1950 HH, Jean & Catherine pictures -April

The first two pictures on the top row were taken at the CJU house in New Vienna.  I'm sure the older of us siblings remember the old fashioned phone.  All the other pictures except the first two and the last one were taken In St. Petersburg.  Jean's Mother "Dear" is featured in the first picture on the second row.  The picture on the right in the bottom row (which shows HH's hand and dark suit in the background) is captioned: On stopes of Alabama Capitol -- Apr. 14, 1950.  Catherine's First Capitol.

The picture below shows the three generations: Lucie, Jean and Catherine

1980 Catherine's Letter -Apr.30

Wed. 4-30-80
Dear Mother, Dad & Mary,

Hi!  Here we are in the midst of another week.  Your letter came on Monday -- thanks for all the clippings.  We had some friends over for dinner last night.  They have 2 little girls (6 & 2½) so Wendy had a good time.  Since Bob & Emily (who we are going to the coast with) are moving away this summer we figure we better get to know some other people better.  Plus it is so much nicer to have people over now that we have more space.

Tonight after work we are going over to the Jackman's to get the run down on the cabin, the keys, etc. and then Bob & Emily are coming over so we can plan what we want to take.  The cabin is in Yachats (pronounced Yah-hots).  This weekend is Loyalty Days festival in Newport so we plan to go over there on Saturday.

Tomorrow night Wendy & I have appointments at the beauty shop, she's getting a trim and I'm getting a new permanent.  So we are keeping busy this week.

We had our first outdoor BBQ last Sunday.  We grilled hamburgers with Bob & Emily and then watched "Same Time Next Year" on HBO starring Alan Alda.  It was a good movie.

Well, it is our lunch hour and it's time to go back to work so I better close.

Hope you have a good weekend as we're sure looking forward to ours.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

1980 Family Letter -Apr.29

Tuesday --
April 29, 1980
Dearest Family -

After our brief spell of beautiful warm weather it is much cooler and doesn't feel too springlike but it is to improve this weekend.  As soon as I took the last letter out of the typewriter, mail from the family began to appear so guess the best way to get mail is to write more often.   The same day Grandma sent up the prints from Joe's 79 collection of lithographs and cards which were greatly appreciated and I'll be glad to share with the rest of you in order that we might all have some.  It was too bad that the Hortons weren't able to get to Saudi Arabia to be with Joe during his last exhibition but with the unrest all through that area no doubt it was for the best.

John's most recent letter reported that the tandem is now in workable condition and he and Carol have been riding it since Steve Weiss worked on it following their taking it back to Newark with them Easter Sunday.  I had had my doubts whether it was worth taking but glad that it is back in use again.  I've been trying to remember when it was that Catherine and Roberta worked to save their money to buy it.  I think the Schamauns took it in their trailer to Lakeside so that we all might be able to enjoy it up there.  Has it been about 15 years?  or more?  Thanks too for the articles on Newark.

I was sorry not to be home when Serena called again last Saturday morning but glad that Mary Virginia was here to relay some messages.  Sorry that you had to miss any work but trust that you are feeling much better by now.  We'd be glad to come to Chicago that Labor Day Weekend but think that you might enjoy getting away from the area.  We are hoping to get to see you the weekend of May 31-June 1 - perhaps leaving here late Friday afternoon and Dad wants to make some calls that Monday so would have a couple of days to see you.  (Haven't heard anything about Pam Fisher as yet.)

Roberta, we were sorry not to be more aware of Marion's birthday.   Wish that you had given us some little reminder before the date.  I kept thinking that it was Ruth's or someones but didn't dawn on me whose until your last letter.  Thanks for your Fast-Food Calorie Counter which was most interesting to compare the various sizes of hamburgers at the different chains.  Do hope that your aerobics classes are going well.  Was good talking to you Saturday and get some of our questions answered and your thought on various things.

Always enjoy Catherine's calls and appreciate her taking the time out of her busy schedule - especially so early in the morning for her.  We are so looking forward to seeing their new home, the changes in Wendy as well as Madras in warm weather.  Hope all works out for the new position open in the assessor's office including a substantial raise.  Bet both you and Gerry are most happy to have some time to call your own after giving up the managers' jobs.  Would love to have pictures of both your place and Roberta and Marion's too.

Sunday was a full day and we were sorry to have to eliminate some of the things that were also scheduled.  One was the open house for the new Sabina Library but as Dad says we can see it anytime.  The Sankers had been invited up for the day but decided to postpone their visit as we felt we should go to the memorial services for Mr. Arthur McCoy at Fairview.  There were no calling hours at Smith Reynolds Funeral Home as he was buried the day after he passed away.  (They also had the funeral of Maynard Davids who passed away the same day -- sorry that we didn't get over to pay our respects there)

That same evening we had been asked to help serve the Senior Citizens Banquet at the church - there were about 45 honored there and Mrs. Matthews was brought over by Mary Virginia.  She had had  a most interesting letter from her granddaughter Diane who now lives in England.  She had attended a Christian Woman's Club luncheon and happened to sit beside Pat Bain's mother.  In the course of the conversation Mrs. Bains mentioned that she had just gotten a letter from her son and daughter-in-law in New Vienna, Ohio . . . [these few lines on the bottom of page 1 of the letter are typed over each other so not sure of the exact wording] . . . (Diane is Dr. Matthews - Charles' oldest daughter.)  Ann Wolfrom and her mother are leaving Sunday for a month in England and hope to get in touch with the Baines.

I have really enjoyed the meetings of the Christian Woman's Club and wonder if they are in your areas too.  The April meeting was guest night and so I took Dad and Mary Virginia and think they were surprised how interesting, enthusiastic and well run they are.  The speakers are outstanding and no minutes are wasted as happens in so many meetings.  Our UMW meetings could take note as Catherine and I have commiserated about lately.

I talked to Aunt Virginia a week or so ago and she told me that Sarah is back in training to be an airline stewardess again and will be moving her children wherever she will be based.  Joe plans to be married next year.  I hope to get her (Aunt Virginia) over for a visit in late June - talked to Maureen and she says that she could bring her part way as she doesn't think she'd fly here.  She says that her mother is better physically but about the same otherwise.

I went over to the school Saturday morning to catch up with some work that is hard to do with classes coming in - rode my bicycle but when I came home found it missing.  Thought that Dad or Mary Virginia had borrowed it but they knew nothing about it so have reported it missing.  Guess we have really been lucky in not losing any more than we have in the many years we have been riding.  I almost had ridden MV's but glad I didn't now.

