1969 Catherine's Letter -Feb.3

Monday, February 3, 1969

Dear Mother, Dad, Roberta, Serena, John and Mary,

Hi!  I was glad to get your letter, I mean post card today and to hear that you are still receiving the letters I send from this end.

I had a great birthday and thanks for all you did.  The radio has been going almost constantly – at least constantly when I'm in the room.  It's nice to have music other than the clacking of the typewriter.  The slacks are comfortable and they fit, too!  I lived in them all weekend.  I needed the blouses badly – they've both been through the wash already.  Unfortunately I didn't grab them out of the dryer soon enough so they had to be ironed though.  The slip will have to be shortened (or maybe I could save it to wear with my long formal sometime) but I congratulate you on your selections.  Everything is much appreciated.  Gerti and I have been making dents in the cheese.  She has some crackers so we've been managing pretty well.

The tobogganing party at Bob's was canceled because the snow was only left in patches on Saturday but yesterday it came down again and it is still blowing today. Bob gave me a beautiful pair of black fur-lined gloves so I'll try to remember to send yours home.  Thanks very much for the use of them.  We went to his house for dinner Thursday and the weekend was really great, too.

However, it had to be followed by Monday morning.  Miss Russian (German prof) told us today that we have the distinction of being the worst prepared of any class she has ever taught anywhere and to make it worse we're supposed to be better than her other class.  It's really too bad because I'm not motivated to study German at all.  I'm not even overly excited about going to Germany anymore.  It just seems kind of dumb to spend time studying something that after I come back from Germany will have absolutely no value at all.  Tomorrow we're having a big exam – not exactly a mid term but it will cover everything we've had so far.  And then on Wednesday is our history midterm which I won't have much time to study for because of this stupid German.  Psych is boring but I manage to struggle through the text and put up with an hour a week of class.  The interviews have gotten to be really simple though so there's no problem there.

Thanks for the cake.  It arrived intact.  I think I'll save the check to help get me settled in Chicago or wherever I end up.

It was nice to have Sue here.  Wednesday night her friends (i.e. the guys who used to make up "the family") took us (Sue and I) to dinner at "The Dragon Inn" a Chinese restaurant.  There were eight of us and everybody ordered something different so we had quite a selection.  She left early Friday morning as she had to be back in school today.

I hope this week goes as fast as last week did.  I'm ready for another weekend!  Write soon!

Love,
Catherine

PS  The gloves will have to come singly; they don't both fit.

1949 Jean's Letter -Feb.4

$150 for the Doctor, and $41.50 for 9-10 days in the hospital.

Friday
February 4, 1949
Dearest Mother and Daddy,

I will soon have been here a week – officially at 4:00 AM tomorrow morning but they keep you so busy it seems like only a couple of days.

We've received the card you addressed for Mr. & Mrs. Yount and many others – Cousin Maude, Janine [or Jeanne?], Mary & Bill, Miss Miller, Miss Grout (with notes added from 4 other librarians of East Cleve.), Mrs. McGonagle and others.  Then we both have been getting phone calls – Louise Gilmore, Jean Keil Walker, Mrs. McGonagle, Jeanne Campbell and others ––

Laura Uible called and suggested several doctors – one woman doctor very near us.  I told Dr. Weir and he called her this afternoon & she said she'd be out tomorrow morning to look at the baby.  She's not a pediatrician but I know that she's the same one that Norma Anderson (who lives across the hall from us with the 6 mo. old baby) goes to.

It's now Saturday evening & almost time for visitors (6:30-8:00).  I've felt so neglectful about not writing but the morning is spent with breakfast, feeding and then bathing – By that time, lunch is ready, then feeding time again, then rest period & we're supposed to spend two or three hours flat on our backs with the lamp reflector on our stitches.  Then 4:30 dinner & 5 the babies come in.  Tonight they were quite short-staffed so we were even later.

The doctor (pediatrician from West side ) didn't get in but no doubt will appear tomorrow.

My new roommate is awfully nice – she had a boy last Wednesday – already has a four year old girl so has given me many pointers on raising a child – good, practical advice.  It so happens that she lives on Henderson Road – not far from Mr. McGonagle.  She knows her by sight but not personally.

Some woman from the First Baptist Church called me this afternoon  – Dr. Phillips had told her I had a new baby.  Jeanne Campbell also called – I had asked her to buy me two nursing brassieres and  . . .

Catherine is gaining it seems & right now I think I'll be able to nurse her entirely as we never use the bottle they bring in.  The nurse says she's so sensitive – doesn't cry but whimpers unless she is handled just so-so.

Of course I'm anxious to get home to have a real family reunion.  Hope you'll get over to see us as soon as you can.

Love,
Jean, Harold and
Catherine

1979 Roberta's Letter -Feb.1

Thursday
February 1st /79
Hi!

Does Ohio seem warm after being in Oregon?  Was quite a surprise to hear you all on the phone last night.  M & M – were out walking Buffy – who isn't getting as many walks as he likes now – w/all the rain!

I paid the 1st 6 months of health insurance yesterday – did get $300 deductible – instead of $500 – because it only made a difference of some $9.00 a year.

We were in Sears over the week-end – I stopped in Catalog dept to ask about Mary's pants suit – and it was in.  It fits nicely & is real pretty.  She picked out a blouse of Marion's to go w/ it – she has really enjoyed Marion's clothes closet – wears something of hers about 4 times out of 5!!

Last night was the poorest – but still good – for a buck – dinner.  Hot dogs (2), beans, salad, chips, and cookies & punch.  Angus & Fred both enjoy going.  Both weeks it has been clear & dry both coming & going.

