1953 Jean's letter - July 18

First and last pages of this 1953 eight page letter from Jean to her mother are scanned below. Transcription follows.

We haven't heard from you since the card we received July 3rd!
Friday
July 18, 1953
Dearest Mother,

We really hated to have to call our visit off to New Cumberland.  Things just didn't seem to be for our going though.

Roberta has had a temperature and runny nose for two days now - seems to be pretty much herself but bothered by not being able to breathe at times.  Harold I'm afraid has caught it for his nose is running today & he doesn't feel too peppy.

I've not had any cold but somehow have been terribly hoarse & don't sound a bit like myself.

Catherine (so far) is fine so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Aunt Luna leaves tomorrow morning on the 10:19 train for New York to visit her daughter.  This is the longest stay she's had here for quite a while – nine days.

We have been waiting for the plasterer to come since May 15 and he finally came last night to look at it & promised to come back tomorrow (Sat.) afternoon to start it.  I told him we had planned to go away so he said he couldn't come til the end of the following week if he doesn't come tomorrow.

Harold's mother made an appointment for him for tonite at 6:30, not knowing that we had other plans.

Paul Steele is on vacation & the district supt is to speak & knowing Paul asked Harold to introduce him & left the bulletins for him.  He (Harold) had planned to give someone else these duties if we went away & unless he's feeling better soon someone else will still have to do it.

All put together, we just felt it would be better for everyone's health to stay home.  But we regretted not getting to see you yet.  Is it just impossible for you to come down to New Vienna?  It only takes 5 hours by train or 1½ by plane & we'd be glad to meet you anyplace.  Dayton, Columbus, Xenia or anyplace.  Blaine said Bob was to get out of the hospital today & Jim next week - do hope they're both much better.  I know you have them both on your mind but couldn't you spare a few days for the Uibles.

Tuesday I drove Aunt Luna & Mother Uible to Cincinnati to go shopping & to the doctors.  Catherine & I took a bus & went to the zoo & had a big day.  They had amusements there as well as animals & the former was by far the bigger attraction.  We got hot dogs & root beer & ice cream twice & by 1:30 Catherine wanted to know when we were going to eat lunch so we ate downtown again before meeting to go home.  We stopped at Mary & Joe Hiestand's (the farm where Aunt Luna lived from the time she was 11 til she got married).  Linda (the older daughter ) had just been entertaining her 4-H club, a couple with 4 boys had arrived unexpectedly that day from Tennessee so they were having more than their share of company.

Wednesday I took my first piano lesson of the my later life and hope I continue a little better than my previous attempts.  I went as far as could in an adult book I bought a couple of months ago so now am able to  go on further – chords now which I hear in my sleep.

Catherine says to tell you she's sorry not to get to see you.

Next Wednesday is the Redeemer's Class Picnic and the following Sunday is the day set for the Sunday School Picnic.  The night before we're having an ice cream supper and the day after Bible School begins & I've promised to help with that but we'll see about getting away that weekend.  ( Jul August July 25- or 26th)  If we do get up there then, we'll definitely expect you to come home with us (or will take it as a personal offense, if you don't!)  Guess I have to get tough if I ever hope to get you down here – Love - our very best, Harold, Jean, Catherine & Roberta.

Really enjoying trip - Norway & Sweden are both beautiful and seeing much of the countryside, staying in gorgeous folk schools.  This one is on 4th largest Swedish island.  The fjords are just as lovely as they say they are.  Spent one night in Oslo hotel between school so got to see city life too.  They keep us very busy - some lectures, on what we are to see, nature walks & much sightseeing!

48 interesting people form many place & walks of life (3 librarians)  Dad is only attorney & youngest we think but all youthful.

Sure appreciated your letters Mother Uible & MV - both rec'd yesterday.  Thanks so much!
Love from the Elder Hostelers.

Sweden 7/1983

We were out to this island - a summer resort.  The fort here was started in 1600.  Lots of dairy products, cheese with every meal, + yogurt for breakfast & milk every meal.

Have been in Gothenberg these last 2 days - have a nice Public Library 2/ the NYT.  European Edition of WSJ is 75¢.  Rode the street car today to get around, hope to rent bikes in Denmark & there are many bikes here - even separate bike lanes.  Have seen J. Ropes & balls here, mostly H. Kong imports.  The strawberries are ripe here now.  – J&H

1982 Roberta's letter to MV - July 17

Ten years after Roberta's college trip to Europe, she's in Arizona writing to MV after June's visit to Ohio for GHU's 90th birthday. Transcription follows.

July 17, 1982

Hi Mary Virginia!

Here are a few of the pictures – I've got them going out today to  all points of the USA – Florida, Oregon, etc. ––

Are you eating right now that you are on your own???  Working at Wells you really need to!!

