January 2, 1989
Dear Family:
Right now we are taking down the Christmas things around the house, with a resolution to put them away in such a manner that it will be easier to locate such and such things fifty weeks from now, or in 1990 with Arizona in mind for the next Christmas season.
Speaking of 1990, Dad bought a new "diary book" for 1990 (8x14x1.5) at half price as the store had it rather than the 1989. Since the 4x6 book has lasted for 50 years he has a good supply of space. With hind sight wish I had written more notes about our initial trip to California in 1936.
Yesterday we had lunch with the Homer Thompsons (they left here as our pastors four years ago) in Maysville, Ky. He is going to take early disability this June and retire to the farm where Roma grew up, near Jackson, Ohio. [Homer 1926-2001, Roma 1930-?]
Last Tuesday afternoon we went to East Gate Mall in Cincinnati and had dinner at a nice restaurant with the Sankers. This restaurant has a changing display of paintings by different artists one of whom was Dr. Hale's son.
We had a lot of nice comments about M.V.'s singing at our Church on Christmas Day. Her recital date of October 8th will be before we know it (the old refrain). It sounds closer to say the graduation from Asbury will be this year.
Mary Virginia was here briefly (8:30 PM Sat til 7:45 Sunday AM) as she was singing at a church way north of Dayton. She may stop briefly coming or going to a wedding in Michigan where she is to sing again. Diane is her accompanist & will visit her parents so the time is iffy. Plus she is to be in Louisville Sunday evening for a concert. She is a BUSY person.
The Kings are busy this past weekend & today as Sid's daughter Judy and her husband flew out to Phoenix to see Notre Dame play West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl – good things I wasn't there to root for WVU but you know what an avid fan I am. I heard from several friends so happy that WV was doing so well in football this year.
I hate to see Christmas vacation end for it has been relaxing to have the time off without other activities and good to see the family and friends we haven't seen for some time. We plan to get together with the Goodings this coming Sunday though found there is a very important district church meeting that same day. Dad is head of the Pastor-Parish Relations and no doubt should attend.
[Love, etc. . . .]
