1983 Kate Foster letter - Aug. 10

Kate Foster, a childhood friend of Jean's from New Cumberland, writes a letter and the envelope includes the pictures shown below.  From the reading of the letter, the pictures may have been taken at a time after Aug. 1983.  Gerry and I enjoyed several visits with the Fosters during the last 25 years.  Prior to moving to southern Arizona, the Fosters lived in Ypsilanti, Michigan where Milt was a professor of English at Eastern Michigan University.  Transcription follows the pictures.

Dear Jean and Harold -

We will soon be on our way to Alaska and eagerly so because we've read Micheners Alaska and will look at everything with some idea of history and geography – and we will both relish the respite from a long, hot summer. - We've known several other couples like you who have enjoyed Elderhostel such as you described in Oregon - Someday we will have to try that, too.

Our summer has been full of swimming hiking seeing good movies (Like Chocolate, Like Water (Mexican), Line of Fire, Dave, Sleepless in Seattle), good books, good times with family - and trying to keep informed about what's going on nationally & internationally, and some letter writing.

We had one very nice week-end camping trip with our son and his daughter in an utterly beautiful spot, miles form anything or anyone, excepts some cows, in the San Rapheal Valley, very near the Mexican border.  My enthusiasm at the end of the trip more than made up for my lack of it in the beginning.

And just I began to feel completely passed by, by what was and was not happening within our church, we attended a Forum before our 10 o'clock service and found meaningful friends and leadership there.  Our new rector arrives Sept 1, and we have some reason to hope that he might be what we are looking for - or at the very least allow the Forum to resume its meetings under the leadership of the frail, but very dedicated & scholarly priest/university professor who had been leading it.

We should keep on trying to get together sometime here in Arizona - or elsewhere.  Let us know if you have any ideas.  Milton has tried out for the next play The Foreigner (by Larry Shue) which will be running in the middle of November.  I wouldn't be surprised if he got a part.  He will have more free time, after the play but whenever you can come we'd love to see you.

Love, Kate

Virginia Ballantyne Dailey 1914-1983

Less than two weeks before her 69th birthday, (Irene) Virginia Ballantyne Dailey – known to the Uible-Ballantyne cousins as "Aunt Virginia" suffered a stroke on Wednesday, August 10, and passed away later that evening. Though she had suffered in the years since her husband Jim's passing in July 1965, her death was unexpected.

The obituary is from an unknown newspaper, possibly the New Cumberland Hancock Courier, or a Pittsburgh newspaper.  Transcription and additional details follow as well as a picture of Virginia and her baby sister, Jean c1925.

1983 Virginia Ballantyne Dailey obituary

1983 Roberta's letter - Aug. 9

Busy as usual, in August 1983 Roberta finds time to write a letter on the back of a blank Coordinated Services System Client Information Document. Transcription follows.

8/9/83
Dear Family,

Please excuse the Stationary – and know it's the thought that counts!  Thanks for the recent family edition – great to get one – after many weeks of no Uible editions!  Tho – sure appreciate the postals!

Please!  Mail back the brown dog chewed paper – that looks like scrap paper w/phone #'s etc.  – Schuller's form letter.  I did send it my RSVP – hoping that a gal I met at the last conference can join me there.  You could RSVP for 1 or 2 – s I did for 2 people!  I'm wondering how many hundred will be there ?!?

We had our 2nd broken hip today – at Sr. Village.  1st one was to someone who had been here 1 day – this time was an ole boy – 92 years old – who moved in last Monday.  We had someone move out today (mutual request) and a lady leaving tomorrow for a nursing home – so constant change!

As of July 1st – everyone was considered new – so lots of paperwork was necessary!  I finally got it done very end of July!

It was an 8 part on each person – this form being 1 part – w/35 people – it was quite a JOB!!

We sold the VAN – had lots of troubles with it – and it had 50 miles to go on warranty.  Tho half the time what went wrong was not covered.  Bought a 1983 Omega Oldsmobile - mid size car - avg 26 mph.

