to go to work now, so I better close.  Oh, I almost forgot, I saw Mr. Andrew in the Patio yesterday.  His niece is the mother of one of they guys I used to work with at the Hotel.

Love,
Catherine

Hi!  This card showed up (among Wendy's things?) so figured I might as well use it!  Wendy is all set for 4th grade, she will have a man teacher.  I'm taking a computer class at Glendale Comm. College.  We went out for a Chinese dinner last night with Roberta.  What days are you working this year, Mother?

1987 Roberta's Letter -Aug.16

8/16/87
Dear Family,

Hi!  Good to talk w/ you all today!  Know it will take a "few days" to get back into the routine!  Thinking back now – it took me over a week – and I was only gone 12 days!

I sure want to thank DAD for a very enjoyable week pedaling across IOWA – and then of course the support crew of Mary Virginia & Mom for the letters, communications along the way.  The VAN trip was great – enjoyed being a tourist with all of you!

It was a very enjoyable time – and Wendy & I both have very fond memories of that trip.  I enjoyed too all the great eating – and pleased that after I got back & into my regular routine the extra pounds I put on – came off!  Thanks for ALL!

Did the Hortons tell you I'm now in training for the Phoenix MARATHON!  It is 1/9/88!  It's 26.22 miles – at present I have 5 others also signed up.  Mother are you interested?  None of us will break any speed records – but I feel confident we can all finish.

I have now completed my 1st week of training – up to walking/running 20 minutes.  Only 21 more weeks of training!

Actually I'm now into CROSS TRAINING –  since I'm also signed up for Parker Dam Bike Race on 11/6 & the Tour de Tucson 100 plus ride on 11/20.  Sid & I will make long weekends out of both of those trips!  The dates are fine – with John being here in-between.

This last week I was asked to speak at the Tempe Community Council meeting about Senior Village.  They are in the planning stage of shared housing for elderly.  There is a Real Need in EAST VALLEY for it!  Actually it went so well – I was just asked alot of questions – as to day to day operations of Sr. Village, admissions, etc.  I've been asked if I would come back for a citizen advisory type meeting 1st part of September.  Too bad I can't charge for consulting – HA!

Worked out fine as the meeting was Thursday – in Tempe.  Joe went over with me & then he spent the time at the ASU campus – looked over the Frank Lloyd Wright building – then the Art Museum there.  The only problem was later when I met him at the Art Museum I had on my good shoes & got a blister on my toe!

We went in the student union on campus & went downtown – a HUGE McDONALDS!  For lunch we met my friend Gloria for lunch near county hospital.

That night we ate at Olive Garden w/ Morgans.  It is sure a popular place – we waited 45 minutes to get seated.  (But we walked to Metro & a few minutes after we got back our name was called!)

Wendy enjoyed going to Church w/me this AM.  She was quite impressed w/ the minister – She is signed up for Pioneer Girls this year at Trinity Bible Church.

Now Monday AM – What a shame – the plane accident out of Detroit coming to Phoenix.  Gloria's husband (not the people you all met) works for NW Airlines & he was on duty last night.  Must have been a very long and sad night for all.

Time for me to get moving along ––

Much love,
Roberta

1987 Joe's Letter to Roberta -Aug.16

Aug. 16, 1987
New York City
Dear Roberta,

Sorry about all the inconvenience I've caused you.  I thought about you this morning as you bicycled out to the airport to pick up the keys.  I hope all turned out all right for you.  Were there, in fact, 4 keys on the black rope?

Losing keys is such a hassle.  It just takes time to get yourself back together again.

I've done my grocery shopping and laundry and will start to paint tomorrow or at the latest Tues.

I want to thank you for all Sid & you did to get me relocated in New Mexico.  The blue chevy was a big help and of course, all your positive thinking!

I weighed myself yesterday at the gym.  151 lbs. so I'm not too upset over 2 weeks of heavy eating – My muscles ache today after not exercising for two weeks.  I think the rest was good for my aching back.

Saw this article in the NY Times on Gov. Mecham.  I hope he is ousted from his authority.

Good luck on running and encouraging Gloria to do same.

Will look forward to seeing you and John in Santa Fe in November.

3 cheers for the Southwest, yogurt and you!

Love,
Joe

1977 Catherine postcard -Aug.16

August 16, 1977
Hi!  It sure was good talking to you on Saturday – a pleasant surprise after our hectic time in Los Angeles.  We don't see why Mom can't come out in September and then all of you come in December as originally planned.  It's not like you have a grandchild born every day!  Right?  Couldn't you make a tentative reservation for sometime between say the 16th -21st.  I don't think it will be any sooner than that but perhaps the Dr. will be able to tell more as the time gets closer.  I went to the Dr.'s today and he said everything is fine – the baby is in the right position.  I had gained four pounds since I was last there two weeks ago – that makes 15 now all together.  I figured I might gain some having been away from home but I was surprised it was that much.  From now on I have to go to the Dr's every week.  I have sent in my application for reservations at the hospital – they have rooming in so the baby can stay in the same room with me. DeeDee and Robbie are both fine although a little bored today as it is raining and they haven't been able to spend their usual hours in the pool.  Write soon!