Dad took Grandma and Elizabeth Johnson to see the movie "Jesus" at the Murphy last night.  I had seen it earlier at a preview and both Dad and I thought I could use the time to better advantage studying for the Spanish test we are to have this Wednesday night.  At least it is scheduled again.

Saturday Mary Virginia and I went over to Sweetwater Farm near Hillsboro where they were having an open house.  They sell western clothes, Amish baked goods, cheese, etc.  Mary Virginia bought a western hat with a fancy band made out of feathers.  She wanted to wear it to church Sunday but I sure didn't encourage that and then she wouldn't wear it to school for fear it would be taken there.

Your Mother has covered about all the areas, tho while they were shopping Saturday afternoon I did put out some more garden, which was lucky timing as it turned wet on Sunday.  The things that I put out the week before are now coming up and we enjoy seeing the change each day as the plants grow.  Helped our neighbor across the street put out two trees, so hope they live as they will give us a better view also.  Carolyn [Frump] F. &    ?    [Paul] Spurlock have bought [the house?]

It is Wells insurance time again and plan to switch companies as we can get $133M more coverage for some 15% less premium.  With inflation one never has enough insurance, but then there is the other extreme where you can be insurance poor.  Inflation hits home so often, as just yesterday we ordered some 16M for roofing replacement . . . vicious cycle.  Anyway, I feel that Wells is better off buying things than just sitting watching the value of the dollar go down hill.  [Reminder that M is the roman number for thousand.]

Dad and I both got some shoes for square dancing -- Dad's are low cowboy boots and real pretty back, shiny.

Dad brought home your letter, Roberta and glad to hear so quickly -- Also card from Catherine came yesterday.  Don't be concerned about not having any kind of transportation while we're in Arizona.  Dad is looking forward to riding the new cycle.  If two can ride on one, there's no problem.

Running out of space and time

Much love to all of you.

2020 GHU makes news -Apr.21

The following is copied from an article by Jeff Gilliland about a Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education Meeting held on April 19, 2020.  First news about the donation of Gladys' banners was received from GG and then again by Patty Walker Ryan.  I was beginning to wonder if this was something that had been mentioned to me and I had forgotten or what was the story?

"Also noted was the donation of two banners by the family of Gladys Hiestand Uible, a 1911 Hillsboro High School graduate, which evidently come from the time she was attending the school. One of the banners is purple and white and the other is purple and gold. Davis said they will likely be placed on some sort of plaque in the board office or high school office." -- The Times Gazette, April 21, 2020.

Hillsboro Superintendent Tim Davis holds a pair of 1911 era banners that were recently donated to the school.

The following clipping comes from the Highland County Press:

Then in yesterday's mail came the answer to the mystery in a letter from Angela Horton which included the thank you note from Hillsboro City Schools.  Angela reports that the banners "were well done, sewn, wool felt.  Not printed or "stamped" as they are today . . . and her name is on the back."

THANK YOU!

Dear Angela,

Thank you so much for the banners, they are awesome!!  I will have them put on display either at our high school or in our boardroom.  I will also make a name plate that reads, donated by the family of Gladys Hiestand, Hillsboro High School Class of 1911.  I will also present them at our board meeting  Monday April 20th.

Thank you again for donating a great piece of our school's history.

1980 Roberta's Letter -Apr.27

Sunday A.M.
[4/27?/80]
Dear Family,

Thanks for both the letter and the phone call yesterday.  We had been in and out all day so glad that you found us at home.  I'm almost done with my project for the class at ASU -- thanks to all the help I've had.  Went down to Mesa Parks and Recreation and got some of the master plans for parks in Mesa -- also some of the blueprints for pools -- which were a giant help in getting it all down on paper.  I was in shock over the price of poster paper now -- 65¢ per sheet.  I'm using two sheets -- one for the layout of the pool -- and details concerning it.  The second being for the layout of the whole park -- and then details concerning sizes of ball-fields, tennis courts, etc.  I'll be glad to have it in -- and hope for an A out of the class.

Planning on taking a course this summer called "readings and conference" -- that way I only have to attend the first class and do the rest on my own time.  I can pick the topic -- within reason.  I'll go through late registration -- June 2nd -- so that they don't have use of my money till then!!!

I completed the whole program at the health fair.  Did the first five or six tests on Saturday and went back on Sunday for the blood tests, etc.  Everything came out just fine -- except that the eye test showed that I need either reading glasses or bi-focals.  It has been some three years since I had my eyes tested last so really do need to get in to an eye doctor for an exams.  Also the dental part showed that I need "further evaluation."  But my lung capacity was excellent.  The health fair took place all over the valley last week.  A church out in East Mesa was one of the locations -- but had more people there than they could handle -- some 3,000.  Over 5,000 people took part in the one at the mall -- it was completely free except for the blood tests which were $6.00.

I have been meaning to tell you all that Marion is planning on driving back in the truck this summer -- which is fine with me because I really don't need the truck here -- with my bike.  Also her bike will be here -- so I'll be fine.  Now the question is -- would you like me to rent a car for the whole time you are here -- with the idea of going to Mexico I hesitate to do that.  I can borrow a car from the Stubbs to come and pick you all up . . . at the airport.  Cars would be cheaper to rent here in Mesa than at the airport.  Another possibility is that we rent a car for the first week-end you are here (they advertise good "weekend" rates) then go to Mexico -- and play it be ear from there.  Marion does not know that you are flying out -- she thinks that you are driving out -- thus having a car here.

Marion hopes to have her folks come back out here with her the end of August.  Guess go up to Idaho Falls first and visit with her sister and then here.  They could never make the trip by car -- and their only flying experience was a disaster.  Tho with this plan they would have to fly from here to Ill.  But in August/September the weather would be good -- as it was the weather that messed them up the last time they flew.

It has been one thing and then another with this house.  Now the whole back porch is torn up -- and hopefully will be redone tomorrow.  With all these people coming in next Saturday to eat.  We did go ahead and get sun screens -- for the two bedroom doors -- and the small window in the front.  Have got a screen door now for the front door -- but need to get it on.  Buffy better never ruin these sun screens or he is in real trouble.  They really do help with the amount of sun that comes in the house -- and should make a difference on the electric bill.  Its a shame that one has to get mean and nasty with the builder to get something done.

