"People were friendly and willing to help and this strengthened my attitude toward the United States and people in general," said Catherine Uible of New Vienna, who has returned from a four-weeks hosteling trip through the New England states.
She was one of 10 girls and a trained American Youth Hostel Inc. leader, who traveled some 600 miles by bicycle. Girls ranged from ages 18 to 20 and one came from as far as California to join the group.
The trip was not made entirely by bicycle. From the beginning, July 19, Catherine went by plane to Springfield, Mass. Other trips were made by train from Salem to Boston, Mass., and by bus from Boston to Cape Cod. The last two weeks were spent traveling near the ocean. "When the group became tired they went for a swim," Catherine says. They also visited museums and antique shops.
At night they stayed in camp areas, youth hostels or a hotel. Arrangements were made for mail stops about once a week and as the girls passed through the various places there was usually a letter from home.
A flat tire – on her bike – was the only incident along the way. The trip ended at Boston.
Catherine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Uible of New Vienna. She says she has always enjoyed riding a bicycle and was a carrier of the News-Journal for two years in the village.
