Dear Dad,

I didn't realize that Father's Day was approaching so soon.  I wondered whether you are in Ohio or in Oregon.  Happy Father's Day wherever you are.

Arrived in Stockholm this morning.  Walked around all day -- leaving on a night train tonight for Norway.  Travelling with a nice fellow from Alabama who has his Ph.D. in Medicine.  I'll be in England a week from today.  See you soon.

Love, John

1979 Family Letter -June 11

Monday --
June 11, 1979
Dearest Family -

Well we are little earlier this week in writing but it may be short.  The big news is that Mary Virginia finally is feeling better -- after going to Clinton Memorial Hospital and having two operations in two days and the cause of her trouble is or was a ruptured appendix.  The first operation was Saturday morning and then they just found an abscess with about a pint of pus in it and after much discussion and bleeding (on her part) they went back in surgery for a couple of hours and they found the bad appendix and more abscesses and more drainage so she should soon begin to feel better.  She is on IVs and has at least four pints of blood given to her by some generous donor and as soon as they remove the catheter and let her have some liquid other than intravenously she will be much happier.

John all this brings back memories of the time that you were in the hospital with only me around for consolation.  I'm really thankful that Dad is here and Roberta got home Thursday evening and has been a great help too.  Now it is John that is in Europe (Roberta was there in '72 when John was feeling so low with typhoid and Serena was in South America).  Catherine is further this time and Serena is half way there, across country.

The doctor has suggested that we give up going to Oregon at least next week but Dad called and found that we could cancel two or three days before hand so he is his usual super-optimistic self.  At least we will not be driving to Chicago on the 20th. and we'll let you know more definitely about the rest of the trip.  Dad has reservations to be in Madison for the American Law Institute ABA course beginning June 25 and the rest is hanging in mid air.  He had said that he would be glad to pick you up the following Saturday in DeKalb, Serena but that depends on whether your friend is there among other things.

John, we have gotten several cards from you and others have mentioned getting cards from you too.  Roberta thought she was talking to Carol Wise the other day until she mentioned that she got a card  from you with a picture which reminded you of their home - (castle) and we told her it was Georgialia Hannah.  She came out to the car to see Mary Va after one of our trips to the doctor and Jim Wise that she remembers the first time she ever came to New Vienna - April 3, 1977, I believe as we had gone to the Golden Lamb for our anniversary celebration and then Dad rushed home for a special meeting with our future minister.  Dad invited them home for supper and I never had so little in the house to fix so quickly!!

Roberta has been going over every morning to stay with Mary Va. during the day while I come home after being there all night, do a few things at home and perhaps take a nap and then go back for another 15 hours or so.

It is now TUESDAY AFTERNOON and evidently Dad had other things on his mind last night and wasn't about -- Dad is now reading this for the first time.  After getting back from the hospital yesterday evening I went down to Wells for a few minutes and the next thing you know it is 11 P.M. which is more than bed time if I expect to have any ZIP the next morning.  In the rubber and die cast areas we have been working two 12 hour shifts to build up stock as we are going to do some rearranging in July to make it more efficient.  The first week of July is vacation time, but with the end of the fiscal year there is always plenty of work in the office to be done.

Read in the News-Journal tonight about a 60-year old man who is going to pedal a bike from Forida to Maine, plans to average better than a 100 Miles a day, so there is hope for me.  The article said earlier he had rode a bike from Florence, Oregon to Mass.  [It was just less than 10 years later that Dad (at age 63) made his cross-country bike trip from San Diego to Jacksonville FL in April-May 1989]

Our cherries are turning red and the birds are there to grab them, they are nice to mince on when working in the garden.  It is light till 9 P.M. so really have no excuse not to have a better garden.

Love,
All the Family

1969 Roberta's Letter -June 10

[Written on the back of the envelope:]  "Are you ready for this??  Well.  OF COURSE!!"

June 10, 1969
Dear Family,

Well, Two days of work down.  Only three more days till PAY day!  Ha!

Everything is fine here.  The weather is getting HOT -- and you'll never believe this but I'm coming down -- already have -- a cold!!  It's just a little old thing.  The air conditioning was on -- at the shop -- I think that helped out a little (in getting my cold).

Miller & Turner called up and told me my ring was there.  We went over and got it.  It fits me perfect!!  Can you believe it??

OH.  Yes -- thanks alot for the post card from Columbus.  I'm glad you made it that far.  Yes??

John you have a lot of mail here.  You have one letter from the Louisiana Tourist Developmental Commission -- it's medium thick.  Also a large yellow note-book size envelope from the state of Connecticut Development Commission.  Also a extra large brown envelope -- notebook size -- from the Falcon Books, Katonah, New York.

There is the usual pile of newspapers.

They got Daddy's office painted.  It looks real nice!!  But, just can't wait till they get that carpet in there.  HA! HA!

Elizabeth and Oscar, Mrs. Will. Thornburg have been here getting strawberries.  Mrs. Thornburg said she put up  5  quarts for us.  Can you believe that?  Now, can you beat that?

Saturday nite they thought someone broke into the bank.  But they found later they FORGOT to lock the door!!  Poor Mr. Brumley will never live that down!!  HA!

