Jan. 16, 1989-99

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Monday 1989 - Heard from Joe Hiestand in NZ today, his wife has cancer.  Jean made a big crock of onion soup, she is a great wife in every respect.  Church Trustee meeting, voted to buy new stove for parsonage and for brighter lights in the church.

Wednesday 1991 - What a day -- Iraq invaded, claims from Strombecker about "magic wand" use, computer becoming obsolete.  Mother seems better, got call from CMH about her home care.  Oh yes a letter from Welfare about Joyce Grooms working.  Jean washed my brown top coat twice as it turned out there was lipstick in a coat pocket.

Sunday 1994 - MV called about Ginny going to the bathroom on her own.  Ed Johnson spoke on 1 Samuel 3  - Are you listening?  We ate at the NV Restaurant, had a $10 gift certificate.  Dinner is $4.95, entree and 2 vegetables.  Wilma went with us to see the movie "Mrs. Doubtfire" in which a couple splits up and then he gets a job as a nursemaid for the children under the guise of being an older lady.  Kroger is having a promotion with Delta, $100 purchase = $100 discount if ticket is over $498 or $50 discount if less.  It was 10 degrees this am.

Monday 1995 - [Newark to home] We got along fine babysitting Kate.  Lunch at Cracker Barrel.   Cris and Angela called.  They have decided not to come to Wells.  Paved new sidewalk on east side of 73.

Tuesday 1996 - [Phoenix] Drove up to Sedona, visited the chapel in the rocks and the shopping center with Spanish name [Tlaquepaque], had lunch thereat Rene's, not cheap but nice.  Beautiful library, Jean got some cloth books there.

Thursday 1997 - Jean had therapy at CMH and worked at noon at Senior Citizens.  Really cold wind.  Borrowed $ for Elsie S, oh the bank papers.

Friday 1998 - [MV, Ginny and Christian arrive] Another call to IRS re Zurface.  Mary Virginia, Ginny Christian & Mickey (she is 43 and has one daughter who is in Japan with her husband who is in the service) arrive.  Empathy for Don Waters grandson.  Barry Williams here re our electric deep freezer problems.  Also Nolan TV here.  Another long email from Sid.

Saturday 1999 - Morning breakfast at church, Kim Armentrout didn't show up so Pastor Mike spoke on Habitat.  Went to Wilmington PL, had quite a conversation with Rita Crandin [?], she really takes the books to Prairie View, etc.  She is going to NZ and Australia next month then to the NM school in October.  Ended up getting a Big Don at Donalds for $4.19.  Phil Dirt and the Dozers at the Murphy.

HH Diary 1989-1999

Sunday 1989 - Sharon King (works at bank) sang at church.  Since we were expecting Mary Virginia and Diane for lunch, we had plenty of food, so invited Bill Frankenberg for lunch, he now lives on Welcome Rd.  MC called again about us meeting them in Middleton, but not possible since we had company.  Went on 23 mile bike ride, out NV Road, Hixon Rd, Larrick Rd, Terrell Rd, Bernard Rd.  Average speed 12.5 mph.  Roberta called, possibility she is going to Washington DC 3/18 for 6 day meeting.  SS=46, Church=66, $331.37.

Monday 1990 - GG must have thought I looked bad, gave me 3 frozen White Castle hamburgers.  Serena gets out of the hospital.

Tuesday 1991 - Took Mother to CMH.  She has pneumonia, seems to be resting comfortably.  Roberta called about coming in two days.  The Hortons have standby reservations for 1/24.  Fatal accident at 28 and 134.  Jay Ewing came at 9:30.

Wednesday 1992 - Our first winter storm, not much snow but lots of wind.  Mother in good mood, would hardly recognize her writing.

Saturday 1994 - Another zero day.  Jean went to meeting in Hillsboro on stress by former missionary.  John called and said Kate was crawling all over their house.

Sunday 1995 - [to Newark]  The couple who had the music were sure overweight and the way they ate it was understandable.  The new UMC Conference office is going up on the grounds of the Worthington Childrens Home.  Went to Newark, Red Lobster for supper.  In the evening we all went to the Cherry Valley Lodge and helped put out program for the breakfast (that Julie is chairing) they are having for 300 people for this special school.

Monday 1996 - [Phoenix]

Thursday 1998 - Carolyn's 23rd year at Wells.

Friday 1999 - MV sent us email that Christian is walking, Ginny has a rash that develops at school.  Jr. Daye had operation for colon cancer.  Hilda Williams in for tests.  Mike Daye having problems with feeling in his hands.

Captioned: CJ and Catherine "And still they try to make me pose." 1/14/1950  Too bad it's not a better picture of Granddad, but gather I was not always cooperative. Another out of focus picture taken about the same time shows Mother struggling to hold me up in the snowsuit and pointed toward the camera at the same time. Dad wrote on the back "What a struggle for a poor picture."  This is taken on the front steps of Grandma and Granddad's house in New Vienna.

John Frier and Alox Manufacturing

John Frier (1895-1974) founded the Alox company in 1919 in St. Louis with money he earned from dabbling in railroad stocks while he was in the Navy during World War 1.  First product was shoelaces for which Frier got a patent for the aiglet, the metal crimping part.  In 1927 the company began making kites and expanded further into the toy market with jack sets, toy whips with a whistle on the end, jump ropes and marble-based board games such as Chinese checkers.  His son, John Jr. continued the business until his own retirement in 1989 at which time the company was liquidated.

Quote from Frier's granddaughter: "My name is Nancy L Frier and in regards to Alox marbles, my grandfather started Alox Mfg in 1919 in St Louis on Maple ave making shoelaces, the first shoelace factory west of the Mississippi. Then later started the Marble factory on Page ave in Pagedale Mo. The Marble machine is now in Dollywood. John Frier my grampa bought the marble machine from West Virgina and bought marbles first, then started making marbles, the factory ran 24 hours a day. My dad took over Alox and then they had to close the Marble factory."

More about Alox and John Frier – including a a marble website, a history of the company with lots of product pictures, and even more about Frier and Alox.

Frier and Alox names live on, not only thanks to his granddaughter, but the vintage toy collectors of marbles and kites are responsible for several of the above websites.  One more website that I found interesting was this one in Antique Week.  Even more curious?  Try some of these websites....

Station Hill  New Cumberland, West Virginia from Uible vintage postcard collectionPosted by Picasa

Station Hill, a section of WV Route 2 in New Cumberland, was closed in 2006 "to stabilize a slipping hillside" according to a news story from wtov9.com.  A separate News9 story says "Station Hill Road is a main thruway in northern Hancock County, heavily traveled by many motorists. And ... the road also may be in danger of collapsing.
A large dip is visible, and cars tip to the side as they come to that area. Barrels were put up after the wall next to the road collapsed earlier this year."

New Cumberland Presbyterian Church

Presbyterian Church - New Cumberland, West Virginia (post card from Uible vintage collection)

Close-up color picture of the stained glass windows at this website.  According to the website the church was built in 1888. Here's some additional information about early Presbyterians in Hancock County.

According to the Hancock County WVGenWeb site: The first Presbyterian church in the area was due to JAMES CAMPBELL who was born in Scotland in 1719 and emigrated to "The Colonies" as a young man. He took as his profession the dangerous vocation of overland pack merchant. He would routinely travel across the Allegheny Mountains through Indian Territory delivering badly needed supplies and news to settlers in the frontier.

The wilderness drew James and his family west into the Kings Creek area where he marked out his "tomahawk" claims and set out improving his land. It was during this claiming process that James and his wife Patience lost their oldest son John. While being pursued by Indians, John was drowned in Harmon's Creek, and another son James Jr.narrowly escaped being captured. Despite the hardships, James and Patience settled and began farming. He built a mill on Kings Creek, (then called Indian Creek) and would guard the mill at night to ward off any Indians that might be interested in burning the mill. James eventually acquired many large tracts of land and owned several thousand acres of present day Weirton, as neighboring settlers moved on, or became uncomfortable with Indian activity and sold their land.

James Campbell was an avid Presbyterian and family man and so set aside five acres of his land (south of New Cumberland, closer to Weirton) for the building of a church and cemetery, and donated a large sum of money for the establishment of a minister and congregation. In 1790 the new church petitioned the Redstone Presbytery for a preacher, and in November of that year the first sermon was taught at Three Springs Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John Brice.  James Campbell died in 1805 and was buried at his beloved Three Springs Presbyterian Church.

There is a Historical Marker in Weirton showing the location of the original Three Springs Church, and a dedication to James for his generosity. There is also a Historical Marker naming James as the owner of the land at the Peter Tarr Furnace.

According to information on Flats Cemetery: Settlers from eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut organized a Presbyterian congregation in 1794 at Pughtown.  (Pughtown is an unincorporated area 3 miles NE of New Cumberland, name since changed to New Manchester) Called the Flats Church, it later became the Fairview Presbyterian Church.  The original log church was located a mile south of Pughtown. It was replaced by a frame structure in 1808, and a red brick building was erected in 1839, seating 600. The Fairview church was built in 1890, and the old church torn down.  [Jean's cousin, Kenneth "Pat" Kessel lives in New Manchester.]