Thx for the title on the car – I'd like to wait till September to change over – money tight this time of year!

Sure sounds like Mary Virginia has been busy helping someone move – good for her!  When does school start at Wilm C?  How many hours has M.V. been working at Extended Care?

I'm so glad Grandma will be out here for Christmas & most of January!  She will be an inspiration for all of residents!  Not to mention me & the dogs!

Love, Roberta

1963 Kim letter - Aug. 7

After a visit to New Vienna in late July 1963, Kim & Sang [Is Mrs. Kim's name Song or Sang??] send a letter.  First page and bottom of last page scanned below, written on stationary of the Cincinnati Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, the return address on the envelope is 911 Clinton Springs Ave., Cincinnati.   Transcription follows

Aug. 7, 1963

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Uible

How are you getting along?

I really must write to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at your house.

You were so very friendly and hospitable that we felt exactly as if we were in our own home.  It was such fun especially Sang visiting with you and your children and sharing your warm hospitality.  We shall always appreciate your kindness very much for such an enjoyable and unforgetable time.   We could never forget all you did for us.

I am very happy to tell you that since we came back home, we are getting along fine and trying to understand each other for everyday life.  I really don't mean to upset Sang so much but she was somehow hurt herself and, she was quite unhappy about everything.  Now everything is allright.  Start all over again.  We didn't discussed with anybody, just ourselves talk over everything and finally came through and seems to me settled.

Thank you so much that you gave us a lot of valuable advice and courage and affection.  We are sorry again we gave to you some worry and trouble.  Please forgive us.  No doubt.  It was will of God which gave us some temptation I believe.  Please pray for us and give us continuous advice & love.

We are looking forward to the day when we'll see you soon again.  May God richly bless all of you, and I send you our best regards, for the health and best wishes to all family.  Hello to Mr. Horton's family.

As we told you before, Sang brought from Korea some gift for you which Korean Tray.  It's not very good but I wish you will like it.  We are sending to you today this Tray for our (a little) appreciation.

Cordially yours, Sang & Kyung

1973 Catherine's Letter - Aug. 6

Family, including Grandma, is about to arrive for their visit in Sanford, Maine.  The house and the neighborhood are still much the same as they were 40 years ago, although a wooded area in the middle of the area NW of the house is now a park.  Transcription and map follow.

Monday Ju August 6, 1973

Dear Mom, Dad, John and Mary,

Hi!  It certainly was good talking to you on Friday night.  Quite a surprise.  I am enclosing a map so you should be able to find us either at home or at the library.  We eat supper at home from 4-5 and then I will probably be taking the evening off.  so I will be home after 4.

Yesterday we went to Greene, Maine (near Lewiston to visit a girl who went to K College, & library school and also worked at K.  She is now employed at a library in a junior college in Ironwood, Mich. but she is home for a weeks vacation.

I used our new washing machine this past weekend.  It works real well except for the wringers which are practically worthless.  We had to build a platform for the washing machine because the drain hose was too short to reach into the drain pipe.

Bought a used bicycle for $10.00 on Friday from the sister of a girl who works at the library.  Haven't ridden it too far yet as the tires each need about 20# of air.  At least now we can go riding together.

We're really enjoying this house as compared with the apartment.  The neighborhood is also nice without much traffic and noise.  We're also not far from the woods so it is possible to take the dog for walks and let her off the leash.  Be sure you bring some old clothes and shoes with you.  Also, I wanted to tell you that there is a public park a few miles from Sanford which has been especially designed for handicapped people.  The picnic tables are built special so that wheel chairs can be pulled up to them and there are nature trails designed especially for wheel chairs.  It was just built the early part of this summer so we haven't seen it but there has been quite a bit of publicity.

I thought I'd invite the Ballantyne's for a picnic supper on Sunday night.  Hope that meets with your approval.  [handwritten] or whenever they can come.

