1970 Catherine's Letter & Schedule -Oct.5

Monday---October 5, 1970

Dear Mother, Daddy, Serena, John and Mary,

Hi!  It was quite a surprise to get the quick service on the letter and the package both of which arrived about 8:30 this morning.  It is nice having a few more clothes to select from although I notice a couple of skirts should be shortened -- too bad I didn't check sooner so you could have something to do, Mom!  Hopefully I'm capable of doing it myself.

Thanks too for the library school stuff.  I know a couple people who are in the library school at Western.  They accept people four times a year.  Every day that I get through here is one closer to something else so I better give it some thought.

Would you believe I cut my hair about four inches?  I really did.  I decided to get it all trimmed even so I had a good inch taken off the sides and about four off the back.  It really does look alot shorter.  I haven't quite gotten used to it yet.

Thanks for the info on the Waters VW.  Would it be possible for you to call Tolle's and see how much they want for it?  We've been checking up on newspaper ads and various camper and/or car dealers around here.

TUESDAY

As I didn't get this finished yesterday I thought maybe I would try writing a little more today.  I went over to WMU this afternoon and believe it or not the Red Cross decided to take a pint of my blood.  I found out the secret of getting my temperature and blood pressure up is to peddle up hill on a bicycle in high gear for about 15 minutes, and then run inside thinking very exciting thoughts to keep them both up long enough to get it recorded.  It worked too.  The temperature was 98 and the blood pressure was 104/67!

No, I haven't heard or seen anything concerning my bicycle.  I'm still trying to figure out who it was that called you.  What did they tell you?  I had no identification on the bicycle nor was it registered with the school (since they don't have such a thing as bicycle registration) or the police (although they do).  So who or why was it somebody called you?  At least I can use Debby's since she is in New York.  Today was the first time I used it though.

My financial condition is OK.  Just yesterday I put $36.25 in my savings account and collected my lat quarter's interest of $2.56.  Like I said, it will be awhile yet before I'll be able to live off my interest regardless of how frugal I am.  I've heard rumors that the school was going to start paying $1.65 an hour instead of $1.45 but I've also heard that it may not go into affect until spring.  When we first came it was $1.10 so it has gone up about the same proportion as tuition.  Only it seems to be a much smaller scale!

Thanks for Roberta's address.  I don't know how soon I'll be able to write to her, oh, I could probably send her a postcard if I get around to buying some more stamps.  Anyway, you could give her my regards, also to Grandma, Joe, et.al.

Love,
Catherine

1990 Roberta's Letter -Oct.5

[10-5-90]

Hi Travellers!

How are the time zones / body clocks doing these days??  I can't imagine losing & gaining a whole day!  It makes the 3 hour change between here & Ohio look like nothing.

I'm enclosing my flights -- I feel very lucky to have gotten both for $338 -- esp. since a regular price would be $378 for 1 Round Trip!  Maybe I can get some postcards in Detroit & MPLS/St.Paul!  I only have a lifetime supply now.

We have 3 people right now -- very SICK -- including Jim -- who thinks that when he is watching T.V. the people on the screen can see him -- so he gets all dressed up!  As the nurse says it is either his medicine or his disease.

Thought this card very appropriate for you all & your recent travels!  But is it a Christmas card?  Have you heard Dr. Dobson -- mental illness programs this week?

Love,
Roberta, Sid & of course B.B.

1980 Family Letter -Oct.7

Tuesday --
October 7, 1980
Dearest Family --

We did have a nice weekend in Chicago with Serena and wish that we could have stayed longer for had to leave right after having dinner with her but did have a good visit.  Thought especially about Roberta when we ate at the Khyber India which was real close by.  But the food was pretty hot even for Dad and we kept the waiter busy with the water pitcher.  We had heard you could order it mild or spicy or in-between but neglected to ask.  Looked over the Loyola library afterwards and then back to 777 Michigan Avenue where Imperial Smelting was our host.

Thought about John celebrating his 23rd birthday and wish we could have been on hand too but know he wasn't by himself.  Anxious to hear what celebrating they did -- looking forward to hearing soon.

Saturday morning after a stop at the Loyola bookstore (Dad went back to library) we headed north to Serena's bank and also found a nice girl's bike at a shop not far from her apartment -- not new but a good used one which someone had bought but was too big for them so got a smaller bike.  It has coaster brakes and balloon tires but looks almost brand new.  She plans to invest in a back pack.  We have had some around here at home but only one I found was a flimsy small one so she'll probably buy a good one.

We had lunch at one of the "Lettuce Entertain You" restaurant chain this one in Evanston called "Fritz is It" or some similar title.  (Last time ate in one not too far from Serena's place called "Johnathan Seafood" -- both good and very unusual.)  First time I can ever remember seeing so much caviar and fresh fruit at the salad bar.

Did a little other shopping and then ate quickly at 777 to get to the Drury theater by 7PM to see "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it on the Road" starring Phyllis Newman.  It is a good musical but some of the language got a little grating used over and over -- basically a woman's lib theme -- manager doesn't want singer using her own material or admitting that she is celebrating her 40th birthday, etc.  Had heard about it on Phil Donahue's show including some of the music so knew a little about it.

Sunday we went to church at the University of Chicago's Rockefeller Chapel but amazed again at the vastness and cold-Cathedral like structure though beautiful.  Hannah Hunt the head of Univ. of Chicago did read the scripture and interesting just to see her after hearing about her - the first woman provost of such a large university.  Realized later that it was World Communion Sunday but this wasn't mentioned.  They were having lunch on the lawn afterwards to which we were invited but declined.

We did go to the only Mobil Guide recommended restaurant on the side of Chicago called the Court House which we found served only brunch from10:30 til 2:30 so had plenty of time there.  One unusual feature was the big basket of orange halves with two squeezers which were constantly being used by the patrons and another was the chocolate bottomed croissants -- delicious baked goodies, fresh fruit, fish, salmon and bagels (thought about Carol) and the more usual scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon, soufflé and bread pudding.  And a salad bar too.  And lots of cheeses.

We dropped Serena off at the Howard El to take her back north and we headed south east and home.  We had planned to come by way of I-74 but found that exit closed so took off cross country for awhile but eventually got on it.

