1990 MUH Letter -June 5

Monday -- June 4th [1990] [mailed to Turkey]

Dear HH and Jean:

Here goes a TRY at typing you a ltr on this weird typewriter . . . it has a heavy touch and makes a lot of noise.  I'm not sure what the different gadgets' are supposed to do?  I'm still wondering if there is a way to lighten up the touch?  It seems so heavy!

We got your first postcard from Pittsburgh.  THANKS!  I imagine the mails are questionable and difficult to find a post office?  When the earthquake hit some where over there, everyone was wondering if any tremors were felt in Turkey?  Sat. nite a tornado struck Harrison, Ohio and more damage done in Indiana.  8 dead, 150 injured.  Two-thirds of the town of Petersburg was destroyed by twisters.  Hundreds were left homeless just two weeks after floods knocked out the town's fresh water supply.  150 homes were destroyed and 120 were damaged when a twister ripped a 5-mile-long path.  Warnings were on TV all evening for the Tri-state area. 

I went to bed around 12 and the fire siren went off once . . . it blew and blew then after a min. or two it started off again.  I found out later that it means a tornado might hit.  I understand some people took refuge in the school house.  I slept peacefully on, not knowing the significance of the noise . . . I thought it was just another bad accident!!!  Should we save the Cincinnati Enquirer???

Mother is doing fine!!  What an appetite!!!  I cooked green beans, canned sweet potatoes and fried (over-fried) steak.  She could even chew the meat . . . better than I could.  Ha!  This house is like an on-going soap opera.  Each 'Aid' has a different sob story to tell.  Kathie says everyone is doing better at their job since I came on the scene!!  I can't get anything done in the way of typing letters . . . not enough privacy . . . a lot of yak-yak!!!  As Roberta said, for me, this has been a "Jot", if you know what that means?  Ha!!!  Guess!!  We've found that she likes the recliner chair . . . seems like it takes off the pressure on her "rear" a good change from her chair.  She hasn't asked about you all except the day after you left when she said, "I'll miss HH & Jean."  She seems more aware of things, and more responsive. 

Sunday was a "WINNER"!!!  Took Mother to S.S. . . only Mrs. Thornburg and Vivian Cochran.  Ev Johnson was sick, no teacher so they just talked.  I understand E.J. has had several attacks of vomiting, etc.  I think going to the hospital for some tests.  I went downstairs to move her.  S.S. room was shut off as they had it decorated in a Hawaiian theme for Bible School.  I peeked in and it was very decorative . . . a lot of preparation.  Mother said she wanted to go home. 

All day was a 'scenario' . . . Having someone here to put her on the pottie.  Gi-Gi and Bob volunteered their time from 11 to 3 o'clock.  Kathie wanted off to go to her in-laws for dinner.  She tried to get a substitute Sat. and called Gi-Gi, she tried but no one available so Kathie said she would stay Sunday.  But GG volunteered and insisted that she go.  Bob was of great help . . . I thought we could take Mother and go out and eat but Bob went back and forth to the farm as he and sons were trying to catch up . . . a race with the weather.  In the PM they had some parties to go to.  GG was a lot of help . . . wherever needed.  They are a NEAT COUPLE!! 

BIG SURPRISE was seeing SERENA briefly on Sat. and Sun.  She was very attractively dressed, both days.  She liked the library.  Stayed at your house Sat. nite and came in here Sun. AM at 8:30.  She wore a neat red suit.  Roberta called me last nite and I understand she was optimistic re her interview.  Then Sun noon MV called from home and while the pot pies were baking they called on us.  They had driven up Sun. AM and Don preached at Russelville.  GUESS WHAT they brought a plastic bag with a note inside - - - belongings in drawer in Room 37.  (I had left more than I thought.)  Ha!  My faith in human nature restored!!  Ha!

I picked 4 boxes of strawberries and Phyllis brought me two.  It's to go to 44º tonight The record is 43º.  Hope you are enjoying your trip . . . but I will be glad when you are back!!  We're enjoying activities at Sr. Citizens.  Bill and Elsie Z invited us over for dinner last Tues. with GG and Bob.  FUN!  Played Euchre and Bill Z has an attractive Pool Room in their house.  "Delish" DINNER!  The weather here is mostly rain and starting this wk, quite COOL.  Feels like Florida's WINTER.

Also Helen Carr and Wib popped in here for a min. on way to eat in Wilmington.  HOPE LTR ARRIVES!!!

1980 Catherine's Letter -June 3

Tuesday, June 3, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary Virginia,

Hi!  I have forgotten when you said you were leaving for Arizona but hope you get this before you take off.  How was your trip to Chicago?  Did you eat at any new restaurants?

Our weekend was rather quiet.  We went on a picnic Sunday after church. It was the first day of summer services -- no Sunday School and church services at 9:30.  There was a coffee hour after church and we were still home by around 11:00.  So we packed up our lunch and went to Monty Campground which is 17 miles due west of Madras but to get there you have to go about 40 miles 25 of which are very rough dirt road.  It's a beautiful place right on the Metolius River.  We did a little hiking but didn't stay too long as the temperature was around 50º so not real hot.  It was doubly interesting though because on our way home from Suttle Lake we had stopped at Camp Sherman and seen the head of the Metolius River.  It comes right out of the hill and about 100 feet further on is a full size river.  They don't think it is springs but rather an underground river which flows from somewhere deep inside the Cascades.  Well worth seeing in any case.  Maybe we can include it on your tour agenda this summer.

Today is the last day of school here so of course all the students are excited about that, the teachers too!  There are also several things going on this week.  The Day Care Center is having a pot luck supper on Thursday.  The children are going to perform so that should be fun to watch.  Wendy was just "promoted" into the next group from Toddler 1's to Toddler 2's.  Then the next class is the 3 year olds.  They go more by their development than by actual ages.  Toddler 2's can go to the bathroom by themselves, take off their shoes follow directions better, etc.  Starting next week Wendy will be going to the neighbor's on Monday and Tuesday (this week she went just on Monday), the other babysitter on Wednesday & Thursday's and the Day Care Center on Friday.  Wendy is now helping me type so that is why this may look a little strange.  Anyway this new arrangement will save us a little money as the Day Care Center costs $1.25/hour while I'm paying the neighbor $8/day and the other babysitter $9/day.  Also when Wendy goes to the neighbors she comes home during our lunch hour which gives us a chance to see her during the day.  We're not sure yet how we are going to work it while DeeDee is here.  I imagine Wendy will still be spending at least most of the days at the babysitters.  DeeDee's idea of babysitting is sitting in front of the TV and that's not what we want for Wendy to do all day.

Also on Thursday of this week is the last UMW meeting before summer.  It is a potluck picnic at noon so I'll probably go during my lunch hour.  Friday we leave for the marriage encounter.  Registration is at the Inn of the 7th Mountain between 7:30 & 8:30 and we are about 1½ hour away so that should work out all right.  It lasts until 6:30 Sunday evening so it will be a full weekend.  Sunday evening the Episcopal church in Bend puts on a pot luck dinner for the participants and Doug & Susie will come to that and bring Wendy.  We have been talking about her spending the weekend with them and she is all excited about staying with Gabe.  I don't think there will be any problems although it will be the first time she has been away from us over night.

1990 Roberta's Letter -June 2

June 2, 1990 [mailed to Turkey]

Dear Folks,

Hope the travellers are doing quite well and enjoying all the experiences!  I called New Vienna and talked with both Cathy and Aunt Mary at some length and happy to report that all is going great there!  I told Cathy I would pay her way out to Arizona this winter to visit when Grandma is here!!  She might take me up on that!  At this time it looks like I will be able to come the first part of July.  With Sid leaving here for Colorado to meet Cynthia there on the 14 of July, I would need to be back before then.

Just got Mary Virginia's dresses ironed and into the second hand store.  If they sell the first 30 days will make more money for her!  When I called Grandma's this AM they said that Serena had just been in for a nice visit before going to Greenville for the day.

Tomorrow is the going away banquet for the minister at First Methodist -- at the Pointe in the ballroom.  Sid and I made out reservations and paid for them but now with him gone to Sara's I have asked Wendy Jean.  So she is in quite a tither as to what good outfit she shall wear.  She is willing to visit a former resident who is now in a nursing home near there.  Gwen Cleal the 95-year-old -- possible stroke.  We are hopeful that she will be able to come back.  We will save the room for a month or so.

We do have a new man moving in soon.  His wife just died of 66 years.  I take it she was the healthier one.  He isn't sure about being able to fix his breakfast.  He has no other family or friends.  Also have two sisters -- one 94 and one 92 that are considering moving in.  The older one is the healthier one.  In fact, she is still driving, tho not much.  The younger sister who is in her 80's is here from California quite anxious to get her two sisters situated.  Younger sister also want me to tell 94-year-old that she would have to give up car when she moves in.

Sid called last night 11 PM his time.  He had just gotten done working for the day at Sara's.  Said he would have to work many long days to get all done that Sara is hoping to get done.  He had started his work yesterday at 6 AM!!!  Today he was going to start to reroof her garage.  And it is a huge garage! I hope he is able to take off the day of graduation!

Schuller is in bad need of money in order to keep the TV ministry.  So many good causes!   Did I tell you that we hired a new activity director -- Gloria Carpenter -- who is very active in Trinity Bible.  Did teach physical education and health but now only wants to work part-time.  She is recruiting many new volunteers and seems to have all kinds of contacts.  Has found a swimming pool for the residents to use this summer.  Also is able to get free printing through Honeywell Bull.  That's a real plus!

Went out for a bike ride this AM.  Have done just over 100 miles on the bike this last week.  I did take my first bike down to the bike shop to see what they would give me for it the Biachi, was told a grand total of $100.  For that I will keep it.

Will be anxious to hear about your trip.  For now I need to figure out how to get this from the screen on our typewriter to the paper.

Baby Beethoven is doing OK now -- He was very upset when the suitcases were being packed.  He might have been confused when Sid left (instead of me!)

I've been spending quality time w/ Baby Beethoven.

1980 Roberta's Letter -June 1

June 1, 1980

Dear Family,

Hi!  Thanks for your recent letter -- seems like it was esp. full of news -- you all are sure getting around!!

Called up a few places today (9) -- asking about Rent-a-car -- found Greyhound to be the best deal -- $69 per week for compact -- w/unlimited mileage -- but now they require you to either buy a $3.25 a day insurance or show proof of your own insurance policy plus $125 deposit down.  Also unless you have major credit card is $200 additional $ down.  (both to be refunded)

Marion is now enjoying her summer holidays -- has all kinds of stuff she wants to get done this coming week -- will be interesting to see how much does get done!!  She was out at 11:00 am Friday so came out to the center -- helped me w/ all my end of month data that has to be added -- also met alot of the seniors & they enjoyed that!!  She plans to come out this Tuesday -- as having CPR (modified) & heimlich (sp?) demo -- put on by fire dept.

   -- now Monday AM -- just got done taking & passing both the chauf & motorcycle tests for license renewal -- since they both expired on 14th May -- time that I took the tests!  Now over at ASU -- going thru Registration process -- it's a mess -- getting the signatures -- that form -- etc.

OH!  the folk dancing class I wanted to take was full -- so I signed up for beginning yoga -- that meets on Mondays -- 5:30-6:30 -- in the Tempe Comm. building just beside the Tempe Library.

We've really been having the company in for dinner -- Saturday night had the Stubbs (minus Rick Stubbs -- who was camping) & Sally & Connie.  Last night had the Modelezes.  Rene & Murial are getting ready to go to Puerto Rico for a week's combo business/pleasure.  We've been using the grill & eating outside -- it's 90 out & at night I get too cold to be outside -- w/out a sweatshirt!

I called up Prescott Motel 6 -- Reserved 2 rooms -- for 19th -- I'll be staying there w/ Anne Hamilton -- who you'll meet -- when here.  She works for the county -- & does nutrition & consumer ed. at our center.

Seems lines are now getting started -- will continue later . . . .

Enroute to Istanbul now but because someone checked luggage & changed mind about flying with us from New York we missed our flight from London to Istanbul for had to find her luggage.

Interesting group and your g'dad & I went into London on subway for 4 hours.  Saw Harrod's well.  Ask Roberta for more info on that wonderful store -- better than Bloomingdales!

Dear Mother & Dad,

Thanks for the letter and your itinerary.  Hope your trip is going well.  How's the food?

Today is the first day of our summer reading program so it will be busy at work for the next few weeks (or months)!  Our first big program is Monday -- 2 performances by Ronald McDonald.

Wendy's last day of school is tomorrow and the first day of 7th grade will be Aug. 27th.

It's been relatively cool here -- 90's -- but I guess it's supposed to ge back up in the 100's soon.

Gerry's doing fine.  His job seems to be gong really well.

We joined U.S. Swim & Fitness health club at 59th & Peoria so we've been getting more exercise and Wendy loves the swimming.

Dear Uncle John,

How are you?  I'm fine.  How is life in Newark, Ohio?  How is Julie?  Tell her I say hi.  Do you watch the Simpsons?  I got a Bart Simpson shirt it says Don't Have a Cow Man!  Keep that in mind.  Thank you for the rose.

My parents and I joined U.S. Swim and Fitness a health club.  Ever heard of it.  I only have 2½ more days of school and then I'm free for three months.

Well I have nothing else to say.

Dear Grandma & Grandpa,

How are you?  I'm fine.  I hope you had fun in Turkey.  Today Mom had a conference with Mrs. Fosnight my teacher.  They went over my Iowa test scores.  My highest score was in spelling I'm on the 9th grade level.  My second highest score was in reading I'm on 8th grade level.

Only 2½ more days of school for me but by the time you read this letter I will definitely be out of school.  Tell Jeanette Laymon that I enjoyed seeing her too and I'm sorry that I can't make it this summer.  Well, I have to go now.

1980 Family Letter -May 27

May 27, 1980

Dearest Family --

The Hortons plus three Kintners arrived about 3:30 yesterday afternoon a bit earlier than predicted.  Larry was going to leave from Akron airport for his reserve duty but decided against coming to Ohio at all for the reunion with the Horton clan and all.  Dad said that they had a full car (Mares' Volare wagon) as he saw them when they got in.  We both went down after supper but didn't get to see Robert Reed as he had already gone to bed -- really tired after being without a nap and up late for three straight days.  Sorry, we did see Robert Reed but it was William Wesley the younger boy -- I continually confuse their names for some reason.  Robert is real sweet and so tall and blond -- he will start to school this fall -- to morning kindergarten, Mares hopes as he is an early riser.  Bill seems to be enjoying his retirement and they have many things planned.  They are going to spend three weeks with Cris in July going over to Junaluska part of the time.  When Joe comes to New York for his Artists League two week course -- they and the Kintners are planning to meet him one of the weekends he's there.  The Democratic national convention meets there the same time; they hope to work around that though.  Before I forget, they (Kintner three plus Hortons) stopped to see John and Carol in Newark but didn't find them home which they would have known if they had called us before hand or them.  Originally they planned to come through around the first of June so we thought they probably would be home but at least they saw 194 Church Street and the bank too.

We had a nice trip to Cleveland for the OBA leaving here Thursday AM stopping for an errand in Columbus and got to Cleveland soon after lunch.  Dad went on to his meetings and I went out to see a former librarian under whom I had worked in East Cleveland.  That evening we went to dinner with a group and then to see Bob Hope in a theater in the round.  He was very good and unbelievable energy for one just about to celebrate his 77th birthday.

The next morning Dad went to breakfast with his alumni from Western Reserve and happened to meet a man from Granville who just happened to be on the board of Park National -- his name was Morrow and his wife had gone to Western Reserve Library School a few years (about 12) before I did.  I had lunch with another former librarian and then met Dad for the annual dinner and dance.  This year marked the 100th anniversary of the OBA so it was a special celebration.

Saturday morning we drove out Euclid Avenue to the area where we used to live but it really has changed in the last 30 years and was depressing.  The main intersection of 105th and Euclid which had been a nice shopping area was the biggest shock -- three empty corners and the fourth boarded-up buildings.  The other shops left in the area were covered with chains to keep out loiterers, etc.  We went on to Columbus and had lunch at a Mexican chain of which we had heard much but never lucky enough to find one open -- Chi-Chi's and we highly recommend it if you like Mexican food.  I didn't want to eat too much for Saturday evening was the New Vienna Alumni Banquet and knew we would be having another big meal.

This was the 99th alumni and though a good many had turned up from out of town it was the smallest group any of us could remember.  Next year is Aunt Mary's 50th so hope she will make plans to attend.  They hope to make it a special celebration.  1963 was the last class to graduate from New Vienna so it doesn't build at all.

Yesterday (Decoration or Memorial Day) Mary Virginia marched with the band at New Vienna and Lees Creek and she played the tuba -- the biggest instrument in the marching band.  She and Jimmy Butler (who has played it for some time) were swinging them back and forth and she found it REALLY heavy.  There was a swimming party afterwards at Kincaids and then she had ball practice with the church's softball team.  (Their first game is this Wed. night with the Clinton Co. Bank girls team.)  So she had a full day -- also helped G'ma sweep and get ready for the Horton invasion.

Looking forward to seeing Serena this Friday evening -- guess we are going in spite of the Hortons being here -- they plan to stay til sometime next week -- depending on how G'ma and the boys hold out.  Larry has plans to fly back June 6th.

Anxious to hear the effect of Mt. St. Helens in your area, Catherine, and do hope there was no damage there.  Elizabeth Johnson called this morning to say that she had gotten a card from you and how happy she was to receive it with your new address.  At that time you had written that it had gone north of you but wondered about the last eruption.  Also hope that you had a good weekend combining work and pleasure at the Methodist Camp near Sisters.  Thanks for the information about it.

It was good to talk to Roberta last Thursday night and looking forward to seeing her too soon.  Do be careful on the motorcycle.  You were very lucky not to have been hurt anymore than you were.  We got a real cute card from Marion when we got back from Cleveland and appreciated that.  We had wanted her to keep some of the money we had sent for a birthday present for herself but evidently she spent it on a skirt for you Roberta so don't know how we can make it up to her. 

Mary Virginia helped look after the boys this morning while Mares and her dad went golfing.  Wes had slept 14 hours lasts night and so is getting caught up on his sleep but the others imagine would still like to nap.  I stopped briefly on way back from our semi-annual trip to dentist.  MV had taken the boys on tour of the shop for which we thought they were plenty young especially without their parents but they were happy to have some balls to play with from there.

Garnet Fisher's husband passed away last Thursday -- he had had cancer and had been suffering so it was a blessing.  She lost her father just two months ago.  The Fishers and her parents have been living In Wilmington in a house which they had fixed up so pretty in town.  They have lived so many different places.

MV is practicing her music (piano) now as she has a lesson tomorrow morning.  She takes from the Methodist District Superintendent's wife so she will be gone next week to conference.  MV has given up voice lessons for the summer and also is not giving any piano lessons to Elwood Earnhart's daughter during the summer.

Dave Martin has retired and it seems odd to see him at home during the daytime.  I hardly ever see Doris out though she and her grandson were riding bicycles one day.  Brian I think will be five in August.  He had training wheels on his bike.

They have been working on the tennis courts and have a blackcoat on the leveled field and parking area so they are beginning to take some shape.  Hope that they are used enough to really make them worthwhile.  A pool would be wonderful but would take much moe care and be very expensive to install as well as maintain.

I finally got the patio cleaned and was working on the garage this AM when Dad got home and reminded us of our dental appointment so must get back to it but kind of out of the mood.  We are having the group up for hamburgers tonight.  Would have liked to have steaks but Grandma and Aunt Mary and the boys no doubt would find hamburgers more to their liking.  Our beef supply is really getting low -- it is so expensive in the store now -- have been eating much more fish, chicken and pork.

We plan to be in Chicago from Friday evening to Monday or Tuesday as Dad plans to make some calls and they (Imperial Smelting) have said we could have the apartment in the John Hancock building until Tuesday noon.  It is very close to where Serena works in the Loyola library (one near the Water Tower).  There is another campus -- the main one quite close to where she lives.

Sorry that the Hortons missed seeing you all -- especially John and Carol when they went out of their way to stop but perhaps on their way back -- sometime between June 2 and 5th or 6th -- no doubt the earlier as Larry is due home the 6th.

We do look forward to hearing from you all and always seems like a long time between letters and calls.  Our visit in Newark is like a dream now, but really enjoyed it.

1980 Roberta's Letter -May 26

Memorial Day

May 26, 1980

7:00 A.M.

Dear Family,

These three day weekends are sure nice . . . but find myself saying . . . still not enough time!!!!  We are having such delightful weather -- considering the time of year and the state of Arizona.  Didn't even get up to 80 yesterday!!!!  We had talked about the idea of going North for the weekend with the Stubbs camping, but decided just to stay here and enjoy the cool breezes . . . and try to get some things done.  Also I've started working for Harry at the flower shop now every Saturday, delivering flowers.  I enjoy doing it -- and have no trouble spending the extra "mad money."

It was good to talk to you all . . . I'm just sorry this Prescott thing came up -- or rather the timing on it.  It's called "senior summit" and the governor and a bunch of other people will be there.  I'm trying to get two people from East Mesa to go -- also trying to get donations to help pay for their trip.  It will cost them $25 dollars for everything -- which is pretty reasonable.

I seem to be in-between things this week.  My last aerobics class was on Thursday.  I still had trouble doing some of the routines . . . my bike fall did not help me out on that account.  But even before the fall I had trouble just keeping up with some of the songs.  I've bought the record so you all will have to hear it while you are here . . . and of course join in on some of the routines.

Also my class at ASU is now completely over.  I went over Thursday afternoon to get my project back, but somehow missed the prof., so now I'm hoping that I still came out pretty good.  I register for 1st session summer school June 2nd. . . plan now just to take one class -- and it will be an independent study deal.  Otherwise the classes meet for three hours every night -- Monday thru Thursday -- and I just do not want to go that route.  The summer sessions are just five weeks long.  This Wednesday I go over and talk to Dr. Greey about what I want to do in the independent study.

I'm signed up for "country swing" classes that will be held at the senior center in town.  They will be every Tuesday -- starting next Tuesday -- June 3rd -- for 8 weeks.  I'm trying to keep up with my "swinging" parents -- ho, hum.  I just hope that I can keep up with the hour that the class meets -- 9 to 10 P.M. at night!!!  Country Swing seems to be the new craze out here -- and I'd like to get it started at the senior center.  They say its something like a "chicken" movement.  Also you don't need a partner for it -- so would be good at the senior center.

Also I'm planning on signing up through Tempe Parks and Recreation for folk dancing -- a girl from my aerobics class is going to take it also.  We had talked about taking aerobics again -- then we both decided we would rather try something new.  Both of these classes cost $5.00 each -- for the 8 weeks of classes.  Pretty reasonable -- especially when you compare to how much these studios are charging.

My congrats (can't spell it out) to Mary Virginia for getting the honor of Ohio Youth Choir.  Where will you be living this summer during your time at the state fair???  Sounds to me like you will be gone lots this summer!!!!  Hope you are able to keep your Mesa trip still on your agenda!!!  Thanks for your last tape -- also your birthday -- or rather my birthday card that you sent.  Both Marion and I got a big laugh out of it!!!!

We had the bad misfortune of having our garage broken into . . . or should reword that since it did happen when we had the garage door up.  We had been in the habit of keeping the garage door open at night -- in an attempt to try to cool the place down -- as in the heat -- the garage was sure getting hot.  Yesterday Marion went to get the tool box -- which is (or was) right on the shelf near the door -- and it was missing along with several other small tool type things.  I could hardly carry that tool box -- so I don't think it could have just been a kid.  We will contact the insurance people tomorrow -- but I'm wondering the policy -- since the house or garage was not really broken into.

Did you all see the movie on TV the other night -- Erma Bombeck's "The Grass is Greener Over the Septic Tank."  We watched it and thought that it was really good.  Also watched part of the movie last night called "Boy from Left Field" -- had the little black boy -- Gary Coleman in it -- was very good.

We went over to the "twilight show" ($1.50) and saw "Coal Miner's Daughter" -- story of Loretta Lynn.  First movie I had seen -- except the TV variety for some time.  Enjoyed it -- the girl that plays Loretta sure did a good job.