This dinner coming up on Saturday ought to be good – $3 – polynesian – both food & entertainment.  Mary Va seems to know alot of people at the church – both adults & children.  Marion & Rev. Sears are great teasers.  OH!  his daughter sure put out a concert.  She teaches voice at Southern Cal. University – in Orange County Opera group.  Marion asked Rev. Sears if she got the voice from him – he said NO – he still had his voice inside of him – as he never has gotten it out.  He has 5 daughters – guess all are very musical!

Mary Va has been doing lots of home work – working on paper for English –

The Post Office contract station at McClintock/Southern in TGY – closed yesterday – as whole store did.  That's the biggest TGY store in Mesa/Tempe area.  We should be busier.

Love,
Berta

1949 - Jean's missing pages -Feb.1

In the letter posted a few days ago from Jean to her parents, there seemed to be a page missing.  Indeed, there were three pages missing, and now more details on the first days of parenting in 1949 Cleveland.

[the following is pages 2-4 of a six-page letter from Jean to her parents on February 1, 1949.]

. . . Her nails are long and well shaped  but they wear those shirts with closed hands so you can't tell too much about them.

Dr. Weir said I got along fine & he wished all his patients were as quiet & good, etc.  I don't know whether Harold told you all the gory details.  Perhaps he knows those better than I do.

I had been feeling fine with the exception of the "showing" which started about Wednesday night but had no real cramps or pains until about 1:15 Saturday morning & they seemed to get worse but were at irregular times – sometimes 30 minutes apart and sometimes 8-10.  Finally we decided it best to call Dr. Weir so he said start right away for the hospital.  He would call and make all the necessary arrangements.

Of course, it had begun to snow and we could hear cars sliding and skidding on the street by our building.  We left about 3:30 AM and got to the hospital by 4:00 with only one major pain along the way.

They sent me up to labor-delivery room as soon as I got in and began to time my pains but kept saying I'd have to have harder & stronger ones before they'd be considered.  After an enema was over, they let Harold come up – about 5:00 (in the meantime he was supposedly studying for an exam just 3 hours later).  Finally when I was hardly conscious any longer he left & the next thing I knew it was 12:00 & Harold was telling me we had a little girl 7 lbs 1 oz at 8:55 AM.  Thinking he was teasing about the girl I wouldn't believe him but then the nurse told him he could see the baby on the way out & they showed her to me afterwards.

Later when I had been taken downstairs to my room, they brought her in & fully undressed her showing she was a good healthy specimen.  Dr. Weir came later & said all was fine & everything had gone very well – much faster than he had expected.

Harold came over at 6:00 for visiting hours and Jeanne Campbell came somewhat later & stayed until 8:00.  I was feeling very well by then & glad it was all over.  Some flowers – very pretty daffodils arrived earlier in the afternoon from Jeanne, Ruth and Ellen.

That night (Saturday) they brought the baby in and . . . .

1989 Roberta's Letter -Feb.2

2-1-89
Ground Hog Day

Hi!  I'm sure a ground hog here would have seen it's shadow – a very bright day!  Mother Theresa (of Calcutta) got in PHX yesterday, the homeless situation so serious here it has attracted her attention & her order has set up a foundation here.

There was a special MASS tonight at the Coliseum – where the ICE show was held.  Was to start at 7:30 pm but by 6:30 pm they had to start turning away people – I would have liked to have gone – but glad now not to have fought the crowds.  Alot of the T.V. channels are airing it complete during the OFF hours – (i.e. 1:00 am / 4:00 am – etc.)  Might tape it –

I'll enclose info from our new church – flu going around now – small crowd this past Sunday.

We are both getting better at using the VCR camera – Wendy wants me to get a tape of her dancing – at least w/ the camera (camcorder) the film is cheap & reusable!

We got this year's model of Smith Corona word processing – just today – it has lots of new/different features.  Sid loves that electronic stuff!  As for me – I'm using a 39¢ bic pen.

Thanks for calling – Tuesday pm – Hope this finds you both happy & healthy – how was the conference, Mom?

Love,
Roberta

1979 Roberta's Postcard to John -Feb.1

[postmarked 1 Feb 1979]

Hi!  Happy Ground Hogs Day!  Was good to talk to you – how does it feel to be back in school – last quarter no less!

It's been raining since we got the bikes – I should have kept the $ in the bank!

Mary Va is doing good at school – she seems to know lots of people down at the Church – maybe she ought to go into politics.

Are you going to work at Wells weekends?  What are you using for transportation?  You ought to get a Honda Express too!!

Love, Berta

1979 MV Letter -Feb.1

2-1-79
Hi!  I hear that you all have had some bad snow and we've had bad rains.  Roberta keeps complaining that she can't ride her express because of the rain.  She has ridden it to Stubbs's on a couple of errands.

Fredly [?] got your card yesterday, but couldn't think who Harold & Jean were.  I guess he mentioned it to Marion.

I have started eating lunch, and I've become pretty good friends with this girl named Maria who just started going here from a private school.  No, she isn't Spanish or Mexican, but it can be confusing because we're both in the same Spanish class, I now sit beside here (and we usually get in trouble for talking).

Well, you've already heard everything about contest so ! . . . .  I have become unusually conservative now.  Except for food I have only bought things twice!

Are you going to send my plane ticket very soon?  I am anxious to get home this year, for once.  I'll miss it, but I think I'll be able to contain myself.  I have met a lot of really neat people, as the saying goes.

My arm got really rested up over the night.  It feels a lot better – I may get the cast taken off soon!

Love,
Mary Va.

1949 Jean's Letter -Feb.1

Tuesday morning
February 1, 1949
Dearest Mother and Daddy,

It was nice of you to call last night and I feel quite ashamed for not having written to you sooner.  We really are kept very busy.