Well, it's getting to be breakfast time so I better sign off.  See you soon!

Love, X & Catherine

1973 Roberta's letter - Aug. 5

Roberta keeps the letters coming from Florida to Ohio.  Aunt Mary foresees MV's future musical accomplishments.  Transcription follows.

August 5, 1973

Dear Family,

Hi!!!  Hope all of you are fine. We got Mary V's and Grandma's letters yesterday.  Thanks.  Mary V . . . . Uncle Bill told me to tell you that he resented the fact that you wrote it just to "Aunt Mary and Roberta".  Aunt Mary is happy about your musical progress . . . . or whatever.  She says to keep up the good work and that you will really be dynamic in the years to come.

I guess the county fair is this week.  Mary V, did you get your free pass.  Also this week Serena gets home.  Aunt Mary has been reading the literature you sent us about Earlum [sic], and she thinks it sounds like a pretty good school.  I just wish it wasn't so hard to/ spell.  But, if you go there for four years I'm sure I'll be able to learn to spell it in that length of time.

I've really been riding the pink panther alot.  I've been riding it more in the evening when it is cooler, and I find that that is much better.  The more I ride it the better I'm gettingg to know Lake Worth . . . . . which I guess is good.

I just got back from Sunday Evening Service.  I don't think there were even twenty people there tonight.  But, Aunt Mary told me that there were about 280 people this morning in Church, which I guess is real good for this time of year.

Oh . . . . next Sunday I'm off from work.  The occasion . . . . Julie Wiget is coming down.  It's the first Sunday I've been off since sometime in April so I'm really looking forward to it.  Then starting next Monday I'm going to be off Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.  So . . . . . . I imagine those tree days we will go to Disney World and then to Tampa, and then back home.  We'll probably do what we did Mary  Virginia about going to Disney World.  I'm really looking forward to going back.  Julie will just be xxx staying a week.  I must say, she gets around to doing things . . . . . alot more so than her parents, who haven't even made it to Florida yet themselves.  She said she had to change planes in Atlanta but she isn't scared since she has experience behind her.

I've made my reservations to fly home.  It will be on September 3rd (Monday).  I leave West Palm at eight that morning and will get to Cincinnati 11:29. I hope that that time and day will fit into to yoiu all's schedule as to coming and picking me up.  I decided that one would be better than the 1:30 A.M. flight !!!!!  I'm planning on working up through the 2nd of September.  I'll fill your in on flight numbers, etc as the time gets closer.

This Wednesday Jill (a girl from work) and I are to go shopping down at the Pompano Mall.  I'm not sure if I'll buy anything yeto or not.

This week I work a pretty full week, with Wednesday and Friday off.  Won't be able to go to Weight Watchers till Friday morning as I have to be at work early (9:40) every morning.  Which I guess is just as good because I went on Friday last week.  This week will be my 16th week in it.  Wow . . . . . what an investment . . . . .

We saw a program on the television the other night about Peru and alot of the places you all talked about.  I'm not even going to try to spell them!!!  It was really an interesting program, did you all see it by chance?????  Have you been able to see Larry's pictures, I imagine he has got some good ones.

Well, I better close.  Welcome back to the states, Serena, and most of all to New Vienna!!!!!  Will I see you in September????

Love, Berta

1983 Catherine's Letter - Aug. 2

August 2, 1983

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  I thought I'd see if this typewriter still works.  It has its problems.  It originally belonged to the library but was supposedly dropped on the floor by some former employee and then sat in the back room at the library for several years until I resurrected it and had it repaired.  It works (most of the time) but is very temperxmental.

