Honeymoon card #4 - Back home

CJ and Gladys' honeymoon is over and they have returned to Westboro, sending a card in the 10am mail to Hillsboro to say they'll be there on the 4:00 train in the afternoon.  Nothing too exciting, but still always glad to hear from relatives.

Hortons 50th Wedding Anniversary

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [HH to Elderhostel in Athens OH, Jean & Wendy to Elderhostel in Townsend TN]

Wednesday 1990 - [Dayton to home] Got to the Knights Inn in Vandalia [Dayton airport] early early in the AM, the van that met us said "Thrifty Car Rental,"  finally got together.  Bob Walker came at 10:30 for us, had lunch at Wendy's.  Garden salad 99¢.

Saturday 1992 - Cleared along Rt. 73 at Wells, especially in front of the block building – 8 wheelbarrow loads, also the intersection.  The Hortons open house [for their 50th Anniversary] was from 2-4.  Walter Nichols* music group played.  They had a lot of pictures on the walls, even Mother and Dad's portraits.  Mother was in rare shape and did great.  Gary Cooper took lots of pictures.  Don Williams was there with a video camera.  Took GHU back to Hillsboro at 5:30, then the supper was at 6.  Angela had rented plates, etc.  Ham loaf, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad, cake and ice cream.  About 36 at dinner.  Broke up about 8PM and they all came to our house.  Carol and John Mueler are both deaf, but carry on a great conversations.  Their daughter is at O.U. in chemistry.  David and Cindy Uible had a 420 Mercedes.  He sells computers to Swiss banks.  Cindy hit it off with Joe and she bought $700+ of paintings.  It was midnight when we got to bed.  [This reminds those of us old enough to remember of Grandma & Granddad's 50th Anniversary in 1962 when John wanted to keep the door "open" for the open house.  The HH family left a few days later for a five-week trip west.]

*HH adds in 2010: On the Hortons do recall Wil Horton and how he was so much of a pain to Walter Nichols (he was MUH' age and they grew up together in Westboro and he later became Supt of Co. Schools) in his playing the instrument.

Sunday 1993 - Father's Day at Sunday School, got a pair of white socks for having the largest size shoe - 13.  Jean hit a home run on the solitaire computer game.  Bill and Mary were here for lunch.  Bill loves the ham loaf.

Tuesday 1995 - [Elderhostel Marine Expeditions program through 6/27]

Thursday 1996 - [Elderhostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Friday 1997 - Larry Lyons (89) passed away.  Started his law practice in 1934.  Big (?) news about the tobacco settlement.

Sunday 1999 - We had invited Bob and Mary Flick to church.  They live at 22 Rice Dr and have been in town about 5 years.  Jean had Ezekiel 3 for SS lesson.  We got back to SS just as they were handing out cookies to the fathers.  Mrs. Flick is quite a talker.  Met John, Julie and Kate at City Park in Chillicothe, nice spot.  Kate does a great job of bike riding without training wheels.  Got gas in Greenfield for 95.9¢.

Bush is on the campaign trail.  Final day of VBS.

Honeymoon card #2 - Rolling Chairs on the Boardwalk

The WPA book on New Jersey, published in 1939, says that Atlantic City is a "super-resort" crowded with "honeymooners, teachers, elderly retired couples, vacationing white collar workers, ministers, businessmen and their families."
Rolling Chairs on the Boardwalk.  Atlantic City, NJ postcard c1910
Atlantic City Boardwalk postcard sent June 17, 1912 by Gladys Hiestand Uible while on her honeymoon, to her father Mr. Ira F. Hiestand.

Mon. afternoon [June 17, 1912]
We have had an ideal day today in Atlantic City.  We are enjoying our visit at the beach very much.  We spent this morning sitting along the beach on the sand and watching the waves come and go.  People hire these chairs for 50¢ an hour so they don't have to walk.  --G.H.U.

Would you guess that CJ and GHU did not hire a chair, and saved their money for more oyster stew instead?

Saturday 1990 -  [Turkey]

Sunday 1991 - Father's Day at church, our youngest Dad was 53 – David Henderson and Keith Rankin, we sure have lost a generation.  Oldest was Ernie Cochran at 80.  Filled out ElderHostel application for MoRanch.  Went for a bike ride via Phillips Rd. before breakfast.  Light rain.