Its hard to believe that we are now Mama and Daddy but we do have a darling little girl.  Her face is filling out more & more and doesn't have so much of that new born look.  Her face is round like mine with a real pug nose and plenty of soft black hair.  Her features are quite delicate – ears – small close to her head – dark eyes and right now not much of any chin but I hope that fills out better later.

Her legs are on the thin side and has long narrow feet.  Her nails are long and well shaped but they wear those shirts with . . . .

. . . . put her at the breast.  The milk has just begun to come today though.  Each time she comes in, every 4 hours, she is usually sound asleep & soon becomes that way & refuses to be wakened.  She doesn't seem to be under nourished though & will no doubt make up for lost time when she arrives home.

The days have just flown by – in fact I can't account for each one.  They got me up for awhile on Sunday and yesterday they let me go to the bathroom by myself having been up twice during the day. And now I'm writing in the chair.

The girl who is in the room with me has been quite uncomfortable as they gave her a spinal anesthetic and as a result she has had quite severe headaches.  She is only 19 – had a baby boy & was quite set on having a girl but all is well that way now.

There seems so much to tell but you must come over as soon as the weather clears for we are so proud of our little family.  No doubt I'll stay at least nine days in the hospital (that's Monday – the day of Harold's last exam).  Perhaps things have worked out best that Harold can have the house to himself to study now except he has a long way to come every evening.

Thanks for your call & I'll be writing more details soon again.

Love,
Jean, Harold and Catherine

[written on the margins]
Hope you like the name "Catherine" – it was quite on the spur of the moment but pleases both of us.

Received your letter – thanks too for the money.  In case you get to Pgh. we could use a sweater & bonnet as I will need those to wear home from the hosp. according to a letter they send around.

1969 Catherine's Letter -Jan.27

January 27, 1969

Dear Mother, Dad, Roberta, Serena, John and Mary,

Hi!  Here it is Monday again, the only thing I can think of good about Monday's is that when they are over there's only four more days of classes until the weekend.  Actually, they aren't that bad, it's just that I don't like psych or German class which both meet on Monday morning and then to make things even more unpleasant German lab is thrown in too.

Thanks for the packages.  I opened the one from Lazarus and the jumper is beautiful.  It looks really nice with that sweater too.  Not only that, but it fits!  I wore it Friday night when I went out with Bob and he approved so it joins my collection of favorites!  The other package also came Friday.  I opened it far enough to find the three presents so they are sitting on the dresser waiting for the 29th.  Mrs. (Priscilla) Walker sent me a nice card.

Signing the card to make me perless was also a nice present.  I don't know whether I deserve all that "faith" but I can guarantee you being perless won't have anything to do with it.  [Don't ask me what per stood for, but it had to do with curfew.]

There was a time last week when the grass could be seen in spots but then the temperature dropped 42º in 24 hours and the snow came down again.  I hope it snows gobs more because the Del Megas may have a traying party at Bob's this weekend.  The Del Megas are a guys society of which Bob is a member.  Gerti is going with the president of the society, Woody, and we don't talk of much else.  The party's not for definite yet though cause Bob hasn't told his parents.  We were going to go see them yesterday but his car was so cold it wouldn't start.

I like Bob a whole lot and I'm doing my best to be sensible about the whole thing.  When I go to Germany next fall it will mean we will be apart for six months and then he might go next spring which would make that three months longer.  Right now I concern myself only with enjoying the present and I'll let the future take care of itself.  He hopes to take German next quarter somewhere and somehow start to fulfill the graduation requirements of this school.  It mainly depends on what job he gets where he goes.  I hope he gets his first choice -- The Museum of Science and Industry, that is assuming Gerti and I end up there.

It's alway nice to hear from you all, and I appreciate the clippings.  I can't say as I remember 20 years ago too clearly but I have alot of pleasant memories of things since then -- and you all certainly have a big part of them!

Love,
Catherine

1989 Catherine's Letter -Jan.26

Thursday, January 26, 1989, 9:00am

Dear Mother & Dad,

Well the good news first!!!  I didn't have to go to the Dr.'s appointment today as his office called me earlier this week and said that the ultrasound showed that the mass is definitely a cyst and nothing has to be done.  Although that is what they had assumed all along it's nice to have that confirmed.  They did suggest another mammogram in 6 months to see if any changes have taken place.

Thanks for the birthday package.  Opened the card (thanks for the check) but the presents are waiting for Sunday.  It bothers Wendy to have unopened presents sitting around but I can live with the suspense.  You are certainly on the ball in 1989 getting that package to me almost two weeks before the date!  Roberta said you were also prompt with Sid's present.  We went out to eat with them last Saturday which was his birthday.  We went to Sizzler where we had to wait in line for about 30 minutes but once inside were able to eat almost immediately and they do have an extra nice salad bar.  I'm still not positive about where we're going to celebrate my birthday but we're thinking of Pier d'Orleans where we ate with you in October, Mother, while Dad & Roberta were on that bike ride.

Sorry I missed getting a Fax off to you last week.  I didn't work on Friday and Thursday was a very busy day.  I do a Time for Twos program every Thursday morning and then in the afternoon Linda and I did booktalks for a group of parents and teachers of Chapter 1 students from all over western Maricopa County.  They had about 120 people at the program which was held in the library's auditorium.  On Friday Gerry and I went to the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament which was very interesting.  It was held at a course in north Scottsdale which is laid out very well for spectators.  We heard later there were 60,000 people there that day but it didn't seem all that crowded as they are spread out over the 4-mile course.  We were able to get two free passes (otherwise they cost $15) from Cecelia's husband Jeff who works for a landscape company that helped build the course.  We'll also get free passes to the Ladies Tournament in March because of that golf package we got at Christmas time.  The other tournament is the Seniors which is held this year at one of the Pointe courses -- we'll have to see if we can get passes to that too.

I was supposed to work both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend but was able to trade and work last weekend instead so I'll have my birthday weekend off.  Today the whole Youth Dept. (nine of us) are going out to lunch.  The Adult Services staff will cover for us.  We take turns covering for each other.  They have recently lost one of their reference staff who was offered a job as Asst. Director at the Chandler Library.  And the City has a hiring freeze right now so the position won't be filled at least in the near future.

Hope all is well in New Vienna!  Have a good weekend at the Emmaus (sp?) Walk , Mother.  Have you been riding your bike alot Dad or is the weather a deterrent?  Is the cross-country ride in April?

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1979 Roberta's Letter -Jan.26

[1/26/79]
Friday morning
Good Morning ! ! ! !

Thanks alot for your letter yesterday and all the enclosures, including the check ! ! ! ! !  Just came from the bank now -- Found out just a week or two ago that the bank right here by me has window hours from 7 a.m. till 6 p.m. so it makes it much better to go to the bank before I come to the store instead of waiting till my lunch hour (which is only 1/2 hour) and spending it there.

It is still raining . . . even the roads like Alma School, Dobson, etc. are only open one lane going both directions -- (two instead of the four) makes for alot worse time in trying to get around.

Mary Virginia has really been practicing her song for tomorrow.  She has to be at the high school by 6:15 so Marion keeps reminding me that I'm her sister -- so I'll be driving her.  She has had more than her fill getting home early this week trying to make it to school.

I'm buying health insurance.  Getting $500 deductible so I sure hope never to have to use it.  It's with a company out of Oregon but I can't remember the full name of it.  Right now I'm just tired of reading policies.

Now it is lunch time . . . yesterday during lunch I rushed over to HOM to the Dr's . . . still missed work -- but did get back by 2:30.  It's nice to just be able to stay here today.

Tonight is the concert - EVIE - or maybe it is spelled another way.  But Mary is to sing tonight at Mesa High -- some sort of regional or district tryout -- not related to tomorrow's activities.

We have been practicing our Spanish at home.  Can now carry on about a three minute conversation, hopefully it will improve with time.  Mary is helping us.  Really Marion is quite good about it -- she had four years of it in high school so remembers quite a bit.

The Williams seem to enjoy the Wednesday night supper at the Church.  They got another wheel chair from the nursing home and then pushed both of them over there.  Then afterwards I helped Marion with getting them back home, Mr. Williams back to his house.  Timing was just right, when we were back to the Church, Mary Va. was just getting out of youth group.  Also the rains started up just as we were getting back to the Church from Mr. Williams.

I want to get a basket for the bike.  They don't have them in to fit the new style -- like what we got.  It is not called a moped.  It's called a Honda Express.   Runs on either premium or low-lead gas.  Tanks holds some .65 gallon.  Not much.  What I would really like is for the rains to quit so that I can start riding the bike.  We've had something like 2 half days of sunshine since I got the bike.  That money could still be in the bank making money for me.  I did wait till I got the interest out of it before taking it out.

I got a Lee Wards catalog and have ordered some things out of it.  They sure beat the local craft store for prices.  Will be interesting to see the quality and when the things arrive.  At least this way you get out of paying sales tax on the stuff -- postage and delivery instead.

Please send us some recent pictures of Miss Wendy.  If you want them back just let us know.  Did I ever tell you that the large picture of the family did come in right after you all left.  Now we have a large picture (of course) of Buffy chewing on a bone.  If you all would like a copy just let me know.  Mary and Buffy get along fine.

Love,
Berta

Now Sunday – better just send this to #148 –
Rode the express yesterday – over to Dorothy's
We all enjoyed the EVIE Concert Friday night.

Love,
Berta

1979 Catherine's Letter to John -Jan.24

January 24, 1979
Dear John,

Hi!  Just wanted to send you a couple of pictures we got back from Christmas.  Have you had yours developed yet?  I'd like to have some prints if they come out good.

Does it seem to be strange to be back in school after your long vacation?  You don't have too much more to go though do you.

Dad said you made some lasagna.  How did it come out?  I would have written down the recipe for you if that would have made it easier.  Were you able to find ricotta cheese that wasn't outdated?  Have you tried any other gourmet meals since you left here?  We fixed that Mexican dinner for Dad and he seemed to like it.  Last night we had liver, one of Mother's favorites you know.

They left this morning for a tour of Portland, Astoria and the Oregon seacoast.  I guess they plan to be back on Saturday and Sunday we hope to get up to Kah-nee-ta for the swim we missed while you and Barry were here.  Hope we have better weather this time.  Then on Monday we are going to Bend to eat in the same place that we ate dinner on the big trip in1962.  [Pine Tavern for #30 birthday]  Some of the snow has melted here but most of it is still on the ground.  What a bummer – hope it is about done for the winter.  Especially since we will have to shovel it once we get moved.

We are to get the key to our apartment on Friday but we aren't actually going to be living there until the first weekend in February.  That way we'll be able to move a few things over at a time and hopefully the curtains will be up by the time we get completely moved in.  They think now that the rest of the apartments will be ready about Feb. 15th.

We hope you are readjusting to the academic scene.  (That reminds me did you see Delta House on TV?  It is supposed to be a take-off of Animal House – pretty funny).  Write when you get the chance – new address is 257 West G St. #18.

Love,
Catherine Gerry & Wendy

1979 Roberta's Letter -Jan.24

[1/24/79]
Good Morning!!!!