It has been in the talk stage for the last month -- but finally came through officially Friday.  I'm now the center coordinator (sp) for the East Mesa Center -- I'm still doing what I've been doing for the last two months -- just means that now I get to sign my name to all the many forms/paper work that goes through!!!  It does mean a decent salary raise -- which I'll be happy to have.  They had ordered me the enclosed cards some time back but just gave them to me yesterday -- Friday -- when I was told that it was now official.  Think I told you that Grayce was hired to work out there.  A 61-year-old -- who has a terrible temper -- always getting into it with or about one of the seniors.  She is really too close to their age -- We now have the funding for another - but only a four hour a day slot.  It comes from Title Five money -- so has to be over 55 years old.  Wish I knew someone that would be good -- Grayce has someone in mind -- but I'm not too excited about the idea of that.

Need to be going -- plan to go to 9:45 church . . . .

Love, Berta

Nice talking to you this A.M. Mother.  Please don't say anything in your letters regarding Gerry's knees as he hates it to sound like he's a cripple.  I got an orchid in a little vase for secretary's week.  It's a a beautiful day but reports of rain for the weekend.  How is your garden doing?  Hope you are having good weather.

1980 Roberta's Letter -Apr.25?

[4/25/80?]
Friday Morning
Dear Family,

It's Friday . . . and get to start off a little slower as having a meeting in town at 8:00 this AM.  We finally have a driver now.  He started on Monday and will be with us till about the end of May.

Starting in June we will be using all volunteer drivers -- hope the set-up works as well as it does for them in town.

Thanks for your last letter . . . and the Morgans address.  Plan to get the shorts off to Catherine this week-end.  Sure has turned summer here fast.  Today it is supposed to get up to 103º . . . thats pretty warm.  I told Marion it will have to be 100º five days straight before the Air Conditioning goes on.  So far by opening the house up at night we are getting by nicely.

Tomorrow is Marion's birthday . . . also Rich Stubbs.  Had talked about going camping but have decided to have a cookout at home instead.  Don't think I have mentioned about this big dinner Marion is having here on May 3rd . . . for one of the teachers she teaches with . . . retiring at the end of this year.  Some 20-23 people will be here.  Sure hope it doesn't rain.

I really like my aerobics class . . . last night was the third time we have met . . . and by now the class is about half the size . . . down from 30 to 15 people.  I come home a little tired.  I have ordered the record that we use for the class so hope to use parts of it out at the center.  The aerobics teacher keeps saying that jumping rope is one of the best exercises.

We do not have any grass yet out front.  Weeds tho are beginning to come.  In the back we really have thick grass.  The push lawnmower does not work so hot on it either.  Seems like it won't cut it short enough.  I'm getting a a little upset about all the work that was never done in the house . . . that should have been fixed or repaired by now.  I've called up the Registrar of Contractors and they will be out on Monday.  Can you take these people to anything like Small Claims Court or anything???  Now all the units in our section are filled except for the one right beside us . . . to the right.

Now Saturday AM -- getting ready to go to Health Fair -- put on at Fiesta Mall -- for $6 -- suppose to be able to get over $100 worth of tests -- blood tests, etc. -- foot exam -- cancer tests; etc. --

Got 92 MPG on last fill-up on bike!!!

Love,
Roberta

1990 Roberta's Letter -Apr.24

This letter is written on the back of a Tokyo Express menu/placemat.
Prices range from $2-$4.45 for entrees, drinks are 63¢ or 83¢ for large.
Desserts are $1.45

Hi!

We ate here -- good food at great prices -- will be one built not far from us!  Sid is actually watching a movie on T.V. -- Bill Cosby in Leonard V -- take off from a spy type movie!  Very Weird!  Or is it Wierd?

Catherine was over today -- gave her the letters / shirt / scarf -- but forgot to give her the placemats!  Next time!

Had a very pleasant surprise yesterday -- called the payroll person at FSL to find out about a staff's hours & asked about my vacation time -- was told 150 hours vacation / 230 hours sick leave!  I questioned that -- was told that my supervisor had "upped" my vacation hours due to my dropping the Health Insurance.  I put in sick leave for last week!  I'll be using up 32 hours vacation hours between Green Valley & a trip to Ohio.  If I do stay till the 17th my boss said to take those in sick leave & then plan some fun times.  I bought her a sweatshirt of Univ. of Kansas last night!

Was not able to buy any AZ shirts but did buy quite a variety of other states -- including Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Do call here if you need to get hold of us.  Bev will be here & will be able to reach us.  Miss Ella is not doing real well -- wish she had taught Elem. School -- & not college level.  She really isn't a very good driver -- for example she herself said she didn't want to pull in the driveway down at the office for fear she may hit something!  I've got a feeling if she were "forced" to drive the FSC van she will quit quick!  (she said before hired she could drive it!).  I've got a few calls to make to local churches to see about our prospects!

This AM she (Miss Ella) got lost in Smith's doing her weekly shopping!  Meanwhile the residents were standing outside waiting for her!

We have a new private pay moving in May 15th.  She has no family but good friends that live near 43rd & Dunlap.

I think of you all & Grandma often.  Just thankful that Grandma has such good help.  We've often had residents families comment how a resident gets closer to staff here than their own family & I can now understand that better -- Esp. when a resident's grandchildren only come at Christmas!

Much Love,
Roberta

1970 Olney News (Roberta) -Apr.25

This is a great article about a good experience some of Roberta's friends had thanks to the hospitality of the Uibles (or "Ubiles" according to the article).  Thanks to the mention of Roberta, we can be positive he was thinking of HH & Jean.  Only the paragraphs about The Ubiles are being transcribed below

HIKERS FIND PEOPLE WHO CARE

. . . Finally we decided to go visit an old friend of ours who lives nearby, Roberta Ubile.  We drove the 20 miles to her home and were greeted by her parents who were very friendly.  They offered us a place to spend the night but replied that Roberta was staying at an apartment near the place we had just come from.  So we drove back, burning up more of our precious gas.  We had a nice talk but we were anxious to get back and get to bed because we hadn't had anything to eat.

When we returned, tired, hungry and disgruntled, Roberta's parents greeted us again with a table full of goodies and gave us towels to bathe with.  We had a very satisfied and comfortable sleep that night and woke up to the smell of toast and eggs.  It was a beautiful day, and our spirits rose as we started off toward the Smokies refreshed and with hot food nestled inside.

