1987 Catherine's Letter -Mar.5

Thurs. March 5, 1987
Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  Today marks the end of our first week as residents of Phoenix.  Wonder if that makes us long term residents yet?

We found a house to rent just down 35th Drive from Roberta & Sid's new house (maybe 7 or definitely 8 houses down).  It is quite spacious (1600 sq. ft.) with a large master bedroom on one side of the house, kitchen-dining, living room in the middle.  It is the same floor plan as a couple of the senior village houses.  The back yard is on 35th St, [Avenue] so there is considerable traffic noise if the sliding doors are open but we are already getting accustomed to that from staying here at 3509.  We got a discount on the deposit as we are cleaning and painting (touch-up) before moving in.  Our furniture is now scheduled to arrive the 11th so that will help us feel more settled after we get our things.

I have an interview at the County Library next Tuesday.  I went down (it's at 35th & Durango, which is just south of Buckeye Road) to check it out on Tuesday but it turned out they are only open to the public from 10-1 Mon-Fri.  I called later to inquire more about the positions that are open and they (the secretary) said that building is primarily the administration offices thus the short public hours.

Gerry went to the Job Service and talked to a Veteran's Counselor and was encouraged by the services they offer.  Once we get settled into our house I think he'll be better able to focus on the job situation.

Gerry's grandfather (his mother's father) died on Tuesday.  He was 86 but it was rather sudden.  He had a heart attack on Sunday and then died in the hospital.  At least Gerry had visited him recently.

I better get back to helping Gerry clean and get this in the mail.  Hope you get this before you head south.

PS Wendy is adjusting fairly well to school.  A girl she met at day camp last summer is in her clas.

1987 Roberta's Letter -Mar.3

Arriving in Phoenix March 1, 1987, Morgans were fortunate to temporarily share housing with the Uible-Kings who were also in the process of moving from one house at Senior Village to another, to make room for the new Dining Room.  Thanks, Roberta for getting us off to a good start in Phoenix!

[3/3/87]
Dear Family,

Did I tell you all I got notice of jury duty – started today – I'm now in the 1st waiting area.  Hoping I'll not get picked – it is for PHX Municipal Court.  Interesting enough – the court is in the same complex as Long Term Care office – 7th Street / Van Buren area.  Remember we tried to come into the parking lot & got 3rd degree by the security guard – it's right there.

Wendy seemed to get along fine 1st day of school.  Interesting enough one of the girls in her class named CATHERINE was one of her friends at YWCA camp.

Yesterday afternoon got a phone call for Catherine – to set up employment interview for 3/10/87 9:00 AM – w/ Maricopa County.  Of course – she is hopeful for Glendale to come through!

When I left this AM (7:45) Gerry had already left the house for employment office.  This afternoon they have some appointment to see houses.  There are  3  right w/ in 2 blocks of us for rent.  Their furniture won't be coming now till 3/11 – our move is scheduled for 3/13.  Tho we already have  2  rooms of furniture there now.  All of our family room furniture is down thee plus most of the living room stuff.  That way we can use the living room for boxes to go down.  We had thought of taking them on down – but now have decided to wait.  The carpets are to be professionally cleaned (in 3509) plus if we wait till after furniture gets down we can unload boxes immediately – in bookcases, etc.  Also they won't be there to get in the way when the furniture comes down.

Sunday Miss Wendy did go to church with us.  She was all dressed up & did seem to enoy going.  Then afterwards we ate out – at Burger King.  We had made plans earlier to go play miniature golf in the afternoon.  Beverly & her 8 year old daughter came with us for the golf.  Catherine & Gerry met us there.

9:30 We just had our Orientation – sounds like it is going to be a long day.  I have my self stationed at the right place tho – directly across from the free phone! (HA!)  We are in a huge waiting room area – about 100 people.  Were told there were 15 court rooms – but only 7 were for Jury caes.  We were also told most cases last 1-3 days & lunch is from 12-1:30.  Alse we get paid $12 after 1st day – plus milage 21¢ per miles from center of our zip code to here.  Even tho they pay for parking it can be quite a hassel – so I'm lucky I can use Long Term Care parking lot.

