The Eggery and the weather in West Palm Beach
I had a very nice breakfast with Catherine, Gerry, Wendy Jean, Ken, Sarah (one of Ken's sisters), Katie (Sarah and Ken's niece) and KC this morning a The Eggery. The food was good and it is a very nice place - we went to the one at Camelback and Central. By the way, there was mention there that there is now (or coming soon) an Egg and I restaurant at 83rd and Union Hills. Both Katie and KC were very quiet.
Catherine and I discussed that they will be picking me up about 6:00 a.m. Monday to leave for Florida. That way I can clean out the kitty litter one last time before I leave (since the next change won't be until Wednesday mid-day).
The weather here is quite nice and looks like West Palm Beach will also be very nice next week - the link for the weather site that I use is here.

Anyone talk to Mom and Dad?
They called tonight and sounds like Dad is feeling better--has walked AND ridden his bike to the office and today worked in the yard he said.

New User--Don
Hello, All!
I'm posting finally (via my brilliant wife) as I had trouble logging on before. I know I'm late with my vote for favorite reunion, but it was at Glacier National Park, in spite of the fact it was COLD when we were there. It sure was beautiful!

I assume this is what Dad discussed---Honda four door sedan with 34 mpg. I'm sure they are glad to be back home for awhile!

Who would have known?
PAINTED STREETS
Step into this South Florida town, and watch an art gallery appear beneath your feet.
On a sunny Saturday morning, the streets of Lake Worth, Florida, blossom in colors as bright as a garden. Hundreds of artists kneel with chalk in hand, sketching their entries for the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival in February. Artists come from as far away as California to draw more than 240 paintings that are reproductions of classics that hang in museums. Many artists attend Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach.
How long the art lasts depends on nature. Traffic takes its toll when the streets reopen--tires act like big erasers.

Jacks and ball

The picture of the ball and jacks caught my eye! Here is part of what the article with the picture said, "Get out the wooden tops, jacks and marbles - classic toys are finding new life as rehabilitation tools for seniors. In various nursing homes and senior centers on the East Coast, a new program, administered by the Teacher Place & Parent Resources in Burlington, Vermont, uses classic toys to improve memory and hand-eye coordination."

World as Cloverleaf strange map

From Strange Maps Blog 030807
Heinrich Bunting (1545-1606) knew the world didn’t really look like this. There are enough maps in his works (such as Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae) to indicate he knew the continents had an irregular, and not a symbolic shape.
This particular map is a tribute to Buntings hometown Hanover, as the text above the map indicates: Die ganze Welt in einem Kleberblatt welches ist der Stadt Hannover meines lieben Vaterlandes Wapen (‘The Whole World in a Cloverleaf, Which Is The Coat of Arms of Hannover, My Dear Fatherland’).
The map shows a world divided into three parts (Europe, Asia and Africa), connected at a single central point: Jerusalem. This is essentially still the same symbolic map of the world as the one first devised by Saint Isidore in the seventh century. Isidore’s ’T and O’-shaped map, itself inspired by Scripture, influenced Christian European mapmaking up until the age of discovery.
That age would be the one Bunting grew up in. He and his contemporaries were among the first generations of Europeans to know Isidore was wrong – but it’s almost impossible to resist imagining how this centuries-old archetype of a map took a while to be erased out of the common memory of cartographers.
Bunting’s map is nice in that it combine symbolism with realism: in the bottom left corner a piece of land is named America. Strange is that a similar detached piece of territory at the top of the map is labelled Denmark and Sweden. Bunting must have known that Denmark was contiguous with the European Continent…
Some named countries and places (not all are easily readable) on the three continents are, left to right:
Europe: Hispanien (Spain), Mailand (Milan), Welschland (Welsh? Walloon? Country), Frankreich (France), Lothringen (Lorraine), Roma (Rome), Deutschland (Germany), Ungarn (Hungary), Polen (Poland), Preussen (Prussia), Griechenland (Greece), Türken (Turks)
Africa: Lybia, Egypten, Morenland (Land of the Moors), Königreich Melinde (Kingdom of Melinde) , Caput Bonae Spes (Cape of Good Hope)
Asia: Siria, Arabia, Mesopotamia, Armenia, Chaldea, Persia, India

Runs in the Family?
Returned to the allergist MD yesterday with Christian and think we have the answer to the nosebleeds that have plagued him for probably 7-8 years. They seem to ebb and flow (no pun intended) but are the worst in the winter/early Spring and in the heat of summer. Seasonal allergies combined with extremes in weather (which dry out the sinus cavities) seem to be the problem.
Brings to mind that I remember having alot of nosebleeds as a child but don't remember any rhyme or reason to them. Further, it might be helpful in our family history to track medical challenges that might be inherited whether nosebleeds or breast cancer or even heart related to be proactive and preventive for ourselves and future generations. I know we have discussed this before in passing but I did not keep a record of it. I would be glad to track this for future reference if family would like to email me (private--not blog related, necessarily).
With Mom and Dad both having blockages, etc., we need to be especially vigilant now with heart disease as well as cancer check-ups.
On a lighter note, Christian had baseball try-outs last night and we're looking forward to the beginning of little league in a few weeks. AND it is not too late if anyone would like to visit next week for the big St. Patrick's celebration in Dublin. The whole town turns out for the Pancake Dinner on Thursday night sponsored by the Exchange Club (similiar to Lions, etc) and then Saturday is the parade, crafts festival and many more activities. What airport would you like to utilize???
Did the picture CDs arrive in Phx yet?

TOPIC THIS WEEK
How about favorite place and/or memory in Florida? I'd like to hear the real story from Mom and Dad about Roberta and the Key West trip...not the one that has been retold and "morphed" over the years. lol! Does RUK have any recollection of this situation? Does she still post on the blog?
I'd also like to say THANK GOD FOR GOOD GENES
....Dick Uible lived into his 90s
...Howard Uible still doing well at 97
....Gladys Hiestand Uible past 100
....NW Ballantyne lived past 80
...Mother has already outlived (and out-done??) her mother and maternal grandmother
...her paternal grandmother lived past 100 (is that right??)
Did all these people at least visit Florida? Don't know about Irene Freeman but the rest would be YES! Maybe there is a fountain of youth somewhere...

Ginny's "job"
Ginny helped out at "Come Home to the Country" as a server tonight and last Saturday and really enjoyed it. Evidently their regular server had surgery and they were short-handed...the pay was a nice bonus! www.dublinfarm.com Mom and Dad as well as Roberta and Sid will remember well our meal there with them!
Serena, I don't know how to link it (or if possible?), but I did upload 2 photo albums online with picasa today. All the pictures (and a WHOLE lot more) are on the CDs you all will be getting....
Also time for the greenin' o' Dublin for St. Pat's festivities: www.saintpatricksfestival.com

Radial Head Fracture
No, it is not my head that is injured but my elbow! A small crack, but cracked nevertheless, requiring a sling and limited use of the arm/elbow for at least a couple weeks. Fortunately the pain is minimal and I have a fairly good range of motion already. One of the following caused the injury: skateboard, motorcycle, paraglider, chapstick. All in all I missed about 1.5 hours of work so haven't had to make a dent in my 1500+ hours of sick leave.
Family Pictures
Going to get CDs put in the mail today and hopefully there will be a picture or two on the CD you have not seen! With the CD, you can look at it from your computer or if there's one you want to print, you can do that from your own printer or take it to a photo developing place (Wal-Mart or drug store, etc) and get any size you want made. Also, Serena, would you send Don another invitation to the blog as he tried to post a time or two recently and it wouldn't let him. Thanks!

Good Morning from Ballad
Thanks Serena for getting me this far! I won't take much time to tell you why I can't write more now, but I am on my way over to look at a piece of furniture for the folks! It is a cute miniature desk, which could be used as a table, etc. Stay tuned!
Did anyone else eat pancakes last night? We ate some at the Espiscopal Church, after we went by the Lutheran Church where we thought they were having pancakes, but it looked like a formal dining experience there, so we did not crash the party!
We did get in a bike ride yesterday with me wearing shorts, but long sleeves! The bad news is on the home front that Sid has lost his wallet, which we spent hours looking for last night! We will re-trace our bike route, but my thought is that is is squirred away under a layer or two inside this house!
I just had some of Serena's excellent bread! More to follow.....that is of me eating more bread and writing more if I can get back on this! Love to all, Roberta the poster!

Next Best Thing to Being There
We are really enjoying the new pictures posted of the Arizona family and most especially KC! Will he (and his folks?) be making an appearance in Florida in a few weeks? What's the latest on the folks duplex and progress there?
JB and I have been working on making reservations on the north and southbound stops of the FL trip and looking forward to getting together with everyone! Don is sorry to miss out BUT just signed up for "free" training through the (current) company to become a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. It will require him to be in Atlanta for a week bi-monthly for the next 12 months. His first go'round is March 5-9.

I have no idea why you can't post from your computer.
This is posted from Roberta's laptop.

Valentine's Day After
Had a great supper and visit last night with Mom & Dad, Roberta, Serena, Mavis, Lester, Gerry and I plus our special Valentine's visitor, Mister KC -- who smiled and cooed appropriately while being passed around, fussed over, and admired. He sat right up at the table in his bouncy vibrating chair. I'll attach a picture later. The SCW crowd moved on after 8pm in order to make a furniture shopping stop on the way home. We were sorry to miss, Sid. Hope he's feeling better today. KC went to sleep shortly after 9pm, and slept until 2am, then again until 6am so can't complain about loss of sleep during his visit. Hoping to take him to babytime later this morning, before I go to work at noon. Gerry, Mavis and Lester will babysit until Wendy gets off work and picks him this afternoon.

Favorite Reunion
My favorite was Estes Park at YMCA of the Rockies in 1994. A distant second would be Shenandoah but if I ever go back, I'd like to research family tree as that is the very area the Hiestands came to Highland County from.

Blog Topics
How about a new topic this week? My suggestion is favorite family reunion (as adults). Tag, you're it! We're looking forward to seeing everyone in Florida!
wonderful pictures
Just a quick note to say how pleasantly surprised I was this morning to find new pictures upon my arrival to the UIBLE blog! And from the youngest members on up! Sid just asked me again about the LOVE LETTERS we went to last night with Barbara Eden (is she the one or not the one that moved her nose?) and Hal Linden. Long story made short for those outside of the AZ Territory (you know it was one until 1912) we were given comp tickets and I can see why the tickets at $55 each were available! Details to follow. Please Serena!?!

Florida leads to Roberta's life time of talking
One winter (1954 or 1955) I was left in Florida with Grandma & Granddad to give Roberta a chance to learn to talk without using me as an interpreter. Glad that worked, Roberta, as being your lifetime interpreter would have indeed been a challenge for me! Grandma and Granddad were living above the garage behind another house and it was quite exotic a location as there were lots of bird of paradise and even poinsettia trees. For a few weeks (days?) I went with Marianne to kindergarten which involved sitting at small tables coloring -- not all that exciting -- so made me feel better about missing the experience in Ohio where there was no kindergarten until Roberta was ready to go. I remember there being news about Alaska and Hawaii added as states, which I think Granddad was not sure was a good idea. Why would we want those far off places to be part of the US? They weren't even connected to the rest of the states and that would obviously be a problem. Maybe Dad showed me where they were on the map and that began my fascination with maps.

Florida and Recipes
I can't say I remember ever going to FL with the family EXCEPT when I was about 5ish (possibly right after Granddad died?). My first time to travel by myself was to FLORIDA to see RUK and the Hortons when I was 10 and earned the money to buy my own ticket $110 from Cincy to West Palm. As I also recall Disneyworld had just opened and RUK took me there on greyhound? Could be I have the trips confused....Also want to say Vanessa Brown took us to Disney and then maybe we rode back to WPB on the bus. The bus we memorable because it was the first time I ever had chicken out of a can. What a sheltered childhood!
Mother, thinking of you especially right now as I'm watching Iron Chef America on Food Network and the topic is BEETS.
Roberta, I have several personal recipes for crock pot cooking I'd be glad to email you; for Christmas Don gave me Sandra Lee's Semi-Homemade Crock-Pot Cookbook which I have enjoyed and some very interesting recipes in there as well.
Serena--are you worn out from birthday celebrations? Catherine, what's new with KC and the rest of your family?
We are very much looking forward to April and already making plans to convoy with JB, Julie etal from here to Lantana via the Kennedy Space Center.

FLORIDA
This is now Roberta the poster pecking away! My suggestion for a theme would be FLORIDA! Trips in the past, and of course what should we plan for April! I remember well both the times in Florida and of course getting there and back! Topics under this could be many, the food we ate, the trips to the beach, the bathrooms (or lack of) and of course the side trips! Serena, could you find some pictures of Florida to post???
Another subject could be cooking.....I am thinking of using our slow cooker more so I am looking for recipes, and would appreciate any tried and true.
I have not had my breakfast yet, and get grouchy when I have not eaten so more later. Again this is Roberta the poster posting. ( I just had to remove commas, and other not allowed items from the subject line)

Picture Editing and topic of the week!

After using picasa to do Serena's collage, I fooled around with it a little more on those Ballantyne pictures and it's pretty easy to use. Now I'm going back through other pictures and cropping them to make it easier to see the people (example above and left). Very user friendly!
Coldest morning here yet. I hear my parents when I say to my children, "CLOSE THE DOOR YOU'RE LETTING ALL THE COLD AIR IN!" and "Aren't you cold? Where are your slippers?". As of right now the temp is UP to 30*. Off to Macon to donate platelets and red cells. Where is RUK, the blog lurker? No comments from her recently. Topic for next week?

Skye Restaurant
We finally made it to the famous (at least in Roberta's world) Skye Restaurant. It was very nice. I must say from Roberta's rather sketchy description - five floors with lots of music and food; I had pictured more of a bar/dancing/chi-chi food place.
It seems we picked a rather off-night to try out Skye - it was the night for their Christmas party (obviously after the Christmas rush). There were only four occupied tables at the place - one by a relatively large party (15-20 people), two other tables of four or so and the four of us - Sara, Sid, Roberta and me.
We had an excellent appetizer - Wisconsin cheese fondue with some sliced apple, broccoli, cauliflower and bread. We had roasted duck, pecan chicken, and (in honor of the Mexican trip to Puerto Penasco) Shrimp Puerto Penasco. Everyone was very happy with their entrees, although I found the Shrimp too rich and, although not bad, I wouldn't order it again. At least for the last time in 2007, Sid and I got birthday desserts which we shared. Sid got chocolate decadence which was VERY chocolate and very decadent. I got bananas Foster which was not at all chocolate and somewhat decadent, and very good.
The music was mostly (all?) Frank Sinatra and at a nice volume - one could hear it, but not overpowering and it was easy to carry on a conversation. The lighting was reasonable - one could easily see quite well.
I think the group decision was that Skye is a very nice place for special occasion dining. Very little food for vegans - red pepper hummus was the only item, I think, that would be vegan.
The website is here. And there is a link for the menu (Adobe pdf).
Next birthday meal is scheduled for January 29th at Persian Garden Cafe, in the evening I presume. I'm looking forward to a second trip to the Persian Garden Cafe - it is a very nice organic restaurant with quite a few vegan/vegetarian offerings. Not sure what time we are meeting though.

Lucie, Bob and Virginia Ballantyne circa 1920

These are the pictures Katie Brown Ramaker emailed me last night; Robert and Virginia as the two younger children. Lucie is on the right in first picture and 2nd from right in the right hand picture. We believe the pictures are from about 1920, very possibly in Florida or enroute considering the palm trees and prolific spanish moss. Back of one of the pictures notated a Mrs. Hawkins but not sure which one?
weather and...
The weather yesterday and today was CHILLY---more like January than anything thus far. High here was in the upper 40s I believe and a change from the 70s plus that we had experienced in December and first part of the month and I actually had to wear a jacket tonight. Some people bundle up here in the 40s++ with gloves, hoods, the whole bit and it can almost be comical! All the rain we've had has been very welcome and hopefully we'll have a continued supply of it throughout the Spring/summer to avoid the usual drought/water restrictions.
I did get an email tonight from a Katie Brown Ramaker with some pictures of Grandmother Lucie, Uncle Bob and Aunt Va. As soon as I can edit them with picasa, I will try to post them as they are quite good! Thanks, Wendy, for keeping us up to date with the great pictures of KC!
