Crusading Women of New Vienna
Actually went back to the website and did some more looking around. I did find out more about the issue of temperance movement from which the above was taken. Here is the link to the Ohio page - you can then go down to Clinton County and click on that which then has the piece about New Vienna. Someone has done a transcript of Henry Howe's 18__ something book.

Label Counts
Don't know if anyone else has noticed that Serena seems to have very few labels that actually refer to herself! Also noticed a new show on HGTV that premiered Monday called "Life With Ed"...reminds me of some lessons we learned growing up in New Vienna.

Bedtime in Glendale
The Suns game is almost over and tomorrow is an 8-5 day for me so almost bedtime. Had a good lunch today with Wendy, KC, Mom & Dad, Gerry's folks and us at Sweet Tomatoes. KC, looking as cute as ever, is thriving, and now 3 weeks and 3 days old! Didn't see Rose Mofford -- former governor of AZ -- but it is the same place where we have seen her in the past. How's the house-sitting going, Serena? Happy Anniversary, Roberta & Sid. Happy New Year's Eve weekend everyone!

Serena allows me back on the blog
For those of you who are interested I have been reading and looking at the pictures, but have been unable to post until Serena fixed my computer, again!
I did want to report in this day after Christmas about the gift that Serena gave us on Christmas day.....that of the most excellent Christmas brunch for us and about 20 of our closest family and friends! I can't begin to tell you how many different dishes there were, but I will say that we had about 8 of the items leftover tonight!
Will look forward to hearing from all both on the local scene and from afar!

Merry Christmas!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
The cinnamon rolls are rising. The bedroom is clean - but, no, Mother, you may NOT check under the beds, and the closet . . . well, one can walk through it . . . at least skinny cat can - fat cat might with some difficulty.
The black bean hummus is made - although I forgot that instead of a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper as called for in the recipe I always used just a half pinch. I think nobody will eat it and if they do, the smoke coming out of their ears will be a give away. The quiche and pumpkin pies need to get into production. The veggies are chopped. The Thanksgiving bread with cranberries, dates and raisins is edible according to expert Roberta. Still got a couple more kinds of bread I'm going to make, but those are the easy kind.
Well, got work to do . . . and time is wasting. Just wanted to wish everyone a very

Christmas Eve in Glendale
The soup is made thanks to Gerry, and Dad Morgan has been out for his daily walk. Now we await the arrival of the younger and youngest generation -- Wendy, Ken & KC -- with Mom & Dad, Serena, Roberta & Sid following close behind. Actually have my 3 presents wrapped. Only thing remaining is to sign the card for Wendy & Ken and get the baby announcements ready for those who I haven't already distributed. Still have some cards I could send out also, but I've answered all the ones we have received. Merry Christmas to all!

Mary VA's recital
At the Airport
I don't when this picture was taken. I also don't know for certain that it was taken at the airport or that Grandma is the one traveling, but that makes sense from looking at the photograph.
"The picture in question [which is below] was from the Williamsburg 50th anniversary [1998] trip. The hotel provided the bathrobes and Dad was opening one of the gifts; Ginny, ever the patient and loving granddaughter was trying to assist and speed up the show." quote from Mary Virginia herself.

Lucie Brown Ballantyne's cookbook
I have Grandma Ballantyne's cookbook (from some 80 years ago) in her own handwriting, although I'm guessing that some recipes were written by someone else (like the recipe on the left above). Anyway, I thought I would scan the recipes in like the above - the facing pages which would make the scanning twice as fast as one at a time. Then make CDs for all who are interested.
If anyone has any suggestions, etc., let me know. If Mother has something to say about a recipe, we could include that, too, I think; although exact format would be determined based on numerous variables.
Comments?
Click on the photo if you want to see the recipe pages life-size.
Back from surgery
Christian had 4 (more) teeth pulled this morning; we were in Macon at 7:15 and back home by 10AM this morning. I'm ready for a nap! Now he is relaxing in front of the TV and sipping a chocolate milkshake in honor of his Grandma Uible.
His "Grandmommie" Crowson has been in the hospital this week recovering from an extremely severe ear infection. She is supposed to go home today.
Glad to hear HH and Luscious made it to SCW in perfect timing....anxious to hear where the stops were along the way as well as how the visit with the Fosters were. Ginny and Christian are officially out of school for Christmas. Last night we took a group caroling to shut-ins on our new bus---never thought I'd be riding a bus to go Christmas caroling!

Here in SCW
Mom and Dad have arrived in SCW. We went to Luby's for dinner. Dad had the vegetable plate, Mother had tilapia and soup. I had the liver and onions. Mother ran out of space for the soup, but did find some room for some chocolate cake - which we split three ways and brought some home, too.
Everything is going well here.

