1978 Catherine's Letter -April 17

Tues. AM, April 18, 1978
Dear Mom, Dad, and Mary Virginia,

Hi!  We went to Pic & Save while we were in San Diego so I have some new stationery.  We had a good trip but kind of tiring with all that driving in a weekend.  DeeDee had her birthday party at Farrell's on Sunday afternoon and then we headed back to Gilroy.  DeeDee's mother called us last night and said DeeDee had broken out with chicken pox yesterday.  I'm glad she wasn't sick while we were there (although she did complain of chills) but who knows how many were exposed.  We took interstate 5 south this time and it is 60 miles shorter as well as being much faster since it is all freeway.  There weren't too many motels but McDonald's & Burger Kings are fairly well spaced out so the traveler won't starve to death.

Wendy and I are making good use of the bicycle and looking forward to Daylight Savings time so Gerry will be able to ride with us in the evening.  We went to the bicycle shop yesterday to see about getting a basket but they only had one rather small size so I think we'll order one through Sears.  We took the route described in the newspaper article last week and I can agree with what the article says.  We went the direction that he recommends but as I recall you folks took the Sunset route.

It was good to see Hal & Cindy again.  Hal may take a job as parts manager for IH in Anaheim.  They aren't too thrilled about living there but it would be a better job for him.  We also went to see Frank & Elma who have just bought a house and were having an open house on Saturday.  It's a real nice place with three bedrooms, two baths.  She says they feel lost in it as the apartment they were in was a small one bedroom.  They don't have much furniture which makes the place look even bigger.

It looks like DeeDee will be coming up for the summer around July 1st.  She may come up for a weekend sometime in May though.  We offered to bring her bicycle up for her or her Barbie camper.  She doesn't want the bike though and she can't part that long from her camper which seems to be one of her prize possessions.

I haven't heard from Roberta for quite awhile.  I have a picture to send to her but I haven't gotten a letter written to send along with it.  The days seem to go by without my getting everything done.  I owe John a letter so I ought to write to him too.

I splurged and bought that book I liked so much "Infants & Mothers."  While I was at the bookstore I also got "The First Twelve Months of Life" & "Toddlers & Parents" which is by the same author as the Infants book and goes up to 30 months.  They are interesting to look at and compare other baby's progress to Wendy's.  Everybody tells us how quiet she is and she is still very well behaved when we take her out.  She can sit up unsupported now for a few minutes at a time.  She can reach for things in front of her but if she reaches out to the side she loses her balance and falls over.  She still hasn't mastered moving forward and she gets very frustrated when something is a few inches in front of her as rolling over doesn't bring it any closer.

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy
