1981 Family Letter -Feb.8

Feb. 8, 1981

Dear Family:

Our intentions are good in getting the "weekly" filler going, as next weekend will find us going to Washington on Friday and back from NY on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday the three commissioners rode down with our Sheriff to Lebanon to view their jail, as a possibility of housing the Clinton County prisoners.  Our jail does not meet the state standards, while the Warren Co. jail being about 5 years old has all the required things . . . like outdoor recreation and a host of other things that one can't believe without seeing.   Warren  Co. has one of five grants in the country for their records office as the records are all on tape and one can do a preliminary title examination on a real estate lot in a matter of moments rather than hours.

This has been a big week for square dancing . . . Thursday night is the regular night, then yesterday we went up with the Harners to Dayton Mall, where our local radio station was sponsoring a farm and home show and in turn had asked our Clinton Co. Squares to have a dance for entertainment in the afternoon.  It was amazing to us the people that gathered to watch the goings on.  We did a little looking around in the stores, had a good dinner and then drove over to Xenia, where there was to be a raid by our club -- there were probably 35 people there form our area and 150 in all.  Yes, we are staying home today.

Catherine, glad that your library job is shaping up.  Miamisburg is opening a new library and they had contests to encourage people to take more books out, so the staff would not have to move books form the old to the new one.  Serena, your philosophy course sounds "deep" for us, tho it is an area that all of us could stand more depth.

Johnson Clothing has a sign on the window "Close out Sale", Bill Holmes has been the spark plug for the place for 60 (?) years.  How is the clothing store doing in LW, Mother?  Roberta we have been trying to come up with a good time to visit you, and also when is a good time for you?  Perhaps some of us, including Serena and/or Roberta could get together in New Orleans as we plan to be there form August 7 to 12th for the ABA meeting.

John, did you and Carol read in the January Denison magazine about the new Pres. of Bank of America, a '61 grad of Denison, who started with the bank, a year later went to Stanford for an MBA.  Opportunity is out there for all of us if we want to get involved.

Hope the Hortons are making plans to come to NV for at least the weekend of May 22nd, for this will be the BIG year for the class of '31.  Joe Morton stopped in the office last week, he is looking great.  Eliz. Johnson's sister spoke to us in the mall yesterday, we are poor politicians, for can never think of people's names until TOO late.

[Love, etc.]