It was good x talking to you both on Sunday.  We did go to the Cove shortly after that.  After we got back home we had a terrible hail storm (it hit only Madras, we heard later that the Cove & Culver area didn't even get any rain.)  We had 1½ of rain in about 45 minutes causing flooding in downtown Madras and the hail damaged several area crops.  Some of the hail was as big as ping pong balls.  Our grass was completely covered with hail.  It seemed especially amazing as it been so hot during the day.  The temperature went from 98º to 49º.  The water came up to the door at the library but stayed outside.  Our street in front of the house was completely covered with water and it was flowing over the curb on the other side of the street.  Glad we live on the high side!  Our garden plants were damaged but not too severely.  The squash leaves got a little shredded and the tomatoes lost some foliage.

We are looking forward to going rafting this weekend possibly a short trip on Saturday and a long trip on Sunday.  Wendy would go with us on Sat. and stay with a friend on Sunday.  The Saturday trip is pretty definite but we aren't sure about Sunday yet.

The library has been very busy this summer.  We had 180 in our Summer Reading Program "Reading Makes Pictures in Your Mind."  We just had our end of the program part on Friday.  We had prized donated by local businesses and everybody got a paperback book.  The books were bought with money donated by organizations and other businesses.  Wendy got a Berenstain Bears  book, a jawbreaker, some balloons (also for everyone), a free ice cream from the Dairy Queen and a free pass to the movies.  It seemed to go pretty well but of course there are always things we can improve on for next year.

We have an extra employee at the library through Sept. who is paid by the government work experience program.  She is 18 and just graduated from Culver H.S.  She is a good worker but is only capable of doing some things.  (She can't type, for instance).  Debbie is going back to school the end of September, she will be a Junior at George Fox College after taking two years off to work at the Madras Library.  She hopes to go on to get her library degree.  I'm not sure what I am going todo yet as the Carla (the new girl) is willing to work but is probably only capable of doing about half of what Debbie has been doing.  I may have Carla work about 20 hours and get somebody else to work the other 20.

Well, I need to get ready for work so better be closing.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry, DeeDee & Wendy

Interesting town w/library & a museum built by men who had collected $60,000 by picking up tin cans.  The John Uibles & Ashcrafts left last nite after Mary's special birthday dinner as they were already part way & had to be at Oakland airport at 10 A.M. & was told the traffic wold be bad in AM going there.

Interesting library open 10-2 some days & others 2-6.  Museum had unusual exhibits.

You all were missed & they hope you make the next one.  Love, Mother & Dad

1963 Jean's letter to Catherine - July 31

Appreciate all those letters through the years but especially those which came while we were away from home. Transcription follows.

[postmarked 31 July 1963]

Dearest Catherine,

Kim and Song arrived about 11:30 yesterday morning.  Daddy, Roberta, Serena & John picked them up at the Wilmington bus station.

After lunch they rode out to Hauses & spent most of the afternoon.  We went out to Shaffer's & Kim, Roberta & Serena swam but it was getting so cool - the rest of us just waited on the beach.  We had taken peppers stuffed with corned beef hash (really stayed hot in the Penguin cooler-heater). + other things.  Shaffer's had company but came out just as we had finished eating.  Cheryl plans to go with them to Mammoth Cave.

Debra Brumley signed the treasurer's report & tried to reach Shirley Bernard 3 times but no answer.

I talked to her later & she said each club would get about $7.15 so we used that amount and mailed your book in this morning to the Agricultural Extension office.  So at least you made some profit this year.

Shirley & Linda stopped later with your fair ticket.  They said Lydia Messimer was in town for short time and had ridden in to see her at Shela's.  Someone called you – perhaps Shela & she said she had forgotten you were at camp.

We miss you & sorry you are missing Kim & Song but perhaps they'll still be here.

Love and xxxxx, Daddy & Mother

[written on left margin] Planning on picnic with the Hauses tomorrow evening.