Tuesday 1992 - Hospital in Hamilton called us "How is Serena?"  First we had heard.

Wednesday 1993 - We took the Roby's to Murphin Ridge for supper.  Stopped at shoe store en route and the bakery on Rt. 32 coming home, both at closing time (5pm and 8pm).  Back via Mad River Rd. from New Market Rd.  The Hottles and the Petries at the Restaurant, they are gong to the Athens UMC.

Sunday 1996 - [ElderHostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Monday 1997 - [Newark to home] Left Newark about 8:30, walked around Dawes Arboretum, nice sun dial where you stand on different squares for each month to find the time.  Came down through Somerset [OH], then had lunch at Shaw's in Lancaster, Mobil Tour 3 stars, which seemed overrated.  Then to Chillicothe for Finch title work, then up Rt. 35 – they are working on last stretch of 4-lane between there and WCH.  The Ashcrafts 40th anniversary is coming up and the children are getting them 2 bikes.

Tuesday 1998 - Bob Terrell's dog case in Wilmington, pre-trial but wound it up.  UMW meting at Kilpatrick's, she had clipping that house was built in 1918.  Esther Salisbury gave us cherries.

Wednesday 1999 - When the Morgans called on their regular Wed. AM call, Gerry told us he was going to "retire" from Best West and do things around the house.  Think he had been there 9 years.  Went to Mt. Olive church for their annual church dinner.  We were there at 5:30 and that was the height of the crowd.  Walked around the cemetery, noticed that Lettie Kibler was buried in 1973.

Bernards 50th Wedding Anniversary

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Thursday 1989 - Delta has added a non-stop flight to Frankfurt as well as London.  Picked strawberries, the first peas, also first cherries at Mother's.  Johnsons returned from Lakeside (and their new motor home).  Planted squash in garden.  Went to Columbus, had no luck in finding "dead beat".  Met John for supper, he brought Steve and Mark with him.  Bought G'ma a floor lamp for her bedside.

Friday 1990 - [Turkey]

Saturday 1991 - Frank Shaw of Wilmington spoke at our UMC Men's Group on their missionary trip to Ghana this spring.  MV and Don arrived about 12:30am.  They're here for wedding in Dayton.  Donald and Martha Ann Bernard's 50th wedding anniversary.   BBQ at their house from 4-6, beautiful setting in their yard.  Even had the clothes they were married in.  Went on sightseeing tour with the Hortons including driving into new part of Snow Hill.

Tuesday 1999 - Serena arrived about noon.  Oh what a truck full and her car was also packed.  Really filled up the front part of our garage.  Glad she had bought that "Dollie".  Tim B..... stopped by and helped, especially with the washer and dryer.

Honeymoon card #1 - Oyster stew

Gladys and CJ were married on Monday, June 10, 1912 and arrived in Atlantic City on Friday afternoon.  We can assume they took the train from Hillsboro (or Westboro) to Washington D.C. where they had time to buy this postcard before changing trains for Atlantic City.  No mention of any sightseeing in D.C. but depending on when they left Ohio, they might have had a day or two there.

Fri. evening.  [June 14]
We will be at the Tracy Hotel until we start for home.  We arrived in Atlantic City at noon and have a room at the Tracy Hotel.  I saw the ocean for the first time.  The ocean breeze is real cool.  We are now ready to start to supper.  We are thinking about ordering an oyster stew.  Be sure and not work to much.  -–G.H.U.

There is currently no Tracy Hotel listed in Atlantic City although there is a "Divine Tracy Hotel" listed in Philadelphia.

Banana Split Festival

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Wednesday 1989 -  Jean and I went to Hillsboro on legal business – she "loves" (ha ha) to check titles.  Left at 5pm, we were going to eat at Muggy but after looking at the menu changed our minds.  Ate at Dockside 6.  Light meals were $9.95, salad bar $1.95 extra.  Still building multi-tier parking garage $1 first 30 minutes, then 75¢ for each additional 30 minutes.

Thursday 1990 - [Turkey]

Friday 1991 - Old building in Wilmington all torn down for the site of the new city building.

