Catherine getting older 1949

Here I am at a mature seven weeks old, this picture taken March 21, 1949; stamped on the back: Free Foto, W L Birch.  The address on the back is listed as 1296 W. 25th Street, Cleveland 13, Ohio.  This area appears to be sandwiched between an expressway US-20, an industrial area, Old River, a canal, and close to Lake Erie southwest of downtown Cleveland.  Serena, Mom and Dad have been back to that address more recently than I -- actually I can't recall ever having been there, but here's proof that I did once reside there.

Nearby Libraries -- US Courts Library .6 miles northeast, Carnegie West Public Library .8 miles south, the Cleveland Public Library is 1.1, miles east, also Cleveland Law Library 1.1 miles northeast.

East Cleveland Public Library, at 14101 Euclid Ave., is where Jean worked as a Children's Librarian between library school graduation in January 1946 and the fall of 1948.  A previous address for Jean prior to her marriage was 1856 East 101st St., Cleveland not far off Euclid Ave. and 2.6 miles from the library.  The Google map picture shows half of an older red house and an empty lot, so not sure if the house is still standing.

A previous address for both Jean and HH was at a house on Hessler Road, just off Euclid Ave., owned by a nurse Kathryn Heene, with rooms to rent.  Jean had the daughter's former room and HH later moved into a small room off the kitchen, the former maid's room.  When Jeanne Campbell [Sanker] moved from New Cumberland to Cleveland to attend business school, she and Jean moved up the street  and shared an apartment with two other young women.

HH adds: When JBU left Mrs Heene's apt she moved just a short distance up Hessler Road to be with Jeanne Campbell and the two Krickbaum sisters, Mary and Ruth.  We stopped several years ago to visit them in Canton, Ohio, neither having married.  At some point JBU and JS moved down to 101st Street and they had some new roommates.

I would worry from the picture that I might be leg-less, but there is a tiny bit of evidence that I have toes.  Life appears even then to be fairly serious – I was probably concerned about  future responsibilities.

Or possibly Catherine's parents are saying "she's so good, let's have 4 more babies!" to which Catherine can only glare and hope for the best....you have held up fairly well in the chaos created by your siblings! :)

HH adds even more: Catherine, that is a serious picture of you in the blog. Sure glad that you have thrived in overcoming life's many challenges. Believe there is a saying that less muscles are involved in smiling than the serious pose.

Most of Peaches library work was at the East Cleveland North Branch on Hayden Road. In May 2010 Serena joined us in staying in Cleveland, while I went to the annual OSBA meeting. We drove by that library branch , which had been closed because of lack of funds, at least that is what they told us at the main East Cleveland Library. The meeting rotates from Cleveland (again 2013), Cincinnati was 2012, and Columbus the year before. May go again this May as my liability insurance comes with a coupon good for $250 toward the registration fee. Unfortunately, JBU was mentally slipping then.