1983 Family Letter - July 31

Sunday -
July 31, 1983

Dearest Family --

This seems like the first letter we have written to ALL of you for a long time.  We really appreciated hearing from you that wrote while we were gone and the calls when we got back.  We had a really wonderful trip and thoroughly enjoyed the Elderhosteling, the Scandinavian countries and getting back home as well.  Serena came home the same weekend to attend ther [sic] 10th  anniversary of her graduation from East Clinton.  (They had a big party at Buckeye Lodge followed by an early morning breakfast (Sunday) so we saw her Sunday afternoon & she took off for Chicago Sunday evening.  On way here she had two more flat tires so left the Dodge Dart to have the alignment checked as we had just gotten the Dart retired (2 new - 2 almost new when she was home in June.)  Th_ought the tires might have been stolen & replaces with old one but Bartleys say no.  Anyway she got back to Chicago safely and is waiting now to hear if John Marshall Law School will have a place for her next year in Jan. so we are rooting for that.

Mary Virginia and Mie Young got along fine while we were gone - even xxx found time in their busy schedules to each paint their own rooms which badly needed it.  Mie Young has been busy this past week getting In Young ready to go back to Korea.  Her visa ran out & she wasn't able to renew it as she is not a college student.  Her parents hope to work things out to come to this country to live soon - perhaps this fall so she left many of her things at Hannah's.

Mary Virginia has been busy helping a lady in Wilmington go through things so that she can move into Quaker Center.  She helped her every day this past week plus did yard work on several Saturdays for another lady plus working a good many hours at Wilmington Health Care (formerly Extended Care).  With those going on vacation she is working full time now.

The clerk of the Board of Commissioners was married last night at the Wilmington Baptist Church so we attended our first wedding in that church.  The reception was held at Snow Hill Country Club afterwards & they really had a full house.  It has been super hot so we didn't stary for the whole evening - MV said the honeymooner's car + others were still there when she came home from work last night.  It was a lovely occasion & better refreshments than usual for Snow Hill - Lots of h'ordoevres, [sic] etc.

Our attendance at Sunday School and church have really been down as at many churches but today we had a baptism - Charlie & Joanie Collier's 9 month old little boy with many relatives attending.  Carolyn C asked especially to be remembered to you, Catherine and hopes to see you sometime when you are home.

The Hortons (Aunt Mary & Uncle Bill) arrived last Sunday evening at G'ma's having visited with the Kintners and left to spend the weekend with Cris and Angela before returning home - gone since June 23rd.  It was good to see them for afraid they would have returned before we got back.  They enjoyed their bus trip + boats trips with group they met in Harrisburg and went to Nova Scotia via the Bay of Fundyl.  They also had a congenieal group similar to Elderhostel but were affiliated with Days Inn's September _____?______.

We all went ona [sic] picnic at Lake Cowan on Wednesday evening and then to Wilmington College to see a preview of Jesus Christ Superstar, which was very well done.  On the picnic we found a grill that someone had left with great charcoal for our meat.  Hamburger has been on sale here for 99¢ a # this past week.

Mie Young has bought a '81 Ford Pinto and is getting along great with her summer job at Wilmington College.  The Bengal practice is in full swing here.

[Love, etc.]

Dearest Wendy –
We're enjoying the School of Christian Mission (our 4th).  Your Mother should remember this Main bldg except there are no thru streets anymore all over campus.  I looked for an overall view & they didn't have any.  Hope you are feeling much better.

Much love, G'dad & G'ma U.

1963 Catherine's Half Birthday - July 29

Of all the days
May Your [½] Birthday be
The happiest day of all,
And may the year that follows
Be happiest to recall!

Love and XXXXX  Mother and Daddy, Roberta, Serena and John

Summer of 1963, following the New England trip, Catherine attended [pre] 9th Grade Camp at the Methodist Camp Ground in Sabina.  This former camp ground, is now a housing development, and as I recall hearing had previously been a race track.  [I'm still trying to find out where the race track was in New Vienna as there are references to such a place.]  Transcription follows.

1972 Roberta's letter - July 29

Roberta continues her summer Europe tour. Transcription follows.

July 29, 1972

Dear Family,

Hi!  I've got about a half hour before we leave on the 2nd half of our sight-seeing so thought I would at least get this started.

