1990 Roberta's Letter -Mar.3

3-3-90
Hi!

It's a good thing I save coupons -- just got 2 8x10's of Baby Beethoven done to send to Grandma.  I have explained to "BB" that Grandma is in FLA / then Ohio but will return in November.  He is understanding of that!

Hope you all had a good flight home -- I'm very anxious to hear how everything goes at 1025 N. 'B' Street!

It's a busy time here -- between paper work / new lady moving in.  We have another private pay to move in but not till April 1st.  Young -- in her 60's -- BRAIN FRIED!  Maybe we need to change our name from Sr. Village.  HA!

I'm also enclosing negative! [of group picture -- it's still attached to the letter]  Sid says should be cropped and then enlarged.  I sent 8x10 of group to Serena & G'ma.

Love, Roberta & Sid & BB

[on the right margin]  Do you all want 1 or 2 8x10 of Baby Beethoven?

1980 Roberta's Letter -Mar.2

Sunday afternoon
3/2/80
Dear Family,

It's a beautiful sunny afternoon . . . the kind of weather I'm in Arizona for!!!  But according to the weather man another storm is to come through here tomorrow.  All this past week we had really nice weather.  Got up to 75 or 80 during the day and cool and night.  Sure nice weather to ride the bikes in.  Marion is still using her bike every day for getting back and forth to school.  Scottsdale schools have started a bus system that will pick up teachers at the ASU stadium in the AM and then drive them back there in the afternoon.  But that was taking like two hours . . . and turned out to be worse on her back than riding the bike.

Marion keeps her bike right up front in her classroom.  She says that all the kids really like it.  Guess she has a couple of boys carry it down the steps for her and she leaves a minute before the bell rings to go home.  There is a ramp at the side of the building she uses in the AM to get it into the building.  She says that once the temporary bridges are built she will continue to use the bike.  Sure save the money on gas -- it will be almost two weeks since we filled up the truck -- and it still has some half of a tank full.  I use my bike everyday for work . . . we use the truck solely for running around at night.

[Love, Roberta]

1990 Mom & Dad's letter to John -Mar.1

Mar. 1, 1990 (Thurs.)
Dearest John --

It was good talking to you on the phone before we left.  Had a nice trip down & stopped to see Helen Kuntzman.  It so happened Ken and Lorraine Enright were speaking at a missions weekend program at her church so got to see them too.  They are to be at the Reynoldsburg U. Methodist Church soon & I'm sure you'd be interested in hearing him if you aren't already busy!  Sorry I didn't get the date there.  Perhaps Mark knows?

Also stopped to see Donald & Martha Ann Bernard Sat. morning & then picked up Roberta & G'ma at the airport in West Palm.

We've had a busy time ever since.  g'ma has had alot of pain in her back so went to see a doctor.  X-rays showed a number of things but surgery wasn't recommended for someone her age.  He gave her a shot and pain medicine for future discomfort.

We have been busy with other things too -- church services, Ash Wednesday supper and service plus Sunday School class meeting.  Mary & I went to see White Eagle -- the noted Indian singer who was excellent.

Thought you might be interested in seeing the clipping that was in the WNJ about the engagement plus some pictures Roberta brought of G'ma and Beethoven with Sid in the background of one.

Dad wants to add a note.  [now in Dad's handwriting]  We have been to the beach once (also library once).  G'ma enjoys the van wheel chair lift -- it works easily.  We are flying home on the 6th, back on the 16th & then will drive the van home to meet G'ma on the 24th.

The Enrights were the pastors of the NVUMC in the late 1930s & went from there into the mission field.  He is an excellent speaker & Mrs. "E" is very passionate.

The W.N. Journal is a week late in getting here.  G'ma looks forward to the mail.  The big issue in the paper is about the proposed new WILM City Bldg. -- about where to put it and how to finance it.

Love,
Mom & Dad

1990 John's Letter -Mar.1

March 1, 1990
Dear Mom, Dad, Grandma, Uncle Bill & Aunt Mary,

I am in Athens today to recruit at Ohio University for the bank.  I really enjoy interviewing these college students.  I came down this morning at 6:30 AM and will talk to 9 Seniors.  Janice, a young gal from Park will talk to 9 students as well.  On Monday, I am scheduled to recruit at Denison.

Cynthia Uible's phone number is . . . .  She seems very nice.  Her father is Robert Uible, a doctor.

I have been trying to figure out when I can come down to New Vienna for a visit.  It appears as though I have something scheduled every weekend in March & April.  I know I will see you May 12 and I hope even before then.

Sorry if this note seems disjointed as I'm trying to write in between interviews.

I have been completing applications for Campus Crusade and Grace Brethren Foreign Missions.  I received a call Monday night from the Director of a group called Frontiers [?].  He wants me to fly out to California in April for an interview.  They asked if I could come Friday April 13 and stay until Tuesday April 17th.  I don't want to miss Easter with you guys but I think I'll fly out.  Hope you understand.

Julie is coming to Newark the weekend of March 9-11.  I'm so anxious to see her.

Hope all of you are enjoying sunny Florida.

Love,
John

1980 Catherine's Letter -Feb.26

2-26-80

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  We got your postcard from New York on Sat. and the one you mailed from Ohio yesterday.  Thanks.

We made an offer on the house of $46,000.  Thanks for your advice, Dad.  I checked the deeds at the court house and we found out that the previous owner paid $43,500 in July of '78 but the bank transferred these people and paid them $49,833 in Sept. '79.  It therefore seems unlikely that they will accept our offer but we'll see.  They have 10 days to respond.  The interest rate now is 13½% and we figure we can't afford to pay more than 46.  We said we would still put 12,000 down and finance the other 34 for 25 years.  The other thing we wanted to discuss with you is that we probably wouldn't be able to start paying you back for about 3 years.  Would that be a problem?

We finished putting the first coat of stain on our new bookcase last night.  It looks real nice.  We didn't buy enough to put two coats on (we thought we did but it didn't turn out that way.  So we will buy another can of stain when we got back to Portland for Gerry's next Dr. appt. on March 13th.  He has to be checked out by the M.D. again for the satisfaction of the Workmen's Comp. people.  He also has an appt. with his Dr. in Bend next Tuesday morning.  He seems to be coming along excellently.  We played golf on Saturday for the first time this year and not only did it not hurt him but he did pretty well.  That made him feel good.

We have a busy week this week.  Tonight we are going over to the house of a guy who works at the Co-op.  They just moved here in December from California and they have a 3 month old daughter.  Tomorrow night is the monthly birthday dinner at the Elks followed by the new member indoctrination which we need to go to because Gerry is sponsoring a new member this month.  Thursday night Gerry and Bob (the new member) have to go to the initiation at the Elks and Emily (his wife) and I will probably do something.  These are real good friends of ours that we have gone hiking with and played golf with.  They only live a block away.

We are due to have our monthly inspection of the apartments again soon.  It has rained the past few days so I haven't been able to do much outside but hopefully it will clear up tomorrow.  We really haven't had any excessive rainfall like they have had in southern California and Phoenix.  We had our flood last year.