Vanessa is staying here now.  Sharon wore me out.  She kept me up till WAY WAY late Sunday nite!  Then Monday she said she would take the door key and came in LATER -- I told her -- NO DEAL.  I went to see Vanessa.  So now she is over here.  That is OK -- isn't it??  She can go to bed early and still sleep all day long too -- it's quite a talent.  But lunch has been ready for me -- it's been VERY GOOD -- so far.  HA!

The dog and fishes are fine and well fed.  Wiggles make enough NOISE for a dozen dogs.

Well.  I've got to get to bed -- morning comes early enough the way it is now.

Have fun.  All is fine.

Love,
Roberta

1949 Jean's Letter to HH -June 7

Tuesday
June 7, 1949
Dearest Honeybunch,

Catherine was just tucked away for the night - still in her bassinet -- with her head almost up & over the top of it -- thinking of her Daddy -- for it's been quite awhile since we have seen him.

Bob and Mrs. Cochran came down today and will be here overnight.  The upholstery on his car is wearing so he left it in East Liverpool to be fixed & they loaned him another.  He isn't feeling as well - quite uncomfortable alot of the time.  Then too he's worried about the plant.  Frank Dailey -- Rosalie's husband -- might become Salesman for the W.Va. Fire Clay Mfg. Co.  Pat Kessel is helping in the office but they used someone older  to take care of things -- Uncle Alex isn't feeling well & unable to do very much.

So many people have said that Catherine is beginning to look like her handsome father.  When she woke up Friday afternoon -- the day you left -- I thought she was a picture of you and we've been seeing more and more resemblances each day.

There's a strawberry festival up at the Church this Friday night -- they plan to have baked beans, potato salad, ham sandwiches, ice cream, coffee and believe-it-or-not strawberries.  I'm not trying to make you hungry, honestly.  It just so happens that that same night Virginia wants us to come to Pittsburgh for "The Song of Norway."  I've told her that you & I already saw it but she wants Mother to go.

I meant to tell you how much I appreciated hearing when you're so busy & it was so thoughtful of you to remember how long its been since you've been unchained [?] in one way or another.

When you move you might send your telephone number and the name of the housemother there just in case we might need to get in touch with you in a hurry.  Will Calvin be there after Thursday or will he be gong to New Vienna then/

Bob and Mrs. Cochran just left so we will begin to get some things done again.  We have ironing from way back in the beginning of the washings  -- not very much from any one wash but all collected make a sizable day's work.

Do you know I wrote down your Mother's birthday & father & mother's anniversary & am at a loss still as to which one is June 9th.  I'm sending a card but please don't mention my weakness of mind.

We had a long letter from Sarah Hinerman which Mother was reading to me while I ws nursing Catherine.  When Mother started on the part about what a darling Catherine is, she raised up and cooed and crowed so you see what a superior baby we have.

Catherine's in bed again for the night and put up quite a howl -- for her Daddy, of course.  I painted the crib today but it is so spotty the painter will have to put another coat on tomorrow.

Bob took our car to Liverpool to have it gone over -- emergency brake, left front fender fixed, etc. so will take the car they loaned Bob up & exchange it Friday on our way to Pittsburgh.

In everything we do we miss you so and anxious to have you with us again even for the few hours.  Catherine is saving her tricks & teeth for the occasion.

Thanks for the card which came in this morning's mail.  Hope to find you weight and fate in good condition.

All of our very best love, Honeybunch II, Honeybunch III & maybe Honeybunch IV

1969 Roberta's Letter -June 8

June 8, 1969
Dear Family,

Well.  It sure has been a Big day.  Church was terribly emotional.  We sang that song at the end of church -- "Bless be the tie that Binds."  All these people started crying.  It's a Good thing it only happens every few years.  HA!

At about 12:00 noon Vanessa called and wanted to know if I could come over.  Carl Stokes completely left my mind!!  Well, I went to her house.  We went to -- and you won't believe this -- Chillicothe (spelling?) We saw all these historical sights.  Yes -- US TWO.  On the way back we stopped at Rocky Fork -- Fun in the Sun -- They have a miniature golf place there.  We didn't play -- simply watched.  Then we went on to Pike Lake.  Wow!  It had been a LONG time since I was there.  People were all over.  Deep inside I wanted that swim suit of mine on!!

Next stop was Bainbridge.  There was a dental place there.  It wasn't opened though.  In Hillsboro I stopped at Aunt Mary H's place.  But of course, she wasn't at home.

It has been raining off & on all day today.  I hope you all have better weather.

OH!  Nancy told me today that she could -- NOT stay with me at night.  She had to baby-sit during the day!! I told her I had counted on HER!  Well -- Now don't worry about your little 18 year old daughter.  Sharon S. is staying tonight.  There is not one thing in the world to worry about!!  Sharon will probably stay all week.

Well -- say Hello to the Beers, Kuntzmans, Schamauns, Steels, and all our other old ministers for me.

You all better write me.  I don't write for nothing you know.

Also the Volkswagen is NOT working properly.  It still has a mind of its own.  I think I'll take it to Shell and let them try and tell me the 'thing' is fine !!  HA!

It's 8:45 (PM) and I'm about ready to go to Bed!  Sharon just told me I must be kidding.

Love,
Roberta

1979 Family Letter -June 6

Wednesday evening
June 6, 1979
Dearest Family -

This letter is late being written for a variety of reasons but hope that you will excuse them all.  The main one is that Mary Virginia hasn't felt good and we have made several trips to the doctor or health related institution in the last week.

We did go to Pittsburgh on Memorial Day - ten of us in three cars and managed to stay together very well.  The sessions started that evening and ran through Friday evening and included a program at the Civic Arena on Saturday called Jesus '79 to celebrate Pentecost in 28 cities around the country.  They had some outstanding speakers and one could choose four classes a day from about 14 different ones.  There were also a variety of speakers each evening.

Mary Virginia felt pretty good until Wednesday and from then on until now she has felt progressively worse with stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting, etc.  I got some medicine from the University (Duquesne) Health Service but it didn't seem to help so we ended up taking her to Mercy Hospital via the emergency squad.  There they tested her but released her with another prescription which she finished taking but still not feeling any better.  So yesterday we went to Hillsboro to see Dr. Paul Terrell but after waiting for 1 1/2 hours came back home as MV was so uncomfortable and he hadn't come back to the office.  She felt some better this morning but after taking a bath felt her old miserable self so got her an appointment in Wilmington with Dr. Bath (young Ed) and he really impressed both of us and we were out with a couple of prescriptions and word that they would let us know the results of blood tests tomorrow.  If she doesn't feel much better by Friday we are to go back.

Vacation Bible School started Monday and because they were short-staffed I have been acting as secretary so can go later and leave earlier than the rest.  Collection take is to go to Donnie Achor.  There were 78 children today and 25 helpers (teachers, assistants and song leaders, etc.)  The final program is to be Friday evening.

The saddest news around here is the double fatality - Leanne Burke's sister and brother were in an automobile accident Friday evening.  Her sister is Mary Virginia's age - Kathleen, and her brother is Jimmy, 11.  It happened at the corner of George Henderson's at Rt. 73 and Nordyke Road.  Leanne was rooming with Mary Virginia at the Pittsburgh Conference so we got the word through the State Patrol.  Four of them took her back home early Saturday morning so it was a sad ending to an otherwise nice week.  The driver of the car involved in which the Burkes were riding was Sharon (?) Erxleben from Sabina.  The other car involved was not too bad as the occupants were treated and released from Clinton Memorial.  Sharon was taken there and then moved to Kettering for more surgery.

It was good talking to you on the phone, Serena and glad that you arrived safely in Ft. Dodge.  Appreciated your card and letter, Catherine and your letters, Roberta.  Looking forward to having Roberta home this coming weekend.  Mailed a letter to you, John, in Pittsburgh but realized later that it lacked one cent stamp of having enough postage so do hope that you get it.  Your letter came last Saturday and we got a card from you yesterday from Wurtzburg (spelling?).  We will add a note on our comments and more later about this.  Mary Virginia had a pile of mail including a letter from Carol and heard that she called her while we were gone.  Jane Burdette from Nashville also called to get more information about the Burke tragedy and invited her to come down.

We have been enjoying fresh strawberries out of the garden and see the cherries about ready to pick.  Put out some twenty tomato plants, which the birds have been picking away on, but some will make it.

Last Week Dad went to Cincy on two days for the IBM computer school.  They made the statement that at first they sold the unit on the basis that anyone could operate it, but said they now advertise that you do need some training.

[Love to all, etc.]

1979 Family Letter -May 27

[Note: This "p.2" had been connected with a letter from June 6, but in the process of transcribing realized that everything on p.2 had happened the week prior to the letter of June 6.  Evidently the first page of this letter is missing.]

. . . . Tomorrow Mary Virginia and I are going to Pittsburgh with seven others from New Vienna for the GREATER PITTSBURGH NCHARISMATIC CONVENTION I think it is called.  We are to be at Duquesne University for almost a week.  Then I hope to bring Aunt Virginia back home with us.  There are others going from Hillsboro and Wilmington so guess they come from all over - Georgialea Hannah, Doris Martin, Carol Wise, Joanne Rankin, Leanne Burke (MV's friend), and Fay Newsom are the ones from New Vienna.

Heard that Patty Walker was in the hospital to have a couple of lumps removed - her mother postponed her trip to Spain for a week or so as her sister's husband had another heart attack so Mrs. Stegman isn't going.  Jack's sister wanted to go in her place but was afraid she wouldn't get her passport in time.  So guess Va. is going by herself.  Nancy is to meet her in Madrid.

Saw Kenny Hughes while I was visiting at Clinton Memorial Hospital.  He told me that his wife had had a 2nd little girl - Laura told me yesterday that she had had her at home while Kenny went next door to get someone to stay with the first child.  No trouble at all but went to the hospital afterwards and was charged the same as if she had been born there.

Was surprised to see Danny Custis and his wife at our church this morning - they have moved into the Custis house on Rt. 28 where he and his parents used to live.  She sounded like they would be coming back regularly.

Got about a 32-page brochure about ELDERHOSTELS which offer college courses during the summer for older people - found you had to be 60+ but found it interesting reading.  It was advertised in the library with a postcard you could send for more information.  Very reasonable and worth looking into in a couple of years - one spouse has to be 60.  Catherine and Gerry and Wendy, do you know High Country School at Cove Palisades State Park?  Also see that Iowa Central Community College at Fort Dodge has some courses available.  Most of these range from $95 to $115.

Glad to see that United Airlines are back in business, as that is what your Mother's and M.V.'s tickets call for on the 21st of June.  We will be driving to Chicago a day or so before, then meeting back there on Saturday, June 30th.  Serena, can you meet us in Chicago or I could come back to Chicago via Rockford, Ill. if that would be better for you than Chicago.  The plane reservation back to Chicago from Portland gets in around 7 P.M. and have made reservations at the Marriott Motel for Sat. and Sun (the weekend special) which is near the airport.  Then depending on the gas situation we can drive out to Iowa with Serena on Monday or whatever works out best.

Thanks for the bus schedules in and out of Madras - we still may use them especially going back to Portland for think that is an imposition to have you going that far and we won't have as much luggage then.

Monday Morning:  Everybody up and at them at 5:30.  The folks [Jean, MV and others] will have an interesting trip to Pittsburgh.  On the home scene we [Wells people] go to the computer IBM school for two days.

Love,

All the Family

Grandma & Grandad,

The car broke down about 10 miles before Mansfield.  We got here about nine oclock.  Having fun. love it while it lasts
 Roberta

Note:  Thought that this postcard was from 1969 but since Granddad died in January 1969, a closer study of the postmark determines it was more likely 1965.  Postage rates confirm it was between January 7 1963 when the postcard rate was raised to 4-cents.  That rate was in effect until January 7, 1968 when the rate went up to 5-cents.

Dear Bert,

Left here this morning.  Spent 1 1/2 hours in Innsbruck - enough time to tour Hofburg castle of Maria Theresa.  Right now I'm eating lunch on train to Salzburg where I plan to stay several days, spent only two days in Germany.  Must devote an entire trip to Germany sometime.  Hope you and Grandma have a wonderful trip to N.E.  I will call Wells (Dad) the day I land in NYC - then you'll know I'll be at the farm.  Love, John

1949 Jean's Birthday Card to her mother -May23

Lucie Sarah Brown Ballantyne, mother of Jean Wallace Ballantyne Uible
May 23, 1880 - February 1, 1957

[Card sent in honor of Lucie's 69th Birthday]

May 23, 1949

We've been quite busy with plumbers and company but most is over now.  Jeanne was over Thursday night and saw Catherine & the play pen in action -- thanks so much.  It arrived Wednesday & has been in almost constant use ever since.

Friday Misses Stromfors, Frew and Brinton -- all co-workers from North Branch came over for the evening.

Yesterday (Saturday) Linn Zook stopped and Lillian Plotkin came to see the baby & bid us farewell.  She stayed for dinner & left about 11:00 P.M.

This afternoon Luke Giles is to study with Harold and his wife Molly is coming with him to see Catherine.  Later this evening Jean Ryan is to come.  So I feel as if we've been having open house since Thursday.

Do hope everything is OK with Daddy but I'm glad he's going to have a check-up for we are anxious about his leg.  Please let us know what report the doctor gives.

Bill is coming up Monday we think & we will be leaving here Tuesday.  As much as we'd like to help out I'm afraid Pittsburgh will be slightly out of the way.  Besides we could use it in New Cumberland during June, couldn't we.  It shouldn't be too hard to dismantle.  [the playpen??]

Thursday when I took Catherine to the doctor, it was such a nice looking day that I wheeled her in the carriage but it rained before we got home.

Dr. Bowen gave her -- her first shot -- a combination of whooping cough, diptheria and tetanus.  She was real good although quite fussy yesterday from it.

Catherine now weighs (or did as of noon Thurs.) -- 14 lbs. 5 oz. and has started on strained foods -- carrots and peas so far & enjoys them immensely.

Today we're trying her out on a schedule of 3 meals a day and she also is back on orange juice as long as it seems to agree with her.

Thanks so very much for all the pretty things you sent -- and very best wishes for a happy, happy birthday & many more of them.

Love,
Harold, Jean
and Catherine

1949 Jean Letter -May 16

May 16, 1949
Dearest Mother & Daddy,

Harold's mother and father just left for New Vienna with their car packed full of our things but we have plenty left to send.

They arrived here about 1:30 Saturday with enough to eat for the whole weekend -- asparagus, two chickens, a quart of cooked rhubarb, 2 dozen eggs, onions, 1 1/2 rhubarb pies and a lovely bouquet of lilies of the valley.  We really had prepared for their coming by stocking the refrigerator so it was quite a problem of space but we did appreciate it all.

We had the chicken, asparagus, mashed potatoes, gravy and your special spice cake for dinner Saturday night.

Catherine was quite aware of some excitement in the offing for she refused to sleep all day Saturday but was real good.

Sunday Harold took them to the Episcopal Church which is the nearest Protestant one to us.  In the afternoon we went out for a ride taking Catherine with us.  She enjoyed the luxury of the back seat of the Lincoln for she could really stretch out.

They came over for breakfast about 8:30 and left from here.  Just as were ready to sit down at the table -- the plumbers knocked & wanted to tear up our kitchen and bath.  We warded them off finally for 20 minutes but they refused to wait any longer.  Ever since our apartment has been busier than Grand Central Station -- with 3 different plumbers in & out every 3 minutes plus Norma and Jane & later Mrs. McGonagle.  We had sent her a reference to fill out for Harold & she came to have us help her -- Harold would have had plenty of New Vienna names but they seemed to want Cleveland references so he listed her as one -- for the Bar Committee.  She said Doris is still going but had some pains last night so she wouldn't (Mrs. McG.) let her (Doris) come over to see us.

Linn [Zook] came over Thursday evening.  Harold tried to reach him by phone to get him to come for dinner but he wasn't working so he just came later.  We made popcorn -- rather he did -- brought it and popped it for us too.  Then we sat and talked -- mentioning auto-drive-in theaters and decided about 9:30 to go to one since a quite recent and good one was showing at the nicest and nearest one to us.  Very unexpected but all very exciting because of it.  "The Unfaithful" was the title and dealt with a girl (Ann Sheridan) who killed a man who had seen her quite frequently while her husband was in the service.  The husband now away on a business trip comes home to find the police waiting to question his wife.  The lawyer, a mutual friend of husband and wife, manages to persuade the jury it was self-defense and also saves the marriage.  He was very good and the courtroom scenes were supposed to be noteworthy -- the redeeming feature of combining business with pleasure for Harold.

The drive-in itself was very nice (having no others to compare it with) but certainly convenient for families.  Catherine wakened slightly but decided her fist was much more entertaining than the movie and soon was sound asleep again.  60¢ admission and no charge for cars or children under 12 (age just applies to children not cars under 12!).

There is dust 6 inches thick on the whole apartment and they're coming back tomorrow to finish -- the plumbers, that is.  In about a week, the bricklayers or plasterers will be here to plug up the holes the plumbers make, then in another week, the painters will come to beautify the plasterer's job.  Then probably after every thing in the kitchen & bath is in good shape, we'll move to greener pastures.

As far as we know, we will get to New Cumberland about June 2nd.  Bill is coming up with the Wells Mfg. Co. truck and move us down to New Vienna on the 30-31.  We'll take a little time to unload a few things then Harold will bring us up to New Cumberland and head for Columbus the next day (June 3) as his law review course begins there that same Friday evening.

The dresses, pillow, bonnet, playpen pad, sunsuit, sweater, pillow case and all arrived today and all of the things are just darling.  The sunsuit looks like it will be a better fit than the yellow one which I bought her for it (yellow) is Large and the pink is Medium

I think my last wisdom tooth is trying to come thru as I've had plenty of feeling (not wisdom, but real feeling) back there especially today -- lower left.  Dr. Davis told me it was coming soon and crooked so I hope I won't have to go to the dentist's before I leave Cleveland for there are so many other things and places I'd rather gad to.

I broke another baby bottle just before the folks came for breakfast (too much in the refrigerator) so I'll really have to buy some tomorrow.

We sent in notice of our vacating today -- they'll no doubt think the plumbers are getting me down.  The couple upstairs moved last weekend (smart people).

Nearly all our church connections are complete now -- the First Baptist called last week and wanted us to have Catherine dedicated last Sunday.  It will be our fault now if anything should happen for you can't say they haven't tried.

Do you need any postal cards???  Just a line, we'd appreciate to know you're all well.  Familiar words?  I'd be glad to return the stamps.

Love to all --
Jean, Harold and Catherine

1979 Family Letter -May 13

Sunday Evening, May 13 [1979]

Dear Family:

Last Thursday we left for Toledo for the 99th Ohio Bar Meeting, zipped up there in no time with a luncheon stop at Ponderosa.  That was our first trip to Toledo sine Serena was in school there.  We had a room at the Commodore Perry Hotel (guess who that was named after), which was the headquarters hotel.  Unfortunately, as far as rest was concerned our room was too near a hospitality room that never seemed to close.

Your Mother and Lee Noble got together Thursday night for dinner, while I went out to the reception at the U. of T. Law School, where there is enough refreshment to make a meal.  Friday night we went to the banquet program, where they made a presentation to some 20 people who had practiced law for 50 years . . . one fellow was on his 65th year.  They had a good program -- Mark Russell -- who gave a satire type program and had everyone in stitches for about an hour.  The evening ended with a "tent on the roof" idea, which was a big tent pitched on top of the parking garage adjacent to the hotel.  Again more refreshments and plenty of room to talk with people.

Saturday morning we left about 7:30 with the first top in Lakeside -- virtually everything was closed, except for the Fountain Inn Hotel, which really has a nice modern addition -- they cater to groups during the off season and we saw a group there from the Audubon Society, who were getting ready to go out and "watch" birds.  A coat felt good as there was a "cool" breeze off the lake, tho there were several out on the pier pulling the fish in.  The corner where you used to live, Serena and Catherine, was where the new part of the Fountain Inn is and really looks nice.  Will try to include a post card to show you.  From there we went on south stopping briefly at Sawmill Creek (Ohio's Resort hotel) near Huron, Ohio.  They have a beautiful golf course and indoor and outdoor pools, etc.  It is almost brand new.

We had made plans to meet and have lunch with a former teacher at Western Reserve Library School who is now retired and lives in Oberlin.  We got home just at six -- Mary Va. was asleep on the couch but at first thought she had gotten a better invitation to go some place.  I was really tired from so much going that I was in bed by 9:00 and felt ready to go early this morning.

We had Grandma and Elizabeth Johnson for lunch today -- not too big a lunch as the MYF had a supper theater -- rather dinner theater -- tonight.  They had about 70+ reservations and they not only served dinner but also put on the entertainment.  Mary Virginia sang and Leanne accompanied her on the guitar.  She sang "Everything Is Beautiful" and did a good job.  They must have had about ten different acts -- some from the MYF and some not.  Haven't heard how they did.

Had surprise visitors Wednesday -- almost didn't go to the door as I was getting dressed to go to the final Woman's Club program of the year -- saw some couple at the door and thought they must be selling something but found out it was Greg Schamaun and his wife.  They had flown up for his grandmother's (Maternal) funeral.  Rev. Schamaun's mother has also had a stroke and his wife is in the hospital for some kind of surgery so he had taken time to come down to see the Fawleys.  Stan's funeral was Tuesday and so he got to see Stan and Marvin before they left.  Greg's wife looked much older and heavier than I had imagined her to be -- Greg is tall and slender and has a daughter, Wendy 8, and a little boy 3.

. . . . church today that the Administrative Board had voted to use the money from the memorial fund for Stan Fawley for a chair lift.  No doubt it won't be enough but at least it will be a good start.  Melba, Peggy and her little girl were there this morning.

It is hard to believe that the school year is so near over -- last day is May 25th for teachers but then they began about August 21st.  Ruth stayed with MV while we were in Toledo.  She is working 5 days a week at Careys so must be feeling pretty well.  Not able to do alot but is able to take care of Christie.  I really appreciated all the Mothers Day cards and hearing from all of you!!

1979 Roberta's letter to John -May7

Tuesday
[May 7, 1979]
Hi John --

Wow!!!  You're going to Europe -- I just wish I could go w/ you -- how are you getting to New York??  I think it's so exciting your going -- I can't even think of anything I want you to get me but give me time.

How are your last few weeks of school -- is it hard to believe you are almost there -- ready to get that diploma??  It was for me -- and it took me  5  years to do it!!!

I've really had some busy busy days at work -- Mother's Day packages -- ready to do me in!!

I'm sorry I'll miss seeing you before you go -- or at least for a send off but w/ Mom, Dad, G'ma & Mary Virginia you should get a decent send-off!

As for meeting you in the East -- that's the same time I'm to be touring w/ Mother -- Oregon -- so unless you could come home before June 18th -- or after July 15th -- it looks doubtful that I could meet you.

What's this job in Newark -- is it what you want?  Just where is Newark -- I could get out my map -- Maybe you will be a 2nd Thomas Brumley or perhaps a 2nd Elroyd Collier.

I'm all registered for school -- August 25th will soon be rolling around -- probably be 115º in the shade out here then.  Now it's hitting 100º most days!!

Now Serena says she can't come here for the car -- time, etc.  So I've called trusty AAA car transport company -- they want $170 to get the Dodge to Denver -- unreal!!  I plan to advertise etc. -- keep my fingers crossed -- get a gone one --

John -- I understand Mary Thompson sent us a letter -- do you still have it?  I'd like it --

Can you read my writing -- I write like a real executive!!

What do you want for graduation -- how about some double filled oreo cookies??

We're going to the zoo this weekend -- Gotta go ----

Love,
Roberta

1969 Catherine's Letter -May 7

Wednesday, May 7 [1969]
Dear Mother,

Hi!  Happy 21st Mothers Day.  I can't say as I can remember back to your first one but I've got a lot of pleasant memories since then.

I was just sitting here thinking back.  The store windows are all full of formals and it reminded me of you taking me to Columbus to get mine.  And our lunch at Marzetti's.  And that brought back thoughts of my first hose and my first high heels.  They are probably still sitting around in a closet somewhere.  That's all part of growing up I guess.

And then I think of all the things you taught me.  Everything from how to write my name, cooking, playing solitaire, long division, ironing . . . an endless list.  But to you and Dad I will always owe all my abilities and what I'm able to do with them.

I can remember once a long time back when at a revival service the minister had me look at you and say "I love God" or something similar.  I don't think I grew any closer to God but having to say it to you made me realize how much I love you.  While we're on religion I admire you & Dad as Christians and the way you brought me up.  But I can't accept it simply because it's the way I was brought up.  Right now I'm more of an agnostic.  I've got to find out for myself.  Maybe I should say a Christian agnostic because I can hardly disagree with such principles as the Golden Rule, 10 Commandments, and I've got to admire all the churches have done to better the world.

You did fail to instill in me a love of New Vienna as home.  Or if you did it has become latent in me.  NV is the place where my family happens to live while I live in Chicago.  I've already found myself telling people I'm from Chicago.  Having been here over 30 days I guess I am a legal resident.

Well, whatever happens in the next years I hope I don't disappoint you too much.  I applaud and thank you for all you've done to make me what I am but it's my life and I'm living it for myself.  When or if I ever become a Mother I hope I can be, or I'll try to be as good and as loving as you've been

Have a good day!

Lots of Love,
Catherine

1989 Jean's Family Letter -May 6

Saturday --
May 6, 1989
Dearest Family --

The day has finally arrived when Dad is due home.  It has seemed long in many ways and short in others.  I'm sure if I had been out there bicycling it would seem like YEARS.  I am to leave in a little bit but thought I'd get this letter started and then Dad can add to it if he likes -- when he has some time.  The dining room table is piled high with letters and papers for him to go through.  A lot may be junk mail but I've thrown alot of that out too and still there are twenty piles or so.

We have really had a lot of rain and cool weather lately -- the grass I had planned to cut -- mainly the dandelion stems but is no weather for that.  The things he planted are coming slowly but I'm sure he will want to do alot more planting.  That cultivater just runs too fast for me and very hard to turn around so it still waits.

It was good to see John and Mary Virginia this past weekend.  John came to New Vienna about 3:30 and we stopped to see G'ma and then had supper with MV in Wilmington after a shower she had been co-hosting there.  Roberta, Catherine and Wendy have been very good to write and call and have talked to Serena a number of times on the phone.   I finally got through to her again for I heard via Roberta that S's car had been parked & sideswiped but guess minimal damage -- some paint from other car on hers plus front license plate had fallen off.

Grandma is doing fine -- she's had water in her basement and a furnace problem which is now righted thanks to Wells and their calling a plumber for what they couldn't do.  Her appetite is good and she can eat plenty of strawberries which I've tried to keep her supplied among other things.  Ours are a long way before they'll be ready and not near as big but certainly the price is right if you don't count your time and picking.

It is now Sunday afternoon (May 7) and Dad has been home a little over 14 hours.  He was back at his duties as Sunday School superintendent and picked up G'ma this morning.  We brought her home for lunch and he has now taken her back.  In church during the sharing period he expressed joy at being back in Ohio and seeing all the greenery.

The NVUMC bell choir is playing at Otterbein Home this afternoon with a group of other bell choirs.  They play by groups and then all play a number or two together.

We had our first rhubarb this week and asparagus last Sunday tho I had eaten some raw from the garden before there was enough to cook.  Dad says that he didn't have any fish while he was gone so that will be on the menu as I eat quite alot of that -- either broiled baked or grilled -- that and chicken or turkey.  Some of the riders missed red meat but that would never be on the top of Dad's list.  But of course, fruit and vegetables -- both fresh are.  We have just about finished up the fruit that came back with me from Arizona -- I gave G'ma the last grapefruit.

Mary V is on her first Emmaus Walk in Lexington and it will be over in a few hours.  Then she will also lead the music and give a talk at the next "walk" in Wilmington the end of July.

1989 HH Family Letter -May 6

5/6/89
Dear Family,

Now @ the Jacksonville Airport waiting to head north and real civilization -- the 1st in 5 weeks -- which really went amazingly fast.

We stayed at a Church in the Jacksonville area last night (traffic was horrendous coming into town yesterday afternoon, compounded by the fact that we covered 107 miles yesterday starting from the Swanee River Campground.)

Bkfst was at 8 A.M. today, hot cereal & Belgian waffles, w/ a choice of 4 kinds of fruit.  We got to the Atlantic before noon, so we did make it coast to coast.  A # of people have asked us where we started from & then reaction is "You must be kidding."  Just goes to show that a lot of small steps can cover lots of ground.

The last 1/2 of the trip has been more of a vacation, more vegetation & water to look at & begin to realize that I was going to make it.  Also by that time one begins to know the different people & it became more family like.  Just learning about these people was an education.  In Florida we were on the De Soto trail, who came thru here in 1539, & also visited the site of the largest battle of the Civil War.

[Love, etc. from Dad]

1979 Catherine's Letter -May 4

Friday
May 4, 1979
Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  That clipping on Bill Holmes was very interesting.  Do you want it back?  It has been another busy week for us.  We now have two empty apartments and I have spent several hours getting them ready to re-rent.  The two bedroom the people are moving in tonight and I'm not sure about the one bedroom.

Sandi came over from Eugene with her new assistant, Tonya, on Tuesday, and they did our monthly inspection.  We passed OK even though the grounds look like a disaster area with all the digging for the irrigation or rather sprinkler system.  They are supposed to be done next week but they haven't even finished laying the pipes.  Then they have to till all the soil, plant the grass, shrubs, trees, etc.  We had a load of sand delivered for the play area this week but they were unable to put it in the area (due to the sprinkler system) so we have to wheelbarrow it about 30 feet.  Also we have started the 6-month interior inspection.  We've done nine this week and have the rest scheduled for next week -- after that comes all the repairs that need done -- mostly touch-up painting that the painters missed.  It takes about 15 minutes to do each apartment.  Gerry also has to reset each water heater at 130º as several water heaters in other complexes had the pop-off valve blow causing water everywhere.  Originally all the ones here were were at 140º.

Wendy had a big day last Sunday.  We went to church of course and Gerry and I had made arrangements for Wendy to go with Melissa (one of her babysitters) to Melissa's grandmother's house for the afternoon while Gerry and I played golf.  However when we got to the golf course they were having a tournament so we were unable to play until 5:30.  So we made arrangements with Lisa (another babysitter) for Wendy to go to dinner at Lisa's father's house after she got back with Melissa.  Wendy was home for about 5 minutes in between but was all set to go again when Lisa came after her.  She just said bye-bye and was off.  She loves to go.  I'm sure that was alot more fun for her than staying at home with a babysitter would have ever been.

Gerry joined the golf course or rather we join as a family so now we can play whenever we want at no additional cost.  We had hoped that the membership fee would also include swimming privileges but that costs an extra $50 for the summer and we didn't think we'd be using it that much.

Well, I've got to sweep the sidewalks and get my cleaning supplies out of the apartment that they are moving into today so I better close.

Love,
Catherine, Gerry
& Wendy

[Postmarked May 3, 1989]

Hi!  When we were in Jerome I met 2  who had left San Diego on bikes & hoped to be in Virginia Beach by June 1st.  Dad -- what advice would you give them?  They were traveling self-contained.  I did treat them to lunch -- but did not buy this property!  Back to work soon & end of month paperwork!

1949 Jean's Letter -May 2

Monday
[5/2/49]
Dearest Mother and Daddy,

Decided to start off better this week with a letter reaching you by Friday at least instead of Saturday.

Thursday I went out to the Library & took Catherine.  It is the day the Prenatal Classes meet so I was able to see Mrs. Bradley & Mrs. James who have charge of them.  They were both very busy so just spoke to them.

Most of the library staff was on hand and took time off to admire our little girl.  Miss Miller wasn't there but all the others were including Bobby Smith Guidovee [sp?] who has just been working mornings.  She is quite anxious to have a baby & says she wants one just like Catherine.

Miss Beatty was busy with a patron but all of a sudden I heard her say, "I'm sorry, you'll jut have to excuse me a minute – this is one of OUR babies and I just have to see her," leaving the woman standing there with her mouth wide open while Miss Beatty walked away to see us.

We also stopped to see Mrs. Ackerman -- Lee had knit a pair of booties for Catherine -- very pretty but she neglected to put any string or ribbon in them so there is not way to hold them on.  I wanted to say something for they are so useless without but -- perhaps I can fix them up with narrow pink ribbon myself.

We finished up the box of Pablum which you bought and so we started giving Catherine Clapp's Cereal Food -- (we got the box free because of a coupon sent to us).  It is not as course as Pablum & she doesn't seem to take it as well.  I've heard so many say they like Gerber's Cereals so will try them next.  They have sent us three samples of their cereals -- cereal food, barley cereal and strained oatmeal.

It's looking quite dark this morning & has sprinkled off and on.  Yesterday we took Catherine for a long walk or rather she in her carriage and we on our feet.  Soon after we got in it began to pour.

I was certainly shocked & sorry to hear about Mabel Patterson as I didn't know she had been in the hospital.  I remember when she was little how seriously ill she was then but never dreamed of this.  That's two deaths in the Patterson clan in such a short time.

I left the announcement of Nancy & Scott Hallett's son – Scott Clinton at home for it around while we were there, do you still have it perchance?  If so, I'd appreciate it if you'd save it til we get there.

Do you have plans for this weekend?  If so, please just let us know.  If we do come, Harold will be studying most of the time (just to get out of work you have been laying aside for him, you say).  Or we would be glad to have you come over here -- after all it will be Mother's Day and you deserve a rest from company, cooking, etc.  Do hope to hear from you soon concerning your plans -- that's this weekend -- 6-7-8 of May.  You visit your other children, why don't you honor us on this occasion?

Catherine has been real good and sleeps from the end of her 7:00 feeding until the next morning now with no ill effects.  We've not had any trouble at all since we've been back of her being awake for a long period in the evening.  Usually I keep her up from her 3:00 feeding on -- or take her for a carriage ride, bring her in & give her some water when she gets fussy, fix our dinner, feed her & put her to bed for the night.

Jean Keil Walker called & wanted to see us this weekend but I told her Harold was busy studying.  She says Carole never has given up her 10:00 feeding & now wakens at 2:00 since they've been trying to wean her.

Waiting for your reply -- whether you come up -- or we come down or any plan you have made.

Love, Jean, Harold
and Catherine

1989 HH Postcard -May1

5/1/89 Destin, FL  (our revised overnight stop)

When we rode into FL it was so cloudy & wet (a heavy rain last night, we stayed dry, but the sound effects were too close.)

Visited the P.L. in Fort Walton Beach -- doubt if M.V. made that stop.

Tonight they bussed us out to this Episcopalian retreat (called Fisher of Men) -- very pretty spot right on the lake & a great breeze.  The sun did come out this P.M.

The blue on the bike gloves fades badly when they are wet & then everything I touch turns blue.  It seems like it takes forever to get the hands clean again.  The white socks are also hard to keep clean -- oil from the chain, etc.  Peaches these are some points to recall before you leave on your bike safari.  Ahem.  Anyway hope we can have more May Days like 1954 than 1989.  The wind here reminds me of the picnic w/ the Zooks on Lake Erie.  Read items in WSJ where the new hotels in downtown Toledo are having a tough time making it.
