ROBERTA

Did she eat? Maybe she was deprived, which would explain why she eats her food and then cleans Sid's plate....

YES......I would write more but I have used up my time reading the other comments tonight! I must say that I had to finish my ice cream first.....

Ah, food.....one of my favorite topics. What I remember most is ice cream, how we would go to the 31 flavor place and get was it two or three dips? At home I remember eating lots of corn on the cob and tomatoes in the summer time. There were pizzas made from some Chef of something box and very little chicken. Instead there was turkey!?! But lamb and different cuts of beef that came from the NV locker which also sold ice cream sandwiches! Back to the ice cream, I remember homemade that came in some regular and irregular favors! I ate enough oatmeal to last a lifetime, unless it is put in cookies! Didn't we eat Chinese food growing up? Or is that my imagination? And strawberry shortcake as both dessert and perhaps a meal too? Tis late so more later. I hope this posts. We just got back from Walmart where we spent $100 plus and went in for three items.

The pizza was Chef Boyardee...something I never particularly enjoyed but someone must have liked it. Of course that was before there was any pizza place in New Vienna! We never had much chicken as mother told me once that Dad doesn't particularly like chicken!

Dad just mentioned that we always had a lot of apple sauce. I never could understand (at the time) why we had to pick the apples on the ground instead of on the tree. Who wants to bend over when you can just reach up!!! The ones on the ground were not only ripe but had worms and God knows what else in them!

Sid and I were talking about Chef Boyardee just a couple of weeks ago. He talked about when he cooked for his daughters he made the crust from scratch.

Not only did New Vienna not have a pizza place when we (the three oldest) were growing up, but neither did Wilmington. I don't remember eating pizza OUT until I was in college.

It was a big deal when the first fast food place opened in Wilmington - Burger Chef - there where McDonalds is - or near there anyway. I remember I loved going to the Little Giant - near the library - when I was a teen. I could afford to eat there alone once in a while and read while I ate - rather than be harassed by my pesky siblings.

I've always loved applesauce - it is part of my frequent oatmeal "recipe".

I remember the locker down town beautiful New Vienna. I loved the fudgecicles.

I also remember when we would stop for ice cream there was almost always a race to see who could make their ice cream last the longest. I don't remember particularly any one of us who consistently wont, but one person who did consistently lose.

The (freezer) locker must have been before my time---I have no recollection of it---kind of like the trip WEST in 1962 that everyone thought I went on! And my bet is on RUK to always finish the ice cream FIRST. GO ROBERTA!!!

I do remember sitting at a counter and getting to eat at Burger Chef. It was a treat but it seems like someone used to get their food from another restaurant and take it in there? I don't think I ever ate at the Green Giant but I do remember I LOVED the little hole in the wall in Hillsboro where Mother would let me eat if it was just the two of us; the name of it escapes me but it was downtown across from the Court House on US 50.
I also remember when McDonalds started serving breakfast and we actually ate there once on a trip which was HUGE because we NEVER ate out for breakfast EVER, especially on a trip. It was always cold cereal and fruit in the motel room....after I had slept on 2 chairs put together because my older siblings got the beds. AH THE LIFE OF LUXURY! ;)
