Thank you, Catherine!

 For more than a decade, Catherine Uible Morgan has provided a tremendous labor of love by scanning, transcribing and posting this exhaustive history of family correspondence, pictures and memorabilia. Our gratitude, no matter how voiced, written or spoken is inadequate to say what a gift this has been to our family, Catherine. 

Above all, this was a priceless gift that our father, Harold, looked forward to reading daily until the time of his death. No amount of money, nor other compensation, could begin to express the joy and wonder that we have experienced in relieving the countless highs and a few lows of Uible heritage. With this in mind, and in consideration of the completion of a decade of history posting, we say from the bottom of our hearts to Catherine that we owe you an immense debt of gratitude and unending love by committing to such a huge project -- and finishing it. It is a task that few would attempt and far fewer would complete. Our lives are ever so much richer for this and especially for your tireless work to complete it no matter what happened in your own life. Please accept our deepest gratitude for this amazing gift that you shared with us and especially with our beloved Dad, H.H. Uible.

Dear Grandma,

Hi!  We're here on the plains Illinois prairie having a good time.  Eureka has about 2500 people so it's slightly larger than N.V.  There is also Eureka College and I guess Ronald Reagen went to college here.

We really appreciated the Christmas money.  We put it right to work by buying two records and going out to dinner at a place called Mr. Steak.  There's still some money left -- maybe we'll buy some dogfood.  Ha!

Tell Marianne and Larry, Cris and Rob "Hi" for us.  We'll be thinking about you all on Christmas.

1981 Roberta's Letter -Dec.31

Dear Family,

Trusting you all had a good & safe trip to Chicago -- if I were Serena I'd sure hate to go back there!

This stationery was one of my Christmas presents -- what I got the most of tho was cookies & fruit cake!  Bet Mrs. Long came through for one to you all.  I'm not all that crazy for all the rinds of fruit!

"Charlie" is getting house-broke.  Thank goodness!  Marian left a week ago today & since then I haven't had to pick up /clean up anything in the house!  I really praise him whenever he does it outside!  He's full of energy & his legs are getting taller -- he can now jump up in Bed & up on the chairs!  Seems that my favorite saying is "NO-CHARLIE-NO".  

We did get the lady who had been abused -- really a SAD case -- she feels like she can't do anything -- then we have two others who are direct from a Nursing Home -- & they feel like we are their "hired help" -- I told one I was here to watch / assist -- she told me that was what happened in a PRISON.  She didn't really want to leave the Nursing Home -- I'm convinced she will come around -- though it might take some time!!  Glad that you folks will be able to meet all these characters -- and vice versa!!

1981 GHU Postcard -Dec.81

 [End of December, 1981]

The last card from '81.  We are having a shower for a change.  Weather extra nice the past week.  We are invited to Len & Mildred's for dinner this evening & will be eating on the porch so hope it continues warm.  Tues. we all went to Disney World except Bill & had quite a day among all the people.  The gate closed at noon.  We arr. at 10:30 & back home at 1 Wed.  The boys took turns pushing me.  We drove to Lantana to see the trees, etc. Mon. evening & of course moved through another crowd.  Red'd the Christmas News J. yesterday evening & it will take a while to look through al of the pages.  Cris & Angela will be leaving Sat.  Cris has books with him to read for school but hard to settle down to them.  The Cat is also along & he is doing nicely loves to watch a Squirrel which plays in the side trees.  It is time to take the Christmas ornaments down again but Mary is in no hurry so may be next week.  Had a note from Roberta along with a picture of Charlie on a mail box.  He is not small, so I wonder how big he will grow to be.  I think we have enough dogs in the family.  Thanks again for all the Christmas Greetings.  Wishing you all a "Good & Happy New Year."  -- Grandma

1961 Catherine's Letter -Dec.

 

Dear Everybody,

Sorry I haven't written but I haven't had much time.  Just as soon as I came home from school Friday Grandma took Robbie and I swimming.  Then right after supper Aunt Mary took Cris, Marianne, and I to the Christmas Program at North Grade.  Yesterday morning we went down town to see Santa Claus and went Christmas shopping.  Yesterday afternoon Grandma took Joe, Marianne,  Robbie, Roberta Dicks and I swimming.  Last night we decorated the Christmas Tree but I was too tired to do very much.

Cris, Marianne and I sang in the choir at early service this morning.  Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill are at church right now.

Friday morning at school we got out of first period to go see the Christmas program the 9th grade presented.  Joe played the piano for the mixed choir.

I have bought a present for Roberta and Serena but that's all.  I till have 6 presents to buy.

Of the $50.00 which you gave Granddaddy I have $30.00 left.  What happens to what is left?  I have not gotten any gym shoes yet.  But even if I do I will still be more than happy to keep the money for camp. (?)

1981 Roberta's Birthday card to Jean -Dec.11

Dear Family,

It's hard to believe that it's the season of your Birthday, Mom & Christmas soon to follow!!

Been wondering how the Christmas Bazaar went Saturday.  Wish I were closer -- would have had lots of home-made goodies to bring over.  This year the new item is napkin holders -- I'll give you some in January & you can use them next year!!

We (4 Senior Village ladies & myself) went to the County Supervisors (Commissioners) meeting this AM -- what an experience -- we had a thank you card for them -- it got some news coverage & then the press came out here -- the ladies just love talking to the PRESS -- all are naturals!  The politicians really enjoyed their "off the cuff" remarks!  I told all the ladies that my Father was a County Supervisor -- needless to say -- they were MOST IMPRESSED!!  These men (Commissioners/ interchanged w/ Supervisors) -- sure had FANCY quarters -- and drank coffee throughout!!

I'm watching the movie "Child Bride of Short Creek!"  Takes place in 1950s here in AZ --

Charlie has been sick -- had him to the Vet both Friday & today.  He's losing weight & seems to have lost his appetite -- so today he got a B-12 shot & now he's on a total of 5 medications -- perhaps a parasite disease -- the Vet said today better I keep him & try to feed him & give water syringe -- but easier said than done!!  Amazing enough he still has lots of energy -- curiousity -- I'm constantly saying "No Bite" -- he does know what it means -- tho he doesn't care for it at all!!

Mother -- are you getting to use my Ex-Bike at all?  Wish you get to use it some -- so you could perhaps think of it as an early B'day present.  Perhaps by the time you are here in January I'll have my act together -- something hopefully homemade!

How will all of you be celebrating Mom's birthday -- I'm sure w/ all the good cooks in the house -- should be at least a day off for you!

1981 Catherine's Letter -Dec.15

 

Tuesday, December 15, 1981

Dear Mother, Dad, Mary & Mie Young,

Hi!  What's new in Ohio?  We had lots of snow here on Saturday and Sunday and then yesterday it started to rain and is still raining today so the snow is almost gone.  Very messy weather.

I meant to tell you on the phone, Mother, Wendy loves the advent calendar.  It has really helped her count the days until Christmas or at last be more aware of what the date is.  I just opened one of them.  I gave her the Sunday School books and thought I would save the other coloring book for Christmas.  We didn't really decide on the phone which present you would like to give her.  Do you have any preference?  I should find out today how much of the order arrived (hopefully all of it).  It will be almost too late to order anything else.  The stores here don't have a very broad selection.

I signed Wendy up for dancing lessons.  Several of her friends have been taking them.  The teacher picks them up at the Day Care center and takes them to the Grange (across the street practically going toward the Elks) where the classes are held.  After the class I will pick her up and take her back to Day Care.  We told Wendy it was a Christmas present.  She has her first class tomorrow at 10:30 and then not again until the first Wednesday in January.  We are going to get her the required ballet shoes for Christmas.  And she will also need "ballet pink" tights.  It costs $18.00 per month which seems steep but . . . .

We are thinking of getting a water bed for Christmas.  Our bed is becoming increasingly unsatisfactory.  It was guaranteed for 10 years (prorated) and we have had it half of that.  It doesn't bother me much but Gerry's back is alot more sensitive and he wakes up all stiff.  One of his friends who had similar back surgery has a water bed and is very strong in favor of them.  We figured our bed would fit into DeeDee's room but with not much room to spare.  Then we would put the bunk beds in Wendy's room.

We are looking forward to a few days without meetings.  Gerry has Lodge on Thursday night the 17th and then no more meetings for either one of us until Tuesday, Jan. 5.  On Thursday of that week we will be leaving for convention.  We are both looking forward to that also.  I think Wendy will be staying with the Woll's.  Got to go . . . ...

1961 Family Letter -Dec.9

 

Dearest Catherine, Mother & Daddy Uible, & all the Hortons,

This has been another busy week.  Tuesday night was School Board Meeting for Daddy and I had Enright Circle meeting at Mrs. Struppers [or Struffers?] Roberta stayed the short time (about ½ hour) that no one was here to look after them.  All went well.

Wednesday I did some shopping in Wilmington as well as did some errands -- John and Wilma Croghan went along.  Daddy went over to the auction Banyas [?] Buick was having.  That evening the Womans Club held their Guest Night program at Snow Hill and the Wilmington College [Indecipherable] Choir gave a most interesting recital.  Frances Terrell sings with the group and so does one of Mr. Robinson's son (of Buckeye Molding).  The Rudisills invited the Lockrau's [?] -- he is a nephew of Mr. Robinson.

When I was at school Thursday I heard Cheryl Cluxton calling her mother about some of the 7th graders wanting to buy a gift for Mr. Perry.  Some were willing & others didn't want to.  Sounded as if they had $8.50 to buy him a briefcase.

Friday night New Vienna played Woodrow Wilson (Soldier & Sailor's Home of Xenia) here and Roberta invited six to stay overnight -- Nancy, Jennifer, Linda Shaffer, Mary Pat Clear, Sue McKenzie, and Kathy Cornelius.  They had a treasure hunt gift exchange and talked most of the night.  The last of them went home after lunch yesterday -- then we all went to bed.

Serena was invited out to Betty Ann Walkers so had plenty of empty beds as we had seven sleeping bags across the living room floor.

I've got most of the Christmas cards out but thought I'd never get started.  We got one from Kim's father, one from the New Zealand Hiestands but will save them for you to see.

John had the 24 hour virus last night complaining of a terrible tummy ache and the heaves.  He's better today but didn't go to Sunday School for he seems to have some fever.  Serena thought she had a terrible sore throat so she stayed home too but is much better this afternoon.

There was a big fire out at the barn across from the Country Club where Williamses live -- Daddy said you could see it from downtown.  It burned down completely but they were able to save the other buildings.

There was a fire yesterday afternoon out at Marilyn & Carolyn Van Zants but hear they got it out before the fire truck arrived.

Tuesday night there is another band show between the basketball games.  Wednesday night is the Cantata at the church so doubt if we write again before we leave.  Looking forward to seeing all of you & hope Catherine will be ready to go home with us --

1971 Catherine's Letter -Dec.12

 

December 12, 1971

Dear Mom, Dad, Roberta, Serena, John, Mary and Grandma,

Hi!  Thanks from [for] the post card from Cleveland.  Hope you had a good time in Bahamas, and hope the rest of you managed to survive at home.

We only have a couple of more days of class and then we'll be finished with a whole semester at that great place of higher higher education, WMU, RAH! RAH!  I think I've learned alot so that makes it all worth while.

Roberta, we have taken your idea of making candles and are going at it on a large scale.  We have a bucket of sand and push the sand around to make a sort of a mold, and then pour the melted wax in.  Works really well.  We're going to give some of them away as Christmas presents.

Since K is closed for break, we've been working 8-5.  It certainly is different than working 5-11.  Especially money-wise, like the difference between $12.00 and $32.00.  Next weekend we're planning to take half of Friday and/or Monday off and go visit Bruce in Eureka, Illinois.  We'll plan on coming to New Vienna whichever weekend you get your Eagle think, John.  So keep us informed.

Mrs. Pinkham's husband (aged 49) had a brain hemorrhage two weeks ago.  She wasn't at work for about a week and a half.  I guess he's getting better now so she's there most of the time.

It seems than when I'm not writing to you I think of all sorts of things but when I start typing they all vanish from my mind.

I'm not sure yet whether we are going to mail Christmas presents to you or wait until we come.  The latter is more probable.  That way you could stretch Christmas out longer.  (You don't have to keep the Christmas tree up that long.)

John, there ae a bunch of Dick's old sweaters which I have put in a box to bring down to you.  They're probably too big now but might fit you eventually.

The latest news is that both Dick and I have applied for a job at the technical library at Upjohn Co.  We had an interview yesterday and the chances are good that one of us will get the job.  The title would be Reference Circulation Assistant and would be for 20 hours hours/week.  The pay is $3.50+ /hour.  Wow!  Will that ever help our budget!  We should know by the end of the week.

Grandma, we got your check & Christmas card today.  Thanks alot!  It was just what we needed, especially appropriate since we finished up our exams today and it is also our 4th month anniversary.

It looks like both Dick and I will get two A's and a B.  Although our B's are in different courses.

1961 Catherine's Letter -Dec.12

 

December 12, 1961

Dear Everybody,

I read Friday's News Journal and saw both Daddy's picture and the article about Mother's meeting.

What time Saturday do you plan to get here?  Marianne, Joe & I have to go Christmas Caroling Saturday night with the MYF.

The 7th grade building doesn't have a library but the Junior High Building does.  One day in Science our class went over to the library.  We were only there long enough to find a book about Science and check it out.

I am taking advantage of the good food they have in the High School Cafeteria.  I take just want I want everyday.

We went swimming Sunday and there was an undertow again.  Other people were in swimming so Grandma said we could go in if we held on to the rope.  I hope the weather is nice all next week because Grandma said she might take us swimming.

The Hortons are trying to get rid of oranges.  At an average I'm eating about 5 oranges a day.

I washed my hair again today.  It seems to get dirtier down here than it does in Ohio.

I've got homework so I have to say good-bye now.

1981 Catherine's Letter -Dec.8

 

December 8, 1981

Dear Mother, Dad, Mary & Mie Young,

Hi!  I am in hopes this will reach you by Friday so as to arrive on Mother's birthday but just in case it doesn't -- Happy Belated Birthday.  Speaking of birthdays, do I need to remind you that Gerry's is coming up?  It is the 17th.  Since it is on Thursday he will have a Lodge meeting so doubt if we will do too much at least on that day.The Elks birthday dinner is on Wednesday so at least he will get a Birthday dinner close to the day!  Also that Wednesday is the Red Cross Blood Drive.

The Charity Ball went off OK.  I wore my new long skirt and blouse that I had bought.  Gerry (and all the other officers) wore their matching suits.  They didn't have as big a crowd as at the 25th Anniversary but still a fairly large turn-out.

Wendy is getting all excited about Christmas.  We had thought of going shopping in Bend this weekend but decided we really didn't want to make the trip so I am getting ready to give Sears an order.   DeeDee won't be coming for Christmas this year.  She decided she would rather stay in California.