While I was at the Court House yesterday I picked up an application for a job in the County Clerk's office.  They require a typing test which I'm sure would be no problem as I get plenty of practice typing.  If we do buy a house I'd like to have a job as soon as possible so we could make the transfer from the apartments to the house.  We are required to give 30 day notice if we leave the apts. but I figure I could be working at another job during at least part of that 30 days.  We'll see how it all turns out.  The interest rates are the most discouraging aspect of the whole thing.

Love,
Catherine
Gerry &
Wendy

1970 Catherine's Postcard -Feb.27

2 AM
Feb. 27, 1970

Hi!  I guess I can say foreign study is official over as in three hours I have to get up and head for the train to Malaga.  I'm sorry I haven't written lately but things have been piling up.  I'm looking forward to getting to Malaga and getting lots of sleep and lots of warm sunny days!  Our trip to Stockholm - Copenhagen last week end was a good one and I've even become used to sleeping on trains.  We went somewhere every day this week, plus I got a history paper written.  It's a good thing we're leaving the country tomorrow I've only got about 3 marks left.

(It is now 9 AM and we're on the train somewhere).  I didn't exactly understand from your last letter whether you're picking me up in New York or not.  I hope I hear from you before then -- I will be back in Münster on March 14 and then on to London.  I don't want to leave but I already have.  I'm looking forward to K though.  Wow am I ever.  Please excuse this card buy my mind is functioning differently this morning.  My relationship with Mike has become past tense.  I was tired of feeling committed.  Right now I feel young and selfish and I want to find my own life.  I want to live for myself awhile with no ties holding me back.  I hope the stereo is in working order because that is one of the things I've missed the most.  Do either Roberta or Serena have headphones with theirs?  Happy Birthday, Mary!  I'm thinking about you today.  I got a letter from Roberta but I didn't have money or time to do the favor for her.  Also got a letter from cousin Joe yesterday.  I've got to get this mailed wile we're still in Germany.

Love,
Catherine

1980 Roberta's Letter -Feb.22

Had guessed that this letter was written 2/29/80 but then there was a reference to a 3-page typed letter received by Mom & Dad on 2/26/80.  So, changing the approximate date of this letter to 2/22/80.
Monday Morning
7:30 A.M.
[2/22/80]
Dear Family,

My goodness!!!   Where should I start??? Between the moving and the rains we've really had the action here.

We actually closed the deal on this house last Monday.  I had the day off -- for Lincoln's birthday.  Marion took the day off -- to get duplicate license -- and also for the signing of all the papers.  We had to drive down to Phoenix to pick up the papers at their office downtown.   Figured that was cheaper than having to miss another day of work -- and the idea of paying the $25 dollars a day rent.  (details on that later).

I thought we would do the final stuff at the mortgage company -- but turned out to be a Title company.  It sure was a plush office.  Sure had the signing to go through.  In fact the first pen they gave me wore out in the process . . . all that signing.  Kind of reminded me of before I went to India . . . except that time I was signing for travellers checks . . . .

The woman at the title company seemed very good at explaining stuff.  I -- we had to figure out whether or not we wanted "joint tenants" or "tenants in common".  We chose the one where you wouldn't have to go through probate.  I understand probate attorneys really make the money . . . maybe that's only in Arizona.  (ha, ha) Dad, I would like you to write me a list of things that you feel should go in this agreement between Marion and I. (me)  Then I can write you back and let you know what I want said about it.  Also the woman said that the fire insurance was necessary to have since the common walls -- if your house was burning -- so would your neighbor's.

Last Monday night the Stubbs and Mandezes (both have pick-ups) helped us move all of our boxes.  Also drawers and clothes hanging up.  Over the weekend -- last weekend -- we decided since we were in such a hurry to get out it would be worth it to hire someone.  I called up some of the big name places -- the ones with the big ads in the phone book.  One came out and gave me an estimate of $600 for furniture only -- no boxes.  I almost fell over.  Then I called up some that advertise in the Pennysaver -- the little free ad type book we get delivered to the door once a week.  Two came over and gave me an estimate -- one was for $26 dollars an hour and the second for $125.  I picked the first since he thought it could be done in two hours -- which is their minimum charge.  They did a great job.  That was on Tuesday.  They had an 18 -- or maybe it was 20 foot truck and did everything in one trip.  They were also suppose to charge 20 cents a mile -- but they didn't add it on.  That $52 was sure money well spent.  Marion should not be lifting anything -- and was I tired from all the action the night before.

Oh, about the rent we were supposed to pay.  I had Marion tell her real estate agent that she had checked with her attorney and he said that she should not have to pay the rent until we had a chance to get their money to the bank . . . to put toward this place. Also I left them a note saying the same. Also that there was usually such an agreement -- like a "gentlemen's agreement" -- not to charge for first so many days.  Those creeps gave the real estate man the check on Friday night -- then we weren't home that night -- so they didn't get the check to Marion till Saturday night.  Marion couldn't get it to the bank till Monday -- and they wanted to charge us rent starting on Friday.

Thank you very much for the Valentine's card and the enclosed check.  We haven't done it yet -- but plan to eat out at the new Black Angus soon.  The last two weeks we have eaten out someplace fast -- or have eaten at home something fast.  All three of the restaurants near the new mall are now open.  We did eat at the one called "Around the Corner" -- right on Alma School north of Southern.  It was really nice.  And kind of neat the way you order.  Each table has a small phone (do I have a story on the phone company) and you do your ordering on that.  Then they buzz when the order is done and you go and pick it up.  Fix your own waters -- get silverware -- etc.,  Basic menu is about 20 varieties of hamburgers -- from $1.60 to $2.95.  Mother -- somehow the zip code was really messed up on the card -- 82502 -- and we didn't get it till Friday.

Now to build up to the story on the phone company.  Thursday was the dedication day for the new senior center, East Mesa center was closed that day -- all of our group came into town to take part in the dedication . . . which they all enjoyed.  It was a horrible rainy day -- and since it was right uptown I had Marion drop me off there -- and then I would call her when I was ready to come home.

I was in charge of the actual serving and all for the meal.  We had over 500 reservations.  There were so many people!!!!  Had two sittings and everyone got served in less than 45 minutes.  Had 8 senior citizens and 13 teenagers from a program called "time out" -- instead of being sent to jail they were doing this type of thing for public service.  Guess they do lots of painting and stuff.  And they were such good workers.  Really worked fast between getting out the milks, desserts, salads.  The people had to go through a line to get their plate of food -- fried chicken, baked potato, and broccoli.  Also rolls and butters had to be put on each table.  Then as soon as people got up tables had to be cleaned and reset -- placemat, silverware, milk, rolls, etc....

Thank goodness the meal was catered . . . and the man that catered it sent over three of his men that helped us out during the whole meal.  They would not serve . . . but did keep the trays of chicken and baked potatoes fresh.  They were so heavy I could hardly lift them.  My restaurant experience really came in handy!!!  Alot of the other staff were giving tours of the buildings.  They were really hoarse . . . from having to do so much yelling -- to all the hard of hearing people.

I'm really glad to be out in East Mesa.  It's just that I wasn't hired to run that center and that is what I'm having to do.  But, I asked them for experience -- and I'm sure getting that!!!