As we bombed along the road discussing our wonderful treatment from the Ubiles, I reached into the sack of apples they had provided us.  My hand fell on paper, and I brought out an envelope with the words "Good Luck Boys" scribbled on the front.  I ripped off the end and found inside two five-dollar bills.

1980 Family Letter -Apr.23

Wednesday -
April 23, 1980
Dearest Family --

I really feel guilty when I haven't at least started a letter to you all by Tuesday but here's another week almost half gone and no letter out yet.  Was glad to talk to Catherine and Wendy Friday morning and sorry to miss Serena's call Saturday.  Do hope you are feeling much better by now.  Felt relieved that you were able to go someplace later in the day when we tried to get you back but anxious too til we got to talk to you Sunday morning.  Would love to talk to all of you and think of each of you so often but hesitate to just call so really look forward to your letters.

The weather has been just beautiful here -- real summerish.  Yesterday I finally got down the rest of the storm windows and screens cleaned and put in so we can enjoy the air inside the house.  It is often cooler inside than out -- The windows are temporarily clean until another rain comes up.  It started to rain while I was in the midst but didn't last long and soon was beautiful again.

Dad and Jim Wise drove to Indianapolis yesterday to attend meetings of the Methodist General Conference - the nearest it may ever come to us.  It only meets once every four years and has been in the news with some of its decisions (regarding hostages in Iran, etc.).  They are meeting for ten days and so they were in on just a wee bit but at least got a peek of the proceedings.

Saturday Dad and I went to Dayton - I wanted to attend a meeting at the Dayton Library on the notable books of 1979 which I thought was really worthwhile.  We tried three restaurants before we found an unusual one open.  One ("Joe's Is a Fish Restaurant") doesn't open until evening on Saturday and Chi-Chi's was advertised in the phone book but isn't finished yet -- it's located where Totentko, the Japanese restaurant was.  We ended up at T.G.I. Friday's which we had heard much about but were quite pleased with it.  There are several others around the country including Phoenix.  They are rather a sedate Farrell's but not so much just for desserts and sandwiches.  We had an excellent spinach salad plus two Mexican dishes -- really large servings -- we managed to finish the salad but brought home enough of the other two to feed MV that evening and we still weren't hungry.  We noticed so many people carrying out plastic trays with covers so guess we weren't the only ones.  Grandma would really have been floored.  They have all kinds of food -- Mexican, Italian, Quiches, steaks, sandwiches, so something for everyone.

Perhaps the big news of last week was the fact that they gave us our diplomas for finishing Conversational Spanish but we and about 8 or nine others are planning to go back this evening to continue the course while we can still remember some of it.  He had said that we would have a test last week and we were all dreading it but for some reason which we didn't ask he didn't give us one.  Virginia Walker was really worried about it.  Told her that now she knows how her students feel -- I'm sure she has much more sympathy and empathy than before.  He is only 29 (teacher - Corey Soldano) but he can make us old people really feel dumb especially when he calls our name unexpectedly or even expectedly for we often just freeze up, our minds go blank and we forget all the rules of pronunciation, etc. We do think he is doing a good job and really working hard to help us -- he felt badly that five or six had dropped out (including MV).  She is bored but could well use the conversational part of it but is insulted when we suggest it.  Doubt if they use too much Spanish on their own when they are in Mexico but do hope that they do.  Its amazing how much more aware we are of what's in Spanish like the census.  From the news this morning we will be taking in more Cubans -- morally we should but legally is another question.

[Love, etc.]

1990 Roberta's Letter -Apr.22

[4-22-90]

Hi!  What do you think of the address on the freedom forum?

Paul McCartney of the Beetles in PHX tonight -- over 65,000 people to be there!  Some seats were over $500.00 each!  We will read about it in tomorrow's paper!  Some fans were flying in from all over the WEST to see the concert!

We have to take CPR tomorrow night.  Hope to leave by 11am on Friday for the weekend -- then will get back by Monday Aftn.  This time last year we were down in Tucson seeing Dad.  (& unloaded our freezers w/ food Bank items).

Did you read the National Enquirer article about Malcolm Forbes?

Love,
Roberta

1990 Cindy Uible's Letter to John -Apr.18

April 18, '90
Dear John,

How are you.  I am fine.  I been wanting to write to you since we talked on the phone.  It was real nice to talk to you.  I have been busy in the last few months.  I went to Washington D.C. and saw my brother and some sights.  It was fun to see him.

I have been busy with my birds.  I am raising and breeding Umbrella Cockatoos.  I hope to have eggs by the end of April.  I also have an African Grey who talks up a storm.

I have also been busy with my clowning.  Enclosed is me as "No-Body" the tramp clown and also is "Pierre" my African Grey.  I go also as "Punky" (or "Purdy"?) the clown but I don't have any up to date pictures.  My Grandfather has been in the hospital this week but so far he is doing ok.  We hope he will be [home] this Friday.  We thought that he might have had a stroke or heart attack but the doctors say so far he is ok.

"No-Body" has won awards in make-up & costumes in the Southeastern clown conventions and also World Clown Convention.  Well I guess I better go now.  Hope to hear from you soon.

Smiles

1980 Catherine's Letter -Apr.21

4-21-80
Monday morning
Der Mother, Dad & Mary,

Hi!  Sorry I didn't get a letter off to you last week but our first week in our new house my time seemed all taken up with other matters.  We also had a busy weekend but at least it was busy with things we wanted to do.

We found a new babysitter who lives about ½ block away.  She is the daughter of one of the appraiser's at work who Gerry also knows through the Elks.  She babysat Thurs. & Saturday nights for us.  She's a junior in H.S. and she & Wendy got along real well.

Thursday night I played Bunco which you might recall my mentioning before.  I am a substitute.  It is a group of 12 which meets once a month.  I won $8 -- five which it costs to play and other $3 went to the babysitter so I broke even.  Gerry had gone to the Elks.

Friday night we had Emily & Bob over.  They will be going to the coast with us to enjoy the Jackman's cabin -- that is now planned for the weekend of May 3rd-5th.

We had the Jackmans over for dinner last night and that weekend is OK with them for us to use it.

Saturday night Gerry was in charge of a benefit dance at the Elks for Julie Akers and her Up with People fund.  She is the daughter of Judy who works with him at the co-op.  She made $510 after paying her band so it was fairly successful.

Tonight I am going to the AAUW meeting and Gerry is going to go over the inventory list with the new apt. managers.  We finally heard from them yesterday and they are going to move in today evidently.  It is a relief for us that someone else will be there.

