1980 Family Letter to Mie Young & Family -July 30

Tuesday --
July 30, 1980
Dear Kim, Mie Young and all -

We are really looking forward to Mie Young's visit and do hope and pray that all goes well for her coming and stay with us.  Perhaps Mary Virginia has already written you in regard to the date of her arrival.  The Ohio Youth Choir in which Mary Virginia is participating is not disbanded until Sunday, August 24th, so wonder if that wouldn't be a good day for Mie Young's coming into Columbus.  I do regret that they both won't be here when school begins August 19th but as we won't be home either it is the only way we see that things could be arranged.

Traveling by bus does give one a much better idea of the immenseness of the United States but there are disadvantages too especially for a young girl traveling by herself and perhaps not being too sure of the language might present some difficulties.  I would hesitate to send Mary Virginia that way under similar circumstances but this is just my suggestion -- AmTrak (train) would be an idea in that she would be able to get her meals and get more personal attention under the circumstances.  Our daughter Serena might be able to meet her in Chicago and see that she gets on a bus or another train for the rest of the trip.  But John says that AmTrak no longer stops in Columbus.  This is just an idea.  When buying her ticket (air) it might be much more reasonable to buy the whole way (with stops) than to purchase the transportation separately.

Don't worry about Mie Young's expenses as far as room and board are concerned.  We will let you take care of her traveling and clothing allowances but that should be minimal once she arrives here.  Casual clothing such as jeans and t-shirts are okay for school and MV wears mostly skirts and blouses and jackets and in cold weather slacks even to church.  No doubt she has written Mie Young about clothes.  I don't know how severe the winters are in Seoul but we have had two bad ones out of three in the last couple of years.  Last winter was mild compared to the two previous ones and hope this one coming up will be like it.

We leave this Thursday for Hawaii and plan to attend the meetings of the American Bar Association there and then spend a little less than two weeks with Catherine and her family in Oregon.  She and her husband Gerry have a little girl, Wendy, who will be three in September.  A daughter by Gerry's previous marriage is also spending the summer with them.

Roberta was just here for a week and just drove back to Arizona getting there last night.  It has been over 100ยบ there most of the summer and we had a real hot spell while she was here but the humidity is so much higher here.

Serena arrived the day Roberta left -- too bad that Roberta couldn't have stayed longer as they didn't get to see each other.  Serena is going back this weekend -- she lives in Chicago and works at the Loyola University library there.

John and Carol were down this last Saturday -- they live in Newark, Ohio, where John works in a bank so we get to see them more of them than the other three.

Mother Uible was in the hospital in June for an operation but is doing fine now -- still confined to a wheelchair but insists on living alone in her big house on Main Street.

This summer has gone by so quickly with so much company and things going on but we are looking forward to having Mie Young with us and will be waiting to hear more about the actual time of her arrival.

With Love,
