1973 Roberta's letter -Nov.13

Roberta uses some fancier stationery. Transcription follows.

November 13, 1973
Dear Family,

Hi! I've really been living the good life the last couple of days. Yesterday didn't have school due to the holiday, and today didn't have to go to work or school. So, I've been able to get quite alot of work done on my paper for criminal justice which is due the 28th of this month. I'm hoping for at least a "B" out of the course. I sure hope the prof. doesn't dissappoint [sic] me!!!!

I went to Weight Watchers this morning and sure had good news . . . . . . I lost two pounds last week.  I just don't know what the next couple of weeks will bring as I lost 1 and a half pounds last week and two pounds this week.  I'm now two pounds under the goal that they set for me.  I am trying to lose five more pounds though.

I got the first of the maintenance sheets today.  It allows you to have a muffin, or bagel, or corn bread once a week.  (nothing was said about donuts . . . . . ha)  Also each day you can have an extra slice of brad, or one ounce of crackers, or one ounce of cereal.  But, I'm going to just stay on the program for a couple more weeks and try to lose five more pounds.

I have sent (or rather had sent) three packages home for Christmas.  Please don't open them up till Christmas, unless you don't want to have anything to open up from me come Christmas.

I also got my first paycheck from W.W. yesterday for the month of October . . . . . . thirty five dollars.  I was quite pleased with it!!!  I have figured up that in 30 weeks I have given them almost 100.00 dollars, but at this rate it won't take me long to get that amount back from them.

This is stationary from work, some that the company made a mistake on in the printing.  At first I just used it for scrap paper but now as you can see I'm using it for stationary.

Uncle Bill's brother and sister-in-law made it down to the sunshine state over the week-end.  We went out to see them last night and they were telling me about how cold it had been in OHIO.  I got goose bumps all over me just talking about it.

I invited Mrs. McGrew to ride down to Boca with me this Friday when I have to register. I don't have to be there until one o'clock so we are planning on leaving here around 11:30 and eating at Red Lobster.  It won't take me long to register as long as none of the classes I want have been filled.  By the way we are driving down . . . . not riding the bikes down . . . . . . . ha.  But, we did get along fine when we rode to Lantana and ate.

John, when do you take the SSAT (that doesn't look right) test???

Today after W.W. I went to Burdine's and did some shopping for Aunt Mary and myself.  Bought Joe a sweather [sic], a vest, and some other things.  I bought some odds and ends Christmas shopping.  (typing paper and small things like that.)  Like I said before we can get 25% off on anything except electrics . . . . . and diamonds until this Thursday.

Well, I better go.  I'll probably hear from you all tomorrow, since I wrote tonight.

Love, Berta

P.S.  I need stamps!

I've given up on getting the Toyota.  I went to see Mrs. Exline on Friday and she was talking about 12,000 dollars.  No . . . . I mean 1,200 hundred dollars.  She said how she had traded her car in and how her brother-in-law gave her a special deal.

Also I read in the paper about the prices of a 1965 Buick and I got sick.  The Buick is to good of a car to simply give away like that.  (three hundred dollars)  Well, it was a good idea . . . . . thought.  Have you sold the blue car yet?

1963 Serena - Duty Makes (artwork)

This was mistakenly filed with the Thanksgiving items, but looking at the picture more closely, it would seem likely to have been done at Easter time.

Nov. 5, 1993 Friday
Hi!  We're at the Beauty Shop getting our hair cut.  I'm done so now it's Gerry's turn.  Then we'll go out to brunch before heading to the golf course.  It's cold here (relatively) in the mornings now.  We haven't turned the heat on yet but probably will in the next few days.  I'm enjoying the granola and still have a little dried fruit yet.  Thanks for all!  How was the weekend with the younger Uibles and baby Crowson?  We'll be looking forward to seeing everybody in Colorado!  Time's up!  I'll talk to you soon.  Love, Catherine & Gerry

1973 MV cooks -Nov.5

A vintage look at the kitchen in the (former) Uible kitchen.  MV is appropriately dressed in her apron and appears to be studiously reading the menu.  Would they have been chocolate chip?

1973 Roberta's Letters -Nov.7

Roberta again gets double duty from the then 12¢ first class postage, by including a letter to Grandma with a letter to the family. Transcriptions follow.

November 7, 1973
Dear Grandma,

Hi!  I just mailed a letter to you from Aunt Mary so I hope I won't be repeating too much!

