1983 GHU letter -Dec.18

From the "found after the designated year" file, this letter was written shortly before Grandma and the Hortons and the rest of us went to Phoenix for Roberta & Sid's wedding.

Sun. 18th [Dec. 1983]

Dear family -

My letter writing has some what been neglected lately.  Too many Christmas activities.  Cindy & Rob were here this afternoon with presents & a light supper.  They leave Tues. for Ind. to spend Christmas with her folks.  So we had a little Christmas while they were here.  Also Frances & John dropped in for a while.  Right now Mary joined the choir at 6 o'clock & they were to go out to sing Christmas Carols.  Bill just left to join them at a home where they will have a covered dish supper.  He took a pumpkin pie.

Last Fri. the Lions Club had their Christmas turkey dinner at the Congregational Church.  I was a guest & they had a very nice dinner program.  It rained all day & was fair when we came home.  But what a day & evening.  At least it was nice to get in the car in the garage & we were fortunate enough to park right at the entrance so didn't get wet.

Last Fri. a lady from the L.W. Play House gave a Christmas Reading for the Literary program which was very good & then there was a tea afterward.  It seems as if there must always be refreshments.  Then you hear all the talk about dieting.

Sat. Larna had a party at the Park house for a couple who had been married for 50 years.  M. & Bill went.  I was invited but since I didn't even know them I didn't go.  Mary said more came than expected.  They served a lunch at 12.  I would say a dinner from what Mary said.  I guess it was a carry in by the guests for it seems as if the Hortons got cake.  This week the V.I.A. [?] tomorrow go to a nursing home to sing & then come back to the church to eat.  Mary goes to play for singing but I don't think I am going.  Wed. there is to be the Church Christmas program with a turkey dinner first.  We plan to attend that affair.

We must begin to wonder what we will need in Phoenix.  This letter is for the family.  I should have written to you H. & Jean before you left but I don't get to things like I might.  If I have a room with more than the 1 bed one or more of the girls can room with me & that will be fine with me.

Roberta, I hope things are shaping up for you & every one has a safe trip in traveling.  See you soon.

Love to all
Merry Christmas

1969 GHU postcard -Nov.

Caption: U.S. Post Office - Lake Worth, Florida

[Postmarked Nov. 27? 1969]

3:30 - Arr. safely at 2:55.  By the time Joe parked car, checked all my baggage & got me settled on the plane we had just the right amt of time.  When he asked to help me they told us to get right on first.  By holding to both sides of railing and Joe carrying the cane, purse & cookies, I went up the steps juts fine.  It looked as if the sky is going to be clouded.  We are off on the dot of 4:10 arr. in Louisville - 20 minutes late on our way.  The sky was white ad blank.  Drinks -- coffee, ginger ale & stronger -- not free?  So didn't get anything.  5:30 at Atlanta leaving 6 & every seat about filled.

It is now 7pm & finished dinner.  Steak with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, apple mixed salad, roll, banana pudding.  Arriving in WPN 7:30 at Mary's & all are fine.  Bill was at the plane.

Love, Mother

1989 Mary Horton letter to HH -Apr.25

TUES. - April 25th (CHAD'S 1st BIRTHDAY PARTY) [1989]

Dear Harold:

It's been a Party week-end!!  Cindy's Uncle and Aunt came Fri. PM late and left Monday PM.  They did not drive this time as they had a dead-line to meet back home.  They flew in and stayed near the airport; which isn't too far from Rob's.  So I didn't have them 'under foot' all week-end.  Ha!  However, the house got a 'new look' (clean anyway) and 2 beds made up unnecessarily.  Sat. Cindy had a party for Chad & relatives with a lot of nice gifts.  Uncle and Aunt were overly generous!!!  Bill and I took Ray and Helen out to dinner that evening and a short tour around Palm Beach and then played Rummy-O.  It was a beautiful evening . . . blue sky and not too warm riding . . . might be a different story on your bike!!!

Then to-day, it was the REAL BIRTHDAY (as if Chad knew the difference???) and she had Mothers and their babies who belong to the "Baby and Me" Club sponsored by the PB School Board.  The two G'Mas were invited!  Like a pre-school nursery with an activity room.  You've never seen so many toys, etc. . . especially after they opened up the gifts!!  Babies all ages and sizes!  All boys but one chubby girl.  They got along real well!  The adults had Pasta, party sandwiches, a salad 'munchie' plate, which you would have gone for.  Drinks, cake and ice cream.  Chad is real cute . . . always a smile . . . he has a great sense of rhythm . . . play that music and he 'sings and sways'!!!  He's an eye-stopper wherever you take him!!!

Tonight we go to Fellowship Class meeting.  Wed. the Youth are putting on a ham dinner.  Executive Bd. meeting Th AM and Choir that night . . . IF I go!!!

Roberta called today!!  She has her plane reservation for OHIO on June 21st . . . or she may have written you . . . flying into Cols.  Fare reasonable!!  Will be fun to see her again.  I understand you and Jean will be on different E.H. Trips???  She said that she hasn't had any cards from you!!  I rated!!  We got 2 cards . . . THANKS!!!

The sewarage line is coming up 11th Ave. (our driveway) tomorrow!!  So a lot of commotion and dust will be flying!!  At least we have our air conditioner on!!  Will have to have the car out of the garage early in the morning.  Not being used to getting into a HOT car . . . . this will be a change!!!  Ted took a weeks trip over to Orlando and is due back Wed. or Thursday.  Probably park in his driveway.  Had thought about taking off before the project got on its way but I have too many loose ends . . . can't possibly be ready too much ahead schedule to head toward  N.C. and Ohio.  We're playing it 'by ear' as to day of departure???  All these huge things are laying on the north side of our street (11th).

How goes the trip?  People must think you're crazy to bike across the USA!!!  What is the incentive to put out that much energy???  I can see biking for FUN . . . but an endurance contest with yourself????  You should have some interesting tales to tell and I want to be around to hear them????  I'm glad Jean is home!  We've talked several times and it is nice for Mother to have her close by!!!  See ya 1st of June???

Love, Mary & Bill

1969 GHU postcard to Roberta -Apr.10

Cavalry United Methodist Church, Lake Worth, Florida

Thurs.  evening [April 10, 1969]

Dear Roberta – This is the interior to the new church.  I did hear the sermon last Sun. because I tried using the ear aids.  The church is simply too large but it does have a beautiful window.  Cris celebrated his birthday yesterday by having two dinners.  We had a little extra & Rainie was a guest.  Then it was announced at school that Cris was appointed the "Boy of the Year."  A trophy was given to him by the Exchange Club who sponsor the affair & a dinner was also given at a meeting & he was invited.  Enjoyed your letter & I hardly realize that the time is drawing near to return to Ohio.  The car license plates came yesterday.

Love to all, Grandma

Dear Jean: ––
Does this look familiar?  Are you counting the days until the 3rd?  I can imagine the bustle & excitement up Cleveland way.  Enjoyed your last note.  I can recommend that canned chicken!   Bill & I ate it the week-end before we left & it was SWELL !

We have had some grand beach weather but last few days have been windy & cool!  Jo-Jo liked your Valentine so much he literally tore it up. Ha!  He is getting brown crawls all over the place & stands up to chairs.  The next time we see you it will be Mrs. Uible!  Hmm – does it sound funny?

1936-37 HH Report Cards

Interesting that only one signature was recorded by CJ on the New Vienna report card, at the end of the first grading period.  This was the year of the family trip to California and other western points, so perhaps didn't come back to New Vienna after the 2nd period, until the last 6-week segment.  The Lake Worth report card for the same school year includes only the 4th period (or first period of the 2nd semester).  Meaning the 3rd and 5th periods were spent traveling, or were not sufficiently attended to justify ranking.

Best subjects include Citizenship, Reading, History, and Geography.  Lake Worth includes a lot more subcategories for each subject than New Vienna, and also a whole section on "Habits and attitudes desirable for good citizenship."  Weight at age 11 was 89 pounds.

1965 Serena's Letter & Christmas Program

1965 Calvary Methodist Church, Lake Worth Florida -Dec.1
Christmas Program with Serena as Mary, Cris Horton as Storekeeper
[postmarked 6 Dec 1965]
Dear Everybody (including M.V.)

Please put the program in my file (after you look at my beautiful name).  Mr. pathethitic [sic] (David Starr) was so busy being nervos [sic] he forgot to act up and (I was to busy being nervos (too) I forgot to remind him).

Very, Very sorry to say thought but anyway I didn't have any normal cold I had a gigantic one so at the end of 2 weeks I was completely over with my cold.

Your unhomesick daughter or sister,
Serena (Uible)

P.S.  Be seeing you soon (I hope).  We saw Snow White (at a movie) details later.
P.P.S.S. I can play Silent Night on the organ and I am working on the chords and pedals.  Aunt Mary want to keep me to teach me to play the piano.

1973 Roberta's Letter - June 3

June 3rd [1973]

Dear Family –

Hi!  Hope all of you are fine.  I've got a very busy week ahead so thought I better write you tonight to keep you up on the news –

First of all – hope you all thought of me today – as you know I would have received my Associate Degree from U.C. today. (Yes??!!)  I did receive 2 graduation cards - which I've got to admit surprised me alot - they were both from kids at U.C. – also graduating - though I didn't send them cards!

I did get an invitation for me - plus all of you all - to at out at a banquet w/U.C. paying – it's a shame we didn't take advantage of it - you know there wasn't too much U.C. gave away FREE!!

I heard yesterday from Florida Atlantic Univ – I was accepted for summer quarter – WOW – I was pretty surprised!!  So now I've got to take some kind of tests down there June 13th – and Registration is June 15th.  Classes begin June 18th – goodness - that's NOT that far away!!  I just want to take 1 course over the summer – Comparative Criminal Justice – which meets once a week from 5:50 to 10:00 P.M. on Tuesdays.  I'm going to have a pretty busy summer w/ work, and the first aid course at J.C. (junior college) and Florida Atlantic.

You know at 1st I wasn't working very many hours a week - but now - they are seemingly making up for loss time.  My schedule for this week - starting today.
11:55-5:40 Sunday
10:00-4:00 Monday
10:10-9:10 Tuesday
OFF Wednesday

10:10-9:10 Thursday
4:00-9:10 Friday
9:40-5:40 Saturday

See - what I meant when I said I had a pretty busy week ahead of me - On those long days 10:10-9:10 I'll be working w/ Security.  As for the other days - time will tell.  I've been in the Noticue [?] dept alot - which I really like alot.  I really like being on the selling floor – who know - maybe I'll go into business yet!!

As for school - Math keeps getting harder - I did get a 'B' on my 1st test - but I'm not sure how I did on the 2nd one.  The course is now half over – I don't know what kind of grade I'll get out of it - but I heard D's will transfer OK  (HA!)

Mary Virginia a woman I work w/ was telling me about the summer camp at the "Y" which her kids really enjoy every summer.  If you think you might like it - you could think about going to the 3rd session - which is from July 9th to July 20th.  I'll enclose the folder about it [not included] If you don't like the idea - it's fine but Sylvia said that her kids rally love it!  As far as you getting there & back - that wouldn't be a problem.

Aunt Mary & Uncle Bill will be back on Wednesday – the time has gone rally fast since they have been gone.  Mr. Garnett will be picking them up at the airport - I've got school that night & Rob has band practice.  From all of the post cards we've had from them - they have really had a good time – especially the trip down the Rhine River.

OH - this is more for Grandma - but Rev. Clark resigned down at the Church - and today was his last Sunday.  Also Mrs. McGrew (sp?) says hello & hopes all is fine – Also all of the women in Grandma's Sunday School class are always asking me about Grandma.  All say Hello.

Since I work Sundays I don't make it to the Sunday Evening Services.  As the summer progresses there seem to be less & less people!!

It's getting late.  I'll wait till morning to close - in case I think of anything else!

Monday 7:30 A.M.  Did forget to mention that Antiock (sp?) College has sure been in the news down here - one night even saw it on the news at 11:00 - (on television)

Noticed it was 85º yesterday in Cincinnati -

Well - I've got to get moving - guess I better at least look at my Math this morning –– Love ––– Berts

Feb. 13, 1989-99 Liver and Onions

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Feb. 12, 1989-99 Lunch at the Breakers

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Sunday 1989 - [Peoria IL to Dayton] Went to Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church, then had lunch at the Raintree (Regency Hotel) [neither Raintree or Regency currently listed in Peoria], they were not busy.  Drove out to Serena's library.  Left for home, supper on 16th St in Indianapolis, stayed at Knights Inn on York Rd (Dayton North) for $26.  NVUMC attendance = 82.

Monday 1990 - Jean takes van to Dayton to get wheel chair lift put in and go to library meeting.  Roberta called, GHU in great pain, got new medicine @$117 which she thought was terrible [both the medicine and the price probably].

Tuesday 1991 - Clinton County Lincoln Day Dinner at Roberts Arena, $15 each or 2 for $25.  Bob McEwen spoke.  HQT, AW Hause, Ed Johnson, Stan Hannah and I went.

Friday 1993 - [NYC]  Busy day at the Toy Building.  Bruce came over for breakfast and saw most of the salesmen.  We went to the theater just off 3rd Ave on 13th to see Scapin by Moliere.  Quite enjoyable, about a belligerant father and his son getting married, a lot of audience participation.

Saturday 1994 - [Newark] Had brunch in Granville with John and Julie and Julie's parents.  Then we stopped at the so-called Bargain Barn of Huntington Clothes, did buy a necktie for $5.  Newark was a sea of ice, much wose than NV and Shaw Drive was really bad.  John took our car in and out of the driveway.  First time in two years than Denison canceled classes.

Sunday 1995 - Met the Goodings in Waynesville for lunch.  $6.95.  Bob has been busy helping Jim on his "new" house.  We then went to Xenia Library.  Returned John's call, he is going to Mexico City with their minister on Thursday and returning Saturday in regard to Mission.  More zero weather though great sunshine.

Wednesday 1997 - [South Africa]

Thursday 1998 - Taking pictures at church for the new directory.

Friday 1999 - [Florida]  Eight of us had lunch at the Breakers -- an experience.  Tip was 19% and entrees @24.95.  An interesting dessert was the 1/2 coconut filled with ice cream, etc.  Then they took the coconut back and sliced it for us.

Feb. 11, 1989-99 Kate tears the wallpaper

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Saturday 1989 -[Peoria IL]  We changed rooms at motel so we could have a tub.  The three of us went out to supper at cafeteria.  Serena had jello and bread.

Sunday 1990 - Had 91 at church today.  Sermon on honesty.  Went to Wilmington to see movie "Driving Miss Daisy" $2.75 before 6pm.  Had soup at Carolyn's yogurt place for 89c.  Mary Virginia came in to go to mission meeting tomorrow.

Thursday 1993 - [to NYC] Flew to NYC, staying at Penington Friends House @$90/night with breakfast and supper.

Friday 1994 - [to Newark] Met John and Julie at Granville Inn for a nice "banquet", about 60 from their church, Spring Hill Baptist.  Had "people bingo" to get acquainted, e.g. who had ridden a bike across the U.S.  Kate is really crawling and likes to tear the wallpaper at the corner of the living room and hallway.  They have put down new wood flooring in their kitchen, dining room and 1/2 bath.

Saturday 1995 - After returning lampshades to Walmart, we went on up to Fairfield Mall near Wright State, new things going up all round there.  Ate at Red Lobster.  Came down I-675 to Pharmore and got some 1/2 price birthday cards.  Nice book store near Pharmore.   Got gas for 98.9c.  Jean got book Border Music by Robert Waller.

Sunday 1996 - Flew home from Bermuda.  Car turned 20,000.

Tuesday 1997 - [South Africa]

Wednesday 1998 - Delayed Lions Club tonight.  Doris Caldwell spoke of the Women's Center.  Still recall her husband Floyd telling of his experience at the Columbus airport in meeting exchange student.  Two appointments today:  Morton and Linkhart.

Thursday 1999 - [Florida]  Joe had opening of art show (27 paintings) on Lucerne Ave.  Lots of people but no buyers.  Spoke with Lorraine Marco B.....[?] she is diabetic, travels with a non-handy [?] male friend.  Visited Whitehall Museum in Palm Beach.

Feb. 9, 1989-99 New K-Mart

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999

Thursday 1989 - [Peoria IL]  Took Serena to the hospital (Methodist) for ourpatient procedure at 11am.  Had lunch in the hospital cafeteria.  We all left hospital at 5pm.  Serena had temperature of 103, we bought a new thermometer.  Stayed at Towne House Motel $27/night.

Saturday 1991 - Vivian Hiestand called us about her two extra tickets for "harp" program.  Very good.  Also Lions Club Pork BBQ @ $4 and $2.50.  Saturday profile on John Waters (new County Commissioner). Why are a coach and a politican alike?  Because they are smart enough to understand the game and dumb enough to think it is important.

Sunday 1992 - Wilmington M.C. meeting at West Chester, the Salisburys took us.  NV had 9 people there.  Went to Carol S. Webster's house in Sharonville.  Bob Salisbury had just gotten back from Japan.  It was 10pm when we finally got home.

Tuesday 1993 - GHU in great spirits today

Thursday 1995 - Had letter from Eloise Satterfield about wanting to move back to Hillsboro.  New K-Mart opened in Hillsboro.  We took Joan Gruber to square dancing and Valentine Dinner Dance.  Dan Quayle announced his withdrawal from the 1996 presidential race

Sunday 1997 - Overnight flight to Cape Town South Africa

Monday 1998 - Lincoln Day Dinner at Roberts Arena @$15, lots of steak, green beans, baked potato, cherry pie and salad.  State Representative Ed Kasputis spoke, told story about having facts straight, but drawing wrong conclusion.  He was born in 1961, a Case Western Reserve University law graduate.

Tuesday 1999 - [Florida] Had lunch at Cracker Barrel in Daytona Beach, near race track where car races would soon be held, arrived in Lantana and had supper at Marianne's in Boynton.  Same guest room [at MUH's] as previously.

Who would have known?

PAINTED STREETS
Step into this South Florida town, and watch an art gallery appear beneath your feet.
On a sunny Saturday morning, the streets of Lake Worth, Florida, blossom in colors as bright as a garden. Hundreds of artists kneel with chalk in hand, sketching their entries for the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival in February. Artists come from as far away as California to draw more than 240 paintings that are reproductions of classics that hang in museums. Many artists attend Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach.
How long the art lasts depends on nature. Traffic takes its toll when the streets reopen--tires act like big erasers.