Mary Virginia had gotten along fine but hadn't had the best weather either for the ball game which they had won or for the trip to King's Island with five others.  Weather did clear but was coldish but price of $3.50 compliments of Cincinnati Milacron via Dale Howard to softball team was very reasonable.  She said they had the fireworks at 9PM so came home after that.  She stayed with the Hannahs.

She also had several pieces of bad news.  Donald Watters' brother Harold who also lives in NV had been killed in truck accident on Friday AM -- we had been rerouted because of it (near children's home).  And also on Saturday Terry Carey was fatally injured in an accident near State routes 73 and 729.  Some say Terry had swerved to keep from hitting a dog and ran head on into Violet Kuntz' husband.  Barely know him to see him but Vi has been at the New Vienna bank since Vera Baker left and they live in the second house on left in Snow Hill Meadows the subdivision just on the edge of NV toward Hillsboro.  His condition was serious but they now say good and think that he will make it.

Hope that this letter reaches Madras before G'ma and Roberta have left but will try to reach you all by phone Saturday morning anyway.  This is the only Saturday this month that MV doesn't have a band contest or something going on -- had thought about going to Newark but also realized that Monday is a bank holiday so imagine they have other plans -- to go to Erie or Ravenna or someplace or possibly have company in Newark.  There are so many things going on this fall up thru the middle of Nov.

Dad did have a call from Kim in Korea and wants a letter from us saying that Mie Young is needed to speak at a church meeting -- only way she can be allowed out of Korea.  He has her ticket bought but we are to say that her transportation will be paid by or church, etc.  They (Korean government) don't know that he has a US passport which she plans to use once she gets out of Korea as she is only allowed a 30 day visa.  With the way things are in Korea wonder if he just wants her out of there and maybe the rest of the family at other places though they don't have dual citizenships.

We had a pretty heavy frost Sunday night and so the garden is fast going, though I was able to pick more tomatoes, a couple of real small zucchini and over a pint of red raspberries.  The broccoli will last a little longer.

Back to the Loyola Library which is a great place with four floors, and annual reports on some 1000 companies from 1972 on.  Glad that Serena enjoys her work and the people that she works with there in the library.

Just returned from the Mother's Club guest night -- dinner at Washington C.H.  We all ate too much.  The speaker spoke on "Sound" from the invention of the telephone, the radio, T.V., etc., etc. and had taped messages of "highlights" in the news, i.e. when Edward VII (?) abdicated for Wally Simpson, F.D.R. when he said to the effect, "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself" and JFK "don't ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country".  The speaker was a member of the 3C Toastmaster Club in Wilmington and they are looking for programs to give.  That is a talent to keep an audience interested.

We have been thinking today of Grandma and Roberta going north to Oregon.  Note that Phoenix is still having 100º plus days.  We are anxious to hear about all the activities on the western front.  How did the vegetables arrive?  (Sorry about the spelling [most of which are typed over] for my fingers do not coordinate with my thoughts and/or vice versa.)

Hard to believe that the Election is just four weeks away.  The paper tonight had a big section on "Christmas Layaways".

[Love, etc.]

1970 Roberta's Letter -Oct.6

Oct. 6, 1970

Dear Family,

Thank you so much for your letter today.  I guess Body Mechanics is a conditioning course.  We have been doing the "President's Physical Fitness" test.  It is pretty hard.

We can sit where-ever we want to in all of our classes.  Most of my classes have about 15-20 people in them.  My U.S. History class is bigger tho, and also my Bible Literature class.  It has about 80 kids in it but for discussion we break up into groups of about 10 people or less.  Right now we are studying Mark.  There is SO much in it!

I changed from Nutrition to Sociology.  I didn't want to take Nutrition in the 1st place.  Wonder why I signed up for it.

I've seen "Wells" jacks in 2 stores in Newberg.  But no jump-ropes so far.

This week-end or next I am to go into Portland with a girl named Pam Hawks.  It costs $1.05 one way into Portland.  They have old buses that go about every 1½ hours.  Pam is from Tacoma, Washington.  She went to school last year at Multnomah Bible School in Portland.  We will be staying there at the school.

I'll be including a letter from Mrs. Hinerman, I got it today.

It wouldn't be too bad to have a bike here.  I guess the town is building an inside pool about a mile from here.  It will be pay so much every time & it will be done in late November!!

I'm not sure about Governor McCall.  He spoke here at the school, you know.  He's a BIG tall man.

Food is not bad.  About 3 choices on salad, vegetable, 2 kinds of soups.  2 or 3 kinds of main meats.  All kinds of desserts -- fresh fruit, canned fruit, ice cream, pie, cake, cookies, etc.

No Arby's or Burger Chef here that I've seen.  Colonel Sanders here do sell Ham & Roast beef along with Chicken.

I've bought me a cheap blanket, cheap is the word -- the 1st one had holes in it.  Second one was OK though.  I want to get one of those nice skinny blankets.  Remember -- they're sort of expensive.

Mary bought us bedspreads at an import store where she used to work.  They are Indian bedspreads.  Not Red-skins -- you know from India.  I paid her for mine.  $6.00 -- can't beat that.

We've got to buy rugs -- floor is COLD!!  By the way, her towels are just like mine.  Except green -- two shades.

Well, I've really got to go.

Love,
Roberta

1990 Catherine's Letter -Oct.4

10-4-90

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  It was good talking to you this morning.  Glad you're safely back.  We'll be anxious to hear more details of your trip.

I'm enclosing a copy of the flyer I did on the computer for Best West.  They are also sending a letter with it to a customer list about 1200 people they had done business with at Robert Crist.  The bookkeeping was much less time consuming the second month -- it helps to know what you're doing!

Hopefully you will hear from Wendy soon.  She's been babysitting every afternoon this week.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

Oct. 2 [1970]

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN!

Classes are going pretty well.  I'm working 10 hr. at the library, too.  I'll send you a schedule soon.  Did Dad go to Milwaukee?  I don't know what happened to the bike except it isn't here.  I have a Dr. appointment for October 21.  Academically I think this quarter should be better than last -- at least I'm trying to make it better.  I'm waiting for the library material, clothes, & to hear about Waters VW van.  Also would just like to hear from you!

1970 Roberta's letter to John -Oct.1

Oct 1, 1970

Dear John,

Thank you very much for your letter.  I don't think I'd be able to tell you if there ever was a riot here.  Cause I'd be in a state of shock!

We have been having freshman initiation. I'll include our list of rules & regulations that we were suppose to follow.  They are stupid.  Like we are suppose to carry an umbrella -- it it's raining we must carry it closed, but if it's not raining we must carry them open.  Crazy, huh?

I hope you write again.  Tell Mary Virginia "Hi".  Tell her she better write me.  You could also tell Serena that.

Your bicycle sounds pretty nice.  Can I have your old one?  I do wish that I did have a bike out here.

Well.  Be good and tell everyone I said Hello.  Write Again!!

Love,
Roberta

Another post card for a post card.  About five of us are going into Portland tonight to go to a shopping center and shop.  Also we'll go ice skating.  There's a rink inside the shopping center.  It's a mall.  Everything is fine with me.  Still no word about my job (?).

1960 Catherine's Early Memories

The First Thing I Remember

Several years ago my mother and father spent two months in Europe.  While they were there my sister and I stayed on a farm with friends of my parents.

On the farm there were cows, chickens, and an old barn that we were told never to go near because it might cave in on top of us.  Of course, this was our favorite place to play.

Every morning and evening the cows were milked.  This was especially fun because we sometimes got to try the milking ourselves.  Although the first few times usually ended in disaster, by the time we went home we were professional milkers.

Every cow had a name and we had a personal conversation with each every time they were milked.

The part I enjoyed the most was the grinding of the feed.  I always had a desire to jump in with the corn, get ground up, put in a sack and then surprise my parents when they came home.

My favorite pastime was sitting on the tractor and pretending I could drive.  I did this for hours on end and made several interesting trips around the world.  I was devoured by cannibals, squashed in an elephant stampede, and murdered by a tribe of wild Indians.

Every morning it was my duty to gather the eggs which usually numbered between one and two dozen.  I had my own special basket which I always used.  One morning after I had reached the barn I realized I had forgotten my basket.  I should have known then I was headed for trouble, but I didn't bother to think twice.  I proceeded to gather the eggs and put them in my pockets.  At the time I considered myself lucky to have such big pockets.  When I got back to the house, got scolded, and saw what a mess I had made I wished I hadn't had any pockets at all.

1980 Family Letter -Sep.30

Tuesday --
September 30, 1980

Dearest Family --

Wanted to get this letter started in time for G'ma to take it to Roberta when she leaves tomorrow so hopefully starting it now we should have a page written by tomorrow.  It was nice having talked to all of you over the weekend -- Catherine and Wendy Friday morning, Serena Saturday morning and Roberta Sunday afternoon plus John and Carol in person all weekend.  They came and met us at the chili supper at East Clinton.  We got down to the field just in time to see the band and the Homecoming ceremonies including the floats.  Ruby and Squeek's [I never knew (or had long forgotten) that David Henderson's nickname was "Squeek" if that is who we are referring to here] daughter, Judy Henderson, was the junior attendant.  John got to see some people he hadn't seen for awhile but both of them helped carry things left from the chili supper to sell at the ball game -- pies and quarts of chili.  MV helped tear down the class float afterwards so didn't get in too early.

MV and Carol went shopping in Wilmington Saturday afternoon as MV had decided to go to the Homecoming Dance and needed something new to wear for Saturday night -- she did get a real pretty outfit -- plaid (or rather varied color squares) skirt, brown jacket, tan blouse, maroon sweater and her first heels (high platform sandals).

Saturday afternoon Dad flew back from Dallas and so we did have one meal with him (MV had to play with the band in a parade in Jamestown).  John and Carol went down to New Vienna's Octoberfest -- a gospel quartet from Dayton and a short Message from the minister of the Corner Chapel -- all this down by the gazebo followed by square dancing in the street.  We waited til MV had left but the music was so loud we never did go to see the dancing -- met John and Carol at G'ma's and just talked there for awhile and came home.

Sunday there was no Sunday School at our church but a combined service of both along with a picnic at Ft. Ancient at 11 AM.  Had about 70 there, and it was a great day for a picnic.  Afterwards some 20 of us went on a hike which turned out to be strenuous down to the river and back up again, seemed about a 75º angle.  At the bottom we walked along the old railroad right-a-way, which was level.  Grandma went with us and John and Carol took good care of her, taking in the museum and look out.  We had no trouble sleeping right thru Sunday night.

Saturday night was cool enough we had a fire in the grate.  With the cutting of the trees across the street we have plenty of firewood for the winter.  After all the hot weather we are ready for some cooler weather.

Grandma had a letter from Joe and he is going to arrange his schedule to fit in with her plans so she won't have to rush back to be here by the 15th.  the reality of life is that no matter what date one comes up with, there is always some conflict.

Just got back from the nominating committee meeting at the Church for the 1981 year.  The quarterly conference is Oct. 16th -- we are to be the host church for the meeting with Martinsville joining us.  A week ago Sunday we had a mission night at Church with the Fairview minister and his family having the program, who are natives of India and had also served as missionaries in Jamaica.  For refreshments it was native food -- yes, just fruit, which was a pleasant surprise.  The Harners were in charge.  (Don't see how they keep w/2 churches.) Mary Virginia has gone square dancing tonight and still seems to be enjoying it.  Tuesday night is the lesson class (which we still need) and Thursday night is the class (for the graduates) night.  It is a great night if you don't weaken.  Hate to see conflicts w/Tuesday night lessons which we have for the next three weeks but later on is when it will be more crucial.  The Ganos and Walls (Raymond) never did get started and MV said that the Don Bernards weren't there last night (now Wed.) but hope they do continue.  The Harners wanted us to go to Washington Court House for lessons which are on Sunday nights and begin (and end) earlier in the evening but haven't convinced Dad that is a good time.  With MV going on Tuesdays it is a little foolish.  I'm not too comfortable with the graduates on Thursdays.  The trip to Gatlinburg with the group should be interesting.  We had planned to go by bus but the increased fare caused us to decide on private cars.  There's about 40 of us going there -- most of them the old pros.  That's the 31 Oct. - Nov. 2.

Looking forward to seeing Serena this weekend but also thinking especially of John on the celebration of his 23rd birthday on the 4th.