Sunday 1992 - Because of rain Community church services at the Church of Christ.  Sid Clay preached on: "What's in a name"?  The Bell Choir played and the Butlers sang.

Monday 1993 - Hortons leave for Lancaster PA for [Robert Kintner's] HS graduation,  We went out to see John Hughes, his face appears bloated, but very interesting to talk with.  Hard to get GHU to eat, but she loves the strawberries.  Busy day at the office.  Getting ready for 1994 prices.

Tuesday 1994 - After a stop in Wilmington we had lunch at Chester Road House, most specials were $8.95.  Then to Dr. Hoffman office for a hearing test, we both have some hearing loss but not serious.  Had some certification today at Montgomery Library.  So we went to a nearby library.  Met the Sankers at the Echo Restaurant in Hyde Park.  Entrees $5.95.  Made a brief stop at the new Joseph Beth Bookstore, has been open 6 months.  Bought Colorado book.

Wednesday 1995 - [Elderhostel Marine Expeditions  program through 6/27]

Friday 1996 - [Elderhostel program to Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, returning 6/22]

Saturday 1997 - Banana split festival in Wilmington.  I had volunteered to work for 2 hours at the Pepsi Booth for Leadership Clinton, auction for medical building in NV – no bids.  Ken Weller all excited about his 18 speed bike, he can now do 3 miles.  Tom Young brought a limb mulcher, a 5hp, takes up to ½" stuff.  Called MUH, said Lorraine Marco [?] Basco [?] was at the same complex.

Monday 1999 - Took car to body shop on SR-247 in Hillsboro, GG brought me back.  Had a call from Serena about 7:30am, she was getting ready to leave Asheville.  Then a call about 6pm that she was in Clinton TN and would spend the night there.  We went on a walk around Steele Ct, across the tracks and got a lot of trash.  Pastor Mike's Dad operated on today.  Our Bible School opened.  Had our first broccoli out of the garden.

Summer 1936-37 Anderson's Restaurant, Clarksburg WV

Taking the non-freeway route would have been the only option available in 1936-37 to travel from New Cumberland south to the Jackson's Mill camp.  According to Google Maps, traveling south through Wheeling and then on to Clarksburg would take 3 hours and 16 minutes today to drive the 126 miles.  Then another 20 miles on US-19 to reach Jackson's Mill after lunch at West Virginia's largest restaurant, Anderson's.

Where we ate on our way to Jackson's Mills 1936 & 1937.
Jane & Rowena Herron drove the girls down and Rev. McDevitt the boys.

There is currently no restaurant in Clarksburg named Anderson's.

Mission Camp, Bethany WV c1938

Speculative history leads me to believe that Jean went to Bethany WV for a summer mission camp after the two years at Jackson's Mill in Weston WV.  Bethany is much closer to New Cumberland, being about 30 miles south via WV-2 and WV-67 and now that Jean is in high school the time on a college campus may have helped her narrow her college choices.  Since we have the option of looking into her future we know she chose to go to college in Morgantown at WVU.

Bethany College WV postcard c1938 from Jean to Rev. McDevitt (appears not to have been mailed)

Dear Rev. McDevitt*,
Jane and I are having a very good time but we do miss you this year.  Rev. Inglis is here and he's a scream.  Will see you Sunday we hope.  –Jean

*Note: Mom told me it was spelled McDevitt, but pronounced McDivitt.  I am unable to confirm this.

*See the New Vienna Memory Blog for information about the 1938 bond issue election and pictures prior to, during, and after construction of the Municipal Building.

Summer 1936 - Upshur Cottage at Jackson's Mill, Weston WV

Mission Camp continues in 1936 and Jean found time to send another postcard home.  The summer of 1936 was also the time the Summer Olympics were held in Berlin Germany and generated quite a bit of debate.  It was also the middle of the Great Depression and one of the most severe heat waves in modern times hit North America with temperatures of 110 throughout the country.

Upshur Cottage, dedicated in 1923 at Jackson's Mill was constructed of stone with the idea that "it would be as solid as the 4-H ideals themselves."  The interior is divided into dormitory rooms.

Wells Mfg. History

The following was written in early 2000 by HH Uible and was originally transcribed by Serena.