The swimming pool is now open here -- hopefully I'll be able to get in at least a short swim today.  We still have no neighbors to our right.  Slowly things are getting done inside the house -- as far as what the builder is to do.  Most of them are small -- but important -- like the shower door now slides -- instead of us having to lift it to move it.

I'm wondering what I did with some of those diet recipe books -- cookbooks that I had.  There is a lady out at the senior center that would really enjoy seeing them -- if you could find them and bring them out with you.

Mother, you will like the new yellow skirt that Marion got me for my birthday -- out of your money.  I already had a nice blouse to go with it -- so makes for a nice outfit.  Just a week or so ago I bought -- with the money Grandma sent me -- another skirt and blouse outfit.  My next purchase will be a spring blouse to go with the blue pants suit I bought in Dayton before John's wedding.

Thanks for both the articles in the paper -- noticed on the back side of the one where there had been the services for Mr. McCoy.  How is Mrs. McCoy?

Now Monday night.  Today we had Agnes taken on Dial-a-ride to the new mall and then spent about three hours there.  Ate at the restaurant in The Broadway --first time there -- and it was very good.  Open kitchen type of thing.  Marion had carrot cake -- was $1.50 per serving -- but the size of the portion was very generous.

Agnes loves to go to the Pet store and look at all the dogs.  Then between the two of them -- Marion and Agnes they always manage to get at least two or more dogs out and play with them for awhile.

Time for me to be getting to bed . . . hope that you all had a good trip to Cleveland.  And will have a good trip to Chicago . . . Won't be long till you will be out here -- wish I could promise you some of this good weather that we've been having.

Memorial Day

Monday Evening

Dear Grandma,

Hi! Thought today about all the Memorial Day parades that I watched from your front steps . . . and wondered if there were a parade today in New Vienna.  Out here didn't seem to have much in that line, stores were open, and just seemed like another shopping day!!!

According to my calculations (thanks to letters from both you and Aunt Mary) seems like the Hortons will be in New Vienna now.  I'm glad that they are enjoying Uncle Bill's retirement . . . sounds like they have a summer full of plans lined up!!!

And speaking of summer plans!!!!  Let me hit you up with some ideas that I've had.

Since the folks and also Mary Virginia are planning on coming out here I have pretty much decided not to make the trip back to Ohio this summer.  Now, I was wondering if you might be interested in coming out to Arizona -- possibly the last part of September or during October.  Spending a few days here -- then going on to Oregon to visit Catherine and that smart niece of mine.  Wendy Jean can now say Roberta -- etc.  Now that we are on one floor it would be no problem for you to stay here.  Also I've already talked to Catherine about this plan and she thinks that its a great plan.  So what is your thinking????

Grandma, thanks again for the birthday money.  I bought a red skirt and blouse with the money.  It's really a sharp outfit -- if I say so myself.  This Friday at work we're promoting wearing RED, WHITE, AND BLUE -- so I'll be right in style.  The blouse is red and white.  It goes with my two other skirts -- so I can wear it alot.  Also Marion has lots of blouses (which I wear) that go with the skirt -- so I can really mix and match both of them.

I'm not sure if you remember Debbie Fenner -- but she is a good friend of Vanessa's.  Debbie was married earlier this past month -- guess Vanessa was in the wedding -- and really dressed up.  I'm sorry I missed the occasion!!!!  Debbie was married in between bowling season and ball season.

Think I told you how we planted all these things in a two foot border around the back yard.  Thanks to Buffy walking and laying down all over the plants they were not growing so much.  Then about two weeks ago went out and bought and put up a small white fence all around the area.  Now that dog has learned to jump the fence -- so it seems we are back to where we started.  He's so funny about the back yard -- doesn't want to be back there, unless we are back there with him the whole time.

This is Marion's last week of classes.  So she has her work cut out for her this week . . . averaging grades, marking all the computer cards, etc.  She will be here one more week after this week and then head back to the Mid-west.

Past my bedtime . . . please let me know about how you think on the idea of coming out here and then going to Oregon.  As long as I plan ahead, I can get off either in September or October.  This is going to be my first summer in Arizona -- and my first summer to work for some time!!!!  Hope I can handle it.

Dearest Family --

This is just a note with our addresses for the next few weeks to let you know where we might be reached by mail (or phone) in case you wish to get some word to us.  You know that we are always most happy to hear from you.

Al is quiet here in New Vienna with more rain today -- farmers are having a long wait again for dry weather to plant their crops.

Tomorrow is a busy day -- we have promised Orville and Jo Harner to help them with their program for the Senior Citizen's program after the monthly pot-luck.  We don't usually go but if the weather is good plan to take G'ma.  Tomorrow evening is the annual Alumni Dinner Dance of the New Vienna school. 

John called and plans to be down Sunday and will take us to the airport Monday -- guess we'll probably go to the parade in New Vienna (scheduled for 9:30 or 10:00 AM.

We are staying with G'ma tonight and tomorrow night and hope that we have enough people line up while we are gone to look after her.  One is on a substitute basis -- Virginia Perkins -- Shirley's mother -- Mr. Perkins died a few months ago -- she works at the shop but said she'd be willing to help.  Cathi McIntosh is real good and so conscientious.  [This may be the Cathi that is the current mayor of New Vienna?]  Elaine has been filling in for some that have had problems of getting there because of their own health or their family's.

1980 Catherine's Letter -May23

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary Virginia,

Hi!  Sorry I couldn't talk to you this morning, Mother, but hope you had a good trip to Cleveland if I have my weekends straight.

My new job is going real well.  It is alot more challenging and I am learning alot.  Whether or not I will be getting an increase in salary is still being discussed between my boss and the "judge" who runs the County Court.  If they have reached a decision I haven't been informed yet.

It is now Monday evening so you can see I didn't get this letter finished before the weekend.  We had a good time at work camp leaving here after Gerry got off work Saturday.  We stopped at our favorite pizza place for supper in Sisters and then got to Suttle Lake about 7:30. 

The camp has a main lodge with dining room, rec room & dormitories as well as about 20 cabins.  We stayed in a cabin (each of which has a heater as it gets below freezing there practically every night).  It wasn't as luxurious as our accommodations at the Coast (the Jackman's cabin) but still was a step above (and alot warmer than) our tent. 