Charlie is at a pet CAMP – he was just too much for me – he can now jump the fences – so it was impossible to keep him – we are going to have to build our fences higher!!

Carl – the friendly alcoholic left - did I tell you that before?

Marian is tripping to Idaho to see her sister – taking her folks with her.  She will be back in AZ end of July – then will probably spend most of August up at the cabin.  I don't blame her ––

When do you start school?

How's Grandma?  Must be pretty quiet there - compared to the time around her birthday –

Gotta go ––

Love, Roberta

1972 Roberta's letter - July 16

Roberta writes a letter from Greece in July 1972. Transcription follows.

July 16, 1972

Dear Family,

Hi!  Thanks so much for the LONG letter I got when we arrived in Athens today.  Also for John's nice letter.

It was great talking to you tonight (this afternoon) for you!  Hope I didn't put you into shock!  It was quite an experience calling.  We all went to a telegraph/telephone office - it took about 2 hours before we got through.

I was really sorry to hear about John being sick.  I do hope by now he is all reap recuperated.  Do keep me informed!  I just know he will feel better once we get the van.

I sent you all (I think) 3 post-cards & a letter to Mexico.  Did you all get any of them?

I wonder how Vanessa did on the College entrance test.  She will learn to sit down for more than three hours if she goes to U.C.!!

Was happy to hear that Nancy Walker got the key to the Apartment.  I'm glad that someone will get some use out of it.

Beth - one of my friends on the tour - told me about the parachute ride that John & Mom went on.  She said it was really high - she didn't go on it because she is scared of heights.

We really have a busy four days planned in Athens.  We do have tomorrow afternoon free so a couple of us plan to go shopping - Beth wants to buy one of those rugs.

Greece is really a pretty country - tho I didn't realize how bad off the people were. (poor)  The roads here are something else – I don't think they have every heard of freeways!!

Delphi was interesting.  We went through the museum there this morning.  Also had our lunch there - which was real good.

I better be closing for now – I'll write more tomorrow afternoon or evening.

OK - I was wondering if you knew why Mrs. Matthews is in a private room now?  Is it just because she had been wanting one?  Which room is she in?  Must be the one in the same location as Mrs. Landrum.

Mom, have you been to Americare?  I'm wondering how Mrs. Matthews, Miss Judy [?], Phoebe Landrum, Mrs. Fawley, Mrs. Riggs & Louise, etc.  I'm anxious to see the article about Louise [?].

As far as the average tourist taking 10 rolls of film a week - I guess I'm rally below average as I'm still on my 2nd roll.  And I took about 1 whole roll in London alone.  After that I got tired of taking the camera everyplace - also got tired of taking picture of the inside of my purse or the inside of my coat pocket!!

Wow - we had a busy morning - hiked all over the Parthenon - had a beautiful view of the city.  Saw the Temple of Nike (Wingless Victory) etc.

What's this about Catherine & X going to Maine?  You mentioned it in your letter - but I didn't understand.

Keep me informed about the Democratic Convention!!  Also on the health of my baby brother.  Do tell Grandma Hi for me - I was sure sorry I missed talking to everyone else - but I know that everyone at Americare enjoyed seeing Grandma, Dad, and Mary V.

Well, I'll be closing - I'll write more when I can - Again - thanks for the letter and sure enjoyed talking to you, MOM.

Love, Bert

1972 Roberta in Greece

Roberta moves on from Italy to Greece, possibly getting her first taste of "cruising" by crossing the Ionian Sea from Italy to Greece.  She sends the following two postcards to GHU.  Transcription follows.

Dear Grandma,
Hi! Got in this boat about 11:00 last night - now on our way to Greece.  I really slept good - sorta felt like someone was rocking me the whole night.

The boat is really huge - has five floors – even has a swimming pool on it!  I plan on going swimming this afternoon.

Hope all is fine!  Hi to the family.  Love, Bert

Hi!  We were here this morning - I hope I can remember half of what I'm learning on this trip!!

Greek food is really something - I'm never sure just exactly what I'm eating!!

I can't believe I'm walking on the same ground that Socrates & Plato walked on!!!

Love, Bert

1963 Copley Square Hotel July 16

In July 1963 the family took a trip to New England, visiting historic sites in New York City, Boston, Plymouth Rock, Revolutionary War sites and more.  The hotel bill shown here was for a family suite, Monday, July 15, 1963 for one night.  Postcard is transcribed below.  MV would join the family seven months later.

We were all a bit nervous about eating at Durgin-Park after being forewarned that certain types of behavior were not tolerated – can't remember what exactly though, sharing? pouring our own water?

John would have been 5 3/4 when he lost his first tooth.

We've seen lots of waterfalls, big lakes (fjords), interesting places here in Norway.  One day we were on three trains, four busses and a boat seeing the beautiful scenery.