MUCH LOVE

1980 Catherine's Letter -Sep.29

September 29, 1980

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  Sorry it has been so long between letters.  Things have calmed down a little since Wendy's birthday is over for another year.  She certainly is enjoying the tapes and the books.  She listens to at least part of the tape almost every day.  It's almost like you were here talking to her -- she thinks it's real neat.  And she enjoys the music, too, Mary.  The only song she recognized immediately was Happy Birthday but the others will become more familiar to her.  The songs she knows from school are B-I-N-G-O, Twinkle twinkle little star, Row your boat, etc.

It was nice having two days off, actually three, this weekend.  I got the weekly type housework and laundry done on Friday and on Saturday I got all the windows washed, the sheer curtains cleaned and part of the others I wiped off the plastic lining -- three more to go to be finished with that job.  Not what I would call a fun job but something I'd rather have done than think about having to do.  This next weekend Gerry will have Saturday off so we may try to do something a little more special.

Serena called again on Saturday afternoon and we had a lengthy conservation, rather a conversation.  Wendy even talked to her.  She told Serena that she likes to go to school and to go to places to eat and she got toys for her birthday.  We'll be anxious to hear how your weekend in Chicago is and what you do while there.  I forgot to ask when you were leaving but it occurred to me that you might be gone when I usually call on Friday morning.  In case I do miss you I'll try again next week.

Wendy is almost done eating her breakfast, then I need to hang out a load of clothes, and we will be ready to leave for school and work.  Hopefully we will have time to walk today but if time runs short we can ride the bike.  I am able to park the bike in the back room at work which is nice because there is really nothing outside to chain it to and I know it is safe when it is inside.

I'm sure I'll think of lots of other things I should have included in this letter after it is mailed but I do want to get it off today so you'll get it before you leave for Chicago.

I noticed something you sent us had a different P.O. Box.  Have I been using the wrong one?

Love,

Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

P.S. I ate the last peach today.

1990 John's Letter -Sep.27

Sept. 27, 1990

Dear Mom & Dad,

Welcome home!  I have missed you both.  Thanks for your postcard from Shanghai -- and thank you for birthday card and check.  I appreciate it very much.  I will probably use it to buy some much needed clothes.

If it works out with your schedule, I am still planning to meet you in Columbus Saturday afternoon Oct. 6th.  Just let me know where.  I am going to try to visit a Grace Brethren pastor and his wife, the Immels in London, OH that evening or the next day -- Sunday Oct. 7th.

Julie is planning to come to Newark Oct 12-14.  I really miss her.  We haven't made any commitments but I think we might get married next year.  I want to leave it in the Lord's hands -- especially the timing.  I love her and have great respect for her.  She has a heart that really seeks after God's best.  I'll keep you posted.

Julie and I plan to travel to Chicago the weekend of November 10-11 to visit International Teams in Prospect Heights.  I want Julie to see their home office and meet Glenn Schuman, who I would work for.

Guess what?  I have a contract to sell my house.  Closing is tentatively set for Nov. 30 and I must vacate by Dec 20.  I don't know where I'll move to, but I will probably rent a small apt or try to house sit for someone over the winter.

How do you like my stationary?  It didn't seem right to throw a good sheet of paper away.  Be sure to tell Grandma I am still following her example.  Give Grandma my love.

Look forward to seeing you Oct. 6th and hearing about your trip.

Love,

John

1970 Roberta's Letter & Newberg newspaper -Sept.

The Newberg Graphic: the only newspaper in the whole wide world that really cares about Newberg.  Thursday, September 24, 1970

[Undated]

Dear Family,

It's now 7:45 and I just got back from breakfast.  My first class isn't till 10:00 today.  And believe it or not -- I've got all my home-work done.

Yesterday I went downtown to buy a blanket.  Well -- I bought one, but when I got back to the school and opened it up -- there were weak spots in it where the threads all came undone.  (It was a thermal blanket)  So today I'm going to take it back.

I also bought a paper downtown -- which was printed last Thursday.  It's a weekly paper.

My room-mate has strep throat.  I've had a cold but I'm getting over it.  Mary is still in the room but she can't go to classes or anything.

It's now a little after 12:00 -- lunch time almost.  I just got the mail and got the camera.  Thanks alot.  I just got it in time for some funny pictures.  Freshman are having orientation.

Mary -- my room-mate has gone home.  I'm not sure how long or if and when she'll be back.

I've already dropped one class in exchange for another.  I dropped Accounting for U.S. History.  You should have heard the accounting teacher the very first day in class.  After the class I told him I hadn't had any high school accounting.  He said then it would take an awful lot of time and would be awful hard.  So I went to the Registrar and had to pay $2.00 so I could change into U.S. History.

I've just now come back from lunch and after lunch went to check my mailbox and got a letter from John!

I'm not going to be able to get a job thru the school.  In fact, I guess there are kids who really need a job to pay for tuition and there weren't enough jobs.

There are 467 students.  15% increase over last year!  Mercy

I've taken pictures already with my camera.  They are of my  3  friends -- Melody, Pam & Judy.  Judy has a car, so does Melody -- but she never has any gas money!

Last Saturday evening after the banquet Judy, Melody, Pam & I went into Portland.  We saw the "Peoples Fountain" -- it's right across from the Civic-Convention Center or whatever.  We also went to some high places where you could look down and see Portland and also Vancouver Washington.

Well -- I've got to go.  Do write!

Love,
Roberta

1970 Catherine's Posstcard -Sep.26

Sept. 26, 1970

Hi!  It was good to come home and find some mail -- especially those grades 'cause I was pretty worried about them.  If I keep trying in German I may graduate yet!  Glad to hear Roberta got off -- what's her address?  Mine starting Monday will be 101B DeWaters.  Thanks for sending my mail to John -- although there is an address here no mail comes because it goes to Dick's mother in Clio.  We've had a really good vacation and I sort of dread going back to school.

We've been fishing about every day especially while we were up by Oscoda [in Michigan on Lake Huron].  I've only caught two fish altogether that were big enough to keep but Dick catches more so we have had some fish to eat and there are some in the freezer now.

Is the Waters VW still for sale?  We've been to innumerable trailer sales and seen all sorts of livable but expensive stuff.  We almost have to get something used (new Ford camper vans cost between $3-5000) and a van may be the best thing to start with.  Let me know about the Waters, OK?

I'm looking forward to getting the librarian stuff.  Is there a school in Southern Calif.?  I didn't understand the reference to my bike in your letter but maybe I'll find out when I get back to school.

I have gotten a good start on the reading for my classes already.  The books we're reading in German are really good.  Some I've already read in Eng. like All Quiet on the Western Front, by Remarque, Siddharta by Hesse and a story by Thomas Mann.  Mann and Hesse are about my favorite authors.  I think the Old Testament course will be the most difficult.

I've got to go to the bank now to cash the Mohasco check so I'll have some money to pay for the key deposit, buy books, etc. when I get back to school.

Love, Catherine

1970 Roberta's Letter & George Fox invoice -Sep.27

[Note:  George Fox (1624-1691) was the founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers or Friends.  George Fox College was founded in 1891.  In 1986 the enrollment was 549.  Roberta is the only noted former student that I know personally.]

Sept. 27, 1970

Dear Family,

We just got back from the beach.  Um -- cold!  Tho there were some that did go in swimming.  We went to a place called "Twin Rocks", according to my Atlas, a town of 200 people.

Right outside the city limits is a Quaker Church Camp where we had a worship service and also ate our lunch.  "Twin Rocks" is in "Tillamook" County.

After lunch we went to the ocean which was right across the road.  We could do anything we wanted to do till 6:00 - supper.  A bunch of us walked down the ocean side.  "Twin Rocks" got its name by twin rocks being in the water.  They were big, enormous things standing beside each other.  They were almost identical.  We got there by 4 big buses owned by the school.  We left at 8:00 this morning ad didn't get back til 9:30 p.m. tonight.  I'm tired!

I'm scheduled to take 1) Body mechanics, 2) English, 3) Nutrition, 4) Lit of Bible, and 5) Practical Accounting.

I really wanted to take economics instead of accounting but it didn't work out.  If I do good in accounting, I think I will go to a business school next year.  I really don't know tho.

Daddy, included you will find my balance of everything which is now $00.00.  I had to pay $12.00 before yesterday at 4:00 p.m.

Tomorrow I'm going to buy my books.

I'll wait til after the mail comes in before I mail this.

I did get a post-card from you all.  Thanks.  I've bought all my books but one -- which hasn't come in yet.  My books cost me $47.00!  I'll have to buy a regulation white blouse and regulation gym shorts.

For now I'm in pretty good financial shape.  I've got $50.00 here and $100.00 in the bank in Newberg.

OH.  Saturday nite we had to go to a banquet.  Some of the ladies & students had on long dresses (Formals).  We had to go through a line and smile, shake hands, and say "how do you do?"  We had to do this to about 20 people!  Everyone was real dressed up!  I wore my new blue suit.  And my loafers!  My new green shoes didn't go with the blue suit!

I had to buy a "Harper Study Bible" for $9.95.  We have a nice book store, etc.  It is pretty big for a small school.

I've got to go.  Do write.

Love,

Roberta

I'll find out about the telephone # and switch-board.

Breakfast 7:15-7:30

1990 MV's Letter -Sep.25

 9-25-90

Dear Mom & Dad --

Welcome Back!  Not knowing exactly when you'll arrive, I hope this letter arrives there before you.  Hope you had a good trip and enjoyed Elderhostel once again.  I heard an ad on Public Radio the other day that there would be an informational meeting on Elderhostel in Lexington . . . .

Well, the interview in Somerset went pretty well last week.  I was the 4th of 5 to be interviewed (the 5th interviewed 9-23).  The Staff-Parish Committee will be meeting this coming Sunday to make the decision.  It was the first interview I had been to where they videotaped it!  There were 2 members who were out of town for some of the interviews, so supposedly everyone gets an equal chance that way.  It will be nice to know one way or the other.

My job at Shakertown is going well.  Next week I will work on Monday also to fill in for the other girl who sings.  It is an easy job; at 11, 1, 2, 3, 4 I sing and do a 10 minute presentation on Shaker worship.  The rest of the day (9:30-6:00) I just have to greet visitors who wander in.  There is a large closet with a window off the side of the meeting room where I can sit and do whatever.  Because the meeting room is large, it's easy to hear the big door open (it echoes) when someone does come in.

Friday we are going to Georgia with Cathy & Jay (our "boarder" & fiance) as they have some social events to attend.  We will stay in Macon Friday night and then Saturday go on down to Moultrie for a shower & a dinner party in their honor.  We should be home Sunday evening.

The team meetings have been a lot of fun; with the two that were on Sunday, I was exhausted having worked 6 days then to drive to Wilmington & back seemed longer than usual.  Unless something changes, I am sure this will be the last time I do a team at home.  It is simply too draining physically with 5 hours on the road.

Don is enjoying his classes, especially preaching.  He doesn't complain about the reading he has to do for it!  He's also taking U.M. Theology, Servant as Teacher and  ?  (I can't remember the other).  It doesn't seem possible that Christmas is only 3 months away!  We are talking about flying to Texas for the holidays, but not knowing whether we'll be in Somerset or   ?   we won't be making plans for another couple weeks at least.

Don said Serena called last night while I was at work and talked for about 45 minutes.  We haven't heard a thing from J.B. or the Morgans.  Roberta called a couple weeks ago to see if she could send me panty hose.  A few days later a big box (probably 50-75 prs of hose) arrived -- all Q's, which I will pass on to Serena.

We did go out to lunch with the Hortons & Grandma after doing the service in New Vienna.  That van is terrible on gas mileage.  I couldn't believe how quickly it went.  I suppose the chair-lift is so heavy that it really cuts down on the mileage.

Did I tell you I got elected to the Board of Directors for Lexington Emmaus?  My first board meeting (end of Aug) lasted 4 hours!  I thought it would never be over.  I was secretly thankful when I had to work last night so I didn't have to go.  My responsibilities are Music & Entertainment:  getting music for gatherings, sponsors hour, Candlelight, Closing & Entertainment for Saturday Night Dinner during the Walks.  I'm trying to get a few months ahead on music for the gatherings -- This fall we had to move our walks from the Methodist Home in Versailles.  The building we had been using was closed by the Fire Marshall.  That means the cost will now be approximately $80 in order to have it anywhere else.  There are no local churches that have facilities to accommodate a walk.