There were several children there that Wendy knew from church so she had a good time.  Gerry and I cleaned the ovens on Sunday and this morning we helped paint the laundry room so felt like we contributed our fair share of work for the cause.  We may go back some weekend this summer to paint the cabins.

They are having a family camp on the 4th of July weekend but Gerry has to work on the 5th (Saturday) and no-one will want to work that Saturday for him.  Plus the annual church & friends picnic is on the 4th and we really enjoyed that last year so hope to go again this year.

Uncle Dorsey received a lot of postcards in this era, most advertisements such as this one.  Presumably he shared them with his younger sister, our grandmother, Gladys Hiestand Uible.

As a refresher to his place in the family:

• Dorsa D. Hiestand was born Dec. 31, 1876, died March 10, 1959.  He is the great-uncle of the Uible-Horton cousins.
• He was the third child of Ira Franklin (1851-1912) and Mary Ellen Fawley Hiestand (1853-1929).

Permanent organization to meet each year and they all decided to make it a bigger success next year by everyone promising to induce others to attend which was done.  (of course I'm not thinking of going alone next year.  Am I dear.  [Lucie & Nat were married on December 6, 1906])  and no doubt it will be an affair to be looked forward too in future years.

Yes indeed my dear girl am looking forward to your coming home this summer and hope you will have a pleasant and happy summer.  Everything is so grand here just now.  The trees just coming out and in bloom.  The roads are fine and if you were here we certainly would take a drive this fine afternoon.  McAteers have not got their Auto yet and Mrs. says she was only fooling about getting a one-seated one.  Am more than pleased to know it for have looked forward to some fine rides this summer.

Wrote you sometime ago that I expected to go to Chicago soon and would arrange to come back via Cincinnati.  Now Lucie cannot say just now if I can arrange it as yet however will let you know.  Yes it is hard to realize that you have been away 10 months.  How times does fly.  And then you will only get home and settled untill you will be going back (or wanting too) leave it.

Well my dearest there isn't much new to tell you and when you see the folks they will have time to tell you everything so I will leave you for this time so good bye and hope you have gotten to look like your self again and I'll receive my picture soon.

Dear Folks --

I've been carrying this paper in my purse for days thinking I would get this started! Hard to believe it was just a week ago that I was in New Vienna celebrating my birthday!  Tomorrow is a Caregiver's Conference at Glendale Comm. College -- Sr. village will have a table to pass out info & hopefully there will be a crowd (other than college students) to work for prospective residents.

Did listen to Weekend edition of Focus on the Family last night.  Didn't get to hear one of the daily programs during the week.  All sounded quite good -- I'm going to mail in my Am. Express card to Am. Express in pieces.

Anxious to hear about Mary Virginia's graduation - speaker - etc.  Hope you all did not have to drive in HEAVY RAIN!

Might give picture of G'ma & Kathi to Kathi -- think of you all often.  Wish we lived closer so I could help --

1980 Family Letter -May 19

Dearest Family --

We had a rainy weekend but enjoyed our visit with John and Carol.  Sorry that Mary Virginia couldn't go with us.  the MYF carwash was scheduled for Saturday but due to weather had to be cancelled but she felt like she had to study for tests and had errands to do for G'ma.  The Sankers did come yesterday but glad to not have prepared for them at noon for dinner as they didn't arrive til almost 2:30.  They had to go home after church and feed the dogs and give them a run, etc.  Mary Virginia ate on the run as graduation was at 1 PM and she had to be there at 12:30 to be in chorus and band.  She went to graduation parties at Leanne's and also Jimmy Butlers.

We got to John and Carol's too late to see little Brooke for whom Carol is babysitting but just in time as far as John getting home.  We went to a very good Chinese restaurant Saturday evening that was doing a big business.  We went back to their house, had dessert - real good pie that Carol had made, saw movies of their trip to Florida and good pie and then left about 9 PM so had a full day.

Both Catherine and Serena called Friday morning and always glad to hear the latest from them and got to talk to Wendy too.  Today we had a letter from Catherine and had one from Roberta on Saturday.  So sorry to hear about Roberta's accident on her cycle -- wonder if it might have been much worse if you hadn't had a windshield, Roberta.  Hope they weren't your new sandals that you ruined and no doubt you would be really sore for a few days.

Thanks for Wendy's latest drawing which you sent, Catherine and glad to read about the camp where you plan to go and help clean up over Memorial Day.  Sounds like a good combination of fun and work which is for a good cause too for the Methodists.

Mt. St. Helens has really been in the news.  Did you feel the tremor and/or see any of the ash from it?  Heard that as far as New England would see some of the effects and weather could be affected for years to come.

Was happy to hear about Serena's raise and know she can always make good use of it.  We are still planning on going to Chicago the end of May even though the Hortons maybe here then though I wish there wasn't that conflict.  Serena also mentioned that she had gone to church where David Hiestand is the  minister -- Rogers Park Methodist.  He thinks our families may be related.  She didn't mention that we had heard about him through the New Zealand Joe Hiestands.  At least the Hortons will be here to look after G'ma while we are gone.

Catherine writes that she is now officially the data Analyst for Jefferson County.  Basically she is concerned with the sale of properties and how the sale price relates to the assessed market value and the ratio studies involved in comparing the sale price with the assessed.  She fills out sales data cards on every transaction and sends letter to both the buyer and seller to confirm the sale price and gets other pertinent information.  She may also get into an appraiser's trainee program.

Aunt Mary's letter to G'ma today included a letter from Joe who is thinking about going to study art full time.  He is coming to NY to study for 2 weeks and if he likes it well enough will either stay or come back next year to Students Art League.  He has two weeks vacation during the Moslem Ramadan holidays in August.  He has been living overseas ten years now and he's getting a little tired of it and feels he is losing touch with America -- needs to get recharged.  He wonders what everyone's reaction to Carter's ridiculous blunder in Iran is.  Anyway he wants to see if he would like painting and drawing enough in order to drop his job and study art full time.

