1973 Catherine's letter -Oct.23

More of the bright green stationary in this 1973 letter from Maine. Transcription follows.

Tues. Evening
Oct. 23, 1973
Dear Mom, Dad, John & Mary,

Hi! Well I got letters today from Roberta, Serena & Mary. Tell Mary I'll answer her letter tomorrow. We've had some excellent weather here lately. It rained Saturday but has been sunny (altho cool) since.

The dress arrived in plenty of time & all it needed was presses.  We went to a social hour at the St. Cyr's house before there was a dance.  There were about 6 couples there – four of which we didn't know so we got acquainted with them.  Then we went to the dance (150 couples) and there were a few people we knew.  The band was OK except we're no good at that kind of dancing.

We're watching "The President's Plane is Missing" on TV right now.  I read the book several years ago.  I don't remember too much except the ending.

Tell John good luck with his driving.  I have to take a drivers test on Oct. 31.  Written & driving and parking.  I don't think I've parallel parked since I took my first test 8 years ago. I'm going to practice this weekend.

Happy Birthday, Dad.  I had planned to send you something but I don't have it together yet.  Sorry.  Hope you have a good day though.  No snow I hope.  It's been in the 20's here but no white stuff yet.  I'm hoping we'll have a big wind to blow all our leaves away so we won't have to rake them.

Another mess we have around here is the floor in the living room which is horrible.   The vacuum sweeper isn't working properly I keep fooling with it, but to no avail yet.

You hadn't mentioned anything about the Lynd's moving.  Who is coming?  I went to a meeting last night. Something like Christian Council of Business and Professional Women.  Decided that I didn't want to join.  The meetings are held about 15-20 miles away & it costs $5.00/month (for the dinner mostly).

Well, paper & time are running out and I'm tired.

Love, Catherine & X

1973 Roberta's letter -Oct.18

October 18, 1973

Dear Family,

Hi!  Got your long and newsy letter today . . . . thanks.  I really should have the carbon copy system like Aunt Mary to write everyone.  Today I also heard from Catherine and X, and Serena.  So I really feel like I'm up on all the family!!!

I helped tonight at the Weight Watchers meeting at Richard's.  (store out of the mall)  They are just getting classes going out there.  There were three of us us who had to give a little talk.  I had lost more weight than the other two who talked.  It was all quite exciting.

Oh, first off . . . . . . . . . . do bring the Aralon tablets with yo to Atlanta.  The Hortons would really appreciate them.

We got our psychology tests back Wednesday . . . was it just yesterday!!!!  Anyway, I got a "C", but was only one point away from a "B", so didn't do so bad after all.  I felt much better after I got the test grade back.  I would hate to flunk out of F.A.U. my first quarter. (ha)

Before too long we have to be registering for Winter quarter.  You always have to be thinking way ahead of time it seems.  I'm hoping that it will work out for me to take the same classes or at least at the same time, as some of the girls I've met from West Palm Beach that also go down there.  It would be nice as far as driving back and fourth.

Cris called the other night and I spoke to him about where I should stay in Atlanta.  Then he told me that he will get things worked out so that I could stay in the dorm (girls) on campus, that Thursday night.  I haven't yet hear from Comm. Treatment Center, but I am still planning on going to Atlanta Thursday morning.

Yes, I got the checks . / . . . . . . now, did you get them back again?????

Did you all send the newspaper article about John to us???  Somehow we never saw it.  If you have any extras hanging around bring one down to Atlanta with you, ok???  I'm anxious to hear all the details about it..  Well, I'll see you all sometime Friday morning at the Biltimore (sp??) hotel.  I looked it up in the Mobile tour guide and it sounds like an all right place to me.  Noticed it's a 3 star outfit!!

See you –––

Love, Berta

John – are you going to bring your new suit to Atlanta??

1943 HH goes to college

A clipping from the October 1, 1943 Hillsboro Press-Gazette, shows Aunt Vertie  accompanied HH and his parents to Cleveland in the fall of 1943 though no purpose of the trip is disclosed.  Probably because it was on a need to know basis.  Transcription of Uible paragraph follows.

Aunt Vertie, as you may remember, was the (third) wife of Cecil's brother, Will Uible (1869-1942).  Verda May Burton's (1879-1966) first marriage was to Harry Quincy Barger (1871-1916) in 1899.  She married Uncle Will in 1920.  She was stepmother to F.R. (Frank Rutledge) Uible (1895-1974), the initials are incorrect in this article.  Frank holds the distinction of being the first of three Uibles to graduate from New Vienna High School.  Frank graduated 1913, Mary Uible Horton 1931 and HH in 1943.