We took the Honda in for the 30,000 mile check up a couple weeks ago -- we did not anticipate the extra work on the brakes -- they had been squeaking badly.  Another mechanic had told me that it was caused by a glaze on the rotors which often happens on Hondas.  We're trying to get a duplicate title for Don's car from Oklahoma -- somewhere in the move to Kentucky the original was lost.  🙁 Oklahoma wants an arm & a leg for a duplicate, but if we want to sell it or get plates, we will have to pay up.  I can't believe anyone could lose something so important.

Hope you found the tape of the worship service on the table.  We accidentally left the remainder of the milk and a piece of chicken in the fridge.  I'm sure both are spoiled by now.

With the cooler weather, it is taking ingenuity to stay warm at Shakertown.  They haven't turned on the furnace and my costume is very light weight.  On the bottom I wear long johns & 2 pairs of socks but with the round neckline, even a t-shirt or anything shows.  I've been trying to think of some way to keep the top warm.  I bring my lunch, as they have a microwave and a fridge available.  We are allowed to eat at the "Summer Kitchen" (Sandwich Shop) but the prices are exorbitant!

You all are welcome to come visit anytime.  I sing on Tuesdays and Thursdays; (and) the ladies that work here are very nice.  The only part I don't like is this costume we have to wear.  Call when you get home.  Welcome Back!

Love,

M.V. and Don

1970 Roberta's Letter -September

In September 1970, Roberta enrolled at George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon.

[Undated, but probably from mid-September, 1970.]

Dear Family,

Yesterday I went downtown, into Newberg.  It is simply one main street which goes down about 10 blocks.  There is a Sears & Montgomery Wards mail order places.  Also a Penney's store -- about the size of the one in Washington, C.H.

I checked the banks out and the rates are both the same.  I decided not to start a checking account!  Low cost checking account 12¢ per check -- but you can't write more than 15 checks a month.  I put $100.00 in Savings Account -- but if you make more than  3  withdrawals in less than 90 days it cost 50¢ for a withdrawal.  If I want to withdraw more than 3 times, I'll just take it all out and start a new account.  Umm --

Today we are taking more tests.  ACT tests.  A bunch of kids got out of it because they already had taken it.

Newberg has 5,200 people -- according to the sign below the Corp. limit.

I may not be able to get a job because of some Gov't something.  Also you're suppose to be in desperate need of it.  Anyway, I'm suppose to go see the financial aid man after I get my schedule -- which will be Saturday morning.  Oh, well.

I just got back from my mail box.  I got your post-card.  Thanks alot.

This Oregon life is Cold!

Last night we had a tour or what-ever of the library.  It is very nice.  They have a special "Quaker Room" -- wonder why??

Well.  I've got to go.

Love,

Roberta

1980 Family Letter -Sep.23

Tuesday --
Sept. 23, 1980
Dearest Family -

Today is Wendy's third birthday and how we wish we could be with her to celebrate the occasion!  It is good to talk to her on the phone but the visit in August was so good and we'll cherish those memories.  Wish her picture with her Dad didn't have those yellow lines on it for think it is so good.  We plan to call this evening but will understand if they aren't home.

Enjoyed talking to Serena Saturday on the phone and making our plans to go to Chicago on Oct. 3 for the weekend -- we had thought she might rather meet us someplace else to get out of the "windy city" but there is much to do there and guess she prefers to not travel.  Hope that Dad can get one of the Imperial Smelting apartments.

Grandma shared a letter she got from Roberta yesterday and their plans are finalizing for Grandma's arrival on October 1st.  Wish we could see the senior center and their new home too but may get out there before 1981.  They plan to visit the Morgans the weekend of Oct. 10-13 or so but I am sure they will be letting them know more definitely before that time -- hope I have those dates right.

Looking forward to having John and Carol here this weekend -- Mary Virginia saw them last night briefly at the Gaither [?] concert in Columbus -- Dad won't be back til Saturday as he has a trip to Dallas so will be coming back Saturday afternoon -- could have come Friday but was able to save over $100 by staying til Saturday.  Friday night is EC's Homecoming, the Bandboosters Chili Supper and also the night the Republicans are honoring Harsha.  So there are two places we should be but plan to go to Lees Creek.

It is now Wednesday and we did get to talk to Wendy and her mother last night.  She talks so plainly (Wendy, that is for we know that Catherine talks plainly).  Granddaddy was really impressed with her, "Hello, Granddaddy".

Finally got to the restaurant that both Roberta and John had recommended -- Houston Supper Club near Mason, Ohio -- last Sunday.  They do have a most impressive salad bar.  Vivian Cochran has been there was telling about it Friday at the SOS class meeting - luncheon.  We saw quite a few from Clinton County that we knew -- Clarence Sheeter among others.

I have devotions for the Woman's Club meeting today and found that book that you gave us most helpful, Roberta.  It really has good illustrations -- 7700 which covers most every topic.

Joellen Uhl used the Country Inns book that you Morgans gave us and said that all the recommendations that she used held up to her expectations.  We haven't seen her but MV did so anxious to hear more about her trip to New England -- all by herself.

Really sorry to hear about William Wesley's dog bite -- but glad to hear he is much better now.  That was a freak accident.  I'm sure our family remembers several dog bites from the paper carrier days but none so bad that hospitalization was necessary.

Mary Virginia seems to be enjoying the square dancing lessons this time around and we are keeping up so far at least.  Tim and Tina Larrick seem to catch on quickly.  We were also happy to have Don and Martha Ann Bernard show up last night.  We tried to get them interested last year but Martha Ann thought it would be too much for Don.  We had thought that George and Betty Gano might start but they have had a good excuse each time so far.  Jennifer is expecting a baby any time now and they are taking care of her little girl.  Someone told us that than Edna and Ray Walls would like to take lessons but they had revival services last week and couldn't get them on the phone yesterday.

At Judy Clay's suggestion we went to the Church of Christ revival services here in town but though we enjoyed the music, the evangelist really blasted other churches and their beliefs -- especially non-immersion.  To top it off I had promised Carol Wise to go to the airport with her to pick up Jim.  So had to walk out so am sure that they thought we were upset.  Jim's plane got in at 10:55 PM.  We were glad that he and his parents got to the East Mesa Senior Center and also to your house, Roberta.  That was Friday.