Aunt Mary also included a letter to the editor of the Statesville Record and Landmark that Cris had written and the paper had printed from which I will quote:

• "Ever since I graduated from college, I've been receiving once a year a letter from an uncle who I have never had the pleasure of meeting.  His name is Sam.  Like all members of our family, he is very special.  When I think of him, I think of the American flag.  However, lately he seems to have developed a problem in spending and handling money, which is becoming very taxing for the entire family.  As April 15th approaches, I find it very difficult to respond.  I have already given him 34% of my hard earned wages and still he cannot support the lifestyle to which he has grown accustomed.  He suggests I save my wages but penalizes me by retaining a portion of the interest I earned.  As an alternative, I invest in stocks, only to have my potential earnings and dividends subject to support further my uncle's life style.  The incentive to invest, considering the "outcome" and risk involved, is making me think twice.
• In an effort to help the situation, I'm working hard to get a better job.  Although this is futile too, for it seems lately the more I make the more my Uncle Sam wants.  It seems it just doesn't pay to work.
• Reading between the lines I feel my uncle doesn't like the idea of me being married either.  In fact, based on his last letter, he would give me money back if I was single.
• I would like to buy a new car (my present one is 8 years old and in dire need of repair) and a home for my family, but I refuse to go into debt!  I wish my uncle would give me "credit" for being financially responsible like he does when I conserve energy.  I wish someone would kindly tell my uncle to tear up HIS credit cards!  He needs to go on a strict financial diet, for I'm afraid if he doesn't my Uncle Sam is heading for a state of depression, a possible heart attack and a long road to a healthy recovery.

We have been over to the school at EC this evening to hear the final details of the student's trip to Mexico City, etc., which leaves three weeks from tomorrow for ten days.  There are 29 going.  It will be taking off with a bang for they leave from NV at 6 A.M. (5:30 at Lees Creek so at least we are on the right end.  M.V. went to bell practice this evening and they have their first game this Thursday.

The Hortons are leaving LW this Wednesday and expect to arrive here the first part of next week . . . believe they are taking Larry to the Akron-Canton airport, so they maybe coming down I-71, which would make Newark more out of the way.  Rob has a summer job with the LW Recreation Dept.  We couldn't believe the pictures of Rob's "souped up" car.  As Grandma says "that car is a thorn in matters among the family".

It was good talking to Roberta on her birthday even though the hour was late.  We had tried much earlier but no one answered so I was the only one up when I finally was able to get through.  Then two days later through Catherine's call I heard about a mention of an accident but Catherine didn't have any details.  

I had planned to clean the patio this morning (now Tuesday) but weather is not too cooperative and I'm not at all in the mood but things like that need to be done -- Hortons are coming and I entertain the United Methodist Women on June 10 -- same evening of day MV leaves for Mexico so will be a full one if I go to Cincinnati airport to see them off.  And then two days later Dad and I take off to see Roberta so really not much time left.  

In the meantime we ae looking forward to seeing Serena next weekend.  This week will be plenty full with going to the OBA in Cleveland Thursday returning Saturday for the annual (99th) New Vienna Alumni Banquet & Dance.

Thanks for making it possible for us to be at the wedding.  It was definitely a memorable event!

We made it home fine although Wendy got the flu early Monday morning and was sick to her stomach all day.  She still looks a little peaked today but is headed back to school.  She has a babysitting job tonight so she's determined to be better by then. 

Gerry and I are both getting caught up at work.

We'll talk to Roberta tonight and find out what's new in New Vienna since Sunday!  I think the AZ celebration of her birthday is planned for Thursday.

1980 Catherine's Letter -May 15

Dear Mother, Dad & Mary,

Hi!  I thought you might like to see this bit about Suttle Lake Camp where we are going Memorial Day weekend.  Gerry has to work on Saturday so we will be going down after he gets off work.  There are 3 or 4 other families going from Madras and people we've talked to who went in previous years say its lots of fun.  Since it doesn't cost anything it will certainly be a low cost weekend and a chance for us to see the camp.

This weekend we are going on a picnic Saturday afternoon with the Jackmans and one or two other families.  And after church Sunday is a fellowship dinner.  Someone is fixing spaghetti and I am to take a green salad.

It is now official that I am the "Data Analyst" for Jefferson County.  Someone from the Oregon Dept. of Revenue (Bend office) was here Tuesday and again today to get me properly trained.  Basically I am concerned with the sale of properties and how the sale price relates to the assessed market value and the ratio studies involved in comparing the sale price with the assessed.  I fill out sales data cards on every transaction and send letters to both the buyer & seller to confirm the sale price and get other pertinent information.  These are all subdivided by property class (first) and then appraisal area.  I'll send you some samples in my next letter.  So far I am doing this at the same base salary I was hired at to be a clerk.  I may also get into an appraiser's trainee program.  Also I will be going to an advanced District Data Analyst Training School in Bend -- July 15 to 18th.

1980 Family Letter -May 13

Dear Family:

Another routine week -- a busy one.

Wednesday night is our academic night -- the three hour course in espanol, as the kids would say, it is a "blast."  Virginia Walker sits right in front of us and with only nine in the class we all have to stay awake.  Virginia is leaving for Spain the last of this month to visit Nancy for a couple of weeks.

Thursday I went to Cincinnati for a real estate closing -- the banks around here are not making mortgage loans, but it seems the places in the cities have the money to loan out.  In the evening we went to the square dance work shop, i.e. learn new numbers, as in contrast to the dances, which are more of a dress up affair, refreshments, etc. etc.  This week the caller is coming from Newark, Ohio -- should we ask him, Carol and John if he has heard of the Park National Bank.  I'll put in another plug here for the Hortons to stop off and see you Newark folks coming or going from N.V.  Since we assume that both J & C will be working Saturday morning we will plan on arriving in Newark around noon.  That new restaurant sounds fine AND especially so with your company.

Friday, Maria (MV) was in a program at the High School Jazz Band Spring Show.  WOW, what volume, tho they seem to thrive on it.  She is hoping to get in the Ohio Youth Choir and being at the State Fair practicing for a week plus.  (J.B. do you have any advance info on the timing selection, thru your friend at the Bank).

