Dearest Family --

It's back to the routine again after a wonderful vacation with Roberta in Arizona.  We had a delightful time both in Mesa and Payson seeing their new homes and meeting their friends and co-workers.  Their new place at 707 N. 61st Place (85205) is in a real quiet neighborhood with many families of quails and rabbits inhabiting the cactus bushes in the back yard and they seem almost tame.  The house is so attractive, they have been busy painting and its all a pretty yellow on the inside -- all their own work.  I especially enjoyed the patio in the back where there always seemed to be a cool breeze.  The weather was warm but not too much so.  We didn't realize how much cooler it was at Payson though where the cabin is near (about 2½ hours from Mesa and 17 miles beyond the town of Payson).  The change in scenery is fantastic with the tall pines -- a beautiful setting for their cabin in a secluded area, the road gate only accessible to those with a key to the 60 cottages on about 360 acres.

We were honored to be their first guests on their first overnight stay at the cabin.  (In fact they had only moved into their east Mesa home a few days before.)  We hadn't given them time to get settled but they were amazingly well unpacked and seemed like they had been there for a long time.  Even Buffie seemed very much at home in both places.  Except for the leaving of the family back home, I would have loved to have stayed longer just to relax and enjoy the whole surroundings there.

Mary Virginia and Mie Young got along fine while we were gone and had things in good shape both inside and out in spite of all the rain we had missed while we were gone -- can't say I really missed the rain but it had come at least every other day they say with 2 inches in one 36 hour period.

Friday, the day after we got back was the last day for the students and John, Carol and Piper came down to help celebrate the occasion and pick some strawberries which have just really begun to come in profusion.  We made home-made ice cream Sunday afternoon (vanilla and banana) to eat with the fresh berries.  Invited the Wises (twins have gone to their grandmother's) and Tim Larrick.  The Rankins dropped in (to practice with MV for the Sunday evening singspiration at the church) so luckily we had made two gallons.

The rest of the family really took advantage of the tennis courts last weekend as many others have been doing.  They are finally finished and are being put to good use.  Mie Young seems to really enjoy the game.  Even Grandma went down to watch Sunday afternoon and though cool it was sunny.  Piper seemed to enjoy just watching outside the fence happy to be within sight of Carol and John.

Yesterday was the first day of Daily Vacation Bible School and had 66 there not counting the 22 teachers and helpers.  It turned really cool and damp in the afternoon and I enjoyed the fire in the fireplace lasat night.

We were sorry that we didn't get to see the Hortons again when we returned but guess that they enjoyed the NV alumni dinner-dance -- one of the main reasons for their coming at this time.  We did buy a plate commemorating the 100th anniversary of the school.  There was an article in the paper last night about the couple from Sabina who left the county school $600,000 for scholships and also 300,000 for the East Clinton Library.  The man had started Mac Tool in Sabina and they had no family of their own and neither had finished high school.

Today is election day in NV -- a special levy to vote upon for the Village and very little news about that.

Serena, your letter was SUCH A PLEASANT SURPRISE -- sorry that I wakened you Saturday morning.  I meant to ask you about the two pairs of sandals and red sweater that you left -- do you want them sent to you?  We got to talk to all of you in a 48 hour time span.  Sorry we missed you, Roberta.

[Love, etc.]
