Friday 1993 - [to Cleveland]  Another McKay hearing, the wind-up unless appealed.  Drove to Cleveland for Family Life Conference at Sheraton Hotel.  $69/night, tax was additional $10 plus $4 for parking.  It was a great experience, theme was on "oneness".

Sunday 1995 - We went to Milford for UMC Vision 2000 program, then to Micro Mall, got new monitor, then met Serena at Borders Book Store.  Went to White House for supper but too long a wait so went to Windjammer, where there was no crowd and used entertainment card for first time.  They had a $8.95 early bird special.  News is still focusing on the Oklahoma City explosions [April 19, 1995].

Tuesday 1996 - John, Julie and Kate left about 10.  Went to Hillsboro, title job for Roger Acher, then in afternoon to WCH for Howland.  Learned how to replace words on computer, i.e. change all "us" to "we" etc.  Picked a bunch of rhubarb for John and Julie.

Wednesday 1997 - [Williamsburg VA]  Walked around Williamsburg and made reservations to eat at the Williamsburg Lodge for supper that night.  One of the gals at the Williamsburg Inn showed us their fancy restaurant.  Had breakfast in the Cascades, see why it is rated just 1 star.

Thursday 1998 - Got haircut at Greg's, $7.  Jean worked at Senior Citizens.  Mary K. is now head cook.  Got ABA entertainment form.  DuPont raised their dividend.  More rain.  Went for physical, got pneumonia and tetanus shots, boy, was my arm sore.

Friday 1999 -  Jean went to garden place between here and Hillsboro, couldn't get it all in the car, the big tomato plants are $2.99 or 3 for $7.  Put the flowers out in the flower bed, plus marigolds in the garden area.   Roberta said she has been accepted for Ragbrai this July.  Jean got a loaf of Ezekiel 4:9 break for $3.29/loaf.  Found out part of roof on 2-story part of Wells had blown off.  WSJ had interesting article on a $500 room at 10 different hotels in the US, really liked the Four Seasons in Chicago, but down on Opryland Hotel with a Murphy pull down bed.

Tuesday 1994 - [Salisbury to Gatwick England] Went to Longleat House, had wheel chair available and a lift so were able to see the whole house.  Also an electric cart for touring the grounds -- tight corners on some of the buildings, even took a boat ride.  Then drove through the extensive safari animal area.  Had reservations at the Gatwick Hilton and they had a wheel chair.  Room had 3 phones.

Thursday 1991 - [Baltimore MD]  Had nice breakfast conversation with an English couple.  Visited Lovely Lane UMC and Museum, the Mother Church of Methodism.  Then to B&O Railroad Museum, quite a collection of engines in the roundhouse.  Had nice lunch at the Brass Elephant, 924 N. Charles [closed in August 2009], then drove to York PA, visited the McCrory headquarters and store [all McCrory stores out of business by 2002], China outlet and the York Galleria Mall which is one year old.  Got on the wrong road en route here but have very nice room at Days Inn.  Went to open house suite -- what a layout, then grocery store for breakfast provisions.

Saturday 1992 - Met the three Hughes' (Fred and Gwen's sons) boys at their late Mother's home and divided things up.  It went better than I expected.  Went to see GHU -- she was very sleepy but ate pretty well.  Then we drove to Hamilton to see Serena, looked around Oxford and then had supper at Jakes.  I had a heavy gumbo soup for $11.95, pretty hot.  We saw where Mary Ellen K. (Mrs. Hadley's daughter) lived, also Serena's apartment.  Serena looks good.  Florence and Paul Christy now at Heartland.

Sunday 1993 - Mother complaining of her back more.  She drinks her 2 glasses of milk but not much else.  She loves the strawberries though.  More rain.

Thursday 1996 - Lilacs showing white blossoms.  Long Leadership Clinton meeting, everyone wants things done, but no one wants to do it.  Lock box opening on Richard Dailey.  Roberta called.