I'm now down at school - waiting for my 1st class to start.  After today I don't have any classes for a week because of Veteran's Day.  We only have 4 weeks of school left his quarter.  Which is really great – except when I think of all the work that I should do between now and then!!

Sometimes I wish I wasn't so "spoiled" as far as grades go - I know I'm not going to do as well this quarter as I've done at U.C. which kinda upsets me!

Last Friday b=night Mrs. Exline (a woman I've met through Weight Watcher - but she is also a friend of the Hortons) and I went out to Sweden House to eat.  It's a smorgsbord (sp?) in North Palm Beach.  You pay $3.95 (that hurt!) but then you could eat ALL you wanted!  Well - I didn't break my diet - but I really got my money's worth!  The night we went they had shrimp - the kind you have to peel.  Also crab-meat - still in the shells.  OH - was it good!  There were also lots of other kinds of meat - but I just ate the shrimp & crab.  (lots of both)  Also there were lots of different types of raw and cooked vegetables.  We both left really full!

I went yesterday morning to see Aunt Sara.  She's about the same - had been reading out in the front yard when I got there.

I'm not sure if I had told you before, but during the summer I bought a half gallon of Tuna Fish (f pounds and 6oz.) I think.  I opened it up on Sudan and got out my food scales and plastic bags and now (or rather did) have 22 bags of tuna - each weighing 3 ounces.  So now I've got my tuna fish lunches made up for awhile!! I'm only allowed it twice a week . . . . .

Mrs. McGrew and I are to go bike riding this Friday.  We're planning on leaving about 11:30 in the morning and have lunch down in Lantana.  (going there my means of the back roads)

Better close –

Love, Berta

Dear Family,

Hi!  Was nice talking to all of you this morning though I wasn't quite wide awake 100%!!

We got our psychology tests back today – I got my usual - a high C.  I just can't seem to make it into that B bracket!

I was quite happy about finally reaching "goal" for W.W!!  I still find it amazing that I can eat so much & lose weight!!  Starting next week I'll go on maintenance.  Down here they (or maybe I should say WE) make you go through your 8 weeks of maintenance before you get your pin.  (Like what Doris got while I was home!)

Last night when I talked I told about how I went in Ferrell's Ice Cream place w/my brown paper bay w/my diet pop and oranges in it & then ordered a glass of ice.  I think some of them found that hard to believe.  There are 12 new W.W. classes opening up w/in the next two weeks.  Instead of having a set lecturer & clerk they are trying to set up a team of three to run things.  It really is going to be a neat deal.

My trouble is that I hate to drop one day at Burdine's.  Which I should do if I'm going to be w/ W.W. more than once a week.  I'd much rather drop a day of school - but that's not hardly possible!

Speaking of jobs - I just "turned down" a good high-paying job yesterday.  Got a telephone call from WPB (city of) about being a clerk/typist.  Gong back to the Civil Service test I took last March!  If I wanted to go to work full time it would never be that – it would either be Burdine's or W.W!!

About "the car" - since I wasn't wide awake this A.M. –– Mrs. Exline just bought it about 6 to 8 weeks ago - she paid $800.00 then for it - from her brother-in-law.  When she bought it she didn't know that she was going to be remarried.

It's a 1970 station wagon - back seat goes down.  I did drive it to North Palm Beach & back and it does really drive nice.

When she bought it - it had just been painted; also new tires.  It just has a radio - no air conditioning, tape player (HA!), etc.

I'll keep you all posted on my efforts to sell the Buick.

I didn't mention anything to Grandma about it - so do what you wish about telling her.

Next week we pre-register for Winter Quarter.  Hopefully - I'll be taking 14 hours again.  One sociology course, one criminal justice course - and get this – a political science course!  I figure I might as well be brave and at least give it a try. (as for the political science course.)

My schedule will be much better than I have now.  Mondays & Wednesdays will have it again –– 11:30-1:20 Pol Science (M&W); 2:30-4:50 Social Psychology (M&W); 5:30-9:50 Correctional procedures (Wed. only).

On Wednesdays I'll have the same schedule as Nancy - a girl in my Deviance class - so we are planning on taking turns driving.  She lives in West Palm Beach.

I've got some Disney World tickets ready to mail to the Sankers.

Everything at work is really getting exciting.  We're getting in so much new merchandise (sp?) we hardly know where to put it.  Then on top of that we are so busy 2/customers we have very little time to do any "stock work" at all!

I'm doing most of my C. (+otherwise) shopping at Burdine's now through next Thursday; as we get 25% off on everything till then (except on major electrics and furniture)  If you have any special requests – let me know now!  It's really a good deal on fair trade items – books, stationery, etc.  Tomorrow I'm going to check out the bathing suits!!

Now Thursday morning - got to hurry & get this in the mail.  Didn't have a phone call this morning to get Aunt Mary & I up this morning – HA!

Don't have to be at work till 11:40!

Love, Berta

Progress Report

Wendy Morgan     Kindergarten     November 4, 1983

Classroom Teacher: Mrs. Gray
Working on Fine Motor Skills  Following oral directions

How student is progressing:  Wendy has made some good gains since began our program, which thus far has focused on improving writing skills, eye-hand coordination and cutting out exercises.  At first, Wendy needed a lot of help forming letters, but now much less "hands on" manipulation is required; verbal directions on where to begin certain letters and form them correctly is all that is necessary now.  Our next big goal is to get the letters on the line.  Her number writing skills are good.  We go through he Fairchild chart 2 or 3 times a week and she only needs to work on a few sounds (u, e, i, she misses consistently).  Her skill with scissors has improved also.  Next term we will work on accurately counting objects.

Comments and Recommendations:  Wendy still needs to work on staying on task.  She likes to talk and will often stop in the middle of a job, talk, and completely loose [sic] track of what she was doing.  We will continue to work on her listening skills, a prerequisite for better performance in following oral directions.

1983 Senior Village 2nd Birthday -Nov.4

Posted by Picasa
NEWS RELEASE

SENIOR VILLAGE CELEBRATES SECOND ANNIVERSARY

On November 4th [1983] a celebration will be held commemorating the second birthday of Senior Village.  It was two years ago to the day that the first house was opened.

The project was implemented to provide health and social services for low income older persons who no longer could live along in the community, but did not need institutional nursing home care.  The residents share the houses and support each other in a home-like atmosphere.

The pilot project has grown from seven houses to include nine residential homes with a capacity for serving 38 residents at any one time.  In the first 20 months of operation, a total of seventy low income older persons had been placed at Senior Village.  Twenty-nine percent came directly from nursing homes, thus reducing, by $127,252, the cost to county for 5,415 days if nursing home reimbursements.  Forty-one were deflected from a costlier level of care by residency at Senior Village.  Twelve residents were able to return to family or independent living.

The residents have ranged in age from 60 to 95 years. One 83 year old lady had previously resided in a nursing home for 21 months.  She suffered form arthritis and depression and was seldom out of bed.  She has been in residence at Senior Village now for 22 months.  She uses a can for ambulating to noon meals and outside activities.  She takes pride in taking care of her own room, does her own laundry, attends social activities, and arranges weekly hair appointments.  She has become recognized as the chief cook in her house and her quick wit has made her popular as an entertainer at Senior Village parties.  She derives a great deal of satisfaction and affection from her pet cat that she has acquired and trained.

The houses were donated by the Maricopa County Flood District.  The renovations, furnishings, and continuing maintenance of the properties were accomplished through the commitment of service clubs, churches, volunteer labor, private and business contributions, and resident fees in partnership with Maricopa County Revenue Sharing funds.  Value of volunteer labor and donations of furniture are estimated at $35,000 for the first year of operation of Senior Village.  The staffing and implementation of services resulted from a funding commitment of the Area Agency on Aging, residents fees, and revenue sharing funds.

Volunteers continue to provide service to the residents int he way of transporting for shopping and hair appointments, friendly visiting, and involvement in community, social, and church activities.

Senior Village, in northwest Phoenix, has demonstrated its success in quality of care and cost effectiveness int he care of the elderly.  It is planned to replicate the concept in the East Valley area utilizing the social atmosphere of a mobile home park.  Six trailers have been offered by the Maricopa County Flood District to start the expansion to the East Valley.  Six more mobile homes will be needed to complete the project.

Entertainment for the Senior Village celebration will be provided by the talented residents with singing, music, and poetry.  Original Christmas crafts designed and made by Senior Village will be on display.

1982 Roberta's letter -Nov.3

Nov 3rd [1982]
8:30 –
Dear Family,

Hi!  Just got done with the 5th Algebra test – only about a month left of school – can't say I'm sorry – esp. now with the cold weather!!  This AM could see my breath ––

Called up the J. [or Sr.?] Uibles last pm – to discuss the election returns.