Well, I am at work now so I better close and get this into the mail.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

1990 Catherine's Letter -Apr.17

4-17-90
Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  Thanks for the check for the tickets -- we're really looking forward to coming.

Sorry to hear that Grandma is doing so poorly.  Roberta called us last night and gave us a progress report and explained the extension of her visit to Ohio.  I'm glad that she is able to be there.

We had our first 100º day here on Easter.  The hot weather will be here soon.  Gerry says he loves the air conditioning he has at work now (Robert Crist only had an evaporative cooler).  His new job seems to be going real well.

Wendy's class is going on two field trips next week -- one to the Junior High (where they'll have lunch) and one to the White Tanks -- the mountains just west of Glendale.

Got to go.  Thanks again for the tickets!

Love,

1980 Family Letter -Apr.16

Wednesday --
April 15, 1980
Dearest Family,

After alot of damp, cold weather it at last looks like spring today and is most welcome.  Hope that the Morgans got everything moved successfully -- it sure was like winter last Sunday when we thought of you moving your big things.  Wendy's drawings arrived in good shape on Monday along with your card, Catherine and your note came yesterday -- thanks for all.

Sorry to hear that Arizona has had more floods which complicates things for the commuters across the bridges.  Did you know that Jim Wise's parents are moving to Tempe as soon as they are able to sell their house up near Toledo.  Jim told me that his sister has had several houses in mind for them but they haven't been able to leave as yet.  Appreciated the pictures you sent from the paper about the high water.  Hope you like the Famolare sandals you got with the floral delivery money at Easter.  (I really like my pair of Famolares but wish they weren't so heavy -- I feel clumsy in them but they are comfortable.

It was good talking to Serena -- she always seems to anticipate our plans to call her and beats us to the punch but we may win yet -- so glad that she had a nice weekend in Michigan and glad to get news of the Davis family.  Too bad that Bobbie is having more problems but hopefully will soon be much better.  Glad that Dad was home when she called this time.

Appreciated the letter from John and Carol so soon after their return and in a way sorry that the house deal fell through but guess it opens the way for better things especially when there were problems involving the driveway sharing one among other things.  Dad really appreciated the enclosures on Park Bank.

The articles you sent from the Madras paper were most interesting Catherine -- I had never heard of AWANA and plan to pass it on to Jim Wise.  Also shared the article on Elliott Roosevelt with Mr. Fenwick who was here for dinner last night.  He too had worked a Wright Patterson during the war.  It is amazing how much Elliott looks like his father.

Please tell Wendy that we put her drawings in a special place in the kitchen where we can see them often and wish that we could see her at work and play.  Anxious to hear how she likes her new home and adapts to it.  Sorry that her clown didn't arrive for Easter but it really wasn't Easterish anyway so guess it didn't matter.

Our last night of this session of Spanish class is tonight and we have a test again which we are rather fearful but amazed how much we have been exposed to in seven short weeks.  There are no grades taken or given but we hate to show too much ignorance.  They are planning a second session to follow immediately and many of our class are continuing (five out of 16 have dropped out including MV but she does help us at home), Virginia Walker will be going to Spain before the last lessons end but she thought she would still take them possibly -- she is going with her sister to visit Nancy -- not particularly anxious to go at this time for she is staying such a short time in order to be back to make final plans for Betty Ann's wedding.  Audrey Terrell who is also in the class will be taking a week or two off as she is going to Greece to visit a friend there.  Another member of the class was in Mexico over Easter vacation with her family visiting a brother and sister-in-law so she put her Spanish to good use and brought back alot of interesting comments, etc.

Last Saturday night the "Messingers" gave a concert at the Church, they had gone all-out on decorations including a continuous fountain for background.  Sunday noon we ate out at the new restaurant in Wilmington (nothing too exciting) and the ladies went to the last music program at the High School, while Grandma and I made some calls at Extended Care and the County Home, where Faye Thornburg is . . . she always tells us how she recalls you children in action when you had the WNJ route.

Hi!  The clown for Wendy arrived yesterday.  It sure is cute and she took an immediate liking to it.  We got the keys to the house yesterday although Mrs. Wms. spent last night there.  We are going to start carting things over this evening.  Also there is a blood drive today.  3 people from eugene came over yesterday to interview new managers and took us out to lunch.  Our former boss, Sandi, is also leaving Chambers next week.  Hope all is well.

1980 Catherine's Letter -Apr.12

Sat. 4-12-80
Dear Mother, Dad & Mary,

Hi!  I have alot of moving to do today but wanted to get these clippings off to you before they get lost in the shuffle.  Also I mailed two of Wendy's "paintings" to you yesterday so hope you get them OK.

I have another load of kitchen and Misc. stuff to take over to the house this afternoon and then we'll just have the big furniture type items to do tomorrow when we have help.

At least we are having good weather -- it is in the 70's today -- the nicest day we've had yet this year.  The Elks is having a Captain's Platter dinner tonight so we won't have to worry about dinner either.

I better get back to packing.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry

1980 Roberta's Letter - Apr.9

[4/9/90]
Wednesday PM --
Dear Family,
Hi!  Glad to be able to have talked to you all this last week -- tho it seems hard to find Mary Virginia at home!

Sure had a busy week-end over Easter -- delivered flowers all day on Saturday (spent the $ on a pair of bargain Famolare -- sandals -- my 1st pair of Famolare sandals!)  Sunday afternoon I delivered little Easter bunnies our people had made -- out of cotton balls & small milk cartons.  Took them down to the Royal Nursing Home.

We ate our Brunch at the Other Place -- Mesa -- really was good.  Thought it was much better than the one we had eaten at in Tempe -- both in the restaurant itself & food.  Marion filled up on the pastry table -- but there was lots of fresh fruit -- and good selection of vegetables -- both raw and cooked.  We had the wheelchair Dial-a-Ride take Agnes -- I rode w/ her going down.  She really ate -- everything but green beans -- which she says she get every day.

Really beginning to get HOT here - up in the 90's today.  I still wear gloves/winter coat in the AM -- but by afternoon just right w/ short sleeve top.

Karry (Marion's niece) went w/ me to my 1st Aerobic class -- really was fun.  She is in her 4th week of classes in it -- so a big help to me.  Tonight stopped on my way home from school to get pair of tights -- we were strongly encouraged to get either tights or support hose -- for support legs.  My legs were little sore after first class.  About 30 in the class -- most last week were in complete stretch gym suit / tights, etc.  Wide range of ages -- from about 16 to 60!