There is lots of daylight - we are so near the north pole that there is little darkness.  The sun doesn't go down 'til about 10:30 PM.  We are with a real nice group for three weeks – people from all over U.S.  Do say "Hello" to your Mother & Dad.  Hope to see you in CALIFORNIA.  Love, Grandma & G'Dad

1983 Catherine's letter - July 12

Catherine sends a letter to Denmark.  I think the Flying E Ranch experience was in 1979.   Transcription follows.

Tues. July 12, 1983

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  How is your vacation?  Are you learning alot? Does it count as an educational experience and/or a vacation?

We got your letter as we were leaving on a weekend camping trip.  We went with some friends (Dean & Goldie Huston - he was Exalted Ruler of Elks the first year Gerry was Sec'y).  They have a trailer (14') parked at Wolf Creek campground which is about 10 miles north of Paulina.  It's about 110 miles from Madras.  Very remote area.  Wendy had a good time.  She can't remember our last major camping trip during her 1st summer – before we moved to Madras.

We thought Dee Dee was coming the 13th but she changed the date to the 25th because of a concert in San Diego.  Now that she's getting older (15) she has alot more involvements.  Wendy was very disappointed as she had been counting down the days.

I took Wendy out of Day Care and she is now going to a lady's house who babysits about 6 girls aged 5-8.  It is much more of a home atmosphere and Wendy seems to like the change.  We were having problems at Day Care as Wendy decided long ago their food wasn't fit to eat.  They require that she has a portion of each tem on her plate – seems like a good idea but she was in tears every meal.  I told her she needed to eat lunch to grow healthy and strong – she said "I only want to grow at home."  They also required naps which she has an aversion to.

The library has been very busy.  We have about 180 in the summer reading program.  It will be ending July 29.  We may have serious problems with our budget for 84-85 due to ending of Revenue Sharing.  Of the 35,000 we get from the County during 83-84, $25,000 is from revenue sharing.

Hope you get this before your return to U.S.A.  We'll talk to you then!

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy

Getting along fine & really like the program.  The food is great - even have buttermilk in 2 strengths - several kinds of fish at each meal & cheese galore.

Plane was full of all ages.  One lady in our group is 85.

One can read by daylight even @ 11P.M. - now we would like to go further North.  Had forgotten all about the Vikings & 10th century history until we got back in the classroom here. Love, J&H – to Oslo on Saturday.

Heard a piano concert in Ed Grieg's home.  Piano built in 1892.  Went for a short swim - COLD.  J&H

Went and had an American breakfast - O.J., pancakes, with maple syrup & butter. And I don't usually like maple syrup!!  Will write more tomorrow.  Love, Bert

Dear Family,

Hi!  Went yesterday to Island of Capri and from there to Blue Grotto.  Was so beautiful!

Then today went to a cameo factory (didn't even buy anything ) and then to Pompeii!  Can't get over everything there!  The jewelry, the dentist's tools, etc. etc.  I'm anxious to get home now & get out my Western Civilization book again.

I didn't like Naples at all – but we didn't spend too much time there!  WRITE!!  Love, Bert

1972 Roberta's Italy postcards

Via Aerea -- first thought this postcard was addressed to someone named Via or Vic, but Roberta evidently wanted to make sure her postcard traveled by "air" rather than one of those slow boats from Italy.

Hi! Grandma –
Went to the Vatican this morning & guess who we saw?  The POPE!! [That would have been Pope Paul VI, who was Pope from 1963-1978] But we weren't very close.  He rattled off for about a half of an hour in Italian – so we didn't get much out of his message!

also went thru the Vatican museum this morning - saw the present that Pres. Nixon gave the Pope - some kind of bird made out of China.  To Naples today. – Love, Bert

7/7/73 Dear Mother
Staying just a block from the ocean - the weather is cool and very damp.  We had dinner at Grace's home last night - a real treat & have talked with the folks that Serena stayed with.  Hot water is a big luxury here.  Grace & her Mother drove us around today and met us at the airport.  We also made the trip downtown on the bus - about 8¢.  They have no fuel [or no beef?? – looks like beef but fuel fits the context better] here the 1st 15 days of each month - but lots of auto traffic everywhere.  Love, Jean, Harold & John

1973 Catherine's letter - July 10

Catherine sends an aerogramme from Maine to Peru, evidently forgetting that MV stayed in Florida. Transcription follows.

Tuesday morning, July 10, 1973

Dear Mom, Dad, John and Mary,

Hi!  We got your postcard from Florida yesterday.  Thanks for sending the birth certificate, too.  We are having our fifth nice day in a row which is a record for the year.  It was extremely hot Sunday and yesterday but it does cool down at night so at least it isn't uncomfortable sleeping.

X had alot of trouble with his ears last week.  One was functioning improperly and he couldn't hear out of the other one at all.  He finally managed to get a doctor and have them blown out or something.  They seem to be alot better now although he is susceptible to infections for two weeks.

I went to the Maine Mall Saturday - a big shopping center in South Portland.  I actually bought a new dress and a pant suit.  I wanted to get some shoes but I didn't have any luck there.  Couldn't even find a place that sold narrow sneakers.  I guess I'll have to order a pair from Sears.  The mall is about 30 miles from Sanford.

We've had an ad in the paper to try to sublet this apartment.  So far we haven't had any luck.  There will be only 3 months left on the lease but we would like to get somebody else to move in so we won't have to pay double rents.

In checking the vacation calendar for the month of August, I found out that we won't be able to take the week that you plan to come.  It might be possible for us to get a day or two off during that week but I can't guarantee it.  The week after would be even worse but the week before might be better.  You are still more than welcome to come the week of our anniversary you'll just have to do more on your own, which I'm sure you could manage.  I don't think you ever said if you want me to reserve a wheel chair for Grandma.  Please let me know.

We drove all over the countryside on Sunday looking at different lands that are for sale.  I managed to get a moderate case of poison ivy on my left hand.  Every piece of property we've looked at so far seems to have a problem:  swamps, no electricity, no road, no trees  etc.  Not to mention the cost.

-Bought a wringer washing machine for X$5.00 over the weekend.  Can't use it until we move in into the house though.

Working at the library has become much more of a routine now that we have gotten used to it.  It is a bit of apinch [sic] when people go on vacations though trying to fix the schedules.  There is one girl who is working just for the summer so she more or less takes the place of avacationing people.

We're waiting to hear from South America.  Write soon!

Love, Catherine & X

1973 Roberta's letter to Serena - July 8

No envelope with this letter but we can assume Roberta mailed it to Serena in Brazil. Transcription follows, not quite accurate as I'm not sure how to do typeovers on the computer though I think there might be a way to do that. As we all know Roberta's non-academic talents have way overshadowed any lack in the school grades department. Glad to have you as my favorite oldest sister, Roberta!

July 8, 1973

Dear serena,

Hi, well first off you will have to excuse my typing, I haven't typed for so long and of course I never was super the typist . . .  When the family came down they brought down my typewriter so thought I better be getting some good use out of it!!!  I know I'll be getting alot of use out of it by July 31st . . . . .as I have a forty page paper due then, that has to be typed.  I really don't have a start on the paper xx at all, so I've got a feeling I'm going to be having a slight heart attack about the last week of July.

So how is everything with you?  I hope you are enjoying Brazil, hey what language do they speak there, is it Porteg . . . . well you know how bad of a speller I am.  Speaking of spelling and everything, remember the tests I was telling you about that I had to take down at Florida Atlantic Univ . . . . . . . . well, I got the results back the other day, I rated below average in everything, spelling, reading, math, you name it.  I know they must be wondering how I've ever made it this far in school.  You know, I wonder myself.

Now back to Brazil . . . . . . . . what's it like . . . . . it is cold, hot, or inbetween?  And how is the family that you are staying with?  Do they speak English?  I guess you notice my panic about the language people speak, I just wouldn't know what to d say to someone that didn't speak English!!!!

Oh, Vanessa and Diane Walwaven are coming down sometime today.  Poor Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill don't know what they are in for.  I got off Thursday and Friday from work so if nothing goes wrong, we will all be heading up to Disney World for those two days.  I figure I might as well go for broke while they are here.  Mary Virginia will be going to Disney World with us, also another girl that I've met at work may go, we should really have a riot!!!!!!

I guess you know that I had joined fat club . . . . . weight watchers, well it is really beginning to pay off.  At first I wasn't losing that much and no-one could tell, except for the people that I had told and I think they were just telling me that I looked thinner because they knew they should, but anyway now, my clothes are really getting baggy, and oh I love it, the baggier they get.  I'd love to get so thin people would worry about me, you know the real sickly type of thin.

We got your post card.  I hope you all made it out of Dallas, ok.

Oh, it is now Sunday night, Vanessa and Diane made it down.  I wish you could have heard Vanessa talking about their tyipxdown, like they left on Friday night but only drove for three hours because they were too tired to drive anymore.  Gee . . . . no wonder it took them three days to get here.

Did you hear that I got a C out of the Math course that I took at the junior college.  And I was really lucky to get that.  Then I started the Science course, but I had to drop it.  I needed to have had chemistry in high school and of course I had never taken chemistry.  I really can't say that I was too disappointed about having to drop it.

Well, I better quit for now, I'm beginning not to make much sense (Ha, as if I did when I first started!)  Well, write when you can and enjoy your summer.  Oh, Vanessa says that she owes you 20¢ from about a year ago.  I'd charge her interest if I were you.

Everyone says Hello –––

Love, Bert