Got to work early so decided to get a letter out to you good people . . . Marion dropped me off on her way to work . . . which will work out nicely tonight when they come over and meet me for the classes.  The high school where both the Spanish and voice lessons are being taught is right down Rural Road about a mile from here.  Mary Va. seems to be excited about the voice lessons, if it weren't for Dorothy, Chris, Doreen, and Marion taking Spanish with me I'd be getting cold feet about the Spanish.

Marion got in last night, right on time.  We (of course) took Buffy with us.  I guess it had been about two weeks since I've been to the airport, don't know when the next time I'll be there.  Thursday night was sure a mess . . . terrible weather -- storm warnings out, but to top it all off, Marion had come to the store, had lunch with me, then took the car and left me the truck, as she had originally taken the truck to school that day.  So at 5:30 when I'm ready to leave the store -- I had no keys to the truck.  I called Mary Va. the two sets were both at home.  Also the set of keys to the car that was at the airport.  Sally was going to drive us to the airport that night to get the car . . . but it all worked out fine.  She picked up Mary at home then the two came over here, we had supper at Wendy's and then went to the airport, then back home with the car.  Took a five minute break and then back to the store to get the truck.  I got home from work (for good) that night at 8:45!!!!

We had a pretty quiet weekend, went to the Christian Book Store in Tempe on Saturday morning.  I had a $20 bill, and Mary Va. was able to spend $19.96 . . . then as we were walking out she found something she wanted for 4¢ !!!!  She sure has the ability for spending money !!!!

Yesterday afternoon Christ Stubbs, Mary Va. and I went bowling.  At the Brunswick lanes it is now $1.25 per game -- that's with the electronic score card deal . . . which of course you have no choice but to use.

5:30 – time to go –
supper – class –

Love,
Berta

1979 GHU Letter -Jan.23

Jan. 23 – [1979]
Dear John –

How does it feel to be entirely upon your own while at home?  At least you can talk to the flowers in the window or on the table.  It is said that will make them grow better.

The postman was very good to me yesterday as there were 3 letters in the mail for me.  One your Dad had sent & was glad to know you had arrived home safely after reading about the bad western weather.  We enjoyed hearing from you while on your trip.  A letter from your Mother & one from Roberta.  Hope she can manage that motor bike & doesn't have an accident.  Ariz seems to have weather difficulties this winter.  It is rather cool here this morning.  We have the heat turned on.

Cris & Marita went to Hawaii the first of the month and have returned home bringing apples back with them.  They sent us 3 from N.C. & they were very good.  It was my job to cut the fruit into pieces after some one sliced them.  Cris phoned us last week wanting to know how ours tasted (which were very good) for he said theirs were soured.  I wonder what went wrong for that seems strange we would have the good ones & theirs no good.  It seems as if M's folks gave her the money for a trip to Hawaii for a graduating present so Cris had to pay his own way & he thought it a little hard on his budget & M. would hardly want to go alone.  They thought it a wonderful place to visit.

I had 4 more avocados given to me (especially) & the family which is evidently the last from the tree.  They have been so good.

Fri. morning the Tourist S.S. Class had their class meeting at 10 o'clock & a lady from another class gave a book review name of book I can't recall at this time but was interesting.  About one of the former writers of the Upper Room.  Mrs. Henry knew him personally & he was a great traveler & as a young man very poor financially & at one time made the trip around the world with one suit of clothes & a few belongings.  We didn't serve refreshments because we are all to the age that no one volunteered.  We had a nice meeting anyway.

Sat. at 8:15 Aunt M., Marianne, Robert, W., Rob, his girl friend Kim & myself left for Miami & spent the day at the Seaquarium.  Very interesting.  Rob took me around in the w. chair & we had a very interesting day & the weather perfect for a change but we did wonder at times if it might rain.  It was a little cloudy so we didn't have the hot sunshine to bother.

Last evening Mrs. Murphy & John had us for supper & we had a nice evening with them.  I must do a little morning work in my room so must get busy.

Love,
Grandma

1949 Jean's Letter -Jan.24

Sunday 1/24/49
Dearest Mother & Daddy,

We just got home from Church (Franklin Circle Christian) and Harold is studying so I thought I'd drop a line before filling that knowing feeling he gets so soon after church.  We ate a whole recipe of waffles plus a half a large grapefruit and its still with me.

By the way, Thursday when I went to see Dr. Weir, he said that I hadn't gained any more so wouldn't have to stick to any diet Dr. Bill had suggested.

Tomorrow I'm to go the dentist and meet June Gilbert at 10:00 just an hour before her appointment with him (the same Dr. Davis).

We decided not to paint the bassinet as it looks ok with the lining on it – very nice the lining is – and so it has all been wrapped in a sheet and put away until needed.

The four kimonos and wrapping blankets came yesterday afternoon so I don't need anything at all now.  They are all so pretty – nicer than any at the stores here in Cleveland.

I had thank-you notes from Mrs. Cochran and Harriette for the Christmas gifts.  I thanked Bob over the phone but guess I should have written.  Perhaps I'll write later this afternoon.

We'd love to have you over anytime you can come except just before the 7th (Monday) – which is Harold's hardest exam – that's two weeks from tomorrow.  Any other time would suit us OK.

We have been thinking more about names again – especially as two doctors have thought it would be a boy.  Do you like the name Timothy Wallace?  Better than Wallace Ballantyne?  We think we do – would appreciate your opinion in the matter.  Haven't chosen Timothy for any special reason – just like the name – also nickname Tim or Timmy.

I finally finished the booties and nightgown (which I trimmed with blue ric-rac).  I want to make a couple of bath aprons and still have material cut for another kimono.