We are going on "field trips" on my Wednesday night class -- looking at pools -- recreational facilities.  Last week was Chandler -- tonight made a "tour" of 2 places in Scottsdale.  I don't find it all too exciting -- but w/ alot of effort (& help!) hope to get an A out of the course.

Mary Virginia -- how are you getting along?  Have you completely decided against Friends Boarding School?  IF you need help getting in -- I'll be glad to write a reference letter in your behalf!

They (Salt River Project) have to keep releasing water -- due to snow melting, etc. -- so only the 3 bridges open -- Marion is still car-pooling -- thank goodness!  By leaving at 6:15 -- only takes them 45 minutes to go the -- what would be direct to the school -- 13 miles!

We still don't have a van driver -- so I'm still driving -- leave the van in town at night -- at the new center -- So miles aren't getting piled on too much on new bike.  Only some 250 miles!!

Hope all is fine -- hope you can read my scribbles!!

Love,
Berta

Hi!  Lovely snowstorm we had last week but it is beginning to melt.  Classes aren't bad, I don't mind German too much and I'm getting really interested in Hinduism.  I'm pretty uncoordinated in badminton.  Dick is helping with T group sensitivity training sessions so I am going to them, there's the peace vigil once a week at the post office.  I may get in some yoga and I am not working at Saga.  I had a good time over the weekend -- of course I spent most of it with Dick -- a party or two, and we saw "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice."  We managed to squeeze in some studying too!  Cal's (and my) friend from Colorado is coming April 19.  Alan and I (and possibly Dick) are going to give blood to the Red Cross today.  Tomorrow Dick and I babysit for Flo and Francis.  Thanks for card.

Love, Catherine

1990 Catherine's Fax -Apr.3

Note:  As demonstrated below the kind of paper that faxes were printed on in 1990 does not hold up well over a 30-year period.

To:  Harold & Jean Uible
From: Catherine, Gerry & Wendy
Date:  Tuesday, April 3, 1990.  1:35pm (mountain standard time!)

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  I especially wanted to say:

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Speaking as the eldest of your children, I think I can say that we're all very pleased that the two of you decided to get married and that there is still reason to celebrate 42 years later.  Why does that number make me feel older?

We're looking forward to coming to Ohio next month.  Thanks to Mary Virginia for giving me an occasion.  As Roberta may have mentioned to you, Gerry has a new job.  He started yesterday at a place called Jerry's RV.  Robert Crist decided to close their Phoenix store effective June 1 so Gerry is fortunate to have been offered this other job now, Jerry's is at 47th & Grand -- about 4½ miles from our house.  So the driving distance is about the same.  Gerry thinks that there is more potential for him in this job so that is another positive factor. At any rate that is another reason for our abbreviated trip to Ohio.  (By the way the grand total for the airline tickets is $310.)

I want to get this off to you before 5:00 (your time) just in case Dad is leaving early today.  maybe he took the day off though???Are you doing anything special to celebrate?

Wendy is having Iowa Tests this week.  Do they take them in New Vienna?  She is looking forward to her spring break next week.  We are also in hopes that Dee and baby Jessica will be coming to visit us later this month.

Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote.  I still have a clipping to send but it will have to wait for a "regular" letter.  Hope it's a special year for you and much happiness together.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

April 1, 1970
Hi!  Happy Anniversary!

The quarter here is in full swing.  With classes, studying, getting to know old friends and the whole freshman class, getting organized, filling out questionnaires . . . sometime I take time out to comb my hair!  Sarah Darter Barnes is having a get together party tonight, there's a foreign study banquet, I've got a badminton class, German is difficult.  Flo and Francis had me out to dinner Monday.  Mike called me long distance from San Fran so he is still speaking to me.  Dick and I are doing fine.  Bob Foncannon got married last Saturday.  Don't forget my address is 147 MT.

Love, Catherine

1980 Roberta's anniversary card to Mom & Dad -Apr.1

Hi!  Talked to Serena on Saturday -- glad she does call & bring me up to date -- on her & rest of family.  She had already talked to you & Catherine & Carol.  Serena told me the disappointing news -- that Miss Wendy still can't say my name -- I'm beginning to have my doubts -- how she will do in medical school!

Just got done w/supper -- had pork chops done out on the grill -- really having nice warm days now!  Thanks goodness those cold days are over -- when it got down in the 60's -- & the freezing 50's.  By June we'll be able to cook outside -- maybe even w/out the grill -- just solar heat!

A new woman has been hired to work out in East Mesa -- she is 61 years old & lives about a mile from the center.  Her name is Grace -- and I think she will be good.  Her father who is 94 years old is very active at a senior center in Utah.  I bet she is Mormon.  She will start on Monday.  Also on Monday the driver is to be interviewed & chosen.  I'll be a little bored when the driver finally gets hired & started!!

I'll be thinking about you all a little more than usual on April 3rd -- & will try to call once Mary Virginia gets home from her hospital stay.  Did she use the word "GROSS" w/ Dr. Hale this time?

Will John & Carol be spending Easter in New Vienna?  I hope John let Grandma eat on the trip home?!!

Saturday we took Agnes "downtown" Mesa for Maxwell Street days -- it was a busy day in town -- not the usual no-crowd day.

OH!  A big 6 theater place is being built across from Fiesta Mall -- just West of it.  The Montgomery Wards store is to open up April 12th -- Lots of building going on all around!

Love,
Roberta

1980 Uncle Bill's Retirement Letter -Mar.27

March 27, 1980

To: All My Clientele

This is to announce that my retirement plans have now been finalized.  For the record I actually reached the age of retirement more than a year ago and have found this decision a very difficult one to make.  Arrangements for my retirement have been made with the utmost thought in mind of you, my clientele, which I shall attempt to explain.

Upon retirement (effective March 31, 1980) Charles W. (Chuck) Johnson will be transferring from the Dean Witter Reynolds branch office in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to assume responsibility for servicing my accounts.  This is, of course, in each individual case subject to your approval.

It should be made known, however, that this arrangement was consummated as a result of my efforts and with the support and cooperation of the firm.  Chuck, age 40, grew up in the Lake Worth Community, so actually he is coming back home.  He is a graduate of Lake Worth High School, attended Palm Beach Junior College, and has his Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees from Florida State University.  He served as Assistant to the Chancellor and Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga Campus, before joining a competitor brokerage firm in the year 1976, later transferring to Dean Witter Reynolds.