1983 Family Letter - Oct.17

Very big news from Roberta leads off this family letter. Transcription follows.

Monday morning -
October 17, 1983
Dearest Family -

This has been quite an eventful week with the BIG news coming to us Wednesday when Roberta called about her approaching marriage to Sis King.  We had met him briefly several years ago, thought he was very nice but didn't realize then what an important place he might have in the future.  We might have been a littler more observant.  But we do feel confident that they have carefully and prayerfully considered all the various pros and cons of such a big decision.

Roberta wanted to tell Grandma herself in a letter so it has been hard to keep such momentous news as G'ma won't get the letter until at the earliest today.  We have dropped a number of little hints so it won't come as a COMPLETE shock to her.

It is our hope that we can all get together in Phoenix at that Time.  John and X seem to be the biggest IF.  They would like to come but Dec. 30th is a bad time to ask the bank for a vacation for more than just the weekend.  Luckily G'ma and the Morgans and Serena had already begun to make plans for that time not knowing then how important it would be.  Serena wasn't sure that the woman she has been replacing would be back but thinks she will be able to get the time off if not.  Hopefully she will get things worked out.  The Hortons are talking about coming but don't know any of their plans as we have only heard of them through Roberta.  (That is Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill.)  I have a feeling that Joe might try to come as he gets back to New York this week and it could be possible.

We have talked to most of you - Serena called Wed. night and we talked to Gerry and Wendy (Catherine had just left the house so missed her).  Gerry was busy painting the outside of the house but took time to chat about their plans.  Had supper with X and John Tuesday evening at their home and Mary Virginia was over on Thursday for her student teaching day.  She has been down to the Co. Commissioner's Office several times to get data on a schoolproject whe [sic] is working on.

Had a good trip to the Boston area a week ago . . . we rented a car at the Boston airport, had dinner with a friend we had met on the Elderhostel trip on Sat. evening in New Hampshire, and then Sunday we drove thru Sanford on our way to Laconia and seeing Harriette Ballantyne and her two sons and their families.  Roger has done a lot of work on the family tree and has a beautiful scrap book which we have on loan fromhim. [sic]

This past weekend has been a whirlwind for we went to Wright State Univ. on Saturday for a library meeting and yesterday to Lebanon UMC for a "Day on the District" which concluded with an address by the Bishop.  There was a good turnout of people there.  This was Bishop Loder last visit to the District as the bishop as he steps down next spring.  They gave him a number of gag gits [sic] one being presented by Stan Fawley to represent the Wilm Clinton Co. cluster.

Roger Ballantyne is going with a girl formerly from Sanford.  She has two children by a former marriage.  Don't think Harriette is too happy about her - she's 29 and Roger is 40.  Interesting to talk to both the boys and enjoyed dinner fixed by Bob's wife, Pat.  Except for wiring and plymbing [sic], they did the inside of the house themselves and looks real good.

[Love, etc.]

1973 Roberta's Letter -Oct.16

The letters from Roberta arrive with regularity despite her busy exclamation mark filled life. Transcription follows.

October 16, 1973

Dear Family,

Thought I would write a short letter and send this check on it's way back to Ohio!!!  As I said before, my U.C. insurance really came through for me!!!

We arex all keeping pretty busy down here.  Last night Aunt Mary had some sort of Church meeting here.  I got home from school just in time for the refreshments. (ho, hum)  They had punch with sherbert [sic] in it, also brownies and different kinds of cookies.  I ate my usual pudding and had two plums.  I'll sure be glad when the orange and grapefruit season starts.

Went to W.W. this morning.  I'm now on their "pay-roll" . . . . I thought I would never see the day when I would be on W.W pay-roll!!!!  Anyway, I lot another half of pound.  At this rate I should lose the 2½ pounds I still have left to lose in about five weeks!!!   Just in time for Thanksgiving!!!!!

School is going all-right.  I thought we were going to get off next Monday for Veteran's Day (we were originally supposed too) But now they have changed our little holiday to Nov 14th instead.  The worst thing was that I had told them at work that I could work that Monday and now I have to change that.  We are to have a midterm in my Sociology class next Wednesday so think that I better attend class on Monday.

I have told them at work that I won't be able to work next Thursday through Sunday.  As plans are now I think I am going to fly to Atlanta on Thursday morning.  I haven't really thought too much on where I should stay that evening.  Thursday at work I'll have to look in the travel books and figure something out.

I've been working on my criminal justice paper all afternoon.  I have great hopes of getting it done and out of the way by the first or second week in November.  It only (!) has to be 20 pages this time . . . . . mainly because we are also having class this term.

Will write more later in the week –

Hope all of you all are fine – anxious to see you in Atlanta next week end.

Love, Berta

1953 Jean's letter to her mother - Oct.14

Jean's Oct. 1953 letter to her mother, makes me wonder about the letters and postcards her mother sent to her. Were they not saved? Or have I not found them yet? About time to dig through the boxes that aren't totally sorted yet.... Scalloped potatoes were one of Mother's specialties.  Transcription follows.

Wednesday

Oct. 14, 1953
Dearest Mother,

Haven't heard from you since your two postal cards a week ago yesterday.  Hope everything is alright with you.

Harold came home Saturday from Detroit with quite a surprise.  We have been trying to get Ruth Krickbaum to come down for a long time & so he called her when coming thru Toledo & she got ready in a few minutes & came.  She used to live with Jeanne & I in Cleveland & made my wedding dress.  Do you remember her?  She's teaching in Maumee & living in Bowling Green.  She stayed til 5:00 Sunday evening – got a bus in front of our house – one change in Dayton & would get off in front of her house 11:50 in Bowling Green.

Harold & I went to a pot luck supper Sunday night in honor of Arlene & Bob Chesnut who are moving to Florida.  It was a combination farewell dinner & class meeting.

Monday Harold left for Chicago & Minneapolis & is due back next Tuesday.

Tomorrow night the Womans Club is having a noted naturalist & lecturer speak & show his big colored film on birds & wildlife at the school.  I plan to take Catherine & hope she enjoys it.  Mrs. Pierce is going to stay with Roberta.  [Mrs. Pierce lived in the corner apartment and had a big button collection which Roberta loved.]

This afternoon was Womans Club & Mother Uible stayed with the girls.  I was invited to substitute again at the usual bridge club but renegged [sic] as Harold isn't here & I couldn't get a baby sitter to stay til 2 or 3AM & didn't want to ask anyone to stay allnight.  It's not worth that many lost hours sleep.

Had a short letter from Catherine Smith Foster which I am enclosing.  Her note about her suggestion to her father sounds natural & like her old ways.  Do hope her father isn't seriously ill.

Am anxious to hear from you & would be very glad to meet you anyplace if you'd pack a few things & come down for a week or so.

The WSCS is serving a lunch Sat – Oct. 24 when three's a big all day sale in the country.  Then the next Wednesday our Society is being host to _?_ Churches in the district & will have to serve dinner to them.  Anywhere between 100&200 people.  I'm in charge of scalloped potatoes.  That same night the Home & School League is having a Halloween Carnival at the School – October is certainly a busy month.

All our very best love,
Harold, Jean, Catherine and Roberta

P.S.  Would appreciate Catherine's [Foster] letter back when you're thru with it.  I haven't answered it yet.

1973 Catherine to MV letter -Oct.14

Some bright stationary here in this letter to MV which is transcribed below.  Wonder if all those questions were answered in MV's next letter or if they were a deterrent to writing back??

Oct. 14, 1973
Dear Mary,

Hi! Your letter of Oct. 11 was here waiting when we got home yesterday. That was a quick reply. I wish everybody I write to would answer that quick.

We had a good time camping.  We camped on the shore of Flagstaff Lake near the town of Stratton.  It is about 130 miles from Sanford.  It got very cool, especially at night, but it didn't rain.  Kuman bit a porcupine and got her mouth and tongue full of hundreds of quills.  We had to take her to the bet.  He gave her a shot to put her to sleep and then pulled them out.  She was like a wild dog before we got to the vets.  It took 3 of us just to hold on to her.

X went hunting and got quite a few grouse.  They taste alot like chicken.  I went swimming one day in order to take a bath and wash my hair.  The water was ice cold.

I hope your report card is good.  What subjects do you get grades in?  Do you study any current events?  Like the Israeli War or the new vice-president?  What books do you read?  Do have to read certain books or do you have a choice?  What is your favorite book so far?

The package with the dress hasn't come yet.  Maybe it will come tomorrow.

I have to write some other letters now so I'll sign off.  Write again soon.

Love, Cathy

P.S.  You & John should have been here for breakfast.  We had several extra donuts.

1973 Roberta's letter Oct.12

Roberta is back to her typewriter. Transcription follows.