We are having a Big Birthday Party tomorrow – Sr. Village 1st Birthday.  Alot of people have been invited so will be interesting to see how many people do show.  We've ordered a cake for 100 people.

This last weekend I got over to East Mesa to visit – that was nice – except never enough time to visit all I'd like to.

Got the 1st group of pictures back w/ my new camera – some turned out pretty good – but alot needed better focus.  Should be lots better by Christmas ––

This weekend we are going to Flagstaff – Pine Cone Festival – it's sponsored by the Garden Clubs of the area.  It is held in a high school & then will be some workshops on how to do projects – also pine cones to be sold –– supposedly very reasonable.  Up by the cabin the pine cones just aren't dropping.

Marion went up to the cabin last weekend – closed it up for the winter –––

We will probably just go up for a day while the Hortons are here.  Also hope to get to the Painted Desert – we could stay at the Motel 6 in Holbrook

Did I tell you that Sr. Village was donated a bike?  It was in BAD shape – so I took it to the bike shop – got it all fixed up - running good.  Have just been using it for running back & forth to house –––

[Note at bottom of page:]  –– found in Alg. notebook 11/15/82.

1973 Catherine's letter -Nov.2

Catherine uses her last sheet of neon green stationery. Transcription follows. I remember going to visit the Nearings but evidently that was a different trip if I didn't go on this one. They were an impressive couple, but I did not have her motivation or abilities for that type of lifestyle. Transcription follows.

Friday Morning

November 2, 1973
Dear Mom, Dad, John & Mary,

Hi!  Thanks for the letter from Atlanta.  Sounds like you had a good time.  Hope you got home OK.  We had never heard of Farrell's.

X has gone to visit the Nearings [Helen & Scott] (authors of Living the Good Life) for 2 days.  They spoke at Nasson last week & he made arrangements to observe their stone construction techniques.  They are building a new house.  So Kuman and I are here alone.

We have found some land which we like fairly well.  It is a 15 acre piece with a creek & marsh land on the back boundary.  The owner will sell it for $11,000 with the timber or $6600 after the big trees are cut.  We want the trees but like the price better without them.  X is having someone from the Forest Service & the Soil Conservation look it over next week.

Dad, do you think there is any hope for Foremost-McKesson?  We're probably going to have to sell it sometime in the next year or so but I sure wish it would go up.

We've had alternating nice days with cold & rainy ones this week.  No snow yet.

This is my last piece of stationery so I'll have to go back to recycling.

X joined Kiwanis.  They meet every Wednesday for lunch.  Plus that they're having a big shindig this month to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the national organization.

We took our driver's test on Wednesday.  X missed one too many on the written test and I couldn't parallel park so we both have to try again.

New shelving for the lobby of the library is to arrive on the 12th of this month.  We're going to close the library down for 3 days to move all the books.  We're trying to spruce up the cellar and shelve the fiction there.  Also, the furnace room has been made into a staff lounge so we now have someplace to eat supper.

Got to go ––

Love, Catherine & X

1983 Family Letter -Nov.1

Some typos have been corrected, others not. Transcription follows.

Tuesday -
Nov. 1, 1983
Dearest Family -

We have had a beautiful fall - plenty of rain at times but now gorgeous - hard to believe some people have left already for Florida.  The leaves haven't fallen too much and have stayed pretty for a long time.  New England was beautiful but think Ohio can really compete with its own fall foliage.

Things are progressing nicely for Roberta and Syd's [sic] wedding and the date is set for Dec. 31 instead of the 30th which gives a little leeway in case of bad weather.  There are still some things which need a little more time before they will be definite.  WE are so thinkful [sic] that it is working out that so many are able to come.  Wish that they might have longer in Arizona but thankful that things have worked out this well.  Dad and I plan to drive out as of right now and will leave Dec. 19 and hopefully arrive the 22nd.  Serena is flying out the 24th and leaving the 1st.  John, X and Mary Virginia are flying out the 29 and back the 2nd and Catherine, Gerry and Wendy (and Dee Dee?) are to come the 26th and leave Jan. 6th.  Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill are coming with Grandma after Christmas and plan to stay til Jan. 10 so Bill and Gerry hope to get in some golf.  We would like more of the Horton family to come but they are meeting at Marianne and Larry's.  Hopefully Joe might arrange something by meeting John and X and MV in Columbus.  Lois Bruce is also coming for a couple of days from San Diego so it will be nice for her and us to get together, as she hasn't seen our whole family for quite a few years.