Saturday we went to Xenia for the East Clinton band was marching in the Old Fashioned Day parade (1½ hours long) and that evening there was a band demonstration -- about 10 bands took part.  East Clinton was one of the smallest (both in size of band and school) but did real well.  They are also taking part in two competitions -- one at Miami Trace and another at Glen Este (suburb of Cincinnati).  This Saturday they are marching in a parade at Jamestown.

I found the directions that Mrs. Thornburg had given me to send to you, Roberta for the purse so will try to send it out with G'ma among some other things like pictures we took this summer.

Serena, Dad says that he called and got the only apartment they had left which is the one on Michigan Avenue -- 777 which has many advantages.  Do you want us to bring over any food?  We got some more lamb from the Keltners [Kentners? some letters are typed over] -- and have been enjoying Hubbard squash from Clyde Irwins -- they don't seem to like them and haven't been using them at all.  We have plenty of the little tomatoes (bigger than cherries but not very large at all) and also zucchini and some broccoli left in the garden but that's about it.  There are also some good apples and pears at the Wise which they aren't using and are good.  The apples taste like grimes golden.  Their trees have rally been loaded too this year.

Our grapes have been bearing for the first time this year -- they are white.  Grandma's aren't quite as plentiful but many people's are less productive this year.  Apples are very abundant.

We turned the furnace on this morning, so fall is officially here -- in more ways than one.  The women at the church have started having weekly get togethers to make things for the Christmas bazaar.  N.V. is having an October Fest this weekend (wonder about the name) but anyway it will start with services in the town park, then square dancing, etc. at 8:30 P.M.  The local tennis courts are finished as far as the paving, but no nets or fences (which we definitely need).

We did watch the debates [Ronald Reagen vs. Jimmy Carter] Sunday evening and wonder if the 2nd one will come off in Portland, Oregon?  Of local interest we have our Judge running for a seat in the new judicial district, then some of the "locals" hope to get his job.  That's life.

Love, [etc.]

1970 Roberta's Letter -Sep.23

Sept 23, 1970
[George Fox College, Newberg, Oregon]
Dear Everyone,

Hello There!  Well -- I just put away all of my suitcases.  It's now 8:30 - 11:30 p.m. -- Ohio time.  Oh, I'm tired.

What an orientation!  As of 9:00 tomorrow morning we will start taking tests!

It is sure cold here!  My lined C.P.O. sure felt good!

We stopped in Portland to buy a pillow.  I had to pay $7.00 for it.  Now all I need is 1) blankets, 2) pillow cover & case and 3) rugs.  Tonight I'm going to sleep in my long jeans!  I have a nice desk.

The desk has book shelves, above it and also a long bulletin board that runs the whole length of the bed and is about 2½ feet long.

Well.  Do write and I'll be writing you all.

Tell Grandma Hello for me.  I'll be sure and write her.

We have simply a beautiful view out of our windows.  The back half of the room is mostly window.  I'm on the 3rd floor!  How much would it cost to send my camera?

Lots of Love,
Roberta

1984 Elizabeth Johnson Letter to Roberta -Sep.20

Sept 20 [1984]
Dear Roberta & Sid,

I really enjoyed spending Aug. 19 with the Uibles.  Its always good to see you.  Thanks for your card from Hocking Hills.  The last time I was there was the summer of 1951.

Garnet Fisher & I go to visit the Fishers at Logan, Ohio quite often.  I spent last week end with Garnet down near Rocky Fork Lake.  I went to Sunday school & church first.  Got to meet the new preacher.  I came home Monday evening.

I enjoyed the Bus tour to the Ozarks Sept 5 thru 8.  Saw the Play Shepherd of the Hills, also toured St. Louis.  Mariann came & took me to lunch for my birthday. [Elizabeth was born Sept. 14, 1914, thus we know the year this letter was written.]  June is taking us all out to dinner Sat. night.  Friday 21st is Mariann's birthday.  She will be 32 this time.  I was 70.  I am slowing down a little.

Worked upstairs the past 3 days.  Got it all ready to close off for winter.

Luther Warren's marriage license was in yesterday's paper.  He is 93 and she 78 years.  I am invited to the wedding on Sept. 30.  It's at the Friends meeting house on the campus and we are invited to a sit down dinner afterwards at Prairie View.

Well must move along.  I have checks to bank and apples to make into dumplings for the freezer.

I am sorry we didn't get to the farm.  The Spurlocks are doing a really good job of taking care of the yard.  Everything looks neat & well cared for.  It would have been a good time for Sid to have seen it.

Love to you both,
Elizabeth

1980 Roberta's Letter -Sep.18

[9-18-80]
Thursday Night
Dear Family,

If I were really on the ball I would get this written and out to Rev. Wise to "special delivery" it to you all.  I understand that Mom and Dad are going down with his wife to pick him up at the airport.  Hope you didn't have to give up a square dance evening for the trip.

I didn't get it mentioned in Grandma's letter but both Marion and I have been busy trying to figure out the "ins and outs" of the new toy -- a Litton Microwave -- we had looked at the General Electric model that fits over the stove -- but they were very expensive -- plus a $60 installation charge.  The same model as the "spacesaver" put out by GE cost some $250 dollars less -- to just go on a counter.  The one we got is called the "Meal in One" -- its got alot of features -- that we need to learn how to use.  Right now Marion just gets upset with it all -- when she can't get it do do what she thinks it should do.

We did have some chicken in it tonight -- some we had left from the night before having done extra on the trill.  It was very good.  Also did baked potatoes -- which were far too well done.  I'm anxious to really learn how to use -- then feel like we will really get the use out of it.

We went down to shoe city Tuesday Night -- they had about fifteen pairs of shoes that were my size and that I really liked.  Couldn't get over it.  Usually its two or three pairs in my size and none that I really like.  So I ended up getting four pairs -- one Flamolare tie shoe, a Selby sandal, and two pairs of Cobbies -- one Sandal and one tie.  The total bill was some $78 dollars -- and that also includes three pair of hose.  These shoes should last for a long while -- and really not all that unreasonable -- for today's prices!!!

Has Mie Young arrived yet?  That was very interesting how she had gotten a letter from her father . . . would make you all wonder just how soon she would be coming.  Anxious to hear her thoughts about the school, and New Vienna itself.