Friday 1997 - Bar Meeting in Middletown, went with Gano and Bill McCracken.  Gano's getting a new van.  Sat next to Mike Dougherty, a new attorney with Legal Aid.  He wants to open an office of his own.  What a mix up on meeting Terrells in New Vienna rather than Wilmington.

Saturday 1998 - [to Newark]  Jean had UMW meeting in Hamilton then met her in Wilmington.  John and Julie went to dinner -- Park Bank Employees and Stockholders get together.  We took Kate to Wendy's, so surprised to see Clark Morrow [?] there and the gal -- Roberta Richards (?) that had been on an Elderhostel to Iceland three years ago.

April 24, 1989-99 Strawberries

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Monday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville continues through May 5]

Tuesday 1990 - D.M. Fife dies at 72 in Arizona.  Taking down storm windows, disked the garden.

Wednesday 1991 -  [Baltimore MD]  Breakfast here [Shirley Madison Inn] -- juice and muffins.  "Irene" quite talkative, a native of Poland.  Just a block to the MD History Museum, then to see "stacks" (five balconies) at the Peabody Institute, Walters Art Gallery, Goodwill Book Store, lunch at Woman's Industrial Exchange Lunchroom on North Charles, then walked on to the National Aquarium, $8.50 for Seniors, we were there 3 hours, saw the dolphin show -- five levels, rain forest, etc.  Enjoyed seeing the big turtle swim around.  Had supper at Louie's, combination book store and restaurant.  Visit to Enoch Pratt Library where a real loud voice announced, "We close at 9PM exactly."

Friday 1992 - We went to Wilmington and I got my new glasses, lunch at Ponderosa where we saw Lou Hale, she had been to Hawaii and was worn out from the long trip, no more overseas for her.  Kroger's had strawberries 99¢/quart.  Mother didn't want any food today but was ready for strawberries.  Jean Liggit called about their upcoming Far East trip.

Saturday 1993 - Went to Middletown for Court of Appeals meeting, made rounds in Wilmington, had supper at Chinese Restaurant then went to Farm and Home Show at fairgrounds.  Rails to Trails exhibit.  Denver House Restaurant and Bar to close and will become a Bed and Breakfast.  Went to Villars Chapel for spaghetti, really a 6PM deal for $3.50.   Almar [Alinor?] Barnes Sword and Leonard, New Vienna class of 1950, were there.  Then to Murphy Theatre, an old timer about [or with] Bogart.  Sat with Donald Bernards and Alan McKay.  Don commented that in Florida 7PM is a bad time for programs as people there need to go to the bathroom, go to bed or take their medications.

Sunday 1994 - [Cornwall England]  Drove to Lands End, etc., some of the roads are really one lane, but then on the motorways people would zoom by us when we were going 70.  On Sunday the hotel has a buffet, only thing hot was the soup.

Thursday 1997 - Went to the College, heard Tammie Schnitzer from Billings MT speak on "Not in Our Town".  Story of how she was harassed because she converted to Judaism because of her husband, a Doctor.  Talked about how to get rid of hate groups, community needs to stand united for tolerance and a hate free community.

Friday 1998 - Middletown Bar meeting again, took Jim Williams and Joe Dennis, 12 years today since his Dad (Max, my age) passed away.  13 there from Clinton County.  More looks at the Thompson house.  Still nothing definite with Shy [Sky?] Lady back from NY.  Always have to get answers from Terry [?].  Upcoming Mothers' Day Buffet at Manchester Hotel [presumably in Middletown where the Bar meeting was held?] is $16.95 and $14.95 for Seniors and $7.95 for 10 and under.

Saturday 1999 - Worked with Quicken.  Transplanted some rose bushes to our front flower bed which we had cleaned up.  Planted onions, beets, cabbage and broccoli seeds in the garden plus 3 hills of squash with six seeds in each hill.  Got Otterbein magazine "Come Grow With Us".  First time I had worked the garden, pleasantly surprised that the tiller started with old gas in it.