OH!!!!  Back to the dedication day . . . .  About three o'clock I was told I could go home . . . so I called up Marion.  She wasn't -- or rather no-one answered the phone yet.  That didn't bother me because she might not have been home yet.  So I kept trying.  And kept trying . . . finally at 4:30 someone answered the phone.  I saidMarion -- no it was a Sue.  so I said is this 839-7039?  Yes, it was.  I said, oh, that was my phone number, and she said it was hers.  She had just gotten her phone the day before (same day we had).  So I called up the phone company and was told that 839-7039 was not my phone number -- and they would not give me my own number.  I asked to speak to a supervisor . . . and was I ever hot!!!  She also would not give me my own phone number -- because it was not under Uible -- turned out to be under Vible.  The phone will be listed under my name.  To make a long story short she would not give me my own number either but did call up Marion for me.  Friday I got back on the phone at work with the telephone company.  Got one of the head supervisors.  I kept saying that I should have an adjustment made on my bill since I was given the wrong number -- and people that I had given the number to could not reach me.  But, they don't see it that way . . . tho they would call anyone I wanted them to and give them the correct number.  They were suppose to call you all up -- believe tomorrow -- no on Wednesday to give correct number.  Did they???  The phone number is 839-5794.  It was a circle of mistakes -- as someone else was given our phone number.  To make a long story short I knew the girl that was really given the 839-7039 number.  She has taught at Mesa Central.  I called her back and gave her this number in case anyone should call here -- that I gave the first number to.  What a mix-up!!!

We are going to try to get by with just the one phone -- it was put in Marion's bedroom.  Did get the call forwarding option -- it's an extra $1.65 a month.  But allows you to program your phone into ringing into someone's phone.  I like the idea of it.  You can add some $25 dollars worth of options (per month that much)  Like the deal where you just push a number and it rings into someone's home, whatever.  Or where you can tell if someone is trying to call you while you are talking to someone else.  Even where you can put someone on hold to answer another call.  All these systems can be done on a regular phone -- as long as its push-button.

Did you all eve meet Jay Asher?  He's a retired friend of the Stubbs -- his wife's name is Florence?  He has been busy in the garage building us shelves.  We are going to have them along the whole side on the North side of the garage.  Sure would have been nice to have had them finished before we move in . . . but they are almost done now, about half of them will have doors -- the first 8 feet closest to the kitchen.  The next 8 feet are just shelves -- four up -- as is the first 8 feet.  Also having an 8 foot shelf put up over above the washer and dryer.  I'd also like another shelf put in my closet.  We have more room in the house itself -- but miss the storage areas -- the pantry inside the house and the storage area outside the townhouse.  The shelves will make up the difference tho when they get all done.

Suppose you all have heard all the news of the flooding here.  It sure will make it next to impossible for all those who have to cross the river to get to work . . . like Marion.  The whole East side of the valley only has one bridge to use -- the old bridge in Tempe -- Mill Avenue.  For the whole valley there are only three bridges open -- the other being Central which is right downtown and then one on the West side of Phoenix.  Lots of roads in Mesa have been washed away -- alot of people had to evacuate -- leave their homes.  If the dam had broken -- which they thought it might -- we would have had to have done it.  The police came by and warned us -- that would have been the last straw.  We are suppose to get more rains this week -- but hopefully the danger of it all is over.

We have had quite a mess here -- the back yard and front yard are just one big mud pile.  And the cement poured outside the house -- in the back -- was poured with the slant toward the house.  Thus one big pool of water right next to the house.  I've kept it swept into the yard.  The builder says he will fix it.  Guess it's all going to have to be torn out and redone.  Otherwise Marion says a thin layer will just crack.

Yesterday I went to do the first load of clothes here -- to find out that the hook-up had not been done right.  The plumber was just here to fix it.  Also had him fix the water deals in the bathrooms.  Both were off -- when you push toward cold water you got hot, and vice versa.  Seemed to be but a minor adjustment.

The move has really been hard on Buffy.  He couldn't figure it all out over there with all the boxes -- over here he keeps his nose to the ground trying to get all the new smells.  Once the back yard gets laid -- oh, we have the grass ready to go down sitting outside -- the garage, Now -- I keep telling Marion -- it's turning one of her favorite colors -- yellow.  We did get a manual sprinkling system put in -- underground.  The grass will have to be carried through the house -- have to get a plastic runner of some kind -- so as to not ruin the carpet.  I'm going to enclose a sample of the carpet -- it's really beautiful.

OH -- as to the 2,500 -- First off I put 1,000 of it into a savings at Valley National Bank.  Before I did that I had been looking at furniture -- Marion had been kind of wanting to sell the corner group in my room.  I had never really liked it.  Bed too short -- and very narrow.  So we advertised it and sold it for just under what she paid for it some two years ago.  So  now I've got a queen size hide-a-bed -- so pretty.  Orange and brown print.  Has interspring [sic] mattress -- really comfortable.  Also bought a two-piece outfit similar to what Marion had behind the dining room table in the townhouse.  A set of drawers with a bookcase over and then a deal that open up longways with a bookcase on top of it.  Also have a desk on order that won't be here till the end of March.  All the pieces were on sale.  Everything was delivered on Saturday.  I'm sure happy over the idea of having the desk plus the added storage space.

Wish you all could come out now and see the place -- sure looks different than it did at Christmas time.  When the camera gets unpacked will try to get some pictures taken.  You all are planning on coming out this way this summer -- right???

Oh, the Sankers didn't call on Saturday.  I spent most of the day here -- hoping that they would.  I fear perhaps that they had trouble somewhere on their trip with the floods.  It might have been tho that they tried to call on Saturday and couldn't get through.  The telephone lines were really tired [sic] up.  I did call Lowell's friend up on Saturday morning and gave him my telephone number.

So how was New York City??? And Mary Virginia what did you think of Westtown??  Gee -- you have a birthday coming up -- now will you be 15 or 16-years-old???  How soon do you get your license???  Before next Christmas???

I keep meaning to tell you all everytime I talk to you on the phone about how glad I was to get the article about TOYS and Dad.  It was sure a good article.  I'll enclose some articles in this letter about the new center and also the flooding.  Oh, the roads for me going out to work will not be too bad . . . few little detours.  But, on Friday we had three cars stuck . . . as the center's parking lot is just mud . . . as also the lane that the center is on off University.  I had no trouble with the bike . . . but sure did take it very easy.  Getting alot of good use of the rain suit.  I forget what the wet suit looked like for the canoe trip.  This suit is a pair of plastic pants . . . that tie at the waist.  And a plastic jacket and hood that snap.  I did buy a helmet which is great as far as keeping me warm (ears) and also dry.

Three pages . . . how are your eyes . . . hope to write more frequently . . . .

Thanks -----
Love, Berta

Tuesday
February 26, 1980
Dearest Family --

This is the first day of the 1979-80 school year that there is no school due to the snow and icy road conditions.  Needless to say, Mary Virginia was happy about this as well as the rest of the students.  I'm sure.  I had planned to go to school myself to make up for the last two Mondays (one for Patriots Day and the other yesterday when there were parent-teacher conferences, and thus no school).  Mary Kay Howard and I did go to Columbus and bought books for our respective libraries at two different places.

