1989 Catherine's Letter -Jan.26

Thursday, January 26, 1989, 9:00am

Dear Mother & Dad,

Well the good news first!!!  I didn't have to go to the Dr.'s appointment today as his office called me earlier this week and said that the ultrasound showed that the mass is definitely a cyst and nothing has to be done.  Although that is what they had assumed all along it's nice to have that confirmed.  They did suggest another mammogram in 6 months to see if any changes have taken place.

Thanks for the birthday package.  Opened the card (thanks for the check) but the presents are waiting for Sunday.  It bothers Wendy to have unopened presents sitting around but I can live with the suspense.  You are certainly on the ball in 1989 getting that package to me almost two weeks before the date!  Roberta said you were also prompt with Sid's present.  We went out to eat with them last Saturday which was his birthday.  We went to Sizzler where we had to wait in line for about 30 minutes but once inside were able to eat almost immediately and they do have an extra nice salad bar.  I'm still not positive about where we're going to celebrate my birthday but we're thinking of Pier d'Orleans where we ate with you in October, Mother, while Dad & Roberta were on that bike ride.

Sorry I missed getting a Fax off to you last week.  I didn't work on Friday and Thursday was a very busy day.  I do a Time for Twos program every Thursday morning and then in the afternoon Linda and I did booktalks for a group of parents and teachers of Chapter 1 students from all over western Maricopa County.  They had about 120 people at the program which was held in the library's auditorium.  On Friday Gerry and I went to the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament which was very interesting.  It was held at a course in north Scottsdale which is laid out very well for spectators.  We heard later there were 60,000 people there that day but it didn't seem all that crowded as they are spread out over the 4-mile course.  We were able to get two free passes (otherwise they cost $15) from Cecelia's husband Jeff who works for a landscape company that helped build the course.  We'll also get free passes to the Ladies Tournament in March because of that golf package we got at Christmas time.  The other tournament is the Seniors which is held this year at one of the Pointe courses -- we'll have to see if we can get passes to that too.

I was supposed to work both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend but was able to trade and work last weekend instead so I'll have my birthday weekend off.  Today the whole Youth Dept. (nine of us) are going out to lunch.  The Adult Services staff will cover for us.  We take turns covering for each other.  They have recently lost one of their reference staff who was offered a job as Asst. Director at the Chandler Library.  And the City has a hiring freeze right now so the position won't be filled at least in the near future.

Hope all is well in New Vienna!  Have a good weekend at the Emmaus (sp?) Walk , Mother.  Have you been riding your bike alot Dad or is the weather a deterrent?  Is the cross-country ride in April?

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy
