HHU's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Saturday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Sunday 1990 - [Easter, Roberta and Crowsons visiting] Sunrise Service at 6:30, great breakfast followed.  Mother never really woke up all day.  Effort to get her to drink water.  She did eat MV's cherry and strawberry pie "extra good".  The Strickers brought a big bakery cake that people had after Sunday School and Church (120 present).

Tuesday 1992 - [Kentucky to Ohio] Visited White Hall, home of Cassius Clay [the emancipationist, not the boxer who changed his name to Muhammad Ali].  Very interesting, lunch at Oriental Wok on Buttermilk Pike [in Ft. Mitchell].  Thinking of making hollow balls and 64oz. bubble bottles.

Wednesday 1993 -  Two lock box openings, got about 50 seedlings that we put out in the garden.  Bruce wants a special price on 3 and 5/8 plastic balls, 12¢ each.  Mother sleepy but eating.  Her skin looks great.

Friday 1994 - [England] Rental car from Alamo, 2 weeks for $330, drove down to Bexhill where we saw Cynthia and she had [arranged] a B&B for us -- Mrs. Hill's at 33 Woodville Rd., 30# a night, about $45.  We had lunch at Cooden Bay Hotel

Saturday 1995 - Picked up more sticks in the yard and mowed most of the yard where the higher grass was, saw first asparagus up.  After lunch we drove to Mini-Mall, took the old computer to see what was wrong and bought a new computer with a scanner.  Went to Tri-County Mall and got a new telephone answering machine.  Had supper at Boston Market, had a $2 off coupon.  Men's UMC breakfast this AM, Mike Cowman spoke, one of his stories was about the glass of milk, never know who we are helping.

Wednesday 1998 - Met Goodings at Waynesville Restaurant for supper.  Also saw the Keiters [?] with the Dr. Hamiltons' , they have been retired from medical practice for 11 years.  Bob still as talkative as ever.  He told us a couple times of how ?? [Tim? Linn?] interviewed Gary Kersey for his program in Bellbrook.  Iced tea 80¢, liver and onions $5.95.

Bill Holmes of New Vienna Ohio

Many of us remember Bill Holmes (b. 1884) as the ultimate "it's a perfect fit" salesman at Huffman Clothing, downtown, Main Street, New Vienna Ohio.

Here's pictures of him at two different stages of his life:
M.R. Harris Grocery, Iron Building c1915, New Vienna Ohio, later became Daye Hardware.  Pictured Harry Curtis, Bill Holmes and M.R. Harris - Image Courtesy of Mike Whited

The 1910 Census shows William H. Holmes (26), wife Norma E. (29), son Harold G. (8), Daughter Thelma J. (6), and son Burdette (3).  Bill is listed as a grocery clerk.

In the 1920 Census W.H. "Bill" Holmes  was 36, clothing store clerk, wife Norma 39, daughter Thelma, "very brilliant" 15, son Burdette 13.  Thelma later became a teacher in Columbus.  [No mention of Harold, who would now be 18, in Ohio.]

  1. From Chuck Collier: Great job Catherine & we ALL love it!! Mike Whited....i have to look you up this summer & see all of those pics!! We have a bunch of NV historians on the [email] list. Help me out here gang.........but the pic of Bill Holmes has got to be in the 1970's. we didn't wear wide ties in the 60's & Bill looks very old in that photo. I'd heard that when he was in his 90's, a dog caused him to fall over at the Shell station & that was the beginning of the end. If you remember, he lived right across the street. The Huffman pic can't be from 1930. Bill didn't buy it until maybe the mid--late 1950's. Penny or Gretchen could tell you. it was Phillips Clothing before....remember gang...it was Harley Phillips who ran it. He was an old gentleman who'd had throat cancer & talked through the hole in his throat.

[Editor's Note: I'll change the dates when we get a consensus.]

From Mike Whited: Didn't Bill always call everyone Honey?! I remember when Dad bought my first suit; it was from Bill.
  2. THAT'S the Bill Holmes I remember with the coke bottle glasses!
  3. I adjusted the dates and am publishing a new post on Bill Huffman. Here are more comments I received by email:

From Chuck: [slightly edited] Bill Holmes was something else!! I can still hear that gruff, staccoto type voice & as i remember, he was chewing gum quite often. A true "character" of NV. avon theater, post office, dr. fullerton's, faris implement, the bank, carey's/john earl's barber shop, streber's, phiilip's/huffman clothing, noble's drug store, master's/sweeney's/minzler's grocery & pete demas' restaurant/jim chaney's barber shop.....a great row of shops in NV. i have abouit 6 of the NV bank calendars. there are some great pics in there....mostly from jo williams, homer's wife. one of the pics is of gleason streber in the 1930's......yes, catherine, they were there a long time!! what fun this is!! mike, a get together would much fun this summer.....we'll be in touch!!

From Nancy H: Yes, I remember Harley Phillips. I had forgotten all about him until Chuck talked about him. I remember Bill driving VERY slow around town as did Doyle Wright and you had to watch out for them. It drove Dorothy Wright Johnson Bernard and Thelma crazy. They didn't want to take their keys away from them! I remember Thelma wearing red lipstick and she didn't put it on right. She was a lot fun to be around. I know she was a great teacher. I remember Mom talking about her brother Burdett in Columbus, but I don't remember her mentioning Harold. I have such fond memories of NV, but when I go back now it makes me so sad, because it has changed so much. I love all the stories and pictures that all of you have sent thru the e-mails. They bring back fond memories!! I think all of us need to take a day and get with Mike Whited and look at his pictures of NV!! Keep the stories and pictures coming. I will help you anyway I can. I can alway ask my brother David. He remembers things about NV that I have forgotten.

Catherine adds: What did happen to Harold Holmes??

Chuck adds: great memories nancy....LOVE IT!!!! and bill as i remember drove a black & white 1956 ford at one time & went, like nancy said, no more than 12 miles an hour......tom greene pulled him over once & said "bill, speed it up a bit"!!(just teasing)...

From Marvin W: Oh the memories.....I don't remember the car he (Bill Holmes) was driving at the time, but I do remember watching him drive up and double park in front of the clothing store. The strange part about the situation was he didn't have to open the drivers door to get out. You see, there wasn't any door. I was told Bill lost the door in an accident and chose not to replace it. It just made it a lot easier for him to get in and out I guess. I have to admit it was a strange sight to see him drive through town.
  4. And more comments received by email:

John U adds: I will guess the last picture of Bill Holmes was closer to 1970 as I remember him well from delivering the New Journal to the store in the late 60's and early 70's. And I do not recall him loooking as old as he does in that photo. This brought back some great memories for me. The paper route was some solid good business experience from an early age for us.

From Jim S: I remember getting my first pair of regular basketball shoes at Huffmans and Bill took care of me they were the RED BALL JET SHOES I think KEDS made them. I also used to buy a lot of shirts from the store after I got out of High School. Like Marvin said I also remember Bill driving that car with the drivers door off. Bill sure was a salesman he sure could talk.

John L adds: Did Bill Huffman buy the store from Harley Phillips and then later sell it to Bob Johnson or was it the other way around? I kind of think Bill still had the store for a while after he moved to Hillsboro. I can remember being up town well after Bill Holmes would have closed the store only to see him drive up, double park and go to the door of the store to make sure he had locked up. I guess that was rather common.

Chuck adds: Bill bought it from harley...pretty sure. Does anyone other than me really remember harley & the esophageal speech he used due to his laryngectomy?? It's been a very long time ago. Also, no one seems to remember agin's furniture. Carl Agin had a furniture store next to the locker (where don mill's restaurant was later). As a kid, I spent much time in the locker with my aunt blanche. The furniture store wasn't there very long. They had a couople of kids.. skip & pam, I believe...we're talking 1955 or so. The store was not very clean...you wouldn't buy a sofa there. On the downward side of the locker was thorne's & later our store, if I remember correctly.

Mike W - found an historical article from a 1960 WNJ, with the history of Huffman Clothing which is being posted soon. [To summarize – Bill Huffman bought it from the Phillips in 1958, the store originally opened in 1896 and Bill Holmes started working there in 1917.]

Chuck: thanks mike.....mystery solved & a great piece of NV history. for more stuff like this, i ask you all to some time go to the CC library on n. south st. & go thru the WNJ micro films......they'll help you run the machines. it's really simple. if i can do it, any one can. i've spent many hours in there on my summer vacations in the past years. the films go back into the late 1800's. thanks again mike....it'll be great to see you this summer...it's been way too many years!! i have fond memories of you & your dad!!