1977 Catherine's letter to John -Aug.14

Sunday morning
August 14, 1977
Dear John,

Hi!  Thanks for your letter (or card rather) from Hudson Guild Farm.  We found it waiting for us when we returned from Los Angeles.  Mom and Dad called yesterday afternoon plus we got a letter from Mary Virginia so we are fairly caught up on all the news except of course from Serena.

Mom said if she comes out in September then She and Dad & Mary Virginia might not come out later. like in December.  But I don't see why she can't come in September and then all of them come again in December.  We'd really like her to come in September.  I don't want to stay in the hospital any longer than absolutely necessary and if Mom were here then at least Gerry wouldn't have to worry so much about my coming home sooner.

Well, DeeDee and Robbie had a good time at Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland.  We also went to Universal Studios.  Gerry and I enjoyed that as neither of us had been there before.  We took a bus tour from our motel to Universal so we didn't have quite as much time at the end of the tour to see the stunt shows and other shows they have.  We did get to see a trained animal show which was pretty neat.  The bird that is on Baretta was in it plus a couple of dogs who were really cute.  We spent 14 plus hours at Disneyland - arriving at 8 a.m. and staying until about 10 p.m.  Some of the time Gerry and I just sat down and gave the tickets to DeeDee and Robbie and told them to meet us in 2 hours.  It wasn't so crowded early in the morning but by evening the place was really jammed with people.

This afternoon we are all going to a baseball game.  The Padres vs. Houston Astros.  The Padres have won five games in a row so we're hoping they will go for six today.  They are not too far behind San Francisco and Houston in the standings and it sure would be nice if they could get ahead of both of those teams and finish 3rd for the season.  That would be a first.

Say hello to Roberta and Mary Virginia for us.  I understand Mary Virginia will be returning to New Vienna this week.  I'm going to try to write to her before she leaves Hudson Guild.  Tell Roberta I have a picture to send her.

Write soon!

Love,
Catherine & Gerry

1967 Catherine's Postcard -Aug.12

[Not enough words visible in the first paragraph to make much sense, other than I had made a very short visit home (or met the family somewhere?), saw Marianne, and Paul Steele sent his regards.]

[postmarked Aug. 12, 1967]

Al and Bill did come up Tuesday.  I really had a good time.  We went boating, had supper at a pizza house, and then went to see "Divorce American Style" in PC.

Wednesday I went to Toledo.  Spent a bunch of time at the library and window shopping mostly.  After I paid $30 for the room for the rest of the summer (since July 22 until Sept. 3) I still had $5 left plus the Upjohn dividend.  I ate supper at Smith's cafeteria and had some really delicious vegetables.  I called the Zooks.  Pam is in the hospital having some surgery done on her ear or something.

Donna is going home Sunday and Jenna is leaving next week.  A lot of the kids are leaving early.  Got to get to bed now.

Love,
Catherine

Hi!  Well we left S.D. early yesterday morning and arrived at Knotts shortly before 9:00 when they open.  It wasn't crowded so early so the kids [Dee & her cousin Robbie] were able to get on the best rides (motorcycle races, log ride, parachute jump, etc.) before there was too much of a line.  We took a break in the afternoon and then went back to Knotts for chicken dinner and to use up the rest of the tickets.  They also had a pretty spectacular fireworks display.  Today we're off to Universal.

1967 Message to Catherine and Reply -Aug.5,7

8/5/67 [Message from HH to Catherine]

Dear Catherine:  We all enjoyed your last letter,  Mother had a letter yesterday from the Hortons, nothing particularly new but that Mares wants to make an appointment with Dr. Fullerton about a physical for College.  Your Mother took Serena to the foot doctor yesterday in Hillsboro, she is to get a particular pair of shoes, do exercises and go back in six months (sounds fair enough).  VW took us to Lions Club picnic at Rocky Fork, took KDC and Linda A. with us so had a carload.  Dr. Hull in Columbus has a small Coney Island type place near there where the picnic was held.  Real Nice.  Route 28 is about graded down for the base of the new road.  Roberta's group drove thru there for training.  They also are talking of going to Dayton for one lesson for city traffic.  Last Tues. evening they met for night driving.  One more week to go.  Going to Chicago and St. Paul myself this Mon. and Tues.  Have you gotten the book yet?

8/7/67 [Reply from Catherine]

Hi!  I have been quite busy lately.  Saturday I went home with Donna and we cooked breakfast & lunch with real food in a kitchen!  We just made it back in time to go to work at 3:00.  Yesterday I ate dinner at the Nobles.  They are still looking for a house.  Bill and Al are coming tomorrow.  I got the book on Friday I think.  Thanks a lot.  I am sending the latest paycheck but I'm keeping $16 which I made at the ad building last week.  A lot of kids are quitting and leaving.  Some because they have to go back to school early and others because they are just tired.  Jenna, Charley, and I (and another cheap-skate boy) bought 2 pizza mixes and then got cheese and bacon on our meal tickets.  We have had one but we are saving the other until later.  Really good!

Have to get this in the mail now.

Love,
Catherine