I have known Chuck for more than 25 years and look upon him as a person with high values and ability, dependability in his chosen profession and character above reproach.  I do not hesitate to recommend him to you.

My association with the brokerage of Dean Witter Reynolds has been a rewarding one and it has been a pleasure serving your investment needs.  I trust that many lasting friendships have been formed.

Should you have any questions about your account, and wish to meet with Chuck and myself, please do not hesitate to contact us, as I shall make myself available for this purpose.  My telephone number at home is (305) 582-6402.

With best personal regards, I remain

Sincerely,

William A. Horton
Account Executive

1980 Family Letter -Mar.26

Wednesday ---
26 March 1980
Dearest Family --

Spring may be here according to the calendar but doesn't look or feel too warm outside (or inside) yet.  There's to be a high of 40º.  Today is the day Mary Virginia and the band take off for Washington having to meet at the school by 5:30 PM to get to Chillicothe to take the Amtrak.  They will be staying at a Howard Johnsons in Wheaton, MD.  The jazz band is to play tomorrow morning so hope that the train isn't too far off schedule for they hope to drop off their luggage on the way from the train.  They will be busy the whole time and have a good bit planned -- don't envy the chaperones keeping up with them.  We offered to go if they really needed chaperones but evidently they had enough.  There are quite a few parents and boosters just going at the same time but not actually on the train with them like the Wendell Mahanes, Harold Thornburgs, David Haines and others.  The Bill Wolfes are driving a truck with the uniforms & instruments.  They are leaving after school today which I sure don't envy their ride.  The Tolles and Cindy and Mike Daye had planned to go originally but Arlene's father is very critically ill with cancer in Florida so they won't be going.

Appreciated all the letters this past week and hope all went through with the closing for you Morgans yesterday.  Hope all got straightened out on the check -- would like to see a picture of your new place.  Roberta, your pink envelope arrived Monday postmarked top and bottom on both front and back (4 times) and enjoyed the clippings too.  And yesterday the second letter arrived -- both very interesting about your work and activities -- hope you enjoy your aerobic class and do hope that you take golf lessons eventually too.  Frank Waters was promoting this for a long time.

Glad that John and Carol were able to go down after Grandma and hope that the weather is nice for them the few days they are there.  Wish we could have gone too but just didn't work out for this year.  Anxious to see all you come in Saturday (day before Easter).  Wish that more of the family could come too -- especially Serena since she is the closest but guess she has a couple of friends coming in but if they change their minds don't hesitate to come on home for we'd love to have you.

Our square dancing has slowed down considerably but it isn't because we haven't had the chance to go for there is at least one party a week where the Clinton County raids (tries to get banner).  There were two last week plus the club's own dance.  We did go to a special catch-up practice Sunday evening and plan to go to the workshop tomorrow night.

Appreciated those Spanish cartoon-lessons from the Miami Herald, Mother Uible -- plan to take them tonight to show the teacher.  He's a young fellow from Lynchburg who used to teach Spanish and is dong a good job if we can just absorb it as quick as he tries to teach it.  There are so many different personalities in the class and the first night we gave our personal reasons for taking it.  One of the women in there turns everyone off for she thinks she is as good as the teacher who puts her down every once in awhile almost with clapping from the others.  This woman hopes to go to Brownsville, TX and open a business of some sort, she says.  She told Dad on one occasion that she is a gourmet cook.  They have decided to offer the class for another seven weeks and most of us are interested and think it should soak in better.

We wondered why we had a call to Tempe on our phone bill last month and decided that you must have a Tempe number -- too bad that you can't transfer your calls without added charge, Roberta.  Last month we also had a call someone made to Greenfield -- it's never too expensive but adds up and I'm sure is a nuisance to the phone company.

Just can't believe that Uncle Bill Horton is no longer actively associated with the stock brokerage but nice of him to help the other fellow get started so is easing off gradually.  I am sure you all enjoyed Marianne and the boys but it would be different when they all had left.  She got to have a nice visit.

Really enjoyed talking to Wendy on the phone the other Friday and wish we could be closer to see the changes.  The phone company has a good ad about Grandma getting to talk baby talk as long as she want on the early morning calls.

How do you like the new envelopes?  Thought you might appreciate them more than those old ones from Wells that we still have many of but sure aren't my favorites.

Cheryl Cook Ray had a brain tumor and passed away last week leaving three children -- a real attractive 8th grade girl and one in 4th and a boy in 2nd. Her husband had died several years ago so guess Rita and Wayne Davidson plan to raise her sister's children.  Cheryl was only 33.

Roberta the menu you sent from the Senior Center at East Mesa sounds real good and hope that it continues as well -- do you get to eat the same thing as part of the fringe benefits?  Sorry that you have had so many problems with the contractors and finishing up projects like grass, doors, etc.  Which course do you plan to finish later -- you didn't say?  Mabel Collier fell and has been in the hospital -- they can't or hadn't decided whether she had a hair line fracture in the same leg she injured before but hopefully she was to get home yesterday and would have to use a walker for 6 weeks if not just slightly injured.  We invited Elroyd and Ruth in Saturday evening but he wouldn't come.  Afterwards we took Ruth to Wilmington and we stopped to see Mrs. Matthews and Mr. McCoy at Extended Care and then picked up Ruth after visiting with Ernest Wilson and Mabel briefly.

Just got in for lunch and see that the "better half" has covered all the news, for we certainly hear enough political and economic news without going into that.

Mary Virginia and a friend spent one Saturday morning over at the laundry mat bldg in Wilmington cleaning things up, as they did not renew the lease because of poor business, which is another story.  I'm planning on selling it, but now is a poor time for the banks, etc. for the banks have no money to loan.  In fact after paying all these taxes I sometimes wonder about the effort when the government takes such a big bite, but seriously there are so many things to be thankful for.

Norman and Donna Brown have bought a mobile home in Leesburg, FL -- guess they have been down twice this winter.

[Love, etc.]

1980 Roberta's Letter -Mar.24

[3/24/80]
Thursday AM --
Dear Family,

Hi!  I'm "sitting" in the county cafeteria -- waiting for the center van -- it's just over here for a scheduled maintenance check-up!  Had to have it over here by 7:00 AM & it shouldn't take more than an hour and a half -- so I'll be back to the center in good time.  (hopefully)

Next Monday they will be doing the interviewing for the drivers job.  25 people applied -- but they have already done initial screening.  Several older people applied -- over 65 years old -- including some of the people that came to the center.  I'll sure be glad when I won't be driving!!