Last night we ate at Ed Debevics (sp?) we had taken Wendy there last summer & it had made a lasting impression on her.  The Morgans treated us – do you remember the place?  It's got the 1950's theme – lot of signs, blue plate specials, etc.  Pretty reasonable prices – most meals about $3.95-$4.95.

3:30 PM – Still waiting – this is worse than working!

Ate lunch in a health food store w/ small lunch counter right downtown.  Guy told me his parents opened up 1st health food store in PHX in 1932.

This is one of the most inefficient programs.  I'm sure I could organize them better –
Have been told we will be held till 5:00 pm.

Love,
Roberta

1987 Catherine's Letter to John -Jan.12

1-12-1987
Dear John & X,

Hi!  Thanks for your letter and the McD. coupons.  We always enjoy free food!  There is a McDonald's in Moscow.

We had a good time in Maine.  Sanford seemed alot busier – more shopping centers, restaurants and lots of traffic.

Haven't heard anything yet concerning the job I applied for in Tempe.  If we move it will probably be to the Phoenix area.  Our second choice would be Oregon.  Or possibly something will turn up for Gerry in this area.

Thanks again for the coupons and hope you have a Happy New Year!

Love,
Catherine

P.S.  See you in April 1988 if not before!

1983 Senior Village 2nd Birthday -Nov.4

Posted by Picasa
NEWS RELEASE

SENIOR VILLAGE CELEBRATES SECOND ANNIVERSARY

On November 4th [1983] a celebration will be held commemorating the second birthday of Senior Village.  It was two years ago to the day that the first house was opened.

The project was implemented to provide health and social services for low income older persons who no longer could live along in the community, but did not need institutional nursing home care.  The residents share the houses and support each other in a home-like atmosphere.

The pilot project has grown from seven houses to include nine residential homes with a capacity for serving 38 residents at any one time.  In the first 20 months of operation, a total of seventy low income older persons had been placed at Senior Village.  Twenty-nine percent came directly from nursing homes, thus reducing, by $127,252, the cost to county for 5,415 days if nursing home reimbursements.  Forty-one were deflected from a costlier level of care by residency at Senior Village.  Twelve residents were able to return to family or independent living.

The residents have ranged in age from 60 to 95 years. One 83 year old lady had previously resided in a nursing home for 21 months.  She suffered form arthritis and depression and was seldom out of bed.  She has been in residence at Senior Village now for 22 months.  She uses a can for ambulating to noon meals and outside activities.  She takes pride in taking care of her own room, does her own laundry, attends social activities, and arranges weekly hair appointments.  She has become recognized as the chief cook in her house and her quick wit has made her popular as an entertainer at Senior Village parties.  She derives a great deal of satisfaction and affection from her pet cat that she has acquired and trained.

The houses were donated by the Maricopa County Flood District.  The renovations, furnishings, and continuing maintenance of the properties were accomplished through the commitment of service clubs, churches, volunteer labor, private and business contributions, and resident fees in partnership with Maricopa County Revenue Sharing funds.  Value of volunteer labor and donations of furniture are estimated at $35,000 for the first year of operation of Senior Village.  The staffing and implementation of services resulted from a funding commitment of the Area Agency on Aging, residents fees, and revenue sharing funds.

Volunteers continue to provide service to the residents int he way of transporting for shopping and hair appointments, friendly visiting, and involvement in community, social, and church activities.

Senior Village, in northwest Phoenix, has demonstrated its success in quality of care and cost effectiveness int he care of the elderly.  It is planned to replicate the concept in the East Valley area utilizing the social atmosphere of a mobile home park.  Six trailers have been offered by the Maricopa County Flood District to start the expansion to the East Valley.  Six more mobile homes will be needed to complete the project.

Entertainment for the Senior Village celebration will be provided by the talented residents with singing, music, and poetry.  Original Christmas crafts designed and made by Senior Village will be on display.