Sunday 1997 - [Grand Canyon to Phoenix] Had breakfast at El Tovar, French Toast with cream cheese filling, really filling.  Left Grand Canyon, nice stop at Yavapai Point [this link is to live webcam, so you can't see much in the dark, try during AZ daylight hours].  Can see the river in two different places.  Nice Public Library in Flagstaff, open on Sundays from 12-7.  Supper at Luby's.   Joe and Mary [MUH] staying with the Kings.

Tuesday 1999 - [Spain]

April 5, 1989-99 Muddy Trail

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Wednesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Thursday 1990 - Canceled out with Carrs [GHU's brother Harry's relatives?] on Sunday dinner, didn't think she [GHU?] could stand the trip down there.  GG has been staying until 7PM to work on income tax.  Cleaned along the parking lot at the Bank.  Small fire at the house next to GHU.

Friday 1991 - Went to Lincoln program at Murphy Theatre.  Gary Kersey is organizer - Lincoln's Last Day.  43 people in the cast.  We took the Johnsons (our minister), made a stop at McDonald's afterwards.  The play had a sell out crowd on two nights.

Sunday 1992 - [Roberta visiting]  Brought GHU home for lunch, we had some more Alaska salmon.

Sunday 1992 - [Second entry with same date] Jean brought Mrs. Moore to see Mother.  She did well.

Monday 1993 - [to Ohio from Phoenix]  Flew home on Delta non-stop at 1:25, full plane.  Because of the airport construction a bus met us and took us to baggage area.  Serena met us.  She had been in Newark the day before for a shower for Julie.

Tuesday 1994 - Sankers, Pam, and her son Ben were here for a BIG lunch and a tour of Wells.  Jean went to Mothers' Club at Ponderosa.  Got the Annual Report of the NB&Trust Co.  Stock market up 80 points after a 10% sell off.

Wednesday 1995 - [Hot Springs VA to Virginia Beach] A big breakfast, again with piano music, don't think they have more than 50 guests out of a potential of say 1M [1000].  Had a tour of the building in the AM and then we left about noon, made a stop at Charlottesville and on to the Founders Inn in Virginia Beach.  The Homestead has been there since 1776, cost about $250, rates go up at the end of this month.  At Founders Inn we had room 3314 (278 miles from Homestead).  Supper at Swan Terrace Restaurant, [part of the Inn] too much food.  Room was $84 per night.

Saturday 1997 - [Phoenix]  Fresh snow at the Grand Canyon.  I did hike down to first rest area - about 1.5 miles, really a muddy trail.  We are in Room 6117 at the Bright Angel Lodge, $54 for double.  El Tovar standard rate is $112 and Deluxe is $167.  [We took a group of foreign exchange students and were VERY nervous when several of them had not returned from hiking by dark -- they had decided to hike all the way to the river.  That was the year we had Petra from Switzerland living with us.]

Sunday 1998 - [St. Clairesville OH to New Vienna]  We left the Hampton Inn in St. Clairesville OH and went to the 10:15 service at [Central] Trinity UMC in Zanesville.  We met John, Julie and Kate at Clark's [?] at US 40 and Rt. 13.  Changed plans to eat at Herb N Ewe at 11755 National Road in Thornville, just been open a few months, really on "old" US-40.  [Website says they are no longer open, closed as of the end of May in an unknown year.]  Got to New Vienna about 4pm.  More anniversary cards.  The children gave us a gift certificate to a B&B in Hocking Hills.

Monday 1999 - [Spain] At Hotel Becquer in Seville, step down to hotel garage.  Only place where they had a notice about not taking food from the dining room.  Had nice lunch in a nearby restaurant [possibly El Cairo].

April 4, 1989-99 Oh My

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Tuesday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Wednesday 1990 - Mother seems confused - "Oh, My" - Wonders where she is.  Lions Club program of 2 Fairfield [north of Cincinnati] students on science projects.

Thursday 1991 - Quit using the "plunger" to fed Mother.  It takes an hour and a half to feed her.  Got letter from Frank about IBT trips -- he rubs Jean the wrong way.