Got 4 huge grapefruit at the market yesterday for 25¢.  Also 5 pink ones for same price.  Nice bananas 10¢ lb., lettuce, celery, pears 3# for 29¢, apples (Jonathan) 3# 29¢, carrots, onions, tangerines, milk – 2 qts of homogenized in carton – 35¢, diced beets (frozen) – 7¢.  Bought 55 birth announcements – all they had in one kind – waiting to hear from you about any musts to send to.

Love,
Jean & Harold

1969 Catherine's Letter -Jan.20

January 20, 1969
Dear Mother, Dad, Roberta, Serena, John, and Mary,

Hi!  Greetings from the slowly melting North Pole.  I really like the weather warmer like this.  Maybe Spring is here!

Thursday we turn in our preference cards for Career Service.  1st Choice: Museum of Science and Industry, 2nd: Marshall Field, and 3rd: Carson Pirie & Scott.

Not much is new around here.  Bob went to Chicago for the weekend so things were pretty quiet.  I went out with this other guy Friday night and it now stands as the worst night of my entire life.  We were just kind of casual friends and I thought he was an OK guy.  It was kind of funny though.  It seemed like I'd been with him for a really long time and I was getting so disgusted I finally told him it must be time to get back to the dorm.  HA!  It turned out to be 10:00,  DeWaters never looked better though!

Speaking of DeWaters, did you all receive something to sign for me about the porter system?  Please, I've been eating some vegetables and drinking orange juice for breakfast, getting my proper rest, studying reasonably hard, going to classes, working (but not too much), I keep my half of the room clean, wash my clothes every week or so, keep my hair clean and my bangs trimmed, never go out after dark unescorted, and I try to write home every week.  Does that sound convincing enough?

German gets harder every day.  I don't know what I'm ever going to do in Germany.  I know about as much German as a two year old knows English.  The class is run almost entirely in German and I'm lucky if I can catch one word in every sentence.  The worst part (but I'm sure the most practical) is that we have to memorize these conversations and then get up in front of the class and act them out.  I dread them almost as much as the psych interviews.  No, I guess the psych interviews are much worse.  I keep telling myself that it is a wonderful opportunity to learn to express myself and get my thoughts across but that doesn't keep me from hating every minute of it.

History I like.  The books we're reading for the class are fairly interesting, and I've even got one from the library for extra credit.  The prof is a real stickler for detail so my grade probably won't be anything fantastic but I am enjoying the class.

I watched the inauguration on TV today.  Bob and I are going to chapel tonight to hear some Kalamazoo doctor who worked in Vietnam.  You know, I really missed Bob while he was gone.  I think it was the longest weekend of my life.  He got back yesterday afternoon though.  It was an even longer weekend because I thought of you all in New Vienna.

Serena, I hope you had a nice birthday.  I kept waiting for the Marine Band (or whoever it was) to play happy birthday to you during the ceremonies today.

Love,
Catherine

Hi!  This is where Sara is staying – but it looks like Holiday Inn after the Phoenician!  It was 75º today.  Sid put air in my tires!  Sid got a printer to go with the computer – so we are very high tech now!  Actually – it's just Sid!

1979 Roberta's letter -Jan.20

[1/20?/79]

Wednesday pm

Just got back from Wednesday night supper – Church – had tuna noodle casserole, green beans, salad & cookies & ice cream – Mary Va stayed for youth group.  Marion is watching baseball – no – its basketball game.

Mom – your letter came today – also the nice letter from Carol –

I'll be enclosing a picture of the EXPRESS [a motor bike?] – ours are like the blue one – both on the front & inside the brochure.  Now if it ever quits raining I'll be able to start saving $ on gas!  Just yesterday Alma School opened up – then today – it got washed out again!  More roads now are washed out than before – just before Christmas.

I have an interesting meeting coming up – Sat. pm – a lady I met through post office – she owns a travel agency – has bunches of tours – mostly older people coming up – most this summer – (she did not mention pay) – involved in conducting – but would get mine plus 1 paid for – I'll let you know how it goes –

Love, Berta

Hope Dad didn't have trouble getting to Madras.

1989 Roberta's Letter -Jan.17

1-17-89
Hi –

It's been a week since Sid had this article ready to send – & I keep saying – "No – let me include a note . . . "

Still not sure about if I'll go to D.C. Conference – it really will mean that I probably won't make the FLA scene – at least in March.  Maybe April??

I'd not told my boss that my intentions were to go to FLA in March – so - - -

We (S.V.) we were given alot of furniture today – right now it's filling up our living room!

We have tickets to the play – Six women w/ Brain Death or Expiring Minds Want to Know for Sunday PM.  It's longest running play in PHX – since April '88.

I'll enclose church bulletin – tho I see Sid cut out the Benediction – to the tune of Edelweiss

  • May the Lord, Mighty God
    Bless & Keep you Forever
    Grant us peace, perfect peace
    Courage in every endeavor
Lift your eyes & see his face
    And his grace forever
    May the lord, mighty God,
    Bless & keep you forever.
Love,
Roberta

1989 MV's Letter -Jan.17

17 January 89
Dear Folks,

Sorry not to see you this weekend at all.  We did make it to Louisville in plenty of time for the recital, which was excellent.  It turned out this lady was originally from Portsmouth and got her Bachelors & Masters at U.C. Conservatory.  It was a very nice recital.

The wedding went well.  We got there Friday about 5:30, the rehearsal was at 6:00 and then they had pizza afterword.  I went with Diane and stayed with her folks who live in Howell.  About 12:30 Saturday it started sleeting and then turned to snow.  By the time we got to Diane's I decided we'd all be safer in Michigan for the night.  By the time we left Sunday the roads were barely even wet.