1982 MV in AZ - Dec. 5

A few weeks back we read postcards about MV's travels from Columbus to Phoenix by bus to work for the Salvation Army at Metrocenter Mall – once one of the biggest and most bustling malls in the west.  MV played her part in mall history by ringing the bell and collecting donations for the Salvation Army.  The mall, which opened early in the 1970s has been on a downward spiral since 1990. Here's an article from the Dec. 10, 2012 AZ Republic: New owner puts Phoenix Metrocenter Mall on a mission.  Transcription follows.
Dec. 5, 1982
Dear Mom and Dad,

It was nice to have the day off from work, except most of the afternoon I was bored – mostly from laziness as there is always work to be done around the house.

I was about to go crazy ringing bells (it's worse than folding jump ropes), so I asked to have Saturdays off – that was no problem as there are only 2 left before Christmas.  [Christmas was on Saturday in 1982.]  My supervisor is Lt. Bell – she's 21, been an officer in the "Army" 2-3 years. I guess she's engaged to this guy who also is in the Army, but not stationed here in Phoenix – possibly Chandler?  My boss, Maj. Pack is about 60-65, very easy going – I have seen the Maj. twice – the day I started and one night he picked up the kettles.  I only see Lt. Bell once a day, which is when she picks up my kettle at night, which takes about 30 seconds.  Otherwise I'm on my own all day.

You've obviously heard about the MCI deal where you can call anywhere (in the US) free for 3 minutes.  One of my friends in Maintenance got me VIP card that way I wouldn't have to fill out the forms – but I can't think of anyone I could call and talk to for only 3 minutes.

I tried to call the Garretts tonight to see about going over to Mesa sometime but they were walking out the door and couldn't talk.  I hope to go over Saturday and possibly spend the night.

I think Marion and Roberta are sick.  We have only been to Swenson's once since I arrived!  Roberta and I did go to Baskin & Robbins one night last week while Marion was gone.  She had a coupon – Sundaes, 2 for 1.

I finished one cross stitch project this week, and started another tonight – mostly out of boredom – I should have it finished by Wednesday.  I hope to get a couple new cross-stitch books with my paycheck Friday.  I will make Roberta, Marion, John and X's Christmas presents out of it.

I am anxious to see how much I am being paid – whether min. wage or possibly more form what I have heard.  Anyway, the first paycheck will be Friday.  I plan to buy and cook dinner or else take Roberta and Marion out.  But judging from what I've seen, they might enjoy eating in more.

Roberta & Charlie have had several run-in's lately, so Roberta is anxious to get rid of him.  She now wants a schnauzer (?).  Marion is making some kind of speech tomorrow at school.  For the occasion Roberta is taking Charlie to the groomer's – then to school for the speech.  Personally, Charlie would be the last invited if I were speaking.

Love, MV

Oh My

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Sunday 1954 - [Naples to Rome, Europe Tour]

Tuesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Wednesday 1990 - Mother seems confused - "Oh, My" - wonders where she is.  Lions Club program of 2 Fairfield students [north of Cincinnati] on science projects.

Thursday 1991 - Quit using the "plunger" to feed Mother.  It takes an hour and a half to feed her.  Got letter from Frank about IBT trips -- he rubs Jean the wrong way.

Saturday 1992 - Nice breakfast at Murphin Ridge - Amish bread, big glass of fresh OJ, cantaloupe with kiwi and strawberries this with Vermont Molasses Cottage Cheese pancakes.  Drove to Columbus to meet Roberta at the airport, then to John and Julie's for lunch at 1030 Shaw Drive, their new home.  Julie is quite the chef -- asparagus with dried tomatoes and other things.  Came home via Hillsboro, GHU wide awake.

Sunday 1993 - [Arizona]

Monday 1994 - [to Ohio from Kentucky] Don was going to the Dr. -- he has a persistent cough and hard to keep food down.  We had lunch at the Heritage, only the bar area open at noon.  The gal brought us the wrong menu and then the wrong bill.  At UMC Board Meeting decided to go ahead with the SS room A.C.

Tuesday 1995 - [to Virginia]  We left at 9 and had lunch with Mary Ann Lewis at Bob Evans in Charleston [WV].  Jean had trouble recognizing her.  On to the Homestead [Resort in Hot Springs VA], a swim in their pool then dinner at 7:30, very formal with piano music.  Had movie at 9pm which didn't appeal to us.  [Added in 2011: We finally asked the head waiter if they knew Mary Ann Lewis and they did.  She was Peaches college friend, who has since passed on.]

Thursday 1996 - Jean has a cold.  Choir program for Maundy Thursday -- "Oh for the wonder of it all"

Friday 1997 - [Phoenix] Left for Grand Canyon, had lunch at Furr's in Flagstaff.

Saturday 1998 [Shepherdstown WV]

Sunday 1999 - [Easter, Granada Spain] [This entry could have taken place the day before or the day after, info about this trip is not necessarily date specific.]  Got up to Alcazar about 9AM and our admission time was 2:30.  No problem putting in time in other areas there.  Having Easter week parades with big crowds, reminded us of Ku Klux Klan parades.

Monday 1993 - [Phoenix]

Tuesday 1994 - Had an appointment at Main Medical for annual physical - previous one was in November 1992. MY PSA is 5.6 and it should be between 0-4.0. Cost was $221. Kay Dick _________ was in office with her new baby and her 7-year-old son. It looks like the lodge [IOOF] made a real boo-boo as the Ultimate Church group may be a branch of the [Ku Klux] Klan. We called Cynthia in England, cheapest rates before 7AM and after 6PM.

Friday 1996 - [to Newark] We left for Newark about 4PM, ate at Wendy's at I-270 and 256, cost $5.20. Saturday 1997 - Went to New Vienna Senior Citizens, John and Karen Hughes Bernard had the program on their pick up truck camper trip to Alaska over a 2 month period. Mowed grass, really didn't need it, but felt it would be too tall in 9 more days. Flowers on corner of house are in bud.

March 28, 1989-99 with original

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Saturday 1992 - We went to the New Vienna Senior Citizens - Jo Harner had asked Jean to give a "career" biography, just like the Clinton County Retired Teachers. Esther talked for 20 minutes and just got to age 20. Then Betty Thompson, Jean, Orville and Jo Harner filled up the rest of the hour. For supper the New Vienna Boy Scouts had a spaghetti supper for $3.50. GHU ate well, especially the pie and the strawberries.

Sunday 1993 - [Grand Canyon to Phoenix] Back to Phoenix, lunch at Luby's. $3.98 for their special.

Tuesday 1995 - Article in today's WNJ about Bob Streber, as they closed their store in New Vienna after 63 years (he is 64) and will reopen the convenience store just north of town on Rt. 73. Jean went to the Dr. -- third time regarding her poison ivy.

Thursday 1996 - Article in April "Nation's Business" about the Library Book Stores in Clayton, MO. [Mid-County Branch of the St. Louis County Library District is located in Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis, does not now list anything about a Book Store.]

Saturday 1998 - [Phoenix] Catherine has good oatmeal. Kings picked us up about 10AM and we visited models at Pebble Creek. The furnishings all look great though perhaps not too practical. Had "lunch" the complimentary hot dog, pretzels and beverage. Then to Del Webb's Sun City Grand - more of the same with cold rain (warmer in Ohio in low 80's). Went to Adam and Wendy's place on Sierra Vista and Maryland, just east of 7th St. They have 2 dogs and 2 cats and do they have the tapes, etc. Went to this Italian Restaurant nearby with them, Morgans and Adams' parents, who bring their own fresh spinach [in unopened bag] to go with the salmon. [They knew the staff well.]

Sunday 1999 - [Portugal and Spain trip through April 8]

HH added in 2010: Re: 1998 – Now that you mention spinach, it comes back. Should have written more about Sun City Grand visit. We are happy w/ 20238 Alta Loma with walkable distance to the store and the library. The hospital would be a stretch, but then we do have 911.

HH's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Thursday 1987 - Morgans moving to Phoenix.

Sunday 1989 - S.S.  dinner (?) at Wendy's, Super Salad Bar $3.19, then to Extended Care, CMH, Kroger's, Walmart (what a crowd) where we bought a telephone answering unit, then Bob and Carl's.  Made out an order to Performance Bike Shop.

Monday 1990 - [NYC to Philadelphia]  Took bus to Philadelphia at 10am, $15, train was $42, walked to Quality Hotel [Inn] $70.  Walked over to Independence area.  Amazed at the number of bedrolls on porch at FRB [Federal Reserve Bank, homeless people rather than employees I'd guess].  Had lunch at Arby's, saw visitor's center, Franklin Court and old P.O.  Jeanne Huber's [?] (her husband died about 15 years ago) son Rick, with Fireman's Fund, took us out to her house.  Had late supper (8pm) as dish was not thawed in time.  He brought us back about 10pm.

Tuesday 1991 - [NYC to Texas]  We flew to San Antonio, had Alamo rental car, $97/week with free mileage.  Reservations at Sheraton Gunter, $69 + 13% tax +$6 for garage -- very nice.  Can ride streetcar bus for 10¢.

Wednesday 1992 - [Israel]

Friday 1993 - [Guatemala]

Saturday 1994 - [Maui, Hawaii]  We were up on Ohio time, 5 hours different, and drove to volcano where the bikers were ready to coast downhill.  It was cold and we could see snow on the higher peak on the island of Hawaii.  Had breakfast at the Sandalwood, on the road up there where the bikers also stopped.  Drove over to the other side of the island, much more touristy.  Had supper at Mama's Fish House, near Paia.  Very nice and expensive, entrees in the high $20s.

Sunday 1995 - [Kentucky]  Went to 9:30 service with MV, then to SS and Church at Burnside.  MV fixed lunch, Ginny and I walked down to the piers, the church and back.  Went to MV's evening service then had bean soup afterward.

Monday 1996 - Called MUH, she has a new 30" TV set.

Wednesday 1997 - [South Africa]

Thursday 1998 - [to KY] We leave for Somerset.  Had lunch at Boston Market, supper at Rockin Robin's Cafe.  We were to babysit while MV goes with a group to Fraser UMC in Montgomery, AL.  They had a cancellation so I went with them.

Cool temperatures in SCW

Last night I actually closed the windows as the air was too cool - low 60s, I think.

With all the excitement of the big lunch out on Thursday at Persian Garden, I forgot to ask Catherine about the big San Diego trip. By the way, Pat called to tell me she had a wonderful time.

Hot Summer in the City

Anybody else see the NYT article in today's paper about Phoenicians who summer in San Diego every year?

If today is 110 degrees or above it will be the 27th day to do so this summer - which ties a record. My little weather add-on on my Internet browser says high of 109 degrees in SCW. The tv news is forecasting 112, I think.

Anyway, the link for the article is in the title of this post or here. It is a permalink which means that unlike regular NYT link - which expire (well, they don't exactly expire, but after 7 days they link to the payment required article).

It is interesting to compare the most blogged NYT articles to the most emailed NYT articles. The most blogged are almost always much more political. So many political blogs.

107 days

It last rained in Phoenix 107 days ago. I use recycled bath and sink water for plant watering.

I just got back in from watering plants out in the yard - the citrus trees, those two orange flowering plants and some various other plants. That planter that had four cacti in it . . . I consulted with Catherine last week and decided that perhaps I should not have been watering the planter at all as parts of the cacti were turning brown. Now two of the four plants are completely brown - and the remaining two aren't very green. I've started watering them again.

Today the temporary SCW library opens - the table tennis area in the Sports Pavilion. I've heard varying reports of when the newly expanded library will re-open - three months and end of year.

It is supposed to be about 115 degrees today. ROBERTA got some sunburn yesterday. I worked.

Persian Garden Cafรฉ Restaurant – Middle Eastern Food – Organic and Healthy

Persian Garden Cafรฉ Restaurant – Middle Eastern Food – Organic and Healthy

This is where Gerry, Catherine and I ate yesterday. There is a link for the menu. Catherine's favorite - which she ordered - is the Spinach burger. (I did try it and it was excellent.) Gerry ordered his usual - Mexican gyros or something like that.

Biltmore time

Just over 24 hours until the Biltmore trip: ETD 0800 11/6/06. Have had one last minute cancellation---anyone interested? Everyone must be pretty busy since not much blogging going on. Even Roberta the blogger has changed her name! Getting cool here and almost had a hard freeze last night; heat in the house feels good at night!