Talked to Serena on the phone but didn't know til we got her delayed letter (coming via Portland, ME) that she hadn't been feeling well but another call reassured us she is on the mend.  The Morgans are super busy - Gerry interrupted the painting of their house (exterior) to talk to us and Catherine later said that project is now complete.  Grandma shared some pictures that they sent to her taken over the past summer of Wendy and some school pictures which we are proudly displaying.  John and X are busy too and worked in a seminar at Wheaton with another couple from the area.  Mary Virginia sang at a wedding recently of a sister of a friend of hers.  She will soon be out of school like the Monday before Thanksgiving and doesn't have to be back until the 4th of January but plans to work at Extended Care during that time so doesn't feel she can leave for AZ until after Christmas which we regret.

Dad and I had a nice trip to Cleveland Thursday - I attended an OELMA meeting and he did some research at the CPL among other things.  We came back on Saturday by way of Springfield to attend a Half-Niter square dance there.  We didn't stay til the end but both of us were glad we had that extra hour of sleep we could use.

I also accompanied Dad on his annual sales trip to West Virginia last Tuesday and got to see an old friend from college days.  Things are much more depressed there due to the coal situation.

This Friday evening Orville Harner is marrying Josephine Kearns Hadley - she is taking squaredance lessons  now so will soon be able to accompany him to all the dances.  We plan to go with the Salisburys as it is at their former church - Falls Creek Friends Meeting and they know the way quite well.

1953 Jean's letter -Nov.1

Lots of comments could be made about this letter from Jean to her Mother, written the first of November, 1953. Transcription follows.

Sunday
Nov. 1, 1953
Dearest Mother,

Received your letter last week and hope Bob is feeling better by now and that the plant will soon be in production again.

Harold called last night and he's getting along fine -- getting old customers back on the orders again. He was in Dallas, Texas and will be there tomorrow & then start back -- & plans to reach home Saturday.

Mother & Daddy Uible were here for dinner today. She wasn't at church today -- has cold that settled in her chest. After they left, it was such a pretty afternoon that we 3 went for a walk & came home tired out. So now they're both in bed fast asleep.

We had a big week. Wednesday was Woman's Club & that night we (Margaret Pemberton & I) got 15# of potatoes ready to serve as scalloped potatoes for the district WSCS the next day -- Thursday. There were way over 200 at the church from all over the district. They served chicken sandwiches, scalloped potatoes, buttered Lima beans, cabbage, carrot-pineapple in jello salad, pumpkin pie & whipped cream, relish, coffee.

That afternoon was busy enough but the school was holding a Halloween Carnival so I took the girls up there & we never got home til after 10:00 from it. Needless to say we all slept til after 8:30 the next morning.

Betty McElwee called yesterday & asked me to go to Hillsboro with her & Alice Rudisill. Judy is home now but not allowed on her feet for seven more weeks. She has been home a week & not in a cast but it's hard to keep her from standing. Betty looks so tired & no wonder.

I got a new black skirt while in Hillsboro -- and I like it real well -- it's so soft & I've already gotten use out of it -- worn it all day.

Everybody likes the two dresses I got in Steubenville -- black trimmed with red & gray pleated Orlon -- they're all the rage.

Tomorrow night I'm going to Washington Court House to hear Bishop Werner with Donna & Waldo Cornelius. There's a dinner preceding it & Mrs. Werner is going to show movies there taken on their recent tripe to Korea. He (the Bishop) is a wonderful speaker. There's a crowd going from here.

Maxine is so wrapped up in her baby she's really hurting Paul's good works. He has done so much for the church & she uses the baby for every excuse to get out of any work, or going anyplace. She doesn't believe in waking Wes or arrange her schedule so she could get to church. I just hope it isn't too late by the time she wakes up to the fact that her husband's work should come before her baby's schedule.

Roberta still doesn't try to talk much -- Babeee -- tick-a tick (tickle) -- bye -- she does pretty well about going to the toilet. She's going to be a live wire. Her teeth are bothering her again so she chews on everything & slobbers over everything she wears.