Yesterday we made up for lost time, as we got some two inches of rain -- the first in over two weeks.  This really brightened up the garden.  We are especially looking forward to the strawberry patch.  This morning (now Wed - Roberta's birthday -- looking forward to reaching you by phone this evening), TV reports a tornado hit Kalamazoo but didn't recognize any of the familiar places -- looked bad.

Thanks for all the Mothers Day cards and calls --they were really appreciated.  MV fixed lunch or rather dinner for us Sunday which was a nice treat.  Grandma got the plant at church for being the oldest mother.  Connie Croghan (Kevin's wife) for the youngest and Elizabeth Ellen Carey for the most grandchildren (3) at church.  Many others have more but weren't there.

Phil Donahue's program this morning is on western square dancing and I wish I could tape it for Dad to see -- We do enjoy it but need more workshops or practice than actual dances which are alternating weeks.  But enjoy meeting new people at the dances so all have advantages.  Elaine Harner Biehl and Tom are back in the swing -- she has a good deal of weight to lose yet but dancing should help her as it did her father.

Today is the last Womans Club meeting of the year and we are having a luncheon at Georgialia Hannah's.  Her mother-in-law is still in the hospital and we thought it might be cancelled but guess she is still having it.  It is also a silent auction of handmade or white elephant articles.  Some just wanted to kick in a couple of dollars but then some thought this would be more fun so I hope to get some fresh rhubarb and asparagus plus bran muffins to take.

Just had a telephone call to see if I was watching the Donahue show.  Mrs. Thornburg had made a skirt for me so knew I'd be interested.  They say there are over 6 million square dancers throughout the world now and that it is the only recreation without competition.  They also incorporated a style show with it and one woman said that she had 20 outfits but turned out she dances 5 nights a week and is a caller as well.  I guess we are going off the deep end on dancing here tho.

We have checked with the school and there are no problems as far as they are concerned about having Mie Young Kim in school there but with Mary Virginia's schedule IF she is in the Ohio Youth Choir she will not be here the first week of school and with all the band practicing the first couple of months there are difficulties but all hopefully can be ironed out.  Mie Young does play the cello but don't know if she plays any other instrument so she might also be in the band.  Mary Virginia's closest friends are in the Reesville area so it would be hard for them to take over.

We're looking forward to going to Newark this weekend -- actually on Saturday only and MV has the MYF carwash so won't be able to go -- unless it should pour rain that day.  The Sankers are coming on Sunday.  We are invited to Lynn's wedding in Paramus, NJ.  There is a dinner the night before (Sat. July 12 and then ceremony at noon Sunday)  Our invitation included motel reservation, etc. so really haven't made up our mind but will have to by this weekend.  By the way the boy she is marrying is Jewish if you hadn't heard or guessed earlier.

As far I know we haven't changed our minds about going to Chicago to see Serena on the 30th of May - June 2 but hear the Hortons may come about that time.  We got our reservations last week before we knew of their coming early -- it is the smaller apartment in the John Hancock Building (where John and Nick stayed on a previous visit).  Wish we had the larger apartment but can't complain at the price -- free.

Wednesday lunch is now over, Gene Drake was in this A.M. telling us how he took a survey at the last Lions Club meeting, of the 29 there, 11 were retired, 9 were working in the teaching area and/or govt. employed and 9 were employed by private companies.  Food for thought.

1980 Roberta's Letter -May 12-14

Dear Family,

Hi!  So what did the New Vienna Uibles do on Mother's Day?  Did Mary Virginia cook -- or did you all eat out??

We both worked -- Saturday & Sunday -- it was a busy weekend for the flower shop.  Both days the shop was so full of customers -- hard to get the orders out the door to be delivered!!

One time I heard the saying that there were 2 classes of bike (motor) riders -- those who have had accidents & those who will have an accident.  Friday AM -- on my way to work -- about 1 block away -- in fact turning into the driveway of the center -- I skidded & went over -- on my side.  Ruined my hose -- a pair of new shoes & the windshield that I had put on the Thursday of the week before.  (story later on that!)

As for me -- I just skinned up my knee/arm -- right side.  I'm sore all over -- but then that's the worst in the morning -- the soreness really started Friday pm -- Saturday.  I'm glad I was able to work over the weekend -- kept me active -- & that's good.

I went over Saturday late afternoon to the health clinic at ASU -- saw a Dr's Asst. -- he said it was expected that I would be sore -- that I shocked my body -- etc. by the fall.  Did take off Friday -- really looked a mess -- arm/leg both bleeding -- plus dirt all over.  Had someone from work haul me home.  Stubbs went out after my bike later that day.  

About 2 weeks ago I just got it in my head to get a windshield  -- as the bug hitting my face really hurt.  So I had it put on May 1st.  Marion told me Friday that you all had sent her $ to get a windshield with.  So I will go ahead and have another put on -- and hope that it lasts much longer.

It's now Tuesday P.M.  I'm much better -- but still sore -- black and blue places on legs and some on the arm.

Thanks so much for your birthday card -- it came this afternoon.  Also one from Grandma and Ruth.  Serena called and it was good to talk to her.  Don't think I mentioned that Catherine called on Sunday.  Wendy Jean got on the phone and can now say Roberta and Happy Birthday.  Needless to say I was very impressed.

Tonight was that board meeting at the Church.  It was very disorganized . . . .  Took almost two hours for us to figure out nothing -- except that there would be no meeting until August.  Monday night I went to a banquet at the senior center honoring the Mealtime Asst. Program.  It was really good.  Both the dinner and the program.

Tomorrow night is my last class at ASU for this semester.  Actually everything was to be handed in last week -- so I'm not sure what all we will be doing then.  Sure hope I'm ready to do aerobics on Thursday.  Next week it will be over.

Friday -- last Friday -- was the Mother's Day party at work -- I missed it but the men carried it off in fine order.  Had alot of comments about how nice it was.  An 86 year old man sang the song "Mother Machree"-- spelling -- solo -- without music.  Guess it was quite good.  Anne -- my boss went out -- and made the announcement that I had had an accident -- she said some of the people started crying -- that she was sorry she had even mentioned it.

I picked up my bike Monday night.  Rode it out yesterday -- no problem . . . .

Need to be going . . . thanks again for the birthday card . . . and the 2nd windshield . . . .