Saturday 1992 - Nice breakfast at Murphin Ridge - Amish bread, big glass of fresh OJ, cantaloupe with kiwi and strawberries this with Vermont Molasses Cottage Cheese pancakes.  Drove to Columbus to meet Roberta at the airport, then to John and Julie's for lunch at 1030 Shaw Drive, their new home.  Julie is quite the chef -- asparagus with dried tomatoes and other things.  Came home via Hillsboro, GHU wide awake.

Sunday 1993 - [Arizona]

Monday 1994 - [to Ohio from Kentucky] Don was going to the Dr. -- he has a persistent cough and hard to keep food down.  We had lunch at the Heritage, only the bar area open at noon.  The gal brought us the wrong menu and then the wrong bill.  At UMC Board Meeting decided to go ahead with the SS room A.C. [or H.C.?]

Tuesday 1995 - [to Virginia]  We left at 9 and had lunch with Mary Ann Lewis at Bob Evans in Charleston [WV].  Jean had trouble recognizing her.  On to the Homestead [Resort in Hot Springs VA], a swim in their pool then dinner at 7:30, very formal with piano music.  Had movie at 9pm which didn't appeal to us.

Thursday 1996 - Jean has a cold.  Choir program for Maundy Thursday -- "Oh for the wonder of it all"

Friday 1997 - [Phoenix] Left for Grand Canyon, had lunch at Furr's in Flagstaff.

Sunday 1999 - [Easter, Granada Spain] [This entry could have taken place the day before or the day after, info about this trip is not necessarily date specific.]  Got up to Alcazar about 9AM and our admission time was 2:30.  No problem putting in time in other areas there.  Having Easter week parades with big crowds, reminded us of Ku Klux Klan parades.

April 3, 1989-99 Our Anniversary

Notes from Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Monday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Tuesday 1990 - Our 42nd Anniversary, went to Wilmington in the PM, took a load of cardboard.  Jean went to Mothers' Club supper.  Got Mother some diapers, good and bad days.  Joann Rankin stays at night, 11-7 and we pay her $4/hour and Kathy McIntosh runs in and out.  She lives two doors up.

Wednesday 1991 - A quiet [and/or great] anniversary, got one of those "gas" balloons, 99¢ plus 6¢ tax.

Friday 1992 - Jean had lunch in Wilmington with Ann Bailey while I went to the Bar Association Meeting at Denver House.  There are now 38 members.  We left for Murphin Ridge about 4:30, saw Mother and were there at 6, had Room #9 upstairs with a fireplace.  They have several early bird specials at $5.95 and $6.95.  They brought us a free dessert for our anniversary -- cake with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.  Oh yes, we went on a short walk before supper.

Saturday 1993 - [Phoenix]  Drove up to Carefree and had lunch at "our Place" [?], hard to find.  WNJ raising single issue price to 50¢

Sunday 1994 - [Easter, Kentucky] Our 46th Anniversary.  We didn't make the 6:30 Sunrise Service in Somerset.  We took Ginny and got there in plenty of time for SS.  Hard rain during church.  In the evening Frank and Diane had us over for supper - ribs, potato salad, baked beans and banana pudding.  Her Mother (Mary) and step-father were there en route from Flagler Beach FL to their home in Michigan.

Monday 1995 - Our 47th Anniversary.  Jean had Mothers' Club lunch at Ponderosa in Wilmington.  PPR meeting - Ed Johnson is to retire, he has been here 7 years.  He made an offer to contribute 10M [$10,000] to new church multi-purpose building.

Wednesday 1996 - #48.  Lions Club, Bobby Curtis [Custis?] son spoke on his "squeegee" collection.  Then choir practice in the evening.

Thursday 1997 - [Phoenix]

Saturday 1999 - [Granada Spain] At the Hotel Anacapri for 2 nights.  Gal at desk spoke great English, no wonder she was from Iowa.

Monday 1990 - Gerry started new job with Jerry's RV.  Robert Crist, where he had worked is quitting business [they closed the Phoenix business which was on the I-17 access road south of Dunlap, but stayed open in Mesa].  Trash $3.30.

Thursday 1992 - Article in Cincinnati magazine about John and Melissa Toedtman [Melissa is/was friend of Joe's] about their house on Mosteller Road in northern part of Sharonville.  Trash $6.50, used 617 cubic feet [water] = $3.67 (base rate), water $15.42, total $43.91.

Saturday 1994 - [to Kentucky] We drove to Williamsburg, had lunch at the Dinner Bell in Berea.  In the evening we ate at Cracker Barrel in Corbin.

Sunday 1995 - Don [?] Johnson's 42nd birthday, also Donna Smallridge.  Ed spoke  on Phillipines 3:4-14, "Been there, no thanks."  When we think we have reached the top, our mental attitude shifts to thoughts of retirement.  Jean still has the rash.  Had [historical] picture in our SS class of our church which showed two little chimneys on side next to street, also gas lights and things on each of the four corners of the steeple base.  We ate at the Wooden Spoon, $6.95.   At Revco 2 pair of shoestrings for 99¢, at Kroger's 3 pairs for 77¢.

Tuesday 1996 - Jean had eye appointment with Dr. H in Wilmington.  I went on to Dayton for Wilson appointment and Campbell appointment.  Then met Dick S. at Bob Evans for a cup of coffee [don't think Dad would have been drinking the coffee].  We had supper at Frisch's, then to UMC where Tom and Emily Salisbury spoke on their Wycliff [Bible translation] experience in Peru.

Wednesday 1997 - [Phoenix]

Friday 1999 - [Portugal to Spain]  At Hotel Beatriz in Toledo, at edge of town so could park on the grounds.  Took cab to tour square, very compact.

April 1, 1989-99 April Fool's

Dad's Diary 1989-1999 [lightly edited]

Saturday 1989 - [Cross-country bike ride San Diego to Jacksonville]

Sunday 1990 - John arrived about 1:30 AM, had met Julie in Indianapolis.  After midnight it seemed that GHU wanted to go to bathroom (potty) every half hour.  Complains of lower back pain.  Went down to her house at 4AM and got pain pill, it causes drowsiness and she then slept through to 9AM.  Turned clocks forward today.

Monday 1991 - Jean told me it was snowing out (April Fool's), then than Don and MV were up and cooking bacon, another April Fool.

Tuesday 1992 - Jeanne Sanker invited Jean down to meeting at Hyde Park UMC, I went to the Public Library to read about making hollow balls, then looked at some of the toy stores.  Came home through Hillsboro.  Mother in good spirits.  Cantata practice at 7:30 with 18 present.  Bought gas for 98.9¢, saw it later for 96.9¢, 104.9¢ in Hillsboro.  Had a good report from my physical.

Wednesday 1993 - [Phoenix]

Saturday 1995 - We went square dancing in Hillsboro, $6.  Caller was Mark Clausing from Cincinnati.  He is promoting a 12/31/99 dance in New Zealand then fly to Hawaii the next day for another 12/31/99 dance.  He has just returned from Australia on a square dance calling trip.  Turned the clocks forward tonight.  We picked up the loose sticks today.

Monday 1996 - It's really snowing this morning.  Harold S. came here with our new computer.  Jean's Mothers' Club met at Ponderosa in Wilmington.  Jean doesn't seem too peppy.

Tuesday 1997 - [Phoenix]

Wednesday 1998 - [to West Virginia] Left for Shepherdstown, WV, with lunch stop in Scenery Hill, PA.
David Henderson suggested Andy K. for black top replacement, David does the coating.

Thursday 1999 - [Salamanca, Portugal] I've had enough of visiting these old (and cold) cathedrals.  Lots of places have salads of white asparagus and artichokes.  Visited with Nancy Walker and family.  She has 3 children, David-17, Leslie-15 and Suzie-10.