I really had some excitement Monday night.  I've gotten into the habit of starting the bike in the garage -- when the car is not there, so that there is plenty of room to turn the bike around, and ride down the driveway.  Marion had driven, so I went to start the bike -- had it on the kick-stand.  Kicked it twice -- and then "boom -- a few sparks -- before I knew it I had the bike outside on the road.  That in itself is really something; because to get it off the kickstand is quite a feat and also to set it on the kickstand is also a feat.  That was really the extent of the excitement -- except that the bike lost all the gas in it.  I had just filled it up on Sunday and had only gone about 20 miles on the tank.  I left the bike out all day -- it was still dripping a little when I left for work.  Called up Doreen Stubbs and borrowed her car to get to work.  That night the guy came over that sold me the bike -- the owner of the shop.  He said it was just a problem with the gas line, and some kind of short somewhere.  He fixed it up for me -- didn't charge me anything.  I've a feeling that maybe it was something that was not put together right -- or finished right when I had it in for the tune-up.  But, it's going fine now -- and I'm convinced I'm much better off with it.  I drove our car out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and I was constantly asked to haul someone or do this or that everytime I headed for the door.

I didn't get around to registering for ASU this fall -- but think its just as well -- I seem to have too much stuff going now.  End up doing quite a bit of work at home -- stuff that doesn't get done at work.  Also am still working for Harry -- the flower shop -- had thought about telling him I was quitting as of end of this month -- but didn't.  Did tell him that I wanted off the first two Saturdays in October.  He seemed to think that he would have a hard time without me two Saturdays straight.  I'm doing all his billing now -- as far as all the wire orders -- and the organizations Teleflora, Flora, American Floral Assoc., are the big ones.  FTD is really the big one -- but that is strictly computerized.  Really nice and easy.  I've also worked for him some evenings -- and it all comes in handy -- the money for shoes, and microwave, and all the routine bills.

Also the book-keeping process out at work is being completely changed on October 1st.  Most senior centers will be going on computer -- but we will not be.  The center in town is going on computer.  Under this new system we will have to figure out daily on each person -- how many times this year they have used the center, what age group (60-64; 64-69; etc) what income bracket; what marital status; etc.  Also divide their day into 30 minute sections; and what they do for each time section -- meal, recreation, nutrition ed, consumer ed, etc.  Just unbelievable.  I'm supposed to go to a four hour training deal this Tuesday for the new system.

Did I ever tell you all that Vera (the woman that wanted to come to New Vienna this summer) had a heat stroke in her home about two days after I left?  She really had a time of it all.  Wasn't found for a day -- then taken to the hospital where she spent a week -- then put in a private home -- small nursing home type of deal -- but that turned out to be a disaster -- she was too much alive for them -- so they took her back home; and her neighbor took her in -- then she went to her grand niece's in Calif. for about a week; then come back.  Now she is staying in with a couple about 4 blocks from where she lives.  She really is happy there -- has a small apartment -- what used to be their attached garage.  It's fixed up very nice -- and she can use their house as far as watching TV etc.  She has to pay them $250 a month -- which included her meals.  It's an ideal set-up.  Wish she could stay there forever -- but they have a lady coming in October 4th.  The paramedics asked her age -- and she wouldn't tell -- I did see it on her medical records -- 94 years old.  She is quite a character.  Hopefully she will be ok back in her own house this winter.  The main problem was that she didn't have any air conditioning, and would keep all the windows closed, didn't even use a fan  The other day I was over there and she wanted me to write some checks for her -- her account was down to some 83 thousand after I wrote about 6 checks for her.  Just unbelievable!!!  Vera was walking with a walker when I first saw her -- in the nurses home -- before she went to Calif.  Now she is getting along with just her cane again.  But when she dances she doesn't need the cane.  She has been coming to the center three times a week -- bingo days.  Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays she goes to her church (Catholic) and plays cards.

We are looking forward to Grandma coming out.  Hopefully by then we will have the microwave directions down pat so it will be at its top-efficient self.

Better be closing -- thanks for your letter . . . .

Love,
Roberta

1980 Roberta's Letter to GHU -Sep.17

[9/17/80]
Wednesday Morning
Dear Grandma,

From the sounds of your last letter and the folks on the telephone you all really had a busy time with the Hortons visit.  I'm glad you've had now a few weeks to rest up before we take off.

Your arrival date here of the first is just fine.  It's going to be a big day at work on the 2nd -- Thursday.  A play -- sort of.  they have all been busy learning their lines -- etc.  I'm glad that you will be here to see that.  Also there are some other good stuff happening out at work while you will be here.

The dates for us to go to Oregon are also fine.  I've got it worked out for me to miss work that week.  Actually I will only be missing four days of work because the 13th is some kind of holiday so the center would be closed.  I keep thinking I should write Catherine a note of some kind.  About how many days would you like to spend there?  Have you thought about what else would be interesting to see or do while we are in the area.  I would like to go over by the Oregon coast.  The weather and foliage should really be nice the week we are there -- hopefully not too cold!!!

Work has actually been very hectic the last two weeks.  We are limited to the number of people that we are able to take -- 70 meals at the center.  Both days this week we have had to turn away about 40 people.  Of course everyone feels like "that they should not be turned away."  I wonder what its going to be like this winter with the arrival of the "snow-birds."  That really upsets the people -- when a "snowbird" knocks them out of getting a meal -- when they live here year-round.  We cannot turn away winter visitors -- and are not allowed to give preference to year-round residents.

Have you every heard from Joe as far as when he will be in Ohio????  Hopefully it will be the last part of the month.  Will the Hortons make another trip up to Ohio?  I sure wish I could see Joe on one of his trips.

It's now Thursday morning . . . yesterday morning Rev. Wise and his parents came out to the center to see me.  His parents don't live all that far from the center.  They are sure enjoying his visit with them.

I've been busy typing up new song sheets for out at work.  We don't have a typewriter there so its meant doing them at home.  Two weeks ago I took this typewriter out there but in a weeks time only three songs got typed.  So I decided it would be much easier to do them here at home.

It has noticeably cooled down . . . thank goodness.  Now in the morning usually open up the doors until about 7:00 or so -- we still keep the Air Conditioning on tho at 80º.

I need to close so that I can get ready for work.  Will be writing the folks tonight . . .

Love,
Roberta
