Dearest Family --I really feel guilty when I haven't at least started a letter to you all by Tuesday but here's another week almost half gone and no letter out yet. Was glad to talk to Catherine and Wendy Friday morning and sorry to miss Serena's call Saturday. Do hope you are feeling much better by now. Felt relieved that you were able to go someplace later in the day when we tried to get you back but anxious too til we got to talk to you Sunday morning. Would love to talk to all of you and think of each of you so often but hesitate to just call so really look forward to your letters.
The weather has been just beautiful here -- real summerish. Yesterday I finally got down the rest of the storm windows and screens cleaned and put in so we can enjoy the air inside the house. It is often cooler inside than out -- The windows are temporarily clean until another rain comes up. It started to rain while I was in the midst but didn't last long and soon was beautiful again.
Dad and Jim Wise drove to Indianapolis yesterday to attend meetings of the Methodist General Conference - the nearest it may ever come to us. It only meets once every four years and has been in the news with some of its decisions (regarding hostages in Iran, etc.). They are meeting for ten days and so they were in on just a wee bit but at least got a peek of the proceedings.
Saturday Dad and I went to Dayton - I wanted to attend a meeting at the Dayton Library on the notable books of 1979 which I thought was really worthwhile. We tried three restaurants before we found an unusual one open. One ("Joe's Is a Fish Restaurant") doesn't open until evening on Saturday and Chi-Chi's was advertised in the phone book but isn't finished yet -- it's located where Totentko, the Japanese restaurant was. We ended up at T.G.I. Friday's which we had heard much about but were quite pleased with it. There are several others around the country including Phoenix. They are rather a sedate Farrell's but not so much just for desserts and sandwiches. We had an excellent spinach salad plus two Mexican dishes -- really large servings -- we managed to finish the salad but brought home enough of the other two to feed MV that evening and we still weren't hungry. We noticed so many people carrying out plastic trays with covers so guess we weren't the only ones. Grandma would really have been floored. They have all kinds of food -- Mexican, Italian, Quiches, steaks, sandwiches, so something for everyone.
Perhaps the big news of last week was the fact that they gave us our diplomas for finishing Conversational Spanish but we and about 8 or nine others are planning to go back this evening to continue the course while we can still remember some of it. He had said that we would have a test last week and we were all dreading it but for some reason which we didn't ask he didn't give us one. Virginia Walker was really worried about it. Told her that now she knows how her students feel -- I'm sure she has much more sympathy and empathy than before. He is only 29 (teacher - Corey Soldano) but he can make us old people really feel dumb especially when he calls our name unexpectedly or even expectedly for we often just freeze up, our minds go blank and we forget all the rules of pronunciation, etc. We do think he is doing a good job and really working hard to help us -- he felt badly that five or six had dropped out (including MV). She is bored but could well use the conversational part of it but is insulted when we suggest it. Doubt if they use too much Spanish on their own when they are in Mexico but do hope that they do. Its amazing how much more aware we are of what's in Spanish like the census. From the news this morning we will be taking in more Cubans -- morally we should but legally is another question.
[Love, etc.]