October12, 1973
Dear Family,

Hi! Thanks for your letter yesterday . . . . I knew I would hear from you as soon as I wrote you all a letter.

It's now ten thirty p.m., and would believe that I just got done [sic] with my supper???  I seem to be running late today . . . . . ha, ha.  I didn't have to start work till 11:40 so didn't eat my breakfast till almost ten oclock, then had my lunch about three, and then my supper when I got home from work.  I just had liver (already had it cooked), and a toss salad, some tea. Nothing much.  I've still got my big container of "pudding" to eat yet, it should be good.  I bought a bunch of new extracts, and this one is Chocolate and Pecan Nut mixed.

Thanks for Serena's address, she had sent me two letters, but never her address.  Now you all won't have to forward my letters to her.

I did write my letter to the people at the Community Treatment Center in Atlanta.  I'll let you know what I hear from them.  It would really be nice if I can go out there and visit.  It says in my information about the place that it is only a twenty minute (fourty cents) bus ride from downtown Atlanta.

Grandma, we got your letter this morning.  Thanks . . . . . I hope you are still planning on going down to Disney World sometime this winter.

My department at work won the prize of all the other departments of doing better than the figures for last year during the sale on Tuesday.  I think I wrote you about how busy we were!!!  We each won three dollars!!!!  And now we are running very close to first place for the grand prize.  We are doing about 190 trend over last year.  Oh, the grand prize is 100 dollars . . . to be divided by the tree of us . . . . . so we are really hoping our good luck stays with us.  The contest isn't over till this coming Monday.  Maybe tomorrow I'll buy my supply of birthday cards, etc for the year. (ha)

1973 Roberta's letter -Oct.10

Roberta finds time to write between classes – unfortunately she didn't carry her typewriter in her school bag.  Transcription follows.

October 10, 1973

Dear Family,

Hi!  I'm sitting here waiting for my sociology class to start so thought I would at least get a letter started.

Had my 1st psychology test this morning.  A girl from Hollywood – (FLA - not California!) who is in the class, and I met this morning at 8:00 in the library to review.  He had said in class – "NO DETAILS - just GENERAL ideals, etc."  Well – after the test we decided that his definitions of details & general ideas are sure different than ours!  That test was really hard – I'm going to have to sure do better on the next three if I expect to get a decent grade!!

I've been thinking about going to Atlanta on Thursday morning of the week-end of Oct. 26th.  There is a Gov't Community Treatment Center in Atlanta I would like to visit.  I'm going to write them a letter tonight about going on the 25th & visiting it & talk to them.  For my paper over the summer I wrote them and they sent me back a nice letter & lots of info.

This quarter for my criminal justice course I'm doing a paper on the employment problems of those released from prison.   know - or least think - that I would be able to get lots of good info from them. (again)

Also – I figure I might as well get my money's worth out of the trip to Atlanta.

I had good news at W.W. yesterday – I had lost 3½ pounds!!  That means I only have 3 more pounds to reach the goal that they have set for me.  I'd like to go under that – but time will tell!  I might be 3 months losing the 3 pounds!!

I only have 1 more training session for my job as clerk at W.W.  It makes me happy to think that I'm going to start getting some money back from them – after all that I've paid to them!!

I worked last night at Burdines – just 5:40 to 9:40, and WOW we were sure busy!  I've never seen the store so full of people.  We did 1800 dollars worth in my Dept. which is really good for our little ole' dept!  And would you believe only 280 some dollars in the cash register – everything else was charged!!

We had boxed Christmas Cards half price – also picture frames, some stationary, alot of puzzles & games marked down.  It was funny though the amount of 'regular' merch. we sold!

John – how is the driver?  It's too bad the V-dub isn't there for you to learn on!  Or maybe the old Chrysler – remember the 2 tone blue?

Cris called up the other day and I guess he won't be in Atlanta the week-end of the 26th – or at least he will be gone for part of the week-end.  I think he's going on some sort of Church Retreat that week-end.  It's too bad he'll be gone . . . .

It's now after supper – I have about fifteen minutes before my next – (and last class – thank goodness!)  It's a long day when you get down here at 8:00 in the morning!!  Usually I don't have to be here though till 10:00 or 10:30.

Wow - just heard the news about Agnew!  John - you should have mailed your letter – you might just have a job now.  [See Draft letter to Pres. Nixon written the previous month.]

Better close - hope to hear from you all soon.  – Dad – did I send you all the material you needed?

Love, Berta

Dear Grandma & Grandpa,    W/B/S [write back soon]

Hi!  How are you?  I am great.  Having a good time in Scotland!  I have a weeks vacation from school started yesterday.  I will be going to London on Nov. 12, for 2 days!  School is going well I am taking Higher English which is quite hard.  I am taking geography which my knowledge of the 50 states will probably not help because we're mostly doing Europe.  How are things in Ohio?  Do you think you might be able to come & visit me in Scotland?  I have been told that I'm getting an accent.  My reply to that was aye!  It takes quite a getting used to!  I have almost mastered the Scottish language.  I don't get this view from my window but Scotland is a very beautiful place.  I take a Double Decker bus to and from school.  Things are really different here but I'm quite used to most of it by now!  Gotta Run!  Love, Wendy Jean -- your favorite granddaughter in Scotland

1973 John: Outstanding Carrier Cincinnati Enquirer

On October 13, 1973, the Cincinnati Enquirer's salute of outstanding carriers included John, who is pictured below.  The part about John has been transcribed.  Amazingly the article does not mention (for space reasons?) the role and influence of John's sisters in training him to be an outstanding carrier.

1973 John as Outstanding Carrier for Cincinnati Enquirer

John Uible
New Vienna, Ohio
15 years old
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Uible

John started on his route in September 1964, is a Sophomore at East Clinton High, where he maintains an "A" average.  He is a member of the Band, French Club and and [sic] is Student School Librarian.  He was co-Editor of the school newspaper and is a regular on the Honor Roll.

John was an Eagle Scout at the age of 14 and had accumulated 47 merit badges.  He received the "God and Country" and "Gold Quill" awards and was senior Patrol Leader.  He also received the Outstanding Leadership scholarship.   At the present time he is conducting an independent study under the guidance of Mr. Greer, East Clinton County Superintendent, exploring the history of political parties.

1983 Catherine as Blood Donor - Oct 6

Catherine made the local newspaper because of donating blood.  Hopes were dashed for setting any kind of blood donation lifetime record in 1988 when the Red Cross decided she might be a carrier of malaria.  Further tests showed this not to be the case, but once the Red Cross decides you are a "problem" donor, no further donations are allowed.  The recipient wants blood without any possible taint of a health issue.

The portion about "Cathy" Morgan is transcribed below.

Blood donors share 'giving' spirit

Cathy Morgan, Jefferson County Librarian has been donating for 16 years since she was a student at Kalamazoo College.  She said the 'good refreshments sere very important to college students."  She added that her father had always donated.  She "feels donating is very important, it doesn't cost anything , you can help someone else, plus you get a free medical checkup!"

1973 Roberta's letter - Oct 5

Roberta continues using her pretty yellow stationary with tiny white polka dots in October 1973; John get's his driver's permit; and Joe's siblings prepare to visit him in Africa.  Transcription follows.

October 5, 1973

Dear Family,

Hi . . . . . was good to talk to all of you last night.  Glad you waited to call back so that I could talk to Grandma too.  Also Aunt Mary came in the house in time to talk to you all.

The big news here is the Africa trip this Christmas for Rob, Cris and Mares.  Rob went today and got his first shots.  He went yesterday and applied for his passport so progress is really being made.

The Hortons just got in from the football game.  The team lost . . . . . but just by one point this time.

We also got your letter yesterday.  How about some more details about the Lynds having to move?  It's just a shame that Rev. Lynd has been so sick.

Business has slowed down alot at work.  Everyone seems to know that the big sale is going to be starting so they must be waiting.  I bought a pants suit tonight . . . . it was already marked down . . . . . . . from 35 dollars to nineteen then I got 25% off nineteen so I really got it pretty reasonable.  Oh, and guess what size it is . . . . . . size 12!!!  I was shocked!!!!

I didn't do as bad as Doris, but I did somehow gain a half of pound this last week.  And I haven't touched the ham and other so called goodies that we are allowed to eat now!!  I went out this morning for the second part of my being trained for clerk.  I will just be working on Tuesdays . . . . . from nine o'clock till eleven thirty.  That's the day I usually went to W.W. but now I will just have to be there a little earlier and stay till eleven thirty.  I almost feel like a doctor weighing people in!!  The excuses people give are too much . . . . . cough syrup, vitamins, you name it!!!

John, glad you passed the driver's permit test, but I really don't understand how you did it without my helping you!!!

It's late and I've got some reading in psychology I ought to do yet . . . . big test coming up this Wednesday . . . . . . . .