We did enjoy our trip to New York and so glad to have John and Carol with us.  The time went really fast and seems like a dream now.  The Royalton is in the process of remodeling the hotel as it has been purchased and anxious to see the final outcome.  There are big rolls of carpet all over the small lobby and new draperies and bedspreads help alot to brighten up the rooms but the bathrooms have not been modernized at all yet and they said the small lobby will be the last thing to be modernized.

We did see The Elephant Man but were unable to get tickets to any musical this time.  I did alot of looking and some buying in the bookshops especially Barnes and Noble.  Had a couple of real good meals both at new places -- Once upon a Stove which someone had recommended as their favorite place and another one that John and Carol picked out which had a good write up which we would never found on our own for its something like 58th & 10th or 11th.  Also went to Valles near Philadelphia on our way home which is a good deal.  It was a beautiful day when we were looking at Westtown but Mary Virginia wasn't too impressed especially after seeing the small dorm rooms.  Seems like she has her heart set on going to East Clinton for the rest of her highschooling.  The same fellow that had interviewed John suggested that she try Interlochen for he said she really didn't have too many credits in math or science to get in Westtown as a junior.  We hadn't realized that they even had a school there - thought it was just for summer music which is how it started out.  Mary Virginia wrote for the catalog for there and UC's summer program as well but sure doesn't show much interest now.

Learned when we got home that young Jim Mongold had committed suicide over a breakup in his marriage.  That's the second boy that Dad went to Philmont with that is no longer living and another is in trouble with the law.

We did enjoy getting your letters and talking to you on the phone.  Sorry that Teresa Clear and Debbie Stewart weren't able to come to Chicago this past weekend as planned but know that they were disappointed and will try again.  Hope things work out for you, Serena, to get the reference librarian's job.  Your call was a surprise as well as one from Catherine and Gerry about possibility of buying a house - anxious to hear how that works out.

That was really a long letter from you, Roberta - three full pages singled spaced.  So many people have asked if either of you were in the flooded areas.  Virginia did share with us the birthday card you and Buffy sent which we got a kick out of -- amazing how much time Marion saves (and gas) using her Honda.  Can she park it where its safe during the school day?  The phone company did call and give us your new number - I thought perhaps you wanted us to call you til we got your letter about your predicament.

Want you to know that we have the honey jar which you had to sent to us hung in the living room along with the bellows which Dad has enjoyed using and we are enjoying Moody Magazine too and the radio with the tv channels on it.  Thanks to all of you!

Mary Virginia has made an appointment for this Thursday afternoon for the driver's test, etc. and her first lesson.  She is also starting voice lessons tomorrow or rather Thursday night so it is going to be a busy Spring plus we three are starting a conversational Spanish class tomorrow night at Laurel Oaks.  Next week is our square dance graduation, hopefully we will pass, but anyway we have had fun in going.

1980 Catherine's Letter -Feb.20

February 20, 1980
Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  How was the New York trip?  I read an article in the paper yesterday about the toy show -- I didn't see any mention of Wells Mfg. though.

The big news here is that the microwave arrived.  It is a super deluxe model with a memory that can store up to ten programs, it has a timer that can be set to start cooking at a certain time, a temperature probe so you could cook something to a given temperature.  It also has different cooking levels like defrost, roast, hold (which is used with the temperature probe) and full power which is regular I guess.  It has a big carousel on the bottom that rotates whenever the power is on.  It arrived Monday afternoon and we have used it for about every meal since then.  It came with a cookbook that has lots of good sounding recipes in it so we'll have to try some.

Oma & Millard (the older couple who live across the street that we met at church) came over for supper last night.  We had quiche which they had never tried before.  There is a recipe for it in the microwave cookbook but I cooked it in the more traditional manner since I hated to experiment on company.  We also had split pea soup which I cooked in the slow cooker and then heated up in the microwave, fruit salad and frozen yogurt which they had also never tried before.

I did really good on my bowling last week.  My average was 92 and I got a 108, 136, and 140 so I was pleased.  I'm in hopes that means that I have finally gotten used to Marion's ball.  We'll see how I do today.

The blood drive last week was fairly successful.  I was the calling committee and contacted almost 200 people.  They were hoping to get about 75 pints and when we left about ½ hour before closing they had 70 so they came close anyway.  I gave my 33rd pint.

We went hiking after church last Sunday.  It was very muddy so we drove down to The Cove State Park with our friends Bob & Emily and then hiked along the road for several miles including up one big hill which really wore us out.  At least it was downhill on the way back to the car.  We left Wendy at a babysitters as she is not ready for a hike of several miles duration.  I am still trying to take her out everyday for a walk of a mile or so.

I went to hear Congressman Ullman speak last week at the high school.  There was a crowd of about 75 people with the majority probably being anti-Ullman.  He talked about the new tax he is proposing -- the value added tax which sounds to me like a national sales tax.

Just got back from bowling.  Today I got 96, 85, & 104 so I'm back to normal but my good scores last week did raise my average 2 points to 94.

We went to the Sweetheart Dinner at the church on Valentine's Day.  Did I ever tell you about the Silent Prayer Partner program that they have here?  All year long you are supposed to do things for your partner without them figuring out who you are.  Anyway at the Sweetheart Dinner I got a combination birthday-Valentine present, a book called "Handy Helpful Household Hints" published by Bible Voice Publishers.  Did you ever hear of them?  It's a real nice book, besides the hints it has quotes for instance "Like prayer, the small car bring the family closer together."

They are starting or attempting to start a AAUW here.  That is American Association of University Women.  The organizing meeting is to be this Saturday.  I do't know yet what our plans for this weekend are but I will probably go if we aren't doing anything.

Well, I better get this out in the mail box before the mailman comes.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

1970 Catherine's Letter -Feb.18

Wed. February 18, 1970
Dear Mother, Dad, Serena, John and Mary,

Hi!  I was hoping to hear from you all before I wrote again but it is another departure eve and nothing has arrived.  I just checked my records and found that I haven't written since I got a letter from you all last Thursday.  Things have been constantly building up to a climax here.

Paris was fantastic.  David, Bruce and JoAnn all met us here in Münster last Thursday.  (Us refers to Dick and I).  We arrived in Paris bright and early Friday morning.  We managed to crowd lots into the weekend including 3 art museums, (I avoided the Louvre, it sounded too big), the Eiffel Towel, Montmartre (sp?), lots of walking around, and Willy Boy, an American movie about Indians in 1909.  Thanks to their French we were able to find very cheap accommodations only 8 franks ($1.60) and worth about the same amount!  Ha.  But it was a place to lay our heads and that was all we needed.  The three French took off Sunday noon but Dick and I stayed to see an experimental jazz concert on Sunday evening which was well worth it.  And we were able to get the night train back and arrive only about 5 minutes late for school on Monday morning.

The week has gone somewhere and since there is no school Friday, Ann, Alan, Dick and I are taking off right after school tomorrow for Köln.  Then tomorrow night on the train, Friday in Copenhagen, another train overnighter with Saturday in Stockholm.  Back to Copenhagen or somewhere in that vicinity for Sunday as long as we can catch the Sunday night train back to Münster in time to get back to school on Monday.  So we have an entire weekend without having to put out any money for food or lodging.  It is hard to cut out some basic expenses like getting something hot to drink when we get tired of looking at museums or wandering the streets of a cold town.

Thanks for the pen.  Now I can even write notes in class without fearing I will run out of ink.  I don't know when summer vacations are going to be.  Hasn't K. sent you some sort of calendar?  I'm not really up for Mexico yet as I haven't learned Spanish.  But if you all are going somewhere at a convenient time I would definitely give the matter further consideration.

I'll admit our time in Moscow was rather pre-planned.  But since we had no knowledge of the language or what Moscow has to offer we preferred it that way.  We did have the advantage of being a small group in the off season and our guide was quite accommodating in changing our itinerary a couple of times after she found out what our interests were.  I think we were given ample time to wander around on our own plus we had evenings free.  By U.S. standards things aren't too expensive because the average Russian only makes about 130 rubles a month.  I'll explain about our fortunate money situation later.

I appreciated the letter from John, too.  Congrats on the DAR contest.

I got a letter from Ardy Munro recently.  Do you remember meeting her before we took off in her VW for San Francisco?  She wants to know how soon I can scrape up $700 to go to South Africa with her.

Next week is filled already with trips planned to Bremen, Dusseldorf (maybe two days) and possibly Hannover.  And on Saturday we head South hopefully to where there is warmth and sun.  All we've had here is snow and occasionally rain with lots of slush and generally unpleasant weather conditions.

There's a possibility you will be hearing from me again!

Love,
Catherine

1990 MV's Letter -Feb.

2 -   - 90
Dear Mom & Dad --

Thanks for the letter this week and paid insurance for the car (very nice Valentine) Thank you!

We had our engagement portrait taken this week (part of wedding photographer's package).  I think they will turnout well.  The enclosed pictures are from Sears.  I've sent some to Fla for Grandma & Hortons.

While you're down there, it would be very helpful if you all could discuss/decide how any guest rooms you'd like to have on what nights so I can reserve those.

Interviewed with the pastor at Christ UMC in Lexington on Wednesday.  They won't actually be hiring until probably August/Sept.  The other church that will be hiring won't be doing so until 1/91, so we're going to see how the interview goes with DS Hickman this week and see what our best options are.

Well the LD on the Spring Walk called this week & wanted to know if I would be ALD instead of Asst Music Director.  I was very surprised but agreed; I will be doing the 4th day talk (last one).  The Walk is May 3-6.  It looks now as if Don's Mother will be coming to visit in March sometime.  We'll see when she makes reservations . . . .

What are your Thursday plans?  Enclosed is a map to the tuxedo place, in case you leave late.  Always good to hear from you.

Love,
Mary Va.

1980 Catherine's Letter -Feb.11

February 11, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  We were glad to receive you letter on Saturday, and to talk to you on Friday, Mother.  We had a nice long weekend since Gerry had Saturday off.  We took Wendy to the babysitter on Saturday morning and we went hiking out in the country near Grizzly Butte which is about 20 miles southeast of Madras.  It was very muddy but not an unpleasant hike with the temperature around 35º.

Yesterday we went to Sisters and to Bend.  We had lunch at our favorite pizza place in the area which is in Sisters and then looked around at the stores there.  We bought Wendy a little Mexican chair that she took a fancy to.  It is not what you would call high quality furniture but the price was only $4.95.  Then in Bend we had to buy Wendy a new pair of shoes as her old ones had worn all the way through the toe (we  bought them the last of October).  Kinney's is about the only children's shoe store in Bend and they only had one pair in her size (7) so we didn't have alot of selection.  We also went to the Western Trails Factory Outlet store -- their primary thing is down jackets but they also carry pants, shirts, boots and other odds and ends.  Gerry and I each bought a pair of hiking boots at $27.00 each.  They are real nice -- I have been wearing mine this morning to help break them in and they are quite comfortable.  I spent your birthday money on mine which still leaves me some to buy the books with -- all the book stores were closed yesterday so I wasn't even able to look around.

Wendy is playing at her friend's house this morning.  We have a new arrangement where he comes here one Monday morning and she goes to his house on the next Monday.  At any rate it is now time for me to go pick her up so I'll continue this letter after we get back.

We have several things planned for this week.  Tomorrow night at 5:00 at the High School, our congressman, Al Ullman is having a public meeting which I am planning to attend and Gerry has to go to the Elks Investigating Committee as he is sponsoring a new member this month.  Wednesday is the Red Cross Blood Drive and Thursday I have a dentist appointment.  also Thursday night the church is having a Sweetheart Dinner, sponsored by the UMW, followed by games and singing so that ought to be fun.  Each couple is supposed to bring a single person with them so that no one will be left out.  We invited one of the older ladies but she isn't sure yet whether she'll be able to come.

We hope you have a good time in New York.  We'll be anxious to hear the details.  We watched Saturday Night Fever on HBO last night which takes place in Brooklyn and we were thinking how much different it would be to live there as opposed to Madras.

We got notice last week that the etage that we ordered has now come in and they will be shipping it to us soon so we are awaiting its arrival.  There is nothing new on the housing scene that appeals t us but we are still keeping our eyes open.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1990 MV's Valentine's card

For
Mom and Dad
on Valentine's Day

Today may you know blessings,
for you have blest me in so many ways.
May you know joy,
for you bring so much happiness to others.
May you know love,
for it is something you are always giving away.

It was good to see you briefly Sunday night and Monday a.m.  Sorry I'll miss you next weekend at the Men's Walk.  If you think of it, you might write Don a note in case he does get in at the last minute.

Meeting went fine -- there was a small detour on Rt. 62; had to take Rt 38 to I-71 then 56 to Mt. Sterling.  Was back in Lexington about 2:30.

Don's Mom & sister may be up to visit this weekend - it should be interesting to finally meet the in-laws!

Happy Valentine's Day. . . .  Thanks again for the $ for wedding.  I (we) really appreciate it!

P.S. Borrowed 2 mining bowls

Happy Valentine's Day
With Love,
Mary Virginia

1970 Catherine's Letter -Feb.7

February 7, 1970
8:45 PM
Dear Mother, Daddy, Serena, John and Mary,

This letter is like the song where the little boy tells all the terrible things about camp because he is homesick and then at then end changes his mind and says to disregard the letter.  Only I'm going to tell you at the beginning to disregard the letter because I have to be 100% better long before you even get this.

About all I've done this whole day is sleep and read the latest novel I got out of the library.  My span of concentration is only about 15 minutes so I haven't gotten much read.  It does go a little slower too because of my latest idea to improve my German.  I translate the first paragraph of every chapter into English (which isn't especially difficult) and then after a couple of hours I translate my english back into German and compare it with the original.  That is much more difficult but should improve with practice.  The other day in the library I found two German books with different titles both translated from the same English book.  Anything translated from one language to another should more accurately be called an interpretation.  It would be interesting to read the New Testament in all its 1280+ (that is a 1967 figure) languages.  Besides that how many versions are there in English alone?

You don't have to send me flowers, I'm not dying.  I'd tell you what I have but only God, the Dr. and Mütti know for sure.  It's probably some sort of the Grippe.  Mainly it is my head, which feels like it is disconnected; my stomach, which wishes it was disconnected, and my legs which get terrible cramps when I sleep.  I'm only allowed to eat certain exciting foods like oatmeal, yogurt, toast, to name a few.  It's awful when even that stuff tastes bad.  Mütti tries really hard so I do my best to force it down.  What is most disgusting is that I tried all week to get lots of sleep & eat all my proper nutrients so I could go to Amsterdam this weekend.  We don't have any school on Monday because of it being Rose Monday.  The Dr. and Mütti agree that by then I may even be well enough to go downstairs and watch TV.  I feel like I'm about five years old with everybody telling me what to eat and what to do.  I can't really argue though because nothing is going to stop me from going to Paris next weekend to meet David.  I got another letter from him today and he wants me to travel with him in March which sounds really exciting as he is going all sorts of exciting places like the Prague and Budapest.  The only hangup is that I've already made plans with Ann and I decided that was best.  Now I'm giving it second thoughts and at least I can talk it over with him next weekend.  I'll probably end up still going with Ann.

I also got a letter from Dave Roeltgen today (after a whole week of only two letters -- one from you and one Mike -- it was quite cheering to get four letters today, and none were from you or Mike.  It got my mind off feeling sorry for myself for a little while and that is about 75% of the problem).  The lovebug has really hit him -- he has been going with the same girl for going on five months now.  If he can work it into his plans we may be able to get together when I pass through New York on March 21.  I don't think I've seen him since two years ago when I was in NY for the Urban Affairs Conference.

I'd also like to go to Florida to visit my friends there.  Pete Cheney is working in Winter Park and I haven't heard from Marianne since (????).  That will be another vacation though as now I'm just looking forward to coming home.

Wednesday was our tour through the brewery.  It wasn't too exciting as it was in German which I didn't have a chance to not understand because I couldn't hear.  Afterwards we got sandwiches cigarettes and all the beer we could drink.  After about two hours some of the group had gotten down around 16 beers and even I had drunk enough to get slightly high -- a state I don't often reach because I don't like to drink that much.  Getting stoned sounds much more appealing to me although I haven't yet had the courage to try it.

Afterwards I went to see "Battle of Britain" at the British Theater.  War movies are just as monotonous as I remembered.  It was rather strange to be in Germany watching England defeat the Germans though.  The next night I went to see "Around the Mulberry Bush" in the English Dept. at the University.  I would classify it as more entertaining although I have now had my fill of movies for another three months.

Mike is busy getting ready to go on choir tour to California in March and filling out CO [conscientious objector as this was the height of the draft for the Vietnam War] forms.  He has supplies for summer work with Upjohn (don't ask me as what) and also with Civil Service in Chicago.  He may be able to come to Kalamazoo in April during the last part of his vacation but it is rather doubtful he will have time so I'm not going to count on it.

Just writing to you has made me feel better.  And pretty soon I'll be tired enough to go to sleep.  It's nice to go to sleep but I always hate getting up again because it is usually meal time and that is repulsive.

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours cutting out stuff from magazines to make a valentine for Mike.  Ann and I also bought some red paper to make Valentines for everyone in the class.  On Friday we're going to have an old fashioned Valentines Party in class like I remember from old New Vienna School Days.  What I should have is one of those make-your-own Valentine kits like Grandma used to send us.  Foreign study may be a period of regressing but it's fun.

I'm fed up to about three feet above my ears with history.  I haven't studied hardly any since I got home from Moscow.  The only thing I find enthusing is that there are only three weeks of the class left.  I've done a little research on my paper which I'm doing on how some of the cities in Germany were affected by the bombing during the last war.  The most interesting part is looking at the before and after pictures but that doesn't get much of a paper written.

Gee, do I miss my typewriter.  The typewriter also has the added advantage of conserving good BIC pen ink.  Goodnight.

Love,
Catherine

1990? Roberta's Letter -Jan.?

[This letter from Roberta is missing the first page which makes it difficult to determine the date.  A previous letter, dated January 16, 1990, indicates that Grandma was visiting her then, so most likely this letter was written during a week or two of that date.]

. . . he's having a great time with it!  Baby Beethoven often tries to help him play -- he always likes to be involved.

We had a prospective resident out today -- she has 4 cats, 2 dogs, & 2 birds & wants to bring all.  I said perhaps the birds or 1 cat.  I'm going to insist upon a pre-placement visit on the cat!

We need to get out the EOM Reports - did get out the Activity Calendar today.  Also got all the residents S.S. checks cashed today so they could get their spending $ ($58) - get their rent paid.

We sure enjoyed Oscar Taylors -- rich cousin to Lunt Ave. Restaurant.  Thanks for those gift certificates -- made the meal much more enjoyable!  Food was good -- very uptown.

We have had to move 2 people out.  One w/ complications of Flu -- but after being on medicine was still very confused.  This AM was trying to get people out of her closet -- people w/ BIG STRAW HATS on -- the mind was going.

Nothing wrong w/ Grandma's mind -- or her memory & since I've been changing her hearing aide batteries more often hearing is much much better!

Tonight I was telling Frankie Moore on the phone that it's ideal to have G'ma here & I had been telling her that for years.  G'ma overheard me & said next year she could come before Christmas & stay till I could go w/ her to FLAl -- like this year.  She says she wants to go to FLA -- since she has always done it . . . .

Maybe by next year we will have another cat --

It's getting late -- good to talk to you this PM Mom --

G'ma has our phone bill at heart!

Much Love,
Roberta

1980 Family Letter -Feb.5

Tuesday -
Feb. 5, 1980

Dearest Family -

The weeks pass by so quickly - seems like we just mailed a letter to you and we're overdue again.  Afraid the groundhog saw his shadow last Saturday so we are in for six more weeks of winter - but hasn't been all that bad yet.  There is snow on the ground and we've had cold weather but not near as bad as the winter before.  (So I hear.)  Had a full week with square dancing on three nights - one was our regular lesson and two dances where they encouraged us to use some of our hard-earned knowledge from the practice sessions.  All were fun but they sure do dress up with the extra full slips, matching outfits for husband and wife, etc.  We were definitely in the minority without all the frills but had a good time anyway.

Sunday morning we left here about 8 A.M. as the Sankers had invited us down for the day.  MV stayed home as her MYF were going to the nursing home in Sabina that afternoon.  We attended the 9:30 A.M. service at the Hyde Park Methodist Church, which is one of the larger churches in the West Ohio Conference with close to 3,000 members.  They had had this same minister for a good 20 years and he is still good (naturally).  There was time for refreshments at 10:30, then a class meeting and then the Prime Singles (those over 45, etc.) had a program at 12:30 on investments and they had a big turnout for that, so it was after two before we got back to the Sankers.  The Sankers are going out to Phoenix next week to see their son and hopefully Roberta also.  The Howard Uibles also live in this Hyde Park area.

Friday we had a little party for Fred Hughes, who is going to take time off at least until it warms up and he then is going to work on making the old mill building more usable.  Howard Wolfrum has taken over, who I think has a lot of potential as he has both ability and interest.  Fred had been there for 22 years and can't recall his taking off for more than a week in all those years.  He did tell me they plan to go to Florida eventually.