Had a letter from Grandma -- sounds like she has had quite a time changing/cancelling her plane ticket.  Glad that John & Carol will be going down & bringing her back.  Just hope John stops once or twice on the way back to eat --

Harry, the owner of the flower shop where I delivered flowers this last Christmas called me up this week.  I'm going to deliver flowers the Saturday before Easter.  Also plan to help him few days before Mother's Day.  He said how he tried & tried to get a hold of me before Valentine's Day -- but no luck.  I'm just as glad -- since we moved the 12th of February!  This time if I'm sent out to East Mesa -- I'll know my way around lots better.

Marion won't be delivering -- since her sister & family will be here.  I'm glad to be able to work -- will "excuse" me from an all-day shopping trip -- plus with the house a few extra dollars isn't going to hurt!!

Speaking of money -- I lost my check-book last Friday.  Had just been to the bank -- to deposit check -- etc.  Then we went straight over to the theater to get into the 5:30 show -- $1.50 each -- instead of the usual $3.50.  I jumped out of the car & my bag was open -- so some things dropped -- thought I got everything -- but guess the check book got away.  Looked everywhere for it -- but no luck.

Monday went into the bank to get them to put a "hold" on the remaining checks (only 5) in my check-book.  The bank says they will no longer do that -- but instead have to close my Acct -- then open up a new one.

I didn't really want to do it that way -- esp. because they would not guarantee that checks I had written on the 1st Acct -- would automatically go & be paid out of my new checking Acct.  That the computer would reject checks written on the 1st Acct -- but that those checks would have to be "hand-found" off the computer list to be paid out of the 2nd Acct.  I had about 5 or 6 checks still out -- so I'm sure hoping they will be "hand-found" & paid.

I've got big news to tell you all about my bike.  I sold it to Dorothy Stubbs -- she had been thinking about buying one like it -- mostly to use back & forth to school -- where she works.

I had been playing around w/ the idea of having a bigger bike -- one that I could get around in a little quicker.  Marion seemed to think she should get a car -- so I could use the truck.  But I really didn't want to use -- or rather have the truck out to work -- because the few times I've had it out there -- it's a constant thing for the people to ask me to take them to the store, Dr.'s, post office, etc.  And I'm not wanting to start a personal taxi service!!

So -- to make a long story short -- bought a 125 cc VESPA SCOOTER.  It's Royal Blue -- really pretty.  Its top speed is about 58-60.  It's supposed to get about 90 miles to the gallon -- but the 1st tank got 70 mpg.  The tank holds 2½ gallons.

It has a small glove compartment -- plus back rest & combination book rack.  I miss having the use of the big baskets that the red bike had.

Talked to Dorothy last night -- she really likes her new bike -- guess it has made a "big hit" at school -- and she says she is saving lots of $ on gas -- instead of having to drive their pick-up w/camper on it.

Now Marion really likes the Vespa -- she would buy one right away for herself -- but they don't come in yellow -- so she is still thinking about it!!

For the price & the savings in gas -- sure beats a second car!  Plus the 2 bikes together take up alot less room in the garage than a 2nd car!!

Dad -- you will like the Vespa -- & Mom -- you can ride on the back!  The weather in June will be just right for a ride -- won't even have to wear a sweater!!

Meant to say earlier -- we saw the movie -- "Chapter Two" -- we had seen the play in NYC the last summer at the farm -- remember, Mary Virginia?

I'm anxious to hear more about Mary's trip to Washington D.C. -- the car got a vacation too!  Mary -- you really have a busy schedule -- w/ your hospital visit coming right up.  By the time I wee you -- you will be all healed -- just when are you coming to Mesa next?  What have you heard about All-state Choir?  I didn't know about it when I was in school -- or I would have tried out.  (Ho, Hum . . . .)

OK -- Van is getting washed now -- so won't be long now -- it's just past 9:00 AM -- can tell now it's going to be a long day!  Next Thursday I'm getting off earlier -- about 1:00 PM -- that will be nice --

OK -- gotta go --

Love,
Roberta

1980 Catherine's Letter -Mar.24

Monday, March 24, 1980
Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  It was nice talking to you Friday morning, Mother.  What time do you have to leave for your Bible study or whatever activity it is on Friday?

We had a real nice day Saturday.  It was sunny with the temperature around 60º.  Gerry played golf in the morning while I made about 16 dozen cookies and then went for a bike ride.  Then in the afternoon we both played golf.  I bettered my previous best score of 79 with a 78 so that made me feel good.  That is still about twice as many strokes as par but it shows improvement over my last spring's scores of 120's.  At least I have a good time and probably as I get better (hopefully I still have room for improvement) I will have an even better time.

As far as we know the closing on the house is still to be tomorrow.  We have to call the Title Co. today to confirm that it is all set up.  Then she is to vacate the house by April 10 and we will have to move between the 10th and 15th.  Gerry has to work that Saturday but perhaps we can either do most of the moving on Sunday or he can trade off with someone else in order to get that Saturday off.

Chambers hasn't found anyone else yet to become manager.  They have had two applications so far (the ad has been in the paper for two weeks) and they aren't happy with either one.  They offered us an additional $75/month if we would stay.  We said thanks but no thanks.  I am considering being their local representative though and keeping tabs on the new manager.

Nothing is new on the library board situation.  I talked to Barbara (the present librarian) on Friday and she said they haven't had a meeting since she first talked to me and I guess it is at the next meeting that she is going to propose my name.  That sure would be an in for me.

Meanwhile the position of "statistician" is open in the assessor's office.  I asked if they would consider me for the job and was informed that they had never had a woman in that job before.  They are looking for someone with real estate experience and someone who will get their appraiser's license or whatever so they can help the other appraisers when it gets busy.  Anyway, they are considering me while they continue to look for someone with the experience.  The thing in my favor is that they don't pay very much so most men are not interested in the job.  I figure about the only thing I can do in the mean time is to do the best I can with what I am doing now.  Not that I mind the job I have now but it would nicer to move up and to make more money.

Well, I have a few things I need to do yet to get Wendy ready to go to school as she calls it and to get off to work myself.  We have been walking on the days that she goes to "school".  It is about eight blocks and takes her about 15 minutes.  Then I have another three blocks to the Court House.  On the days she goes to the babysitters we have to drive or ride the bike as it is about 1½ miles.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy
