Dear Family,
Thanks alot for the letter Tuesday. I got it after I got back from Portland. These last two days have been really something.
We met a woman on the bus, that did not have anyplace to stay Tuesday night so we told her she could come and stay a night at George Fox. She was some sort of a (Mixed up) Christian Missionary. It is all very confusing. Anyway, she came with us and when we got here and had settled down we found out she definitely had a mental problem. The dorm mother threw a fit of us bringing her here in the first place, after she found out everything especially. She had Pam and I down in her room telling us we couldn't just bring in anyone. Mrs. Gregory told us to get her out of the dorm by ten o'clock Wednesday morning. Mrs. Gregory did not care what happened to her as long as she would be out of the dorm.
Well, we all decided we should try and contact someone that could take care of her or get her help. We called the chaplain and he tried to get someone to take her but couldn't or so he said. We also tried to get some of the ministers here in Newberg but every one of them found an excuse. During all of this calling the woman escaped and went over to the library . . . it was about eleven o'cock and we were suppose to be in Chapel or going . . . it was about quarter till eleven. I had to drag her out of the library almost by hand. She made a big scene in the library and then I got her in front of the dorm and she made an even bigger scene. To top it all off there was Mrs. Gregory. She started throwing a fit too.
Mrs. Gregory was nervous she thought the woman to be really violent and all that. She wasn't violent at all. (the woman - she was just having a fit.) The woman really had some big stories . . . one was that she had been to heaven . . . another one is her healing . . . you would not have believed it all. She (the mental one) had gone to school In Mac. (Which is short for McMinnville.) She knew a bunch of people there and yesterday at one o'clock we got her on the bus here in Newberg to go to Mac. I don't know about the woman at all . . . she was very sincere and all that but I know she had a definite mental problem. She just went crazy in the Library when I went in there and found her and then in front of the dorm it was really something. This school really has something to talk about for awhile.
Mrs. Gregory had us down in her room yesterday again and asked us what we thought of it all. I asked her what I thought about what. I have a feeling I am on that woman's black list.
I had two exams yesterday to top it all off. I sure did not have a chance to study for them. I also handed in my Civilization notebook yesterday. It was 71 pages of typed research. I should get an "A" on it. It was more like a book if you ask me.I am sure glad I had it all done before I went to Portland or it would not have gotten done yesterday.
My only class on Tuesday had been cancelled so we decided to go Portland Tuesday. It was all quite an experience. I bought me a dress for homecoming dinner, though not especially for the occasion. I just bought it on impulse. I mean I didn't go in there with the idea to buy a dress. It is really a pretty dress -- naturally. It is long . . . like down to the ankles. It is made out of kettle cloth and with swiss dot sleeves. The skirt part is patch work but not really patches. I will have to get a picture of me in it to send to you all. I really can't explain it. Pam paid for it since she had a checking account. I paid her already seven dollars but haven't gotten down to the bank yet to pay her the rest. I will be needing some money before Spring Vacation for sure. I am planning on filling out my income tax form tomorrow. Do you think it might get back before Spring Vaation? I mean the you know what if I get it sent in tomorrow? I heard on the radio yesteray that it would take app. six weeks to get back the money if you send them in now. Time will tell.
I could not get over all the places that were robbed in New Vienna. Some body or alot of people must have been busy that night. Do they know anything yet??
I got back my mid-term yesterday from my English teacher. I did not make it to class so I went to see her after the Civ class. I got one of the two "B"'s. So that isn't too bad. (No A's.)
I think I'll go over and see if I got any mail today since it all should be out by now. I just got back and I had a valentine from Aunt Mary and one of her carbon copies page. I don't think the mail is all out yet.
I suppose you all heard about the earth quake or whatever it is called that they are having (bad) down near Los Angeles. It has alot of kids here all upset since they lived down in that area. They haven't been able to call down there or anything yet. We are sure having alot about it on the news and everything.
Oh . . . about the letter from David LeShana. [re: the fake letter Roberta & her friends mailed to their parents about how they were outstanding students] Cindie had a Congratulatory telegram from her parents the other night over the phone and then they (Western Union) sent it to her in the mail. She was sure excited -- she had never gotten a telegram before. That was, she was excited until they read it to her over the phone. We really didn't think anyone would believe it. Pam's mother knew about it before she got it. Pam told her Mom when she called her Saturday and that was before her Mom had gotten it in the mail.
How is the weather in Ohio??? Yesterday it was up to 52 degrees here. Just thought I would tell you. I have gotten all my papers sent in to the right places about me going to UC next year. I am sorta excited about going . . . I think I would really like the Police Science Program. I just hope I can be accepted now. In a couple of days you might call EC or have Serena go in and see if they have sent my transcript in yet. They are not known for being speedy.
There are four boys from George Fox that are driving to Ohio over Spring Vacation. They have asked me to go with them if I wanted to. But, counting traveling time I would not be able to spend any time at all in Ohio so I think I will go down to Southern California while I am out here on the West coast. Cindie got the student directory out the other night and wrote down every student's name from any place near her and she is asking them how they are getting home. We are trying to find a way down by car.
In Aunt Mary's letter today she said that Cris had been chosen to go to the AF Academy from Florida State U., but he has another physical to take and then he is in the running with 29 others throughout the United States. I am not too clear about it at all.
By the way, John, Mary Virginia and Serena, my address is still the same. You all are slacking on the job . . .
George Fox sure got alot of free advertising from the chairs missing. I imagine that made them happy.
I bought myself alot of different kinds of tea in Portland Tuesday. Pam had a big glass like thing that we can boil water in and it makes about three cups or so. We heave had several good mixtures. We don't believe in trying them plain.
I have told the business office twice already about your address being in New Vienna. This school is run with real organization (not).
By the first of March I will need the pills sent to me. Do you need the labels that are in the pill containers now? Don't get the nerve pills refilled right now. I have got plenty of them to last me. I just need the other two refilled.
Well, it is about lunch time and I have some odds and ends I want to get done before lunch so I better be going. Hope to hear from you all soon and hope that all are fine and all that.
OH!!! I guess I told you all there is a girl here by the name of Hinshaw. I asked her about Hinshaw at WilmingtonCollege. That is her second cousin or something. She also told me her parents had gone to Barnesville. She is a real Quaker.
Well, better go . . . .
Love,
Bert
