Sat afternoon

Dear Jean & Harold,

We are having rain this afternoon so we have to stay in.  Roberta is sleeping and Catherine is drying some dishes.  We washed the car yesterday as it was very pretty outside.  Then we went to the barn and Roberta walked right up and petted the calves.  She also caught a chicken.  Catherine was mad because she had been trying all week to catch one & couldn't.  They are both O.K. so far.  I don't believe Catherine is quite so lonesome as she was.  I showed her Oscar's niece's picture and told her that she slept in the same bad and so forth and now she feels like a big girl for the niece is soon six years old.

We had a trip to New Vienna this A.M. and Catherine told me how to go.  She also showed me where she lived and she didn't want to stop or anything so I guess maybe I was just scared she might be getting homesick.

One of our neighbors died Thursday.  He was a very good friend and had helped me so much when Oscar was gone.  He died so sudden it was an awful shock, because although he was 79 years old he was very young acting and such good help.  We certainly are going to miss him.  I want to go to the funeral to-morrow so I went to New Vienna this A.M. and Miss Letty said she would come out & stay with the children.  I hope this was O.K.  I stopped and asked Mildred [Henderson] but they were having company and she is having a spell with her nerves again and all she could do was cry and then that yard is right on the highway so I thought it would be much better to have Miss Letty out here.  We stopped in at the Steeles as I wanted to find out about my report for next Sunday night.  We really had quite a visit all around town.

I was amused at Miss Letty she was very much worried for fear the girls weren't getting along alright way out here.  She said she wasn't very well but she thought it would do her good to sit with the girls.  She even said she would miss church and eat an early dinner so she would be ready.

Well I am out of paper so must sign off.

1981 Family Letter -Mar.30

 

Monday 

March 30, 1981

Dear Family:

Can't seem to get the typewriter to work properly but guess I can use darker copies since it doesn't want to print otherwise.  Seems like a long time since the Morgans were here and we went to Chicago with them and to see Serena.  The weather here now is beautiful -- a little windy but sunny and warm.  Did have a little rain yesterday but everything is in good shape for Mary Virginia's first track meet this afternoon.  I hope to get over to the high school to see them.  Today is Dad's day at the Court House with the Commissioners so he will try to make it another time.  Mary Virginia throws the shot put -- I weighed it after trying to just lift it and found it weighed nine pounds and is just the size of a croquet ball.  [This is my best guess as to this paragraph which is difficult to decipher.]  It is really concentrated and deceivable.

I enjoyed talking to both Roberta and Catherine on Wednesday and Serena on Saturday morning.  Also talked to Aunt Virginia yesterday so it has been quite a week for long distance calls.

There seems to be a mixup on just when Ester vacation is -- we had thought it began Weds., Apr. 15 but MV said the calendar said we got the whole week before Easter off.  Today I asked at school and they said we only get Friday and Monday off so that puts our trip to North Carolina in jeopardy as Dad wanted to combine it with business stops in Charleston that Thursday.  Will let you all know more definitely if our plans change but so far they remain the same.  Whether the girls will want to take off that Thursday is the big question.  The old saying "Time solves all the problems".

It has been a "newsy" afternoon with the news of the shooting in Washington.  This morning's scripture in the Upper Room has been appropriate.  "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth" --Proverbs 27:1

Bob Johnson's closing out sale is now up to 40% off . . . did buy some belts and dress shirts so should be fixed there for the rest of the decade.  Billy Walker has been helping out in the store.

Last Thursday night the Spanish III class put on an evening of entertainment, in which MV had a part.  It was a lively show and good attendance.  MV is talking about taking Spanish IV next year.  What with her music, track, etc. and school time zips by.  Mie Young is getting along fine and pitches in like a member of the family.

Last Saturday cleaned the garden off, put out some onions, peas and potatoes (out of the 50+ bag that Carrs had given us).  The rhubarb is just coming thru the ground.  The "Sold" sign is up on the house behind you, Mother, tho know no other details.

Went into Bob & Carl's grocery in Wilmington after work today -- did get some bargains at the over ripe fruit area and ran into Mrs. Reynolds from Blanchester told me that she had seen Leslie and Joan this winter, as the Reynolds were spending three months in southern Calif. away from their ranch.  She remarked that "Margery looks old."  [Not sure who the Mrs. Reynolds in Blanchester is, but Leslie & Joan would be Aunt Serena's son and daughter-in-law.  Leslie (1922-1998), Joan (1924-2020).  Aunt Serena Uible (1884-1963) and her husband Leslie Sr. (1878-1924) had five children: Helen Reynolds Hancock (1910-1963); Marjorie Reynolds Guild (1912-1994); Serena Reynolds Pugh (1914-1968);  Lucille Reynolds Triplett Hunnicut Ito (1916-2009) and Leslie Jr.]  The grocery stores in Wilm. are great places to "run into" people.

Last Friday morning the Wilmington Area C of C had a legislative breakfast with Congressman McEwen as speaker.  It was an informal session with some 60 people present.  One has to marvel how these "politicians" keep up the pace . . . .  Clinton County is a large enough area for me anyway.

It is now early Tuesday morning -- the track meet lasted til around 8 PM and by the time the girls had to go back to the school, change clothes and take Vicki Butler home we had a late supper.  Thanks to Dad we ate as soon as we got home -- even had soup for a first course.  I was ready for bed afterwards especially to get my feet warm and I hadn't stayed to watch the whole meet but went to the car to hear the news on the assassination attempt.  Reagan was so lucky the shot wasn't two inches away and would have reached his heart.

Last Friday I had a shock to find we'd blown a fuse on the breezeway and everything in one deepfreeze had defrosted.  Luckily Charles Thompson came soon and was able to get things going again.  I had changed the fuse but it blew out right away.  I had plenty to cook that day and we have been eating well ever since.  Glad that I had taken Serena some of the lamb or we would have had even more to use up right away.  Luckily most everything in that freezer could stand refreezing like bread, etc. but did have the lamb and beef liver so Dad had liver & onions and I froze some that I had cooked.

Saturday Night
[3/30/81]

Hi, Grandma!

Thanks for your letter -- the last of the 15¢-ers!  I didn't get my letters out -- that I had hoped to -- before it went up!  Every thing keeps going up!!

Perhaps you have heard that we sold this house & bought another one -- the "new" house is about 10 years old -- in a retirement area -- not far from where I work.  Really a nice neighborhood -- no kids -- which I'm going to enjoy!!

We also bought a small A-frame cabin near Payson -- about 2 hours from here.  It's a beautiful area -- cool in the summer!!  Resort property is suppose to be a good investment!!  You will have lots to see when you come in October!!  Now you can see why there is no trip to Ohio this summer!!

We went to a ball game this aftn -- Chicago Cubs / Oakland A's.  Best part of it is -- I got a little tan.

Next Saturday we are taking lots of staff to a park/swap -- sell some of our MANY non-needed collectables!!  Hi to all --

1981 Catherine's Letter -Mar.30

 Monday, March 30, 1981

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  Well, it took me a week to get a letter written, but here it is!  I have another week of "vacation" this week as Wendy has the chicken pox and of course I can't take her to the Day Care Center.  She can go back there six days after she quits breaking out so I am in hopes she will be able to go back next Monday.  She had one pox on Saturday and then yesterday quite a few with some more having shown up today.  She must have been exposed sometime while we were on vacation but we sure don't know where.  I hate to miss this much work especially without pay but not too much to be done about it.  Wendy seems to feel pretty good -- a little fussier than usual and I have to keep reminding her not too itch.

Gerry and I played Bingo at the Elks on Friday night and won $10 each so that wasn't too bad!  Saturday night we got a babysitter (the Day Care Center is only open to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday now as they didn't have very many children on Saturday nights -- other nights still open to midnight though) and went to a combination wedding reception -- barn dance for our friends Jack & Sally.  It was alot of fun but my feet were frozen by the end of the evening by standing on the cold cement all night.

Tonight I am going to play Bunco at the Elks.  Gerry and I were both going to go but now we can't really leave Wendy so he said he would stay home tonight since I will be home all day.  Wendy and I will probably have cabin fever before this week is over.  I figured if it was nice out we could probably go bike riding as long as we don't stop to talk to any children!  Saturday we had a really nice day with the temperature climbing to 69 and not much wind.  Today it is 46º with a wind of around 30 mph which leaves the wind chill factor at 20º.

Just heard on the radio that Reagan is in the hospital.  I missed the details though.  I gather that he has been wounded.  I'm sure the full details will be available.

I need to close now as we are going to the post office and then to pick Gerry up for lunch

1981 Roberta's Letter -Mar.26

 

Thursday Night

[3/26/81]

Dear Family,

I think I'll try to sneak in a letter to all of you this afternoon.  I am at work and the Spanish class just got started so it will be fairly quiet for the next hour.  About 16 people are taking Spanish.  That seems to be just a good size class.  We can't charge -- tho we do putout a donation can -- they have the opportunity to give.  The instructor gets 75% of the take and we get the other 25% to further expand the programs out here.  We're lucky if we take in $5.00 per class so no-one is getting rich too fast.

Mother it was good to talk to you the other morning.  I had wanted to call since I hadn't written for some time.  Just don't seem to get many letters written any more.  Now with the idea of the move ahead of us -- more to do.  There are still some boxes in the garage that we haven't unpacked from the last move.  We went through alot of that stuff last night and decided that there was alot we could live without.  The new house has less storage space than where we are now.

I could be writing a book about all the doings lately.  We decided we wanted to get the carport (its a large double one) enclosed.  The walls are already there -- just a matter of extending the one side, hanging the door, etc.  So I called up three places to get an estimate.  The first place came and their estimate was just over $1800.  The 2nd estimate was $1300.  And then the third was just over $2600.  I about fell over.  Well this last guy said in order to close in the garage you had to get a building permit.  And when you do that you have to bring it all up to current fire code.  Which meant adding more drywall to the entire roof over the garage.  A new door (to replace the hollow door) from the garage into the kitchen.  Where we are now -- its a hollow door going into the kitchen from the garage.

#3 estimate said how if we didn't get the permit and we got caught we would be much worse off in the end.  How we would have a fine to pay, and have to make the changed later . . . .  So I got busy on the phone.  Called up the other two places that gave us the estimate.  The 1st one being the development that built the house.  They told me that within the last year they had enclosed in about 20 to 25 garages and had not gotten a permit for any of them.  They said that when you change the structure of the house then you must get a permit.  Like they said that when you would get a porch enclosed, or add a room -- then of course you had to get a building permit and the whole thing.

We still haven't decided which way to go.  We either need to enclose in the garage or buy a large storage shed.  They aren't cheap -- or near as handy.  Then there is the idea as far as putting in a floor for one.  Concrete is very expensive -- tho it is the best -- tho too permanent.

Very few of the houses out there have fences of any kind -- we have talked about getting a small art of the yard fenced off for Buffy -- tho have decided that can wait.

We did go ahead and order the carpet.  There too we got three different estimates.  Each place figured a different amount of yardage needed.  The carpet is really a pretty color -- the kind of color that the dog hair will blend with.  We have already got the old carpet sold that was in the living room and dining area.  I can't think that anyone would want the stuff that's in the bedrooms.  It's that real long shag.  combination of blue/green/gray.  We have also sold the lawnmower already.  Tho we will be able to borrow it twice (or more) if needed to mow the back yard.

I've also got my bike for sale.  It's been a headache in that it doesn't always start for me.  We have decided that we can get by with just the car and the one bike.  I will just be a mile and half from work -- Uible walking distance.

I've been wondering if you all would like me to rent a car for the time you will be here.  The rates are pretty reasonable for a week.  For a compact $66 and unlimited miles.  Do let me know -- the compacts always go first -- then they stick you with these big gas eating cars for double the price.

Marion seems to really be enjoying her spring vacation.  Sally and Marion have been out there three days this week.  Think I told Mother about Marion going to show the deal on Mt. Saint Helen's.  That morning she couldn't find the soundtrack that goes with the slides -- so she had to do the talking herself.  It all worked out fine -- and the people here really enjoyed it.

Now at home -- will enclose some pictures of the new house -- just wish I had some of the cabin.  Please send them to Grandma after you are done looking at them.

Your letter came in today's mail -- THANKS!  Also Mary Virginia's letter -- what a pleasant surprise!  Sure understand why you all didn't have much time for writing letters last few weeks.

How do the menus sound to you all? [The reverse side of the paper has the week's menu and activities at the East Mesa Site of the Senior Center.]  We will have to eat at the Center one day while you all are here.

We are going to start Art classes 1st week of April for 10 weeks -- Monday afternoons.  Spanish class will last through April.

1981 Family Letter -Mar.22

 

Sunday Evening, March 22nd [1981]

Dear Family:

Hope that all of you have been thinking that no news is good news as we just did not get into gear this past week in writing.  First was the overnight trip to Cleveland in which Elizabeth Johnson went with your Mother to get the Morgans and who enjoyed the John Uibles hospitality on the way home.

Thursday morning we left Mary Virginia and Mie Young with Ruth Shoemaker (or perhaps we should say the other way around) for Chicago.  Our first stop was in Cincinnati, where the Morgans got some things at Velva Sheen (always a popular stop).  Then the Hamilton County Court House where I had some papers to file (they won't take them by mail). (Have another estate in Youngstown and fortunately they do accept papers by mail.)  We stopped in Greeensburg IN for lunch at Bonanza and right across the street was one of our customers so spent a few minutes talking with them.

We got into Chicago about 5:30 and met Serena and Greg for supper.  We were lucky each night in parking on the street for garage parking is in the $6 and up range.  Friday we took in some of the high lights of Chicago including the Museum of Science & Industry, Aquarium and the Natural History Museum and Wendy kept right up with us.

The Morgans train left at 6:50 P.M. and had no trouble in getting to see their "compartment" on the train, which was a treat for us.  They [are due] to get home this afternoon.  Like all grandchildren Wendy is growing up so rapidly and always seems ready to go.

Yesterday we did some shopping around, including a stop at the Library.  Last night we went to a movie at the Chicago Art Institute on Alger Hiss, which was interesting in seeing the old interviews of FDR, Hoover, Nixon, etc.

Serena came with us as far as Lafayette, Ind. today so that we could have a longer visit, a look around Purdue Univ. and lunch at a good place there that we had been some years ago.  We missed out on Church with the change of time from CST to EST.  She would get back into Chicago around 6 P.M.

Roberta, we were interested in seeing the ads on the various houses in the Phoenix area and even more so in seeing you folks and your new home(s) this Mary

     Dad has written so much in capsule form -- we so enjoying having the Morgans even if our visit wasn't as long as we would have liked but glad they got to see John and Carol (me too) and also Serena so if Roberta has lived a little further north and G'ma and the Hortons they would have been able to take in the whole family.  Wendy saw so many relatives and did so much going -- it will be difficult for her to come back to reality.  But she was also looking forward to seeing her friends and teachers at the day care school too and would have alot to talk about -- wonder how much she will remember of the train trip in years to come.

March 15, 1971

Dear Family,

Hi!  Just now got your letter mailed after I called.  I'm now in Chapel - Pres. of school just babbling.

I'm more or less ready for Civilization exam.  Got alot of stuff in my brain right now.  Galileo, Kepler, Robespierre, Newton, Wesley, Luther, Huss, Louis 15th, & Louis 16th, Tobalk the II & III, Harvey, Calvin, Zwingli, Eck, Teltzel, Rousseau, Bacon, Descartes, Knox, etc, etc!! Help!!

Also English vocab test today too.  Strain my Brain!  

After I (?) - you all - sent U.C. $25.00 you would think they could at least send Rev. Lynd a reference!!

How do you like this stationery?  [On the reverse side is a renewal notice for "Today's Health".]

Still no details about this summer.  I did talk to the Chaplain here -- he said he could understand why you all wanted to know about it.  He said a bunch of big words which all meant that it was a very good program, I should feel lucky for being accepted & that they are no fakes.  More info later.

Well. Glad to hear that you all are fine.

What is Catherine sick about?  I mean why did she have to go to the doctor?

1971 Roberta's Letter -Mar.14

 

10:38 P.M.

Sunday - 14th

[March 1971]

Dear Family,

Hi!  By this time tomorrow I'll have 1½ of my exams over.  We'll be having ½ of our English exam early & the whole Civilization exam early.  By the way -- I had my Criminal Investigation exam Thursday night.  It was an experience!!  All true & false except for some multiple choice.

I thought I better write while I could.  I doubt if I'll have much time to write between now till I get down to Cindy's house on Thursday & Friday.

We just got back from the seeing the movie His Land - it was showing at a Junior High in Sherwood which is only eight miles from here.  The Quaker Church there put it on.  Have you all ever heard of the movie?  It is put out by Billy Graham.  It was simply a geography lesson on Israel.

I have decided to strain my brain next term & take Criminal Investigation.  I'm very curious to see what I get out of it this term.  I've got a good feeling I will be getting quite a few C's this term.

Maybe a "C" if I'm lucky in Civilization.  And maybe a "C" in Social Problems if I'm unlucky.  I think B's in Eng. & US History.  Really not sure about Mental Health -- perhaps a "C" there too.

We are listening to the music of His Land - Pam took her tape cassette & taped the songs.  The songs in it were good.

I have all of my work done & handed in -- now all  I have to do is take the exams.  What a life?!?

Pam & Cindie have not been accepted yet.  I sure wish now that U.C. would quit messing around & accept me for next year.  When is Melissa coming down?  I wish I could talk to her about going to U.C. next year -- that is if I'm accepted!!

Well, I better study for a while.  Thursday or Friday I'll be sending you all my greetings from California!!!!

1971 Catherine's Letter -Mar.16

 

Tuesday afternoon

March 16, 1971

Dear Mom, Dad, Serena, John, and Mary,

Hi!  Spring was here last weekend but now we're immersed in winter again.  Ugh!

I typed page number 1 of the final copy of my thesis last Wednesday and then after two lines on page 2 the typewriter died.  I was horror stricken, with 1 page done and at least 99 to go what would I do without a typewriter?  But the typewriter refused to do anything.  So I rushed it down to the repair shop and got it brought back to life for $36.00.  It works fine now.

Saturday we went to Ann Burt's wedding which was in a Catholic church here in town.  The caterer was about an hour late coming to the reception but other than that everything went beautifully.

I babysat for the people down the road Saturday night.  I really like the kids and got $10 for playing around with them so it was a well spent evening.

Glad to hear that Roberta got accepted at the Indian place.  Maybe we can stop and see her on the way to Alaska.  Speaking of the future I'm getting really up tight about hearing from Western as it has been almost two months now.

I only have about two more nights work to do at Ambassador.  My speed is up to about 450/hr but I tend to make more careless errors now than I did at a slower rate.

My diet seems to have reached a plateau at the halfway mark.  So I have reapplied and renewed my efforts to get the rest of my fat off.  I guess it takes lots of patience, perseverance, and dedication, not to mention time!

I better get back to typing my thesis before the typewriter does anything else weird!

1981 Roberta's Letter -Mar.13

 

[3/13/81?]

Dear Family,

NOT sure where to start -- will have to wait till you get here to get filled in on all the details --

I've already checked & will get off about a week while you all are here.  It looks like a trip to OHIO is not in the stars.  I've written to Grandma about the idea of her coming again in October.

Sure never thought we would be moving so soon -- but maybe by moving so often it gives us a good reason for sorting out & discarding!!

You all will really like the cabin -- it's in a limited access area -- you have to have a key to get in through a gate.  You have to pay $50 a year Home owners Assn. Dues.  There are 60 cabins in 300 acres.  There is a creek not far from the cabin -- but right now the creek is dry.

The people who sold it to us have 2 other cabins in the same area.  i think they have lots of $$.  They say you can use the cabin year-round.  In the winter using the fire place & elec. heater.  Guess in the summer it gets cool at night up there.  (Take the hint & bring approp. clothing.)

The cabin has a double bed upstairs (sort of a loft) & a couch downstairs that makes into a bed.

I'll send you all a copy of the listing of the house we bought.  It's really a nice place -- tho of course does have its disadvantages -- no garage -- for one!  Also it's a little bit smaller & only one bathroom!!

The house is in great condition -- of course tho we are going to paint it yellow before we move in.  We have it in the contract that we can paint as soon as we get the loan ok'd.

The carpet has a case of the uglies -- combination blue/green shag.  I think I can live with it for awhile!!

We looked at so many places.  Toward the end I couldn't even keep them all straight.  For the same amount of $ the house we got cost -- there was no comparison what we found in town.

The area that we are moving to has alot of new shopping areas about a mile away.

There are no fences in this ara between homes -- some people have chain linked in a portion of their yard -- no doubt for their dear dogs.  It's mostly poodle country out there.

There are several swimming pools -- shuffleboard -- etc. -- Membership is $35 a year -- but you have your choice whether to join or not.  Now -- starting April 31st [sic] -- they want to encourage people to join -- so a new rule is that if you go to sell your house & you aren't a member -- the new owners will have to pay $500 initiation fee!

I need to close & get on the ball -- now Friday AM -- our Easter bazaar is today out at work.  Want to buy some knitted Easter eggs?  Having it early -- so people can buy & mail back to their grand children, etc. --

Will also enclose some other house listings -- that MLS book sure interesting!

1971 Roberta's Letter -Mar.11

 

March 11, 1971

Dear Family,

Hi!  Thanks alot for the letter, check, stamps & newspaper articles today.

After the phone call last night I suppose you all have heard that I was accepted for this summer.  It was sure a surprise to get that news yesterday in the mail.  They are to send me a list of what all I'll need.  I'm wondering if I'll need a sleeping bag -- and what all else.

Pam & Cindie have not been accepted yet.  But I don't think Cindie will go now if she does get accepted.  She wants to go to Scotland next year.

I got a post-card today from Mrs. Schamaun -- from Athens Greece.  Oh brother.

I doubt if I will take the course next term at Portland Community.  I want to -- but I don't specially want to strain my brain.  Also -- though good back-ground I'm not sure if it will transfer.  I am going to keep the text-book as I think it is a good one.

I want to sell some of my textbooks but school's book-store won't buy used books till in May.  Not really sure why.  I will need 4 new books next term.  One for personality, one or two for Speech, one Poetry book for English & also a small hand-book for archery.

Oregon is having RAIN STORMS!!

Don't have any idea who Mrs. Hinshaw's niece is here -- Will have to work on that.

The article of the teen-age Iowa girl as a narcotics agent was very interesting.

In fact, Newberg has had an under-cover cop working with drugs.  Had a raid about a week & a half ago & got 28 arrests of possession & etc.  Was Big News -- on T.V. etc.

John, how is your physical fitness?

I wrote Aunt Mary & all yesterday that I was accepted.  First time I had ever mentioned it to them.

Will see Cindie about her home address.  I want no delay in my mail!!

1971 Catherine's Letter -Mar.8

Monday Morning

March 8, 1971

Dear Mom, Dad, Serena, John, and Mary,

Was glad to get your letter on Saturday and sorry we left so many things in New Vienna.  None were vital -- the only vital things I have are my contacts and my toothbrush (which isn't vital unless I eat something)!

We got back fine after stopping at a McDonalds in Fort Wayne for a little refreshment and then we spent a little while in Sturgis (Mich.) driving around the route where Dick used to be the mailman a couple summers ago.

We have both been working away at our SIP's  I have now finished all the translating and now have the last part to hand into Fugate today.  As soon as he checks it and I correct it I'll be ready to start typing.  Actually I could start typing already since the first half is all ready.  Dick has finished his Introduction and the first section of his paper with a schedule made out so he will get the other five sections done.  I'm hoping to finish mine this week since on the 18th I start working full time at the library.  Dick is only going to work half time.

Mrs. Hall called yesterday and is ready to come down again so we're going up to Clio for her tomorrow.

I have a doctor's appointment at 11:30 this morning so I hope all goes well and I won't have to go see him again soon.  I have been feeling pretty well so . . . .

Then this evening we're going to Flo & Francis's for dinner.  It will be neat to hear all about their Australia trip.

Saturday night we went to the movie "Alex in Wonderland".  It isn't the kind of movie one gets all involved in, but it requires some thought and after I figured that out I enjoyed it.  It's about a movie-director who is trying to figure out what to do his next movie about.  It also deals alot with the problems he has existing with his wife and kids and his mother who pops in once or twice, plus he is trying to decide whether to buy a new house.  I guess you would say it's a movie about a man.

Afterwards I took Dick out for a pizza.  He's not wild about pizza so the only way I can get him to go is if I treat him!  Ha!

March 9, 1971

Dear Family,

Hi!  Just thought I would write a note to tell you that I got an 'A' on my Civilization Book Review!  That means -- that averaged with my 'A' on notebook & 'F' on exam (each are equal grade-wise) I now have a B average.  But of course the (final) exam is coming up!  I just realized this afternoon about my new average.  Too bad I won't be able to keep it very long!!

Heard today from the Hinermans.  They are going back to Glen Dale soon.

Not long now till Spring Vacation.  We will probably be leaving Thursday p.m. for Calif. -- I hope we have no trouble flying student stand-by.  Time will tell.

1981 Family Letter -Mar.8

 

Sunday --

March 8, 1981

Dearest Family --

Catherine, Gerry and Wendy are on their way east as I write this and I do hope their train ride will be a pleasant experience.  They were really looking forward to it and then of course their stay in Maine.  Wish that they had longer but thankful for the few days that we will have with them.  Wish you could all be home at the same time.  If all goes well we will stop in Newark on our way back from picking them up in Cleveland so Carol and John will have a little visit.   I think Elizabeth Johnson may go up with me as Dad would only have one day at Wells otherwise since we are taking off the latter part of the week to go with the Morgans as far as Chicago.  H seems to be enjoying his job as county commissioner but two days a week does eat into his time considerably.  Gee Gee Walker who has been working for him since the middle of January seems to be working out real well as she is most efficient especially with the tax work.

Mary Virginia graduated with her square dance class last Thursday night -- they had a potluck before hand and then dance and awarding of diplomas, etc. later.  Everybody seemed to have a good time.

Last night we went up to Highland as they were having a benefit dance (hoe down square dancing) for the park there.  Even Mie Young got out and danced and thought it was fun but it is much more strenuous than our western style square dancing.  Both are fun but western taxes your mental abilities more as it is continuous and you must listen to the caller.  We took MV, Mie Young, and the Robert Terrells and some young friends of MV and MY met them there.  We won two cakes in the cake walks!

Jane Ann Hause was at church with some boy she introduced as Greg -- who looked quite a bit like her -- some people didn't know she was divorced.  Our Sunday School and Church attendance has been on the upbeat this Spring, we are going to try doing away with opening exercises as an experiment for a month so that there will be more class time.  Once a month they have been having profiles in Sunday School, where they hit the high spots of a person's history and then see who can guess first who it is.

Yesterday was a pallbearer at Virginia Carter's funeral . . . she is the one that sold her house to Elizabeth Johnson thru Dad's contact.  This afternoon we were back in Wilmington for a tea at the hospital in memory of Oscar Hackney, whose county job Dad took.  Mr. Fenwick is getting along fine after his operation.  We also visited with Mrs. Matthews and she always enjoys having items out of the Guidepost magazine read to her.

This evening Tom Salisbury showed a film put out by the Wycliffe Bible Translators on their missionary efforts.  We did have a good turn out and a social hour afterwards.  This morning Tom spoke at a church in Johnstown, Ohio.

Rather, old news, but we did call Chauncey Hinerman on our way back from N.Y.  Said he is staying in West Va. this winter so that he can keep warm, as he has a new furnace in his house.  During our phone conversation he told us about this relative who is head of the Federal Reserve System office in Chicago and how we should look him up, etc. etc., that thought hardly got our metabolism moving any faster.  Anyway, a couple days later Chauncey called both us and John to tell that he had given us the wrong name.

Had a pleasant surprise Wednesday evening when a college friend of your Mother's stopped on their way south from Michigan.  People that you see infrequently seem to age faster than we think we ourselves are (wow, what poor grammar).  Do want to comment that the lady uses "G.G." not Gee Gee in lieu of Geraldine.  We do need some young blood at Wells.

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for the letter today.  Always glad to hear from you all.  I had to buy a new ribbon for my typewriter, the old had-had it -- actually had holes in it!!  Also thanks for the newspaper article about the Hinshaws . . . will have to show it to Cathy Hinshaw, I think I already told you all about her being related to them and all.

The silverware was returned to the school, but was gone for about three or four days.  I'm wondering what will happen next over there -- no telling.

Pam knows a girl that was in the summer program in Canada last year.  We have written her a letter, but have not heard from her yet.  I am sure it is reputable . . . .  I would suggest for you all to write the address of the place.  Which is: North American Indian Mission . . . .

Did I send you all a folder telling a little about it?  I think I have one left but can't seem to find it right now.  I won't need the money until June -- as far as I know now.  We should know in about three weeks or so if we are accepted.  I'm wondering what all I should have to take up there . . . probably very rough clothes.

I did get my term paper done Saturday for History which is almost identical to my one in English . . . was able to write on the same subject for both.  I plan to do my English one tomorrow . . . maybe I'll be able to just get it done tonight, but really doubt it.  All I have to do is type it . . . so I am lucky there.

Had to practically run down to the police station today to get some information I needed -- some books, etc. for criminal investigation.  I have a thing due in class tomorrow night, that class would sure be easy if I had the experience of the others.

My secret brother knew automatically who I was after he got the jack set.  He seemed to appreciate it alot.

I am glad Serena is enjoying wearing the brown outfit, I have alot of other clothes that she could be wearing if I had been smart enough to bring them home at Christmas time.

Just one more week of school now.  Everyone is studying hard now, don't see much use in it myself.  By the way, the March 8th issue of Newsweek has some interesting articles on How Justice Works, perhaps you all might want to look it up.

I'll put in the bill for tuition next term.  How long do you think it will take U.C. to let me know one way or the other?

Dear Groom-to-be,

I was exceedingly sorry to have missed you & the little missus [?] the Sunday you stopped by it happened to be that first Sunday this year I stayed around the Student Union all afternoon talking with friends, etc. and I was thoroughly disgusted with myself for not having come home as I should have.

I suppose that your legal thoughts are those that least occupy your mind nowadays; I imagine that the harmony of wedding bells and love music is the only thing you'll listen to.  Well that's fine, of course, I hate to see our old Triumvirate yield to the appeal of the fair sex this way -- but that's the way life goes.  People just will die & get married!  It was quite a surprise to me that your wedding will be on April 3rd (?) -- especially since I started taking organ sessions in February, being fully assured by Wm. Glenn, my teacher, that I could learn enough in one semester to enable me to play for a wedding in June.  No matter, though; I'm really relieved that I shan't have to play the organ.  I should have taken organ, anyway, sooner or later, and I'm fortunate something happened to force me to start immediately.

It will be fine to meet you in Steubenville, if you'll let me know when you'll be there; I have just one class on Friday afternoon and will gladly skip it for such an important occasion.  You might ask Jean if there's any particular number she'd like to have me play; and if at all possible I'll try to look it up.

How's everything going?  I suppose you're in one grand whirl trying to get everything managed, etc.  Have you found a suitable place to stay in Cleveland?  I presume Jean will continue with her work in the library.  How is school coming along?  Just fine, I hope & trust.  The library work must help you & a car is giving you study time and extra general knowledge about the legal field.

Things seem to be going o.k. for me so far this semester, at least nobody's said anything about throwing  me out yet.  Work is piling up thicker & thicker as the days go by and about Easter time I'll be in up over my ears!  Two English research papers to write (neither of which I've started as yet) among other things.  I've also contracted a new job -- that of geology lab assistant.  The pay is $15 a month -- it's about 7 hours a week more or less.  The duties of this position are, to phrase it briefly, just being general flunky for Mr. Bond, the geology prof.  There are topographic maps to be kept straight, mineral identifications to check, the bulletin board to keep up-to-date, etc.  Then too, I'm to play nursemaid to the little fossils, seeing that no harm comes to them and all that sort of thing.  My schedule of 19 hours for the semester I find increasingly hard to bear and shall possibly have to cut it down to 18 next fall.  Still planning to go to summer school the first six weeks, same as last summer.

I haven't been home much since the interim between semesters; I did go home last weekend, however, because [indecipherable: looks like ???ther] was sort of "homesick", I think for home coming the last crucial games of the tournament, but couldn't go because there were no more seats available -- all sold out long since.  So I had to hear the great report second-hand -- that N.V. -- dear old N.V. is the Clinton County champ. of 1948, for the first time since '27, someone said.  Everybody is pretty much elated about the fact,  I guess.

Well, it appears that it's about time for my Sunday evening repast, so I'll close more with the hope that I hear from you soon & find out any of Jean's or your - preferences for music at your wedding.  Hope things are just peachy, remember to enjoy this as much as possible -- it's one thing in your life that'll never happen again!  Congratulations, old boy.  I'll be seeing you.

[Dear Serena,]

Thought you might be interested in seeing this clipping from the Wilmington News Journal last Monday night.  Quite a few people have commented they saw it; I'm not sure that the New Vienna Girl Scouts are active now although someone was around selling cookies the latter part of January so I hope so.

We met the Goodings last Sunday and went down to Murphin Ridge for dinner.  The weather turned very icy that afternoon and super slick that night.  There was no school on Monday.  I talked to Beverly this morning and she had worried about getting to work on Monday but said from Wilmington on the roads were clear.

The Goodings are talking about getting tickets for themselves and Lisa for a play to be given at the Murphy on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 5th and 6th.  It is written by Gary Kersey, a Wilmington teacher and a great Lincoln scholar.  He spoke at Gettysburg recently on some phase of Lincoln's life.

I do hope that you are planning to come home for Easter or the following weekend.  I am sure that the Crowsons won't be able to come that busy weekend.  We are planning to go see them this Saturday and Sunday.  We hadn't heard when you might be going but also want to see you soon too.  We haven't seen Mary Virginia and Don since the Saturday after Christmas.  Roberta is coming into Columbus on March 20 and John may meet us then so whatever you can work out about coming here or us going there would be fine.  Roberta will be here Palm Sunday.

Things are quiet in New Vienna (unusual?).  We do have flags up downtown and trees draped with orange ribbons.  They had a special service one night while we were gone and heard it was very nice -- Ed Johnson spoke.

I am gradually getting used to this typewriter but still have a few things to work out yet, like margins and what causes the skipping of spaces when I don't want to.

Dad went to the school today to speak to the third and fourth graders about his bike trip.  Josephine Harner talked to the first and second graders.  I would have like to attend to hear them both.  Dad said the fourth graders' geography was much better than the 3rd.  He even asked them the state capitols (back to his old tricks).

We saw the Richard Haines at the Hillsboro play, "The Belle of Amherst" which was an excellent one-woman cast.  They are looking for Debbie and her family down soon.

Grandma is holding her own, tho she sleeps a lot, but her appetite is excellent.  They told us at the nursing home that they have a wait list of 75 people.  The real advantage of having her there is that the doctor does make calls.

Dear Grandma & Grandpa,

How are you?  I'm doing wonderful.  School is great.  My grades are good and I'm still a Student Aide in the library.  My slumber party was lots of fun.  Right now in school I'm in Spanish.  But I won't learn a whole lot cause I'm only in for six weeks.  We are also doing Science Projects.  My partners name is Machelle Janson.  We are doing How Lights Affect the Growth of Plants.  The Science Fair is March 14.  So about a week left.  

I'm sorry I haven't written for so long.  I'm just a very busy person.  Have you seen any good movies lately?  I've been sick lately with a really bad cold.  I've had it since early February.  I stayed home from school two days this week, but Mom took me to the doctor yesterday.  And I guess I'm on the road to recovery.  Well I'm going to say goodbye now.  So goodbye.

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for the letter & pills -- I got them yesterday.  Pills came through fine!

Yesterday I went to Portland with Cindie -- we rode in with one of my teachers that was going in.  We had to go to Portland County Library.  Going to make use of that $3.00 card!! Have been studying today & hope to finish (100%) my English term paper today.

Also yesterday bought myself a pair of brown corduroy slacks & top in Portland.  Somehow I'm not too fond of bended [?] pants I got over Christmas.  You would have to see them to understand.  That bended stuff is all messed up!  Any trouble with Mary Virginia's bended pants?

Called up air-lines -- prices have gone up & not as many flights now.  OH. Brother!

I'm all signed up for Spring term -- taking English, Civilization, Personality, Fund. of Speech & archery.

No word yet from summer idea & U.C.  Sure am anxious about both!  Please tell Rev. Lynd thank you for me.  (for references)

Well, I hope you all are fine.  Got letter today from Aunt Mary.  Hope you all have sent me you-know what (money) not sure yet when we'll be leaving -- want to leave early so no trouble flying youth fare.

Dear Mom & Dad,

It was good to talk to you last Friday.  I'm glad you had a good trip and I'm glad you are back safely.

Julie & I had a good weekend together.  We registered for wedding gifts at Lazarus -- they should carry our registration at all Lazarus stores -- Cincinnati & Dayton.  Julie's mom offered to address the invitations which was very kind of her.  She enjoys that I believe.

Dad, I hope you don't mind, but I've attached a copy of the lease Gail and Anita Wolfe would like to use to rent their house to us at 912 W. Church St.  I could take possession April 1st for a one year lease.  If you get a chance to look it over, I'll be calling you Friday evening or Sat. or Sunday afternoon to see what you think.

How is Grandma doing?  Keep me posted as I want to pray.  I am looking forward to seeing you March 20, sometime after 5:45 PM?

Dear Mother & Dad,

Hi!  Winter seems to be over here.  I got a little sunburn on Sunday and the grass needs mowing.  Our nectarine tree is blooming -- maybe we'll see some fruit this year!

Wendy has a bad cold.  I'm going to see about getting her into the Dr. as she's had it for weeks.  Her tonsils are swollen also.

Thanks again for the loan.  It really helped us out in getting the business off the ground.

Thanks for the check for the tickets also.  We're looking forward to being there in May.

[March 1981]

Hi!  Sure good to hear directly from you all -- instead of just the capsule full in the folks letters!!  Sure was surprised about the new addition in the family -- I would have sent you all Buffy -- the next pet I have is going to be a gold fish!

Before I forget -- the lady on Church Street -- JoAnne Caldwell -- she would love to see you both.  Really was quite a character!  Let me know if & what happens when you go to see her!  

Have you met any of your neighbors?

Did you hear the area we are moving into is a Retirement area -- where 1 has to be 45 (Marian just qualifies!) & no-one under 18.  I'm glad NOT to have a bunch of kids roaming around!

Sending you all some pictures -- should recognize the people -- we've been cleaning out drawers.  My!  What a job!  Please keep the pictures of recycle them --

We are going to a practice game today -- Oakland & Chicago Cubs.  The best part of the game is the ice cream sandwiches!

Dear Mother, Dad, and Mary,

Hi!  Well, we are down to our last few days before we take off on vacation and they should go quickly.  We have the evenings all planned full of things we need to do before we leave.

The weather has been really nice -- very springlike and we have a few flowers blooming.  The tulips are up about 2 inches and the rhubarb maybe ½ inch.  I'll have to talk to you about what I should do with it this year.  Aren't you supposed to let it go for a few years or something?

We have been thinking about what we might like to do while in New Vienna.  It might be nice to see Elizabeth if she is going to be around and maybe Ruth Shoemaker since she has always been so nice to us sending cards, etc.  Other than that I can't really think of anything.

We had a lunch-party last week for Debbie the girl who is pregnant and Thursday was her last day of work.  The other two girls and I went together and bought her a babybook.  The new Debbie worked two days last week and starts full time this week.  Dr. Woll is taking vacation next week so the office will only be open one week while I am gone.  Teresa who had the job before me will be working them.

Time to get Wendy ready for school so I better close.  See you soon!

March 1, 1971

Dear Family,

Thanks alot for the letter and the stamps yesterday.  I appreciate both of them.  Hope you all are all right.  Mary Virginia how do you feel now???  Hope you feel alot better.

Also nice to talk to you Sunday.  How long did Catherine and Dick get to stay in New Vienna?  I take it from your letter that Catherine will be staying in the dorm next term and will be taking classes or what?

I am about half done with registering.  I am planning on taking English, Civilizations, Personality, Fund. of Speech, Archery, and I think that is all.  I'm not too sure about that Civilizations.  But, I can't take U.S. History because I want to take Personality and they meet at the same time.  So . . . .  Also sort of dreading that speech class, but I think I would rather have it here than at U.C. -- if I do go there.  It is required at U.C.

I am not to hear from the Indian Mission thing in Canada until the end of this month.  That will mean after Spring Vacation.  Shoot!!  Wish I could find out earlier.  I haven't told anyone about my applying -- that is until I am accepted or . . . .

Starting next week Criminal Investigation is to meet on both Tuesday and Thursday, don't really know why either.  I am going to have to tell the teacher that I can't be up there both evenings . . . that is unless I really get alot done this week-end.  Doubt if that will happen because there are about six of us that are planning on going into Portland and getting some stuff from the Portland Library.  We went together about a week or two ago and bought us a $3.00 library card.  Portland does have a pretty nice library, old but nice.

Also had alot of reading material from Aunt Mary yesterday.  Suppose you all got a copy of it all too.  Today I got the Church news letter.  I can't believe that there are only some two weeks left in this term.  Sure hope Spring term goes fast.

Julie Z. dropped out of school yesterday.  I think she is a little (?) crazy . . . .  Jut didn't want to go another two weeks . . . or so she said.

Well, can't think of anything else to write.  Do hope you all send me some money to spend in California -- for I will sure need some bad, unless my income tax money comes in or the bank makes a mistake and puts $150 extra (just a figure) in my saving account.  Well nice to have a wide carriage on the typewriter . . .

Sunday evening --

March 1, 1981

Dearest Family,

Doesn't seem so long since we last wrote but another week has gone by and if we don't get this out soon the Morgans will be on their way east and we have no Maine address for them.

Glad to talk to you girls on the phone this past weekend -- Mary Virginia appreciated your cards and calls  -- sorry that she missed you calling her, Roberta, but she got the message asking whether it was her 15th or16th birthday.  She did have a full day yesterday.  She gave the Earnhart girls their piano lessons and then her group came to practice as they were singing for the senior citizens luncheon at the Lions Club at noon.  That group plus a couple of others came for a birthday bash here -- she had fixed lasagna and a big salad which they had with birthday cake and then most of them left and she and some others went over to the church to sing for the Community Church program held at our church last night.  Mary Virginia sang accompanied by Tim Larrick.  The same two had gone to entertain the February Birthday Party at Prairie View apartments in Wilmington Thursday night so she is getting plenty of exposure singing.

MV did get one of the things she had on her Christmas list -- her hope chest.  (The other thing she wanted but will wait a much longer time to get is a baby grand piano.)  She seemed really pleased with it.  She also got a sweat suit as she is going out for track this spring -- in fact she starts tomorrow.  Dr. Nathan Hale had recommended it some time ago and so she will be busy every afternoon after school for a couple of months at least.

Dad went to Columbus and stayed at the new Hyatt there where the Commissioners were having a meeting especially for the new ones.  He seemed to enjoy it -- went up Wednesday evening and back Thursday -- he came back early as he was having problems with a tooth.  Dr. Hause was able to fix it so he is feeling much better now.  I had thought about going but had several complications.  (Dave Bailey took his family).  We had people coming to lay the carpet in the living room - dining room & hall.  They were to be here early Wed. AM but that is another LONG story.  They did finish by dinner time Wed. night but there were a lot of things to put back -- especially in the dining room cupboards, buffet, etc.

East Clinton held their annual open house on Thursday evening and we rushed to get to both MV and Mie Young's classes -- thank goodness two were the same and MY had two study halls but MV has something every period.  (We were to go through their daily schedule.  Also got to pick up their report cards.)  Mie Young has done real well in her subjects and all the teachers had good things to say about her as well as Mary Virginia.  Her English course in Short Story and American History give her more anxiety as she feels her reading comprehension isn't too fast -- hate to think what mine would be like there in Korea.

Fredia Mahanes passed away Wednesday -- they found she had cancer just after Christmas.  She had spent so many years taking care of their son and he passed away about 5 years ago -- she was only 58.

We stopped at the funeral home to see Mrs. Henry Kibler tonight -- she used to live caddy-corner from us where the Davisons live now.  We saw her nephew who is a little older than John -- remember he used to take the News Journals out of the special box we kept in front of the house for customers that picked up their papers there.  He is 24 just married last summer and is in the Navy located just south of Norfolk.

I went to a luncheon Friday at Jeanne Sankers -- all those invited had the first name of Jean or Jeanne so it wasn't too hard to remember the first names.  The invitations and whole theme she carried out was real clever.  She did have three geniuses of song there to entertain us with songs including "Jean, Jean" from Brigadoon.  Jeanne Sanker accompanied one who had a lovely voice and two played a number of duets.  There were thirteen Jean(ne)s, the geniuses of music were 2 Judys and an Amy.  As we left for home she handed each one of us a gift which turned out to be a bottle of Jean Nate something or other -- at least mine was body freshener.

I stopped at Velva Sheen and they were having a half price sale on any printed articles -- MV wanted a sweat suit but of course they didn't have any of those with a name.  Since I hadn't had any requests from any one I didn't buy much but wish I had and was tempted to go back on Saturday but of course didn't.

We were invited to our square dance caller's wedding on Saturday -- they were too be married in the Aley Methodist Church in Beavercreek followed by a square dance -- a number of our club went including the Harners who invited us to go with them but Dad already had some appointments so am anxious to hear more about it.  (I don't want to wait until April 4th before beginning to think about tax returns).

Today we went over to the Golden Lamb for dinner at 2 P.M. as we had a gift certificate (some of my clients really surprise me the right way) there and with the two girls birthday it was a special occasion. Came back thru Wilmington and went to a movie "special" that one of the Churches was having and also made a stop at the hospital, Extended Care and oh yes, at United Dairy for an ice cream cone (special at 29¢ a dip).

Last Monday night was our Clinton Co. Lincoln Day Dinner -- 270 were there and we even made a little money.  Ashbrook told me the Bank wanted to get that promising John Uible on their staff.  (For the rest of the family that is the 2nd Bd. member of the bank that I have talked with in unusual circumstances).  CCNB has sent out notices that they will no longer have any special checking accounts.  Its either at least $200 balance or $2.00 a month service charge.  Carol, how is your Great Dane dog, or was it John's idea to get the dog?  Isn't the reason that a dog is one's best friend is because they can not talk back???

Serena, we were surprised to hear about your going back to work for the employment services, tho while you are young is certainly the time to have a variety of jobs and experiences.  That is one of the joys of the law practice is that there is plenty of variety.  In the toy business customers always want to buy things for less, while the costs of things keep going UP.  It doesn't make sense that one can make more by investing money in money market certificates than one can in business and take the risks beside of losing everything.  

Mother, if it fits your plans we will leave NV on 4/16 , arrive in Statesville on 4/17 (with a night in TN.) and return back to N.V. on 4/18.  If the earlier weekend is more convenient with the Hortons do let us know, and we would stay overnight on 4/11.  Yes, the two girls will be coming with us.  Roberta "talked" about flying over to N.C but the cost was the anti clincher.

Friday noon Dave Bailey and I drove down to Blanchester to have lunch with the Sr. Citizens there . . . it's amazing that the gov't isn't worse off subsidizing the so called 60¢ lunch  -- lunch, plus everything from A to Z.  This county job is an experience and fortunately a congenial group.  Bert, being here in person makes me appreciate your "opportunities" more.  This week is both the dog pound and the infirmary on the schedule.

Maple syrup crop is low this year as it has warmed up and few freezes since the middle of February.  Hope to get some peas planted soon.

1971 Roberta's Letter -Feb27

 

Feb 27, 1971

Dear Family,

Hi!  Today was the "Law & Society" Forum at school.  I did go.  It was very interesting.  I liked the panels the best that were after the main speakers.  The "big" speakers were ok but the panels were alot more exciting.  On the panel this morning 3 out of 4 of the people came from the East.  That makes alot of the people from Oregon & other states around here upset.

I got  2  letters today from Florida.  One letter from Mrs. Hinerman and the other from Grandma.  Hinermans must live near West Palm, as their letter was marked like Grandma's "West Palm Beach Greater Area".  Something like Stuart Florida.  I'll have to get my atlas out!

Mrs. Hinerman said they didn't get your letter about meeting in the Bahama's until the last day of you all being over there.  She did say she was going to write you all because of someone's son she knows that lives in South Africa.  Guess he is in the Army -- but an officer or something.  

Grandma really didn't have alot to say except that she had tried to make a doctor's appointment & Aunt Mary called up some doctor and the secretary said that Grandma would have to pay $25.00 for nothing just because she would be a new patient.  How pitiful!!!  Well, guess she didn't go! (don't know how long ago this was -- maybe you all already have heard about it from her.)

I was wrong about the snow not sticking.  In fact, got up this morning and there was something between 3-5 inches of snow on the ground.  Still not too cold though.  I think about 35º.  I have heard that there is alot more snow other places in Oregon & Washington -- especially bad around & in the mountain passes.  Is it still snowing in Ohio?

I just hope it is nice weather in about two & a half weeks when we will be on our way to California.  Um -- guess it is a bit longer than that.  But I do hope we have good weather.

I do hope you have sent my medicine.  Also still wondering what you all think of that Indian program this summer.

Mary Virginia, how does it feel to be seven years old?  You'll be seven years & a couple of days old by the time you get this letter.

I think I did pretty good on my History test yesterday.  I sure hope so.  I've got to kill that F in Civilization somehow.

Oh, Julie Wiget called me up Thursday night.  But I was gone -- Criminal Investigation.  I did call her back yesterday morning.  Rates -- at least by pay phone have gone up from $1.20 to $1.65 for the first three minutes.  And this was at 3:30 in the morning!

Well, I better go.  Want to write Grandma before the mail goes out today.

Dear Aunt Roberta,

How are you?  I am doing wonderful.  Besides the fact that I am sick.  Thank you for the nice get well card I appreciated it very much.

Have you rad any good books lately?  I just finished The Bad Place by Dean Koontz.  Have you seen any good movies?  I haven't really seen any movies except for King Ralph a couple of weeks ago.  How is Beethoven doing?

Worry to tell you this But you can't come to the Science Fair -- it's parents only.  

I was sick again today.  I would have called you but I wouldn't want to inconvenience you.  Well, I must say Goodbye.