Waynoka, White and Paint

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Friday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Sunday 1991 - Went to Hillsboro.  Virginia Walker called us about going to Lake Waynoka for a square dance.  After dance we went to Lake Manor Restaurant with the group.  Dorothy Hodson's [Bob's wife] father is also at Heartland.  She is still anti-flying and worried about her Dad.

Monday 1992 - [Kentucky]  Met MV for lunch at Wendy's then we visited the computer place.   Somerset Mall is 10 years old and has a lot of vacant stores.  The choir had a musical special.  Betty Bowles (MV's teacher) was one of the soloists.

Sunday 1996 - Mike Cowman spoke at church -- joke about lost pig that the policeman told him to take to the zoo and he was so good he took him to King's Island and saw the same policeman again.  Met Helen Carr and Vivian Hiestand in -- open house at Mugs -- need a lot of imagination to live there.  We drove to Lake White Club near Waverly for lunch.  Saw Paint Lake Dam en route.  Vivian is 83 [she passed away on 3/28/2010], has a son in Grand Rapids, MI and a daughter and grand-daughter (an M.D.) in Chapel Hill NC, also a daughter in Seminole, FL.

Monday 1997 - Rob Rankin here to work on chimney, charges $18/hour.  Milk still 99¢ a gallon.

Snow Hill Pictures and Future Posts

Snow Hill Country Club, Wilmington Ohio [New Vienna] Aerial view 1924 - Image Courtesy of Mike Whited
Sunday, November 9, 1924 – Snow Hill Country Club, Wilmington, Ohio.  This picture was taken during the opening exercises, attended by 1,500 residents of Wilmington and vicinity.  Snow Hill, the early home of Mrs. George Dent Crabbs, Cincinnati, was built by her great-grandfather in 1820.  She had the homestead restored and gave it to the club.  Captain John W. Pattison* and Lieutenant Wright Vermilya*.

In the interest of sharing more pictures sooner (and getting ahead of my self-appointed deadlines), I'm sharing pictures without much historical research to go with them.  I love the research part (or I wouldn't be doing it) but it can be a big drain of time; fascinating, but time consuming.
Snow HIll Country Club, October 13, 1924, New Vienna Ohio - Image Courtesy of Mike Whited

Therefore, some subjects for which I have not yet even started research, I'll go ahead and post some pictures in and around our current ongoing stories – Pictures and family memorabilia from the 1950s and prior, Europe 1954 Tour, etc...  In case you are interested and/or have something you would like to share – pictures, stories, memorabilia, information, anything would be welcome.  Here's a list of what is currently in progress:

Coming up but still being researched:
  • Blacksmiths of New Vienna (soon)
  • Bill Holmes (sooner)
  • Young Ho Kim (where are the pictures?) (late April?)
  • New Vienna (Ohio) Methodist Church History (May)
  • Wells Article from 1952 (mid-May)
  • History of New Vienna in the 1920s - (late May)
  • Report Cards? - boring, but of historical interest? (late May)
  • CJU & GHU's 99th Anniversary (June) -- still have postcards from them not yet posted
  • Auburn (Careytown), Highland, and West Chapel Churches possibly included in an article on other New Vienna (and area) Churches
  • Friends (Quakers) in New Vienna Area, National Headquarters of Pacifist Movement post-Civil War
  • New Vienna Bank (next year with the 1960s?)
  • New Vienna Flour Mill, Bodens
  • New Vienna Business District - pre 1960
  • Early Citizens of New Vienna
  • Hiestands
  • Browns
  • Westboro

*And because I can't resist doing some research, Captain John W. Pattison (1884-1957) was a WW1 Air Force Veteran, and was active as an aerial photographer and a leader in civil aviation who lived in the Milford area. He was also the son of Ohio's 43rd Governor, John M. Pattison.
**Lieutenant Wright Vermilya was the pilot of a Spartan C4-300 according to the first United States aircraft registry in 1927.
According to the 1916 History of Clinton County, [in 1820] "Charles Harris built the "Snow Hill house," and opened a tavern there, probably the first opened in the county. Mr. Harris's brother-in-law, Samuel Wasson, built a house about the same time and near the Snow Hill house and commenced to entertain travelers."

Charles Harris is the father of Elisha Harris (b. 1808) who in the 1850s and 1860s lived and worked in New Vienna as an "Innkeeper," possibly running the Harris Hotel at the intersection of what later became SR-73 and SR-28.

