Cloisters
HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]
Monday 1979 - Mary Fenwick passed away at age of 75. She retired in 1966 [beginning in NV in 1945] after 30 years of teaching. [She was born Mary Elizabeth Short and was originally from Winchester in Adams County. Russell "R.W." (1902-1986) was from Whiteoak Township in Highland County. He was NV School Supt. 1941-63 and Principal from 1963-66.]
Wednesday 1986 - [Beginning of a trip to the Philippines and Korea] Flew to Seattle, visited Morgans in Colfax, flew to Taipei, Hong Kong, then to Manilla, bought fancy shirt there, oh the rain, then to Seoul (went to the big church) then back to Cincy via Memphis on 10/13.
Sunday 1989 - [Laconia NH] UMC at Laconia, like theater in the round. Went to H's [Harriet Ballantyne, Jean's sister-in-law], note on the door, she is in the hospital with a broken hip. Called Bob and went to their house out 106, next road to left past top of hill, 7th house on the left. Bob and Pat were married in '74, he drives a semi, she works in bank. Have a nice VW camper van. Met Roger (1943-2008) and Betty at the hospital. They were married in '85. Drove out to Moultonborough to a country store. Noticed in town minutes of 1901 where teachers got $24/month (4-5 months/year), and in 1916 up to $40/month. Had German meal at William Tell Restaurant.
Monday 1990 - [Japan and China through 9/30]
Friday 1993 - [New England and Nova Scotia trip through 10/10/93]
Saturday 1994 - Went to Hidy Honda at 10:30 to get the 95EX model, list price $22,100 with sun roof, two air bags and AL Brakes. Then on to Festival of Sharing, bought a couple of napkin holders. Back to Yellow Springs, ice cream at Youngs, 1 dip $1.10, 2-$1.75, 3-$2.40. They have flavor of the week. Went to Yellow Springs P.L. and then supper at Carols in Y.S. Got gas for 105.9¢.
Sunday 1995 - [China trip with Roberta, etc. through 9/27/95]
Tuesday 1996 - [Hilton Head Island SC to Sea Island GA] Visited Church Museum, had picnic lunch on a nearby beach. Got to the Cloisters about 2pm and had room 324. Their cheapest category, a very nice room at $296 per day with 3 meals and 15% for tips. Had dinner in their dining room, 6 courses – appetizer, soup, salad, entree, sweets and beverage – too much food, though great service. It was a two hour experience, coat and tie required.
Friday 1999 - Busy day at the office, a 38 page contract from Grant Douglas.
*****
HH adds in 2010: the fancy shirt bought in the Philippines in 1986 is still being worn. In 1999 Grant Douglas was the fellow who bought Wells. He needed his head examined to get into a business in which he had no experience. His brother Glenn was here [at Wells in NV] for a few years and then he left and took a job in Philadelphia.