Love, Berta

1973 Joe's letter - Oct 4

Joe sends a letter to his Uible aunt, uncle & cousins in 1973.  Please excuse any mistakes in the transcription which follows.

4 October 1973

Dakar, Liberté IV

Dear Uibles,

Thank you kindly for your letter with the clipping about Mopti, Mali.  I must confess I haven't excelled in letter writing this year.  Somehow I can never find a pen that works.

The "collège" put in a hot water heater for me so no more cold showers.  My meager house has turned into a Hotel.  I also bought a new motorcycle, a baby Peugeot.  It's a nicer bike than the last one.  I paid 59,000 CFA [Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, "Central Bank of the West African States"] for the new one and sold the old to a Malian for 12,000 CFA.

I've been out to Gorie several times this past month and I'm going out today for a picnic.  There's a Senegalese painter there now who has become internationally famous, Souley Keïta.  A friend of mine bought 3 of his watercolors for 25,000 CFA $125.00!  [The inclusion of this last sentence, tells us that the exchange rate was about 100 CFA = 50¢, if my math is correct.]

School begins on the 15.  I'll be teaching 4é again.  Glad that date's coming soon.

Well, hope you're all well.  Say hello to Grandma for me.  Love and Affection want you to know they say hello. – Joe

Peggy's Cove Light, Nova Scotia postcard - mailed 1993
1993 Nova Scotia postcard - Oct. 1
[postmarked 1 Oct 1993]
Had dinner right near here and found Wells Bubble Joy in the gift shop – no bargain but 8 oz. for 3.95.

Whole trip has been fantastic – scenery, food, B&B's, weather, & group that we're with.

Has been sunny every day but one – and sleet & hail but didn't last long.

Look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Much love, Dad & Mother

1983 Catherine's letter - Oct. 2

Wendy's 6th birthday celebration, library and home maintenance issues are highlights of this Oct. 1983 letter. Transcription follows.

 October 2, 1983

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  Well, we all survived Wendy's birthday.  We didn't go to Kah-hee-ta after all.  We found out a few days before that it was closed for some major repair work which is expected to be completed by the end of this month.  We thought then we might go to Redmond to swim but when we called there to inquire about the hours fund out they were closed for about 1- days for special cleaning.  so, we went bowling instead.  Wendy was disappointed not to go swimming but she and her friend Darci had a good time bowling and decided it was a pretty fun thing to do.

We had some of Wendy's friends and Oma & Millard over for cake and ice cream on Saturday afternoon.  The last two years we have had her party at the Grizzly Bear (now Pietro's) [Pizza] and I think we will o back there next year.  It requires more advance planning but not nearly as much work cleaning up, etc.

Wendy liked the puzzle, the bookmark, and the paper with her name on it.  Thanks.  The stickers & book from Mary Virginia were also nice.  She went shopping yesterday to spend the money she got for her birthday.  She had $20.50 so she bought a "Herself the Elf" for $7.99 and a "Angel Face Barbie" for $12.49.  She was very pleased with her purchases.  We spent about an hour and visited three stores before she made her decision.

This proposal on the other side of this paper to move the library is very unlikely to happen but it did draw some attention to the library and point out that the library is considering options to enlarge.  This committee has since decided that they are only going to decide about the court house floor and leave these other problems to another committee which will be appointed later.  [The library moved to a new building about 8 years later.]

We have gotten about three sides of the house painted and are now waiting for the rest of the paint to arrive.  It was backordered from Sears but they were supposed to ship it Sept. 28 so we should get it soon hopefully.  Not much fun, but it looks alot better after being painted.  We also bought paint for the trim but haven't started on that yet.  There is alot of that in the carport area.

Had to pull the tomato plants but have about a bushel left to eat – very prolific plants this year.

Love, Catherine, Gerry & Wendy.

1973-74 MV's 4th Grade Class Picture

Not sure if the missing person in this picture was removed because MV wanted them eliminated from the picture or specially honored.  Based on previous discussions on whether there were any teachers at New Vienna who had all five of the Uible children, I don't think the answer was Mrs. Hilderbrant, but at least Catherine and Mary Virginia had her for 4th grade.

The highlight of 4th grade for me was penmanship, when we got to use fountain pens.  Though the ink jars and filling of the pen reservoir was exciting, the then-recent use of ink cartridges made for much easier use of the pen and allowed for the exchange of one ink color cartridge for another color much easier.  I still have a fascination for pens and varied ink colors.

MV's (second row from top, first from left) 4th Grade Class, Mrs. Hildebrant, teacher.