Monday 1998 - [Crowsons visiting]  Problems with Merle at Wells.  Too much business.  Happy to get quick death certificate for Tom McMillin.  Terry T., MV's classmate from Urbana was here.  Her baby is 6-months old.  Crowsons left before supper for Wilmington for overnight stay.  Christian can really yell.   [MV added in 2010 "Christian's yells were more what I would classify as scream or shrieking. AWFUL!"]

Tuesday 1999 -  Serena surprised us in coming for a visit.  She has been in Des Moines for a library interview and possible move there.

Class Pictures: 1957 Third Grade & 1959 Fifth Grade

Mrs. Woodmansee's 1957-58 Third Grade class must have been her biggest class ever -- 45 students, 31 girls and 14 boys – good thing we were all so well behaved.  Every other of my elementary school years, except fourth grade, the class was split.  In the 1962 yearbook (seventh grade) there were 42 students in what became part of the East Clinton Class of 1967.  With the help of classmates I might be able to recreate the names of the teachers but here's what I remember:

First Grade - Miss Carey [Shirley McKamey] and Mrs. Fenwick*
Second Grade - Miss Aleda Purtee and Mrs. Johnson (she was daughter of Doyle Wright, married to Bub Johnson)
Third Grade - Mrs. Martha Woodmansee
Fourth Grade - Mrs. Virginia Hildebrant and Miss Smart [Jeanne Wolfe] (4th,6th)
Fifth Grade - Mrs. Ethel King and Miss Smart (5th-6th)
Sixth Grade - Miss Smart (4th-6th) and Mrs. Penn

From the New Vienna days I have class pictures from the third grade and fifth grade and a 1962 yearbook when I was in seventh grade.  Not sure if there were class pictures from other years or yearbooks.  I have seen a 1957 yearbook but cannot find it in my collection.  Anyone have it on their shelves?

Priceless

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Wednesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Thursday 1990 - Bar meeting in Cincinnati.  Calling hours for Mabel Pausch [Leon Salisbury's sister].  Had early bird supper at Golden Lamb for $7.60 [or 7.6 (or better yet "8") as Priceless: The Myth of Fair Value, the book by William Poundstone which HH and Catherine read in 2010, would suggest as the proper way to list the price.]  With tax for two = $16.04, served 5-6:30, other meals $12 and up.

Sunday 1992 - [to Kentucky] Leave to see the Crowsons, they had just spent a week in GG's condo.  Visited Fort Boonesborough en route, combination ticket with White Hall Historic Site $5 each.  Snack at Palpeno [?] in Berea.  Church at Somerset.  Rev. Kallas* spoke, very eloquent on God's Gamble.   Crowsons heard they are moving to Williamsburg, KY.

Tuesday 1994 - [Roberta still visiting?]

Wednesday 1995 - Having trouble with the computer.  Helen Russell was in about her [housing] problems.  Richard Carr [son or husband of Helen?] called, he is so impatient.  Finally finished up our tax returns.

Friday 1996 - Worked garden over.  Planted onions and peas.  Got two books Longitude by Dava Sobel and Our Smallest Towns by Dennis Kitchen.  Article in 4/8/96 NYT about Chicago and Santa Barbara.  Had ice cream and strawberries in office to celebrate the end of tax season.  Got letter on computer and now can't find it.

Saturday 1997 - Pancake lunch at NV Senior Center, Cris and Angela are en route to get things at GHU's.  Don has possible angina problems.  Washed the car.

Sunday 1998 - [Easter]  Sunrise service at Martinsville UMC, nice turn out.  50 at Sunday School, 145 at church.  Crowsons arrived about 7:30.

*MV added in 2010: 1992 was Rev. Ellsworth Kallas, revival speaker that year. He just returned to retirement from Interim President of Asbury Seminary and has written prolifically for adult S.S. curriculum in UMC (more than you wanted to know, I'm sure...)

Spiffing up the Living Room

HHU's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Wednesday 1990 - Serena called and is going to have lump removed from her breast as an outpatient next Monday.  Roberta called, she's coming this Friday to see GHU.

Thursday 1991 - Painters finished living room.  Had a $90 dry cleaning bill for the living room drapes, Jean had previously had them cleaned when John graduated from Exeter.  Hard to get Mother to eat or drink.  Mowed front yard for first time this year.

Saturday 1992 - Mowed front yard, rhubarb about 6" high, noticed first asparagus.  Washed car.