Lorraine is coming down Saturday to visit and will stay until Sunday afternoon.  Asbury college is doing Amahl and the night visitors so we'll see that.

Sent Serena a birthday card this morning.  The card organizer I sent her was returned UPS yesterday; they had been unable to deliver it 3 times.

I'm sponsoring one possibly two people on the May walk in Lexington.  We went to the gathering this month.  They don't have any waiting list at all.  I don't understand that.

Enclosed are grades & comic strip for Mother.  Hope everything is fine.

Love –
Mary Va.

1969 Catherine's Letter -Jan.13

1/13/69
Dear Mother, Dad, Roberta, Serena, John, and Mary,

Hi!  Sorry I haven't written very much but things have been happening so fast around here I almost have to carry my toothbrush around for a couple hours to find a spare minute to stick it in my mouth.

Let's go back to the day I arrived here around 7AM January 4.  (I'm writing this letter with the aid of my diary - ha)  There wasn't anyone else around so I had all day to get packed-un, and rested up.  Bob had brought his stuff up on Saturday to get it unloaded and noticed the light in my room so he came over.  We couldn't do much 'cause per was at 10:30.  We ended up going to his house (he lives in Marcellus, you can look it up on the map) and we made home made ice cream.  His parents are really nice, they have a nice house, and I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.  Just to throw in a few interesting facts: he's the only offspring and his last name (yes, Mother pay attention) is Foncannon.  His parents are both school teachers and they grown Christmas trees on the farm.  Then classes started and I didn't see Bob much except at meals, and we studied together sometimes, and on the weekend.  In other words I haven't seen much of anyone else.

As for the classes:  German is a real challenge.  There are only 12 in the class and 2 or 3 of those are auditing.  She really throws the stuff at us fast.  I don't know how much I get but the exposure is good.  History is pretty interesting.  We're studying the Reconstruction Period right now.  Last week was all lecture and this week is discussion of The Tragic Era one of the four books we read for the course.  Psychology is pure torture.  It only meets one hour a week for lecture, which isn't bad at all.  But, the book is divided into 15 units and every time we complete a unit and feel we have mastered the subject matter we have to go and have an interview with our teachers assistant and we're supposed to talk for half an hour on what we've learned.  I've gotten through one so at least I only have 14 more.

The business office has hired me to work 10 hours a week which are 11-12 and 3-4 every day in the snack bar except Tuesday when I'm supposed to have a class in the afternoon.  To make up that hour I work from 12:45-1:45 on Sundays.  I'm not going to make nearly as much money this quarter, mainly because I'm not working so much and there are other things I'd rather do.

I just got back from swimming with Gerti and found your message.  I'm sorry about Granddad.  If I thought there was some way I could help I'd cut classes and come home tomorrow but I think I can accomplish about as much here.  My spirit and sympathies will be there but I'll think of him in the backyard swing.

We've only had 23 inches of snow – at least that is all that is on the ground right now.  I'm getting a little sick of looking at it.  At least Bob has a car so we don't have to walk everyplace, not that there are so many places to go in the middle of January anyway.

If you recall I mentioned Greg several times in the past.  Well, I hadn't seen him at all this quarter.  He'd called a couple times but I was never in so he finally left a message that he'd be up to get me for dinner.  I got a little ticked when he showed up 1/2 hour late (relative, fooey).  We did get through the dinner successfully even though at one point I ran into Bob and had to tell him about how I was explaining a few things to an old friend.  Hmmmm.  And then Greg and I parted with an extremely civil, "maybe I'll see you again sometime."

I'll keep you posted on the CS [career service, coming up in Spring 1969] If I do go to Chicago there are several possibilities: Museum of Science and Industry, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Marshall Field, and Newberry Library.

Bob's coming over in a few minutes so I better be finishing this off.  My regards to everyone and I'll be thinking about you all.

Love,
Catherine

1989 Catherine's Letter -Jan.13

Friday, January 13, 1989 1:30pm

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  What's new with you folks this week?  Thanks for your call last Friday.  It's always good to talk to you.  I just talked to Roberta on the phone a few minutes ago but she said nothing is new with the Kings.  She did say that Serena Sharp (the Japanese lady) is going into a nursing home today.

The latest news on my health situation is that the Dr.'s office called me this week and said the second x-ray did show that there is a "mass" present and so the next step is to have an ultrasound to determine if it is fluid or solid before they determine what to do next.  The ultrasound is scheduled for 2:20 this afternoon so I will be headed there shortly.  Then I have another appointment with the surgeon on Jan. 26th.

Also today (at 7am) I had some minor dental surgery done – an osseous flap to be precise to expose part of a root section of a tooth that has been giving me problems.  It wasn't too bad a procedure but I do have to take antibiotics for about a week and go back next Friday to have the stitches removed.  The numbness has about worn off and the pain isn't too horrible so I think I will survive.

Wendy only had a half day of school today as it is the end of the grading period.   . . .  a teacher in-service day.  I have Monday as a city holiday but I'm going to be working in the morning doing two teacher in-service presentations for the Glendale Schools.

Sid's birthday is coming up next week along with Serena's.  I need to get a card for Serena.  I guess we will be going out to dinner with R&S.  Sid's daughter, Sarah, will be here during that time for some presentation she is doing at ASU.

Well, I need to get a move on so I have time to eat something before I go for the ultrasound.  I'll let you know when I know more.

Hope all is well in New Vienna!

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

1989 Family Letter -Jan.10

January 10, 1989

Dear Family:

We are getting used to writing 1989, the year 2000 will be a bigger adjustment.  One of my goals this year is to become more proficient with the piano, even a little practice makes me appreciate that talent of playing.

Jean had another of her six Saturday morning meetings in Wilmington last Saturday morning in the preparation for the Emmaus walk, which is the last weekend of this month.  From there we went on to Waynesville for  lunch and then walked "thru" the umpteen antique shops in the area.  It is a real mecca if one is "hep" in that area.

Sunday we met the Goodings for lunch, then went to a Church meeting in Milford, which was good.  There were 5 of us from N.V.  Yes, our Church did pay 100% of our 1988 apportionments.  Last night was the administrative board meeting and it was reported that we have 62 of the needed 100 hymnals paid for.  (100 tonite thanks to UMW + others).

Last Wednesday Dad was on the Lions Club Committee for the dinner, which went real well.  He had invited the Clinton Co. Probate Judge to give the program and we had lots of questions.

G.G. was back on the job yesterday after two weeks in Florida.  They talked with the Lippmans there in Naples and also brought us some nice fruit.

[following was added to John's copy]

John – appreciated your call – we sure don't want to impose on Mark on either NY or FL.  In fact we live just as long, etc. even if we don't get to NYC, but do plan to go to LW to see the family.

See you on the 27th, John – unless the weather is really SOUR – we are overdue on bad weather coming.

Love,
Mother & Dad

1979 MV in AZ letter -Jan.10

Wednesday Jan. 10, 1979
Dear Everybody,

Hi!  A lot has happened since Mother left.  Right now I'm in Spanish – I would be busy except I did lesson 18 yesterday, so I'm ahead (don't have a Cardiac, Mother).

Last night Roberta came home, & after supper, she asked Marion if you should report a robbery if they had broken in, but not successfully stolen anything.  It turned out someone had gotten in the truck (it was unlocked) and tried to take the AM-FM 8-Track tape deck out of the truck yesterday while she was at work.  They got the knobs & some needlepoint.  Evidently they got scared off, because all they had to do was lift up the dashboard & take out the radio.  Berta & Marion took the truck over to Tempe Police Dept. last night, and I guess they got finger prints.  Then they went over to Diamond's to get Marion a purse (almost exactly like Roberta's, but they didn't have it in stock.  So they called Diamond's at Metro Center, and tried to get it, but they said they were taking inventory, so they can't sent it over for some stupid reason.

Last nite we ate in.  Marion fixed steak that was really good.  I think she fried it – I fixed my famous fruit salad, and put in lots of bananas for Roberta.  Monday Nite we picked up Roberta at work & then went to the "Wendy's" for supper, the one right there near Roberta.

School is getting easier this week – No homework last night or tonite.  Today in English I'm going to hear somebody from A.P.S. (Ariz. Public Service) for this career stuff.  Yesterday we had a test over the different job levels, what is in a resume & covering letter, and career clusters.  All in all it wasn't too tuff.  We also had to turn in a career folder which included doing a covering letter & resume.

In Patriettes (Chorus) we're starting to do choreography (sp?) on one song.  It's sort of fun – everybody gets all goofed up.  Especially me!

Better go – Everybody says Hi, including Buffie.  Berta keeps bugging me to call, but I said no.

Love – Mary Va.

P.S. We plan on eating at the church tonite.

1929 Dwight Morrow

The following clippings are both from the Hancock County Independent, January 10, 1929

John Marshall, Dwight Morrow Get
Warm Welcome in U.S. Senate

The last official visit paid to the Senate by John Marshall, retiring assistant attorney-general, was in company with his friend and patron, Dwight M. Morrow, ambassador to Mexico, whose latest acquired title is "father-in-law of Lindbergh."  Both men are former residents of Hancock County.

Mr. Marshall was paid many a fine compliment and extended best wishes by senator of both parties, with whom he got along famously while dispensing patronage of the department of justice.  That was his duty; he was the assistant attorney-general in charge of personnel, otherwise administrative officer of the big department.  He represented his branch of the service frequently before Senate committees.  He had many friends among the senators, several of them intimate.  Senator Pat Harrison and Marshall favored each other as golf partners at the Chevy Chase Club.

Mr. Marshall's last visit to the White House in an official capacity was to go before President Hoover to sign the commission of his (Marshall's) successor, Charles PP. Sisson of Rhode Island.  The following day the Senate confirmed Sisson's nomination.  When Mr. Sisson appears and is sworn in, Mr. Marshall will turn over the office to him.  Mr. Marshall will practice law in Washington D.C. as a member of the firm of Covington, Burling & Rublee.

Morrow is Still Cabinet Favorite

Hancock County Son Leaves Washing-
ton Without Seeing Hoover.

Dwight M. Morrow, ambassador to Mexico, a former Hancock county boy having resided for a number of years at Pughtown, and mentioned prominently as the next secretary of state, last [sic] Washington Monday night without seeing President-elect Herbert Hoover, according to press dispatches from the Capitol.

Mr. Morrow left for the Bahama Islands within a few hours after Mr. Hoover reached Washington.  He is to remain there about ten days, returning to Washington for final instructions before departing for Mexico to resume his duties as the official representative of the United States.

Although the fact that Mr. Morrow did not get a conference with Mr. Hoover, caused some speculation, those close to the political situation it meant little, that Mr. Hoover is seeing nobody at this time regarding his cabinet selection.

Throughout the political world it is earnestly believed Hancock County's son is to be the next secretary of state.

* * * * *
Morrow did not become Secretary of State.  Henry L. Stimson of New York served as US Secretary of State, March 28, 1929 - March 4, 1933.  Morrow served as US Ambassador to Mexico from 1927-1930, then was elected as Senator from New Jersey 1930 until his death on October 5, 1931 at the age of 58.