They knocked over the outside toilets in our backyard last night & tore them pretty badly. I don't know whether they can be righted very well or not. Two more little girls have moved behind us so Catherine & Roberta enjoy playing with them -- & the other two already there -- 3,5,6,7.

They weren't a bit afraid of the Halloweeners & we had plenty of them Friday nite.

When are you thinking of going to Florida? We may go the last part of the month. But then maybe in December. If so you're welcome to a ride. Let's hear from you.

All our very best love, Harold, Jean, Catherine & Roberta

1973 Roberta's letters -Oct.31

Roberta sends two letters for the price of one. Transcription of both follow.

October 31, 1973
Dear Family,
Hi – I just got done taking my 2nd psychology exam.  I had hoped to do much better on this – to pull up my grade from the 1st one – but now I just hope that I did as well on it as the 1st one.  Time will tell . . . . .

Monday we got our mid terms back in Deviance class.  Before I tell you mine – I'll give you some facts – out of 60 people 28 people flunked.  I got a 'C' – nothing to brag about but I'm thankful I didn't flunk!  We won't be having any more tests in it till the final.  A lot of people are dropping the course.  I'm going to stick it out and hope for a miracle!  (ho, hum!!)

I hope you all had a good trip back to N.V. – riding in comfort in that new car! – Listening to tapes & using those electric windows!

Did you eat lunch at Miss Maratha's? (sp?)  After a few more trips we'll be able to write our own guide to restaurants.  I think I'll write one on where to eat when on a diet.

After how much I ate over the week-end I was almost scared to go to weight watchers yesterday.  But – I had another one of my dynamic weight losses – ½ of a pound!!

I also was given my permanent placing as to where I'll be working.  Starting next week - Tuesday evenings at the main office - which is on Military Trail.  I was given lots of info and material to read.

My flight home was fine.  Instead of the regular corned beef & swiss cheese sandwiches I was served my special snack - fresh fruit; rye krisps (sp?) (which I couldn't eat - not allowed) and diet pop.

I got a letter from Cheryl Rogers yesterday - she has been really sick - something about white & red blood cells!

I go back to work tomorrow - it will feel good getting back.  It's been 2 weeks Sunday since I worked.

Well - it's almost time to get to deviance class.  I'll write more later.

Please give Grandma the enclosed letter – Love, Berta

Mary V––  I have your grey coat - it was in the closet at the hotel room.  Do you want me to send it?

Dear Grandma –

Thought I would enclose this w/ the families letter - my effort to save a few cents!

We got your letter yesterday – no - day before I guess it was.  Thanks - it's still nice to get mail down here!

Everyone at Church is beginning to ask when you will be coming down to Florida.  There was really a good service this last Sunday Evening - a group of high school and/or college kids from another Methodist Church came and sang.  The Church was rally filled up but alot of the people came w/ the group.  Mrs. McGrew went with us and I think she enjoyed it.

Mrs. McGrew and I are hoping to go bike riding - out to eat - next Tuesday.  Same place down in Lantana - I'm not sure of the name of the place.

I imagine you've heard from the family all the details of the Atlanta trip.  We really had alot of fun – eating – and everything else.  Cris sent me back w/some tulip bulbs for you - from Holland.  But - in the meantime – until you come down - we're not exactly sure what to do w/them – whether to put them in the refrigerator, freezer - or what!!

I'm glad you renewed (spelling) the Wilmington News Journal.  It just ran out a couple of weeks ago.

It's almost supper time – I have broiled liver w/me – that way I just go to the cafeteria and buy a salad and vegetable - and I have a good supper.  The school cafeteria is really very good - always a choice of 4 vegetables.  Also lots of different types of salads and fruits.  The only thing that's bad is that the desserts are one shelf above the salads.  I don't know shy they have to be so close to each other.  But –– I'll brag – I didn't weaken!!

Well - better go ––

Love, Roberta

NV Women to Kingwood Center -Oct.24

Grandma is pictured prominently in this clipping, presumably from the Wilmington News-Journal about the group of women traveling to Kingwood Center in Mansfield, Ohio.  Partially transcribed below.  If I lived a couple thousand miles closer to the Wilmington Library, I'd rush over there and look at the microfiche for the rest of the names.

1963 Beautiful Gardens of Kingwood Center - Oct. 24: Jean third from left, Gladys Hiestand Uible fifth from right (in black hat), and Mary Uible Horton (?) three further left from GHU.

By Mabel Davis
Mrs. Harold Fisher, Mrs. Harold Uible and Mrs. L. Eugene Smith as hostesses of the New Vienna Woman's Club chartered a bus and arranged a trip to Kingwood Center at Mansfield for Wednesday for members of the club and guests, 35 in all.  It was a lovely ride over mostly new highways and the fall flowers were in abundance.

[Several paragraphs about the flowers]  At 12:30 we had lunch.

Those making the trip were Mrs. C.B. Eichelberger and Mrs. Harold Garrison of Blanchester, Mrs. Raymond Swartz of Hillsboro, Mrs. Samuel Ahman, Ms. Albert McKay, Mrs. Maynard Davids, Mrs. Ralph Hurley, Mrs. Charles R. Kirk, Mrs. William Levo, Mrs. E.J. McMillan, Mrs. Sam B. Rice and Mrs. Sheldon Shrieves, of Wilmington.

Mrs. Harry F. Allen, Mrs. Harry G. Allen, Mrs. Lewis Bernard Mrs. Charles Black- [and there the clipping ends, but this is most likely the list of women attending from New Vienna in alphabetical order.]

1983 CMH (Twig) -Oct.27

Jean was very active in the Clinton Memorial Hospital Guild made up of smaller groups called TWIGs (Together With Important Goals).  According to the Health Alliance of Clinton County, Ohio the Guild was formed shortly after the opening of Clinton Memorial Hospital in 1951 and by 1954 had 16 Twigs with 441 members.  "When the CMH became a for profit business in 2010, it was no longer legally possible for the Auxiliary to remain a part of CMH." They are now a non-profit, The Health Alliance of Clinton County.

This clipping from the Wilmington News-Journal, Thursday, October 27, 1983 mentions Jean as retiring vice president; and Mie Young Kim, who entertained the guild prior to the business meeting with several beautiful songs.

1993 Wendy's postcard from Scotland -Oct.27

Oct. 27, 1993
Birthday greetings from Scotland.  Happy 60 somethingth Birthday!  How are you?  Not much is new here.  I went to a disco last night for Halloween.  But I didn't dress up.  Today I'm going to Young Enterprise.  I'm the Deputy Financial Director.  Impressive.  Mom told me that you will be coming over to see me.  That's really great.  I hope you can spend as much time as possible with me.  You wouldn't be a burden at all.  There's a nice hotel near my school that you could stay at.  I am going to London soon which should be fun.  I'll send you a postcard!  The Kirkmans dog had 4 puppies.  They look like hamsters.  I'm glad I don't have a pet at home.  I think 10 months of a dog is all I can take!  Gotta Run.  Write back soon!  Love, Wendy

1973 Sarah Hinerman letter - Oct.23

[postmarked 23 Oct 1973]
Sunday aft.

Dear Jean and all,

We were so glad to get your newsy letter - glad to talk with Harold, too.  I saw in the paper an account Maude Miskelly's death and I thought maybe you all might be in this area and drop in on us.

Your family seems busy and active, as always.  I will sure take my hat off to Roberta for losing some weight as I have been trying to do so – I don't go to Weight Watchers, though, but as I understand it that is the only system. I don't get any exercise and you can't maintain much of a figure sitting in front of the TV and eating.  My "helper" (household) broke her ankle about four weeks ago and I have been chasing the dirt "solo" since then so I have been moving around a bit and really feeling better.  It's impossible to get any help in these parts and I've just been real lucky to have had her for several years.

I don't know when we'll go to Stuart [town in Florida 10 miles SW of Port St. Lucie], – Chauncey says not until nearer Christmas time as it's too long down there, – nor for me, however – I'm glad to escape the snow and winter weather.  Sarah Jane flew up from Atlanta last year and drove us clear to Stuart and is going to do same this year.  Susan came to Glen Dale with her last year and we dropped her off at Atlanta going down.

Stuart has had a Dupont office for three years and now has an office for Hutton brokers – Their Dupont office moved into a nice new building last year, – the Hutton office just opened.  Chauncey rides up town to the brokers two or three times a day – We live on the boulevard to the ocean about three miles from the main part of town.

Are you planning to come to Florida this winter?  . . . . We have lots of room.  There are lots of new eating places here now, it's sort of a joke as to where will all the people come from to patronize them.  However, they're all filled up – (new & larger Elbys, "Long John Silver" fish place, Pasquale's Pizza, etc.)  We'll let Mary Va. try them all if you come over –

Let us hear from you all and start out for Glen Dale some fine day –

Love to all, Sarah H

Hope to see Roberta

1983 Roberta's letter - Oct.25

Roberta writes a letter to Grandma shortly after announcing her upcoming marriage to Sid. Transcription follows.

Tuesday Evening

10/25/83

Dear Grandma,

Hi!  Thanks for your letter!  Sure looks like you are functioning better than I am after hearing the BIG NEWS!  It's all I can do to keep from biting my finger-nails!

I have changed your Airline ticket – so now it is identical to the flights that the Hortons will be coming & going on.  The flight from West Palm Beach to Phoenix is on December 28th – then returning to Florida on the 10th of January.

I'm sorry you won't be here before Christmas – as originally planned.  BUT – Marian is being a real pain - at this time - tho it doesn't look like she will be moving out until before Christmas.  That would be the best time for her – to make a move.  SO – I might be a few days without much furniture!

I assure you by the 28th - we will have this house full of furniture again!  Sid's furniture is really going to go great in this house.  We might have to buy a few pieces of furniture.

Thank you again for sending your Christmas check – your generous Christmas gift – early.  Since it won't be used as originally planned for the cruise – It will be used toward wedding expense.  There seems to be so many details now to take care of.

I can understand why some people want to take the easy way out and run off & get married by a Justice of the Peace!  Tho we aren't tempted to do that – especially with our families making the effort to be here!

Today we took a group of Senior Village residents to a park about 30 miles form here.  They really enjoyed it - we had a picnic lunch – drove all around a lake with lots of boats in the water.  WE left here at 10:00 AM – back about 3:00 PM – and they were really TIRED!!

It's almost 11:00 PM – so I'm tired too!

Much love, Roberta

1973 B'day Dinner in Atlanta - Oct.27

After a 1972 birthday brunch in Michigan the 1973 celebration was held in Atlanta.  HH, Jean, John and Mary Va. were joined by Cris from North Carolina and Roberta from Florida for an excess of food at Pittypat's Porch for supper, followed by dessert at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour.  There is a note written at the top of the Pittypat's Porch menu with the date and a mention of the new Mercury, which was now in use for the road trip.

Farrells's Ice Cream Parlours numbered 120 nationwide in 1975 but most were sold off in the 1980s.  Today there are less than half a dozen, all in California except one in Hawaii.

1972 Win Schuler's Menu - Oct. 29

Win Schuler's was the brunch place of choice on Sunday, October 29, 1972.  Possibly this was during a weekend visit to Michigan, as Catherine was still living there at that time.  Win's original historic and now only location is in Marshall, Michigan, about 35 miles east of Kalamazoo.  The back of the 1972 menu lists several other locations including: Jackson, Stevensville, Ft. Wayne, Ann Arbor, Grand Haven and East Lansing.

Entrees include Jumbo Fried Shrimp $5.95, Prime Rib $7.00; with the most expensive menu item being Lobster Tail for $9.75.  Beverages (doesn't mention free refills) 35¢; and an assortment of desserts for 85¢.

1983 Cynthia's letter to Roberta -Oct.24

After learning of her father's engagement to Roberta, Sid's daughter, Cynthia, writes a letter.  Transcription follows.

Suffolk [England]
24 October, 1983

Dear Roberta,

Just a card to say hello and to tell you again how happy I am for you and my Dad.  For both of you the idea of marriage must hold lots of challenges and excitement.  Having been married for 14 years I can attest to both – and also to the difficulties of marriage.  But where love & good will abound – nothing is impossible – and so I look with hope and optimism toward this new relationship.
Although I am very happy for you, I have to confess to being doubly or even triply happy for my Dad.  Sid is a truly wonderful person but life has been very hard on him.  He responded heroically to the many disappointments and difficulties he's faced but they have all taken their toll.  And somewhere – in the fairly recent past – he got off on the wrong track and it has seemed to be a wide way – leading to sorrow.   But I see in his love for you a tremendous desire to shake his life up and turn himself back to a path of meaning and fulfillment.  And this is tremendous.  Such awareness and opportunities come rarely in life.  That it has come to my father was my deepest and most earnest prayer for him.

You will both continue to be the object of my prayers – but I believe firmly in the power of the Holy Spirit and the power of Love and I know your lives will be blessed.

[the letter continues but the remainder has been removed from this copy.]