Sunday 1993 - [Easter] 142 at church for Easter services, the young people had an Easter parade.  Ed told the story about how the bank that wouldn't loan the church $$ to build went out of business themselves.  GHU didn't eat much, but had her super shake plus 3 glasses of milk.

Monday 1994 - [Roberta visiting]

Thursday 1996 - Went to Hillsboro, saw Elsie, she is really hard of hearing.  Got GG a portable phone, went square dancing, graduation night.  Next Saturday is Jim's last day as caller, club started 20 years ago.  They have us "dancing" with paper sacks on our feet and then another time with balloons between our legs.  Herschel and Betty Arnold were the state inspectors.  Took one set of curtains down at Wells, the edges really got frayed.

Saturday 1998 - Went to Wilmington to the movie "My Giant" [with Billy Crystal] about this movie scout who thought he'd hit it big in getting this giant but then he couldn't stand to see him suffer.

HH added in 2010: Sounds like it is about time to have those drapes cleaned and/or replaced. This reminded me of how long my parents went before the wall paper was replaced in the house, I can only recall one time when the paper hanger came.

Now reading a book "The Ford Century" and how Henry's Dad thought Henry would have a problem making a living, in fact he was fired from his first job at the end of five days.

*HH adds in 2011: The covered bridge program was so long it was funny.  Pictures of all these covered bridges from each end, each side AND in every season of the year.

The Painted Pig by Elizabeth Morrow

Lucie Brown Ballantyne (1880-1957), and her brother, Robert Morrow Brown's (1877-1946) mother, Mary Virginia Morrow Brown (c1857-1890) was a sister to James Morrow.

James Morrow's son Dwight (1873-1931) was a businessman, politician and diplomat.  He was a classmate of Calvin Coolidge at Amherst College in the early 1890s, married his college sweetheart Elizabeth Reeve Cutter in 1903, and became a partner in J.P. Morgan and Co., in 1913.  They were parents of four children, including Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

President Coolidge appointed Dwight Morrow Ambassador to Mexico where he served from 1927-1930.

Elizabeth Morrow (1873-1955) of Cleveland, was the daughter of Charles Long Cutter and Annie E. Spencer and was a poet as well as the author of two children's books, one of which, The Painted Pig she signed and inscribed for Jean Ballantyne on October 6, 1930, the year it was published.

Posted by Picasa

Summary: When the toymaker forgets to make him a piggy bank, a young Mexican boy finds some clay and tries to make one of his own. Includes historical notes on Mexican folk art and the author's experiences in Mexico as the wife of the United States ambassador in the 1920s.

From information about the book: This delightful picture book, first published in 1930, was written for children, but as a beautiful evocation of an era of awakening American interest in Mexican art and culture it will appeal to adults as well. The author, Elizabeth Morrow, first went to Mexico in 1927, when her husband, Dwight Morrow, was appointed American ambassador. The story is about a remarkable painted pig with a savings bank manner and a very stylish rosebud tail. The pig belongs to Pita, and is coveted by her younger brother, Pedro. Pancho, “The Toymaker” in the market, promises to make another one, but between the promise and the delivery is a wonderful story-telling journey.
The Painted Pig was inspired by the extraordinary collection of Mexican toys created by the author’s friend René d’Harnoncourt, who illustrated the book.

A facsimile of the first edition, published by the University of New Mexico Press in 2001, includes an introduction by a folklorist who knew Mrs. Morrow when he was a boy and an afterword by two of her granddaughters.

“Color, rhythm and a true understanding of children . . . set this book apart. It is in no way derivative, nor can it be compared with any other book.”—New York Herald Tribune

*****
The Painted Pig is one of several books in the Uible/Ballantyne vintage book collection which also includes some of Robert Morrow Brown's books from the late 1890s.

Roberta is inspiration

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Sunday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Monday 1990 - Mother seemed real good, sat up for several hours.  Pam Anthony started staying from 1 to 6.  Joann Rankin from 11PM to 7AM and Kathy McIntosh the rest of the time.

Tuesday 1991 - Called MUH, they hope to be here in early May, they are in rut.  The men served the NVUMW group, around 100+ people I was there from 3 to 9.  Hard wind and rain about 4:30.  Jean getting Living Room and Dining Room curtains cleaned, getting rooms repainted [by] Chas Lewis and Terry.