Mary Virginia started the classwork for her driver's license this week - two hours a night for four nights and then after her birthday comes the driving part.  I understand that the parallel parking is no longer required.  The East Clinton Band is having different projects to raise money for the Washington D.C. trip - such as a rockathon, auction and a 1% of sales at different business places.  The trip is at the end of March.

Saturday morning I went to the Republican meeting, or rather a brunch with the candidates and the Committee present . . . about 40 of us there, including our congressional aspirant, Bob McEwen and two incumbent state Senators.  We will be in NYC when they are having the Lincoln Day Dinner, but then the pancake supper the following weekend is more our speed.

It is now Wednesday - and I (Mama) had planned to go to Columbus with Mrs. Howard the librarian in Sabina today but a number of complications have come up and we aren't going until later.  We have had more snow and East Clinton is the only school again to be operating on regular schedule - the other county systems are on one hour delay and Wilmington is out for the day.  It is beautiful, the snow that is!!

Serena, I found another part of your sweeper which we somehow missed when we took the rest over to you - sorry about that.  If you can't use the rest without it we will send it to you - just let us know.  Also thought you might be interested that we got tickets for THE ELEPHANT MAN but for some reason I was under the impression it was a musical which it certainly isn't and wonder how appealing it may be after reading more about it.  Also got tickets to Oklahoma - Mary Virginia wanted to see ANNIE again but since she had seen it in Columbus decided against it.  There is a special matinee that Monday we are in NYC as it is a holiday.

(Dad is going to have the check this typewriter as it seems to be on stencil and no matter what I move I can't change the lightness.)

Va. Walker was to go back to school today for a half day - also is her birthday.  She is on insulin now and doing better.  Jacalyn finally got a job (teaching) and is most happy about that.

Sorry this is hard to read.

[Love, etc.]

1980 Catherine's Letter -Feb.4

Monday, February 4, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  We are having a beautiful day today with the temperature around 60º and lots of sunshine.  Yesterday was similar with the high around 55.  Maybe spring is here - the ground hog didn't see his shadow anyway.

We had a short weekend since Gerry had to work on Saturday and I had a UMW executive meeting on Saturday morning.  Yesterday I was worship leader at church and Perry got the flu and wasn't able to be there so I had to do even more than usual.  Someone else gave the sermon and I did all the other stuff.

Yesterday afternoon we went to Smith Rocks which is about 4 miles east of Terrebonne and went hiking.  It is really beautiful there.  We hiked along the river (Crooked River - the same one that has such a big gorge that the highway crosses between Madras and Redmond) and the cliffs rise just a few feet away.  One section of cliff is called the Red Wall as all the rocks are a real deep red color.  It's a place we'll have to be sure and go to when you are here next.  Wendy hiked along pretty well.  We didn't have to carry her as much as I thought we might.  Nearby is a country store called Juniper Junction which is a combination Book Store and ice cream parlor.  We bought a book called "60 Hiking Trails in Central Oregon Cascades".  Hopefully we will have a chance to check a few of them out this summer.  That is one reason we would like to be out of these apartments by summer time so we could have more time to ourselves.

This evening I'm going out to collect money for the March of Dimes.  Patty, the dentist's wife who lives just down the street is going with me and we have the neighborhood adjoined this one so we won't have to go too far away from home.

Right now I am fixing some of Mother's famous vegetable soup for our supper.  I just put the meat and bones on to boil about ½ hour ago.

Wendy is talking more every day.  She says quite a few words that neither Gerry or I can figure out.  She keeps right on saying them so maybe we'll catch on sooner or later.  One of the sentences she came out with lat week when she went into a dark room was "It's dark on me."  She usually manages to make here feelings known one way or the other.

I need to get back out to the parking lot and do some more sweeping so I better close.  One of our tenants just told me that the Almanac says we are supposed to get two bad storms in February so I better work while the weather is good.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1970 Catherine's Letter -Feb.3

February 3, 1970
11 PM Tuesday
Dear Mother, Dad, Serena, John & Mary,

Hi!  I'm sure you understand that the reason I haven't written lately is because I never go anywhere or do anything so there is nothing new to write.  (The previous sentence applies only the the last five minutes since I sat down to write this letter.)

To go back in time a ways, I had a good time visiting Sue and her husband Steve, in Erlangen.  He is from Portland, Oregon where they will be moving when he gets out of the army in July.  Sue and Steve are very much in love and everyone seems happy about the marriage except Sue's parents who refuse to accept Steve and haven't told any of the other relatives that she is married.  Hopefully time will improve the situation.  Steve has been in the Erlangen area for two years so I met alot of their German friends as well as army friends.  Meeting all the Americans who speak English, had English books lying around, and all sorts of American food that they buy on the base -- it was almost like being in the states again.  I even got to drink a glass of kool-aid.  Sue and Steve have only one room to live, eat, and sleep in but they are hoping to move into an apartment in March.  Sue does the cooking on a hot plate, he keeps the coal stove (most apartments are heated by a coal stove, too) going, and the dishes get washed in the bathroom sink.  I was able to stay in Sue's old dorm room which she had leased until February 1.

I took an overnight train to Hannover, flew Pan-Am to W. Berlin and the 13 of us met at a travel bureau there.  Ann had been in Munich for the weekend but she stopped in Münster on the way to Berlin and brought me a letter from Mike and a nice birthday card from Grandma.  I haven't decided yet what to do with the money she sent me.

A bus took us through the wall and over to the East Berlin airport which is the deadest airport I've ever seen.  Our propellor plane to Moscow was pretty dilapidated but there were also double winged, 12 passenger planes which I understand are still in use.  Customs going into the U.S.S.R. wasn't too bad -- they checked one or two of our group's luggage and let the rest of us on through.  The Moscow airport was the next to the deadest I've ever seen.  Especially when one considers it is the 5th largest city in the world.  [now the 19th largest metro area per wikipedia]   Our guide Nonne, a lady of about 35, met us at the airport along with a bus which took us the 17 miles into town.  The flight took 2¾ hours and there was a time change of two hours so we had a short day.

We stayed at the Hotel Metropole which was very centrally located and even had heat in the rooms.  The meals (3 large ones per day) were also fantastic.  I especially liked the Borsch soup and some kind of drink which was slightly carbonated but not sweet like soda pop and came in assorted fruit flavors.

Our first night there we walked over to Red Square and then the 1¼ mile around the Kremlin and saw the changing of the guard at Lenin's tomb.  I certainly felt sorry for the guards standing still for an hour in the bitter cold.

Every place we went during the days the bus took us.  Fortunately, it was also heated.  We got a tour of the city, saw the University, where all the students are paid to study.  We saw the steam on top of the heated swimming pool.  I guess the water is comfortable but even the men are required to wear swimming caps so their hair won't freeze.  Saw and did all sorts of other things which I don't really feel like elaborating on at the moment but everything is written down in my diary so I can tell you about it when I get home.

It was also quite interesting just to talk to our guide.

And there I was in Moscow on my 21st birthday.  It was rather frightening to wake up that morning and suddenly discover I'm a genuine grown-up and fully responsible for all my own actions.  So far everything seems to be going about the same.  It was rather a low blow though when that very day Nonne (our guide, who didn't even know it was my birthday) told me I looked 15.

