1980 Catherine's Letter -Feb.26

2-26-80

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  We got your postcard from New York on Sat. and the one you mailed from Ohio yesterday.  Thanks.

We made an offer on the house of $46,000.  Thanks for your advice, Dad.  I checked the deeds at the court house and we found out that the previous owner paid $43,500 in July of '78 but the bank transferred these people and paid them $49,833 in Sept. '79.  It therefore seems unlikely that they will accept our offer but we'll see.  They have 10 days to respond.  The interest rate now is 13½% and we figure we can't afford to pay more than 46.  We said we would still put 12,000 down and finance the other 34 for 25 years.  The other thing we wanted to discuss with you is that we probably wouldn't be able to start paying you back for about 3 years.  Would that be a problem?

We finished putting the first coat of stain on our new bookcase last night.  It looks real nice.  We didn't buy enough to put two coats on (we thought we did but it didn't turn out that way.  So we will buy another can of stain when we got back to Portland for Gerry's next Dr. appt. on March 13th.  He has to be checked out by the M.D. again for the satisfaction of the Workmen's Comp. people.  He also has an appt. with his Dr. in Bend next Tuesday morning.  He seems to be coming along excellently.  We played golf on Saturday for the first time this year and not only did it not hurt him but he did pretty well.  That made him feel good.

We have a busy week this week.  Tonight we are going over to the house of a guy who works at the Co-op.  They just moved here in December from California and they have a 3 month old daughter.  Tomorrow night is the monthly birthday dinner at the Elks followed by the new member indoctrination which we need to go to because Gerry is sponsoring a new member this month.  Thursday night Gerry and Bob (the new member) have to go to the initiation at the Elks and Emily (his wife) and I will probably do something.  These are real good friends of ours that we have gone hiking with and played golf with.  They only live a block away.

We are due to have our monthly inspection of the apartments again soon.  It has rained the past few days so I haven't been able to do much outside but hopefully it will clear up tomorrow.  We really haven't had any excessive rainfall like they have had in southern California and Phoenix.  We had our flood last year.

While I was at the Court House yesterday I picked up an application for a job in the County Clerk's office.  They require a typing test which I'm sure would be no problem as I get plenty of practice typing.  If we do buy a house I'd like to have a job as soon as possible so we could make the transfer from the apartments to the house.  We are required to give 30 day notice if we leave the apts. but I figure I could be working at another job during at least part of that 30 days.  We'll see how it all turns out.  The interest rates are the most discouraging aspect of the whole thing.

Love,
Catherine
Gerry &
Wendy