New Equipment
Has anyone purchased one of the new DVD/VCR gadgets that will play either AND burn the contents of the VCR onto the DVD (and vice versa)? Got one for the church last week only to realize the TV I have in the choir room is so old I couldn't hook it up...so I brought it home tonight and fiddled with it nearly an hour until I finally got it to do what I need it to. Only disadvantage is that you have to play it in "real time", which means a 60 minute video takes 1 hour to burn on to DVD. Tomorrow I can take it to the church and copy the DVD through another gadget that not only burns the DVD/VCRs but will also print labels on them. Who would have ever thought....
We did receive the picture of KC today along with nice note from the happy Grandma :) which we were glad to see. Seems like yesterday my kids were that age! Where did the time go? They will be 1/2 way through 3rd, 9th grade as of tomorrow! Ginny was very excited to get the note from the school about driver's ed next summer. Surely not already!

What's Happening
The King Christmas mailing list is almost completely finished. I went through last night and alphabetized it and checked it against all the various other lists to make sure that nobody was left off that was on one of the other lists and now I'm cleaning up - adding a few zip codes and checking a few minor details. THAT is the big news here. There are still a few things to do before the mailing list goes out. We're missing a few addresses - including Wendy Jean's address, the photo copied at Costco (of course), the actual photocopying of the letter, the border around the letter itself . . . Okay, a few details, but the worst is over . . . the letter itself is done as is the mailing list (well almost).
Talked to Roberta to confirm April dates. I tried calling the JJKA group, but, of course, there was no answer. Called Catherine at work and she confirmed and she had confirmed with Dad that yes those were the specific dates. So Roberta is now making definite plans and those April dates are the dates . . . no matter what.
Sid, Gerry, Catherine, Ken, Wendy Jean, KC and various other Counts, Jones and Morgans enjoyed a very pleasant evening last night celebrating Gerry's birthday at Fontanella. The food was great, too.
Well, more later . . . gotta get back to the mailing list.

Happy Birthday Gerry!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GERRY!
I'm posting my favorite photograph of Gerry today in honor of his birthday.
Catherine, Gerry and his parents are picking up Sid and me this afternoon. We're all looking forward to celebrating Gerry's birthday. I think Sid is particularly looking forward to not having to eat my cooking.

Gerry's Parents Arrive In Glendale
Gerry's parents, Mavis and Lester, flew from Manchester NH to Phoenix today and we picked them up at the airport mid-afternoon. They are both doing well and were happy to stop and visit their newest great-grandchild. KC is their 9th great-grandchild so they are experienced! This picture was taken in 2005 with Dee's son, their great-grandson Jonathan.
Lunch with Ardyth
Gerry and I had lunch today with Ardyth, my friend from the Bicycle hosteling trip in 1968. She now has a daughter a year younger than Wendy living in Phoenix and came to visit her for the holidays. We have seen each other maybe half a dozen times in those 38 years -- the most famous of which was the trip we made from New Vienna to California together in 1969 in her red VW beetle. She now works as an R.N. for a blood bank in Humbolt County (far north-western) California. I could include a picture of the two of us on that trip BUT first I would have to read the article Serena gave me about printer/scanners, then I would have to go buy one, hook it up and scan the picture. Not going to happen this week! Thanks for the birthday/email greetings for Gerry, Roberta! See you at the airport, Monday evening.

greetings from a computer that I am not "supposed" to be using
Just a quick note to say that I am now caught up with the blog.....hope to get Aunt Mary on it tomorrow to look at the pictures, especially the ones of KC! Way cute.......
Mary Virginia, I do remember Leah! Do give more details! I talked with Dad last night, they were in Galveston and headed to the SAS shoe store. I put in my order for the SAS that are Birkenstock look-alikes. We had several site-seeing trip, so tonight Aunt Mary did not want to go to the dining room. I brought in Burger King complete with milk shake which she ate every ounces of her meal and shake. Her biggest problem is her feet which seem to freeze every time they are expected to move, as in getting her in the car or on the toilet. Creates challenges.....
More later.....I cannot find the folks email.....did do some research on rooms and found the Comfort Inn to be by far the most reasonable. The Breakers was over $1000 per night per room. Would make a cruise seem cheap. Serena, could you show this to Sid please.
Little more rain today, but the 8 inches yesterday was still apparent today! Love to all, Roberta

from KY
I am on my way to Lexington and spent the night in Somerset with Rudy and Susan (many of you remember the paramedic guy). Visitation tonight, funeral tomorrow for my friend Leah Davis who died of cancer Wednesday. We met at Seminary and she was a fellow music major and played piano for me whenever I sang, including the Master's Recital nearly 20 years ago. Should be back in Dublin late Saturday night. Anyone heard from HH and Luscious? Last time I spoke to them was Tuesday. Just wondering where/how they are doing....

KC sleeping, about to get his diaper changed. One of the few things that wakes him up. He's a good sleeper and eater and a very good baby! I'm thoroughly enjoying motherhood. It would be nice to get as much sleep as he does but being tired is worth it.
It worked
Thanks Serena
I have been lurking since I had forgot how to post.....how about everyone else??? I am off to Florida and will be doing some research for the reunion.....stay tuned! And feel free to post.....I do lurk often! Love to all.............

Persian Garden CafĂ© Restaurant – Middle Eastern Food – Organic and Healthy
This is where Gerry, Catherine and I ate yesterday. There is a link for the menu. Catherine's favorite - which she ordered - is the Spinach burger. (I did try it and it was excellent.) Gerry ordered his usual - Mexican gyros or something like that.

the silent one
Just to let everyone know that I am often lurking to see what others that are more vocal....or rather more written than I have to say......
I can't wait to see pictures of KC with his parents.....we are disappointed that we cannot see him (and his parents) today, but I am sure that is pale compared to how Wendy and Ken feel about NOT being able to take him home today! More later.....love to all, Roberta

Kenneth Charles Counts III and Wendy Jean Morgan
This picture was taken shortly after the birth. I saw them this afternoon at the hospital. They are in the pediatric wing because the OB area is full up. Wendy seemed quite happy with everything, except the food, but very happy otherwise. The baby may be big for his age, but he still looks pretty small. Certainly the smallest baby I've ever seen that I was related to.
Wendy, Ken, Gerry and Catherine seemed quite tired, but very happy with the outcome.
After all that celebratory stuff, Catherine, Gerry and I went to Catherine's favorite restaurant - Persian Gardens - and we had a fine mostly vegetarian meal. Then back to SCW.
No picture, but we do have news and a few details.
Kenneth Charles Counts III was born at 9:38 p.m., December 5, 2006.
He weighs 9 pounds, 1 ounce.
He is 21.5 inches long - which is long for a baby, or so I hear.
I heard him gurgle and he sounded fine. His grandmother sounded fine, although tired.
I forgot to ask about the mother and father, but I'm sure they are happy with the result, although tired.
I'm sure Catherine will follow with details.

Big NEWS!
The big news is that there is no news yet. Wendy Jean is in labor. They are guessing 2-4 hours, I think. That is the last I heard. We'll post as soon as we know . . . and when we have an Internet connection. Will also post a photograph of someone today. If KCC3 is not available, we may have to dig through the box and find another photograph of Roberta.

Arrival here in Dublin
We are glad to report that the new carpet is down and we are thrilled with the change---next best thing to getting a new house! We are hoping for news of THE arrival from Catherine soon. Never thought I'd be calling Catherine Grandma but then again, I never thought I'd have a daughter in high school!
For the record, MOM AND DAD, your suite is ready and we'll be expecting you at your earliest convenience Friday afternoon.

More Waiting
Wendy got up extremely early this morning, showered and was preparing to go to the hospital at about 4am when the hospital called her and told her they were full! Therefore her instructions were to call back at 8:00. At that hour they were still full but in the meanwhile she is feeling some pain, possibly the beginning of contractions. As it stands now she is to wait until she definitely has contractions at regular 4-5 minute intervals, her water breaks or until the hospital calls her. So possibly KC will yet be born today but could also be tomorrow or even the next day....

12834 Ballad
Just a quick note before we leave again......for Luby's.....you know we are used to fine dining now! Had a wonderful trip and a very uneventful trip back home.....to a much cleaner home than we left thanks to Serena!
Our bed, meaning the mattress..... got flipped which is the first for that unless it happened by mistake when we moved!
We are ready to cruise again! Had a card from the Delta Queen folks, they must have forgot how they treated us this last year when our cruise was cancelled by them! More later, just tried to call the folks, but with no success! Can't wait to be a great aunt, does that make me old? Roberta the blogger is back on the keyboard.....at 50 cents a minute I did my best to keep Sid off the floor that had the computers!

No Baby Yet
I'm not at the hospital. Plan on getting up at 3:30 to be at the hospital by 4:30. Kind of feels like I'm going on a trip. And a way I guess I am but this trip will never end!
Catherine Uible Morgan and Wendy Jean Morgan
I ran across this photo of mother and daughter - I think it was the one that Catherine had requested that I post on the blog.
This was a photo taken shortly before the famous trip Wendy Jean, her great-grandmother and I took across Canada. The assumption is that the photo was taken in the Morgan Oregon house - but Catherine didn't seem TOO sure. Anyway, the trip was when Wendy Jean was 6 (and her great grandmother was 92 or 94), so it was 23 years ago. (That was also the trip that Mary Virginia was originally supposed to go on, but she begged off because of a summer supervisory job at the Wilmington YMCA. Grandma had already told Roberta that now that she was married, she should stay home and take care of her husband instead of gallivanting around the country.)
Speaking of WENDY JEAN . . . Catherine didn't answer her phone when I called her about 3 p.m. and she hasn't called back, so I'm assuming that they have gone to the hospital. (When I talked to her about 1:00, they were waiting for the call.) In some ways this time would probably be less convenient as if it takes a while for KC3 to make an actual appearance, it could be a late night. On the other hand, 4:30 a.m. is rather early, even for early risers like the Morgans.

Yoo-Hoo---Anyone Home?
Awhile since the last blog and ready for some new news---anything from the Kings return to a new picture from Serena to KCC's arrival. I'm sure Serena and RUK will be glad to post pictures of the newest arrival.
Ginny and I returned from the seminar thing in Atlanta. I liked it except the music was so loud that my chest rattled and when I sat down, the seat vibrated!! If we end up going back next year I will definitely take ear plugs.
This past week Ginny and I watched "Meet Me in St. Louis" and when they manually turned out each light bulb, I couldn't help but remember G'ma Uible saying "DIE THE LIGHT!". Right now we're watching "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".