On Friday afternoon we retraced our path from Moscow to E. Berlin to W. Berlin to Hannover.  Dick and I had decided to spend the weekend in Hamburg so we jumped on a train for there.  But we got there too late to get in the youth hostel so we just stayed on the train and did an overnighter to Copenhagen.  We spent part of Saturday walking around there, even ran into two other K kids, and then headed back to Hamburg.  It's kind of neat because the train goes on a ferry for two hours and you can get off the train and walk around on the boat.  We saw the streets of Hamburg on Saturday night (I wouldn't want too much of that) and two museums on Sunday.  The Youth Hostel is on a hill overlooking the harbor which was nice too.  But it was most exciting to come back home again.  If coming home to Münster is exciting after being gone for 9 days, I can hardly imagine coming home home after six months.

It was nice to find the big birthday card from you all -- my living hasn't reached quite that level of graciousness yet.  And thanks also to Serena for her much appreciated letter.  The bathing suit arrived yesterday and I thank you for such prompt service.  I was also glad to get your letter today and hear the latest news.  The money is also appreciated although not necessary.  At the moment I have 75 DM, $250 travelers checks, $60.75 cash, 12 kopeks (worthless since I won't be going back to Russia for awhile), 40 pfennings from E. Germany, 20 centavos from Portugal (also both worthless), 3 pesetas which I can use in Spain and 21.95 Gilders which I will be using this weekend in Amsterdam.  That should be enough to get me quite comfortably back to New Vienna.

Yes, I am glad I got the Eurorail pass.  Whenever I am lost, bored, tired, or want to go somewhere I just jump on the train and relax.  Ann and I are going down to southern Spain during vacation.  You can reach me March 1-10 ℅ Poste Restantes (Gen. Delivery), Malaga, Spain; March 13 the American Express in Paris; March 15 at home here, and from then until March 20 at American Express in London.  (I'll send you the address later.)  I will probably be flying into New York on the big 747 on Saturday, March 21.  It leaves London at 11 AM and hopefully arrives in New York at 12:45.  What airlines can I get stand-by to Columbus or are they all ⅔ now?  How much will that cost?  Could you also please check on bus connections and costs.  As usual I will need a dentist appointment sometime that week.  School starts on March 30.

Mütti gave me a green sweater with yellow trim for my birthday.  It goes well with my brown skirt.  Mike sent me some yellow & orange & red beads which he made himself.  I'd also like to ask one more favor of you all.  I live in constant dread that this pen is going to run out of ink so I think one more would definitely see me through March 22.

Thanks for guiding me the last 21 years!

Love,
Catherine

1990 Family Letter -Feb.

[Feb 1990]

Dearest Family -

We have talked to all of you this past week and glad to hear that everything is going well with all of you.  Serena went back to work on Thursday for a half day and planned to do that much or more on Friday so that is good news.  Catherine and Wendy were getting ready to have Grandma and the Kings for dinner this evening after attending an overnight program at the library.  Those sleep-overs can be "killers" when they do hit you so hope you are able to rest up on Sunday.  We were happy to receive the picture of Jessica Louise Lopez [Dee's oldest, born Dec. 1989] - I'm sure Gerry and Catherine and of course Wendy are anxious to see Dee Dee and her family in person now.  She'll be further from her mother if they move to San Francisco area - hope they are able to get naval housing there.

Mary Virginia's change of plans for an earlier wedding date was a shock to all of us and hope that it works out well for the rest of the family to come then.  The Morgans are the least sure for they had planned a summer vacation around the August date.

Had a nice chat with John but doubt if we are able to see him on our way to or from New York and it is really best for us to go by way of Cincinnati but thanks for thinking about Dad and the seminar.  That was really a beautiful card too that we received and appreciated the thoughts.

I don't see how Roberta and Sid manage everything with their heavy schedules and their extra guests - Grandma and Beethoven but the latter are company for each other.  Be sure to get extra help if you need it.

This isn't fancy but wanted you to know that we are thinking about all of you even though we didn't invest in fancy Valentines.  It was special us all getting together during the holidays and hope that it won't be so long before we do it again.

This evening was the so called annual meal the NV Lions puts on - we have always had pancakes, but this year changed to a pork chop dinner.  Had about 350 people turn out and it seemed to go well.  The NV Emergency Squad had a campaign underway to raise about $60,000 to buy a new ambulance and they were there with a demonstrator unit.  They have a volunteer staff of 23 people, all in bright red outfits.

We notice the Spring flowers are poking thru the ground, but it is too early to put the snow shovel away.  We have had a lot of orders come to Wells recently and are working one department 24 hours a day.  The FAX machine gets a lot of use.

We took the Kings technique and got two 69¢ "For Sale" signs and put them on the '78 Pontiac, had a phone call within a half hour, got the asking price and the next day took the money to the bank.  The best part was getting 60% more than what a car dealer had offered.  Did all of you have a chance to read the article in the 12/89 Reader's Digest about buying a car?  Very interesting and profitable.

[The following added to John's copy of the letter]

John, thanks for the brochure on the 2/15 meeting - sorry it conflicts w/our going to N.Y.C. - hopefully you can get some notes for me.  Will there be future meetings?

Jane Ann C. & her parents gave us your greetings.  Jane Ann was @ the Lions Club dinner last night.

Are you going "west" next weekend?  MV will be here overnight & has meeting in London, Ohio re the Summer Music program @ Ohio Northern, where she will be in charge of the music.

Love,
Mother & Dad

1980 Roberta Letter -Feb.2

Sunday pm
[2/2/80]
Dear Family,

Hi -- want to get this off tomorrow AM so hopefully you will get it before departing to NYC.

It's sure been a busy week -- between work, school & the idea of moving -- I'm never sure what my time should go for.  We've really gotten the boxes filled this weekend -- but still lots to do!

This Tuesday we have tickets for Bill Gaither Trio [?] -- ASU -- Row 14 middle section.  Not quite as good as last year -- remember Mary Virginia?  No -- it was Evie we all went to when you were here -- she will be out here March 15th.

When are Sankers coming out?  I never heard back from Lowell -- but we are (were) on the go all day.

Have ordered a 22 cubic foot side-by-side refrigerator -- a GE.  The other appliances are also GE.  Not getting the water/ice deal on the door -- but am getting ice maker installed ($59 extra).  Sure will be nice to have ready made ice cubes.

Dr. Sears (1st Meth.) fell over a fence he had around his garden -- meant to scare off the rabbits.  He broke -- cracked whatever 5 ribs -- he's been home -- guess unable to even talk w/out pain.

Friday afternoon an active member of 1st United Meth. was murdered in his barbershop, held up for some $100!  There have really been lots of murders in Mesa in 1980 -- like 5 or 6.  One being a 14-year-old who lived not far from Madeyes [?].

Sure wish you all were out here to see the completed (inside) house!  The outside tho -- it still is -- well -- a mess!  We've been trying to figure out about the back yard -- to put in grass or rocks.  Think we will probably go for the grass -- be much better for Buffy -- & cooler for us!

Sorry about all the confusion on the checks -- Thanks!

Love,
Roberta