The "other half" of sight-seeing was last yesterday morning.  We didn't get out of the bus too often tho because it was really raining hard!  Yesterday we saw St. Stevens Cathedral, Hofburg Palace and the University of Vienna.  I really like Vienna - but right now the city is really a Big Mess because they are building a subway system.

St. Stevens was really pretty – especially inside – was built in something like 1147.  We also visited a petit needle point factory - I couldn't believe it - something like 2000 stitches in a square inch!  The purses were so beautiful there – ranging anywhere in price from $50.00-$250.00 !!  They said the women could only work about 2 hours a day or there eyesight would go terrible.  I guess I wouldn't mind those working hours !!

Hi - (again) just got back from the Strauss Waltz Concert – it was really nice - really a fancy place.  We made the mistake of ordering cokes – without asking the price - well - they cost almost $1.50 in American money.  I thought I was going to die when the waiter told us – we made those cokes last a LONG time !!  It was really something just to sit back and listen to the music, and think where we are, etc.

This afternoon we went to the Spanish Riding School – we got to see the horses & also the hall where they show the horses - but no special program because the horses are on "vacation" for the summer.

We also went to Schonbrunn – really beautiful.  Reminded me alot of Versailles - but the room in it were furnished more.  The gardens were really pretty too !  A nice summer palace !!

They (our tour guide & other I.S.E. people) have got us all scared about going into Czechoslovakia tomorrow.  Like they will probably search us, our suitcases, etc. etc.  Also they told us that men will be standing there with machine guns, etc.  OH!  My picture for my visa were NOT accepted so I had to go to the railroad station today to get others.  But the RR station isn't far from where we are staying and the pictures were pretty cheap.  Quite a few of us had to get other pictures.  As usual I've got to repack - I'll sure be glad to get home - I'm getting tired of living out of a suitcase !  Of course what-ever you need is always at the bottom of the suitcase !!

I hope John you are feeling much better !!  I'll see you in less than two weeks!  Whoop-dee-doo !!  (Spelling?)  I hope everyone is fine !!

I'm not going to change any money over in Czech so no mail for the next couple of days.  The Communists aren't going to get any of my money !!!  Love to all, Bert

1973 Catherine's letter - July 27

Catherine and X are in the process of moving from their country apartment to a rental house in Sanford, Maine. Transcription follows.

Friday morning,July 27, 1973

Dear Mom, Dad, John and Mary,

Hi!  It was a surprise to get your letter from Florida.  Hope John is all better by now.

We are in the process of moving so things are rather hectic.  We've got about half of our stuff here and half at the other place.  We have to be out of this apartment by August 1 so we still have a few days to haul the rest of our stuff into town.  Most of what we have left is furniture.  I hope that we can be more or less settled by the time you come.

Speaking of you coming, are you flying to Boston or Portland?  Please send the details so we can be there to meet you.  I am still unclear as to whether you want me to get a wheelchair for Grandma or will she be bringing hers?

There is an opening for the a librarian at the High School in Biddeford which the librarian at then high school here suggested that I apply for, however I decided i D didn't really want the job.  The hours would be far different from X's plus it would be a 15-20 mile drive from Sanford.

Friday afternoon

As I mentioned before about things being hectic here, X found out today his budget for next year is due on the 15th, he's scheduled to speak at the Kiwanis on the 8th, and he has some major policies to make before the next board meeting on the 9th.  There is the one advantage of both of us working there that I can keep the everyday things going while he works on the more major stuff.  It's getting harder to keep the everyday things running smoothly as one of the staff is out with ulcer problems (she has been out since July 1 and won't be back until September at the earliest), another of the staff, (the children's librarian) has strep throat and has been sick all week, plus the lady who is in charge of adult circulation is going on vacation.  Just hope that nobody else gets sick.

Saturday afternoon

Well, I think maybe we'll move the typewriter now so I better finish.  The chair that was here is already gone.  Write soon and give us the details of your plans.

Love, Catherine and X
