Tuesday 1996 - [Hilton Head Island SC to Sea Island GA] Visited Church Museum, had picnic lunch on a nearby beach. Got to the Cloisters about 2pm and had room 324. Their cheapest category, a very nice room at $296 per day with 3 meals and 15% for tips. Had dinner in their dining room, 6 courses – appetizer, soup, salad, entree, sweets and beverage – too much food, though great service. It was a two hour experience, coat and tie required.
Friday 1999 - Busy day at the office, a 38 page contract from Grant Douglas.

Last month or so Rachel and Davy Nixon got married. She now works in Dayton.

Wilmington College Delta Omega Theta Sorority
Found this in Wilmington College Alumni Magazine of June 1957 (while looking up Virginia Hildlebrant) and many of the names seem familiar as New Vienna / Clinton County locals. The ones I actually know were from New Vienna, are bolded in the last paragraph. I added graduation dates for those who were listed elsewhere in the magazine. Among the 1957 graduates were Paul William Terrell, whose Mother Elizabeth Wical Terrell graduated in 1936.
In other exciting WC news of 1957, Jane Fenwick, a junior from New Vienna was crowned as the 1957 May Queen. Harry S. Rowe '15 who was survived by his widow, Elba McKay Rowe is listed as among the recently deceased. Faith Austin Terrell '12, gave the baccalaureate sermon. She is the mother of James Terrell, x-'44, Margaret Terrell Culbertson, x-'45, Nancy Terrell Brewster, '47, and Elizabeth Terrell Wolff, '50, served as a member of the board of trustees since 1932, as secretary of the board since 1940. She was one of the first deans of women at the College and also taught history and education at the College at one time. Charlotte Pugsley Hause '42 is listed in the "news" section but without any news.
Any idea of what "x-" as in x-'36 might refer to after an alumni's name as opposed to just '36? My best guess is that they either graduated at a different time of year, went on to take more classes, or were part of that class but then didn't graduate.
Although I could find very little about a national Delta Omega Theta organization (their website is "under construction"), I did find a MySpace page for the Wilmington College Group (last updated 2009) which says they now have 1,094 members and are the oldest sorority at WC.
1957 Wilmington College Alumni Magazine from pages 15, 26, and 27:
More than two hundred members of Delta Omega Theta Sorority were on hand for the dinner, May 31, which marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of that organization. And it was, in the words of the Wilmington News-Journal, "one of the most delightful and beautiful events in Wilmington's long history of gala affairs."
"Delts" from far and near began gathering at 4:30 P. M. at Snow Hill Country Club and among those present were three of the six charter members. It was on the evening of Nov. 15, 1907, that six girls gathered at the home of Hazel Hayes Metzger, one of the charter members, to begin the organization that now possesses a membership of 617 members. Other charter members were: Delia Hadley Hiatt, Joy Vance Greene, Mary Moon Lewis, the late Ruby Fisher Evans, and the late Mary West Thorne. On hand for the event were charter members Hazel Metzger, Delia Hiatt, and Joy Greene. Also present was Isabel Watkinson Smith, of Tulsa, Okla., who with the late Anna Hummel became the first "Delta" pledges.
The program which followed dinner began with a welcoming speech by the 1956-1957 Delt alumnae chapter president, Mildred Davis Flint x-'31. During the program a memorial service was conducted in tribute to 26 members who have passed away, a talk "Viewpoint of the First Pledge" was given by Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Greene spoke on behalf of the charter members, and the charter members were each presented with a golden link bracelet with golden disc, engraved with the owner's name, the Greek letters of the sorority and the years "1907-1957."
The program also included group singing, a humorous fashion show, beginning with the styles of the 1900's, and the welcome into the chapter of the June graduates. Officers of the chapter during the past year were: Mrs. Flint, president; Hilda Brown Brandehoff '35, vice-president; Joan Reynolds Lambcke, secretary; Emily Hiatt Cornett, corresponding secretary; and Jean Linton Heiland '39, treasurer.
Officers elected for 1957-58 were Mrs. Brandehoff, president; June Leppert Harcum, vice-president; Marjean Noftsger Fischer, secretary; Mary Bell Miars Bernard, corresponding secretary; and Virginia Sims Sutton, treasurer.

[Thought I'd post this since it doesn't seem to be easily available (or at least searchable) on the New Vienna website anymore. Possibly the information is being updated?]
According to Gretchen Huffman, native of New Vienna:
New Vienna is one of the earliest communities in Clinton County. It began as an agricultural community and quickly grew. While the surrounding area supported many large and productive farms, the village attracted its share of industrious, enterprising people. At one time there were several doctors, dentists, lawyers, mercantile stores and other businesses. There were lumber yards, saw mills, a flour mill, a tile and brick company and more. Many churches were established and life was good in the village ofNew Vienna.
With the influx of industry in the surrounding areas, New Vienna now serves mostly as a bedroom community for Wilmington, the County Seat of Clinton County, and for Hillsboro, county seat of Highland County. Many of its residents are employed at the area’s largest employer, ABX, located at the former air base near Wilmington. Recently, DHL, owners of the ground operations at the airpark, announced an expansion of their operations in Wilmington, creating upwards of 900 new jobs. [Obviously this is dated information, as on 12/19/2008 USA Today reported that 7,500 employees were being laid off by ABX/DHL.]
The old tree-lined streets in New Vienna still showcase beautiful old homes, most in good repair, which hearken back to a peaceful earlier time. Children can play safely in the yards and on the streets where horses and buggies used to travel, and ice cream socials were held on summer evenings. The building still stands where movies used to be shown on the outside wall, to families who had come with their lawn chairs for an evening of socializing and entertainment. One of the biggest days of the year was Memorial Day, when the high school band would march and children would carry bouquets of fresh flowers to the cemetery, where they were placed on the graves of veterans. That tradition continues today with a parade and service at the cemetery. Much of the town’s social life centered around the school where all twelve grades attended. The whole community flocked to graduations, school plays and especially, to basketball games. For some years, we had a newspaper, published by the Leesburg Citizen, but we hardly needed one; news traveled fast in those days, and most of it was good news. We all knew if someone was seriously ill or needed help, and help came. The meaning of neighborliness may have been invented by those straightforward, honest, hard-working people who called New Viennahome. In that regard, not much has changed.
Saturday nights in my childhood, especially in the summer, were exciting. When the 7:00 movie at the Avon Theater dispersed, the sidewalks were filled with friendly folks who often stopped in at Pete’s or the KenConnie Inn for a dish of ice cream and to visit with friends and neighbors. We all knew each other, and more importantly, we all cared about each other.
Travel back in time with me to early Clinton County, a picture I have gleaned from earlier records of this idyllic little village in the bounteous state of Ohio:
[Pictures unavailable]
By the time Clinton County was organized in 1810, Green Township was already two or three years into their record-keeping, hence these notations from History of Clinton County Ohio - Its People, Industries and Institutions: (1) October 28, 1809, William Noble’s ear mark of his hogs, sheep and cattle is a crop and under-slit in the right ear and a hole in the left.”
It is also a matter of record that the early citizens of this township paid tax as citizens of Green Township, Highland County. Two of the tax receipts are given as evidence of the fact: “Tax receipt, October 6, 1807. Received of Micajah Nordyke $2.65 of land and county tax for the year. Received by B.W. Johnson.” “November 9, 1809. received Micajah Nordyke his state and county tax: state tax $2.25, county tax 45 cents; 300 acres of land, No. 4,397.” Therefore, we can safely draw the conclusion that this township was formed as early as 1809.
Green Township lies in the southeast part of Clinton County. It is bounded on the southeast by Highland County; on the west by Clark, Washington and Union Townships; on the north by Union and Wayne Townships and on the northeast by Wayne Township. This township contains about forty-three square miles of land, or twenty-seven thousand five hundred and twenty acres.
The white man evidently made his first appearance in this township about the year 1800. The first settlers to take out land with the intention of making this their permanent home were Joseph Anthony, who came here from Virginia; Abner Van Meter and Samuel Clevenger and Morgan Van Meter, who was a native of Morgantown, Virginia, and who settled in the vicinity of Snow Hill in the year 1800. Van Meter purchased two hundred acres of land, on which he erected a double log house - the first log cabin erected in the township.
It is thought by older inhabitants that the first settlement was made a little southwest of the center of the township on the East fork of the Little Miami river. Micajah Nordyke was among the first settlers. He came here from North Carolina in 1804. He and a brother purchased land for two dollars and fifty cents an acre of Col. A. Buford, who then owned a large tract of this region. This small settlement attracted others, such as Stephen Hussey in 1806-07, who purchased land which is now a portion of the town of New Vienna. Other early settlers were Joseph Anthony, William Noble, Sr., Aaron Cox and Eliha Noble. Charles Harris built the “Snow Hill house”, and opened a tavern there, probably the first opened in the county. Mr. Harris’s brother-in-law, Samuel Wasson, built a house about the same time and near the Snow Hill house and commenced to entertain travelers. By 1820 the population had increased until practically all of the lands were occupied.

To Hillsboro to see Mother, she ate all the ice cream in the cup.
Sunday 1994 - Had a brief PPR meeting at church, all seem to want Ed to come back for another year. We ate at Frontier Steakhouse at North Beach, a few in the water. Went to Heartland to see Henry Edwards. Auto Zone store on N. High now open.

Went down to Wells and made some "free" phone calls. The Zooks have a daughter in Columbus OH, Kingsport TN, and Taos NM. Called MUH, she had been out on a one day boat cruise, she lost $10 on the boat. She does not enjoy "boating."

Thursday 1997 - We went out to Donald Bernards. He had a knee operation in 1990, when we visited them in FL and another knee operation recently. They showed us picture cards that we sent them over the years and guessed where the pictures were from. [Article attached from WNJ 9/4/97 but I think was referring to something that happened xx years ago: The New Vienna Lions club observed its 25th anniversary. Members throughout that duration were R.W. Fenwick, Dr. L.H. Fullerton, R.W. Mongold and Russell Faris. Fullerton was treasurer all 25 years. My guess is that the Lions Club in NV started in 1947, Dad got his 45-year pin in 1996, so he joined in 1950 or 1951 and thus is not listed as a member during the entire first 25 years. What about Granddad?]
Friday 1998 - Went to Dr. Engle again, an hour wait. He wants me to have this heart catheterization [or cauterization] at UC soon. I have conflicting signs of trouble. Cris called, all excited about starting his own business. He has rented at 5,000 square foot building and his first customer is his present employer.
Saturday 1999 - [to Somerset KY] Ed Jones will be be 83 on 9/12. Left for Somerset about 9am, traffic back up on I-75 north of Georgetown, so we got on US 25 to Georgetown and then OK. Had picnic supper at Pam Cates, what a hilly yard and what a crowd. Two couples there from Thomasville GA whose grandson was to get the Scout award. The scouts parents now live in Augusta GA. Got the tires rotated on the car, then found we had no reservation at the Hampton Inn but did get in at the Comfort – a handicapped room with a sit down shower seat.
Sunday 1988 - [Elderhostel Netherlands 2-week bike trip through 9/16]
Monday 1989 - [Labor Day] Trimmed shrubbery around house, planted grass seed at Mothers, cleaned grass out in front of Wells. Went to Hillsboro, supper at Rax. Administrative Board Meeting. GHU is still using her Mother's purse, she [her mother] died in 1928 (?).

Sunday 1994 - [Ephraim WI] Breakfast at the Inn included juice, granola, and a BIG serving of baked egg dish with cornbread and what seemed like a quantity of parsley. Went to UMC in Egg Harbor. Drove over to Bailey Harbor and walked around at a fruit farm near Ellison Bay. They had lots of samples of crackers and "spreads." Had dinner reservations at the White Gull Inn [in Fish Creek WI] for the Fish Boil. They have 3 seatings, 5:45, 7, and 8:15. $13.75 each [now $18.95], two pieces of fish, 3 potatoes, cole slaw, and cherry pie a la mode.
Monday 1995 - [Labor Day, Murphin Ridge to home] Had breakfast at 8:15, juice, melon, crumpets and light pancakes. Kate calls them waffles and really like them. John leaves for a week in Mexico the first of October on a mission trip. Had lunch at Long John Silvers in Hillsboro. Baked fish sandwich, $1.79. Jean had Mothers Club program at Mary McMillins. She is going to take the trip to Iceland.

Sept. 1, 1989-99 UK socks for Roberta
Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]
Saturday 1990 - Jean and I cleaned up around Wells, burning limbs across the street. We took Edwin and Phyllis White to Carolyn and Mike Smith's wedding at Dodsonville UMC [south of Lynchburg]. We almost beat Carolyn there. C.R.'s son was really informal. Bruce Beam and ________ Arnold married today, reception on the train from Midland to Greenfield and return. Hortons left for annual reunion.
Sunday 1991 - [Helsinki and Moscow trip]
Tuesday 1992 - Big article in 8/31 NYT about the NEW MALL in Bloomington MN, about 400 stores [and 4.2 million square feet]. Compared it with the Southdale Mall [four miles away] in Edina MN that opened in 1956. [Southdale is the US' oldest fully-enclosed, climate controlled mall with 800,000 square feet and is still open although owned by Simon Malls, a company that specializes in "distressed" shopping centers. Simon owned Metrocenter in Phoenix but sold it in 2004. I think Metrocenter is now beyond stressed and closer to dead. Since Trader Joe's closed we go there only for the library.]
Wednesday 1993 - Lions Club, 18 there. Jim C. of the CM Hospital Foundation spoke, the new office wing is about to open. Also the District Governor was there. Problem with C. Smith at the plant. IRS gal is there for the 2nd day. New 6 year real estate tax valuations are out.
Thursday 1994 - [Columbus to Wisconsin] Had reservations at the Kohler [American] Club in Kohler, WI, $185/night, a 4-star place [now 5-diamond], a big parking garage underground, a whirlpool in bathtub. Had supper at Lesu's [?] near the sports area. They have a shuttle service that goes to the different areas. En route to Kohler [near Sheboygan] we saw the Discovery Center in part of the MPL [Milwaukee presumably], very interesting, they plan to be in a new building in another year.
Friday 1995 - [to Lexington KY] After the Wagonseller/McKay closing in Wilmington we ate at Boston Chicken en route to Lexington to meet the Crowsons. We went to the UK and got Roberta some UK socks, then had supper at the Coach House, very nice. We had reservations at the Best Western at exit 110, rooms 104 and 106 for $44/each. We used the pool this evening.
Sunday 1996 - John, Julie and Kate arrive. MUH is wrapped up in the tennis on TV. Started Proverbs in SS. Serena came about 3pm.
Monday 1997 - [Morgans visiting] Labor Day. Cleaned up old apple tree and took limbs to parsonage. Went to Fallsville, very little water coming over edge. Talking about need of mission statement for our church.
Tuesday 1998 - Open House at NV Elementary.
Wednesday 1999 - Lions Club Program. D.G. [District Governor] from Jamestown spoke, they have 12 women in their club. Leon Salisbury sure has trouble getting around. The DG has 47 clubs to cover and New Vienna was the first club he had visited.