Thursday 1992 - [Roberta leaves] Took Roberta to Columbus airport.  She was flying on a ticket she bought through a newspaper ad.  Roberta is a good inspiration for GHU.  Had supper at the Cracker Barrel, then 59¢ yogurt cup at Yummers.  My greens and ham ($2.89) came with a huge Vidalia onion and it was edible.

Saturday 1994 - [Roberta visiting] John, Julie, Kate and Roberta went to Cincinnati to see Jim Gooding and his recent purchase across the street from where he lives.  Their [John and Julie?] car is turning 100,000 miles, an '86 model.  The Crowsons have gone 64,000 miles in 14 months.  International Day at Wilmington College.  Jean is passing out cancer material.

Sunday 1995 - [Virginia to New Vienna] Drove to Morgantown WV, did see the Chi Omega House.  Had big ice cream cone at a place on Rt. 209 north of I-70 [near Cambridge OH].  Tried to call John and Julie without success.  Had a 4PM meal at Cracker Barrel, over 200 restaurants in 23 states [in 2009 had 594 locations in 41 states].  Got home about 5:30.

Wednesday 1997 - Jean had Women's Club program at Wooden Spoon, program was on "baths."  Putting data into Quicken program.  Was 19 degrees this am.  Put For Sale sign out in front of GHU's, asking $94,900.

Thursday 1998 - More rain, bad tornadoes in Alabama. Maundy Thursday services at Church.  Started Tom McMillian's [?] estate, he was 54.

Friday 1999 - [Home from Portugal/Spain trip]  Four stalks of asparagus up.  Mowed the high spots of grass.

Added in 2010: HH says he well remembers the Portugal/Spain trip -- they rented the car in Lisbon, drove to Salamanca to visit Nancy Walker and then made a big swing through southern Spain and back to Lisbon. Only car available was a stick shift and parking was practically non-existent. Also, for those wondering about Grandma (GHU) she entered Heartland on February 4, 1991, so 1990 would have been the year she had (mostly) full time help at home.

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Saturday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Sunday 1990 - Had Municipal Court hearing in Mason, then we had lunch at the Golden Lamb.  $7.10 was top entree.  Mother seemed better tonight, ate both banana and melon that we took over.

Saturday 1995 - [Virginia]  We drove to Richmond.  Jean fell down on the short steps at the Capitol and fractured her wrist.  We looked in the Jefferson Hotel, a grand lobby; Monument Avenue

Monday 1996 - Jean wrapping gifts for UMW meeting, Carolyn Thornburg was here and they blew up balloons for the meeting.  Put six names on our database.

Tuesday 1997 - Planted onions, and peas in the garden.

Wednesday 1998 - Parts of yard really need mowing.  Got big ?? [package?] from Rose Vesper and Doug White (our State Representative and State Senator) on our 50th Anniversary.  Jean had Womens' Club at Wooden Spoon.  Virginia Walker had program on "Random Acts of Kindness".  Got plaid wool pants dry cleaned, $2.97 with senior citizen discount.

Thursday 1999 - [Portugal to Ohio] Went cross country from Palmela to Lisbon airport, fortunately we made it safely.  Never did find the right road to Lisbon which is no pleasure to drive -- short ramps to freeway and many traffic circles.  Got into JFK and was too groggy to know that my watch was an hour off so missed our flight to CVG, so they routed us through Atlanta.  Finally got to Hilton at 2AM.

Muddy Trail

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Monday 1954 - [Rome, Europe Tour]

Wednesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Thursday 1990 - Canceled out with Carrs [GHU's brother Harry's step-daughter] on Sunday dinner, didn't think she [GHU] could stand the trip down there.  GG has been staying until 7PM to work on income tax.  Cleaned along the parking lot at the Bank.  Small fire at the house next to GHU.

Friday 1991 - Went to Lincoln program at Murphy Theatre.  Gary Kersey is organizer - Lincoln's Last Day.  43 people in the cast.  We took the Johnsons (our minister), made a stop at McDonald's afterwards.  The play had a sell out crowd on two nights.

Sunday 1992 - [Roberta visiting]  Brought GHU home for lunch, we had some more Alaska salmon.

Sunday 1992 - [Second entry with same date] Jean brought Mrs. Moore to see Mother.  She did well.

Monday 1993 - [to Ohio from Phoenix]  Flew home on Delta non-stop at 1:25, full plane.  Because of the airport construction a bus met us and took us to baggage area.  Serena met us.  She had been in Newark the day before for a shower for Julie.

Tuesday 1994 - Sankers, Pam, and her son Ben were here for a BIG lunch and a tour of Wells.  Jean went to Mothers' Club at Ponderosa.  Got the Annual Report of the NB&Trust Co.  Stock market up 80 points after a 10% sell off.

Wednesday 1995 - [Hot Springs VA to Virginia Beach] A big breakfast, again with piano music, don't think they have more than 50 guests out of a potential of say 1M [1000].  Had a tour of the building in the AM and then we left about noon, made a stop at Charlottesville and on to the Founders Inn in Virginia Beach.  The Homestead has been there since 1776, cost about $250, rates go up at the end of this month.  At Founders Inn we had room 3314 (278 miles from Homestead).  Supper at Swan Terrace Restaurant, [part of the Inn] too much food.  Room was $84 per night.

Saturday 1997 - [Phoenix]  Fresh snow at the Grand Canyon.  I did hike down to first rest area - about 1.5 miles, really a muddy trail.  We are in Room 6117 at the Bright Angel Lodge, $54 for double.  El Tovar standard rate is $112 and Deluxe is $167.  [Morgans took a group of foreign exchange students and were VERY nervous when several of them had not returned from hiking by dark -- they had decided to hike all the way to the river.  Morgans had Petra from Switzerland living with them.]

Sunday 1998 - [St. Clairesville OH to New Vienna]  We left the Hampton Inn in St. Clairesville OH and went to the 10:15 service at [Central] Trinity UMC in Zanesville.  We met John, Julie and Kate at Clark's [?] at US 40 and Rt. 13.  Changed plans to eat at Herb N Ewe at 11755 National Road in Thornville, just been open a few months, really on "old" US-40.  [Website says they are no longer open, closed as of the end of May in an unknown year.]  Got to New Vienna about 4pm.  More anniversary cards.  The children gave us a gift certificate to a B&B in Hocking Hills.

Monday 1999 - [Spain] At Hotel Becquer in Seville, step down to hotel garage.  Only place where they had a notice about not taking food from the dining room.  Had nice lunch in a nearby restaurant [possibly El Cairo].

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Sunday 1954 - [Naples to Rome, Europe Tour]

Tuesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Wednesday 1990 - Mother seems confused - "Oh, My" - wonders where she is.  Lions Club program of 2 Fairfield students [north of Cincinnati] on science projects.

Thursday 1991 - Quit using the "plunger" to feed Mother.  It takes an hour and a half to feed her.  Got letter from Frank about IBT trips -- he rubs Jean the wrong way.

Saturday 1992 - Nice breakfast at Murphin Ridge - Amish bread, big glass of fresh OJ, cantaloupe with kiwi and strawberries this with Vermont Molasses Cottage Cheese pancakes.  Drove to Columbus to meet Roberta at the airport, then to John and Julie's for lunch at 1030 Shaw Drive, their new home.  Julie is quite the chef -- asparagus with dried tomatoes and other things.  Came home via Hillsboro, GHU wide awake.

Sunday 1993 - [Arizona]

Monday 1994 - [to Ohio from Kentucky] Don was going to the Dr. -- he has a persistent cough and hard to keep food down.  We had lunch at the Heritage, only the bar area open at noon.  The gal brought us the wrong menu and then the wrong bill.  At UMC Board Meeting decided to go ahead with the SS room A.C.

Tuesday 1995 - [to Virginia]  We left at 9 and had lunch with Mary Ann Lewis at Bob Evans in Charleston [WV].  Jean had trouble recognizing her.  On to the Homestead [Resort in Hot Springs VA], a swim in their pool then dinner at 7:30, very formal with piano music.  Had movie at 9pm which didn't appeal to us.  [Added in 2011: We finally asked the head waiter if they knew Mary Ann Lewis and they did.  She was Peaches college friend, who has since passed on.]

Thursday 1996 - Jean has a cold.  Choir program for Maundy Thursday -- "Oh for the wonder of it all"

Friday 1997 - [Phoenix] Left for Grand Canyon, had lunch at Furr's in Flagstaff.

Saturday 1998 [Shepherdstown WV]

Sunday 1999 - [Easter, Granada Spain] [This entry could have taken place the day before or the day after, info about this trip is not necessarily date specific.]  Got up to Alcazar about 9AM and our admission time was 2:30.  No problem putting in time in other areas there.  Having Easter week parades with big crowds, reminded us of Ku Klux Klan parades.