Since 1947 Dad [CJ Uible] had become involved in a Wells Mfg. (started by George Wells in Dayton in 1945) and in which I was also active.  The first location in New Vienna is the present Senior Citizens building where the rent was $100 a month.

The original owners had several fast talkers in the organization who were paid a commission of sales and soon the company was broke.  They moved to Milwaukee and started a company called Jak Pak.

In 1949 Wells bought the old hotel at the corner of SR-73 and Main Street for $900 as there had been a fire in the building and it needed help.  The going wage rate then was 55 cents an hour and I was lucky enough to get on the payroll at $35 a week.

In 1950 Bill Horton [CJ's son-in-law] and family moved to Florida and I became more active in sales work.  At that time Wells did not make anything, they bought the jackstones, the balls and put the items together.  Then a small set retailed for 5¢.  The only sales organization was a rep from Barr Rubber in Sandusky from whom we bought the balls.  He carried the Wells line and through contacts eventually had reps in most of the areas.

Every year we would got to the Toy Show in New York City which then ran for ten days and is now (in 2000] down to three days.  In the early 1950s hotels in NYC were $4/night and we would eat hot dogs from street vendors.  Every year we would make the rounds of the major chains in New York and then swing out through Kansas, Oklahoma City, Dallas and back through Nashville to home, a two week trip.  As we all know the little guys have gone out of business and the big guys are so powerful they tell you what they will pay, so was quite happy to sell the business in 1999.

In those days we had to punch the holes out of the jack cards where the balls went.  The only material handling equipment was a two wheel truck, so when a 40,000 pound load of zinc came in, that had to be unloaded one bar at a time.  (Each bar was 20 pounds.  We bought the zinc from a firm in Chicago that had apartments in the John Hancock Tower and we all enjoyed a number of visits there.  Catherine had an intern job at Marshall Fields while in college.)

Some of the earlier Wells products included lawn sprinklers -- they were too good as they never wore out; key chains and coin holders (with the advent of parking meters); bond boxes where one kept valuable papers (really no more than a metal box about the size of a small safety deposit box); yo-yos, flying saucers where there were two balls on the end of a rubber string and when in motion the balls would go in opposite directions; cyclone spinners -- a plastic disc that had holes and when pulled by the two strings would make a noise.  Later on we made plastic bats and balls.

About 1960 we got into the bubble business and eventually had a complete packaging line consisting of a bottle unscrambler (which put the correct end of the bottle up), a filler, capper, labeler, etc.  The 8 oz. was the most popular seller and it would sell by the truckload.  Also had a 4, 16, 24, 32 and 64 oz. bottle size, all of which we made on the four blow molding machines.

Our biggest step was to start making rubber balls, and as Goodyear said it was a challenge, which we never fully mastered 100%.  Besides the rubber mill, there was an extruder to get the rubber into rope like shape and then a cutter for the slugs and finally the 21 presses where the actual balls of different sizes were made.

Over the years we had employment as high as 70 people and a lot of very loyal people, like Phyllis J. Tilton White who was there for 35 years, Donna Brown for 33 years, Esther Salisbury for 20+, Mildred Storer, Gene Williams and Fred Hughes who came for a couple of weeks and stayed for over 20 years.  Elvis Wiget who started at $2/hour and went up.  In 1999 the basic wage rate was $6.50/hour.  Not much but too much to make a profit at the selling price that competition required.

In selling jacks one of the customers suggested that we put information about obtaining the rules on the back of the card, which we did.  At the peak of business we would receive around 50 letters a day requesting the rules.  Mother [Gladys Hiestand Uible] seemed to enjoy answering these jack letters, especially after CJ's death [1969] and would mark in the atlas book where the requests came from.  Children were requested to send a dime to cover the cost which was adequate in the early days when postage was two cents.  Sometimes children would send 10 pennies which resulted in postage being due.

As it became increasingly hard to make a profit, even though I drew no salary, I announced in the spring of 1999 that we would close.  Easier said than done for I really didn't want to have an auction.  Thanks to John and his connections the business and property was sold to Grant and Glenn Douglas of Columbus who formally bought Wells in November of 1999.  Hopefully they will make a success of it.
